Rock & roll is constantly splintering into multiple personalities. Big radioplayers layer thick slabs of studio shine on their albums, while back-to-the-basicsrockers keep the sound so raw it rubs calluses on your ears. The White Stripes fallin the latter category. The duo strips down to the fundamentals of Meg White's simpledrumbeat and Jack White's garagy guitar and pleading vocals. While the elements aresparse, the Detroit act create a noisy, hip-grinding batch of punk R&B, displayed againon Read more

this is cool, i like most of their stuff usually, i dug that they played with jeff beck--takes guts!, tho meg seemed to be having a wee bit o trouble but who wouldn't with that guy!
5-0 out of 5 stars White Hot . . .
. . . enough to inspire insane amounts of jealously, that's fer sure. So this little review is a big middle finger to all the jealous music snobs that feel the need to spit venom at the Stripes. Hello? Anybody home? Open your ears! The White Stripes rock!!! WHITE BLOOD CELLS is loaded with first-rate blues-metal stompers. There's also some sweet and tuneful mellow stuff here too as well as other surprises. This is probably their best album, a deserving breakthrough for the band. Certainly stronger overall than the subsequent ELEPHANT and GET BEHIND ME SATAN albums in my view.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best White Stripes Album
This is the best album of theirs. Its full of lessons and tales of life and experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all the sides of one of rock's greatest bands...
For a greatest hits collection, I've rarely come across one thats as good as this. If your looking to get into them, start here, it gives you all things pumpkins. I never owned any of their stuff, so if your like me and want too get a taste of them, this is the best place to start IMO. This album basically goes through all the stages that the pumpkins went through in their career. Some fans prefer different era's of the band, but this collection has all of them on here. It goes from there early stuff to when they started experimenting with electronica on the last few albums. I personally like it all, and I can start the album and let it play all the way through. I really like the flow and pace of it. If your a big pumpkins fan, this album isn't for you since you have all the albums anyways, I wouldn't say that this adds anything you don't have (unless you buy the Limited edition that has a 2ndb-side disc..). This album is for those who don't own a pumpkins album, like I was prior to purchasing this.If you were like me, buy this album, it really does give you all aspects of the pumpkins. I can honestly say that since I've listened to this album many times, I have alot more respect for the Smashing Pumpkins, they truly are one of rocks greatest bands.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!!
I can tell you some of my favorite's are missing: Muzzle, I am One,Crestfallen, Try,Try,Try , Rocket. I know it dosn't sound like a lot but if they had put in all the greatest songs it would have gone like this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good...I'm getting more albums!
The Smashing Pumpkins are amazing.Really, they are.Back in the early nineties, when I was about 4 or 5 years old, my older brother used to listen to The Smashing Pumpkins. Now, about a dozen years later, I listened to the sample of "1979" and was blown away by a wave of wondrous nostalgia.

2-0 out of 5 stars well, it's progression.......but backwards
lets revisit the history of the band plain white t's. their debut album "stop" was a very anthem filled songs about life and relationships that would appeal to mostly to people in highschool or perhaps young college students. this being said because the album talks alot about doing something with your life at pivotal moments and of course relationships.
5-0 out of 5 stars improvement
are you people serious? their last album "all that we needed" was terrible! i was so disappointed because of my pure enjoyment of their old stuff, i just didn't think it was up to par and i think that the band felt the same way because they didn't wait long before releasing "every second counts" which is awesome! it's exactly what i was hoping for from this band, and if they keep it up, they'll make it big!

1-0 out of 5 stars Uninspired.
Half the effort of their previous work. The lyrics for every song are about relationships. Gets real tedious if you listen to the album straight through.

Editorial Review

Forever the buzz on Flogging Molly: the records are terrific, but wait until you see them live. And you can do both with the Los Angeles band's fifth record, a dual-disc CD (10 songs) and DVD (106 minutes) that pulsate with a remarkable mix of Irish pub traditional and enthusiastic punk rock. The audio CD is crammed with fan favorites--"Drunken Lullabies," "Black Friday Rules," "What's Left of the Flag"--that have been recreated either live on stage or acoustically in studio. The latter treatment strips down the wall-of-sound live band until the mandolin, accordion, and tin whistle echo like a Saturday night in Kilkenny, turning rampant rocker "Wanderlust" into a gentle waltz and "Another Bag of Bricks" into a pub-rock sing-a-long. The album's lone newcomer is a full-band studio take of "Laura," a farewell-thee love song featured on the DVD, which includes Bridge Regan's frenzied fiddle playing and vocalist Dave King's croaky Irish twang. Recorded in seven different countries, the DVD nails the genuine spirit of Flogging Molly's live performances and tracks the stories of each band member, especially King, who recalls bolting hometown Dublin for America. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Masterpiece....
Wow, just when I thought Flogging Molly couldn't get any better, they topped themselves again! This is a fantastic set with one of the best music documentaries I have ever seen! The acoustic and live versions of all the classics are incredible! My entire family loves "The Molly" as we call them, and this CD and DVD does not disappoint! We all enjoyed it together!Dave King is a musical genius, and he managed to bring some of the best musicians in the world together.Their fun and haunting melodies will be around a long time!Keep rockin' Flogging Molly!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
I had looked forward to this and counted down the days to release. Much old material rehashed, inferior to the original recordings.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's nothing new but still very worth it
In "Whiskey On A Sunday," you get what the product description above so helpfully states. As far as what I think of the contents, I'll let those five stars above speak for me, although I'd make it 10 if I could. Flogging Molly is the best live band I know of and it seems that they're too talented to make anything not worth listening to over and over again, or, in the case of what the CD here has, acoustic or live when you already have the album version. The only reason not to get this is if you don't care about the musicians who make what you listen to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Music for your mind, or at least your hips.
Gogol Bordello's latest album has two layers. The first layer is aparent after a fitst listening, the second takes a while. One of the first things that drew me to this band, and probably what gets most people hooked on them, was the fusion of sounds they produce.I'm a big fan of bands like Flogging Molly, bands who manage to fuse their ethnic heritage along with good ole' punk rock. The eastern gypsy music (as well as reggae, flamenco, and whatever else they decide to throw in) adds a fun twist on what would normally be considered simple, three-chord-or-less rock. The music is just so fun that everytime I hear it, I want to jump around the room like I'm at some crazy wedding (note: "Dogs Were Barking" is exactly this)! However, after I calmed down, I started listening to what Eugene Hütz was singing (some call it screaming, but screw them). What wasn't in Hungarian (or Ukranian, I'm not very good with Eastern European languages) was very smart, politically-charged comments on culture and where one belongs.Songs like "Immigrant Punk" and "Underdog World Strike" are near-brilliant critiques about how Americans handle culture.Although there are some songs that are just for fun ("Start Wearing Purple" and the mostly-instrumental "Not A Crime" and "Mishto!"), this album is packed with brilliant social commentary backed, or perhaps masked, by wonderful hip-shaking musical variety.I true pleasure to listen to!

5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy Gypsy Frenzy
I bought this album based on their appearance of visual frenzy when they played a late show a while ago.I couldn't hear the sound because I was at a bar--but their music will kick you in the nuts and make you like it.
5-0 out of 5 stars This album is a golden one!
Wow!This album is my favorite. It has many songs for many moods and is a good introduction to Gogol Bordello. They are an extremely talented band.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fair Rating
I haven't offer reviews before, relying on other opinions to broaden my music horizons.I just couldn't let this one go by.This would get a half star if there was such a rating. No value whatsoever.Stick to Porcupine Tree, Afrocelt Sound System, Gentle Giant to name a few exploratory groups with talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
And I don't even like prog-rock that much. There is such a devine space created by these guys though that I'm compelled to listen... over, and over, and over... you get the idea. I've also listened to Amputechture and Frances the Mute and for myself personally De-Loused is the go to album of these guys - the others seem a tad to overbearing and overindulgent (even prog-rock is supposed to represent these two ideologies). Somehow the inspiration of their friend's coma experience and subsequent death helps elevate this piece of material above the other two in my opinion. On a purely technical level, these guys have chops, the engineering makes perfect use of the stereo range, and the mastering job is one of the best and most natural that I've heard in a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars They could be the next Pink Floyd!
I bought FTM and loved it, and I knew then that I was in need of this fantastic album! A great suprise. The album tells a stroy.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4/5; Senses Fail is not failing here!
I lifted this album from the rack at the local record store, after the clerk recommened it.The man was spot-on and had a great record of finding music, so I took his word and bought this album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Senses Fail puts out another great album
Now, i have listened to this cd non-stop since i got it. There is not a single track on this cd that is not a solid hit for the fans of SF. I hear all these people talking bad about them and i say why? I have bought each of the cds and listened to them way too much and this one is easily becoming one of my favorites. Still Searching was an advancement from Let It Enfold You. There is a lot more guitar notes that are harder and faster. They are still the same SF that came with From The Depths of Dreams. If you're a SF fan than you should love this album. If you're not a fan, go buy thier first cd and get into them, this band is amazing and will go far in the music industry. I look forward to keep listening to this cd non-stop and i hope you will to.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is simply perfect.
Without a doubt Still Searching is pure genius.

Editorial Review

There's a classic episode of The Little Rascals where one of the gang can't join everybody else on the ballfield because he has to stay home with his younger brother, who has the croup. "I can't come out and play," he whines. "I've got to stay home and grease Wheezer!" Nobody at Geffen Records knows whether this was the inspiration in naming Weezer, but it makes sense. Like many of their peers, the members of the Los Angeles quartet seem to have spent their formative years in front of the TV; when they were a little older, they were just as entranced by college rock. Finally, ala the Rascals, one of the gang said, "Hey, kids, let's put on a show!," and the result is Weezer's uplifting, unpretentious, and extremely endearing debut. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Joey woulda liked this
I'm positive that Joey Ramone liked this disc.In a decade where "nothing really knocked me out anymore", this disc did it.And it's still spinning. In a lackluster, harmonically bland decade, with Rubbish flannel clad grunge bands like Pearl Jam, this was a standout. An anger veiled in sugar. Rivers and the geek boys are king.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best albums are simply colors
Once in a while an album will be produced and it will have no name, simply because the amount of talent and energy put into it could not be defined or summed up in any set of words. And these albums will go down in history as being the best of their time. The White album in 1968, Metallica's Black album of 91, and Weezer's Blue album of 94. That's right, I hold the Blue album up next to the White album. And why not, Rivers is not only the appealing front man but also the humble song writer and lead guitarist. The album creates an immediate first impression on your ears with a catchy verse chorus verse, but with better guitar riffs and licks then you would hear any normal punk rock musican pull off. The album progresses through and all of the feelings that 90's alternative (yes alternative) rock gives a fan come shooting into your veins. The teenage angst pulls you back into your garage by your sweater and you find yourself staring at old posters on the wall and when you ask your friend...whats the name of this album...you are surprised of his response when you only hear...."the blue album"....

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands down, one of the best albums you'll ever listen to.
Definitely one of the best albums there is. Every song is great, Say it aint so is a favorite, as well as The world has turned. I recommend this album to anyone aspiring to buy a weezer album, the BLUE album should be a first pick. ... Read more

For their latest, Akron, Ohio duo The Black Keys have brought forth an EP of six songs by Junior Kimbrough. This is no mere dalliance; the late elder Mississippi blues musician was a powerful influence on guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Their three previous albums, full of dusty grooves and simple but impassioned dynamics, would have found strong rapport with Kimbrough, who unfortunately died before they could ever meet. However, his widow, Mildred gives her passionate endorsement for these performances in the form of a short phone message that appears at the end of the disc. Among the highpoints is "Meet Me in the City," which positively shimmers as the plaintive vocal soars over a virato-ed guitar. The Black Keys, besides paying their heartfelt respects, also demonstrate the breadth and durability of Kimbrough's music. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good band...decent recording.
OK, well I don't normally write Amazon reviews but this one needs it. OK, first off I am a Black Keys fan, although I only own their debut The Big Come Up. I really enjoy that album. This one seemed to me to be a similar endeavor to their aforementioned album. Needless to say I thought it would be a nice little addition to my music collection...
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Another Fantastic BK Album
Everything these guys have put out is gold.If your favorite White Stripes song is Ball and Biscuit you'll love the Black Keys.I recommend starting with the Big Come Up and working your way through the albums to this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding piece of work
This is a brilliant release. I have been itching for a new Black Keys release since getting a hold of The Rubber Factory and this EP is every bit as satisfying(if not more so) than a fullLP of new original Keys material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
Blondie is one of the greatest and most important bands in the history of pop/rock to have ever existed. While Grace Slick might have predated one-time Playboy bunny/vocalist Deborah Harry, Ms. Harry still set all of the standards as far as any future women in rock. She showed that it was possible for an extremely attractive female to front an all male backing band and do it with style, sex appeal and genuine raw talent while not coming across as a tramp.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best Blondie compilation out there
With a few options available for you to get your hands on Blondie's greatest hits, and pretty much little new to say about the guys that blended punk and new wave to perfection in their time, the one thing that can be claimed about this compilation is that it's the best one available. It covers pretty much everything you'd want to have by the band and the quality of the recordings is also the best one around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Iconic Memory Of Blondie Still Extent!
The works of Blondie are paragons of the new-wave punk genre on their own without any help of compilation or amassing, but the main priority needed to be mentioned is how one can adequately mix these supreme works of sound and emotion into such a phenomenal and superior mix, as an impressive result; "Blondie's Greatest Hits". From the disco upbeat of "Heart Of Glass" to the romanticly provocative single "Denis", from the tropical flare of "The Tide Is High" to the industrial beats and vocals of "The Hardest Part", this album mix, in the entirety of my life of being a Blondie aficionado and music collector, is one that surpasses any limit of Blondie's quality and proficiency, portraying to the world of their appeal, greatness and utter legacy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Rock Solid Album
This album rocks from start to finish. I agree that the songs aren't all as catchy as the "Start Static" album, but at least they didn't go screamo, or turn out a batch of lousy "mature" songs like NFG and Yellowcard. This album is the real deal (although I am surprised that the lead singer's voice has started to sound SO MUCH like A.J. from LIT) even if the material is not all that original. Overall, much better than "Palm Trees and Powerlines" and nearly as good as "Start Static."Since all of the reviewers seem to enjoy their first album the most, perhaps Sugarcult can combine this "new" sound with the sound on that album, for their next album. Definately worth the 12 bucks - check out "Riot" because it is the best Sugarcult song ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their best effort to date
If you're looking for the Sugarcult CD that rocks you from start to finish, this is the one. From Lights Out to Hiatus, standby to beaten up by the best punk-pop I heard in years. Driving guitar riffs, pounding drums, pumping bass and vocal harmonies that get stuck in your head for days. This CD will have you anxiously waiting for there next effort. My favorites are:
5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps getting better and better
Have loved the previously released music from this band, and this new CD seems like an amazing culmination of musical and personal development. Songs like "Los Angeles," and "Out of Phase" stand out to me as shining examples of Sugarcult's development as a band. The lyrics are amazing with depth and sophistication, but the music is still rockin'. Some nice 80's-like elements give the music a fun, bright sound, but the core of the music is still guitar-burning rock n roll. Lots of musical styles, but each seems to merely reflect different sides of the recurring themes in the lyrics. Sorry this sounds so nerdy, but I'll finish by saying that this is a great rock album with plenty of musical and lyrical elements to attract a wide audience from teen emo heads to older folks who miss good ole rock n roll. ... Starting life as the most competent Misfits tribute band to not actually play Misfits songs, San Francisco Bay Area punks A.F.I. have not only discovered how to write their own snarling melodies, but have developed the confidence to play them without a cloak. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is AWESOME
This is a great cd to buy if you never listened to AFi. it will make you buy the other ones. if you have listened to AFI before, you definatly buy this. it is one of those CDS that you could listen to over and over agian and never get tired of it

5-0 out of 5 stars This is amazing, but don't try to categorize it
Is it punk? Is it goth? Alternative? Metal? Play this CD for 10 different people and I bet few of them will agree on how to categorize it. And that's one of the things that makes it great. If you were an AFI fan from their early days of three-chord songs on Answer That and Stay Fashionable, then this likely wouldn't appeal to you. This is not punk in the sense that their earlier CDs were (and yes, I have heard them). But the punk influence is still there, particularly in the vocals on "but home is nowhere" and "Bleed Black." To someone who only listens to pop on the radio, they would think this is punk. To someone who thinks Crass is real punk, they obviously wouldn't. If you look through the one-star reviews, a lot of them are from people who are mad that AFI "sold out" to sign to a major label and no longer sounds like they did when they were writing about breakfast cereal. Nor is this goth, per se, but if you only read the lyric sheet and looked at a photo of the band in this era, you might assume they are goth.
5-0 out of 5 stars AFI boldly goes in new directions...
Sing the Sorrow was my first introduction to AFI. Which is probably why I like it so much. I honestly find this album to be breathtaking. Its a true work of art, and a great sign of maturity from the band. The Art of Drowning is a great record, but this is really a step in a new direction for AFI. Have the sold out? Not at all. They just refined and have built off their old sound. While not abandoning the old sound completly, you can still tell that this is AFI, and there a few songs on this record that should please old AFI fans. But most the album is a step in a new direction, and I personally welcome that direction. A band can't keep creating the same album, it will get old. So no, this is not Black Sails, or Art of Drowning. But its a dang good record, and based off the number of copies it sold, alot of people think its dang good as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars The formula has gone sour
I love hatebreed, but it's now time to progress the style. This would've been a great cd if they had not already done the style 3 times in a row. The music sounds forced and generic. If this is the first hatebreed record you plan on buying, don't buy it. Anyone of the hatebreed records listed below will leave you more than happy, and will definitely be your moneys worth. As terrible as this album is, it's still worth seeing them live.
4-0 out of 5 stars Metallic Hardcore How It's Supposed To Be
If there is a hardcore band that I can appreciate these days for their musicmanship and originality, Hatebreed has my vote. This is REAL hardcore, no fashion involved here. The drumming is excellent, and Jamey Jasta sends actual messages with his lyrics. And I say "metallic", because Hatebreed may not exactly be considered a metal band, but they have the definite influence. This is a great record full of pure aggression. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supreme Effort
Cant beleive this is only getting some average reviews.I think this could be one of the best hatebreed and hardcore albums i've heard.Defeatist is one of the most brutal they've put out.Other great songs include destroy everything, which will be a mosh pit classic.give wings to my triumph, divine judgement, immortal enemies, and my personal favorite spitting venom.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cd marvel
I'm not particularly impressed by CD releases of old stuff. But having seen the Who twice at Tanglewood in Lenox Mass about the time of Tommy I can vouch for the feracity of their playing. Heaven and Hell they opened with in one show and I always wondered why it wasn't released. After seeing Entwistle with dual Sunn amps and a Fender bass I was led to buy a 2000S and Precision myself and played for quite a while with this combination. They had it right back then and even though the openers wereBB King, Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull in either venue, they remain the greatest live band in my mind. Just watching Keith Moon do a rim shot and blow his stick into the air and catch it on the way down without blowing the song was worth the price of admission for me. This album brings it all back.

5-0 out of 5 stars put that cigarette out...
Better than the original if only because there is more of it. Young Man Blues has to be one of the great rock covers and beats any Jimi you may want to compare it with (in my view). Fortune Teller is less than I expected (having read much about its role in the Who's development but never having heard it) and the version of A Quick One is not as good as the Kids Are Alright/Rock'n'Roll Circus version (the best rock TV performance ever - except for Iggy doing I;m Bored on Countdown in 1978 maybe). It's Meaty Beaty Big Bouncy and FAST. Love it or it'll kill ya.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take That, Bootleggers
Originally released as a means to have an official live album in the catalog, The Who are heard in their sonic splendor mixed with the straight-ahead R&B roots in the Leeds University concert from February 1970.

    Editorial Review

Recognizing that there's no such thing as bad publicity, manager-Svengali Malcolm McLaren molded the Pistols into the most confrontational, nihilistic band rock & roll had ever seen. Propelled by Johnny Rotten's maniacal vocals, Steve Jones's buzz-saw guitar, and (most importantly) bass player Glen Matlock's hook-filled compositional skills, the Pistols' early singles "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen" defined the raging style of British punk. By the time they recorded their lone 1977 album, Matlock had been bounced, replaced by the image-correct but utterly untalented (and ultimately group-dooming) Sid Vicious. Not a 10th as good as the singles, the album nontheless remains a bile-filled emblem of the times. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the sex pistols is punk rock the way it was meant to be
I agree, if you want to listin to emo and pop go ahead (You cant help it if your not grown up yet). But dont come in here and trash the best punk rock group ever because of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best album ever and you know it
i wish these kids that cant takereal punk rock would just admit it already emo is for kids!

1-0 out of 5 stars the most overrated album I know of
I can't get over the shock that people would actually like this album. Punk rock didn't really get good until bands like Pennywise, Descendents, and Green Day (their early stuff) came around. The only real good punk rock album in the style of the Sex Pistols is Wire's Pink Flag, which I'm pretty sure came first even but don't take my word for it. Anyway, it's an understatement to say I hate this album. I loathe it! I can't believe it, I just can-t.. URGH! How can this band have fans? They're like the Hawthorne Heights of the late 70's! The singer has no talent, the melodies just have no good chord progressions to offer (Anarchy In The U.K> is sort of good I guess, but other than that every track is just lame-o), and the lyrics are blah! If the Sex Pistols were trying to get a record deal in this day and age, they'd get laughed at because THEY SUCK! I'm seriously thinkin' that the 2000s is the best age of music yet in history. Classic rock is too inconsistent, only Van Halen, Quiet Riot, and Guns'N'Roses have come through for me there. Synth-pop was the worst era of music easily, and only starting in '89 with Nine Inch Nails' "Pretty Hate Machine" did good music start up again. Sorry, got off track there. I HATE THE SEX PISTOLS! For goodness sake, their name even is stupid.
