4-0 out of 5 stars All visions of this night we'll see
The Dreamside strike me as the female counterpart to Rammstein. Not exactly mind you, but there are parts scattered throughout Spin Moon Magic that just scream Rammstein. Other than that I'm extremely impressed with Spin Moon Magic. At times there's almost an epic feel but then there's times where it seems they're striving for nothing more than recognition in the radio world. That's also forgiveable seeing as how the strong vocals of Kemi and the excellent job the rest of the band does at creating soundscapes in each song.
4-0 out of 5 stars Old School Melodic Medal
I first got interested in this album when I heard "Spin Moon Magic" (title track) on a cheapie goth compelation CD I got at Hot Topic. So, I figured WTH and bought the album.I wasn't disappointed.Kemi Vita has a gorgeous voice and the above sample tracks don't do her justice.Track #6 "Somewhere Before" gives me goosebumps consistantly. My only complaint (and what's keeping me from giving it 5 stars) is that about half way through the album the songs start to get kinda repetative.Like if its playing in the background and you're not paying attension, you have to listen to the lyrics for a minute to know what song its on.But, even so, its still definately worth a listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Musical Magic
This band just gets better with every cd, and Spin Moon Magic may well be their strongest release thus far. Wonderful melodies, beautiful vocals and thought-provoking lyrics all blend together to create a fantastic dimension of lush dreams and musical magic. Buy this cd, you won't be disappointed! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Lame.
This product can be easliy described by the title of my review, lame. First off, this isn't an official release from HIM's record company (BMG/RCA). There is no music on this CD, just interviews. There is nothing on this CD that you can't easliy find on the internet, including their official web sites. The only cool thing about this is the little poster it comes with.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely marvelous
This memoir is simply excellent. If you're just beginning to know HIM, you should purchase this audio CD. It provides you with exquisite details on how the band began & how they got to where they are now. They tell you the biogrophies of Ville,Mige,Linde,Burton & Gas. It's great, even if you know them; there's possibly some new things that you just could find out from this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Knock Yer Socks Off Set - No overdubs used or needed!
These songs taken from 4 different shows in May of '84 show off the Cure with a terrific line-up that wasn't around for too long (even by Cure standards). M.V.P. Robert Smith is in fine form and his guitar is often massive, sometimes employing an effect that makes it sound like a jet taking off. Drummer Andy Anderson favors heavy-hitting beats and keeps everything very uptempo. Founding member Lol Tolhurst's role on keyboards, questionable as always, seems to be largely relegated to elongated notes, although they are often useful and effective. Multi-instrumentalist Porl Thompson rejoins the fold here, a super-talented guy who would go on to spend many years with the Cure. Abandoning his previous role as a control room wizard, Phil Thornally capably rounds out the quintet on bass.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE CURE AT THEIR EARLY 80'S PEAK
THIS IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN FOR ME, AT 16 IN 1984, WHEN THIS WAS RELEASED. I WASSEARCHING FOR NEW MUSIC, STUMBLED UPON THE CASSETTE VERSION ( MORE ABOUT THAT LATER ) OF "CONCERT" AND PLAYED IT TIL THE TAPE LITERALLY HISSED. COMPARING THE VERSIONS OF THE SONGS ON THIS CD TO THE STUDIO VERSIONS IS OFTEN LIKE NIGHT AND DAY.WHAT IS OFTEN MECHANICAL AND HEAVY SOUNDING ON RECORD, IS HERE ROLLICKING, AND YES, GROOVY, AT TIMES. TAKE FOR INSTANCE "CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES". THE ORIGINAL VERSION WAS SLOWER, PLODDING,FULL OF ANGST AND JUST A LITTLE TOO SERIOUS. THE LIVE VERSION HERE MAKES THE SONG AN ALMOST JOYOUS POP OCCASION. AND NO, THAT ISN'T AN ENTIRELY BAD THING. THE BAND HERE IS TOP NOTCH, AND STRIP THE SONGS DOWN TO THEIR BASICS. THE CURE HAD FINALLY GOTTEN A COMPETANT DRUMMER (POOR LOL JUST DIDN'T HAVE ONSTAGE "CHOPS" ) IN ANDY AnDERSON, AND HE IS LIKE THUNDER BEHIND THE KIT. ALL THE SONGS ( ESPECIALLY THE ONES THAT HAD USED WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A DRUM MACHINE ON RECORDS ) BENIFIT GREATLY FROM HIS SKILLS. MY ONE AND ONLY COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS CD IS THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE IT LONGER, BY THE INCLUSION OF THE ORIGINAL CASSETTE B-SDE CALLED "CURIOUSITY". FOR THE UNINITIATED,IT IS A COLLECTION OF THE CURE'S VERY EARLY, SOMETIMES MORE ESOTERIC MATERIAL, ALL OF IT LIVE, TAKEN FROM ROBERT SMITH'S PERSONAL TAPE COLLECTION. OVER THE YEARS, I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO FIND MOST OF IT ON THE INTERNET.BUT AN OFFICIAL RELEASE ON CD WOULD MAKE THIS "CONCERT" WHOLE, AT LEAST FOR ME.

4-0 out of 5 stars The real "Play Out"
For those that associate Cure live shows with limp, if faithful, reads of their later synth-heavy stuff, this disc should open your eyes. They play the hell out of these songs; and, this album really shows that underneath all the production on their studio stuff is a band made of rock-n-roll fans. This album is also great because it makes a compelling case for the quality of the album THE TOP (which is the tour from which this disc comes). They totally sell that material on this, and show why stuff like Give Me It and Shake Dog Shake are A-list early Cure material. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Glitch warning
Some copies will have a strange glitch beginning at 1:30 in The End of the World...you will hear nothing but a garbled mess of noise.
5-0 out of 5 stars BSIDES.... oh YES
Simply put, "This Morning" is one of the most terrifically sad and intense Cure songs EVER.Everything about this track just screams anger, confusion, and sadness.Buy this single, if only for that track... "Fake" is also a great song, sort of about how you can't have cake and eat it too.Robert Smith is a genius.

4-0 out of 5 stars great B-sides from a great band
I'll keep this brief since it's only a 3 track disc.Basically if you have the "Join The Dots" B-side boxset, you know the Cure make some great B-sides, which in many cases are better than the album tracks. The End of the World is no exception; both bonus tracks would have been great on the Cure's last album.Another reviewer mentioned that a double album would have been appropriate--actually that was Robert Smith's original intention, to have one disc of upbeat tunes and one disc of downers. If you listen to all of the tracks from the last session, you can figure out how the double album might have sounded.Personally I like their down tracks more but the schizophrenic balance of happy & melancholy is what makes the Cure so unique.Anyway, if you are a Cure fan, a real Cure fan, then the two bonus tracks are a bargain at only a few dollars. If you only like their radio pop hits then you might want to stick with Galore or Staring At The Sea, but if that were the case you probably wouldn't be looking at this single in the first place. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Victorian Rock & Roll?
I don't know what the hell I was looking for at Borders Books this afternoon, probably some sort of earth physics tome, but luckily I wound up in the alternative CD section, where my eye fell on Rasputina for the first time.Truth told, my eye fell on a promo sticker reading "Rockin-Cello," and upon closer scrutiny it turned out to be Rasputina.Never having heard of them before, but being a person of good faith in music, I made the purchase anyway.I needn't describe the contents of "The Lost and Found"---those of you who know Rasputina don't need another analysis of the sound, and it's difficult to accurately describe it to a virgin who's never heard Rasputina before. These are covers, to be sure, of some old rock standards, but Rasputina poses no threat to the integrity of the originals.Rather, Rasputina manages to reinvent the songs in such a way that... well, imagine if you dropped the sheet music of Led Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll" into a time portal and it was recovered sometime in the mid-19th Century by a chamber music society.A chamber music society prone to imbibing absinthe, let's say, and completely uninhibited when it came to interpreting Led Zeppelin using classical instrumentation. That's the sound, or as near as I can describe it, of Rasputina.I found it charming, inventive, and sexy, and I became an instant Rasputina fan---so much so that I ordered all of their available music after a few listens to "The Lost & Found"...The only real drawback to this CD is that it's less than a half-hour in length. So much for the theory that this isn't a good introduction to Rasputina---it's a great introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost with time but found and reclaimed
I've never been a very big fan of Rasputina's music (and I'm still not) but this 2nd Edition EP contains some great Gothic Rock tunes! I'm not familiar with most of the originals but these gals kick some major butt in their trademark corsets, covering songs from the legendary Pink Floyd ("Wish You Were Here") to CCR ("Bad Moon Rising") to Marilyn Manson ("Tourniquet") to Pat Benatar ("Fire & Ice") as they blend together dark, heavy guitar riffs with haunting/wailing cellos like you've never heard them before. And if you think that's absurd, wait until you hear their morbid take of a children's nursery rhyme on "This Little Piggy"... 4-0 out of 5 stars fun collection of covers

    Editorial Review

Like a hand coming out of the shadows in a horror movie, Love and Rockets' new release catches you off guard; it's their most cohesive album in 10 years. Continuing the foray into electronica that the boys made with their last release (the dreadful Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A stamp of brilliance
Love and Rockets seem to have always aimed for surprising themselves and the public (with switching trends and styles, like early J & M Chain for example). With Lift, Love and Rockets just seem to hit a jackpot of artistic ephiphany. This is a landmark album, that weaves together the most diverse array of styles and structures that L & R have ever dabbled in. Best of all, it's strength comes from its cohesion. Most everything they did before seems like it was a smart assemblage of the contrasting Ash stuff and David J stuff. This one really goes way beyond that. From start to finish, it is a solid tour de force. The instrumental "Lift", in it's opening and closing versions, makes a powerful statement, and is staggering in its ambient atmosphere. It seems to me that Ash's interest in electronica peaks right here, and will be hard to surpass in his solo work. Fans of Tones on Tail should be content with Lift's overall interplay of electronic and acoustic sounds.
4-0 out of 5 stars Different and Worth It
I have had this one in my collection since it came out in the stores, and was not expecting a techno-influenced album at all.Not like that is a bad thing....it is actually like a breath of fresh air.I really enjoyed the techno beats mixed with the unmistakable sound of Daniel Ash's voice, it was very pleasing to the ears and kept the mind alive. Many people tend to get annoyed by artists changing their style, but it in fact does not change as much as it evolves. And that is exactly what this album is, it seems like an expansion of their style and interests, very kept up to date and not overly exploited.Just like it should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Often overlooked gem

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly
Sweet god, what a great record. The music and the way it was recorded in the studio is just AMAZING.Love and Rockets here give us one of the most solid records I've heard from the 1980's.The songs are fresh sounding solid rock (injected with a sense of grandeur and not a trace of sugar coated fakeness - yet it has huge mainstream appeal they play L&R on the radio a lot), you could tell it was a new direction for Daniel Ash & Co.Just a fantastic record from the 80's amazing blend of rock, synthesizer, drums and good lyrics!Take a dash of Beatles, throw in some Jesus & Mary Chain, some Bluesy Rock, Dylan and finally a nice thick layer of gothic roots - then you have Love and Rockets.
5-0 out of 5 stars better than best
this albumn has been compared to abbey road.that's generous, but not excedingly.it is my favorite record from the 80's.highly recommend purchasing this issue.has singles and mixes and stuff.good great better than best.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Classic L&R release. Done right
When this record first arrived, I was hooked. I was already a big Tones On Tail fan and the Ball Of Confusion 12" had me ready for the LP. I thought I knew what to expect. Boy, was I mistaken. This album far exceeds any expectation I could have ever had. A true 80's psychedelic masterpiece. The only problem? The CD reissues never were the same version as the album. Several different mixes on different releases, always diluting the stew. Until now. Here it is the original mix, in the original running order AND all of the various mixes (well, most of them due to time constraints) and B-sides too!

4-0 out of 5 stars A break from the usual "gothic" mix...
Ok, so I picked this CD up on a whim at a Hot Topic store where I live at about the same price, six dollars or so. With the CD in my car as I drove home, I found myself skipping the first few tracks, passing them off as the usual "goth rock" dross. But when my cd player reached track 10, with Corvus Corax's "Venus Vina Musica," I found myself hard pressed to cease my spontaneous motion, driven by the blasting pagan/tribal drums in the song. Track eleven is also inruiging, with it's middle-eastern influenced vocals. Upon reaching track twelve "dragonfly," one may hear the harmonious sound of a sequenced piano, melding into a beautiful and very well-made EBM track. The brooding and throbbing bass of "Wo Versteckt Sich Gott" will move you and at the same time, make you wish you knew German. And after hearing all of this, I started at the beginning of the cd, and found that I didn't have much negativity to speak of the cd in general. The genres presented here are far beyond the goth cd I though this was, and the last track on the cd proves this. This cd is an eclectic, mistifying, exciting, and memorable mix wehich is well worth it's price.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hotter Than Summertime!
Kudos to Dancing Ferret for releasing a budget priced compilation with a little of everything for everyone! Even those who do not have a penchant for dark music will find many of the tracks approachable. There is no doubt that many of the tracks featured here will find there way into the underground clubs to last throughout the summer and beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a Garden of Delight...
I loved this when it first came out, and I still love it.The Mission shine in this album, despite some opinions to the contrary. This album is a complete departure from what Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams were doing as members of The Sisters of Mercy. The lyrics are uplifting, the vocals are great, and the guitar work fantastic. The Mission's version of Garden of Delight and Dance on Glass are utterly awesome, and are more than a little swipe, (as in I can do this better than you!), at their former bandmate.Great little album, and fantastic band.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not The Best Of The Mission

If you own no other post goth album - fer the gods' sake buy this.I've listened to it on vinyl and on cd and I never can get beyond it being the best gothic(non-depressing) album since 1985.If you want depressing, get the Cure's "pornography" or joy division's "unknown pleasures".On the other hand - if you want music that gives you hope and take's your hand and leads you, then go for this gothic classic. They haven't given up the ghost - why should you? 5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had Been There!
I usually steer clear of live albums, but as a half-crazed "Love and Rockets" fanatic, I'm glad I didn't pass this one up. Freakingly outstanding in every way. This goes down as one of the best concert albums of all time rivalling anything I've heard including The Cult, Talking Heads, Bauhaus, et al.........

4-0 out of 5 stars I was at this show!
The bulk of this album is taken from the Sweet FA tour stop on April 9, 1996 at the Metro in Chicago. If you follow the used bins at your local wax depot, you've probably seen this album labelled as a 'radio only' disc (meaning only meant to be broadcast by radio stations, not purchased by consumers) or maybe even heard it played over the airwaves as part of your local rock station's programming.Anyway, an 8-song version of this album was floating around pretty good as a bootleg in the music stores, so to recoup some of the sales L&R put a proper copy out for all to enjoy. The tail-end of the album comes from a different concert back in the late 80's in California and was previously available as B-sides to a few of their singles. As for which singles the songs appeared depended on whether you were looking to purchase vinyl, cassette, or CD.4-0 out of 5 stars great live cd
this cd shows the progression of Love and Rockets. the newer material shows a rock band with glam influences..ie, current dance, sampling, and drum and guitar. this version of the hit "So Alive" is the "dirty" version which is stripped down to just drum and guitar, no samples. a lot of the "newer" old songs are stripped down, guitar and drums.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Bauhaus to your house...
Roll your eyes down your throat and spit'em out for all I care..this IS GOTH, the start and the end.....Bauhaus is the band....this is the Vibe, and the pulse of wanky pretentious art rock we all know and LOVE!!!!....still sounds great, I think I'll spin it RIGHT NOW!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful death, screaming
it might be stupid to try and define the goth genre, but if there is such a thing this album should be first on the list. bauhaus has an incredible way of using their rock instruments to create great moments of pain and release. they have characteristically twangy guitars and sharp drums, and they know how to use it to inflict pain. however, even if it is artificial pain, they certainly managed to use their instruments in an immensely creative way to convey their deathly fantasies. peter murphy's voice gets on some people's nerves, but i think he's a really amazing vocalist with harmonized screams and hurls. and they kick ass for a rock band as well. this album is really essential for any punk/goth fan, especially if you like your music dark. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Completely Underrated...Way Better Than Ceremony
This album is The Cults follow up to "Ceremony" which many Cult fans consider to be their worst album. And it is. This album is a massive improvement over Ceremony, which wasn't even that horrible anyway. The Cult isn't really a band, it's more of a duo with guest performers. Vocalist Ian Astbury and Guitarist Billy Duffy are The Cult, but their lineup didn't go through very significant changes until they did this album. The drummer and bassist on this album (I don't know their names) wouldn't appear on the following album "Beyond Good and Evil."This is definitely an album a person needs to listen to a few times; The first time I listened to it, I didn't like it...It took time for the songs to really sink in. The first track is the hardest to accept; It sounds completely differently from other Cult songs. It sounds like a song a band would be performing in a smoky bar. Ian Astbury (who I think has one of rocks most unique voices) doesn't let it go to waste here. His vocals are in peak form here; Billy Duffy delivers some of his best guitar solos here. "Coming Down (Drug Tongue)" is one of the coolest Cult songs ever. It's probably the least known Cult album, but it's a great one and seriously worth checking out. Here's a list of the tracks and some (slightly) more in depth commentary:
4-0 out of 5 stars Cult
Although the best records by The Cult are Electric and Love, this is not a bad CD. You can listen to it with emotion and knowing you have a good group of rock, like Grand Funk, Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb.
The Cult are a band that never really stood still-- after evolving from pretty much a goth band with the pomp of psychedelia into a straight ahead hard rock band, they kept moving, and their eponymous album (their sixth overall) was something altogether different-- a "modern rock" album of sorts, embracing some of the ideals of the exploding grunge movement from Seattle but not joining fully with it.One thing that's obvious-- playing this album today, 12 years after it's release, it sounds as fresh as it did when it came out.

3-0 out of 5 stars "In the Year 2525'"
Carl's cover of "In the Year 2525" is my favorite thing on the album (it's leagues better than FotN's cover of Roxy Music's "In Every Dreamhome a Heartache").I like the original Zager and Evans version up till a point, but Carl's is really kickass. At first, I found it out of place, but now prefer it to the rest of the album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Real gothic rock returns courtesy of Mr. McCoy of course!!!
I've been a Fields of the Nephilim fan since a friend exposed me to their Buring the Fields EP just before Dawnrazor was released in 1986 or 87. I still have everything they ever released on vinyl for God's sake! I only flirted with the goth lifestyle (if there is such a thing) back in high school and freshman year of college, but FotN has been there all along the way. To say that this music has staying power is an understatement! That said, Mourning Sun is so incredibly refreshing and reassuring in an era when the music press tells us that corporate packaged pap like Evanascence, Marilyn Manson, and various death metal bands or pop in black mascara are gothic rock. Beyond comparisons to the wannabe-goth of today, it is simply a great album! For anyone who hasn't heard Fields of the Nephilim's "Dawnrazor," "The Nephilim," and "Elizium" albums (not to mention Sisters of Mercy's "First and Last and Always" and "Floodland," and The Mission's "The First Chapter" and "God's Own Medicine"), first buy those! Then, buy Mouring Sun!!! It is by far the finest true gothic rock album released since Elizium, what?, 16 years ago?

5-0 out of 5 stars the crown jewel of 4ad
Wow, I cannot believe that it has been nearly 20 years since I first heard "A Day" on the dancefloor at the new wave/goth club Blitz in Phoenix. The DJ used to play the remix of A Day, and I can remember thinking "this is the coolest song ever". I asked the DJ who it was and I understood him as saying "Zylocks" so I looked for Zylocks records for a year (I was only 13). Needless to say, I finally saw the light, got the album and it has been in semi regular rotation ever since. Recently I met a new friend that is just as crazy about the whole post-punk/goth/synthpop thing, and he has felt the same way about this album since he was a kid. It is one of the few albums that when I put it on, I let it play in it's entirity. It would seem a sacrilige to take it off half way through. So light some candles and insense and read some Poe, Dickinson, Or The Grey Garden, something dark and lovely and enjoy this album swirling in the background.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first CD
My first experience with Xymox was actually their 1989 album 'Twist of Shadows' which I purchased on cassette. After being quite impressed with the entire album I bought 'Clan of Xymox' on compact disc which is, in my opinion, their best and most original work to date. And as mentioned by another fan, the almost 'other-worldly' vocals of Mr. Moorings are what really makes the group stand out. Seems like most people either love or hate this album. For me, it's definitely a classic, and every bit as enjoyable now as the day I first listened.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated.FAR from their best.
It's old, dated and not very good at all.I love Xymox and their later albums are FAR better than this. It's all pompous, self agonising nonsense with a pretty low production level. If you find it cheap as a 2nd hand give it a go if you must.NOT worth buying new.Trust me, don't be tempted!Notes From The Underground, Xymox Live and Creatures blow this old junk into the abyss. This can be viewed as a demo disc but that's about it.FAR too much boring sampling and clanking noise. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Timeless masterpiece that will forever remain
Back in 1988 was when I first heard this album I became instantly addicted to the soundscape & atmosphere that the Nephilim created on this record. I still love it now in 2005 and can honestly say that the album sounds just as good now as it did back in 1988!. The originality of the songs and sounds on this awesome record make it so unique and I do not think any other band will come along in my life time and make such an impression as did the nephilim. A Classic on it's own!

5-0 out of 5 stars A band of epic stature emerges
As the album begins, it seems as though The Nephilim picks up where Dawnrazor left off, with consecutive tracks of potent Gothic guitar rock.Endemoniada, The Watchman and Moonchild are all excellent as Goth singles.5-0 out of 5 stars Last Exit For The Lost
"Nephilim" is one of those rare albums that will forever change you. From the haunting strains of Celebrate to the discordant brilliance of Last Exit For the Lost there are no momnets that will not engage you in a dream like duality of mind and body.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A transitional album, A substandard remaster
1980 saw the rebirth of the Banshees after the departure of two original members the previous year. `Kaleidoscope' displays the transition and experimentation of a band trying to re-develop their sound with the addition of new and guest musicians. Typical of the situation, the results are mixed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sound & Extras!
The bonus tracks are as follows...
4-0 out of 5 stars A solid reissue of a solid album
Shortly before the recording of "Kaleidescope," the original drummer and bassist quit the band, leaving vocalist Siouxsie Sioux and bassist Steve Severin to hunker down and soldier on, preparing demos of new material (some of which are included here as bonus tracks).Remarkably (but not surprisingly), the two managed to expand on all that the band had yet accomplished.
