Along with Versus, Silkworm, and Red Red Meat, Chavez were one of the best guitar-rock bands in a decade oversaturated with such acts, in both the over- and underground. Fans and newbies alike can rejoice with Read more

When you look at the back of the new Chavez retrospective Better Days Will Haunt You there is something that jumps out at you. It's the pumping fists of college kids rocking out, with no smug smile on their faces, just unadulterated joy.Do you remember that?Rocking for the sake of rocking?Well, Chavez friggin rocked it back in the day, and this is something I think we all could use a dose of.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best bands of all time.
I never really was into punk music too much. I thought it was too much screaming, and not enough instrumentation. THen, I discovered Flogging Molly, one of the greatest things to ever happen. I listened to Drunken Lullabies, and was immedietely hooked on this band. THis is an amazing CD that truly deserves recognition. This was the first Flogging Molly CD I listened to, and got me completely hooked on this Irish/Folksy punk band.
5-0 out of 5 stars buy it!!!
My review comes with certain disdain for punk music and in my cd collection the only "punk" I own is Dead Kennedy's. My girlfriend bought this cd one day And it ripped my skull open. My favorite type of music is folk and/or bluegrass and this cd, in my humble opinion, is a cross between them two generes mixed with a dash of tasteful punk rock fury. The lyrics are as excellent as the music so pseudo-folk fans like myself can find gold here with this cd.....its a surefire CLASSIC! I seen them live in columbus recently and they brought the city down!!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Wipe that golden tear from your mother dear...And raise what's left of the flag for me!"
My first experience with Flogging Molly was actually in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, which featured "Drunken Lullabies" on the playlist. I heard the banjo intro and actually started laughing, but by the end of the song I was shaking my fist to the chorus. That was about 2 years ago. I bought this CD finally on St. Patrick's Day this year, and I was singing the songs with friends while consuming copious amounts of Killian's Irish Red. I absolutely love this album. So full of emotion and balls at the same time, this album is truly a masterpiece. The songs that I particularly loved are Drunken Lullabies, What's Left Of The Flag, If I Ever Leave This World Alive, Rebels Of the Sacred Heart, Death Valley Queen, The Rare Ould Times, and The Son Never Shines(On Closed Doors). This was my first adventure into Flogging Molly, so when I buy "Within A Mile Of Home" and "Swagger", they may not hold that special place in my green, white, and orange heart that "Drunken Lullabies" did. ... Three albums into Tegan & Sara's career, it's still somehow necessary to get a couple of facts about them out of the way before diving into their latest offering. They are, yes, identical twin lesbians, and they do occupy the space--more like a vacuum, really--between the riot-grrl menace of Sleater-Kinney and the un-fun folk of Indigo Girls. That out of the way, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Underneath It All
I give this album five stars for the track underneath it all alone. I actually I had never heard of no doubt until a couple of years ago when I heard underneath it all playing on the the radio. Since then I've been all ears ever since.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just scrapes the surface but still excellent.
I got into No Doubt in 1995.
1-0 out of 5 stars Get Tragic Kingdom instead.
There are a couple of good songs on here. I love the song Sunday Morning. But then they went and put crappy songs like "Hey Baby" and "Hella Good" on it, and it just went to hell. Plus all of their most overrated songs, which I just am not a big fan of. No Doubt was awesome up until Return Of Saturn, and Gwen's solo career just sucks horribly. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Taking three-years between albums has made Weezer grow slower and more sober. But on its fifth disc the Los Angeles quartet is no more secure about its place in the world than it was a decade ago in longing tunes like "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here." Singer Rivers Cuomo, still struggling with adolescence at 34, is all apologies. "All I have to do is swing and I'm the hero/ But I'm a zero," he sings on "Perfect Situation," and "I am terrified of all things/ Frightened of the dark," on the lighters-aloft power ballad "Hold Me." The band, meanwhile, keeps things from getting too heavy by punctuating the songs with a familiar rush of bouncy new-wave melodies and fizzing power-pop riffs resulting in the hair-flinging metal of the future D.A.R.E. theme song and album high-point, "We Are All On Drugs." 5-0 out of 5 stars THIS WAS AMAZING!
Ok, there are some people I can tell from previous reviews who just don't click with this album. Let me tell you, this is the album that got me hooked on Weezer. I toatally LOVE this album. It might be that I haven't been a Weezer fan all my life and this was my "test CD", but this album doesn't seem to get old. In fact, to me, it became more catchy the more I listen to this. I can now say I have memorized all of the songs and love singing to them all the time. I bought the other Weezer CDs after this one and I can't say I enjoy them more. If you are expecting the old Weezer, you won't get it........ they have definatly gotten better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Instrumental rock, anyone?
I'll give this 3 1/2 stars.
3-0 out of 5 stars umm... what is this?
There are maybe 2 and a half good songs on this album.I mean, it's not horrible, and it's listenable, but their earlier studio albums were much better. I think Weezer kinda died a little with this CD. This is not rock anymore... it's pop-rock. There are a couple songs with interesting lyrics and rythem, but most of it is just the same over and over again, with no realy meaning. It's an okay buy if you love weezer, but still...

While comparisons to nerd-rock dandies Weezer are probably inevitable for the fabulously named All-American Rejects, discerning listeners will note that where the cheeky lyrics about painfully awkward love end, the group's rhythmic force picks up, positioning the Oklahoma crew more as a geeky Green Day than the above-named preppy pop dabblers. No shame in that--on their major label debut, the All-American Rejects marry punk and pop with a clear sense of purpose and no particular loyalty to either form, cherry-picking the best of each and arriving at a spiky, effervescent middle ground. Singer Tyson Ritter is especially convincing in his role as hapless lover. But on tracks like the muscular "Too Far Gone" and the vaguely orchestral "The Last Song," Ritter's comrades drive the whole shebang home with instrumental freight. And you'd have to be pretty hard-hearted not to find yourself echoing the sing-singy strains of "Swing Swing" and "My Paper Heart." Fans of ironic pop--Box Car Racer, Fountains of Wayne, and their ilk--get crackin'. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars quite pleased.
its better then their last release. on that i couldnt tell where the songs begin or end. and the vocals were repetitive nad monotonous. this cd has melody, cool structures. it might sound alot like what other bands are producing...but sometimes that the sound you want to hear...and its still NJ.

5-0 out of 5 stars TO "JESTER GOD":
Redeemer is a solid album by Norma Jean that incorporates strong riffs, powerful vocals, and deep lyrics. New vocalist Corey Brandon fits into the gap that the talented Josh Scogin left when he started THe Chariot, which is a new grindcore metal band from Atlanta. All-in-all, "Redeemer" is a good album that shows Corey Brandon's powerful vocals. If you are a fan of wild Metal/Metalcore, you should consider purchasing this album.
1-0 out of 5 stars The cover is quite ironic
If there is anything I can give this band, is that they are not to afraid to show how bad they are. Thats right folks, Norma Jean openly admit how terrible they are by warning about this *hit ahead of time with the cover artwork, depicting several children being pecked by a raven. Coincedently, when a local emo kid played this, it felt like said raven was picking at my head when I was driving by, but when I looked over my shoulder, amazingly, there wasnt any bird! So then I realized, "Hey, its the music thats doing this!" So I soundly ran over said emo kid, smashed his CD into tiny fragments, and finished it off with a nice minature napalm blast to take care of the left overs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I bought this cd during the summer and haven't stopped listening to it since. Before this band i was stuck in this rut of mainstream pop, rap, and hip hop that i really couldnt get into. But this album made me look at music through a new perspective. (yah i know thats cheesy but thats the way it is...) The lyrics are so relatable and melodies catchy. William Beckett's voice is absolutly amazing thats one of the reasons this album is so great. It just grabs you emotionally and you need to hear more. When i play this cd i play the ENTIRE thing all the way through which is crazy for me cuz i haven't been able to do that with any cd for many years. There is a negative to this album and that is that its too short. Seriously.
5-0 out of 5 stars Overall amazing
I picked up this album at my local library after listening to 'Checkmarks' on my friend's ipod. I liked the song, but I wasn't sure how good the rest of it would be so I didn't want to spend money on something that might turn out to be bad. But as soon as I listened to it, I rushed out to Best Buy to get a copy. Believe me it was that good.

If one needed further proof of the contemporary revival/reassessment of the ambitiously overwrought sensibilities once so reviled in '70s rock, this aggressively mindbending second album by the Mars Volta offers it up in spades. 5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRING.
I had long since given up hope of ever hearing another modern Progressive Rock band to match those great bands of the 70's, when a friend let me hear this album, "Frances The Mute" on vinyl through a top end hi-fi rig. The instant the stylus touched the record, I new I was about to hear something new and full of surprises. I loved the music on first hearing and it takes a VERY special recording indeed for this to happen!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Not Sadistic!
Hello all. This review is to help you decide whether or not you want this album, right? Well. i have to tell you, you're stupid if you don't buy it. but apparently. you need more than just an insult to convince you. so....On with the show. I'll rate the songs by tracks. But First, what you have to realize about the Dresden Dolls, is that their is only 2 members. Amanda is piano/keyboard/toy piano/Vox, and Brian is percussion/drums/guitar/vox. Their sound is VERY UNIQUE, there is no other sound like them. It's a mix of Punk/Cabaret/Rock. Now, you may think that if it's only got a keyboard and drums, then it can't be rock. it can't be viscious, it can't be head-bangingly beautiful. You're wrong.
5-0 out of 5 stars And no one cares if your back is bleeding
My introduction to The Dresden Dolls came in the form of Yes, Virginia... That CD blew me away and I expected nothing less from this, their self titled release. This CD doesn't pack as hard of a punch as Virginia does but it's there, and it's as swift as can be. The lyrics aren't as controversial and comical as they are on Virginia, yet there's still room for controversy with Missed Me and Coin-Operated Boy. The one thing that is completely the same as Virginia is the fact that Amanda and Brian sound amazing playing off of each other, and Amanda's vocal adventures from song to song are fascinating to listen to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this CD...One of the best I've heard. From a fan.
Love this CD. I purchased it not knowing what it was about and I'm glad I did. My favorite songs are:

4-0 out of 5 stars good...not the same...but that happens
i bought the translating the name ep back in the summer of 2004 when it first came out...a friend that owns a small record label in ma had heard it and told me it was AMAZING...i went to newbury comics, bought it and was instantly hooked...I loved how Saosin blended many different styles of metal with VERY high pitched vocals...the drumming was out of this world but that's what you get when it's a former member or drum tech? of the band slayer, anyways anthony green has one of the most unique voices in music today...seriously stop and think about how much recycled s*#t is being produced and played on radio, etc. and you'll appreciate how awesome it really is...i too, like some of the other poster's on this think the album is way over produced and isn't nearly what it could have been...something else that bothered me too is that Saosin is not a good live band vocally (they played mainly TTN songs and only added bury your head, follow and feel and come close)...musically they are awesome live but vocally they were just terrible...but that's what you get for this genre of music when you go see bands like this live...while they may sound amazing on an album, it is insane to think that the singers will hit those notes night after night on a 2-3 month tour, it just doesn't happen unless you get in-ear monitors so that the board engineer can turn up your vocals and you don't strain your voice (ant green does it with circa and his vocals SOAR Live)
4-0 out of 5 stars best buy.$6.GO!!!
Well, it's true - the record is overproduced.Howard Benson was the wrong choice, especially when Beau could have self-produced it.The songs are not quite as complex, the guitars are not as assaulting (vocals are the prominent instrument in the mix), and the overall sound is not as dynamic or energetic as previous efforts.
5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible full length release, a triumph!
First off, I must agree with some of these other reviewers who are making excellent points;Yes the album is definitely over produced but that is what you get when you've got Howard Benson and Chris Lord-Alge helming the board. They tend to do that.Plus, if you watch the making of DVD, it didn't seem like getting Benson to produce it was their first choice anyway. Also, Cove does an excellent job of carrying on Anthony Green's legacy, but like someone else said, doesn't have quite the angry side he did, but the music stays passionate.I still hold true that Saosin AND Circa Survive (or maybe Cove and Anthony) are some of the most passionate, poetic, and solid song writiers in a long time and this record is damn dripping with excellence. The entire composition of every song is layered, harmonic in so many ways, and chaotic in the good way.I'm not going to break down every little detail, but I'm telling anyone out there considering this CD that it grabs a hold of you from the beginging, no need to let it "grow on you".There just isn't much you can say about these guys that hasn't already been said!An incredible release and I already know I'm going to wear this CD out in no time. The only complaint that I have is that they put "Bury Your Head" on here, which is an incredible song, but I think everyone has heard it by now.Should have had something else new on there. All in all, I can't stop listening to this CD.Beautiful but that is what I expected! ... I never have thought that one day I will find a group that gathers a Power Pop sound (Like the 90s bands like Fountains of Wayne, Sloan, Weezer, Tories, Drowners, Semisonic, Teenager Fanclub or 70s bands like Badfinger, Marmalade, Stealers Wheel, Big Star) with the energy and life of a boy band (showing high energy sound like the first Beatles releases).

Editorial Review

The third low-tech, high-impact recording from the Akron, Ohio, duo is once again a loud and lively confirmation that passion, not precision, is what the blues is all about. With Dan Auerbach's insistent, abrasive guitar tone and drummer Patrick Carney's violent percussion workouts, the Black Keys' sound thrashes about with industrial-strength garage-band energy, but it also connects directly to the core sensibilities of the original blues creators with its primal expressions of pain and pride. With Auerbach shouting out the vocals the duo rocks hard in its stripped-down, ragged glory mode on Hendrix-influenced shredders like "10 A.M. Automatic" and "The Desperate Man," the fuzzed-out "Till I Get My Way," and the surprisingly swinging "Just Couldn't Tie Me Down." But it also delivers the same emotional intensity in a less frantic form on the moody mini-masterpiece "The Lengths." And, for all the justifiable fascination with the out-of-control excitement of the duo's punkish instrumental approach, the group continues to excel at songcraft, a talent expressed both in its own material and in its ability to recognize and expand the disguised merits of lesser-known cover songs. It follows a previous Beatles rarity recording with a nod to the Kinks this time via a personalized cover of "Act Nice and Gentle," probably the last thing the Black Keys would ever be accused of being. 4-0 out of 5 stars Rock Out
This is the only Black Keys CD I have listened to, though it will not be the last.It was great on my latest road trip.It rocks with a fresh, raw sound from start to finish.70's blues rock meets White Stripes ~ Rolling Stones from the 70's.There are so many "alternative" sounding bands, it is nice to hear some unbridled bluesy emotion in music.Create some space in your living room and get out your air guitar for this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars good stuff
while the music isn't exactly groundbreaking, it makes you want to nod your head and has a real bluesy feel that is refreshing today. Wait, i better take that back because some people think that because this band has been called a blues band when they're not that it means they are terrible. Review the music instead of criticising them just because you don't thinkit's blues music. I love the fuzzed out punky guitar on this album and "the lengths" is a nice change up. Overall i think it's a good album, except i found that the sound got a bit grating after a while.

2-0 out of 5 stars Their First Two Albums Laid Down a Groove, This Album Lays an Egg.
As long as people don't associate the term blues with The Black Keys, I'm okay with people hyping up their album even though it's really just commercial fodder and easy brainless listening. The songs are a lot more canned and formulated this time around giving less of a groove through out the album and I can't shake the feeling that I've heard all these melodies and riffs before. Originality is severely lacking. Eric Clapton caught a ton of flak for heavily borrowing from other guitarists but redeemed himself, much thanks to Duane Allman, with the Layla album. Not even in Dan Auerbach's dreams could he steal as well as Clapton did but yet he still blatantly tries. Junior Kimbrough and RL Burnside are rolling in their graves right about now. You don't cover these blues legends and treat their life's work, soul and pain like an ATM machine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointing
As a long time fan of Placebo, I must admit, I was expecting something more. Something different than...well, different than this. I don't know what I waz expecting, but after hearing the double CD Sleeping with Ghosts and the incredibly intricate remixes of the second CD of remixes, MEDS feels like, just the same old thing. Been there, done that.I was hoping for so much more.I can't say this was a horrible album, it wasn't. It just wasn't new enough and exciting enough for me to give a better rating. Very lackluster contribution to an otherwise phenomenal discography of a great band, who wasn't unable to live up to its greatness this time. Hopefully next time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Have you taken your "Meds"?
"Meds" has to be one of the most pleasant surprises of the year for me. Not because it is another strong record in Placebo's all ready consistant canon of work, but because after a greatest hits compilation and a "vacation" from each other a few years back I figured the band was going to go the way of the buffalo, call it a day and persue the ever wonderful solo projects/ new band that, hey, you know, always works, right?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Drug
Brian Molko and his "two husbands" Steve Hewett and Stefan Olsdal have gone back to their roots for their newest release Meds and the results are spectacular. I've been a rabid fan of Placebo from the moment they released their first album.

Editorial Review

Rise Against returns with a rollicking wallop of an album that further establishes the Chicago-based outfit as one of the great bright hopes for the future of alienation rock. Cut from the same savvy cloth as Bad Religion and Black Flag, Rise Against rocks hard during the martial opus opener, "Chamber The Cartridge," the melodic "Injection," which asks us to imagine that Iron Maiden came from sunny California and not some dreary part of London, and "Ready To Fall," which may be one of
