4-0 out of 5 stars Should have been a box set
While this is a great collection of earlier R.E.M., I would have rather seen a box set including the IRS material, live songs, and b-sides.The 2 CD offering is far too skimpy for this band.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection
This is a good buy for new listeners as well as old fans. It's good to hear the early stuff in a collection like this.Brings back many memories and recreates many moods.I am disappointed by recent REM recordings, but we always have music like this to appreciate.A must even for diehards.Nice packaging, too, with comments on many of the songs by the band members included in the accompanying booklet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Sound quality- Remastering gone very wrong
This is really sad, this is an otherwise excellent collection. But in today's quest for everything to be LOUD, the over compressed this so that it's lost almost all dynamic range, and is just stressfull to listen to. You hear things you never did before-- BECAUSE THAT WEREN"T SUPPOSED TO STAND OUT IN THE MIX!Everything just stays at the same level, it sounds like there are some phase issues on some tracks as well.

How do you condense 15 years of music down to 76 minutes? In the case of this survey of the second phase of R.E.M.'s career, the answer is: Exceptionally well. The dangling carrot for diehards is two new songs; the rapid fire "Bad Day" hurtles along like the kissing cousin of "It's the End of the World as We Know It," while "Animal" is anchored by a majestic drone reminiscent of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." In a surprising, but gratifying move, the rest of the program shortchanges the band's breakthrough, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good but what if.
With the remarkable IRS compilation just released, the question has to be presented...could this cd have been as good as that one is?
2-0 out of 5 stars Too much missing
No "Radio Song", "Turn You Inside Out", "Crush with Eyeliner", or, most shockingly, "Shiny Happy People"? Guess I'll wait a few more years for Warners to put out a better best of, like IRS just did of REM's early years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recurring Best
There are endless ways to assemble an R.E.M. anthology, let alone one from any other group, but this selection is marvelous. It is not only put together for their best work; it is arranged like an album. Many fans have lamented the absence of some big songs, like "Shiny, Happy, People," but this collection works well together.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of those
I few years ago I randomly picked up Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and was hooked. Hungry for more F'Lips I went back in time to this -- and was disappointed. Besides Race for the Prize and Waitin' For A Superman I didn't find much else to like. I decided to pick up this CD again recently, since I was going to one of their shows (it was unbelievable) and I was blown away. This is one of those albums that takes some time and careful listening to in order to fully appreciate its beauty. Tracks like Feeling Yourself Disintegrate and A Spoonful Weights A Ton are so well crafted I can only smile and sometimes even shed a tear. Simply gorgeous and worth every second.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have a nice day.
The Flaming Lips are perhaps the ultimate "happy" rock band.Their music is just perfectly fluffy and uplifting, without having to be too overtly sunny and positive.I really think it's impossible not to feel good while listening to these guys.Heck, even Trent Reznor lists the Flaming Lips as one of his favorite bands, and look at what a gloomy guy he is.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Modern Day Symphony
The major reason that "The Soft Bulletin" is such an amazing album is because at the time that it came out no really excepted that the Flaming Lips could make an album like it. Whilst they constantly realised albums that were brilliant, they were very much a cult college band.

Chronicling The Replacements' gloriously tempestuous decade on a single disc ostensibly seems akin to reading Cliff's Notes for the New Testament: No sooner do you grow fond of the protagonist than they've nailed him up. And if that comparison sounds a tad sacrilegious, perhaps you underestimate the Mats' hallowed place in modern rock history--and the hearts of their ardent fans. Yet somehow even this condensed format focuses the songs of Paul Westerberg and playing of bandmates Bob and Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars into a dramatic arc that can't be denied. The initial tracks of this 20-track collection display a band joyously besotted by nascent punk thrash, yet one not so different from the scores of similar bands tearing up local clubs in the '80s. 4-0 out of 5 stars Unreplaceable?
Ahh the Replacements. That band you've heard about for so many years but have no idea what they sing. Well as intended, here's the new first choice for the casual fan. This is better than their past collection because it draws from more than just 4 albums, sounds great, and is 20 tracks. The last 2 are "new" songs by the way, both decent. The first half of this disc is awesome. Song after song of primo 80's alternative. The later songs I still dig too, so they're a bit more polished and pop. "Alex Chilton" and "Can't Hardly Wait" might be the biggest hits here, but "Bastards Of The Young", "Achin' To Be", and "Merry Go Round" are great as well. I actually wish "Talent Show" was here too, but that's just me. Anyway, new fans or old, don't fuss over what's missing, just love what's here. I'd say this would go well with Paul's "Besterberg" disc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the (anti) legend
Normally when you browse amazon for replacements or westerberg/stinson related material, all of the "customers who bought this item also bought" entries are similar replacements/westerberg/stinson/etc. albums.Look at the list now... not another Minneapolis rocker to be found at all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite everything, but pretty close
Listening to this album brought me back to my teenage years growing up in the burbs, but made it seem like I actually had fun.Starting with the early punkier stuff to go with my early adolesent rage and wanting to get drunk to the later more mature songs of heartbrake and relationships, and wanting to get drunk. It's a good trip down blurry memory lane. ... We always suspected they had it in them, but who knew Yo La Tengo would finally craft a record as wholeheartedly terrific as this? Fourteen years into their career as indie rock's low-key mainstays, the Hoboken, New Jersey, trio have arrived--and it's about time. It's as though simply by sticking around long enough and doing the same thing over and over while constantly refining and focusing Yo La have evolved from scattered, record-collecting eccentrics into the true classicists of '90s indie rock. Blending elements of what has illuminated Sonic Youth, Stereolab, Pavement, and My Bloody Valentine, they've long had a clear voice but never sounded so comfortable using it. Willfully eclectic husband-and-wife multi-instrumentalists Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley--with third member James McNew never sounding more permanent--have previously tended to alternate between their instincts to be a pop rock band and to serve as artsy noisemakers. 5-0 out of 5 stars masterwork?
this album is exceptional for YLT.I often flounder between this one and 'and then nothing' being my favorites, but they are different.the variety of the songs is great but they all work together as a cohesive album, skipping tracks on this CD is completely unneccessary.there are still some great love songs and a post-punk tunes but this album is more lyrically and instrumentally mature then some of thier earlier works, such as 'Painful' or 'Electropura'.I honestly couldnt say enough about this cd, but i dont like writing long reviews... this is a personal favorite of mine

5-0 out of 5 stars Ranks among those obligatory 90s hipster discs
There is a certain amount of unanimity amongst critics as to what discs from the 1990s should be heralded as great, and "Heart" is generally granted propitious accolades. My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" is traditionally regarded as a superior recording, and for the most part it is. "Loveless" is an incomparable example of committed artistry, and it should garner adulations by its sheer density alone. However, I've always felt that "Heart", which for the most part exists in "Loveless"' vein of ethereal ambience, was the more immediately human and inviting record. "Heart"'s emotion exists on a unique artistic plane that few artists dare to tread, and the record's often convoluted lyrical musings are viscerally penetrating, more so than most modern pop records. Upon first blush, the band seems to rely on a relatively limited musical vocabulary throughout the album, but extended listens reveal a fairly rich tapestry of styles, sounds and impressive articulations. "Spec Bebop" is consistenly unnerving, but in at least one sense it seems like one of the most integral and necessary tracks on the record. YLT's Jesus and Mary Chain fetishism had to be illuminated at some point on "Heart", and "Spec Bebops" unrestrained entropy is a great testament to the band's willingness to explore the ether. Conversely, the apparent convention of "Little Honda", "Sugarcube" and "Deeper Into Movies" display another facet of YLT's artistic maturity, as well as the band's penchant for sheer histrionic onslaught. The solo midway through "Sugarcube" is the one of most vexing and hilariously apropos moments on any modern rock song, and it becomes apparnet that the band approaches such passages with an equal concern for irony and viability. "Autumn Sweater", perhaps due to its name alone, has become synonymous with stifled hipster love balladry, and by most accounts it stands as one of the most honest and telling rock narratives of the last fifteen years. YLT's ability to oscillate between Beach Boys sentimentality, Can experimentation and Sonic Youth flamboyance, all the while harboring a kind of self-assured ambivalence, is a sometimes startling testament to the band's musical prowess.

As these dimpled moptops from Oklahoma grow pepper-bearded and transform into wizened elder statesmen of sonic adventuring, the heartfelt candy of their loving bubblegum stretches ever longer into echoing soundscapes. If Radiohead are halfway to becoming U2, the Flaming Lips are nine-tenths of the way to pop nirvana. Hardly a song on Yoshimi isn't resonated, echoed, and reverberated--floating the listener higher until they have the ultimate bird's-eye view of what makes a great band tick. As with any album by the band, it's hard not to imagine parades and a sky filled with helium balloons while you listen to any of it--in this case, the party is enhanced brilliantly by digital filters and silver shimmering asides. The most immediate songs, like "One More Robot (3000-21)," are digital (almost trip-hop) dance numbers that lift the band out of the cornfields and into the loopy land of Björk. Little surprise, then, that the band are already following up this majestic splash of gummy bear brilliance by recording a CD with kids' TV show host Steve from Read more

Most holidays exclude somebody--on grounds of religious beliefs, political persuasion, or refusal to eat our fine feathered friends--but not good old Halloween, which has a little something for everyone. The same can be said of this 15-track collection, which spans modern music's sonic and sensory spectrums. It encompasses the noisy and danceable, nasty and nice. Most of the set is given over to party-ready tunes like the B-52's' "Devil in My Car" and the Ramones' "Pet Sematary," but its darker corners offer up a few eerie moments--such as MX-80 Sound's rendition of the horror classic "Theme from Halloween" and Sonic Youth's "Halloween." The disc closes on an appropriately creepy note thanks to horror master Roky Erickson, who spins a cautionary yarn called "Creature with the Atom Brain" that's guaranteed to cause more nightmares than a Milk Dud overdose. New Wave Halloween has the best halloween music i've heard. I like this cd a lot it has good music and i love Halloween. It has The Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, wich is the best song on this cd and the best song from a Musical Movie. This Cd Rocks Like Halloween.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too great for words...
Tell me how in the hell a band like Green Day with their simple guitar and drum rythyms get to be so big and an alternative meets punk band like SD doesnt get near the props they should? Its all marketing strategy in my opinion.SD blows the lid off with this album.Johnny Cash's remake, Ring of Fire totally rocks along with the jazzy lyrics of story of my life and sick boy make you think about the "good times" that everyday people can relate to...a perfect five stars for me.This is easy listening that anyone can enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite "New" Band since College
Every song is superb.Driving, running, daydreaming, this Social D classic makes me feel young and glad my hearing is still good."She's a Knockout" is as good as any song I've heard since college."Ring of Fire" is the only cover and it's worthy of the original."Story of My Life" is the best song and its lyrics are as good as the incredible music.Buy this CD and then "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" and you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the most significant releases of the 90s (really!!!)
in coming up with a value judgement on this record i have tried to steer clear of comparisons to any of the lips' other output, and view it in a sort of cultural freeze frame taking into consideration things like the grunge rock i still can't get enough of, the popular television programming and the overall atmosphere of the clinton 90s. what i came up with was that this record, probably more than any other, embodies the overwhelming sense of relief and newfound optimism that happened with the new administration and the "end" of the cold war. i may have said in other reviews that the clinton 90s are a time more distant from us at the present than even the cold war 70s and 80s...it was a wonderful era where a man was free to stick a needle in his arm and sing a jobim bossa nova over guitar feedback if he so chose and not worry about a draft or nuclear threats, etc. Wayne and company have the same ethic as the above-mentioned band and on this record they created something which i consider to be locked in a tie for the best radio-type song representative of the clinton era: she don't use jelly, of course, with the other standout (in my mind, at least) being interstate love song. the entire album features the crisp sound and elastic bass and guitar fuzztones which made the single famous, and it stands in sharp contrast to the flood of grunge releases from those couple of years because of the sonic clarity and cheerful vibe, and, to my ears (even as a dyed-in-the-wool, flannel-wearing ed vedder fanboy), it pretty much trumps all of them in terms of pure inspiration and consistency. now, to be fair, the lips are not my favorite band, nor is stp (that honor i reserve for crusty old mark lanegan and the screaming trees on sst). this is not my favorite lips album either (that would be yoshimi)...she don't use jelly is not even my favorite song on the record (i like chewin the apple of your eye for its unique chord progression and sparse acoustic guitar work...it is the only real break from the veritable deluge of fuzz); all i am saying is that this album is an extremely significant expression of the time period in which it was recorded and as such it has monumental value which is pretty much undeniable regardless of one's personal preferences.

5-0 out of 5 stars The second Flaming Lips masterpiece
I dont understand how one reviewer said this record is weak musically, Ronald Jones and Steven Drozd are very talented musicians. Not to mention Wayne Coyne's songwriting. "Moth in the Incubator" among others are classics. Production is perfect, the drum sound is loud and fat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doolittle or Daydream Nation?
Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth is an album that showed us that being an indie band with a punk edge and a pleasure for distortion can be helpful. The lyrics of this album are essential to this album because at times they seem innocent and unfamiliar and at other time they seem sinful and deviant. The album is beguiled with strange chords and pulsating drums. Thurston Moore provides the somber voice in some songs and then a screeching scream in others. Kim Gordon provides seduction of noise and her voice filled with lust draws you in. The album is evil and merciful at the same time and will always stand as one of the best of the 80's joining the ranks with "Doolittle" and "Remain in Light".

This album is one of the best sonic youth album...I advise everyone to listen this album...Break the circle of common popular music...This album irritates your soul and freedback your dreams...

3-0 out of 5 stars A Very Tough Listen
In truth, I think Sonic Youth are massively overrated in indie circles, but this album does have some good stuff on it. The first four tracks are the highpoint of the album, "'Cross The Breeze" in particular is thrilling and unquestionably the best track on here. After that, things are a little more mixed, with a fair bit of what I would call "filler." The main problem with this album is it's tonal repetitiveness and it's sheer length. This is a seriously difficult album to take all in one sitting, in fact I can't listen to the album the whole way through, it just doesn't hold my interest. Overall, it's compelling at times but I wouldn't call it any kind of masterpiece. New listeners are better off starting with Goo, Dirty or even Murray Street. None of those have a song as great as "'Cross The Breeze" but they provide more rewards for the casual listener. ... Read more

And just when I thought rock'n'roll was dead.DBT really are the savers of rock, they're all we've got now, and The Dirty South is simply amazing.Hard, fast, real, and most importantly fun, The Dirty South is an album to just shove in the cd player, and not have a need to skip a track. The perfect highway companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars top notch
the best band you've never heard of...my first taste of DBT - will certainly be going back for seconds, thirds,....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent picture of the South and Southern Music
I have heard various songs from this album on Satelite radio over the last few years, and decided to buy it this week.I LOVE it.I am a lifelong resident of the Southeast - Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and Florida.I would never live anywhere else by choice.Growing up with parents who would blast Skynyrd records as loud as the console stereo would go, I appreciate the evocation of those days. Also appreciated are the statements about the true issues of racism in the South - Personnaly I think that it is a more pronounced issue in Northern cities than it is here.As is written in the song "the Southern Thang", "...aint about the races, the crying shame, to the %@#!* rich the poor all look the same..." - and we pretty much get along with each other too.

Editorial Review

R.E.M.'s early recordings purposefully bury Michael Stipe's vocals, allowing them to dominate the audio mix no more than Peter Buck's jangly guitar figures or Mike Mills's bass. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars R.E.M.'s Rich Recording
'Life's Rich Pageant' is the fourth R.E.M. full-length album, and like the predecessors, is accomplished. This album, like the others, has a trademark. Here it contains their most unconventionally conventional pop and rock songs."...Pageant" contains propulsive anthems and some of their most pop-pleasing songs of any album. Their accomplishments were enough to propel them to the top ten next time around.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best of REM
Pageant is REM's best album, in my opinion, followed by Murmur and Automatic. This album contains a unique blend of their jangle-folk-rock roots and the lyrical mainstream band they would later become. For the first time, political themes show up frequently through a number of songs (Flowers of Guatemala, These Days, Begin the Begin, even Cuyahoga). This style is fantastic, but unfortunately unique to Pageant.Sadly, they basically abandoned this style for Document and Green (their worst work), finally rising out of the ashes with Out of Time and Automatic. So buy this album, because it's your only chance to hear something this good from REM.
5-0 out of 5 stars Their best
I've followed REM since their "Fables" days, and "Pageant" is my favorite of all of their albums followed closely by "Automatic for the People". I get the feeling that REM is running out of melodies as of late...or else, they don't want to repeat themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Resusitated the Heartbeat of Music
If you don't count R.E.M.'s first long E.P (extended play) beginning 'Chronic Town,' then their debut starts here.'Murmur' their first album is brilliant, deserving all the accolades that are heaped upon it.With brilliant echo effects, a repertoire of ecclectic guitar, including folk, rock, punk, and new-wave patterns, 'Murmur' would be the crowning achievement of any other band.Having romantic, religious, and surreal images, R.E.M. propulsively and hypnotically lives up to the band name with a solid set of songs that work well together. Before alternative was a household world, R.E.M. came up with an avant guard folk-rock, new wave masterpiece before anyone could give the genre a name.
5-0 out of 5 stars This album is gold... literally.
I'll keep this short and sweet, because anything I have to say about the actual album has already been said by other reviewers. This particular version is the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs version, which was remastered at their very high-tech labs and pressed on a 24-karat gold disc. Why gold?2 reasons: it reflects the laser better than standard aluminum, and it lasts longer, too.So what makes the MFSL version of this album so special?Well, to quote Shawn Britton of MFSL, "...the original version was mastered such that there wasn't much low frequency information...."This version is a flat transfer of the original master tape, meaning that all the low, deep bass you were originally supposed to hear is there in this version.
5-0 out of 5 stars When I learned of this, I knew they would one day be huge
I was a college freshman in the spring of 1983 and already had "Chronic Town" (just the 5-song EP, on vinyl), and my dorm roommate thought they stank and would never release anything else and would fade into oblivion along with hundreds of other Next Big Things.

Editorial Review

Fugazi fans already know that this is the original gospel according to Ian MacKaye. This Washington, D.C., quartet hit harder, faster, and franker than just about anybody--and were willing to see through their own bull as quickly as anyone else's. MacKaye manages to be charismatic and confrontational at the same time: tossing brilliant, genuinely funny asides into his serious-as-a- heart-attack lyrics. Meanwhile, the band, led by Lyle Preslar's staggering guitar attack, pushes MacKaye on with the tightest, most razor-sharp sound in all of hardcore. Nothing in the punk pantheon can come close to "In My Eyes," "Out of Step," or "Salad Days." Absolutely essential. Read more
