5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is my favorite volume of this compliation set. All of these are very good to me. But I'd definitely say to listen to this one last, as the others will probably be disappointing if you hear the best first. Great CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good price, fair music, one great rare remix
I had to ask Voltaire himself where to find the Heavy Drama mix of The Man Upstairs and he directed me here. The Heavy Drama mix is catchier and better suited for clubbing than his typical accoustic style.Just don't take him too seriously and you'll be okay.I'm just crazy like this, but I bought this collection for that one song.5-0 out of 5 stars These 2 CDs

5-0 out of 5 stars PERHAPS ONE OF THE FINEST ROCK ALBUMS EVER
THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE BEST ROCK ALBUMS EVER MADE. WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT I HAD MIXED REACTIONS IT WAS SO PROGRESSIVE, ESPECIALLY FOR A GOTH ALBUM, ANYWAY HALF A DOZEN LISTENINGS LATER I WAS HOOKED. OF ALL THE ALBUMS I POSSES, THIS IS THE ONE I LISTEN TO THE MOST, EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS IT GOES IN THE PLAYER, JUST SIT BACK CHILL AND ENJOY IT. IF YOU DON'T OWN IT, GET IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masters of sensation..
This is one of the last great rock-psychedelic albums of the 90's,(since nowdays there are no bands that perform such kind of music-you know the reasons-charts,commerciality,etc)and it can only be characterized as perfect. It is way ahead of it's time, and only true musical fans can appreciate it's value.Carl McCoy and his boys elevate our feeling,to a different reality.Outstanding vocal performance from one of the best singers in Goth scene(depth and mystery masks his voice)along with solid bass playing(which is the backbone,as it should be)keybords that only fill and they not exceed-and drums alike, and finally those guitars become so alive in some points which they make you believe that they are alive..Goths should be proud that such a band belongs in their family..Carl McCoy is a musical genious, not only because of Elizium but also about everything he had done so far..Enjoy..

5-0 out of 5 stars "if you were abandoned in a solitary island which cd.." THIS ONE, PERIOD!
without exaggeration, this cd was [ironically] an enlightment... it changed my musical views and tastes.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 Late: don't miss this gem
Favorite Cure pop song:
4-0 out of 5 stars "Disintegration" era single with cool B-sides
"Love Song" is a single that came from the popular 1989 Cure album "Disintegration."There are two versions of "Love Song" on this single, Remix (3:24) and Extended Remix (6:18).They both sound very similar, but one is longer.Of the two B-sides on this single, I like "2 Late" (2:38) the best.It is one of those high-energy "feel good" songs that might make you drive a little faster because you get caught up in the mood (but not speed, of course). Finally, "Fear of Ghosts" (6:50) has a slightly apathetic/gloomy mood to it.With nearly a 2.5 minute instrumental introduction, "Fear of Ghosts" is kind-of a weird song, but one that Cure fans may appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am sooooo happy to have found this!!!
I was flicking through the Cure racks at Best Buy of all places, and I came across ALL of the available rare 5 track albums at once! This one, Fascination Street, Pictures Of You and Sideshow. This one's my favorite because of those unbelievable B sides...I loved the longer remix of "Lovesong" as well. They could make that song three hours long and I'd be thrilled.Anyway, though, the real treats on this are those fabulous, fabulous B-sides, "2 late" and "fear of ghosts"."2 late" is a great, great pop song, but I really fell in love with "fear of ghosts".It's dark and haunting and beauuuuuutiful.I played that song over and over...buy this, and buy the others.Fascination Street is especially great. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excelent synth-pop music
This is a good synth-pop album. The overall style is not really "modern" (another bands like Alphaville and Depeche Mode had almost same kind of music at their begining), but as I can see, their musicstyle is very, very distinctive from any other band, specially for theleading vocal. My favorite song is "Tender days".

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Have a Miniature Secret Black Celebration
This is an excellent CD.Picture Depeche Mode with Peter Murphy on lead vocals.Admittedly, my introduction to this group was hearing "Once in a Lifetime" at a club off their most recent album.POPKILLER wasthe only one I could find.Even here in NYC, I only found one recordstore, Generation Records that had any of their CDs.The music isreminiscent of Murphy's early work on "If the World Should Fail toFall Apart" and "Love Hysteria."They also have DepecheMode's penchant for disturbing lyrics set to a dark but sometimes playfulsynthpop style. They've been around for a while but I think they're onlyjust coming into their own and may be a force to reckon with in the firstdecade of the year 2000.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great! but this band is hard to come by
I heard this band in a club in Gainesville and decided to check out one of their cds. This is the one I found and it is a great cd.It would be a good one to check out if you want to check this band out for the firsttime.I just wish this band's cds wouldn't be so hard to find. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Haunting Reflection on Love and Loss-Murphy Style
Being a huge fan of Mr. Murphy's work in any arrangement, (I do think he musically progressed after Bauhaus, however) I was a little wary of his follow up to his masterpiece "Deep".I heard that his inspiration was wraught out from the previous albumand that his new effort was forced and dull.
1-0 out of 5 stars Bummer.
I like Bauhaus a lot. I like Love & Rockets, Tones On Tail. I like Murphy's Love Hysteria and Deep.
5-0 out of 5 stars What album did some of you listen too, anyway?
While I cannot speak much about Bauhaus (what little I've heard is largely unappealing, except for "Ziggy"), I can and will defend this wonderful album!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another example of the creative genius of The Cure
If you are like me, you love Cure singles because they have great b-sides. The more Cure songs you have, the better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid B-sides
Alt.end is a fairly strong single, however I feel the featured B-sides, "Why Can't I Be Me," and "Your God is Fear" really belonged on the 2004 self-titled Cure album, again seeming to assert artistic-ad-marketing incompetance on the part of Geffen Records. I'd have preferred the two b-sides having been on the The Cure's eponymous album over a song like, "Us or Them" which I think nearly fringed on the creative lapse illustrative in "Just Say Yes".
4-0 out of 5 stars Once again, great B-sides!
Like the four other songs that didn't make the U.S. version of the new album, this single includes two non-album tracks that are better than most songs on the "The Cure". Goes to show you that the record company obviously exerted great influence on the band to release an album that never took REAL fans into account one iota. Via the singles or import albums, check out the other songs from these sessions (Going Nowhere, Truth Goodness and Beauty, This Morning and Fake) to see what I mean. All are Classic Cure: mid-tempo, melodic, and not out of place on anything from Disintegration to Wish to Bloodflowers. And NOT designed to sell albums to fans of fukking Interpol! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Classics
These are all good songs - classic! But I definitely don't like the change in rhythm in 'Close To Me'...Robert and his boys should've left it as it was.

4-0 out of 5 stars unplugged = fantastic
I really like the bonus unplugged CD.The band seems to have a lot of fun playing the music and the songs really stand on their own once stripped of the synth and production.Made me appreciate the Cure in a brand new way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Electric without electricity
One day, when our planet's oil supply is gone, we will sit around a campfire and remember how cool alternative music was. "Yeah man", they'll say, "all those cool sounds with electric keyboards, that was so cool. That's what made new wave great". The Cure has thrown down the guantlet ahead of that time along with their electric instuments and processors too. On their 2CD Greatest Hits compilation, the entire 2nd disc, while identical in song titles to the 1st disc, is completely unplugged. Instead of electric bass, they use bass guitar. Intstead of synths, they use everything from grand pianos, foot powered pump organs, accordians, and even thumb pianos. Even Robert Smith's trademark voice is au naturale, no fake back up vocals or overdubs. Amazingly, it sounds just as alive as ever. They could play these songs around the campfire and still have the electricity as if they were plugged in. As for the song selection, people will gripe about having two new extra songs where they could have included some old ones (where's Demolition Street, Pictures Of You or Catch?), but the vast majority of songs are hits that Cure fans have long known. This limited edition is a set that succeeds and I think worth shelling out the extra cash. So it's your choice, electric or unplugged, but you can't go wrong either way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Someone is dancing on my grave...
After the release of their gothic metal classic Enter, Within Temptation decided to put out an intermission CD for their ever-hungry fans.Consisting of 3 new tracks, 2 remixes, and bonus enhanced material, I'm going to say any fan of WT should try to get their hands on this, especially for the new songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Where it all began............
Some 6-7 years ago I was napstering around and found out (cant remember exactly how) about the songs in this EP.I was really pleased/amazed/thrilled by this lovely voice.... Being a ToT fan (dropped being a fan after musique though) I really enjoyed the melodies, growlings, music, and definately this sweet voice.... I would advise to get this one to understand the complete evolution of one of the best dark/gothic/doom bands available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful And Gorgeous Metal Grandeur
An EP by Within Temptation carries more substance within it than most bands's full-length albums; "The Dance" is a deep and lush mini-album that fuses the epic feel and invigorating nature of power metal, the massive grandeur of symphonic doom metal a la Morgion or Orphanage, and the rich beauty of atmospheric metal like Nightsky Bequest and The Gathering. Some have complained that some of the elements used - the choir effects, the alternating female and male vocals, etc. have been used a lot in recent years.I'd respectfully counter that elements like guitar solos and drums have been used a lot for decades and decades; the fact remains that having them doesn't automatically make a band unoriginal.Within Temptation is one of the freshest and most original bands to emerge in the last decade; there are no sound-alikes to the group that I know of.The closest comparison to the material on "The Dance" might be The Gathering with their awesome "Mandylion" and "Nighttime Birds" albums, but the two sounds are only about as close a reference point as, say, Judas Priest to Iron Maiden to Accept - similar in ways but certainly not clones.

Editorial Review

It's often been bemoaned that the Birthday Party, Nick Cave's postpunk outfit, never managed to capture on record the confrontational frenzy of their live performances. These four sessions, recorded for the John Peel radio show between September 1980 and November 1982, arguably form the most accurate portrayal of the band ever released, as they were under severe time constraints on each occasion. The 16 tracks survey their finest work--"She's Hit," "Big Jesus Trash Can," "King Ink"--all with simple, portentous bass lines and Rowland Howard's vicious stabs of reverberating guitar. The juddering rockabilly of "Release the Bats" (which, much to Cave's disgust, became an anthem for Goths worldwide) is also featured, along with the seldom heard "Marry Me (Lie! Lie!)" and a churning cover of the Stooges' "Loose." As the tracks (and the years) pass, one can see Cave's progression toward writing somber murder ballads, such as "Deep in the Woods." And there is undeniable evidence that he was a tremendously funny man from the start: "Even my dog kicks me!" he howls during "Figure of Fun." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars yet another 5-star Nick Cave recording
The more that I listen to Nick Cave, the more I strain my imagination as to any other musician who can touch him. No one else rocks so hard.I ran across this CD in a used bin today and have listened to it three times already. "Blistering" is the word for this one. One observation: I swear I hear influences of the Captain's Trout Mask Replica....which is by no means a bad thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars About time this came out...
The first release I heard by the Birthday Party was actually their Peel EP (the old ones with the grey cover) that I picked up while in high school years ago. I really dug it -- at the time, it was possibly the most horrifying thing I'd ever heard -- and I really enjoyed tracks like "Sometimes Pleasure Heads Must Burn," probably my favorite BP song. Anyway, this Peel session brings the EP back, along with a lot of other material. Generally, Peel sessions don't disappoint, and neither does this. Play it loud for someone you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Fun Party
It's simply another album of collected songs from the greatest band in the 80's or any time before it, The Birthday Party. And so, simply put, it's an album of fantastic quality and electrifying fun from Nick Cave and his group of rebel musicians that will get your blood bumping and jumping if you are a fan of old, rough and original rock from the creators of such masterpieces as Dead Joe, The Six Strings that Drew Blood, and Sonny's Buring. This album is the greatest collection of The Birthday Party's songs yet to be released. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of It's Scene
Disreguard L Salisbury's review. It isn't helpfull in the least because the review is completely false.First off, the female vocalist sounds nothing like Kate Bush and second, Tristania has never been a death metal band.Leave that to the likes of Nile, Cryptopsy, Soilent Green and Necrophagist.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best album I own.
The first songs I heard from Tristania were from Beyond the Veil album. Later I bought Widow's Weeds, and I must admit, that altough both albums have their own distinct style I still prefer Widow's Weeds more. Maybe it's because of the melancholy dark romantic theme or songwriting, maybe it's the peaceful sound.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent cd...
I really loved this cd.It is extremely beautiful vocally, and the sound is very romantic.I'm a huge Cradle of Filth fan, and then cd is still very gothic-sounding, but waay softer.Perfect for indulging my softer side.Soaring operatic female vocals and growls from the male vocalists make this cd a perfect balance. My only complaint is that it is a bit short, clocking about 50 minutes, and i really wish it was at least a full hour.Anyway, i seriously recommend this. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My favorite single from the "Disintegration" album era
The single for Cure's "Fascination Street" has two versions of the song: Remix (4:17) and Extended Remix (8:48).Both of these sound pretty much the same, but one is longer. We are also treated with two B-side tracks."Babble" (4:16) is a speedy, chipper little tune.Overall, it is a simple song, but will be a treat for any Cure fan."Out of Mind" (3:51) has a slightly different sound to it than other songs from the "Disintegration" album era, but probably is good enough to have been included as part of the album. After a 1.5 minute instrumental introduction, we have another chipper, fast-pace song with pretty simple repeating lyrics. The re-mixes of "Fascination Street" are nice, but the two B-sides are what make this single worth getting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great B-Side
Much like the "Lovesong" CD-Single, you will find not only a stirring version of "Fascination Street," but a really cool B-Side."Out of Mind" is a song that should be on the "Wish" album, which is why it may not have made it onto the more melancholy "Disintegration" CD.It's a great song (reminds of "Open" on "Wish") and makes this worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars last of the good cure
i bought this single when it came out in 1990, when i was 12 years old and already an avid cure fan.all the singles from the disintegration albumn were great, good old-fashioned cure.'babble' and 'out of mind' are good tracks, like most of their b-sides.makes me sad for the old days. ... Read more

I, for one, am not big on any type of background music (or, in their case, cinematic) but Midnight Syndicate is a proud exception for they certainly know how to create good atmospheric Goth music that's gloomy and foreboding. The dark moods (tortured wind blowing, distant bells ringing, mournful singing full of sorrow, ect.), eerie dialogue and haunting orchestrations (the dirge of an organ playing especially gives me the chills) are a perfect companion to a spine-tingling horror novel, a spooky video game or a ghostly house on Halloween. Just don't play this around kids as it might give you, I mean them, nightmares. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Xymox's greatest work
I bought this album on vinyl the day it came out in the fall of 1986 (along with PURITY by THE ESSENCE!) and from the moment I put it on, I was enchanted.I had their first album and NO HUMAN CAN DROWN was blasting through my cassette walkman every day but this album supassed everything else I had heard from any other band and still does! The 84-89 lineup of Xymox were very talented individuals.Ronny Moorings(the only origianl member left today and the singer/ guitarist), Pieter Nooten-keys, and Anke Wolbert-bassblended big strings, eerie choir, synths, guitar and drum machine in a way that cannot be matched.BTW, if you like the ambient side of Xymox, PLEASE check out the Pieter Nooten/Michael Brook album SLEEPS WITH THE FISHES.There are a few Xymox songs on it and it is very close in mood to Medusa, almost like an instrumental expansion and an excellent soundscape fore a rainy or dark and cold day.Back to Medusa.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent album
An excellent album, and a great novilty in 1986.its a great mix of very mellow, atmospheric tracks, and more upbeat electronica ones (what the sisters would like to have done but didn't). For me Michelle and Back Door are the best tracks. It is also just worth a listen for the slightly bizarre track Theme II with the woman screaming (or shrieking it's hard to describe), but completely in tune. Very strange.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Escape
I can honestly say that I have never heard more beautiful and sensual music. I feel like I am on another planet when I listen to Xymox, especially to their album 'Medusa'. You must at least take time to listen to any music samples! You'll be hooked fast! ... Read more

I first heard "No New Tale to Tell" on the radio.I was driving past the beach when it came on, and it blew me away.It is still one of my favorite songs and, oddly, still reminds me of driving past a beach.Go figure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the best L&R record
I bought this when it was originally released and I still listen to it today.I realized what a great record this was when on several occasions, when I was listening to it at my job the time (I worked at a Radio Shack in Akron, Ohio) I had someone ask me who it was and they wrote it down because they wanted to go buy it.I found the lyrics on this album the most personal of any L&R record.Although they went on to more comercial success with their self titled "Love and Rockets" release, I think this album stands the test of time as their strongest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their Best!
While many claim that Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven is the best Love and Rockets album, Earth Sun and Moon is the REAL best recording by the band. This album took Love And Rockets a bit away from the meandering psychedelic-goth fest of their two previous albums and brought in a more pop, which made this work so exciting to listen to (and I HATE pop!).The acoustic guitars dominate, and the production brings them out to the forefront even stronger than on previous albums. The songwriting is additionally much better. No "New Tale To Tell" is a classic alternative guitar rock staple, while "Waiting For The Flood" is as great a ballad as "All In My Mind" from EXPRESS, but much more captivating."Mirror People" and "Lazy" are riff-roaring guitar and bass workouts, while Daniel Ash's sax playing on many songs is beautifully imperfect and dirty."Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" is a solemn work backed with minimal instrumentation to wonderful effect. The remaining tracks are just as excellent in quality and songcraft. While the follow up to this album spawned the big hit "So Alive" and an equally satisfying self-titled album, Love And Rockets took many years to get this energy back into their music with LIFT, but by trading in the acoustic guitars for our modern age of techno-styled Alternative rock. Most interesting is that about the same time this album came out, the Bubblemen (who's artwork is scribbled all over the liner notes), a very strange alter-ego project, invaded. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My New Favorite Band
Wolfsheim is one of my new favorites. I've been a devoted 80's synth and new wave fan for years and years. I was just thrilled out of my mind when I discovered these newer synth bands (although technically Wolfsheim has been around since the 80's). Wolfsheim's music is original, heart-felt, catchy and the music won't get out of my head! The lead singer has a unique and amazing voice and the lyrics are so passionate and meaningful. This CD has a lot of great stuff, and some less than great stuff. I would first recommend their two recent albums "Spectators" and "Casting Shadows", which are flawless, in my opinion. If you find you can't get enough of these guys, then I would buy this CD. The reason I give it four stars is because their sound wasn't quite as developed. The songs aren't quite as catchy or polished as their newer albums. But after a few listens, the songs do begin to grow on you. Another bonus to buying this CD is the booklet, which has lots of great pictures of the band. So if you're just getting into Wolfsheim, I would make this purchase number three.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites
I wrote a review of this CD a while ago. I don't see it anymore, so I'm writing another. I have had this CD for six years and it is still one of my favorites. In the vast wasteland that is pop music this is a poignant alternative to Britney Spears and violent rap. The lyrics are thoughtful and insightful. Every time I put it away for a few months and come back to it, it sounds as fresh as the day I first heard it. I am so happy to see Amazon is beginning to have all of their music avaliable. I used to have to look long and hard for it.I cannot overemphasize how deeply I appreciate this music. I strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wolfsheim: A Vice Worth Sporting
I've listened to lots of music from both far and wide, taking in both imports and US bands of all genres, and I've had trouble topping what I've found within the voice touted here. I'm not sure what it is exactly, what place that those words seem to wrap around and to seep into, but while walking that valley of words I sometimes find myself filled with tears and sometimes I find myself smiling. With that in mind I can say that Wolfsheim is quite possibly one of the best bands I've ever had the privilege of listening to, with them understanding what it means to make masterpieces out of what others oftentimes overlook. They go beyond the veil of simply making music, taking all their talent and making something that is, in a word, beautiful. Rarely can I say I've been moved by something enough to call it that, but some of the things they've recorded has evoked feelings that most songs cannot find. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as good as Sacrificed
I bought this album the day it came out and I have listened to it over the last two years. Well, I have to say that this album is not as appealing as Sacrificed, which had more of an organic sound to it with the guitars and beats and such. To me Damaged is almost too techno for me. I loved Razed In Black for the heavy guitars, the angry vocals, and the dark evil lyrics. Damaged is more tame in terms of the music style it portrays, even the guitars sound like a keyboard effect, and there is very few on here. He definitley sings more on this release and is way more melodic, and mellow and dare I say...more accessible. But I'm not mad that the album is this way. Romell is a D.J. above all and his first love is obviously electronica, which makes this albums programming stellar. The only reason that I am disappointed in the end is that I wanted another heavy album and this album is not heavy, unless you count the non-stop bass drum. Even Shrieks, Laments, and Anguished Cries is better than Damaged, and I think that album was pretty boring too. I am not a fan of straight up techno, which is what most of this album is, so it will collect more dust than all my other cds thats for sure. Stick with Sacrificed...its flawless and the only one you need. Remember, this is just a personal opinion....if you like techno I do totally recommend this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Razed the Roof
RiB was a welcome discovery for me. I was trying to find something less like NIN and the other (what I call) "pop" industrial groups out there. I wanted something faster, a little more dance-ish. RiB delivered.
5-0 out of 5 stars You must buy this album or i will kill you!
This album is fantastic. I would play this album over, and over again until its so old, i would make a hooker's fanny look unused. Anyhow its a must have album and if you don't buy this album, well, huh, you must have the I.Q. of a carrot!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat bored........
I adore Voltaire and his overly genius sense of humor.I first got hooked when I bought Devil's Bris and from there I had to have more. When I got Boo Hoo my admiration slowed. He droned on incessantly with a alot songs almost slipping me into a coma.I do however love his cover of Bjork's "Bachelorette" and Tori's "Caught a Lite Sneeze".Overall this CD for me is only good on bleak days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amusing at Points, not his best
This album has a few highlights on it, but generally is not as strong as Devil's Bris or Almost Human.I think of it as more of a transition album, because it holds some satirical songs like DB and AH, but also some downright silly ones like "BRAINS!" and "Vampire Club".And don't forget the Tori Amos cover of "Caught a Lite Sneeze".It's a bit shorter than the original, but I like Voltaire's version better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not his best, but a must have for the completest.
That being said, the worst of Voltaire's work easily makes a mockery of what passes for the best of today's music - processed talentless, thoughtless, crap. He's pure genius. Definitely check out his older work as well; it's the cream of his career, and you'll be addicted. ... Read more
