4-0 out of 5 stars Challenging, but distinct.
Two women, two cellos, one man. Corsets and Indian Headdresses.
5-0 out of 5 stars great
I try not to give 5 star ratings often, but I think this release merits one. This album is about as good as a cello-based rock album with quirky female vocals can be.
4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, finally.
I've been a fan of Raputina for a long, long time.As a cellist -and music nerd- I have always held this band in high regard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sell outs never sounded so good!
Of course Stiv--RIP--Bators sold out after disbanding the infamous Dead Boys (whose debut LP is an unadulterated punk classic), but compared to such shallow KISS acolyte contemporaries as Motley Crue, or even (don't laugh) that awful Canadian band Platinum Blonde, this stuff was and is much, much better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gimme some russian roulette...
The Lords of the New Church were a neglected 80's goth/punk band. This CD is a greatest hits of sorts which includes Dance With Me (which had minor play on MTV in the early 80's), Method To My Madness, and Russian Roulette (my favorite song by them). They even covered Madonna's "Like A Virgin" which is included on this cd. If you're into 80's goth such as Bauhaus, check out the Lords today!

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Good, But Some Odd Selections
This was my first experience into the Lords music. Being a huge Stiv/Dead Boys fan, after the initial shock at the format/content changes, the songs became mainstays in my CD lineup. However, as I grew as a fan, I began to realize how a number of these selections, "Opening Nightmares," "Dreams and Desires," "A Gun Called Justice," and "Hey Tonight" are all good songs, there are more "Lordsy" songs that should've been included. "Pretty Baby Scream," "Partners In Crime," and the biggest omission, "Livin' on Livin'," are all selections that are much better representations of who the Lords were: A great garage band, exploring new territories all the time. The other included tracks that I felt should've been omitted seemed more like studio experiments and corporate pushes ("Like a Virgin, anyone?) All in all, a pretty good anthology and great introduction into the Lords of the New Church and who they were. "Killer Lords" is a great first CD, but their self-titled debut is where the listener starts to see what kind of band they were. Turner and James inherently playing surf rock, Tregunna on bass with some of the tastiest and simplest riffs, and of course, Stiv Bators, one of the greatest frontmen ever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Hits Collection
If you are a fan of HIM you need this. This is a great collection of songs. It truly is the hits. All of my favorite song are on here. There is a differnt version of Buried Alive by Love and it's better then the first. The booklet turns into a poster. One side is the whole band and one is just of Ville.

4-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate for V:tM, as well as for general unlife...
While I've heard a few tracks from this album, I'm still counting the coins to pay for it and its shipping.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good music, bad game.
As a real old-school goth- one who was listening to gothic music and dressing in goth-style thrift clothes in 1983- I have to say this is a good music compilation. Each song is a good representative of the goth subculture, though a bit too modern to be a real sampler of goth.
4-0 out of 5 stars I have a split personality, and this CD made me realize it!
Ok, I absolutely LOVE this CD. I am no where NEAR being anything of a goth epicurian, and after listening to this CD I immediately looked for each artists' websites and/or music clips online. Sadly, I didn't find anything else that really peaked my ears like this CD did. I have to hand it to the complitation team, they did an AMAZING job of picking out songs that - I feel - were of a specific aura and putting them in one spot. MAKE MORE!!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best comps ever...
Alright, I bought this comp after my record collection was stolen at a CD release party i DJ'd.I had albums by, and the albums featuring, most of the artist and tracks on Disc one "Goth Side" and a few disc by some of the artist on the "Industrial Side", even once Dj'd a party that "Razed in Black" performed at, but alot of the songs were new to me (don't listen to alot of industrial.) Disc 3 "Remix Side" features some great mixes, aall of these disc read like a good playlist from your local goth/industrial night.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great alternative music
An exceptional recall of some great alternative music, which was created before anyone called it "Goth".

4-0 out of 5 stars As advertised
The songs I recognized by title I already owned - they were often the reason I'd bought the original album. After getting this, I recognized many more by ear. This 3-disk set is damn impressive for the price - it bore a startling resemblance to sets played by local Goth or Industrial DJ's depending on the CD.The 3rd disc of remixes was a nice touch as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars ***comfort in darkness***
In the current musical mood of whiney bands singing about fake depression and supposedly "dark" passages of songs...ie. 15 seconds of a minor chord, it isironacaly refreshing to find a band that projects genuine sadness in their music. This is not done through whiney vocals and teenage-poetry lyrics however. It is conveyed through a mixture of beautiful, classically trained vocal passages, mournful piano amd sweeping strings which are all mixed into virgins black dark yet beautiful brand of doom metal meeting neoclassical music.
5-0 out of 5 stars opera metal music is reborn again
virgin black is an unbeleivable band i could'nt beleive my ears when i bought this cd and listen to it, iv'e been listening to opeth for the past six months and virgin black is the only band that has pulled me from listening to opeth. new comers trust me don't listen to the 30 second sound clips because theres not enough there to let you know what kind of band they are i recommend just buy the album you want be disappointed, if youre looking for something different then virgin black is the way to start

5-0 out of 5 stars Something more then what you'd expect.
Sombre Romantic is a step up if you will in the gothic metal genre. It is a very solid album from start to finish but has alot of layers that keep things interesting. Its not what you would really consider to be a "religious" album but there are many undertones that help get the message across. This point being made very clear in "Museum of Iscariot" which talks of Jesus from Judas' point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really quite good
I agree with all of the positive views expressed by those that wrote before me. But my personal favourite is Stigmata Martyr. Nice creeping bassline. If you're in two minds about buying this album let me solve the problem for you: buy it. Simple, and I've saved you valuable time, that you can now use to listen to one of the best live albums out there. In fact, just buy all of the Bauhaus albums. Then check' em out in concert. They've still got it, and the bass will shake you from the top of your dyed black hair to the tips of your pointy black boots.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a new direction
If you read in the CD liner notes, Bella Morte say that this album is in no way the musical direction the band is going, they just wanted to make an EP that focused on their more "punk" sounding stuff. It's a good thing because this is nowhere near as good as their previous efforts.I don't like Bella Morte's punk stuff, or punk music in general, I actually like the more electronic stuff a whole lot better. "Where Shadows Lie" is my favorite album, and "The Quiet" my second.I bought this because I'm a huge fan of the band, and I figured that I'd like pretty much anything they did, but this is pushing it.I can't say I hate this, but I definately don't like it either. There's really nothing outstanding on here, and it feels like there's a lack of emotion throughout. I only listened to it a few times, then I put on "Where Shadows Lie" and listened to some good Bella Morte.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than As The Reasons Die
We see Bella Morte getting significantly better with Songs For The Dead, even if it is a departure from what we are used to from the band. First off, is the addition of a new, real drummer(who has since been replaced). The real drums ad a great organic feel to the band, having only heard programmed beats before. The Bass is still good and prominent, but what rules this EP even over Andy's usual melodic crooning is the guitar...its WAY up there this time. Their keyboard player adds nice little hooks here and there, making some of the songs almost jazzy, which is a nice change. Songs like Legend find the band becoming more Deathrock than anything else, which according to the band, is going to be the future of Bella Morte. In a press release they stated that they were "leaving behind the electronic-driven style of the past." I loved Where Shadows Lie(their peak performance!) and I will miss that specific sound, but the band may make it as a punk/death rock act. This EP serves as a great transitional piece that will lead into whatever the band decides to do next. My only one complaint is Andy's vocals. If Bella Morte is going to make their music more punk rockish, then he needs to stop doing the super melodic gothy vocals. No offense I really like his voice but he totally carried it way too far trying to sound passionate on As The Reasons Die. By rights he could totally have been in the backstreet boys if he were doing that type of music...thankfully hes not! So ya, to make a long story short, this is a band to be watched for sure. I recommend Where Shadows Lie and The Quiet above all b/c those records are their best work. Their first EP, The Deathrock EP wasnt that good and not nearly as experimental as this one. Remains, their first record is good too, albiet a little premature....avoid As The Reasons Die completely and buy this EP...its a fun listen. Nuff said.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Effort
EP's are funny, they can be really good or really bad, this EP fits in the middle. I just picked it up yesterday, i was liking Where Shadows Lie more then this though. it seems Bella Morte is pushing more towards the Punk sound then the 80's goth rock i was used to. None the less, this is an ok EP. Its worth checking out since its priced cheap. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag
I want to like this series of reissues a whole lot more than I do. The sound quality is great, and the lean, angular sounds of this album are given a new punch and sparkle through the remastering.
5-0 out of 5 stars Early Cure - Quirky Pop-Rock That's Waaaaay Addictive
There's something about the primitive innocence of early Cure that makes me want to listen to it again and again. I'm a dyed-n-the-wool Cure fan, which means I like or at least appreciate nearly everything they do, but this early stuff is really melodic and could potentially appeal to a much bigger crowd than, say, PORNOGRAPHY ever could. Yes, the American release of THREE IMAGINARY BOYS (renamed BOYS DON'T CRY) is superior, but Disk 1 presents the album in its original form - that's history, baby! Yes, "Killing An Arab" belongs here, but that song's pretty easy to come by anyway. "Plastic Passion" is also missing, but you can get that one on the JOIN THE DOTS B-side collection which is worth getting for the first disk alone (and, of course, there's always downloading). Obviously, this expanded package is aimed at the die-hard fans, but some of the unreleased tracks on Disk 2 are superior to many of the TIB tracks (IMHO). There's a lot of really cool music on Disk 2 that's worth discovering even if you're not a big fan. There's also a few well-known singles and some demos that are mostly of interest to the die-hards.
4-0 out of 5 stars Only for die-hards
If you like The Cure and are interested in hearing their early material, this re-issue might be for you. Punk fans may also appreciate this. The album itself is a little spotty, with the high-points being '10.15 Saturday Night', the incredibly catchy 'Grinding Halt', and the haunting 'Fire In Cairo'. The demos were interesting to hear once or twice, but they don't have much lasting value. On the second disc, I found the demos 'I Just Need Myself', 'Heroin Face', and 'I Want to Be Old' most entertaining. The second disc also contains the studio tracks 'Jumping Someone Else's Train' and 'Boys Don't Cry' are included, as they were not on the original 'Three Imaginary Boys' but were included on the American 'Boys Don't Cry' album. In short, this is a great re-issue for a hardcore Cure fan that likes punk, but you can get all the best songs off this re-issue on the 'Boys Don't Cry' album (the one with the pyramid and the palm trees). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A blissfully stark performance
Ok, I'm giving 17 Seconds the 5 star treatment because I love the Cure. Not recommended for casual fans because the minimalist approach taken during these sessions runs the risk of turning off those listeners who are hooked on the fuller sounds of 'Disintegration' and'Wish'.
5-0 out of 5 stars stark, hauntingly seductive--the Cure's first masterpiece
Robert Smith explains in the 2005 2 CD deluxe edition reissue of "Seventeen Seconds" that this is "the first record I felt was really The Cure", and although I feel this statement is pushing it a bit, it's still very understandable. Although Smith was just turning 21 around the time of "Seventeen Seconds"' initial release in April of 1980, the Cure had already made their first masterpiece.(It has now been reissued in single CD form in April of 2006.)
3-0 out of 5 stars The first "real" Cure album
If you're new to the Cure, you problably know them as a "gloomy" goth band. Well, if you pick up their first CD(Three Imaginary Boys), you would never have known. Their second album, Seventeen Seconds, took the band to a very dark place. Of coure, they got MUCH darker on the next two albums.

To the person who said "save your money and buy a Sisters of Mercy cd instead," I just have to shake my head.Come on now, are you serious?I really love Paralysed Age, they have a very dark, passionate sound that's unlike any other band out there.I also love how their music is inspired by the stories of Edgar Allan Poe, evidenced by their songs "Berenice" and "Morella's Sleep."Paralysed Age are both Romantic and Gothic, and I really miss the Romantic side of goth, which, thanks to these talented Germans, continues to live on.

"The Best of Rare Cult" is a compilation of tracks from the exhaustive "Rare Cult" boxed set, and much to the chagrin of someone like myself who ponied up the cash for the box, also includes five tracks not in the "Rare Cult" boxed set.I'm actually a bit shocked that Beggars' Banquet would have resorted to this sort of marketing ploy, but nonetheless, the set is what it is.

The Cult, from their Gothic beginnings of Southern Death Cult, to Death Cult, and then Love. Ya stop there and ya got what ya got here. This CD steers clear of the heavier side (Electric, Sonic Temple) and perfectly bridges the gap that as they explained in the liner notes, was too far to cross for hard core Love fans to get to Electric. As with Love Removal Machine, hell- this version with more of the Love sound is just as good and it's Metal brother on Electric to me! All the songs are catchy and very spiritual, as you would expect with any Cult CD. The sound quality is great, so you don't feel cheated as with some "rare cuts and live stuff" CD's. The material here is like having a brand spankin new Cult album, and it feels the same cuz radio Still won't touch the good stuff. Hell, I thought the Cult CD that came out in about 94 (the one with the black bull on it, or whatever that is) was amazing. It was heavy , it was alternative, and for some reason , you were lucky if you heard Coming Down maybe once a month anywhere , so be your own person, screw the mainstream trendy Ted's , and get this awesome CD. ... If you prefered the Beatles' Abby Road to Rubber Soul, if you prefered the Police's Syncronicity to Reggatta de Blanc, you willenjoy this for the same reasons; tension and discord at the end of a great band's flight, making for a wildly dynamic album that's full of surprises. Previous albums wallowed in redundant, sloppy, sanctimonious goth sillyness and far too many cuts that were simply self-indulgent wastes of the listeners' time. In this Burning From the Inside, every cut is a master-stroke and no two are similar. It ranges from profound to wacky to haunting to beautiful (though I could apply more adjectives than would fit in this space). The likes of Bela Legosi and Passion of Lovers has been left behind here, though their punk asthetics are still present in earnest except that here, they are applied in strategic highlights rather than in a clumsy wash. Of the other Bauhaus albmus, I only bother with a few songs from each but from Burning...I relish every song.

3-0 out of 5 stars remembering bauhaus
    bauhausisrememberingthepastandpresentof a greatcollection

4-0 out of 5 stars good but could have been alot better.
the last album bauhaus ever recorded. i really want to like alot of it. however at times its difficult, some of it is just way to melodramatic to the point of being irritating. i love bauhaus and i like this albumbut it just seems like they were struggling to be goth now, whereas on the first two genres they sort of created the genre by just being themselves. alot of the punky influences are gone and the playing is alot more slick so if youre into dark meloncholy melodrama then i would recommend this but if youre looking for more aggressive, up tempo bauhaus tracks then i would recommend buying Mask, the bands first album. over all i liked the songs "honeymoon croon" and "she's in parties". but i only listenedto this album about three times through. i guess it really wasnt my thing. sorry bauhaus, sorry daniel ash, sorry pete. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't like it at first, give it another try
Although the Crxshadows are among my favourite bands, I have never enjoyed any releases of theirs upon the first hearing. It's always taken two listenings to get to the eventual state of adoration. I think it's quite possible that this is true for other fans or even first-time listeners of the band- If you're not completely enamoured of Frozen Embers by the third listening, you most likely will feel the same about the other albums. This was my first of theirCDs, an esteemed member of my CD rack, and a learning experience. You can't always judge a CD by hearing it once.

3-0 out of 5 stars Out of the frying pan, into the fire
While some of the remixes were decent, all in all, it seemed like too much of the same thing.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This CD is extraordinary. You can feel the emotion pouring out from each song. This is definately a masterpiece. Rogue and the Cruxshadows have outdid themselves again. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not just for non-Wiccans
I discovered Wicca in '68 and Coven in '69 and unlike a previous reviewer thinks, I so liked this album, especially Jinx' vocals. And I do not feel I compromised my belief in Wicca by admiring this album.
3-0 out of 5 stars It Has Its Charm
If nothing else, got to give them credit for being so bold, especially back in the late sixties. I found this in a used record store in Palmdale and my wife and I just had to get it. As it turned out, the music was okay, nothing special on first listen. Sort of reminded me of Jefferson Airplane.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best one so far
This is Scarling.'s earliest incarnation and in my opinion their finest release to date. There's just something more raw and volatile to it than displayed in any of their later releases. The band's line-up has changed a few times since this album and it shows in the songs. While only about 40 minutes long, it's a great album, very reminiscent of 90's alternative music. Amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
Wow, this is good. I love this CD. The lyrics, Jessicka's voice, the guitars...it rocks. Each song sounds different for the last. I love it. Black Horse Ridding Star is my favorite. Very remescent of JOJ but a original sound. A must have for any JOJ fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brillant!!!
I love this CD. Such a cool sound. Buy it and you'll thrash it. Anyway I have to go listen to it again.

A breaking point you say?Well , not entirely, the Cox do what they are good at here and that is realising addictive and effective melodic moods gothic music without losing themselves in endless dwelling like so many other goth acts appear to be enjoying.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow.They're finally back.
