4-0 out of 5 stars Friday Night Rock
There are at least twenty geographical locations with flourishing music scenes; New York City just happens to be the current leader. With an ever-growing list of bands, one would almost want to move to the Big Apple just for the music scene. Mostly consisting of post-punk, no wave, and garage rock revival, it's hard to find someone who doesn't advocate one of these bands as being the next best thing since soft toilet seats. With time, I believe The Rogers Sisters will find themselves nestled somewhere in the middle of quite a few of these acts. This Brooklyn trio is playing some fierce party music with overflowing spoonfuls of B-52's, ESG, and Boy's Don't Cry-era Cure. Hell, they even do a nice rendition of The Cure's song, "Object."5-0 out of 5 stars fun and good
gotta love the rogers sisters. a great band to see live. the bass player is a maniac and the lead singer is cuter than a bug's ear. i have a crush on her. asside from that, their music keeps you moving and wanting to hear more. 'purely evil' is the best cramps cover i ever heard...!

4-0 out of 5 stars Junkmedia.org Review - Silly, sweet and sick
The Rogers Sisters must be fun in concert, because their latest album, Purely Evil, bounces from wall to wall with sassiness, left-wing lite politics and a sense of new wave style.Read more

I got this CD yesterday and I can't stop listening to it. Yes, it's all in Japanese, and there are only six songs, but who cares?song 1, Muscle Body Ecstasy is definately a favorite. The music is kind of Punk rock-ish pop intertwined with 60's gogo style stuff.Awesome CD. I highly reccomend it ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow... I can't believe this hasn't rated higher
I think this is a really awesome cd from start to finish. Yes, I suppose if you were hoping for an entire album sounding like Maps then maybe it is a bit disappointing but the amazing energy and raw vocals make this a very sustainable orgasm of an album. I mean, I like to f*** to this. I've never heard their other material but I am so deeply impressed and turned on by this effort that I'm seeing there next show pretty soon and if they're good live i'll definately buy their other records.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good edition but not good price
this album is a great upgrade from the u.s. edition but hard to follow up on price for the matter and the bonus tracks already appear on their single c.d. "date with the night" so mainly this is a backup if you can't find the single but otherwise a good album for alternative tastse maps is a solid run and hit song while date with the night is just a screech fest till mainly y control gives ou a chill (mainly from the promo video) and to top it off pin is just a bump bump bump beat track this c.d. is not a solid grunge album mainly to play on like lounge or whatever...

3-0 out of 5 stars Y-Control... or Lost Control?
It seems as though the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have gone from super-original with "Maps," to just another rotten band, uninspired and drained of creativity. Karen O seems to have a nice, controlled voiced in "Maps" but sometimes, in her other songs, you just want to plug your ears. I don't actually have this CD, but I've heard nearly all of the songs on it and they're nothing like "Maps." Don't get me wrong, the songs are good. In particular, I like "Maps", "Date With the Night", "Rich", "Y-Control", and "Black Tongue", but like someone has already said, if you're buying this CD for "Maps" and hoping the other songs are just as good, don't buy it. I think of the other songs as a softer kind of Distillers song, if you know who the Distillers are. If you enjoy the Distillers but want something you can understand a bit better then this CD is great for you. ... Read more

My fave by Make Up. A truly godly singles comp. It gets a round of applaw... The first five tracks alone make this worth the price.
3-0 out of 5 stars Make Up's eccentric compilation
'I Want Some' is a 21 song compilation of Make Up's first several releases, avant-garde, brash, with a sound wound-up like a ball of rubberbands. Just think a more funkier sounding Can without the experimentalism, a touch of The Velvet Underground's meandering cyclical style, the lo-fi sounds of early Pavement, and any garage-rock band from the 70's. The Can comparisons don't end there as Ian Svenonious' vocals resemble the strained rants of Malcolm Mooney. Alright, we're not talking weighty subject matter here with such lyrical gems like 'We're having a baby and what are we gonna do?' and 'Should I keep my motorcycle grey?' But the underlying DIY-ish sincerity in the vocals (almost like a soulful take on punk) is an interesting compliment to the fusion of the avante-garde, garage-rock, and rhythmic grooves of funk. Svenonious won't exactly be hailed as the next Bob Dylan, but along with tight songs, energy and tension, there are also some interesting and creative twists in the music. James Brown meets Krautrock. Who would've thought the combination would work.

I have a friend, Slammer, that insists listening to Make-Up gets you laid. You really can't put this album on when you are chillin with a bunch of dudes. But that's hardly a reason to let it pass. There is only one word to describe this music, and it is "hip."It's on in the background of that party that you never thought you'd get invited to.Where the furniture and art work makes you want to go back to your house and redecorate, and you're embarassed of the clothes you're wearing. There was one of those old tv sets that's a fish tank now there. But when you buy it for yourself, you are on the way to being in the cool club. And it will blow you away when you open it up and read. The Gospel yeh-yeh, what, manefesto? On their debut, the Willowz didn't exactly come across as shy. Sure, the Anaheim quartet may be young in age (drummer Alex Nowicki is still in his teens), but they're bursting with the kind of confidence that takes some bands years to attain. 3-0 out of 5 stars Some talent here
I can understand people hating the singer of this group, but for some reason I did not. He sounds like Billy Corgan on helium, screeching and caterwauling with bristling energy. There are a few good songs (brevity being a good thing in several instances). If you enjoy the White Stripes then I think you'll enjoy this, so open your wallet, get out your credit card and "Add to Cart".

5-0 out of 5 stars Since when is a new direction a bad thing?
Upon playing this album for the first time, with no major expectations, I was pleasantly surprised with the new tracks. Sure, it might not be quite as raw and repetative at their debut album (which is a decent album, and I would recommend listening to that one first if you are unfamiliar with the band) however, the Willowz managed to reinvent their style and sound with Talk in Circles, and I can't understand why people would think that its a bad thing. I mean, since when was there a rule in music that you have to wait 4 or 5 albums until you're allowed to experiment with new ideas. The whole point of music is to write what feels right at the time. If that means taking your songs in a new direction with new ideas, more f***ing power to ya! If you are looking to buy CDs from artists who are going to rehash the same sh*t album after album, then go buy a Strokes CD. But I can understand why Talk in Circles is already receiving such harsh criticism. This album just wasn't made for those with short attention spans. You really need to sit and listen to the songs with an open mind and try to grasp/understand them before you can come to any conclusions. Yea the singer is off key at parts, but thats just the style of the music. You might as well say picasso was a sh**ty painter because he didn't paint perfect little straight lines...perfection isn't exactly what makes music enjoyable. Look at Seline Dion. She sings in key, but her songs are musical chinese water torture!
1-0 out of 5 stars Willowz ... are you kidding me?
This album is a failed attempt to get in the hipster dumbass club. 20 tracks of pretenious self involved crap. There actually are a couple decent songs, but it also might be good if it was their 4th or 5th album, you when bands go to the desert to find themselves. They just re invented themselves after being a band for about one year, when they should have stayed true to their roots. If you want to hear a good Willowz record, buy the first one "Willowz s/t".

So what does a grunge band sound like in 1998? It still sounds dirty, but the dirt is arrived at by better technology and a bigger budget. 4-0 out of 5 stars Superfuzz Bigmuff meets Since We've Become Transluscent
i see this as the transition album between old mudhoney and new mudhoney. half the songs are heavier, thicker, and more like the 1989 mudhoney. the rest of the songs are faster, poppier, like the new.
5-0 out of 5 stars greatest grunge band is still going!!!
it seems mudhoney have grown up. this band used to be content to kick out the 3 chords and rock. one of the pinnacle live bands of the nineties, THEY put on a rock show. this album seems mature due to the fact that they have experimented with different distortion sounds. steve turner cranks out some wicked good riffs and with a little diversity (the country meets rock of "real low vibe" is aamzing) this album is like punk meets grunge meets the blues (maybe grunge and stevie ray vaughn?)5-0 out of 5 stars An unheard classic
This album is amazing. For starters, the album is properly produced with a famous producer and a big budget. This was to be Mudhoney's commercial breakthrough- the album was to make Mudhoney a great rock band(not just a grunge one) but it didn't happen and a year after this was released the band were dropped by Reprise records. The criminally poor sales of this album were caused not least by the accusations by critics and fans that this album was a sellout from the bands old and dreaded grunge label into more classically rotated rock. This is by no means their most hardcore album it is a mature, postgrunge album and Mudhoneys last ditch attempt to prevent themselves dying with grunge- and they should not have died because forget about grunge for a moment, this is one of the finest rock'n'roll albums I have ever heard.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Binge drinking from a nasty strain of something.......
This is to me the sound of the wide blue yonder, of the horizon stretching on forever, of white line fever of finally arriving somewhere and finding out it's worse than where you just left. This CD is not one you will play every day (eventually). It is however one which will probably always scare/provoke or affect you in some way. Even if only to hope that Gareth Liddiard and Co haven't actually lived these songs. Like watching a comet go overhead, get a glimpse now before they burn out. Perhaps one of the few truly original lyric writers left out there. Buy.

At first listen these guys sound a lot like a lousy garage band until the moment when it hits you that what you are hearing is purposeful and monumental.Without going too much into detail, lets just say that for any fans of less-emo Sunny Day Real Estate or just yourtraditional Sonic Youth/Pixies, The Drones will definitely fit your bill. But they are also a great story band.Think Belle and Sebastian meets The Decemberists meets The Cramps.I especially enjoy the songs like "Shark Fin Blues", "The Best You Can Believe In", and "Locust".Get it today and enjoy. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Sophomore Slump
If I haven't owned their self titled album already, I wouldn't be as disappointed with this release. There are only a few songs that come close to the level of rock on the self titled album. Blacken My Thumb and I Got No Words are the standouts of the CD and some of the middle tracks have the feeling of bland filler. If you have interest in the Datsuns, get their first album and wait for their next one to come out.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Judge is a dumbass
How can you say Led Zeppelin aren't real rock and roll. Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Just so you know, anyone how listens to the strokes isn't a real rocker. You know nothing about rock and roll. Go listen to some real rock like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, and AC/DC until then shut the hell up and stop sharing your idiotic ideas. I don't care for this cd that much though get a better rock band like the best SILVERTIDE.

Hey - I don't care WHERE this group is from - the Datsuns are one of the best new groups on the scene right now. This is one opening act (currently on tour with the Pixies), you DON'T want to miss.I'd say Frank Black and co. are a pretty good judge of talent and they are giving this group a big opportunity (and rightly so) to take advantage of some serious exposure among alternative (whatever the h#ll that means) audiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars this won't make or break me, it's just my OCD . . .
Great catchy, fast, pop-punk that rocks hard and sticks to the ribs. Falls along the spectrum somewhere between the Ramones and Snuff but, as a record, it definitely stands alone.Think the Queers and/or Scared of Chaka, with a dose of no-bullsh#t late-70's style power and chord changes. Lots of fun (see review below) and highly recomended!

Thirteen songs in 28 minutes, played with Ramonesy enthusiasm and tightness. The Dirtnap label specializes in this kind of thing, and the Marked Men is one of the better acts I heard in 2004.They play very fast but not sloppy, and even slip in the occasional 2 and 3 part harmonies! The singing is right on key and tuneful, not gruff, sung in the style of the Ramones but without the goofy Joey Ramone vibe.Lyrics that are clever but not always intelligible; nothing too deep but which avoids the annoying "emo" or "angst" style lyrics of the last 5-10 years, which is nice.It all adds up to a fun listen, something you can blast on your headphones on your way to school or work, or in your room at top volume, and it all flies by quite enjoyably.Crank it! ... The Kills, who hail from bloody old England, are the newest guy/girl garage-rock duo kicking out the solid-gold jams. On their debut EP (full-length will be released in Spring), the duo aims to be the United Kingdom's answer to the White Stripes; and though the concept is becoming a bit pass, they do a pretty good job playing mechanics in the classic rock chop-shop. The songs on this EP come across like a young Chrissie Hynde recording some demos on an answering machine with Lou Reed. Call it fuzzed-out raunch rawk if you like. Add to that sound some sassy stage names, (the girl goes by VV while the guy goes by Hotel), and one can already hear the roar of the hype machine revving its engine.5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite new band.......
I first saw this band in October 2002 when they openned for Sleater-Kinney in Brooklyn NY. I had never heard of them before and it was love at first sight and sound for me. This is gritty, nasty, garage rock, chock full of catchy hooks and blues chords. Weather its the infectious beat of"Cat Claw", or the slowly haunting melodic pace of "Wait", this music will get under your skin and stay there. Onstage female singer/guitarist VV(dont know what that stands for), is a combination of Donita Sparks and Steven Tyler. She's at her best during the songes that she doesnt play guitar whenshe does this wicked sick little dance that I cant really descibe, but I just luv. I cant remember ever being this excited about a new band before. The only down side to this band is that they record on Dim Mak records so they wont get a whole lot of promotion, and they probably wont sell a whole lot of records. Something very interesting is going on here, and I have the distinct feeling this band's first full length is going to be an absolute stunner. The pieces are all here, just need to channel that into 12-15 songs and let us have it. ... Read more

      Editorial Review

To put it kindly, this Chicago quartet lacks a commanding vocalist. But Jered Gummere, the Tom Verlaine fan who most often takes the mic, would rather cajole than command anyway. "Let's Kill Ourselves," easily the most playful suicide note since Elton John's "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself," is less an order than an invitation to make a lark out of depression. Similarly, the Ponys' deep, reverberant sound toys with a Jesus and Mary Chain-style darkness only to tweak it, as when a guitar riff from the a Crystals' girl-group classic "And Then He Kissed Me" lumbers out of the depths of "Fall In." In each of the singers' unfulfilled vocal aspirations, and in the way the upward-scrawling guitars refuse to be set straight by the forthright drumming, you can hear a band whose limitations have thankfully forced them to translate punk tradition into their own idiosyncratic language. 5-0 out of 5 stars An absolutely splendid album
I first discovered The Ponys through their second album, CELEBRATION CASTLE.I had been told by friends and informed by reviews that this was much better than their earlier album, LACED WITH ROMANCE, so for a while I didn't bother to become acquainted with the earlier effort. When I did get around to listening to this one, I did not find an album that was in any way inferior to the later album. The second album is a bit more polished and musically diverse, but the first smacks more of the garage, and my own taste runs more in that direction.
3-0 out of 5 stars Laced With Romance trots along
'Laced With Romance' basically combines Robert Smith wails with music that falls somewhere in between Britpop jangle and Televisions 'Marquee Moon', Johnny Marr meets Tom Verlaine. After awhile the vocals seem a bit rough, yet at the sametime, they do capture the spirit of post-punk defiance. Angular guitars, sparkling melodies, with rabble-rousing vocals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Album of the year
There's few experiences as rewarding as discovering a great new band, and that's just what we have here. There is awesome songcraft here: beautifully layered guitar sounds, irresistible riffs, awesome beats.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars are these guys still around?
the last entry on their website was july 2005, and a second disc was supposedly ready for release. These guys aren't as bad as I originally thought; upon repeated listenings the songs grew on me, and once you take the GenerationX,Blondie,Heartbreakers posing with a grain of salt, they're actually pretty good.I think had they not played the "let's dress like Johnny Thunders" angle, they might not have taken the potshots they did. Whatever rivalry occured between them and the Strokes is apparently long dead in the water, and either due to hype or talent, we all know who came out on top. Bazooka!!! isn't essential listening, but if you take it for what it is, it ain't bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Punk + Glam = The Star Spangles
This album is the first album by punk/glam rockers, The Star Spangles. This band has the best of both worlds. They got the power chord crunch and simplistic song writing from The Ramones, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols. They got the swagger of the Rolling Stones and the guitar solos of the late 80s hair metal. Quite a combonation! Their music should be on all radio stations across the country. The songs "Which One Of The Two Of Us Is Gonna Burn This House Down" and "L.A." are the best songs on this disc. If you like the Ramones or Pretty Boy Floyd, take this trip down memory lane.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rubbish
This is the type of Empire Records soundtrack reject, pseudo '77 punk-rock that so vibrantly inspires all those "Rock Is Dead" songs. Everything about this project screams a deep-seeded desire to go back to a time before Reagannomics and open for the Sex Pistols or The Ramones. The problems stopping these loft-renting fashion nightmares from realizing this dream being time travel's unfeasibility and their complete lack of inspirational ability and passion aside from getting themselves laid. These songs are indistinguishable from one another. None of them have the bouncy party vibe of Franz Ferdinand nor the distinctive guitar or sonic quality attained by The Strokes.Bazooka!!!, like its namesake, is an explosive weapon of supreme annoyance that's not easy to listen to and its use should be discouraged at all times. At least if this were fun, amusing, or cool in any way, it would be temporarily justifiable but it's not any of these things even accidentally. But weapons such as this, though constitutionally protected, are morally wrong. All bazookas should be disposed of to help usher in a new age of peace and understanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Garage-Punk band ever!
It can definetly be argued that the Mummies were the greatest garage-punk band of all time. Why?Well, they put together the catchiest, most raw, funniest, in your face tunes out there. The Mummies used the worst equiptment that they could find so as to sound as unprofessional as possible and have that lo-fi garage-punk sound that made them such an excellent band.Originally none of the Mummies material was available on CD (all of the 45s and 12 inches that they put out used to have a stamp on the back of them saying how much they hated CDs).Do yourself a favor and get this CD!!!It's full of great songs and is proof that music doesn't have to be overly-polished to be excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Death by Unga Bunga!!
The Mummies - what a band. This overview of their finest work is some of the most winning, grimy, infectious rock'n'roll you are ever likely to hear. Just pray that they drive their famous touring ambulance over to your town in the near future.

3-0 out of 5 stars Totally Fun but not Genius
I don't know why this album in particular has instigated this tirade from me but for some reason all the bad reviews have really pissed me off.For whatever reason I'm in the habit of reading the lowest rated reviews of albums I like first.Usually I just laugh at the ignorant fools who say stuff like, "The Velvet Underground is the most over rated band in history," and you won't find a more vigorous Velvets defender than me.But the handful of lousy reviews for this album, which I don't even give 4 stars myself, really made me mad.
4-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!
i love the Hives. This album is so fast and loud and not like anything else around today, i don't understand how you could not like it.Sure Howlin' Pelle is a bit hard to understand, but he's so high energy and amazing! if you like music, you definetly need to own this CD

5-0 out of 5 stars ROCK OUT!!
Its been a while since a band like the Hives have been around. Bands liike the Stooges and the New York Dolls were bands that had the energy, the anger, and the talent to pioneer punk rock. Raw Power by the Stooges especially showed what a breakneck speed thrashing guitars, anthemic, though at times repetitive drum work, and a screeching voice can do. The Hives remind me so much of these great bands, and they certainly hold their own.
