5-0 out of 5 stars Don't forget the Vol. 2!
Although completely different, Vol. 2 has some fantastic long-lost L.A. tex-punk bands ( I don't know how else to describe them). Both Vol.1 and 2 are awesome, especially on vinyl!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic!
I first bought this on an LP in about 1982, when I was 12 years old, at 'Zeds Records' in the middle of long beach, along with a 45 featuring 'Modern Warfare'. I have no idea what happened to my album, but still have the 'Modern Warfare' single. While playing this CD I realised the original album contained songs by 'Bad Religion', or am I mistaken? The music on this CD is absolutely great, and I was completely stoked to stumble upon this great, unique relic, as I had forgotten this album existed. I have many memories that come up listening to it, like getting arrested at an old 'Alpha Beta' grocery store off Redondo street in Long Beach, shoplifting liquor, to drink while watching 'Secret Hate' play a backyard party. Anyways, my opinion boils down to this:The bands on this cd are fantastic, unique, buy it, you will not be dissapointed! ... Read more

Editorial Review

A logical outgrowth of New York's straight-edge scene--which steered devotees clear of drink, drugs, and excessive behavior (other than loud guitars)--this intense foursome mixes hardcore sounds with a heavy dose of Krishna Consciousness. Yes, that's the same belief often disseminated by airport-based chanters, but Ray Cappo (formerly of Youth of Today) and company will never be confused with their orange-robed brethren--even though tracks like "Message to the Bhagvat" come directly from the same source. Fans of the charismatic Cappo's earlier music, and even some of Shelter's previous releases, might be put off by the pop leanings interposed here and there, but the anthemic quality (think U2 with considerably more brawn) of Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mercy, Buddha!
I got this CD cheap at the local CD shop in my town and i sorta expected this to be like WHEN 20 SUMMERS PASS". After the hysterical chanting intro, i get bombarded with the awful first track. In truth, the only songs i liked were "Civilized Man" and "Surrender to your TV". Personally, i think the lyrics are kinda lame and just sort of....there. No life changing songs or message, just a bad excuse for a hardcore record.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Gem For My CD Collection
Shelter is one of the most underrated hardcore punk bands of the 90's. What makes them different from other straight edge bands like Earth Crisis and Gorilla Biscuits is that they have Krishna beliefs. That's why there's a Hinduist god on the cover. I'm not into that Hindu religion stuff, as I am Christian, but the music is what matters. If there is a track that has got to be my favorite, it's not "Here We Go". It's not even "Message of the Bhagavaht". It's "Mantra", the title track. This brings me back to the good old days of 1995, when I was only about six years old. It's very emotional, and it's very catchy. This is a great release by a rarely known band. I own this album, along with "Beyond Planet Earth", you know, the two Roadrunner records releases. I plan to buy "When 20 Summers Pass" really soon, as it is released on Victory records, the best independent label out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Shelter at their best
I have 2 Shelter albums in addition to this one, and the others are way better. They are much more hardcore and less poppy. When I got this album I was expecting "Perfection Of Desire", but the songs on "Mantra" were much slower, happier, and lighter. If perhaps you thought Shelter's older stuff, or Youth of Today was too hard, then maybe this album is for you; otherwise stick with their older stuff. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Fun CD to listen to
I can't speak with authority as to the styles of music on this compilation because I don't listen to a lot of it. The only band on this CD I'm familiar with is Dropkick Murphys, but I bought it to try something different and for the most part enjoyed it. Not every song is a keeper, but most are good to listen to. I liked the Murphys song as well as the ones by Hepcat, The Business, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Swingin' Utters. There is a nice mix of punk and ska and I'm sure other styles I don't know the terminology for. It's a strong compilation and a good way to try out new bands and new musical styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Punks Learn How To Loves Ska On This CD!
As we all know that Hellcat records is owned and runned by Lars from Rancid. Well being a punk, I know that right now, all that is considered 'punk' is either A)This main-stream crap which sucks badly or B)All these emo and hardcore/metal bands appearing in the underground right now. So being a dude waiting for some new punk band to change everything in the punk genre...they havent made it. 4-0 out of 5 stars Punks should steer clear, but SKA FANS LISTEN UP!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Well it could've been ok......
I'm not much of an emo/punk listener, Alkaline Trio and Rancid are about as far as I go into those genres, I haven't heard many of their underground bands and my friend told me to hear Matchbook Romance and I d/led the song Save Yourself and loved it. So I got this cd you see. Ok I never do song by song reviews and I'm not going to now but since this is so short it's gonna be damn close to one, I'm not gonna comment on the actual song, I'll just say whether I like it or not.
5-0 out of 5 stars blahblahblahblah
umm. well i hated emo. because they all try so hard to be different that they ended up being the same. and even though that hasnt changed yet.... i picked up matchbook romance at target because the cd was NOT in a jewel case so i figured it had to be okay (woo noncomformers!) and it turned out to be really good. not the first time i listened to it, or the second. more like the eigth. but i really like the greatest fall song and the one that goes "Take my hand and never let me go." i used to be embarrased for screaming guys but this band made it okay. it actually made it really good.
1-0 out of 5 stars thumbs down

4-0 out of 5 stars once again, back in fine form
Nathan Gray and the boys are finally back doing what they do best. After "tomorrow come today" and their disasterous time with wind up records, i didnt think id ever be hearing from boysetsfire again.
3-0 out of 5 stars Still Waiting for the Punchline...
So what happened "After the Eulogy?", stagnation and confusion happened but with "The Misery Index.." the band appears to be on the road to recovery. As the liner notes explain, the state of the country and the world as a whole has only managed to get worse while the band itself seems to have fallen on hard times with the failure of their major label crossover attempt.Sounding more and more like the late great Freddie Mercury with every album(in tone at the very least), vocalist Nathan Grey compassionately expresses his frustration with this heart breaking lack of change, longs for something better, and struggles to find the will to move on in the face of this disparity.Needless to say, he does sometimes lay on the cheese a bit thicker than usual and it's understandable that fans of their more older more subtle material may be left cringing in places. Fortunately, Nathan's honest delivery and impressive range makes the occassional cheese much more tastier thant it would be with a less capable vocalist. That's not to say the whole album is a complete cheesefest, there's some interesting sarcastic saitre the band hasn't explored before as well as intelligent religious themes that don't just attack fundamentalism like so many have before but seem to question God's silence in these needing times.
5-0 out of 5 stars way better then any of the emo that has come out!
yes this album is no After the Eulogy or The day the Sun Went out but it is a damn good album and the dvd it comes with is one great dvd they play almost every song they have written in one live set. you cant go if you havent got this album yet get it you will not be disappointed ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars It's interesting
It's interesting how several of the past reviews say this band isn't like Underoath and several other labeled Hardcore bands. Few seem to know what pure Hardcore music sounds like. This is a totally Hardcore band. Completely fits into this genre. And concerning the review a few past "yelling" is more of the idea than "screaming." I enjoy screamo music. It is one of my favorite genres, but it is pretty disappointing that you have to be a screamo band to be hardcore anymore. That is not what hardcore is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hardcore, not Metal or Metalcore, there is a BIG difference!
Anyone who reviewed this and said it isn't hardcore doesn't have the slightest clue what hardcore is.Hardcore is not As I Lay Dying and it certainly is not Underoath like the reviewer "January" claims.Comeback Kid on the other hand is very much hardcore.Hardcore is Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Sick of It All, etc. and while Comeback Kid isn't that good yet, they certainly can be one day and this album is a good step in that direction. If you want to get into hardcore, check out this record and their first album "Turn It Around."

5-0 out of 5 stars They own so much!
This cd is just pure intensity. From the start to the finish it never slows up and Im glad it was short because hearing it live is a trip.Whoever tried to compare CBK to Underoath and As I Lay Dying, your an idiot.I love both of those bands but they are not in the same sub genre as CBK.They are old skool hardcore.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever made
First off i want to say that i've bought this cd probably 3or 4 times due to friends losing it or me ruining it.Thats how much I love this cd. The get up kids play some great stuff this time around. To me the guitars on this cd sound so awesome and original. The singer has a great voice too (kind of like the singer from coheed or kid brother collective. This is an emo album, but its great because while it has its slow parts, all the sudden the band will just start rocking out. The music is usually just standard power chords and octaves, but does have some catchy riffs. The drummer plays real standard stuff though but it gets the job done.Other than this i would definitley recommend their ep titled woodson, or even "something to write home about" I would not recommend their albums "on a wire" which is just horrible and nothing like their old stuff. I also wouldn't recommend their latest album "guilt show" either. If you're into emo or just great rock you will definitely love this.I got friends of mine who only listen to rap and techno into these guys. Also if you get this and like what you hear, check out kid brother collective. Its around the same line as the get up kids but not as great.

4-0 out of 5 stars God Bless Emo
There is not much i can really say about this that hasnt been said.... Yes this album is alluringly rough around the edges, yes this album very much grows on you, yes this is emo. And we all love emo right?
5-0 out of 5 stars And I'm predicting
The use of the word emo in any of these reviews, see I did it too.Let me start this by saying I like the Pixies, I like Sonic Youth, and I like Mike Patton.Guess what else, that's right this album.A limited taste in elitism ain't no fun. This album is rough, it takes awhile, but I'll be damned if I kind of like it better than Something to Write home about. So yeah, the trademark emo vocals, fine, but they have a lot more depth than you think.I mean sure I could sit around and listen to Led Zepplin albums for the rest of my life and never try something else and I haven't listened to these guys in awhile, but that doesn't diminish the quality of this album. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More 1978-1981 BLACK FLAG?Who could ask for more?More greatness.
Keith Morris, Chavo, Dez.What?Henry missing?Ah man, guess I'll have to live without him, not that he ruined BLACK FLAG, just, well, after Damaged LP everything they did was worthless so, who knows, maybe he did. What I do know it that if yer into BLACK FLAG you gotta own this album.Anytime you get to hear more from their finest period, heck, their only great period, you should go there. And, please, don't waste your time buying anything they ever released after Damaged.
1-0 out of 5 stars NO GOOD !!
Compilation of the pre- Rollins era ofthe band, featuring LOTS of sub par demos and rehearsal quality tracks by the 3 different singers.Do yourself a favour get THE FIRST 4 YEARS instead, which is a killer comp of official 7 inches releases, comprising the same 3 previous singers without redundancy and a sound so powerful it ll crack your ceiling, guaranteedI m a huge fan of the Flag but put this cd on E Bay after the firstlisten. This cd is a f...ing ripoff, not suitable for even the die hard fans !!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars ...and here's the same song with Dez singing instead...
Not the essential album by this band since these are the demos. And many of these tracks are featured here in 3 variations with three different singers. Some of these songs you don't find on THE EARLY YEARS or are different versions. The early flag stuff is gold and Chavo's versions here give the songs a more snotty adolescent fit. I like. A bit different from the out your gourd psycho streak heard from Rollins on DAMAGED (essential!) You'll need this to complete the collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a classic hard-core album
This is a really decent punk rock compilation.Pretty much every song is good, top to bottom. It is cool to see some Northwest bands and some hard-to-find old school outfits from 80s such as DFL (my favorite band) and Poison Idea. This is a good mixture of music and a must buy for punk rock aficionados. Not many better compilations out there!

4-0 out of 5 stars wholsome punk rock goodness
I bought this one about 10 min after i had bought Vol. 6 sence i was driving from one record store to another. This one is pretty good, but saddly its kind of a tease today, seeing as many of the tracks are from albums that went out of print years ago. This one is probably one of the best out of the 10 Punk-O-Rama compilations so far. The only two that i would rate better would be vol. 1, and the somewhat rare and un heard of Vol. 2.1, which was a special deal at the 97 warped tour(looks the same only the moster on the cover is skateboarding, not urinating on a wall, and it has the Wapred Tour logos) 2.1 featured a slightly modified track list with stronger tracks from SNFU, Down By Law and Pennywise. Its worth the money youll spend if you ever see a copy in the used cd bin. Anyway, Punk-O-Rama 2 is a pretty good collection of punk from the 90s as well as the two 80s hardcore bands Poison Idea and DFL. If you want to sample a pretty broad spectum that is punk music, this is a good place to start, as it gives you not only some of today's vetran bands' older material, but some seriously old scool stuff too. also some of these tracks arent for those turned off by questionable subject matter...Namely the one TSOL track

5-0 out of 5 stars ahhhhhhhh this reminds me of times past.....
It was 1996, I was young and pissed off, had problems with school, parents and girlfriends. This CD came right on time. The Offspring's Smash brought the Epitaph name to my attention, so I saw this for 10 Guilders (Yes, guilders...damn the euro)and picked it up. I was not dissapointed. It was angry, loud and fast. Descendents, NOFX, Pennywise, Bad Religion.. Loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars WHEN NATURE CALLS WE ALL SHALL DROWN
Could be better, but basicaly essential for the unbelievable track 'Gaia' which propels metal into some kind of hyper emotional, intensely atmospheric realm of shimmering, unadulterated beauty, with crystalline keyboards encasing wandering, soporific melodies which draw the listener into a vortex of heightened, synaesthetic bliss. Ahem.

Incredible atmospheric hard rock/metal.Do you dream of me? is basically pink floyd's 'goodbye cruel world' at twice the speed.I've given this CD to a hippy friend of mine who is into floyd and zeppelin and he admits that after he got used to the commercial-type-death-metal-vocals he was absolutely into this album.Wildhoney is the type of CD you should listen to with a 12 pack of beer next to you.Why Tiamat didnt continue in this direction is sadder than saying 'michael vick is a good quarterback'.I've heard newer releases from Tiamat, and this is their crowning glory. ... I LOVE THIS CD. ITS WORTH IT TO BUY IT.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Punk-O-Rama.....Enough Said
This was the first Punk-O-Rama CD I listened to, and boy I was not dissapointed. Most of the songs on this CD are the type of punk I would listen to, Quite fast and energetic. The best song on the CD has to be either NOFX - Bath of Least Resistance (NOFX being the greatest punk band of all time, of course), or Beatsteaks - Let me in. I heard the Beatsteaks for the first time on this CD and there absolutely bloody excellent. Obviously, The Cd is made complete with songs from the Descendents, Pulley, Pennywise, Dropkick Murphy's. The only let down on this CD is Noise Conspiracy, there song on this CD, well plainly sucks i'm sorry to say. But overall this CD is one hell of a good listen if your into punk. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just look around, does anything stand up against it?
From my point of view this is Sick Of It All at thier very best. Polished just right by RATM producer GGGarth, never had the band been so tight and explosive. Lyrics are my favorite of any hardcore cd out there, catchy, uplifiting but raw and aggressive. Perfection in hardcore, the machine only gets tighter from here on out. The best place to start when digging in the SOIA treasure trove. One Step Ahead, Good Lookin' Out, Burn 'Em Down, Closer... pretty much all the songs on here are great, just let it all sink in. Oh and BTW this has not left my CD stack for 5 or 6 years so... Built To Last, TRUTH.

5-0 out of 5 stars definitely built to last
some people may complain about an album being overproduced, but that is just lame.this cd is very well produced.yes their older rougher sounding stuff is underproduced and all of it is still phenomenal.but so is this even if it sounds cleaner.their newer stuff is just as clean as well on fat.it is just how they want to sound now. this cd stands the test of time and is one of their best offerings.

4-0 out of 5 stars One word , "BUSTED".
Ahhh Yes, Sick Of It Alls Final album on a major label. Not that itmatters but GGGarth was enlisted to produce this album which at the time Ithought was way out of left field for them but I can understand why a HUGElabel like Elektra would have them work with a big name producer. Anyway,Sick of it all pretty much continues where they left off on Scratch TheSurface except(this is the reason for the 4 star review) the productionis well..... a little too slick. The Beauty of Sick of It Alls previousalbums was the raw power of the songs combined with a Very raw but wellproduced recording. This dosen't make the songs on this album any lessimportant at all but GGGArths over-produced effort does have a bit of anegative impact on BUILT TO LAST. If you can overlook the production thereare some really good tracks on this album (Built To Last, Busted, Nice, OneStep Ahead, Don't Follow, Us Vs Them and Jungle - features some really goodtribal percussion). Craig sings on "BUSTED" which is the rawesttrack on the CD. Definitely not a CD to bypass. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars It's hardcore, it's emotional...
This is a very, very, very good album. I'm a huge Fugazi fan, and Guy is one of my favourite singers. He may not have a huge technical range or anything, but for raw emotion and passion he is hard to beat in my opinion. Those interested in the starting point of the much-maligned genre of 'emo' would do well to pick this up. More basic and with more rough edges than Fugazi, it is still well-constructed and quite accessible. The band was clearly home to one or two gifted songwriters; often a straightforward hardcore structure will erupt into a very catchy chorus, or experimental dynamics (such as on the 7 minute-plus 'End On End').
5-0 out of 5 stars A turning point album
I was your typical teenage US Hardcore fan when this album first came out. Being a HUGE fan (and collector) of anything Dischord put out, I was eager to get my copy. One listen left me more confused than excited. Is this hardcore? Is this the DC sound? I kept listening. Each successive listen revealed more and more brilliance. 20 years later I still listen to this album on a regular basis. It never fails to move me.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Ground-breaking album
The first time I heard RoS was when I saw them play with Grey Matter at a VERY small club on Connecticut Ave (I can't recall the name of the place). At the time, I was 17 and fully immersed in the DC and NY hardcore scenes. I was into fast, raw, and violent punk, and so for me, RoS had a completely different sound than anything I had ever heard. Despite their different style, I was so intrigued by their music that I bought this CD at their show. Little did I know that it was a ground-breaking album.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best punk compilation I have ever heard
I know most reviews say that this is not the best Punk O Rama volume. But I'll have to disagree. It's the best.3-0 out of 5 stars Weak effort Punk-O-Rama
This album was good and all but it just seems like they grabbed a handful of songs and threw them on a CD.The songs featured are not the best by the bands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Green Day Variation
    Key:
3-0 out of 5 stars It Begins...
Even if this album sucked, I would still have to give it some credit for including a sound byte from a Kevin Smith movie. However, End Is Forever doesn't completely suck. It's just somewhat unnverving. Since their debut, the Ataris had built a reputation as a great pop-punk band that could deal with emotions but not sound like they were about to start crying. That ends with this album. The tempos drop, the lyrics get sadder, and the overall tone turns from emotional fun to emo-drippy. On the bright side, The Ataris attempt some new stuff here, which is never a bad thing. "Song For A Mix Tape" includes a pedal steel guitar solo, and several tracks employ the use of an organ. Unfortunately, not all experiments work. When the band attempts to get punk on "Teenage Riot," it comes out sounding corny and insincere. I'm sorry, but after hearing Kris Roe sing about nothing but girls for years, I can't accept him as a riot-inducing cop hater. "Song #13" manages to inject a bit of hardcore into the Ataris sound, but it isn't enough to save this album from succumbing to the depths of the emo trend. The Ataris had always managed to avoid becoming emo, but it looks like all good things must come to an End Is Forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Ataris CD
alright just off the bat, i dunno how anyone can say blue skies is the ataris best cd because its not even better then so long astoria. This cd is like a greatest hits of their styles.Read more

It might be their last but its their best Think shakespeare on speed. Seriously this rocks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not their best
I'm a big DK fan and I was pretty let down by this album.Out of the 21 songs I only like a handful of them.(Although, Cesspools in Eden is one of my favorite DK songs). This album is more for the hardcore DK fans out there.I would suggest Give Me Convenience or Fresh Frut For Rotting Vegetables for someone who is looking to purchase their first DK album.

5-0 out of 5 stars For TRUE Dead Kennedys fans
Bed Time for Democracy is one of Dead kennedys best releases I mean in no way is this weak ,most who think so haven't read the lyrics or are too narrowminded for this. If you do not own this get it punk. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD
As Ignite will return with new CD this spring along with tour with Comeback Kid, I have to appreciate how invaluable this CD has been in my mp3 player for the past 5 years.Usually when I bought the hardcore cds I stopped listening them after a half year or so.Having said that, this Ignite's "A Place Called Home" has stayed my rotation list for years and I could not be bored listening it over and over.I must stress that this is not only great hardcore album but excellent ROCK album.Personally, the latter half of the CD is just amazing.Usually, Ignite is known for the fast-melodic band, but I love their mellow songs, such as "Be My Side", "Pieter", and "Bullets Included"-these songs illustrate how profesisonal their songwriting has been.I hope their new album would follow same direction as "A Place Called Home."

5-0 out of 5 stars Ignite
First of all, Ignite shouldn't be even compared to Nickelback! They aren't a bar band. And its a totally different Genre.I have listened to "A place called home" for several years and it has become one of my favorites. My band has played with Ignite and they are awesome live and worth respecting. Chugga

5-0 out of 5 stars actually, the lyrics ARE good, if not THE best in the genre
I just have to comment on this guy claiming the lyrics are worthless; they're just not.

this cd is great i love it and there great live plus i dont know how they sound like sum 41 and i like sum 41 but comeback kid is better and there great dudes

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Wake the Dead
I got this CD after purchasing Wake the Dead. This CD can't even be compared to their second album.Wake the Dead is good and a great piece of catchy hardcore, but this CD is just so much better. The breakdowns are brutal and so refreshing. It's good to know that there are still bands out there that play good hardcore like Comeback. These guys are great live, and I recommend that everyone should see them.Buy either albums, they are both good, but this one is booming.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing? yeah
yeah, i'm not here to write some long review saying how much everyone should love this album...i'm here to write a review stating how much I loved this album.
