Editorial Review

Although this band is largely responsible for defining the circa 1990 rave culture, their music is far removed from the bass-heavy electronica usually associated with dance clubs. Ten songs on this album are characterized by lazy tempos, groovy bass hooks, and artfully simple percussion tracks which interact perfectly to form smooth, danceable beats. The rhythmic foundation is further accented by tasteful guitar licks and restrained keyboard parts. Their lyrical content tends to be a little dark, even seedy for exstacy fueled dance parties. The flat, nearly spoken vocal arrangements mesh with the rest of the musical stew. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Groovy Manchester eccentric funk with soulful backup
This album will always be near and dear to me. It came out during my identity-forming teens and it hooked me immediately. Sean Ryder is not a great singer but he's a great lyricist and with the awesome music and backup vocals, it *works*. I love the play on Donovan - "sun shines brightly from my arsehole, today" and "Bob's Yer Uncle" has to be the sexiest song I've ever heard. It reminds me of Pan in that painting with all the maidens. It's funny that expression has little to do with the song - makes me wonder if it's an inside joke. Just about everyone I've met likes this album. I would give definitely give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrift store corner of the world
I picked up this record secondhand for next to nothing in the basement of The United Methodist Church over there on Verbena Avenue. God's benison go with you Pastor Gainus Sikes, your gaff's a goldmine. There it was in any case in a plastic basin with, of all things, a Kenny Rogers cassette. Just the tape too, no cover. Those Salford scallywags almost leapt right into my hands out of sheer terror. That's half off today, said a perfectly dressed little old lady, we're having a sale. Half off in a thrift shop, I said. Sold, I said. I very nearly galloped back to my hut. I'd heard only good things about, but had never actually listened to, Pills & Thrills and while I was gearing up to be suitably impressed I don't believe I was in any way prepared for the frankly colossal dose of high-grade wang doodle delivered by this trippy little disk. I even managed somehow to listen to it out of order the first time, starting off with Holiday which is I think the second last song but what did I care, I was already on the trolley by the time I'd noticed. Ever since then I can't hear Holiday without experiencing an irresistible urge to drift off to sleep in a shrubbery for a week or two. And would you just look at Mister Intergalactic Laxative himself in there too! I haven't thought about old Cosmic Bananas since I can't exactly remember. You just don't lose with this album. I would complain that it's on the short side if it wasn't such a sure sharkey to play on repeat--I've had this sucker on for literally days at a stretch. But eventually I had to get up and go to work. Happy Mondays everybody.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still twistin' our melons, 15 years on, man
Let me start off by saying that Happy Mondays' "Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches" is one of best dance records of the last 25 years. With that said, it is also one of the most defining of its period. The Madchester genre and is one of the most well documented, so I won't go into much on the subject, but out of all the excess and drug fueled controversy that came out of that era, this was the album that showed the best of the time. Those looking for more serious stuff from "The Stone Roses" or "The Charlatans", you are barking up the wrong tree. The guys of Happy Mondays' only know how to party, and they do it twenty four hours a day.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent EP
For those starved and still pining for a follow up to Loveless, the EP/Single Tremolo may be as close to it as we'll ever get.The four songs included here are, for lack of a better word, excellent."To Here Knows When" is the same version found on Loveless, only with a different ending, a better ending in fact - feathery and ephemeral.B-sides "Swallow" and "Honey Power" are worth adding this EP to your collection alone. The latter is 4:33 of My Bloody Valentine-goodness."Moon Power" is an oddity, a melange of interesting noise. If anything Tremolo is a bitter sweet reminder of just how breathtakingly gifted My Bloody Valentine was.Buy it.Download it.Just hear it.Allow yourself to fall under MBV's beautiful thrall once again.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm a penny-pincher (so sue me).
TREMOLO is a little better then the EP GLIDER, but it still feels a little expensive at seven or eight dollars. This EP clocks in at slightly under twenty minutes, and one of the songs on this disc is an almost exact version of a track from LOVELESS (it has an extended ending, which is pretty sweet, but besides that, the tracks are identical). If you own LOVELESS, there is no real reason to buy this EP (unless you're a hardcore Valentine fan such as myself). You'll only be getting about 15 minutes of new songs, and although they ("Swallow" and "Honey Power" are among the better tracks) are better then any of the songs off of the EP GLIDER, they're still below anything on LOVELESS or ISN'T ANYTHING.Don't get me wrong, this EP is excellent, it's just not worth the price.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loveless: The Lost Songs
If you've just gotten in to My Bloody Valentine with "Isn't Anything" and their classic "Loveless", the Tremolo EP is absolutely one of the best places to look afterwards for new songs. Coming off like a series of lost songs that didn't make it onto "Loveless", Tremolo is slightly more accessible (albeit just as beautiful) than their albums, and contains the superior version of the song "To Here Knows When" (the outro to this version fits the song FAR better than the distorted heavy metal one on "Loveless")

5-0 out of 5 stars I waited .... and was rewarded.:)
The other reviewers have eloquently stated exactly what I would say so I would only be paraphrasing them.I'm actually numb, waiting until Tuesday when I can hear new Kate songs. It's like a dream.I put her above all others (ok, maybe equal with Annie Lennox) in the pantheon of Goddesses, and I CANNOT wait to have more.KOTM is a great song. What you get from Kate is never expected, but unique.Sadly, American radio is terrible and will probably never play it.Thankfully, we have the internet and other areas to listen to music these days.I know there are others out there that are faithfully awaiting this album, and if this single is any indication, we are in for quite the treat.Welcome back, Kate darling. We missed you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The nervous wait paid off
I was so nervous as I tuned in to BBC Radio (all the way from here in Bangkok via the internet) to hear the first play of King of the Mountain. We Bush fans have been craving new material for 12 years. For the first couple of years after The Red Shoes we had to be content with an occasional track here and there ('Mna Na Eiran, Rocket Man and all those bootlegged demo tracks) but when oh when was Ms Bush going to put little Bertie into creche and get on with her real task at hand? Well here in late 2005 she finally did it. Six weeks after hearing KOTM for the first time I still love it; the creepy, creeping beginning which builds up to an almost terrifying climax with wind whistling, ghosts howling, and thankfully, Bush at her dramatic best. Now comes the agonizing wait for Aerial, and the knowledge that once I've listened to it, I won't be hearing anything else from Ms Bush until 2023. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A VIOLATION OF ALL WE HOLD SACRED
Why must Mark E. continue to torment us so? The only band to lay more "music" to vinyl than the Grateful Dead, and with no end in sight. No musician is more responsible for the ongoing violation of Mother Gaia and the mobilization of vast armies to secure resources to make more records: why do you think the UK is in Iraq? Enlightening us to The Monks is not enough! Any two-bit Mancunian ink-stained wretch could transmogrify rock n' roll long after Manchester United is forgotten. For Allah's sake, the dude doesn't play a guitar and is turning into a hunchback! When will the sonic rapture cease? And who decided to defile the memory of Nudie Cohen? Go ahead. Be a yob. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Music of Its Kind!
Saw them on October 4, 2005 (My Birthday) and I was totally blown away. Upon leaving the venue, I made up my mind to purchase "WAKE" as well as "Into the Labyrinth". Both were on my shopping list and I purchased both and don't regret a minute of it! My favorite songs on this collection are: YULUNGA, HOW FORTUNATE THE MAN WITH NONE, THE CARNIVAL IS OVER, RAKIM, SANVEAN, I CAN SEE NOW, AMERICAN DREAMING, THE HOST OF SERAPHIM, and CANTARA. Disc 2 features the more "known & loved" songs. On the contrary, Disc 1 features songs which I only know 3/4 of. For those who aren't aware of this remarkable duo & their equally remarkable band...you MUST buy "WAKE". It's definitely worth owning because of the quality of sound & the selection of tracks. Every track will move you, mind, body & soul.

Editorial Review

In 2000 Oasis wisely dispensed with theatrics and concentrated on being the world's greatest stadium-sized pub-rock band. And so, with just three mammoth video walls in tow, they toured the world. Big as the video screens were, however, the band's straight-ahead rock and Liam Gallagher's mouth were even bigger, and contributed much to the drama, tension, and entertainment of the tour behind Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Hello, Manchester!!!"
It was July 2000, Oasis played Wembley Stadium in London for two nights in a row. The heat was on, the expectations were high, and the thousands of fans that crammed the famous soccor field were "mad for it!" Everything was going good; Oasis were and still are the biggest band in England with a timeless influence on most of the bands coming out of America and Europe today, and they were to take the stage by storm, but there was one too many problems: Liam had just broken up with his then wife actress Patsi Kensit, was seriously drunk, and Noel wasn't talking to him. The effects of all of the above are evident on this recording.
2-0 out of 5 stars Well done (to the crowd)
Ive always been a big fan of oasis but they really let themselves down here. This was an opportunity to perform a memorable, energetic and musical show, well it was certainly memorable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lay off the cigarettes, Liam
Instrumentally, Oasis is still a tight band, and Noel's vioce still sounds good, (his cover version of Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My" is a highlight) but damn Liam really sounds like he just woke up after a rough night. They rush their way through "Wonderwall" like they're bored with it,and their version of Champagne Supernova also sounds weak voiced. Now some times the ragged effect does work, versions of "Stand by Me", "Live Forever" and "Cigarettes and Alcohol" are still pretty rousing.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Am Mark E. Smith
Though to some extent the Fall are a "single's band" they still have put out a lot of solid albums. Owning all of them might bankrupt you so besides any of their greatest hits albums (as long as they focus on older material) this is the place to start. This Nation's Saving Grace sounds like a monologue on everything from Margaret Thatcher era England (Spoilt Victorian Child)to the leader of one of the group's greatest influences, Can (I am Damo Suzuki) over angular post punk/funk rhythms.I prefer it over Gang of Four as This Nation's Saving Grace is not guilty of being didactic but instead is a chunk of bile and vitriol that must have been on Steve Albini's turntable more than once. I don't know whether the current bunch of post punkers from Williamsburg that slavishly imitate this sound are a good or bad thing. However, the Fall, despite line up changes are still a solid band and This Nation's Saving Grace is their most focused musical statement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it anyway! (If you own it already you shouldn't really be here)
Good solid Fall. Fine stuff. But... well, you know. YOU know! Popular, commercial Fall. Some danceable numbers. But it doesn't live with you as long as many other Fall pieces. Maybe it's just a bit too.. clean. Good album for Fall newcomers perhaps. But it isn't as abrasive, unsettling or amusing as so much other material. John Peel was a bit put out that so many (students probably) had voted "LA" into the festive 50 that year. I wonder why.

4-0 out of 5 stars Could've been amazing
I don't give it five stars only because Constellation Of The Heart, Why Should I Love You and You're The One are inexcusable pieces of garbage that i don't know why she allowed them to be in the final cut of the album! The rest of the songs are good, others are brilliant, but she had a wonderful conceptual idea explained in the title song The Red Shoes and didn't do much to make it interesting. We all know she was going through hell at the time, but it usually helps to make great, stirring, mindblowing records! Still, it becomes better with each listening (except the ones i mentioned).

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Red Shoes
Of all the Kate Bush albums I currently own, this is my favorite.Rubberband Girl is a fantastic tribute to trying to be adaptable to life and changes which most of us don't do well and Kate apparently would like to do a better job of as well.My next favourite on this album is Eat the Music, with it's fantastic back up and endearing lyrics that encourage you to swallow your music just like the fruit of life it truly is.My biggest disappointment on this album is Big Stripey Lie, but is truly a Kate song as it discusses the way a lie weaves in and out of reality.Personally, I am not fond of the music with Big Stripey Lie, but others may love it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Her only disappointing release
I am so accustomed to raving about Kate Bush's recordings that it really pains me to write this one. This CD, while not horrible, is very disappointing. It seems she got sick of making interesting, quirky music and decided to just make some money with this one. It is very commercial, ridiculously over-produced and just could not have come from her heart. If you are a fan, you already own this. If you are looking for an introduction to Kate's music, buy "Hounds of Love". That CD is her masterpiece; "Red Shoes" should be veiwed as an asterisk in her amazing career. ... Read more

I stumbled upon this movie "The Whale Rider" one fetid afternoon on PBS TV. It is a powerful movie that moves you. At least it did me. A movie such as this comes along but rarely. Tears welled up in my eyes towards the end. The music is just as stirring. The old Maori chants are so similar to the chants of some tribes in India. A lost world now gone from us. I am glad someone made a movie on this theme. That it acquired such a haunting soundtack contributes to its universal success. I highly recommend the movie and the CD, in that order. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brooding and beautiful
To me, Asleep in the Back is one of the few albums that doesn't reveal a cynical formula after repeated listening. It is atmospheric, creative, intelligent and gorgeous. Too bad their follow-up efforts are not as cohesive. I still believe that one day they will blow my mind again.

5-0 out of 5 stars besti have bought in years
i heard about twenty seconds of track one ( any day now ) on an episode of nip/tuck, then spent several hours trying to track down the name of the band. i ordered the cd , anticipating one or two good songs, but after listening to the entire cd , i fell in love. i havent felt so emotionally connected to music since i was in high school, about thirteen years ago. after listening to the cd several times certain tracks grabbed ahold of me, namely #'s 1 , 4 , 6 , and 10.then i began to castigate myself for not knowing about this band before.they combine all of the best elements of pink floyd, radiohead, therapture, and something else that sets them apart from any other band that ive heard . i would reccommend this cd to anyone who craves emotioal , evocative music that makes you feel again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best catch of the fish !
I have been a die-hard Marillion fan since thier misplaced chilhood album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not quite Misplaced Childhood, But close...
I have always loved Marillion's music as an escape. The storytelling of the songs and the incredible musicianship have the ability to take you away from whatever may be kicking around in your head. Yes, I am partial to the group's work with Fish over Steve Hogarth - who does a good job in his own right. Fish's lyrics and the way he sings them make you feel the emotion, whether it's anger or sorrow or anything in between. Musically this album probably isn't as diverse as some of their earlier work, but the playing is superb and does not disappoint.
5-0 out of 5 stars 1987, Fish bows out with "heart on his sleeve" classic ...
Almost 20 years ago since this classic appeared in 1987. The first thing I heard from it was the single "Incommunicado" which I really enjoyed. The album appeared a few weeks later and at the time I really didn't understand a lot of the background about the album, I was however struck by the emotion of the lyrics and Fish's singing was as good as I had ever heard it. There were a number of very emotionally moving songs so beautifully sung by Fish and played by the band (Steve Rothery - Guitar, Mark Kelly - Keyboards, Ian Mosley - Drums and Pete Trewavas - Bass (who would also join up with Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Neal Morse (Spock's Beard) and Roine Stolt (Flower Kings) to form a superb "sideline" band called "Transatlantic" in 2001)).

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible
Slowdive is mainly known for their classic "shoegaze" albums "Just For a Day," "Souvlaki," and the less widely heard "Pygmalion."Great as they are, to my ears the band's early EP's contain their best music, and this compilation is the closest most people are ever going to get to those rare discs unless they're willing to spend a fortune on e-bay for the originals or can track down the recent import releases of "Just For a Day" and "Souvlaki" which contain all of their EP releases, plus the Peel Sessions, on bonus discs.Their early sound is heavier, with more reliance on overdriven guitars, controlled feedback, and occasional forays into beautiful, uncontrolled noise than their later stuff. Those who find their studio albums to be a little too soft and subdued will find little to complain about when listening to songs like "Slowdive" "Avalyn I" "Albatross" "So Tired" and the two versions of "Golden Hair" contained here. Not that you're getting speed metal. What you are getting is the most molten, blissed-out, wall of noise, floating-on-a-cloud sounds this side of heaven.Worth the price, in my opinion, for the first disc alone.Get it even if you have their full-length studio albums.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blue skied n'. . .
I love all things shoegazing and, indeed, Slowdive perfected the sound. MBV might have technically started the engine (in some ways) but Slowdive really did it justice with lush, lush harmonies and gauzy, dream-like guitars and keys. All else under the moniker "shoegaze" is merely a shadow of their sound. That said this collection is a great overview of the band. (The one caveat here would be the exclusion of "Primal" from "Just For a Day". Even though the album wasn't as critically successful as "Souvlaki Space Station", "Primal", Ibelieve, is the ideal shoegaze form. . .but no matter. . .)I do think that there is too much reliance on using the studio material from--especially their first two--full-length LPs. This is most prevalent on the second of the two-disk set. I would have liked more b-sides and rare material, but overall--and especially if you need to invest in one Slowdive album as an introduction--this is an excellent gem. Beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good collection
Far too many "best of" compilations have a few of the bands hits and a disproportionate number of tracks from later, less popular albums that nobody really likes (perhaps in a futile attempt to persuade people to buy those albums). This collection definitely seems to have been put together by a fan of Slowdive, as it features most of their classics (almost the entire Souvlaki album is here) and quite a few obscurities and rarities.Admittedly, in Slowdive's short career there were very few tracks that aren't worthy of inclusion on a "best of" compilation :)

4-0 out of 5 stars I've got your number...
I bought this a while back, and just found it buried in my iTunes. The guy at the record store said it is Radiohead without the paranoia. I thought that was funny.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great songs, but as a whole it's weak
The CD is worth the price for Ribcage, Fugitive Motel and Not a Job. However, the rest of the songs sound like they were thrown together at the last minute: like filler songs...the songs are not as strong as they are on Asleep in the Back and Leaders of the Free World.

4-0 out of 5 stars Elbow defines what british rock should be...
Maybe one of the most brilliant british groups today!! Elbow defines what british rock should be...listen very carefully the third track ("Fugitive Motel") so beautifully crafted, full of passion and melancholic tenderness. Next we have "Snooks (Progress Report) bringing a fabulous intricate bass rhythm and a scary chorus in despair, also we cannot forget the harmonium-like melody of "Switching off"... Come on, these fellows are thousand times better than Coldplay or Starsailor, but unfortunetely they haven't any hype movement around them, have they???

5-0 out of 5 stars Radiohead at Their Finest
I really think singles are overpriced. However, back in my radiohead fanaticism days (i still love them, but have since branched out to other bands as well), i was determined for a while to buy every recorded breath that radiohead had released.I started buying these singles up when they were $30 for three songs, and for the most part, never regretted it.This particular single is not only the finest song collection radiohead has ever released, I believe it's the best music that Radiohead is CAPABLE of releasing. There is magic in this three-song set that is indescribable without listening to it.All three songs are fairly slow-paced, and walk a fine balance between being awestruck by the possibilities of life and being tormented by the thought of one's own demise. While you could probably download these songs in fifteen minutes, however you get them, get them, and listen to them in this order over and over. This is radiohead's finest moment.Better than all six of their studio albums, better than the live album, better than the airbag ep, the itch ep, or the My Iron Lung ep (which takes a distant second), and better than the dozen other singles i own.If you like radiohead, this is the perfect place to start your collection, or, even better, the perfect place to end it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Street Spirt (Fade Out): A true Radiohead classic. If you haven't heard this song, you're really missing out. Easily one of the ten best songs the band has ever done. I'm don't think it needs to be described; just know that it's amazing. 5/55-0 out of 5 stars I'd give this 6 stars if i could
its official, this is one the best singles i have ever heard. period. Street Spirit has that really deep sounding acoustic/electric guitar line that gives me chills. It took time to make me fully appreciate it, but when it hit me, BAM! This song is great for when you're feeling depressed.Read more

Editorial Review

This 1984 release set the pace for the band's career, helped define the tone of the 4AD label, and opened the door for a genre that includes Delirium, Deep Forest, and Enigma. While much less dense and textural than more recent DCD, this album begins the group's study of combining global rhythms and instrumentation from various musical eras with contemporary sounds. Here they explore the somewhat Gothic electronic and rock instrumentation of post-punk European pop. Featuring the lush, sonorous vocals of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, this is a dark, mysterious, and compelling release. Fans of later works will not be disappointed; newcomers will find this groundbreaker a good place to meet Dead Can Dance. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Started with "Aion" and "Into the Labyrinth" so this is probably not the definitive work for me...
I love "Dead Can Dance" any way you slice it.They really gave birth to the world-beat fusion music from which Enigma and Cocteau Twins sprang. My introduction to the group was at a later stage in their development. "Labyrinth" for me was the definitive CD.Would probably have said something different if I had heard this CD first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Primal
The DCD debut sounds almost nothing like its successors, but it in many ways betters them all.The production is of the time - - heavily chorused bass, a drum machine, echoey guitars and voice (and everything else) - - but the album even today transcends the time.Along with the early Cocteau Twins and Xymox (er, Clan Of . . .) it defined the 4AD ethos and spawned a lot of mimics. But there is something primal about this album.Tracks like "A Passage In Time'; "Threshold"; "Fortune"; the beautiful, haunting, (and oceanic) "Ocean" - - there still is nothing out there sounding quite like them.Beautiful cover, too.Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard created a masterpiece the first time out, and if you can get past this one there are some great ones to follow. The CD reissue appends the album's successor, THE GARDEN OF ARCANE DELIGHTS EP (but not its distinguished cover) and it's just as good, particularly "Carnival Of Light" with Gerrard's soaring vocals, and "In Power We Trust The Love Advocated" with its shimmering keyboards and Perry's Jim Morrison-like intonation. It all still astounds.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a welcome, appreciated work that may be problematic for some
Dead Can Dance's debut self-titled album has elements of a partnership still finding voice, and the great promise of things to come. The primary refreshing element here was that the group was not afraid to experiment, and unlike many post-punk or natal-gothic bands, was not afraid of polished vocals informed by both polyphony and plainchant. In addition the band's use of unfamiliar instruments, particularly with percussion, is also a welcome departure from the narrow constraints of independent and DIY music of the early 80s.

Well, whatever clots your pudding. For those interested in the music beyond the personality and its fetishes, this is certainly exhaustive. The good thing is it's Kate and not Tori Amos. This is as fully realized and inclusive a collection you'd have from anybody. Somebody send Neil Young a copy.
