4-0 out of 5 stars I just like it
Bought it unheard when recommended by the dude at the bookstore and really really have enjoyed it.Yeah, it's pretty much pop, but with a smart twist.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK ...
I love Get Over It as much as the next person but these guys are not exactly "smart" rock. I also dont believe they are as nerdy as Weezer either. But they try almost as hard as Weezer to portray their "(un)fashionable" image. They try too hard and overproduce everything. Also the lyrics, while they can be catchy, are just awful after Get Over It.They can nail some big hooks but these just disguise how formulated this album is.To me they are like a better Weezer, which isnt saying much. After the first 3 songs there is nothing very exciting on this album. Also "hey" is their favorite word, have you noticed?
4-0 out of 5 stars OK Go amazes the crowds.
OK Go displays a great style, whether it be the actual music or even their clothing.Their music has a great sound to it, very new-age rock with the slightest bit of old time rock and roll (or at least that's what I hear in it).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
I just bought this on itunes mainly because I saw them play "a certain romance" on saturday night live and it inspired me to play my guitar along with the recording. the rest of the album is good but i still think "a certain romance" is well beyond anything else on the album. i actually find the single "i bet you look good on the dancefloor" kind of annoying but some of the other tracks are great!

5-0 out of 5 stars great sound, should be getting more cred
arctic monkeys rock. litteraly. they are a great alternative rock group that cant help but make you want to turn up the volume and just start jamming. these guys are much better compared to many other upbeat rock groups that are trying to make it out there. these guys are definately legit. songs that i have enjoyed on this cd include fake tales of san francisco, a certain romance, and i bet you look good on the dance floor. like i said these guys are great and are bound to make you feel happier and more energetic when you listen to them. definately a good cd.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Lesser Imitation...
...of much better bands. The Arctic Monkeys have been quickly labeled as a brilliant, breakthrough band by their fans and a great deal of the British media. The NME has hailed "Whatever People Say I Am, I'm Not" as one of the best British albums ever, ranking it at #5, just below The Beatles, The Smiths, Oasis, and The Sex Pistols and ranking higher than Blur, Pulp, The Clash, and The Libertines! The NME has earned quite a reputation for seizing upon certain new bands and shoving them in everyone's face; they did this with The Libertines. The difference is, however, that The Libertines were worthy of this recognition because they were actually a fantastic band and have been a major influence for newer bands. Some people, obviously, may disagree because musical genius is up to personal interpretation...but, to me, the Arctic Monkeys merely sound like the leftover scraps, bits, and pieces of their contemporaries. I thought "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" was rather catchy, so I bought the whole CD. I can't say I was disappointed, because it was exactly what I was expecting; more of the same! Though that particular song is a highlight (as well as "The View from the Afternoon", "Riot Van, and "When the Sun Goes Down"), the rest of the album is VERY forgettable. I've listened to it several times now, but I really don't recall most of the other songs off-hand until I hear them again. This album got to #24 at it's peak in the US and #1 in the UK (where it had the fastest first week sales of an album in UK history). It's not a particularly unfortunate thing that they're popular; they are, at least, a decent band. The problem that I have is that they're kind of stealing the thunder from some bands (like the Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party) that are far more polished and memorable than the Arctic Monkeys. It's also easy to pick up the hint of influence of The Strokes and The Libertines lurking within many of the songs. Perhaps this band's originality will finally come through in their second album. ... Read more

Resembling at times a soft-sung Robert Plant, Buckley was an intuitive vocalist capable of dizzying arabesques and choir-boy sweetness. He is joined here by a tight band for 10 tracks highlighting his stylistic range--Pearl Jam bluesy on "Eternal Life," impossibly serene on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," art-school noisy on "So Real," Led Zep daring on "Mojo Pin." Unorthodox, this was the debut of '94. Read more

How else can you describe the combination of his beautiful voice and well written music?I can't add anything to the volumes that have been written about this album already. An album with well over 500 reviews that is holding a 4.5 star average must have something going for it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Born to Croon
Jeff Buckley sounds like what Marc Bolan would have sounded like if Bolan had taken Perry Como as his musical muse.Seriously, think about Marc Bolan trying to sound like a '50's crooner and you'll know what Jeff Buckley sounds like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius
Gone to soon. What would he have become we will never really know and we are not better off because of his untimely death. An artist with creative vision and the talent to back it up. There is so little of his original music available it is difficult to really understand were he was headed and were his creative would have eventually taken him. The multiple albums of his original music has captured his songs in different stages of develoment and arrangement such that no two versions are completely the same and document his development.

Music doesn't come more touching than this. With their debut single alone, the emotion-fortified "Shiver," Coldplay prove they can shift between elated and crushed in a breath, as singer Chris Martin pours out music's oldest chestnut (unconditional yet unrequited love) with the shakiest of voices and a backdrop of epic guitars. 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This CD is brilliant! Six stars! It perfectly melds classical music with rock. I can't recommend it highly enough. Shara Worden's lyrics and vocals are gorgeous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Original, and bright
While driving recently, I was lucky enough to hear a large part of Shara Worden's new CD, Bring me the Workhorse. I don't often listen to rock music--these days, classical is my preference when I'm not stuck in the car, glued to my kids' rap and hip hop--and I can't remember the last time I bought any. But this is one CD I'd consider. It's so original, and, well, musical.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Surprising Debut!
My first impression of Shara Worden came when she was syncopating "I-L-L-I-N-O-I-S" to Sufjan Stevens' "They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back from the dead!! Ahh!!" It should come as no surprise, then, that I envisioned Shara's voice to be cutesy and poppy. Add in the fact that my first time to actually lay eyes on her was in a cheerleading uniform, performing as an Illinoisemaker, and it really just seemed to fit. My Brightest Diamond is Shara Worden; a very different girl than I imagined.

5-0 out of 5 stars `I Stand With The Sons Of Cain'
I first purchased a copy of `The Joshua Tree' on tape when I was 15 years old after I had bought `Rattle and Hum'. I loved many of the new songs on `Rattle and Hum' like Heartland, Desire and Hawkmoon 269 so `The Joshua Tree' was a natural purchase. This is where the problem starts and where I differ from a lot of other `Joshua Tree' fans but the reason may be lost on the CD generation. (Side A / Side B) Bands often put all their best material on Side A of a record through a sometimes pain staking selection process. The problem I have with this album is that I prefer and believe side B to be infinitely superior to Side A.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential in any rock collection
This album is quite possibly their crowning glory and is what all their other albums are judged by. It continues in the direction that Unforgettable Fire paved the way for. The opening three songs show U2 looking inward, loneliness, relationships, have become rock anthems and a staple for their concerts. The sound is carried over to In God's Country & One Tree Hill. The other tracks display U2's interest in America and it's music. And the way Exit builds is simply superb. An essential album in the annals of rock history and an essential addition to any music collection. Their recent offerings pale compared to this. What do you mean you don't own it yet?

5-0 out of 5 stars U2 finds what they have been looking for.
Alright I am a diehard U2 fan and have all their LPs, a few EPs and three singles.Back in 1987, I bought the CD thinking "Wow, another U2 release," and flying down to FL to visit my parents. To tell the truth, "Fire" disappointed me a little bit, so I was very curious about this release. When I first heard the opening notes to "Where the Streets have No Name" and Edge's ringing guitar, I was spellbound.Yes, I loved U2 but I hadn't expected anything like this.I continued listening to the CD and it was a masterpiece, classic song after classic song.I kept listening to it even after I got home, and even now, I still listen to this CD on iTunes, ages after it first came out. From "Streets" to the tear-jerking closer of "Mothers of the Disappeared", there is not one bad song ("Exit" isn't as good as the rest but still awesome).

Editorial Review

The Goo Goo Dolls have long since traded the bracing, Replacements-lite abandon of their early days for an ethos of heart-on-their-sleeve emotionality wed to a solid heartland pop craftsmanship that's too easily been casually mislabeled. Superstar producer Glen Ballard (who shares many a writing credit here as well) pushes that latter sensibility to its logical extremes, ensuring a slick sonic experience that won't disappoint those who hitched themselves to the Dolls' wagon circa their mid '90s commercial breakthrough. But there remains a nagging sense that this is a band that isn't pushing itself very hard: even the hook-solid opening single "Stay With You" seems downright cautious. Coupled with Ballard's penchant for polish, Johnny Rzeznik's introspection on "Without You Here" hews close to the center line before Robbie Takac's "Listen" gives the album a much-needed jolt of energy. The album's featured cover, a faithful, contemporary AOR-friendly take on Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit," is emblematic of the Goo Goo Dolls fortunes here: They often seemed boxed in by a past that's not necessarily their own. This is the most ovhyped paltry piece of corporate garbage that has been my displeasure to enter my ears. -_-This album is terrible... not much more to say then that. The muscianship is terrible, the lyrics are more cheesy than you'd believe possible.I mean come on with a title like Let Love In you can basically tell this is the epitimy of all sellout albums.About anything up to before A boy named Goo is great with ACTUAL LYRICS!!!Plus its not a snoozefest they all have great songs to listen to!Guess its bands like this that keep the greedy corporate machine running.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Goo Goo Dolls CD!!!
There are a lot of great songs on this CD...At first I only recognized the hits like "Better Days","Stay With You", and "Let Love In", but then as I listened to the other songs they kept growing on me, and now I can sing the words to all of them! One thing I really liked about this CD, and previous ones like Dizzy up The Girl, and Gutterflower, is that there are so many great songs on each CD. It really seems that Johnny and the boys have taken great care in making sure each song is great, not like some groups where 1 or 2 songs are potential hits, and the rest are filler. I highly recommend that you get this CD!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars What happened?
I will be honest here, I love the Goo Goo Dolls steming from the first album I bought, which was jed.I can understand to really make it in this business you need to be on the radio and the googs have done just that. They have metomorphed their music for the main stream. That part Im okay with, Ive actually enjoyed their previous mainstream albums. However with this one Im just plain dissapointed. It seems like Im listening to a 80's love ballards.Where is the power?Where is the rock? They are all mainly love ballards with no real power to them.I can really only enjoy the first couple of songs on the album and the rest just disgusts me.Even when the guitarist guy (ive forgotten his name) tries to have a go at a ballard its rediculous. He dosent have the voice to be singing those kinds of songs.I really feel they have lost their touch as a band. I am wondering what John was thinking when he wrote this album and put it together.Im really dissapointed. It way to lovey dovey and soft for me ... Read more

Editorial Review

This Seattle-based band was formed from the ashes of the incredibly talented Carissa's Wierd [sic], whose mopey and self-deprecating songs were like some magical and baroque combination of the Magnetic Fields, Cat Power, and Leonard Cohen. Longtime friends of Iron and Wine, few fans in their native Pacific Northwest could understand why Carissa's weren't huge. But they weren't, and after three albums and few folks really caring, they naturally broke up. Band of Horses, led by ultra-charming CW bassist Ben Bridwell, is a remarkably different, though just as radically excellent, brand of indie-pop sulk. These songs are anthems to ambivalence, and Bridwell's lovely high-pitched trill will please any fan of Built to Spill, the Shins, and Modest Mouse. It takes a few listens to sink in, but Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamy, Sad, Happy and Smart
I would hear a fantastic song on our local station KEXP (truly the greatest music station to ever exist) and after a couple more songs played, they would say that fantastic song was Band of Horses. This happened several times, then I saw them on Letterman and realized how incredible this band actually is. The vocals and echoey quality does sound a bit like My Morning Jacket. People have compared them to Neil Young (I don't really see it). Maybe a little of Flaming Lips thrown in. Possibly Arcade Fire. But they stand on their own. I can't listen to the CD enough. If you like dreamy, beautiful, well-crafted indie pop, or are just an open-minded music lover looking for something new and different, then buy the CD. I cannot imagine you'd be disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars **1/2
Despite all the other opinions, I find that they sound much more like Porno for Pyros (Perry Farrell's post-Jane's Addiction band) than My Morning Jacket. They are much poppier and, IMHO, more boring than MMJ.This is very run-of-the-mill stuff that doesn't stand up to repeated listenings.I liked it most after a single spin, and my enthusiasm has shrank with each repeat to the point that I can't imagine a mood that would warrant another listen. ... AFI is one of the more exciting acts in the quasi-rock mainstream. While they aren't risk takers in the Tim Buckley sense, they certainly aren't scared of adding fresh interesting levels to their maturing foundation. This of course accumliated in their best release to date,"Sing the Sorrow."This isn't the case with "December Underground" as they appear to have cut themselves down to the old punk quick so that they may construct an entirely different sound from the rubble.

Guero is definitely enjoyable to listen to, but it still doesn't match Odelay. I like pretty much every song on the album, but some of them are kind of boring to listen to. I don't know why, I just didn't enjoy this album as much as some of Beck's others. Here are my ratings for each song:

This album is great - if you're already a fan, you can't go wrong with "Oh, Inverted World." As Natalie Portman so accurately put it, "The Shins will totally change your life."

4-0 out of 5 stars The Shins: An Indie Rock group thats going places!
I've never been one to jump all over "Indie Rock". In fact, until a couple years ago I had never really paid attention to that genre, I figured it was probably underground alternative rock (it is) that I probably would not enjoy or find sounding to much like a lot of the new crap that plugs up my FM dial (I was wrong, so wrong). After opening my mind and checking out some Indie Rock albums, I settled on purchasing this album by "The Shins". I couldn't believe the strength they had with their light approach to guitars and yet still belt out some fun, sometimes enlightening, and sometimes haunting music. The first description I found of this band was that they did their music in the "tradition of the beach boys". I figured that can't be all bad, and it's not. Some 60's sounds do emit from this eleven-track debut, but coupled with the other fresh and often eclipsing sounds from this band (I'm also hearing some folk presence if ever so lightly) I don't think we are dealing with any rehash here. It's genuine. For some reason this band that came out of New Mexico as a sort of revamped project from some of the members previous band, isn't coming up on the radar much. Just as well, sometimes the best-kept secrets are worth keeping.

Are the Red Hot Chili Peppers the best of the alternative-rock bands? This reviewer (who generally thinks alternative rock is an evil corporate piece of crap) says yes. And this is a great way to get into the group, containing all the big songs (Give It Away, Under the Bridge, Suck My Kiss, Breaking the Girl, Californiacation, Scar Tissue, Higher Ground), although there is one big mistake this album makes: WHERE IS THE ZEPHYR SONG? It sure as hell was a hit - in fact, it was a big one. And I loved it, unlike most other big rock hits of 2002. I also would've appreciated Aeroplane, as well as some of the older stuff (Johnny Kick a Hole in the Sky, True Men Don't Kill Coyotes, especially Knock Me Down). But I highly recommend this album, as well as the classic rock and funk that influenced the Chili Peppers.

4-0 out of 5 stars its chili peppers, so you know its good
however, its not what it could be. its missing some notable songs, including their biggest recent hit Can't Stop. it also has some fairly obscure 'hits' like Universally Speaking. however, it is a great album. although it may seem weird to consider the Red Hot Chili Peppers rock legends, they will be elligible for the rock and roll hall of fame in less than 3 years.

There's always been something a little mysterious about Gomez. Yet no one would mistake them for a dream-pop or shoegazer act. The UK quintet relies too much on acoustic instrumentation (violin, mandolin, harmonica, etc.) and rocks too hard to qualify. In fact, they've never been part of any "scene," British or otherwise. Their debut for Dave Matthews's ATO label, after live set Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
Am a true fan and finds this album truly eclectic. My favorite track is "girlshapedlovedrug" the story is brillant...the wicked girl. I think that Gil Norton did a great job at production and it's not "Split the Difference" but How We operate stands on its own. And these guys are great live....
4-0 out of 5 stars Folk rock vocal fun!
Gomez has something for everybody on this one.Great lyrics, great music, great arranging--- hard not to like.It rocks, it's whimsical, it's emotive, it's got a beat.Really hard to classify.Track 7, Tear Our Love Apart, is my 8 year old son's favorite song.I've bought 3 more to send to friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gomezing
i saw Gomex perform live touring with this album, and although I had never heard tracks from How We Operate I went right out and bought it.I think the best track is "How We operate," by far. There is more energy packed into that one song than into most "high energy" albums. The diversity between songs just shows the wide range of musical abilities within this group. There is variation in style, composition, and musicality in this entire album. "Hamoa beach" and "Tear your Love Apart" are also amazing. This is a must-buy. ... Read more

Fans of Willy Porter, Ben Harper, and G. Love will all want to check out Jack Johnson's engaging folk- and blues-inflected pop. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson, a former surfer and film-school graduate, has a knack for acoustic ballads whose calm surfaces hide a subtle but strong lyrical undertow. "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no,'" sings Johnson on "Flake," which features crony Harper on slide guitar. Production by J.P. Plunier (who also handles Harper's recordings) is simple and uncluttered: acoustic guitar and drum tracks share the foreground with Johnson's easygoing vocals, which evoke everyone from G. Love (who recorded Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" on his Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific, as the other reviews say
How can such a seemingly simple, barely instrumented album sound so convincing, so riveting?Great lyrics, sung with perfect (nearly telepathic) intonation by Jack Johnson and great communitative playing come together to grab your attention. You can sense something transcendent, something spiritual while listening to Brushfire.Very special and highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant and light but not a keeper
I'm a big fan of acoustic-based singer/songwriter stuff, so I thought I might like Jack Johnson too. And at first I did. His music is laid back, quite catchy, softly sung, undemanding. Anybody would like it, I guess. But after a while I started to find this CD a bit annoying. When you listen over and over to something really good, it reveals things you didn't see the first few times you played it. But all that's revealed here is a rather `lite' and one-dimensional approach to songwriting and arranging. Lyrics that sound cute at first soon sound empty. It's okay on whimsical songs like `Sexy Plexi', but when he tries to be more serious it doesn't hit the mark. And you may soon tire, as I did, of the crack of the drum that accompanies every song, not to mention that one guitar lick Jack can manage and always does. The band's instrumentation is admittedly fairly minimal, but somebody like Josh Ritter or Garrin Benfield gets more variety with just a guitar and fewer notes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another Jack Johnson plus
Love the music - always relaxing and upbeat. Even my 12 year old son thinks the music is great. He really appreciates the fact that most of Jack Johnson's songs have an actual message that is common sense - something we all think and/or understand. Overall Good buy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Stuff but a bit uneven
This is an excellent album but, as a whole, its a bit uneven to listen to all at once. I'd recommend burning a few songs on a CD at a time or shuffling a few on the mp3 player.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Work!
I don't know what's more entertaining, the album or the negative reviews from indie snots bent out of shape because the "unwashed masses" are listening to this CD.
1-0 out of 5 stars The emperor has no clothes.
The Decemberists are wonderful performance art, an exercise in demonstrating just how gullible the indie crowd really is. Will they swallow a precious, pretentious, pseudo-english, neo-prog, ren-faire-reject band that delivers lines like "Meet me on my vast veranda / my sweet untouched Miranda / And while the seagulls are crying / we fall but our souls are flying" with perfectly nasal ernestness?

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely treat for Sarah fans
I am usually quite miffed when Sarah and Nettwerk decide to re-release old Sarah songs but in this case I am *very* happy! This two-disc edition of "Mirrorball" is perfect for long-time Sarah fans as it covers her first four (and best) albums and it isn't as polished as the 1999 release. The sound quality is excellent and it almost feels like being at a McLachlan concert. An excellent addition for die-hard Sarah fans!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's about freakin' time!!!
I found this CD totally by accident when out record shopping. I had to have it since I love the DVD and Sarah's more recent concert film, "Afterglow Live".

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I have to admit, when I first heard about this band and viewed their website, everything about them screamed 'cookie-cutter pop/punk/screamo band'. You know what, they might even be just that, but their album is still pretty good, and that's what really matters.
