5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best comps
Not So Quiet on the Western Front is one of the best comps because it offers most of the best hardcore/punk from California and Nevada at the time. I definitly recommend this to anyone who is new to hardcore,Check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive NorCal Punk Compilation
This is it; this is the music that liberated thousands of my fellow Northern Californians. There's some truly kick-ass $hit on here. And while the styles range tremendously, every song on this album is good. And then some are GREAT, like "Pay Salvation" by Los Olvidados or "Breakout" by UXB. If you like Maximum Rock and Roll, you will love this album! This is a monument to nonconformity and I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Sleater-Kinney's musical manifesto is a wake-up call to not only the old boy network, but to young women who find themselves increasingly at odds with it. Helmed by Corin Tucker (Heaven's To Betsy) and Carrie Brownstein (Excuse 17), this trio is not only furious and formidable, but genuinely significant. On a musical landscape populated by open sewers like The 7 Mary Bush Pilots Idiot-Grunge Revival or Hootie's Home for the Terminally Bland and Sensitive, Tucker's spine-shivering voice shrieking "I wanna be your Joey Ramone / Pictures of me on your bedroom door" cracks through the narcotic haze of mediocrity like a rat tail on a bare bottom. When she declares herself "The Queen of Rock & Roll," I'm inclined to smile and think "If only." Cultural importance aside, this rocks. Their eerily dead-on Sonic Youth snippet in "I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone" had me checking the credits for a Kim Gordon cameo, while "Little Mouth," "Stay Where You Are" and the incendiary title track are some of the most raging chunks of punk found around these parts since Greg Sage shook the rain off his rubbers. More than recommended: required. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars By any measure, a flat out musical masterpiece
Sleater-Kinney is a band I can only talk about using superlatives.Easily the best all-female band in the history of rock.In my opinion the best rock band of the past decade based on actual output (I defy anyone to name a band that has produced six albums as great as Sleater-Kinney has in the past ten years; Belle and Sebastian can come close, but too much of their work of the past five years has been uneven). They were originally viewed as the best of the second wave of riot grrrl bands, but I think that has obscured just how extraordinary this band is.Our society tends to marginalize too many women artists and performers by relegating them to "Female" status, much as I did in the second sentence of this review.Mind you, they are the greatest female rock band ever, but there is a sense in which that helps obscure just how great they are.Radiohead is a great band, but their output from 1996 to the present is not nearly as impressive as Sleater-Kinney's.
5-0 out of 5 stars the sound of a great band coming into its own
S-K's first album has one great song ("Slow Song") but Call the Doctor is the one where you hear them separating themselves from the rest of the riot grrrl pack. It was here that their lyrics began to move beyond the valid yet cliche sloganeering of their Olympia peers. But they certainly didn't become "apolitical," as some of the more simple-minded have said. In fact, "Call the Doctor" is a wonderful song about the medicalization of power and discourses of normalization that would have made Foucault jealous for its analytic depth. Ditto with "Little Mouth" and "Anonymous." I'll take Sleater-Kinney over a Judith Butler lecture any day of the week. The major highlight is Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker shrieking together on "I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone," the title of which brilliantly captures their long-running ambivalence about whether they want to be included in the great rock music canon's stairway to heaven or whether they want to destroy the canon altogether because the rules of inclusion are slanted against women rockers to begin with. Either way, this album established Corin and Carrie as the greatest punk rock songwriting team since Joe Strummer and Mick Jones. Oh, and I love love love the song "Good Things"! "Some things you lose/ some things you give away"... Good work ladies.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone
Let me first make a point by saying that I agree with the reviewer that said this was their critical breakthrough album."I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone" is the standout here like most people say, but this album is more than that."Call The Doctor", "Anonymous" and "Taking Me Home" are indie rock anthems that will go down in history.I'm sorry, but I just don't care for "Little Mouth"."Good Things" is my favorite song on the album because I can easily relate to it when me and my girlfriend were going through hard times.Do yourself a favor and buy this. You won't be disappointed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Campers Were Never Better
Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart catches the Campers at the height of their powers. The tension between David Lowery's country-rock nihilism and the rest of the band's art-folk nihilism is in perfect balance here, one album before that tension ultimately drove the band apart. They ambitiously weave heavy-metal-style power-guitar solos with precision mandolin work, politics with traditional folk, and even slyly sample Michael Stipe in concert as "She Divines Water" deconstructs itself before its coda. Not their most accessible work--Key Lime Pie would fit that bill--but for the connoisseur of quirky 1980s pop, this is one of the finest works of the decade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless
Camper Van Beethoven were quite a revelation to many in their day. They were a college alternative band who appealed to those who grew up listening to classic rock but were a little disenchanted with the eighties sound (ie MTV, drum machines, lack of tempo changes, and say..heavy metal). In my opinion, Camper was second to only REM as far as offering anything interesting as a new band to discover. This album, along with Key Lime Pie, are their two finest, combing excellent songwriting with a more honed-in production. All of the band's prior work was excellent as well; it offered more experimental songs using many different instuments and styles accompied by a humorous and satirical outlook. The last two albums, however, prove to be an admirable progression for the band. One should not try to "figure out" Camper's music all at once, but should give it several tries. The music has not aged one bit over the years, and it is heartening to see these recordings re-released. Camper deserves a place as a cult band available for many to discover down the line.

It was only a matter of time before the return of the sensitive singer-songwriter. However, the 1990s style requires that the introspection be broken up with a little tomfoolery. Sebadoh are masters of the game. Lou Barlow is the inquisitive and earnest leader who delivers the heartfelt "Not a Friend" and "Together or Alone" with all the hurt and pain he can fit on his sleeve. Jason Loewenstein is the guy with the captivating guitar line. Put together, they're something like Donny and Marie--one is a little bit sensitive, the other a little bit rock 'n' noise. And just to prove they're a democracy, they give drummer Bob Fay some with his lone composition, the surprisingly tuneful "Temptation Tide." Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sebadoh best
Please listen to this dark masterpiece, guitars flow so beautifully into Barlow's words, the sometimes Sub Pop grungy of III disappeared completely, instead we have an Sonic excursion. In my bedroom next to Dinosaur Jr's first three.

1994 was a good year. A very good year.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dirty
This is invariably the best Sebadoh album. It gives you all of the jagged, messed up guitar parts you could ever really need. You really have to love the erroneous discription given below: I am also dusting off my copy of Bakesale, having not listened to it in a long time, and I can assure you that there is nothing hi-fi about it. If you're not convinced, you only have to listen to the first two seconds of magnet's coil to realize: those are acoustic guitars being played through distortion. Nice. I just would have liked to see these guys before they split. Oh, well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strident grrl rock that makes no apologies for being catchy.
Let's skip the formalities; this album is amazing. If you like female rockers, vocal harmony, or catchy lyrics that also happen to make a statement, All Hands on the Bad One is for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Watch me make up my mind, instead of my face"
Out of all Sleater-Kinney's seven releases, All Hands On the Bad One probably stands out as being the most poppy. Yet while Sleater-Kinney can get poppy, they show they also can be political at the same time. The first song 'The Ballad of a Ladyman' explores the state the band is currently in, and their refusal to compromise their morals in order to fit into the mainstream. Feminist themes are present in this album, but Sleater-Kinney do not smack you in the face with them screaming their head off, unlike Kathleen Hanna. Rather, they present their ideas in a more clear and clever manner, allowing you to think. '#1 Must Have' bemoans the state of women's presence (both on and off the stage) in rock music, while 'Male Model' talks about society's idea that female musicians will never be equal to their male counterparts. 'The Professional' deals with the 'good ol boy' network that women (and also minorities) face in the workplace. 'Was It A Lie?' talks about how society's pleasure from women's pain, in one such example as a train accident (another example that comes to mind are rape porn movies). But don't think all of the album is serious and political. 'You're No Rock and Roll Fun' is a great fun pop song as is 'Milkshake n' Honey'. The only song I could do without is 'Leave You Behind' which strays too far from Sleater-Kinney's sound, and ends up sounding like a Veruca Salt song circa 'Eight Arms To Hold You'. 'The Swimmer' is an excellent close to the album, fragile, distant, and yearning. I must say, I was a little disappointed when I bought Sleater-Kinney's album 'Dig Me Out' but now that I got this one I was much more impressed. With bands like Hole, Bikini Kill, Babes In Toyland, and L7 gone, it is great to see an empowering female rock band left.

3-0 out of 5 stars RUN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THIS CD!
Alright here's the deal, I bought this cd with an open mind.I understand black sabbath switched lead singers and so did ac/dc and alot of other bands and they still put out great music with both frontmen.Im not saying its not possible, it just didnt happen with the misfits.i bet with sabbath and ac/dc other bands members helped with writing the music, but with the fits, glenn wrote ALL OF IT!the lyrics and the music...he even taught some of the members how to play their instruments.so guess what happens when glenn leaves?uh-oh...now the band has to write music for itself and try and stand on its own two feet.this stuff isnt terrible, there are a couple decent tracks on here, but its a totally different band with a totally different sound.i hope glenn will forgive me for buying this...it sux.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is awsome
i bought this album and it rocks. the new singer is awsome, but not as awsome as Danzig. I Luv The Misfits, their lineup now dosen't sound good. they have jerry and robo but no doyle that guy from black flag.
3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings
Wooh-oooh, woooh-ooh-ooh!This band has a distinct, however repetetive sound. One to rock out to with other people (ie, not by yourself in your room).Highlights include the title track as well as "From Hell They Came."Overall the album is catchy, but after it's all over you might not remember how any of the songs go (only one or two measures of the choruses for each song), but you'll remember that while it was happening you were having fun.Overall, this album can wake you up at any time of the day, but I think it's probably more fun to be a band member than a fan. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars grey noise and static empty shells
Terminal Tower is the album that got me into pere ubu. There are tracks on this that are so powerful that they chill your spine. Especially the song "heart of darkness". This song, to me, is the anthem of conscience. The first sound was truly the best intro of a pere ubu record. Though I wasn't alive when they started in Ohio, I heard that David Thomas would strike an anvil with a sludge hammer in this song. Songs like "30 seconds over Tokyo" and "final solution" are also very powerful and interesting. There is even a version of "modern dance" (the song) without the "Mamba Mamba" part of the verse. Generally this is a very interesting CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cleveland band Rocks the Terminal Tower
"Terminal Tower," a singles and B-sides collection by art-punk Cleveland band, Pere Ubu, is mostly a shot of well-envisioned musicianship. The first three songs here-- "Heart of Darkness," "30 Seconds Over Tokyo," and "Final Solution"-- are stellar examples of depressing, but high-concepted tunes, and are a testament to why this band was one of the leading forces of the American Punk Underground in the 1970's.
3-0 out of 5 stars PROMISE OF GENIUS
The promise of genius certainly shines through on these early tracks, but I was a little disappointed as this album does not quite have that hypnotic quality of, for example Dub Housing, where they create such exquisite sound sculptures on the synthesizer in a thoroughly rock idiom.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Half Assed
This CD starts out with some of the most uninspired music I've heard in a long time.It sounds like a kid forced to sing in front of his school and he wants to be anywhere but there. The songs eventually start to pick up in passion around track 7, but it's not worth it to buy a CD for less than half the songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Own
If your into early Punk Rock you have to own this album! 1945,Mainliner,and All the Answers are classic classic cuts. I consider this album just a notch above Mommy's Little Monster because the production and feel is so raw and powerful. This disc also has the best versions of All The Answers and Moral Threat! This is the way mike ness shoulda' kept Social D ,instead ofwatering it down over the years into pretty much a college rock band. Story of My Life? No thank You!!! Mass Hysteria? Hell Yeah!!! Do yourself a favor and pick up both Mainliner and Mommy's Little Monster Today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Social Distortion
The real reason to buy this CD is its inclusion of 1945 and Under My Thumb, songs which were originaly released on the 1945 e.p.. 1945 was released after Mommy's Little Monster, and its a pretty tough record to find. Other than that, some of these songs are from Mommy's Little Monster, which is still available on CD. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good compilation to start with...
This compilation is fine to give you a glimpse into ST's world and to see how their music and approach changed all over the years. From thrash-punk to heavy-metal, ST delivered many albums of great music, especially the triad JOIN THE ARMY, HOW WILL I LAUGH TOMORROW? and LIGHTS, CAMERA, REVOLUTION, their second, third and fourth releases, that deserve a place into the greatest albums of thrash metal, next to METALLICA, SLAYER, ANTHRAX and many more. In addition to the regular songs, you have new 97' recordings of "Join the army" (called "JOIN THE NEW ARMY"), and "Possessed to skate" (called "GO SKATE!"), and two new brand songs, "BERSERK" and "FEEDING THE ADDICTION".

4-0 out of 5 stars The genius of Lou
The main thing that has been in the way of Barlows excellent songwriting were other bandmembers. Now also only half of the songs are from his hand while the others were penned by Jason Loewenstein. Loewenstein certainly not is a bad writer, he just is not in the same league as the fragile songs of Barlow.

this is definately a much more attractive of a listen than static age for many reasons...it is more raw, has a better track listing, and i would assume this is what they really sounded like on vinyl and what not. i would definately pick halloween, where eagles dare, american nightmare, and who killed marylan over the songs they were replaced by one static age....if you are too much of a tight wad to get this and static age, get collection 2 and this...well along with earth AD and walk among us...collection 1 is a good investment too!..i only recommend the graves era to misfits die hards and ones who already know danzig.

5-0 out of 5 stars I remember halloween!
Tthe misfits are an awesome punk band. They are the ones who started punk! In fact, LOB is their best album ever. The main singer is Glenn Danzig, who has a badass voice, probably the most badassed one ever.

Editorial Review

"Ice Cold Ice," in which Bob Mould rails against "barren lands and barren minds" and Grant Hart falls in on the supercatchy chorus, exemplifies the Hüsker Dü career development that peaks on this final album. Without sacrificing the emotional intensity of earlier albums, the Minneapolis trio beefs up the guitar-based melodies and sneaks in pop songcraft in lieu of the old fast-and-loud hardcore style. On this 1987 double album, as usual, guitarist Mould supplies the personal songs ("Standing in the Rain"), while drummer Hart remains more broadly political ("Tell You Why Tomorrow"). Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Final Release
That this record gets better listener reviews than Flip Your Wig drives me crazy.Yes, there are some very catchy pop tinged songs on this release that I really do like but this record as a whole totally lacks the intensity of the SST works.Am I just a bitter fan who wanted to keep the band small and non-corporate?-Maybe, okay almost certainly.-I do understand that bands evolve and there sound changes ( I feel your pain Metallica fans!) with each trip to the studio but this recording sounds totally phoned in and forced. No, it's not terrible but clearly is the work of a band well on there way to imploding. If you are a fan you should certainly have this in your Husker Du library but if you are not familiar with the band start at Zen Arcade and work your way to this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the top bands of the 80s (Essential) (If not THE top...)
Husker Du was the greatest power post punk band of the 80s.They had a rapid, loud, searing sound like no one else. With songs like Ice cold Ice and She floated Away, HD defined their own sound in spades and waves of power chords. Both Mr. Grant and Mr. Mould combined to create incredible waves of guitars wrapped around and through Ramones-influenced short, frenetic songs that lyrically scaled poetic heights other bands just couldn't reach.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Familiar places that we turned into gardens"
Warehouse:Songs and Stories was the last Husker Du studio album. It was released in 1987.They are one of my all-time favorite bands and they seemed to get better and better with each album they made.In Warehouse they left their fans with a double-album filled with great tracks and absolutely no fillers. It's unfortunate that they broke up seemingly so soon, but both Grant Hart and Bob Mould continued with excellent solo records (I especially recommend Intolerance by Hart and Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain by Mould) as well as new bands Nova Mob and Sugar. Here is the warehouse-full of awesome tracks offered on this album:

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!!!
As a 13 year old in 1982, I had by chance tuned in to a local radio show that spotlighted an hour of music by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.I was in awe about their musical delivery, style, and humor.I learned a brief history of the band, and discovered that among the members was one Neil Innes, mastermind behind the music of the Rutles.I looked in vein for their studio albums, only to find 2 decent compilations that gave me different song line-ups of their "most popular" tracks.Although they were great to have, I always felt that there was more to the band than "Urban Spaceman" and "The Intro and the Outro."Cornology includes everything I had on those compilations, plus everything else from their studio albums.24 years later, I have a more complete picture of the wonderful zaniness that was the Bonzos. The first 4 albums were a revelation in the songwriting skills of Innes and Bonzo madman Viv Stanshall. The two writers balanced each other very nicely. Innes provided twisted contemporary pop while Stanshall kept the band in its original roots of music hall tunes plus bizarre English humor. What a great combination.Their early singles (i.e. "My Brother Makes The Noises for the Talkies") and the first CD (Gorilla) are great examples of their original style, while "Doughnut At Granny's Green House," "Tadpoles," and "Keynsham" are excellent at showcasing the Innes/Stanshall balance.Although their last "band" effort is not as balanced, "Let's Make Up . . ." is worth more than a few listens.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why did I wait so long?
I can't believe that I waited this long (2005) to make an effort to listen to the music and comedy stylings of the Bonzo Dog Band.I've been a fan of Monty Python since the early 1970s.Neil Innes' musical and acting contributions to Monty Python have always been apparent.I loved the Rutles when the TV movie and LP came out.So here I am just now listening to this fine three CD set!Actually, what got me to purchase this CD set was the fact that the Bonzo Dog Band are a constant onscreen presence on the DVD release of the British TV show "Do Not Adjust You Set", which I purchased in order to see four of the six members of Monty Python. Thus, I had the extra bonus of seeing and hearing lots of the Bonzo Dog Band.At that point I felt it was finally time to hear their recordings on CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars delightfully dotty dada stuff
This set has almost everything you'll need by the Bonzos, an anarchic, daft, dotty, and hugely enjoyable set of art students who made a handful of albums and some memorable live performances in the late 1960s and early 1970s before they split and went their separate ways. This set has all their five albums, although the remixing is sometimes a bit odd (Tadpoles notoriously mixes Monster Mash into Urban Spaceman, and ditches the 'sequins' version of Canyons for a different one). You'll find 'Gorilla', 'The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse', 'Tadpoles', 'Keynsham', and 'Let's Make Up and Be Friendly', as well as the A and B sides of their first two singles from 1966 and some post-Bonzo solo work from Vivian, Neil, and Roger.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5+ Stars...The Greatest Grunge Album--EVER
...and, if you are into grunge and don't have this CD, you're collection is incomplete. Not having this CD is like being a classic rock freak and not having Led Zeppelin IV, seriously.
5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe...
...only nine people have reviewed this album (actually, more like 8 - this Rubard fella's review is pretty obviously designed to be ignored). I also can't believe the people lining up to cry in this band's beer for them. I really doubt they're that broken up about how things turned out. It is also ridiculous to say that they could have "made it" if their sound had been more polished...polish is exactly what stole the magic away, starting with Piece of Cake: their last listenable album and a mere shadow of this fine, fine record.
5-0 out of 5 stars when mudhoney took there garage rock seriously...
if not one of the best probably actully the best album to come out of grunge town.it is way to bad that this album came out the same time as nevermind but it did.(ohhh welll).when i first saw the video for good enough (on 120 mins)it was an awesome sight.i looked for this album for weeks and listend to it for even longer when i got it.and it still sounds good today after all that hype of that scene has died down.this is great collection of songs when mudhoney took them selves very seriously.(not the last 2 albums (WOOFF).so thisis there last album from there founding lable sub pop and its a shame at that.that lable cared about mudhoney.. so as far as the album its raw full of great riffage from steve turner(the eric claptin of garage rock) and madman drums from dan peters the bestrockdrummer since keith moon.)and mark arms vocals are just amazing kind of sceaming wailing and talking all at the same time.the quality of the album is very much like listening to a garage band with massive talent.but thats what these guys were all about being one of the best garage bands of all time to bad they where thrown into that heap of music from grunge town.they were already doing just fine in the first place.so every track on this album is good so i cant tell ya the best.but what i can say this is to me a album that must be listened to VERY LOUD to be fully enjoyed !!!!! also if you decide like this one find the single that came out at the same time that features when the money rolls right in and a different version of cheakout time..then find marks and steves new band monkeywrench.which is a newband they are taking seriously again pure garage bluespunk rock!!!!! ...
