3-0 out of 5 stars Not Remasterd nor re-issued
This is one of my favorite bands and when i saw that Express and Earth, Sun, Moon. were available as remasterd / reissues i jumped on it.Express is.This album is not.Copyright 1987 Beggars Banquet. Now I have two copies of the same thing.I give it three stars ONLY because it is a GREAT album, none the less.

5-0 out of 5 stars viva nostalgia!
love and rocket's 'acoustic' album, 'earth, sun, moon' was quite a departure from densely sonic and chugging 'express.' tracks like 'kundalini express' and 'holiday on the moon' were replaced with tracks like 'waiting for the flood' and l&r's signature track, 'no new tale to tell.'the album is wrought with emotive acoustic arrangements, accentuated by daniel ash's and david j's dichotomous vocals.david j had the more deadpan delivery while daniel ash had the more melodic voice and more range. that, however, made the band that much better.
4-0 out of 5 stars I Would Take This One to My Grave
I have had this CD through many phases of my life, and the music has been a soothing soundtrack through both the thick and the thin. There was a time when I was really down and out financially a few years ago and I had to sell just about every CD I owned, but I did not give this one up.So, in my opinion it is one of the best that I own.As many people have said in their reviews, it is good music. It is the kind that you can't label. The lyrics have actual meaning, and the music is actually worthwhile to listen to.Yet it is nearly impossible to categorize. And honestly, I think that's a good thing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Skittish people beware
I hate the term Goth. It just lumps everyone who wears black into the same brooding category. By that definition Avril Levine is Goth. Bauhaus is much more than the sum of its parts. With sparse atmospheric guitars, haunting vocals and syncopated rhythms Bauhaus has one foot in the graveyard and the other in the land of Ziggy Stardust. I can't imagine "Hollow Hills"; a song about fairy hills and what happens to unsuspecting human travelers who wander into them, ever being played on the radio. With a passion for the minimalistic, Bauhaus somehow manages to create a sound that fills your head with visions of dancing skeletons, and wailing banshees across the moors. Listen with the lights off if you dare.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Progression
After making a cornerstone album in gothic music ("In The Flat Field") Bauhaus apparently decided that it would be a good idea to make a dance-friendly version of said record. Mask only really holds true to what you may consider true Bauhaus form in such tracks as "The Passion of Lovers" "Hollow Hills" and "Mask", the rest of this album is consistent (mostly) of spooky-pop tracks that may make you question your existence if you're of the mascara-wearing-all-black-dressing-death-rock-loving mold (and not in the usually sad bastard questioning of existence kind of way either). If you get the CD it has a bonus Ska song! Neat, huh?
5-0 out of 5 stars A monolith of creative darkness...
Bauhaus (and their lack of mainstream acceptance) is proof perfect that people prefer their music bland, mindless, and about ten years behind the times. Basically formed by art students who loved punk and Bowie in equal measure, Bauhaus was a ship with the perfect crew: the innovative Daniel Ash screaming guitar licks over the tribal rumble of the Haskins brothers, David J. and Kevin. And then there was Peter Murphy: an emaciated cross-dressing ghoul who twisted and writhed across the stage. His angular good looks and lunatic mannerisms swept those who saw them into the Love 'Em and Hate 'Em camps. I plant my flag in the former, and this album contains every reason why. While their first album is a ravaging classic that defined their unique sound and B&W 1920's aesthetic, "Mask" boasts some of their best tunes. "Hollow Hills", inspired by an Arthur Machen story that cautions those who would tamper with prehistoric sites and their invisible occupants, is Bauhaus at their most atmospheric and poetic. "Dancing" and "Of Lillies and Remains" (the first dealing with all the places one can dance, the second some kind of surreal snippet about ghosts, weird fluids leaking out of orifices, and someone named Clancy) show that the boys had an incredible sense of the absurd, "Muscle In Plastic" is a primal workout, "Hair of the Dog" is a grinding opener with a fantastically creative guitar line, and "The Passion of Lovers" is a Spanish-ish ode to lovers and their pursuit- death in each others arms. "In Fear of Fear" (like "Dancing") actually features Daniel Ash on saxophone, "Man with the X-Ray Eyes" slams forward like a rugby team of Neanderthals, and the title track is eerie and glorious (check out the video for it, if you can find "Shadow of Light"- nowhere is the band's horror movie sensibility more evident). The bonus tracks are interesting, especially the one in which Peter relates an unusual way of making fish cakes- stuffing the creatures with potatoes before smashing them up! Basically, this album shows that Bauhaus was a group of talented, creative guys that all shared a morbid sense of humor, a passion for the bizarre, but were in no way a contrived bunch of goth types. Those came later. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Gem
Funny how we look around for entertainment. How I found this set(s) or why is a mystery. Perhaps to find a song that I once loved and wanted to hear again. Can't tell you how many copies I have of Tainted Love. What I crave from CD'ssuch as this one is that long lost song. You know..... the one you heard only for a second or a minute; a note, a word, a statement. I have found them in this set and the like. Not the top-40 stuff from the US radio. Not the little snippets. Nice to have the full length again. Tracks that you knew and danced to. Music the rest of the world knows and loves. As said, if I find one track thats new (to me) or perhaps I loved from one listen here; well worth the price ten fold. Remember, it was the 80's, no XM Radio or One Word Search. One once waited to hear the title or if lucky on MTV with the info.Still learning about the good stuff I missed! Some here and others are duds. Do buy if you know and love the 80's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vinyl, Wax and Plastic!
According to a British study of music buying trends during the mid 1980s, 12 inch singles were mostly bought up by boys who didn't want to fork the money for an album when they could have countless mixes of the same song!I am afraid I fell into that category.I loved my 12inchers...great mixes, cool covers and bsides... brilliant!

5-0 out of 5 stars Some Kind of Wonderful, yep, can't put it any better.
'Bout bloody time this one saw the light of day again. The lead off, "I Go Crazy" was in the flipped gender version of Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, whose story they comparably got right (Mary Stuart Masterson got Eric Stoltz instead of Lea Thompson).Snag that bad boy (soundtrack and film) along with this one due to "Postcards From Paradise," otherwise you suck.
5-0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU!!!!
Okay, wow! I have been waiting YEARS for this to be reissued. This has got to be one of the BEST albums from the '80s!! "Postcards From Paradise" was the soundtrack to my senior year of high school. Even the lesser known songs "Sleeping Dogs", "Crash" and "Lucky Day" are amazing! And the bonus tracks *bows to Superfecta* I'm just amazed I actually have this. ... Read more

The Living In Oblivion series of CD compilations does something that many similar compilations do NOT do: they give us some great variety of "hits".

4-0 out of 5 stars Great live show from the best Cure line-up
This is a great live album, with an exceptional sound quality.
5-0 out of 5 stars The editor's review is BS
I think including songs like The Love Cats, or any older Cure, would have ruined the melancholy mood of this concert completely.Obviously he's one of those "you're not a real fan unless you like their old stuff" kinda guys.Well I think the Cure did their best work from Head On the Door through Wish.I mean, their old stuff is awesome too, but in a different way.I've been a long time Cure fan, and Wish is my favorite album, and since this concert took place shortly after Wish was released, you could only expect them to focus mainly on those songs. Wish's lyrics are amazing if you've ever bothered to really read through them, so how can you criticize songs like From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Cut or End?They're great songs. In fact, I think the song that could have been cut from here was Friday I'm In Love; I've just never been a fan. Replace that with Apart and it's a perfect concert. The biggest improvement is in A Night Like This---the guitar solo instead of the sax solo makes it a whole new song.If you're like me andWish and Disintegration are your favorite Cure albums, you owe it to yourself to check out this live performance, it rocks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah..Man..
Siouxsie SIoux..We salute..I danced so hard.."Hong Kong Garden"..Early Siouxsie was this..Raw crunchy guitars that spoke with her idealistic lyrics..Disco in "Israel"..Siouxsie was beautiful then and now..Artsy and new wave in "Christine", and "Arabian Nights" the first of these songs being an artful part punk part new wave mish mash.."Tinderbox" is the other album that shines..Be 17 again..Go buy "Once Upon A Time" and get the history and the attitude of youth that keep our world alive..Hey Rick and Colleen remember me? Let's start a punk band..

5-0 out of 5 stars Siouxsie Sioux - Queen of Artsy Goth
I have loved Siouxsie & the Banshees since my introduction in junior high school.I'm mid-30's now and this album is still incredibly beautiful, artsy and romantically gothic at the same time. Siouxsie has such an amazing voice - and the Banshees are an incredibly tight band. Budgie is a terrific drummer.Listen to "Christine" and "Israel" and become spellbound. If you love The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Joy Division, Mission UK - then give the Queen of Goth a shot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Siouxsie&The Banshees-'Once Upon A Time:The Singles'(Geffen)
Essential for any and all Siouxsie&The Banshees fans.Sure,it's an early compilation, with material from 1978-81.Every one of the CD's ten cuts are a winner, like "The Staircase Mystery","Love In A Void",the insanely written "Happy House","Christine","Isreal","Spellbound"(one of my all time favorites)and "Arabian Knights".Top rate goth alternative. It's nearly impossible not to like at least a couple of these tunes.Sounds just SO good, that it almost hurts.Voodoo enthusiasts, fortune tellers and goth queens, rejoice!Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gothic Americana Music - Haunting and Spiritual
Sixteen Horsepower is an amazing blend of Alternative Rock, Americana, Goth, and Punk. This band from Denver combines vocals that are part goth, part punk, and part Cold Mountain-like Americana with tripy strings, anthem-like drums, a haunting piano, and a whole host of traditional instrumentations. The entire mix is a riveting experience is in the category I call Gothic Americana.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Bleak Masterpiece
16 Horsepower are a tragically overlooked band, fronted by the eccentric yet undoubtedly talented David Eugene Edwards (also of Woven Hand). The band play a dark, brooding style of country music. If you see the word 'country' and are instantly thinking of hillbilly music and cowboys, 16 Horsepower will completely change that notion. The subject is dark - man's sins and downfall, societies lack of faith, wallowing in a world of superficial possessions... all engulfed in harrowing soundscapes of `eerie' banjos and a rather pounding low-end. This is not for the faint of heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly amazing
My husband ran across this album sifting through some mp3s and insisted that I listen to it. Usually he's not that adamant, so I figured he must have found something pretty good. Pretty good is an understatement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not punk, but still enjoyable
I you're used to the original punk Damned music you might be disappointed, but if you are willing to listen to something a little gothier and can still enjoy Dave Vanian's gorgeous voice you might want to check this one out.It is a slow, melodic, very full-bodied musical album with a little gothier tone than the orginal Damned. But at the same token, I don't find this album a downer or too slow to enjoy. It is best listened to as back-ground music. As with most Damend albums, the lyrics are a little annoyingly shallow and silly (so don't listen too hard), but Dave still sounds great and the music is well put together, like always.I am a pretty big early punk fan, but I still enjoy this album, although it's not for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goth done...who knows?
So, they would save the ultimate cheesetasticalness for Anything, which even the most devoted Damned fan probably couldn't sit throught without cringing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing Compilation
For fans of the spell-like quality of medieval rock and shoegazing/dreampop, 12 Tales is a rare little must-own. It's probably my favorite compilation CD ever made. It initially attracted me by the cover art (I'm a huge Amy Brown fan) and then pulled me in by the track list--Rasputina, Cranes, Violet Indiana, and Miranda Sex Garden all on the same album? Sweet!I was immediately made a fan of the lesser-known artists on 12 Tales, such as The Flir, Bitstream Dream, Future Bible Heroes, and Livid Kittens. A booklet insert is a neat little feature, as mini-story and a piece of Amy Brown's fairy art accompany every track listing.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this album
One word, terrible. I asked for Nosferatu's Rise (awesome) for christmas and my mom saw this album under the "users who bought this album also bought" category. Save yourself the agravation and pass this one. I feel like Ive been robbed because I put the time into listening to it. There are only two good songs on the album and one of them is all but ruined due to shabby recording quality. The rest either are ruined due to the recording quality, or have terrible lyrics and crappy music, or usualy both. Hunter's kiss is sung in the first person from the perspective of a deer that has just been shot. Stupid stupid stupid. If you want an album like this except better in every way buy the soundtrack to the Witchblade comics. You won't miss out on anything if you dont read them as I dont and still thought it was awesome. Common, Peter Steele is on it.

3-0 out of 5 stars ugh! too many filler songs from goth bands I don't know
Eeew! Where's bands like Bauhaus, Collide, or Hungry Lucy? Almost every band on this compliation I've never heard of, and 87% of them suck terribly. The only songs that did anything for my gothy side were the tracks from Bitstream Dream, The Creatures, and Russel Mills & Undark. All the rest are absoluty horrid and just aren't good songs at all. I'd pay the 7 dollars for just Bitstream Dream's trace-inducing 'Impossible Gardens' song. At least the packaging and artwork is interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection of B-Sides
From the saturnine appearance of Robert Smith it looks like he's spent the better part of his career wallowing in self pity with very little time to put out a prodigious library of music.Maybe he is depressed but he isn't lazy. His work ethic is clearly shown on this dazzling collection of musical pulchritude.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive.
An exhaustive overview of pretty much all b-sides and rarities by the Cure during their tenure on Fiction Records (1978-2001), "Join the Dots" is a critical collection for fans.Around five hours of rare Cure music is contained within the four CDs of the set, and while some of the material left out can be annoying (more on that in a minute), this is a superb resource for any of us who try and gather the entire output of a band.
3-0 out of 5 stars Go to Napster and buy the whole thing for $10
I really really love this album. With that said, you must be wondering why I'm giving it 3 stars. Well ... the entire first disc of b-sides is amazing, while the other 3 quickly dive from "ho-hum" to the point where you're scrapping the barrel for good tracks.

2-0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 stars-- not quite as bad as its reputation.
Generally reviled as the worst album that the Cult ever recorded (although that title is often times-- unfairly-- reserved for its followup), "Ceremony" is one of those records that, while not really fantatic, is perhaps not quite as bad as initially perceived. The band, now reduced to vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy with studio musicians as a supporting cast, entered the studio to record a followup on top of "Electric" and "Sonic Temple" and while "Sonic Temple" was driven by Duffy, this one was driven by Astbury, who has a long-standing concern for the plight of Native Americans, and the album appears to be a chance to exorcise some of those feelings.

Siouxsie & the Banshees are quite possibly the only first-generation "punk" band to last long enough to have hit collections that chronicle three decades. Though initially inspired by the Sex Pistols, the Banshees were always more about arty romanticism than street aggression. This second collection of hits begins in 1982, after their first flash of fame and creativity had concluded. These tunes then represent the Banshees' attempt at adapting to the difficult musical landscape of the 1980s. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection
Siouxsie and the Banshees were truly a great band. In fact, they are my favorite band of all time. This magnificent collection shows how great they truly were by showing their most popular singles, including their biggest hit here in the U.S., "Kiss Them For Me". Here are my top 5 favorite Banshees songs of all time, in order from 5-1.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of my most influential albums of all time
Of all the albums, cassettes, compact discs that I have owned and loved over the years, one of my top five personal favorite cds of all time is Siouxsie & The Banshees' "Twice Upon a Time: the Singles". I was a freshman in college when I discovered Siouxsie & The Banshees over a decade ago. This was my earliest exposure to goth music. Little did I know was just how big of an impact the tape version of this greatest hits collection would have on me. I was having a horrible time during my freshman year in college. I felt like an outcast and Siouxsie's music came at the perfect time. I was drawn in by the melancholy lyrics and evocative music. I now own this collection on cd and the music still sounds fresh to me. No matter how many times I have listened to it, I still love "Cities in Dust", my favorite Siouxsie song of all time. Gotta love the band's interpretation of The Beatles' "Dear Prudence". All of the songs on the cd is timeless. The production on the cd could use a remastering job but other than that, I love this cd. It is a great representation of the band during the '80s.

4-0 out of 5 stars good compilation of material 1982 and on
I personally think they hit their peak with Kaleidoscope and Juju.A newcomer should first get Once Upon a Time, then go for The Scream, Kaleidoscope, and Juju. Those albums are great.Their later albums all had good stuff (OK, I don't know the last couple - the last one I have is Tinderbox), but they are spotty.A Kiss in the Dreamhouse is very good, but it's out of print!!!!MOST (not all of course) of the best songs from this period are on this CD.Yes, there are omissions, but that's how compilations are! This also has a couple of non-album singles (as does Once Upon a Time). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Faith-A Hauntingly Beautiful Record
Faith, As I see it, is the point where "goth" rock lost all of its Violence and Raw agression,(I.E Joy Division, Bauhaus, etc.) and became something of a more, well, lyrically stimulating and Musically haunting genre. The Cure had progressed from post-punk masters to Goth Rock visionaries, and the visions represented here, as mentioned in the title of the record, are of the abscence, or loss of faith. I've always interpreted the record as Robert Smith's search for something to believe in, A faith in something that can comfort him, but to no avail. Stunning in it's sheer simplicity Musically, but ability to be as dense as they would ever be (Disintegration, Wish, etc.). The opening track, "The Holy Hour" is one of disturbing qualities lyrically; "I live/ A vow of Silence/ As one by one the People Slip away", and lets you know that the direction of the record will be just as bleak and depressing as their follow up, "pornograughy." The second track, "Primary", is as poppy as the band would get on this record, and by the time it shifts into "other voices" all aspects of this Pop-oreintation are lost completely. Heavily Reverbarated more and more as the record progresses, "all Cats Are Gray" takes the desolation to a point where their is some sense of hope, but those thoughts are lost upon the opening of "Funeral Party". Now, Funeral party can be looked at from many different perspectives, but in my perspective, it is simply Loss. Loss of a family member, A Lover, anything like that. It is my favorite Cure song in it's Beauty, and in it's lush, lush sadness. The Cure wouldn't attain these values of Ache-ing sadness again until Disintegration. We then have "doubt", the fast-paced tale of Love gone wrong, and then the listener is dropped into the winter-laiden depression of "The Drowning Man." Another beautiful track, it contains disturbing imagery much like "one Hundred Years", and, although deceptively misleading, it had potential to reach even more disturbing heights than the work of pornograughy had. Finally, "faith" arises from the ashes of "The Drowning man", and by doing so, ends the album on the lowest note possible. Despite what many Cure Fans think, Particularly that "Pornograughy" is the bands best album, I Declare "Faith" not only my favorite, but their best, Not only Lyrically, But Musically as well. It may not have had Chart Topping material, and the Catchiness that "Kiss Me" and "Disintigration would have, but in it's doom-laiden Dispondency, it retains some of the most dark, gloomiest, and, (Yes) beautiful music ever captured on Recording.
5-0 out of 5 stars Faith, Seventeen Seconds and Pornography are the REAL Trilogy
Faith, Seventeen Seconds and Pornography were - by far- the best Cure albums, although the ones proceeding them were very good too.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good goth/rock album
Like most The Cure albums, this is a good gothic rock album. Most The Cure albums I rank 3 stars, but Pornography is definitely 5 stars. The distance between this album and its follow-up is hundreds of miles, Pornography was once in a lifetime. Faith has a far less heavy sound, more laidback and mellow. Some good songs are Funeral Party and All Cats Are Grey, though no song really sucks or really stands out. All in all a "pleasant" album, I listen to it regularly. Just doesn't grab me as deep as I am sure it does many other people. Good album though. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Please Don't Use Records as Therapy
I'm a big fan of The Cure. They have made a lot of great records, but I'm sorry to some of the other reviewers, I didn't think this was one of them. It starts out with a hopeless rant about being lost(no real music involved) that is funny the first time, but hardly enjoyable to listen to a second time. The album then at least attempts to be musical. Unfortunately the songs are just drab and mediocre. Mr. Smith seems to have used the process of writing and recording these songs as some kind of self therapy. I really don't care about some horrible breakup with a woman he insists on telling me about in detail.
3-0 out of 5 stars Another decent, but not spectacular record by the Cure.
The first album after the Cure's "last album ever" (hmm...) and wrapped in a charming cover drawn by Robert Smith's nieces and nephews, the Cure's self-titled album is, quite honestly, business as usual-- all of it is reasonably listenable, it adds a new spin on some things and retreads some old, favorite ground, and all in all is a decent album. But it seems like since "Wild Mood Swings" and the negative reception it received, Smith and co. seem a bit hesitent to pursue any truly different directions, and in its way, "The Cure" represents some of that stagnation.
4-0 out of 5 stars It grows on you!
When I first listened to this album I wasn't bowled over or particularly impressed. A lot of the songs (like Lost)just seemed to drone on annoyingly and not really go anywhere. The only one felt was any good was the single (The End of the World). I listened to the album once and didn't listen to it for a while.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheesy, corny Gothic-wanna be
Midnight Syndicate wants to be a lot, I guess. It wants to be dark and scary, but they're more like a graphic vampie novel, you can admire the technique but you don't really get involved. The images they produce remain a bit plastic, static, with an overdose of well-known themes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice and Creepy just like I like it!!Goth music at its best
Reminds me of the music in the movie Interview with the Vampire, creepy, scary, GREAT, what any goth chic like me needs!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Safe with me
Diva Destruction is easily my favorite modern goth band. I have been a fan for several years now. Four years after the release of her last cd, Diva Destruction (aka Debra Fogarty) returns with "Run Cold". I was not disappointed with "Run Cold". "Run Cold" clocks in just under fifty minutes which is fine with me. "Run Cold" begins with the excellent title track which has a killer dance groove. The song almost reminded me of "The Broken One" from DD's first album "Passion's Price".The same can be said about "Rewriting History" but it sounds more like "Enslaved" (also found on "Passion's Price"). What I have noticed about "Run Cold" is that the overall sound is a more electronic sound unlike its predecessors which had a more guitar orientated sound. Another aspect of the cd I love is the eerie and sinister sounds. "Electric Air" has such a terrific foreboding sound that would sound perfect in a horror film. I found it really hard to pick a favorite song off "Run Cold". All of the songs are great. The production is immaculate. You can hear Debra's vocals clearly. The four years was clearly well worth the wait for "Run Cold" for this Diva Destruction fan. ... Read more
