5-0 out of 5 stars The best CD ever!!!
J-Abs was chillin one day with Gene Garber wearin his throwback 1987 Braves jersey and Garbs asked me if I had ever heard of Ass Cobra by Turbonegro.I told him I had not but with a name like that I was definately interested. So we headed to the North Platte state fair and they were the headlining act.People were actually booing Loverboy trying to get them off the stage so we could get to some real tunage. So when they opened with Mobile Home the house erupted. This had to be the best show I have seen since well Grim Reaper in 83.The drummer was mad cold kickin. For the finale they had this huge ass cobra come out of the amp and hiss at everyone telling them that they rocked and too bring on the Black Mamba cuz he would kick his butt.Afterwards J-Abs was so impressed that he followed their tour from North Platte to Des Moines to Council Bluffs to Mexico. If you ever get a chance to see this band live do yourself a favor and check it out.You won't be as cool as me and Garbs but you may hit the coolness radar screen finally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, some music that doesn't [...]
Ok, I know that by now TurboNegro has gotten played on MTV, what with Bam and the Wild Boys. But dear God!Finally something that hasn't been worked over by the [...] that turns out most of what we get exposed to these days.
5-0 out of 5 stars hardest cd I own, hardest band I've seen...
I first heard of TN last summer when I saw a poster at the Southside festival in Tubingen.I thought "hmm, interesting."Just under a year later they played a club in D.C. & I thought "any band calling themselves Turbonegro has got to be worth checking out."So I went having never heard or seen them.Absolutely one of the hardest shows I've been to, with buckets of blood even.I played the back of the hall and observed. At a show like this you just know someone's going to get stomped out.Sure enough about half-way through their set, a victimization.I'm thinking he was a poser who went for the scene, when he should have just went for the tunes and played the back like me.Oh, well, some young punks got to learn the hard way.

Editorial Review

Patriotism may be the last refuge of scoundrels, but nostalgia traditionally puts bread on the table for succeeding generations of rock musicians long after the hits stop coming. If 25th anniversary celebrations--the excuse for this Misfits "roots" covers collection--seem the very antithesis of punk, they're but another golden marketing opportunity for Jerry Only, the sole original band member still standing and arguably the Energizer Bunny of ghoul-punk. Teamed here with Marky Ramone and ex-Black Flag guitarist Dez Cadena, Only turns his band's beloved PG-13 thrash-horror shtick loose on an oddball collection of his '50s and '60s musical inspirations. And just when you thought irony was passé, Only croon-howls it undead with fervent renditions of "This Magic Moment" by Jay & the Americans, Paul Anka's frothy "Diana," and Conway Twitty's "Only Make Believe." Still it's hard Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This sucks bigtime
What the hell is this crapola? The real Misfits were not about lame as* bullsh*t! Like everyone else says, what you usually hear without Danzig has lost it's edge. They lost their edge. What's the point of making music and calling yourself the Misfits when you're really not changing anything? Punk is about change. Change is usually edgy, this is honestly far from that. The Misfits changed music - they had their own sound, they were original, and nobody else had that sound. I'm saying this about alot of other bands. We're not Danzig heads, we're not kissing as*. The Misfits truly lost their edge. We're not expecting every band to always sound the same - but at least create newer and edgier music because nowadays every band sounds the same. It's all up to the original bands to influence everybody, and when you're making music that doesn't influence anyone, what's your point - money?

3-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's rock n roll. Why so serious?
I'm really amazed at how many people don't like this album. Now I'll admit that it's not my favorite Misfits album, but c'mon, take it for what it is. This is just a fun little album to throw on every now and then.
1-0 out of 5 stars This Shouldn't Be Called the Misfits. It Should Be Called "The Crappy Jerry Only Side Project"
I'm not a Glenn Danzig's ass kisser freak(though he is amazing), but, ahem, OHMYGOD!!!!!!!!!!!WHATISTHIS?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Jerry Only's voice is just intolerable(except in great balls of fire, which is the only good song on this monstrosity) Jerry should just move on. Glenn and (finally)Doyle moved on, but Jerry is still in total denial that the Misfits are dead, and are not coming back unless Glenn, Doyle, and Jerry ALL want to come back and make a new misfits CD. Its kinda like how I'm in total denial over the fact that summer's over, even though I've been in school for over 6 months. I mean, he so wants the Misfits to stay, that he starts doing crappy 1950s covers just to have another CD with the Misfits label on it! C'mon, that's almost as pathetic as having a song called Walk Among Us on the American Psyco album. Jerry should do us all a favor, and just give up on trying to ressurect The Misfits, cause it aint working. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars So bad
Dudes. What? Are you kidding me?This is so bad it's almost funny. As a comedy album it is somewhat funny. So bad. It's fake rock.and to take their name from one of the greatest bands in the world.Worst ever.I'm laughing right now. What is it people see in these guys?I don't know. The Deep Purple of the 2000;s = Worst ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great Jimi Hendrix-esque rock album that's also a little cheesy - you'll be satisfied - 4.5 stars
The Mooney Suzuki is essentially trying to be the Jimi Hendrix Experience of recent times. They somewhat succeed - at least in how they sound. The problem with The Mooney Suzuki is that the songs aren't deep enough and they're slightly cheesy as opposed to practically every Jimi Hendrix song. They're definitely fun and catchy, but in terms of longevity they're only good if you happen to have them (i.e. it's one of those records that's great to have but not essential). The singer is definitely trying to mimic Jimi, and he pretty much succeeds (my dad thought it was Jimi when I played this). Musically it's garage rock that sounds pretty darn close to anything Jimi Hendrix. The instrumentation is really really good, though (the production is pretty well done). Thankfully every song is good here. Overall it's a pretty good record which I think garage rock fans should be pleased with. Highly recommended!
5-0 out of 5 stars This album is rock `n roll...pure and simple...
This album is rock `n roll...pure and simple. It is raw, energetic and very real. It is so much better than their new major label debut "Alive & Amplified" which sounds nothing like this. There are a lot of great retro CD's out there right now but this is the best I've heard. This album should win an award for `most great guitar riffs per mile' not to mention some great distorted guitar sounds to cleanse your ears with. Like any great `60's garage rock album, this includes two rocking instrumentals and one ballad. Best song is "In a Young Man's World" which sounds like a cross between MC5 and The Who. Plus all the guys in this band look like they could be the offspring of Iggy Pop (and maybe they are). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars If you liked "The Wedding," you'll like this
Not bad at all on its own deliberately theoretical terms. If "The Wedding" had not preceded it, "HNY" would have stood out more prominently on its own. Without a single song as catchy as the cascading Krautrock-lilt of the previous album's "Eiger," however, there is more consistency on HNY if a bit less experimentation, unevenness, and at times a bit of fun. The band here settles into its folk-electronic, rather studiously whimsical, attitude. The result is finely crafted but sounds a bit too worked over, rather fussy. I tend to like this sort of music if it's not too over-arranged. Here, it's intricate.
4-0 out of 5 stars Curious, enjoyable.
This being my first Oneida experience, my efforts to review this disc lack the broader perspective of an aficionado, but perhaps have the overlooked advantages that come with an unassuming fresh pair of ears. That said, my opinion of this work is ambivalent. I'm intruiged, and to a small degree disturbed by it. Oneida's sound sometimes recalls a disorienting crash of cymbals, the sharp-sounding brakes of a barrelling train. Overall, the effect makes for a quirky, strange, and sometimes wonderful show of talent. ... Read more

It may be cute and cuddly to link Mudhoney with the grunge generation of the Pacific Northwest's early nineties, but even after a cup of coffee in the majors the Seattle foursome continues to endure more then a decade after the genre was deemed defunct. 4-0 out of 5 stars Storm Surge
Mudhoney is still intact, it's all here: The surging, relentless power-sludge welling up out of the rumbling bass, drums and guitar drone complete with crashing waves of squirrelly soloing.
4-0 out of 5 stars Blast from the past
Mudhoney have always refused to be a part of the 'mainstream' despite the fact that in the late 80s they were among the originators of grunge. As a matter of fact they have always celebrated their 'independent' status and this is something they do not forget to do in their new album. In 'Under a Billion Suns' they utilise their old acid grunge recipes, add to the mix a healthy dose of horn arrangements and, while their 'old' age has by now become pretty obvious, they manage to serve us with quite a few refreshments which are especially delightful for their old fans. This album won't change your life, it's probably not the first Mudhoney record one should buy but it's well worth a few spins in your player. Do not ignore it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rawk!

New Zealand rockers the Datsuns fearlessly hitch the sound of Antipodean forebears AC/DC, the Saints, and the Scientists onto the stripped-back blues howl of the White Stripes. In their gloriously simple world, riffs are basic, guitar solos heroic, and lyrical concerns don't stretch much beyond bad women who've done these volume-addled longhairs wrong. A song like "MF from Hell" demonstrates where the Datsuns are coming from: guitars chug while singer Dolf De Datsun yelps and delivers a big, dumb chorus that would've made the Ramones proud. There are touches of Mudhoney ("Lady" is basically "Touch Me I'm Sick 2003"), Thin Lizzy, and any band made up of guys who don't think much beyond booze, girls, and sleeping in a ditch after a perfect show. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Rockin' Band
The Datsuns arrive in the nick of time to show of their loud rock noise to change the tides of the music nation. Many of these reviewers don't give the credit that they deserve. With The Datsuns you can definately see some definate influences for old rockers such as Led Zeppelin which isn't a bad thing at all. These guys aredoing their own thing in the whole Rock N' Roll genre. These guys are orignal from the stand point they aren't like a few bands where you can hear definate riffs from their prodecessors (ie. Jet). The solos are nothing short of decent quality and have some power that really add to the songs. Though short they are very good. I couldn't choose a favorite song if I tried I just like driving around in my car with this blasting because hey I will probably be the only one playing this band. Overall The Datsuns are a great underplayed and underhyped band that deserve the credit they deserve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get over it, and turn this sh*t up
You like rock? Do you like drinking alcohol? Do you think highly of yourself, despite your A**holish characterstics? Buy this album.
3-0 out of 5 stars Turbo Negro Hates the Kids...
I would've given this cd more stars if the Hellacopters or Fu Manchu or Mudhoney had never existed (or hadn't done it better), but they do a good job of recreating what makes the aforementioned bands so good: namely imitating AC/DC, Blue Cheer and Motorhead, and how could you not love that from a country where the best they could come with was Crowded House/The Split Enz? While I wouldn't put this in my top twenty, it still deserves a regular listen, especially if you're planning on any extended state ofintoxication. ... Read more

...no one punches you in the mouth like the Dirtbombs. If this one doesn't get your blood pumping, you're already dead and just don't know it yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars safe as chocolate milk
...maybe the best "post modern" garage rock album since Capt. Beefheart's "Safe as Milk"...big funky bottom juxtaposed with Mick's angular white hot r-n-r guitar...rocket soul music...if the Captain had been the greatest black rock singer to walk the planet, instead of the greatest white blues singer, he and the original Magic Band might have sounded something like this...course one reason it's so great is, as Mick says in the liner notes, these songs are all SINGLES!...crank this bitch up and do the Beavis and Butthead Booty Shake!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gimme dirt, baby!
I just saw the Dirtbombs last week in NYC and once again, they completely tore the roof of the joint. Once the double drummers kicked in, it was on! Within seconds, I was a pogoing sweaty mess.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Unheralded Classic
Where the hell has this one been hiding??!!I have a pretty extensive collection and somehow this one has eluded me.Let's just say better late than never...this is one ripsnorting mutha!Very much like Action Swingers or Flamethrower...just a balls out, unrelenting sonic assault.Don't know why this isn't mentioned in the same sentence as Black Flag's Damaged or Damned Damned Damned...recommended for listening after a bad day at work or when served divorce papers.

5-0 out of 5 stars simply the best
I listen to endless amounts of punk, ska, punk-hc, street punk, anarcho-punk, and punk-ska.I usually dont listen to my music all that loud at all.But when I listen to New Bom Turks, I cant help but trun it up to the point just before my speekers blow out!Get this cd!This is some amazing music.energetic, fun, amazing, fast, loud, hard.GET THIS CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it just coincidence that everyone gives this album five?
The answer - no. That's because it's one of the best albums of the 90s - if not the best. In fact, it's just as much a punk classic as the first albums by the Ramones or the Cramps or New York Dolls. Thank god there's still bands like the Turks who beleive in the devine powers of rock 'n' roll, and that punk is a great way to bring those powers out. A vital rock 'n' roll document for one and all who want to save rock 'n' roll from the clutches of MTV and popular radio. Best songs: "Born Toulouse-Letoric", "Runnin' On Go", "Mr. Suit", "I'm Weak", and "Crying In the Beer of a Drunk Man". Than again, not a single song is bad. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of their finest
The essence of what are the Cramps. Anyone with any musical taste should buy a copy. Audiophile types KEEP OUT!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not essential.
I'm a big Cramps fan, own everything by them, but felt very cheated when I bought this. The recording quality couldn't be any worse.I'd give the cd itself one star, but I give two stars for the booklet, which is great with many great illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cramps - 'How To Make A Monster' 2-CD (Vengeance)
Nice audio scrap book of some truly rare/nearly impossible-to-find snippets from the vaults that spans through much of the group's twenty-five plus year career.A total of 45 tracks.Disc one has plenty of semi-rough demos and rehearsal sets. All are of very listenable quality, dating back between 1976-88.Out of the six segments here,I think I like the 1982 A&M Studio demos the best, with "Five Years Ahead Of My Time"(one of the best Cramps songs I think I've ever heard),"Call Of The Wighat" and the Tommy James&The Shondells cover "Hanky Panky".Also fun to hear were the two October 1976 roughs "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" and "Can't Hardly Stand It".Disc two is a REAL gem.First part is a good-sounding nine track gig from the band's third EVER playing gig at Max's Kansas City in January 1977.With cuts like "Don't Eat Stuff Off The Sidewalk","Sunglasses After Dark","TV Set" and the unforgetable "I'm Cramped",you get to fully experience a real 'live' vintage Cramps concert.Check out the sparse-sounding crowd, but then again, this WAS their 3rd show.Second part is from another concert,a year later at the famed CBGB's,with tunes like "The Way I Walk","Human Fly","Uranium Rock" and "Subwire Desire" show you the way to yet another Cramps shindig of days gone by.This concert has been widely-available as both a bootleg(I'll assume)as well as a legit release known as 'Lucky 13'.Wanted to mention that I've seen something like six(6)Cramps bootleg CD's in the past year and even on those discs, there ARE songs here on 'How To Make A Monster' that I don't remember seeing on any of those boots. Also, this 2-CD is tracked MUCH better, perfect in fact.Back cover of the release notes that all these cuts are in fact previously unreleased.I believe that might mean THESE actual demo/rehearsal versions.Either way,'How To...' is a MUST-HAVE for any and all Cramps fans.Old,new,die-hards and just fans who enjoy collecting rare/live recordings of those such-cool bands that many of us never really seem to grow tired of.The line-up on many of these tunes are:Lux Interior-vocals,Poison Ivy-guitar,Byron Gregory(R.I.P.)-buzz guitar and Nick Knox-drums.Comes with an irresistible 24-page full-color booklet packed with loads of rarely(if ever)seen photos, well written liner notes and memorabilia. Most highly recommended. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great first wave punk rock
Great music to cruise around in your vintage car to. The first half of the CD is great. The "Rats Revenge part 1 and 2" are the most retarded songs I've ever heard but thats what makes them great! Larry and the Blue Notes doing the "Night of the Phantom" will make you check your back when you make out with a hot kitten in the back of your car at inspiration point. Triumphs rip in to surf punk romp "Surfside Date" that will kick any of these vans wearing, blonde tipped suburbian punk whiners in their pampered butts! Then your on to two of my favorites on the CD the first being "Scream", a massacre take-off on the then popular song "Shout" and it sounds so much better. It sounds as if when they recorded this song they were murdering someone, very unnerving. Then the awesome Novas do the song "The Crusher" I'm speechless to describe what a artistic masterpiece this is. The grunty screamy vocals, and the slow sludge of the guitars makes this CD worth buying after that it kind of goes downhill for me. It gets a little monotonous on the second half. However the first half redeems the CD completely. This is a must for people who like dirt in their music.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is as pure as rock n' roll gets!!
Sometimes we seem to forget that the heart of rock n' roll is horny teenagers making loud, obnoxious noises in the garage just because, dammit, it FEELS GOOD. It's definitely an aquired taste, but this series is a great reminder of what rock n' roll was originally meant to be. Out of time, out of tune, but a hell of a lot of fun. It's worth it for the One Way Streets insane mutilation of Jack the Ripper alone. And anybody who can't listen to Rats Revenge parts I and II and not grin like an idiot is dead. This might not be the beginnings of punk rock, but punk wouldn't have happened without stuff like this. Definitely recommended if you want to know where it all really started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rat's Revenge
I honestly feel sorry for anyone who doesn't "get" this music. It's about creating instead of consuming, it's about taking a shot against the odds, but mostly it's about having fun.

Editorial Review

This is the second stateside album by this workmanlike Swedish power pop garage act. People who don’t use TiVo to skip through the adverts have already heard the best song on the album, "Jerk It Out," from that iPod Shuffle commercial. That tune’s been tacked on here even though it’s 3 years old, and it’s easy to see why it was resuscitated as it blows away its neighbors on this CD. Organ-driven, tight and cool, "Jerk" is the kind of song you just want to dance around a crowded room filled with cute people all dressed up like mods and ready to party. The lyrics are daft, but they’re young, and it’s just rock music, right? Not all the new tunes pale in comparison to "Jerk it Out," however. "Your Time Is Near" is a really good, suggesting collaboration between the Concretes and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, while "We Got To Leave" judiciously uses handclaps. In the end, however, this band does seem more like another trendy, sort-of retro, kind-of garage rockist group. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Fan
This cd is a knockout, hands down one of my new favorite cds. First introduction to caesers was the catchy jerk it out, which was from 39 minutes of bliss and makes another appearance on paper tigers. Easily thier most recognizable and best song. Other monsters are Spirit which is a solid opener, It's Not the Fall That Hurts, May the Rain, Paper Tigers, and in my opinion Winter Song which grew on me. Its hard to say any negatives about this cd because there really aren't any. Those who like the kaiser chiefs, franz ferdinand, the killers and motion city soundtrack should enjoy the caesers in thier sophmore album. A unique blend of garage punk pop by the band from sweden leaves you with songs you wont be able to get out of your head all day. An unrealesed song i suggest checking out is "over before it started", it will leave you wanting more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very welcome retro sound
This album is for anyone who fell in love with "Jerk It Out" on the iPod commercial. With a poppy, 60's retro, garage sound, reminiscent of the early Beatles, The Caesars deliver a surprisingly fresh collection of tunes. This is exactly the dichotomy that makes The Caesars a welcome addition to that sub-genre of alt rock that seems to be coming around again. Very melodic and very rockin'. A fun disc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album - Well Worth The Money!
Caesar's Palace, The Caesars, The Twelve Caesars - they're all the same group. They go by different names depending on location - Twelve Caesars in most of Scandinavia, The Caesars in North America, and Caesar's Palace in Sweden, most of europe, and the rest of the world.

Editorial Review

New York City music pals Matt Verta-Ray and Jon Spencer have joined forces to create one of the strongest works in either of their catalogs. Spencer of course led his own Blues Explosion, after the demise of his earlier Pussy Galore, while Verta-Ray was rumbling about with the similarly inclined Speedball Baby. The two play off each other throughout these thirteen songs with evident glee. Their contrasting vocal styles are heard to great effect on such tandem numbers as "This Day Is Mine." They're joined by a rotating cast of sympathetic players, but it is the strength of their own character and writing that unifies the disc. Sassy, barbed, punchy, and real, they captured each number with rough and tumble perfection. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jon Spencer has found his calling
I have been a huge fan of Jon Spencer for years and if your like me and have been slightly disappointed in the last couple of records (Plastic Fang, Damage) I mean they arent terrible, they just dont have the edge and replayability of extra width, orange and The Caroline album. This was the revitalization that Jon Spencer needed. I find myself anticipating the next Heavy Trash album much more than JSBX. Its definitely not like The Blues Explosion but its just the right mix of Johnny Brunette, Elvis and Hank Williams combined with a lo-fi modern edge. If you like rockabilly and Gothic Country, completely disregard "Cooljames" comments, this album doesnt say JSBX on it, it says Heavy Trash. By the way, I do agree with the disapointment of 5150 but this aint like that. This album is great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Oddball rockabilly update
Neither Jon Spencer (Pussy Galore, Blues Explosion) nor Matt Verta-Ray (Speedball Baby, Madder Rose) are strangers to '50s rockabilly, but nothing in their catalogs has so purely chased the Sun's slapback fueled sound so fully. Which isn't to suggest this is an exercise in retro reproduction, as the duo's music is influenced by the garage sounds of The Cramps, the bigger-than-life attitude of glam-rock (T Rex, New York Dolls), and is threaded with organ, theramin and other unusual touches. The dominant forces, though, are the duos vocals and their guitars. The drums are lowered in the mix, letting the bass and the guitar strings themselves carry a lot of the beat, and the vocals contain the yelping energy of Charlie Feathers. "Mr. K.I.A." strips the band down to thumping percussion and a Johnny Cash like baritone vocal. "Walking Bum" takes the tempo down to a walk for John Graboff to overlay his pedal steel with Spencer and Verta-Ray twang the low-end of their tremolo drenched guitar strings. "Lover Street" sounds like the Cramps borrowing the slide riff of Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle With You." Interesting stuff - but perhaps not for rockabilly purists! 2-0 out of 5 stars It's garbage if you liked the Blues Explosion
When Van Halen's 5150 album came out, I was 12 years old and was waiting at the mall entrance with my 10-year-old brother to pick up the cassette tape. We bought the tape for something like 8 bucks, rushed home (walkman technology was still quite pricey at the time) and popped it into my boom box. Expecting to hear the Hagarized version of David Lee's 1984, my anticipation peaked as the music started. But wait! The first song sucks. I fast-forward to the 2nd track. No 'Hot for Teacher' drums or 'Panama' stomping guitars? No! 3nd song? It sucks. 4th? Poopies. At this point, anticipation gave way to anxiety. Two songs later, frustration. When the last song on the album didn't even turn out to be an "I'll Wait", I realized what happened. Van Halen went soft, and it's unlikely that they'll make it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've got a great feelin' about this. Get it?
The holy grail of garage. Mick Collins should be President of the United States. If you don't own this record, you have serious issues. Are you having troubles in yer personal life? Best Record of the 90's. Do yourself a flavor

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Darin Lin Wood Creation
For those searchers who really want to comprehend what would happen if Hank Williams blended with Keith Levene this is a start, and for those who realize that the White Stripes ripped off a movement started in the early 80s by copulating Punk with Western, outlaw, "country" sounds this is a proof; Gun Club, 68 Comeback, Royal Trux/(...) Galore, Acetone, Fireworks, Jackknife,
5-0 out of 5 stars Mick's Best Ever
Blacktop's complete recordings CD, I Got A Baaad Feelin' About This, is my all time favorite Mick Collins musical venture. It's so angry and noisy compared to anything else Mr. Collins has done before or since. Janet Walker's drums are simple yet they never come off sloppy. Alex Cuervo's Bass lines tie in with Janet's drums so well, you almost miss them. And Darin Lin Wood's distored guitar riffs blend perfectly with Mick's sheet metal noise fest. This Cd is just great, there's not a bad tune on the entire disc. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars too pure
On their 2002 debut, Purely Evil, Brooklyn's Rogers Sisters - Jennifer on guitar, Laura on drums, and Miyuki Furtado, who's neither a Rogers nor a "sister," on bass - offered an occasionally thrilling garage-fuzz take on the then-burgeoning spastic Gang of Four-mat. Their latest is more sonically diverse, and more enticing. You can dance to opener "Why Won't You," but its mix of tube-warmed guitar slashes, thick bass rumble, and thumping backbeat is more Led Zep boogie than the ol' post-punk herky-jerk. "Money Matters" nicks its initial riff from the intro to "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (which Joy Division stole from Pete Townshend, so it's a wash), but the song quickly slips into Pixies/Breeders guitarsplatter-and-silence dynamics. The Rogers Sisters do better when the two siblings take the vocal lead with their sometimes sugary, sometimes shouty harmonies, as opposed to Furtado's sporadic Fred Schneider-isms. And they're at their best when the voices of all three blend, as they do so hypnotically in the woozy, flute-dappled midnight crawler "Little World." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Garage Soul
This is a great concept, Soul and R&B played like garage rock and in the process inventing a new sub-genre, Garage Soul!! Not just anyone could pull this off though because not just anyone can sing raspy voiced soul over screaming guitars and driving drums. You need a special individual like Mick Collins, lead singer of The Dirtbombs. This is a very innovative album for a cover song disc. It is pulsating, throbbing rock that will put a stupid grin on your face and a cocky strut in your walk. Even when a song doesn't quite adapt to the rock idiom such as Marvin Gaye's dance classic "Got To Give It Up", which has it's keyboard riff transposed to electric guitar, it still works better than it should. Stevie Wonder's "Living For The City" adapts seamlessly to the rock treatment and my personal fave is Thin Lizzy's "Ode To A Black Man". This particular cut should have gotten airplay and would have turned these guys from cult sensations to Rock superstars overnight. Few songs grab me the way this one does when it comes stomping out of the speakers. I've been known to play this one as much as 8 times in a row. The first time I played this album, I said it was one of the best things I had heard in a long time. I think I will be saying that for quite some time. Rock n' soul haven't been this cozy together in a long, long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stop rock n' roll before it's too late...
The Dirtbombs are a great band and this album represents some of their best work. This album has plenty of booty shakin' rock n' soul to go around. How can you go wrong with a band that's almost all rhythm section?
4-0 out of 5 stars Who says rock 'n' roll is dead?
The Dirtbombs manage to combine rock 'n' roll with soul in a way so fantastic few bands could ever pull it off. Like everything the great Mick Collins has done, it proves there are still a few great pure rock 'n' roll bands out there. The album is a series of covers (with the exception of "Your Love Belongs Under a Rock") that match and sometimes manage to be better than the originals. The thing that made the New York Dolls and the Ramones so great makes Mick Collins great - he knows his rock 'n' roll history. I would give anything to be able to go through the man's record collection. He covers well known artists, but chooses more obscure tunes as opposed to their hits. If most bands where to cover Thin Lizzy, they'd choose "The Boys Are Back In Town" or "Jailbreak". Collins picks "Ode to a Black Man" (coincedentally the greatest song on the album). An original mix of two bassists, two drummers, and the great Collins on guitar and vocals. ... Read more
