3-0 out of 5 stars I'm going to be really honest...
I can tell by reading the other reviews that my fellow, "Hazelnuts" are trying to be really supportive of the band...kinda like when your kid brother comes off stage from performing and you have to tell him how, "Great" he was.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Absolutely" Amazing
When a band has released so many awesome albums, you always wonder if the next one will live up to the others.Sister Hazel has "ABSOLUTELY" done it again! This album has the perfect blend of upbeat sing-a-longs as well as their classic ballads that you can label as soundtracks to your life.I am hooked on this cd, and can't even pick a favorite song.Of course "Hey Hey" is catchy and "Beautiful High" makes you want to hit the repeat button, but then you want to get to "This Kind of Love" still.Wow, there are so many great tunes.Thank you Sister Hazel for staying true to yourself and producing another amazing album!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good amidst the Bad
With so much BAD music coming out, a nice contemporary/bar rock album for us. Sister Hazel is hard to dislike. Same goes with this album -- a nice collection of songs with a great flow from one to another, with several stand-out "damn good" songs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun
After I heard a few tracks off this album, I was really excited 'cause they were all a lot fun, catchy, and solid songs. When I bought the album, I thought it was a little sketchy - good, but I knew it'd take a few spins to warm up to it (the same thing happened to me with stellestarr*, and as a side note, if you're coming "from" them, you'll like CYHSY, if you like CYHSY, you'll prolly like stellestarr*).Okay, like it seems for so many others, it was the singer who got to me every now and then - I mean, taking that voice for an entire album....But as I listened to it a few more times, and now, again, after a short break, I'm starting to love them - and I've found that the "grating" vocals (would anyone else say... campy?) only add another layer: yeah they get to me sometimes, but somehow it makes me like them more. And the instrumentations... so good!

5-0 out of 5 stars CLAP YOUR HANDS AND SAY THANKYOU!!! (4.5 really)
Forget about all the intellectualizing done in the other reviews that focus on how "bad" and "annoying" the singer is.What I know is that I'm an infuriatingly selective headphones junkie and I keep listening and listening and LISTENING to this record. So if you want to accuse Alec Ounsworth of something, accuse him of having the guts and brilliance to offer up something new, fun and heartfelt to a music world swimming in boredom, convention and vapidity. There are times when CYHSY are just about as exciting as the jumpiest Animal Collective songs but with lyrics you can actually decipher. Also the running time is perfect at just over thirty-seven minutes, observing the philosophy, "Do your best stuff and get the hell out."Bold and comfortable at the same time.Quite rare.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just misses all the notes
On purpose.Possibly the best music in 50 years.Listen to it a few times before you post a review. The band's voice is definitely a barrier but it's not insurmountable. ... Read more

On his seventh album (and first for Dave Matthews' ATO label), David Gray refines his sonic palette with wonderful results. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great
There is something very cinematic about David Gray's "Life In Slow Motion". It begins like a dream drifting back in time - like snow falling on a quiet troubled world (that's what I'm feelin). The next song "The One I Love" is a poignant love song from the lips of a dying man. Next song - depression - "honey lately I've been way down". What follows are more songs of depression, desperation, and beauty. What a soulful voice David Gray has. "Life In Slow Motion" is very well produced - with piano, strings and the occasional well placed synth. It sounds contemporary and yet old at the same time. I love it - I think it's his best album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and mellow
David Gray has always been a favorite of mine. Very mellow songs but great for work or just relaxing.

5-0 out of 5 stars David Gray takes us on a magnificent journey....
David Gray's - Life In Slow Motion - takes us on a journey that only has a beginning and never ends because you will never want it to end.Listen to the haunting "Alibi" one time; or the oceanic "From Here You Can Almost See The Sea" (subtitiled by me: Just Another Fool In Love); or the powerful, "Now and Always" -Listen once, I dare you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Godsmack IV: Back to Basics
I have enjoyed listening to the alternative hard rock group, Godsmack for quite awhile since listening to their album 'Awake. In this 4th album release self titled 'IV', Godsmack retained its right and proper path in maintaining its familar rock/metal sound. Why should a band experiment if what they have going at the moment works for them? Instead of changing, Godsmack have decided to confirm and strengthen their case. Sully remains lead singer and driving force behind this quartet of rockers. His vocals retain their strong features that carry each song richly.
2-0 out of 5 stars How can aggression sound boring?
Godsmack has pulled off a feat: making tortured, aggressive sound, innovative production, quality musicianship and clever lyrics seem so ... boring. Their anger, their sabre-rattling at imagined enemies, it doesn't feel like they believe it themselves. There is a lot of squandered potential here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Godsmack stays innovative with release of IV
Many times in the rock band realm, bands try and expand their direction and vision. They try to change the tempo, the sound, and anything to try and garner more of the wind that their sails have captured in the past. Many don't make it as fans that want more of the same formula often times sneeze at the change in direction. With IV, Godsmack still retains some signature sounds in sonic dire that is poetic and solid, while taking the edge off a bit here and there that was so prominent in past recordings. In all reality, it is not much change as we have seen this band progress to this point since the release of their self-titled debut album in 1998.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharing the Blessing
There are some bands that one is happy to hear the first time, and there are others that make one feel blessed. Listening to this Decembrists' CD, I reveled in my good fortune; what a wonderful world we live in that can yield music this good.
5-0 out of 5 stars We live this close to death
An astounding debut album, CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS became the foundation upon which the witty, eloquent Decemberists six began to build their empire. Trying on this album is like buying new clothes (a shopping metaphor, witness me aghast!) - at first they're stiff, they don't fit comfortably, and you look a little awkward in them, but once you've broken them in after a few wears they're worth their weight in gold.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Contemporary Classic
This album is the total package that 1 looks for in an album.First, musically, it's pop music, but a different kind of pop.Kind of like the Beatles doing Sea Chantys of the mid 1800's.Lyrically it follows many of these same themes. It is interesting to note that Collin Meloy, the lead singer, wanted to be a novelist before forming the band, and it shows with the lyrics.Every song tells a story that is humorous, ironic, and heart wrenching in every way imaginable. It truly takes the listener along for an experience; a rarity these days, when everyone is so concerned withdeath and trying to be serious, then getting in the way.Overall, a great buy, and soon to become revered as a classic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Beautiful Album
I, like Beck as he wrote this album, recently seperated from my girlfriend. As most people know this can be extremely depressing and heart wrenching. And although i don't give all the credit to this album, it deserves a lot for helping me get through it. The album is a work of art even if you're not experiencing a break up. But if you are, you will truly connect with Beck and what he's trying to convey. Some of his lyrics made me feel like we shared the exact same emotions when thinking of our failed relationships. It's very comforting to be honest. You can hear the depression and hopelessness in his voice. His whole world must have been shattered when he split with his girl. Every song on this album is brilliant. The Golden Age, Paper Tiger, Guess im Doing fine, Lost Cause, Lonesome teas and Around the Bend are true standouts. One of my all time favorite albums, a real masterpiece of sadness.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterwork
After repeated listens, this album gains greater and greater depth. With only a few listens, you think you are listening to a Blues album with slick production. In a while, however, you will see that Sea Change is also an incredible melding of Country and modern Electronic.Beck seems to have a very strong respect for the Country and Blues of yesteryear, but he certainly has an ear for what is to come. The first minute of "The Golden Age" is powerful enough to send you back into our country's wild younger years, but Beck is not looking back.We all know he is saying goodbye to his ex-girlfriend, but he is really sending out a farewell for Blues, Country, and the young, wild innocence of us all.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's Good, but Overhyped...
I was expecting something brilliant because of all the hype surrounded by this one album. Beck is a good band, I wouldn't say that they're immensely talented, but they have some great songs. Frankly, I found this album boring. That's not to say that the lyrics and the music aren't beautiful, but at times all the songs come off as sounding exactly the same. The fact that they all have the same theme-sadness- doesn't really help either. As somebody has said, there are more ways to express sadness than one. Beck just keeps using the same lazy, depressed, bummed out sound throughout each song. It almost puts me to sleep with each listen. I think Beck has better songs and albums out there. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Five for Fighting is actually just one guy with a rather substantial chip on his shoulder who's taken his name from the amount of time a hockey player spends in the penalty box for fighting. Los Angeles native and erstwhile prodigy John Ondrasik really knows his way around a melody, bolstering it with a dramatic sense of timing and rhythm like a more modern and hipper Elton John. And that defiant chip does makes for powerful poetry, although oftentimes he sacrifices logic and clarity for the sake of iambic pentameter. While "Superman" is a catchy affair about the restrictions of being superhuman and the desire to belong ("I'm only a man in a silly red sheet looking for special things inside me"), it's doubtful that anyone who ever read a DC comic would believe that Superman would ever be "digging for kryptonite on this one-way street," since a loose fragment from Superman's home planet might turn him into a blubbering infant or a giant ant. At best, Five for Fighting follows in the narrative-based path paved by Counting Crows. Read more

For all his tattoos and bulked-up frat-boy persona, singer Bradley Nowell had real soul, which made his fatal heroin overdose even more tragic. There's more to this Long Beach, California, trio's debut, released shortly after Nowell's death in 1996, than white suburban punks imitating Jamaican ska music. The band comes up with great songs, notably the catchy MTV hit "What I Got"; spooky dub-reggae undertones, produced by the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary, to go with the snappy horns; and surprisingly progressive lyrics that attack sexism and other social ills, especially on "Wrong Way." Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, obvious forebears, Sublime become slightly tiresome after 17 songs, but the band is great in short doses. Read more

Pre-Lilith Fair, McLachlan had critical acclaim and a cult following but was otherwise just another hard-working female singer/songwriter--one who wasn't blasting down doors with overt sexuality or popping along in front of a male Svengali. Similar in their emotional urgency to her more recent work but delightfully less polished, these folk-rock songs are surprising gems. If not for McLachlan's poignant vocals, lyrics like "Your love is better than ice cream" (on "Ice Cream") would sound childishly absurd (especially alongside deeper material like "Hold On"), but here they're given just as much respect as the weightier issues she explores. A great album to accompany your moments of introspection. Read more

Billy Idol's secret is one that he shares with, of all people, Trent Reznor--the ability to take a pop base and disguise it with layers of other genres, most notably hard rock. His adaptability is on display throughout this 16-song career retrospective. It's amazing just how well the former Generation X frontman's songs have aged. Canadian singer Leslie Feist has served as a guest vocalist for Norwegian folkies Kings of Convenience, Toronto power-pop troupe Broken Social Scene, and - under the frightening moniker "Bitch Lap-Lap" - the hairy female rapper Peaches. But her unruly resume hardly prepares you for the emotionally rich, softy sensual music on her major label debut. Moving from tortured torch songs such as "Lonely Lonely" to pulsating originals like "Mushaboom," it also contains stunning remakes of Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart" and the Bee Gees' "Inside and Out," tunes Feist not only makes her own but effectively uses to dissect her romantic desolation. "Don't you wish we could forget that kiss?" she smolders on the title track. Not in this lifetime. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoying this CD Thoroughly!
I hadn't even heard of "Feist" before my 16 year old son made me a compilation CD of various artists. I heard "Mushaboom" and was delighted. "Who IS this?" I asked him, and he told me. I felt so out-of-it, but also very happy to discover that not every female vocalist nowadays sounds like Minnie Mouse on speed, thank Heavens. There are some out there who can sing and who are not afraid to be a bit different than the mainstream. Her voice is unique, and Feist's style is hard to peg. I like that. I immediately went on Amazon, listened to some samples and read some reviews, then bought my first "Feist" CD. I have not been disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Near-universal appeal
Sometimes a record comes along that appeals to suburban housewives, business executives, and downtown hipsters alike. "Let it Die" crosses such demographic barriers by force of sheer excellence. Leslie Feist is a captivating performer, and her honeyed vocals carry an album that is eclectic in tone and musical styles. It starts with the smoky acoustic bossa-nova of "Gatekeeper," continues through the ecstatic, swinging "Mushaboom," and gets soulful and subdued on the title track.

A singing duo of Amanda Barrett on mandolin and dulcimer, and Abby DeWald on guitar, this is the second release by The Ditty Bops. They draw liberally on genres of yore, hopping from western swing to vaudevillian theatrics, jazz, and folk music. They mine a vein similar to what Dan Hicks was doing with his Hot Licks in the early seventies, though their compositional sensibilities embrace a wider realm. Sympathetically produced by Mitchell Froom (who also plays keyboards, including a dazzling turn at the piano on "Aluminum Can"), they're joined by some of the finest players to be found in Los Angeles, including the ever-apt percussion of Elvis Costello's longtime drummer, Pete Thomas. While the title song opens the set on a quaint note, by the third number, "Fall Awake," it becomes clear that The Ditty Bops are not to be pigeonholed. The set's one cover, Boudleaux and Felice Bryant's "Bye Bye Love," is sweet but breaks the parade of their own resonant and mysterious songs.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Angels with an attitude
The Ditty Bops stalwartly ignored the typical pop conventions in their self-titled debut -- and they continue ignoring in "Moon Over the Freeway," their second album of jazzy folky ragtimey cabaret pop.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yes to the Bops
Darn those Ditty Bops for songs that you can't get out of your head.A better, beautiful and more hauntingly gorgeous melody than Moon Over the Freeway - if it exists, it must be in another universe.Very seldom would I buy a 2nd CD unheard but after that first incredible debut cd, there was no doubt that I was going to love this one too and I do but in a much different way.The only true comparrison I can make about the two is that I loved every song passionately on the first and the "Moon" isn't a "10 for 10" but a good "6" and what tunes they are.

These two young ladies continue with the innovative, pleasing and humorous ways. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of experiencing the "Bops" live, you are missing a true theatrical treat.I mean, after all, how many performers can you listen to while one of the members of the troupe carves a pumpkin on stage during several of the songs?

5-0 out of 5 stars Sting is the MAN!
I have been a fan of Sting ever since I was in college.I actually got to see him in person in the late 80's.I have just about every cd he has ever put out so when this one did I ran right out and bought it.Every song on it is great and it IS one of my most favorite cd's I own.

3-0 out of 5 stars save me from rock star theologians!
Much has been said in praise of this recording in the other reviews. I can't add to it. On the surface I enjoy most of it, particularly Fields of Gold. I was looking for a "Best-of" for Sting and this is really good. I wish it had "Little Wing", but it's a nice collection all the same. However, on the down side. Why are there so many songs that have these cracks at faith, Jesus and God? How tiring. Please spare me the rock and roll theologians who think they're asking the profound questions. His ignorance of the bible is so thorough, he ruins his own songs!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional greatest hits album!
Sting's best of album from 1994 showed such a remarkable transition from a hit making band the Police into a successful solo artist. I'm kind of put off by the album title because I didn't hear any new solo music from him in 1984--we heard his first album out in 1985! All my favorites are on here, from If You Love Somebody, Russians, We'll Be Together, All This Time, Fields of Gold, Be Still My Beating Heart, Englishman in New York, Fortress Around My Heart (how it shifts from soft mood to loud rock guitars back to back and then back to soft is quite something!)and others. I love the two new songs; sort of a '90s trend for some artists making greatest hits albums. I still love When We Dance 11 years later; proof that his songs still remain timeless! This is such a smartly done collection that doesn't rely on his hits, but on some more artistic songs that weren't singles too. He is a true pop star for the ages! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the most interesting group of its generation
stop comparing this to u2 and pink floyd.the comparisons aren't apt, and this album is far superior to anything that (decent) pink floyd and (horrible) u2 have ever done.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good listening
...when you're gearing up for suicide. This whole album sounds like the last thoughts and comments of a person who's going to just end it all. I found myself suffering nightmares, fatigue, misery and paranoia. My ears unclogged but I started getting headaches and a fuzzy feel in my head. This is not a good album for the stressed, because it will just make you feel worse. I find this album unlikable and mostly unenjoyable. When I first listened to it it sounded inaccessable, after listening to it more and more I started to get more "into" it, but I can't say I found it a good place to be in. It's a somewhat interesting album, but it mostly just dragged me down, made me nervous, numb and hurt my head.
1-0 out of 5 stars I didn't think that they could get any gayer..(is that a word? Gayer???)
Listening to this album is like receiving a LONG SLOW ENEMA. I still have no idea what people see in this much OVERATED band. I understand the comparisons to U2 (which, by the way, is a far superior band), but Pink Floyd?? Pink Floyd runs circles around this poor excuse for a band musically and lyrically!! Creep is their only good song.....There I said it. ... Read more

With valuable assistance from producer Rick Rubin, the Peppers find just the right blend of punk, funk, and hip-hop. Even with a running time of 74 minutes, this 1991 breakthrough has continuity and cohesion both within and across the 17 cuts. Riding Flea's surging bass, Anthony Kiedis delivers his explicit lyrics with a rapper's flair, extolling the virtues (and outlining the dangers) of sex and drugs. Plaintive ballads such as "Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied," and the hit "Under the Bridge" give the album depth and provide contrast to the raw energy of "Mellowship Slinky in B Major," "Funky Monks," and "Give It Away." Rubin masterfully fuses John Frusciante's raunchy guitar with the irresistible grooves. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The closest thing to "Modern Masterpiece" you're likely to hear
Yes this is a very good party album, Flea is an an awesome funk bassist and Anthony Kiedes' raps are great - I'm not a big rap fan, either! And I also love how the Chili Peps mix in some heavy guitars - being a fan of Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, etc, I do like good headbanging music (though it's not all I like). And the ballads Breaking the Girl, I Could Have Lied and especially the smash Under the Bridge are all excellent - unlike most hard rock bands, these guys can cut great ballads! But the funk songs are the best - Give It Away is certainly the song most people think of when they think of the Chili Peppers. Great reason for that! Suck My Kiss sounds like a cross between AC/DC and Parliament; Power of Equality is a great rap/funk/social commentary thing, My Lovely Man is very emotional... yeah. But there are some fillers: The title track is sort of bleah, and the cover of Robert Johnson's They're Red Hot is more of a joke song than anything else. And both Funky Monks and Sir Psycho Sexy, while good, go on a bit longer than usual. Still it's a solid album, and if you're a rock fan, be it classic, alternative or other, this should be in your collection. Generally I detest alternative rock, but this is an exception - the Chilis are certainly the best band to form in the past 20 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums of the last 20 years
In the summer of 2005, Spin magazine released a list of the top 100 albums from 1985-2005, and somehow they left this album off the list.I was pretty apalled.
5-0 out of 5 stars My girl's insane, but it's alright
This is an all-time great. One for the time capsule. There might not be such a FUN album out there.Besides a melancholy song or two (the beautiful "Under the Bridge" and "I Could Have Lied"), this album is jam-packed with funky, creative, witty songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indeed one of the best Massive Attacks
Ok, this is trip hop at its best (and not pop like some reviewers called it).
5-0 out of 5 stars The best album ever!
Even better than DJ Shadows Private Press (which is the second best album ever).

5-0 out of 5 stars Massive Attack's Finest Hour
Easily this ecclectic group's best album, "Mezzanine" is really a strong testament to how well developed this band's sound became up to this point in their carreer. Although this album suffers a bit on the back end, the first 4 tracks (skipping the 5th track) and then the 6th track are probably the best rapid succession of trip-hop (with a darker, more organic edge) songs one could wish to hear. My only complaint is that the final five songs can almost be dismissed although to do so would probably not allow the first bunch of songs shine as much as they do. ... Read more
