5-0 out of 5 stars Worth The Wait
You may recall last spring Warner (or was it Rhino) was set to release a two disc Prince album named Ultimate Prince. The project was unexpectedly shelved, well a better term would be the release date was changed to TBA. As a reviewer, I had a review copy of the CD and had even posted a review, only to be told to remove the review. It was a good review too, but here is my second go round reviewing Ultimate Prince.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great compilation
"Ultimate Prince" is the latest collection of Prince hits from Warner Bros. Compared to the other 2 currently available compilations: "The Hits/The B-Sides" (1993) and "The Very Best of Prince" (2001), "Ultimate Prince" strikes a healthy middle ground in that it caters more for fans of Prince's dance/club music.
2-0 out of 5 stars Clumsy anthology
Presumably the label is trying to cater to mid-range fans who have a Prince album or two but don't want to buy them all and who want more than a single disc hits collection. The way this is laid out though is confusing at best:

If you are an artist at a crossroads/ "maturing point" in your career, it's a great idea to seek out the original musicians who played on music you adore and that inspire you greatly–it's the opposite of what Rick Rubin does with the old folks. The results, however, are often lackluster; it can just be too hard to forge a connection in a short period of time with studio dudes twenty to thirty years older than you. Chan Marshall, who took just three years between albums this time, returned to Memphis to record with many of the architects of Southern soul music at Ardent Studios on Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overproduced, but still better then most
This is an ok album, but i dont think its going to be the album that makes her go main stream or anything. She has done better with less help in the studio.
5-0 out of 5 stars Never heard of Cat Power before this one ....
... So the other reviews here, necessarily, have me baffled.
3-0 out of 5 stars A strange new direction
It's been released for a while now, so if you were going to do it, you would have done it already, but if you like her other stuff I would dissuade you from buying Cat Power's latest album "The Greatest".

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly, this album doesn't suck!
I thought this album was not going to be very good, but I gave it a chance and was extremely surprised. It does not suck, as a matter of fact, it's actually pretty good! It's growing on me, "Let it Enfold You" didn't.The addition of Heath on guitar has DEFINATELY changed this band for the better. This is worth a listen or two, it'll grow on you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Senses Fail has yet to "fail"
This album is good. I feel that I have now given it enough listens to give an accurate opinion.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still Searching for SF's Older Stuff
Okay so Senses Fail is known to scream. Scream their god damn lungs out. They're there to give you a headache but to entertain you at the same time. Their older stuff is WAY more screamo then this stuff. This new stuff is good but way different than From Depths of Dreams and Let It Enfold You. It's still good but I will have to get used to it first. I'm so used to their old stuff where all they do is scream. But SF is like one of my favorite bands, so I will make an effort to get used to them. "Everyday Is A Struggle" and "Can't be saved" are two of my favorite songs on this CD so I guess I recommend them to you. Or anybody reading this right now. So yeah, if you know Senses Fail by their older stuff, this CD is a little different because they don't scream as much, it's more guitar licks and more singing. But it's still good so I'm not complaining. So uhh go buy it. It's different, but a good different. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Not since the days of the Clash and the MC5 has rock seen such political force as in the uncompromising debut from this L.A. quartet. Expanding the hip-hop/metal style of bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage tap the spirits of vintage Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, coupled with hardcore punk intensity and Public Enemy-style grooves. "Bombtrack" opens the LP with a shot of adrenaline and singer Zack de la Rocha's infuriated chorus of "Burn, burn, yes, you're gonna burn!" The intensity doesn't let up an inch on the militant "Killing in the Name" (with the inspiring chant, "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!"), the ultrafunky "Bullet in the Head," and the engrossing "Fistful of Steel." Tom Morello combines time-honored metal guitar riffs with sounds that suggest a hip-hop scratcher over a rhythm section that simply takes no prisoners. Intelligent and aggressive, this is unimpeachably one of the best hard-rock records ever made. Read more

Ah, how can you describe Rage? I will in one word, Briliance. Its hard to belive this album came out in 1992, 14 years ago. Wow. Listening to it today, it still blows away pretty much everything on the scene today. This album started it all. It really did, RATM only released 3 albums in the 90's and they are easily one of the most powerful and influential bands from that decade.
4-0 out of 5 stars Killer Funk Metal Riffs!
4 Stars = Classic
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have.
This album is what, 14 years dated? Yet young new listeners LOVE this album. Its funky, its hard, its rebellious, full of passion. This album alone, not RATM has its place in history, is a classic already in many avid music fan collections. It was ahead of its time, it was the band's best, ultimate life effort squeezed into one album. Unfortunately they could never live up to it. Released in a time of jaded generation X, rebellious punk/undustrial movement, it GOT the recognition it deserved. Not overrated, but maybe under appreciated. There are no synthesizers, sampling of music. All the funky sounds played through REAL talent. It blows away any alternative / industrial music produced today. Even new young fans ask - where are bands like this today? There just arent, so sad. RATM, holds its legendary place is music history. Paved the way for the Linkin Parks, the LImp Bizkits, the Korn - but no one could touch RATM's style. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rare Intersection of Quality and Danceability
Since this is my first outing with Spoon, I have no way to compare it with their previous works. However, if Gimme Fiction is any indication of the quality of previous albums, I am eager to hear more of them.
5-0 out of 5 stars great, new sound
this album is a great representation of what spoon is about. great music along with fantasticly written lyrics provide a feeling of sheer uphoria to one's ears. spoons sound is somewhat like cake but different in ways as well. they are a very good band that should be getting more cred than what they are getting. some of my faves on this cd include mathematical mind, the two sides of monsieur valentine, sister jack and i turn my camera on. i would strongly recommend this cd to anyone that like alternative rock. definately money well spent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good voice, good music, bad mixing.
I like the main voice(s) and I like the music, but the voices are over powered by the music. If they turned up the voices a bit I think this would be a great album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh and innovative
I can't decide if this is happy music that sounds sad, or sad music that sounds happy. I am absolutely captivated by this cd. His haunting voice, unbelievably comforting and soothing though it's hard to understand a word of what he's singing. The instruments all blend very nicely together. It does get a little repetitive at times but oddly enough, at the end of the cd I'm craving more. Postcards From Italy is hands down the best track on the disc. But really there isn't one single song on this cd that I don't like. It's nice to come across something as catchy as this, that sounds different that the latest humdrum of our time. Cheers to this new artist. Looking forward to more!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't understand the hype
While I admit it is an interesting concept to incorporate this brass style music with an indie/rufus wainwright twist. One can't help but be bored to sleep with the same sound over and over. An ambitious undertaking yes... but unfortunately Neutral Milk Hotel was way more eclectic with the use of the brass and DID NOT OVERUSE it like beirut does. Every time I put this on I feel like I'm part of some international parade looking for a way out

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning.
If you like Goran Bregovic or Johnny Cash or Roy Orbison or David Byrne or Mostar Sevdah Reunion or Zlatne Uste, you'll like this music; if you like all of the above, you'll love it. It's that simple. Indie crooning plus Balkan brass music. How come nobody ever thought of this before? ... Read more

Editorial Review

Her intensely personal lyrics grabbed the headlines, but the bravest departure here is the way Morissette's unique vocals stand naked in the mix--a technique that drives home the painful honesty of tracks like "Right Through You," "Forgiven," and "All I Really Want." Sheryl Crow or an earthier Tori Amos are fair analogies, but Morissette is a genuine original with a rare ability to make listeners care, think, and question. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rock music's queen of hurt
Radio-friendly rock music had a new queen once Alanis Morissette stepped into the picture here. Her oft-excruciatingly personal lyrics and blazingly unique singing scored her numerous radio smashes and with her first official rock record Jagged Little Pill the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter delivers one of the best albums in music history. From its first international No. 1 smash "You Oughta Know," album Jagged Little Pill's presence became known on the charts with numerous other hit singles like "All I Really Want," "Hand In My Pocket," "You Learn," "Head Over Feet" and "Ironic."Morissette has a slight misstep here with the cooing sometimes-good-sometimes-just-so-off ballad "Perfect" and "Mary Jane," Pill's most unmemorable moments--but in the end this genuine songstress produces original and unbelievably unique rock music with real hurt and heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something everyone needs to swallow
What more can be said about Canada-born singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette? She has proven herself over and over as being one of music's leaders with her overly personal lyrics and radio-friendly beats.Jagged Little Pill is as perfect as a commercial rock record can get. It's not only hardcore and controversial, it's more importantly marketable.Every song here is a brilliant piece of art (speaking in terms of rock music, that is--like most music, it may not be everybody's choice), but more interesting is how Morissette sings it--the pain, anger and hurt come off in a wrenchingly shrill, nasally and sometimes annoyingly unique sound that's all her own.Blisteringly personal and full of angst, Jagged Little Pill is definitely something everyone should swallow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dynamic, chance taking album!LOUD!
I still have the cassette of this album (which I've had since 1995) and I plan on getting the CD soon. I bought her best of album last November.Alanis Morissette made a dynamic album that fully defines grunge and alternative rock's 6-year dominance in the 90s.Everything all clicks on here!I still like to scream when singing the chorus of You Oughta Know! And still like to turn it up every time! She's not taking no mess when she chews her man up for cheating on her in that song! This song just came out of nowhere in 1995 just as people were still playing their 1994 Hootie and the Blowfish albums way too much.A lot of this album has to be personal, especially You Learn, Hand In My Pocket, Wake Up, Forgiven, Ironic and many others. This album is strong in its rock sound, its lead guitars and full wall of sound on every cut! You Oughta even has shades of hip-hop's beats in its rock sound.I was so pleased that it won Album of the Year at the Grammys (and I didn't even watch that show!) because it broke the mold of the same kind of safe pop album that those voters like to choose (soft and sappy Diane Warren-like pop ballads and so forth). This was the LOUD album that the Grammys finally chose long after Michael Jackson's hugely succesful Thriller from the '80s!Alanis has still maintained a strong fan base and her music still sounds great with her later albums. She does the music SHE wants to do and she is winning at all counts.Jagged Little Pill will always be a favorite and a classic from me! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Saosin got it right!
For me, this album rates right up there with AFI and Rise Against's newest releases as the best albums to come out this year. The songs are very catchy and I like that Saosin doesn't fall back on trite screamo tactics that everybody else seems to be doing these days.As bummed as I was this summer when they didn't play "I can tell" at the warped tour show, they fell back into favor with this release.Lastly, I hardly ever notice drummers but this guy is unbelievable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful LP
Saosin truely proves itself to be a strong force in the music industry with its first self-titled full length release. Between the sharp guitar riffs of Justin Shekoski and Beau Burchell, to the fierce bass line of Chris Soreson, the expert drumming of Alex Rodriguez, and the wide vocal range of Cove Reber. The album truely shows off their musicianship in this long awaited album. The album moves from its post-hardcore roots (fronted by Anthony Green) in songs such as "Come Close" and back to its now mostly area-rock type feel shown in the single "Voices". The differnces between the "Translating the Name" EP and this album are immense but still are the same in many aspects. Though the band has been through various line-up changes they still manage to keep a strong focus on their music. Also despite them being on a major label they still seem to have a very loyal fanbase that stays true to the band as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Saosin goes softer, but still is good
At first, i have to be quite honest. I didnt like this cd because it was completely weak and 100% totally different from their old stuff with Anthony Green. Ever since he left the band has gone down in a direction for worse in my opinion. The guitar players can do sooo much better and the drummer is holding back beyond belief. I cant believe he doesnt even do any double bass solos, its very dissapointing compared to thier old stuff. But, like said before, this is the new Saosin. The old Saosin was one of a kind and this is the new of it. The new Saosin contains lyrics that can be understand and guitar melodies that are slow but still catchy. They are plain standard rock. Which i actually like, its a good start for a band that lost an unbelieveable singer but still gained a whole new type of music that anybody who likes rock will enjoy. ... Read more

Reconvening for a new studio project after a fifteen year hiatus can be a shortcut to a disappointing release (see: Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & the Fish, Poco, and way too many others). Edie Brickell and New Bohemians may actually be stronger now than they were with their late eighties and early nineties pair of hit albums. Brickell's lyrics mix a sense of serendipity with craftsmanship--in fact, the whole band pull off the difficult task of hiding formidable chops under casually friendly garb. Catchy hooks don't just happen, but the band's ability to roll them out without shining spotlights on them is laudable. The musical figure which opens and defines "Early Morning" shows their prowess at even ballad-paced grooves. Brickell's singing throughout is confident, capable of putting across everything from playfully dynamic playground melodies to dream-infused reveries. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Subtly beautiful and soulful.
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians was a good band that was on the verge of becoming a great one when it suddenly disbanded after its sophomore effort "Ghost of a Dog" failed to achieve the same level of commercial success as its platinum-selling debut "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars".
4-0 out of 5 stars A Welcome return...
This album is a great return to form for Edie and a nice welcome back for the New Bohemians. It's the most unpretentious and effortless record I've heard in a while. Like friends reuniting for a regular jam session the album is a display of how balancing skill and feeling make all the difference. Originally the songs didn't grab me immediately like those of 'Ghost of Dog', the album grew on me the more I listened. Edie has a way with words and the band has a way with music that while rootsy, still flaunts eclectism. From the latin percussive 'No Dinero', the closing arabesque guitars on "Wear You Down", Indian summer skies conjured by "Buffalo Ghost", The slinky funk of "Lover Take me" and "Main Line Cherry" and the great care free title track. While 'Volcano' was a good record with it's jazz leanings, it's with the New bohemians that she sounds at her best and most natural. It's music that you can enjoy driving, camping or doing just about anything. It's just fun. Welcome backEdie and New Bohemians!!!...you've been missed...

4-0 out of 5 stars Yesssss!!!
OK-I agree with the other reviewers to an extent-when did THIS happen? There certainly was no big media blitz to accompany the release of this new CD, which is probably a good thing since maybe they might be easily seen out on the road without a lot of chaos- which they seem to want to avoid anyway.

The foursome come roaring out of the blocks with their latest collection. The album's first single, "Beautiful Day," raced to the No. 1 slot on the U.K. singles charts and received a similar rapturous reception stateside. 4-0 out of 5 stars U2 Reconnects with Essential Cargo:Passion
'All That You Can't Leave Behind' is a thrilling comeback for U2.They are still high-tech, but they reinvent their sound more modestly in a manner that brings back the passion of earlier classics. The quality of the lyrics and the variety of musical endeavors, make this album a classic.
3-0 out of 5 stars Safe and Predictable U2 Pop
When All That You Can't Leave behind (ATYCLB) first hit the stores the term return to form seemed appropriate for U2. After spending the 90's experimenting and stretching their sound into at times a completely different group (see The Passengers), ATYCLB seemed like a return to the groups 80's sensibilities.

I bought this CD to complete my collection of all the new U2 CD's. U2 are such a stunning group and masterful writers of music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, this deserves every star.
I came to Bloody Valentine a little late in the game (late 90's) and I wasn't too enamoured with their other works. In fact, I had a difficult time getting into this album. I think this album is like one of those 3D puzzles where you really have to relax your eyes, or better yet, don't try and find the picture you're supposed to be looking for. Relax your brain, turn off your active listening, and then put this album on repeat. I found that in order to really get the initial experience of this album it should be on very low volume while your doing other "brainy" things. After a few hours of writing heady material, solving the world's problems, or replacing the brake pads on your car, somehow everything about Loveless will magically "click". Once I figured out how to introduce this album to people I have yet to have anyone call me back and tell me "they don't get it".

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant & Revolutionary
I've owned this album for ten years now...I can't think of a more awe inspiring cd in my collection.I relisten to it from time to time and still in 2006 it seems ahead of its time and revolutionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars You mean they have two records
So as you already know 30 Seconds to Mars have begun to burn up the airwaves as well as MTV and like-minded television stations. So much so that some people are checking out their previous release to see what else they have to offer, and they definitely don't disappoint.I got my copy last January, having already purchased A Beautiful Lie the previous September.I have to say that the old CD is just as good as the new one, even better in my opinion. That being said, the two really aren't anything alike. The only thing they have in common is that they were released by the same band, but you wouldn't know if they weren't labeled.A Beautiful Lie is geared toward the pop-rock/alt-rock audience and their self-titled album is more metal infused with a slight industrial flavor- "Capricorn [A Brand New Name]" and "Echelon".
4-0 out of 5 stars very, very surprising
30 Seconds to Mars are something of an anomaly on several levels.First of all is the matter of their frontman, one Jared Leto, who accomplishes a nearly impossible feat in that he is both an actor and musician, and exceeds in both fields. This is not entirely unheard of, since one need not look any further than William Shatner to find proof that this sort of thing is possible ;).But anyway, the band also stands out (note the use of the word band - this is not simply an outfit for Leto to sell his face to the public) in that on this, their debut album, everything sounds surprisingly well-crafted.That is not to say that it's a perfect album - it has its flaws, primary among them the fact that the creative songwriting runs out of steam for roughly a third of the album. Also irritating is the "concept" behind the record. Now I've nothing against concept albums, but when a band tries so blatantly to be thought-provoking and cryptic it ends up sounding rather pretentious and ultimately quite silly.Despite this, at certain points the lyrics actually come close to the lofty intelligence they crave, as on the songs "Edge of the Earth," "Fallen," and "End of the Beginning."Musically, the majority of this album is pretty average hard rock, though with some spacey technical influences and metal sensibilities thrown in for good measure.Highlights are "Fallen" (which features a pretty simple yet memorable drum beginning and a nice atmospheric feel for the verses, and builds to an almost alt. metal-sounding chorus), "Oblivion" (a rather addictive piece ridden with cliches but still rather well-orchestrated), the radio-friendly "Welcome to the Universe," and my personal favorite, "Echelon," complete with almost darkly romantic overtones and an epic chorus. But not all of the album is quite so listenable."93 Million Miles" begins promisingly but is marred by a chorus that lacks any real saving grace, melodic or otherwise."Year Zero" drives its simplistic melody into the ground and then adds insult to injury by piling on the standard-issue spoken-word concept jargon. And then we have "Buddha for Mary," which seems to be a perennial favorite among listeners of this album. While not terrible, I just can't get into this song for several reasons.First of all the conceited lyrics and their even more pompous and out of place symbolism are pretty terrible. When you couple this with the fact that this song is essentially a diluted and very thinly-veiled attempt to write a song akin to Tool's "Reflection," you get what I consider the low point of the CD.The remaining songs are all decent and reasonably memorable, especially the stop-start pattern of "The Mission" and the chorus of "Capricorn (A Brand New Name)."Despite all my criticism, this is a surprisingly solid release.Though the general tone of this review may seem negative (as it does to me upon looking at it), I can't help but like this CD.Sure it can be grating at times (mixing formulaic melodies and then trying to sound complex through the use of white noise or high-concept lyrics has never really worked), but it can also be beautiful. As such, it is worthy of four stars, and a place in every open-minded rock fan's collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Debut.
The reason that I know this is one of the best albums I've ever heard is because I bought it in 2002 and to this day I'm still listening to the album at least three or four times a week. This album has such an epic and immense feeling to it..almost as if every song could take you away to a new world or galaxy (Perhaps this is why they chose the name 30 Seconds To Mars). The lyrics are extremely well written and the songs will get stuck in your head for days. You can tell from listening to the first couple songs that there's more then enough different influences in this work..yet at the same time this album sounds nothing like anything else. The only thing I could honestly say almost sounds like this album is Deadsy's "Commencement" , another masterpiece. I'd have to say that the standout tracks for me are "Echelon" , "Welcome To The Universe" , "The Mission" , and "Edge of the Earth" . The only songs that sort of lag a bit are the last two..but the rest of the album is so amazing that it's forgiveable . Definently pick this one up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This cd is amazing and gets better with each listen. "Banquet" and "Helicopter" are the hit tracks but "This modern love" stands out as the most beautiful track along with "Blue Light" and "Little Thoughts." With the fast guitar work and Cure-like lyrics, this cd is a must buy for any rock and roll fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Personal Favorite Album of '05
Bloc Party has a unique style of music that I personly find very amusing. When the singer hits some chords that I've never heard before It sends shivers down my spine everytime I hear them. Hear is a list of tracks and ratings:
5-0 out of 5 stars Hype killers beware!
Hype can be a very bad thing: all too often I am disappointed. This album was hyped; Bloc Party took their sweet time getting it out there, teasing listeners with delicious EPs and forcing the murmurs to swell to a quiet uproar.Well, for once, an album lives up to the hype.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite a classic (but getting close)
My first experience with Ratatat was an unforgettable performance when the duo, Evan Mast and Mike Stroud, took to the stage when touring with Mouse On Mars.Never having heard of them before I had no idea what to expect. Just two guys, their guitars, and a drum machine, yet I haven't been more pleased with an opening act like the energy Ratatat put onstage. Needless to say I was a convert by the time they had finished their set, and I was eagerly anticipating the next studio release.
5-0 out of 5 stars More Fat Beats From RATATAT
Ratatat's second album Classics, is full of energy, but mostly great instrumentation. The music is yet again all synthesizers, drum machines, guitar and bass. But this time it seems that the duo has grow up a little, with a much more mature follow up to the very good self titled album. This album has a lot more substance to it, and is faster as a whole. I got to see them on their Classics Tour and live you can see all the energy that each song has.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a "classic"
"If you like Explosions in the Sky, Depeche Mode, and Air's "Moon Safari" than buy this album."I never heard of the band until it was recommened to me from the record store teen and the guy was right on.This is a cool album, very creative and by far one of my best purchases in several years and I own lots of cd's. It lacks the gimmicky pop sound often with electronic music and is not the constant repeating of a looped melody: this keeps the songs fresh after many listenings. This album goes to the top of my list as best of 2006 and will certainly be a Christmas gift for friends and family. If the band continues on this path and doesn't get lazy (like Air and Royksopp) there is little doubt they will be very well known. The next Depeche Mode?? Only time will tell, but this album is promissing and a good addition. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Make Damn Sure
If you happen upon the video for MakeDamnSure and the sound on your television is off, then you would think that the band Taking Back Sunday is ripping one hell of a energetic and explosive tune. They look like the MC5 in the video, jumping off amps, winging guitars around there head, looking serious as all hell. But if your like me and you turn the sound back on, your going to hear that it's another whiny and droning effort from the emo machine designed to make kids in high school feel self important.
3-0 out of 5 stars ugh
TBS is my favorite band, no matter what. Tell all your friends and where you want to be were amazing cds with amazing songs. Everything about TBS was perfect. I was really pumped for Louder Now and when I finally got it I was really dissapointed, yes their sound is different but thats not really the problem. The songs just didn't have that special something that the other two albums had. I do however very much enjoy "ill let you live", "error operator", "whats it feel like to be a ghost", and "make damn sure"
4-0 out of 5 stars Slightly Dissapointed...
Yes, I have to be honest, I'm slightly dissapointed with this album, yet I'm giving it 4 stars. My reason for being "slightly "dissapointed, is that the album really starts off with a bang, but then drops of a little. The first 3 songs are so strong and sound so amazing that the rest of the album really just can't keep up. What It Feels Like To Be A Ghost, Liar, and MakeDamnSure, are just fantastic songs, some of the best work that TBS has done. For those three alone, Louder Now is worth buying.

Editorial Review

Conor Oberst is running on dangerous ground: getting his first Dylan comparisons at age 12, frolicking with Winona Ryder, releasing two separate albums at once. Didn't he learn anything from Ryan Adams's mistakes? It's a good thing he can write such haunting, intimate songs. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Trying Too Hard to Be Clever
This is a problem I've had for some time with Conor Oberst, front-man of Bright Eyes. He is undoubtedly, perhaps even unusually, talented as a young songwriter. At the age of 13, he was released his own debut album on cassette and had starte
