5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Brazilian Post-Punk from the 80's
The vibrant and energetic Brazilian Post-Punk movement from the 80's went by without anyone, outside of Brazil, taking notice. Finally, Soul Jazz (thank you!) decided to put out this awesome compilation. Now the world can listen to how Brazilians reacted to American and European Punk music. "The Sexual Life of the Savages" covers a lot of ground from the guitar-heavy music of As Mercenarias and Smack to the moody and sophisticated ambiance of Chance (one of my favorite bands to this day), from the experimental and rich rhythms of Patife and Akira S to the tropical goth of Cabine C and NAU, and from the low-tech samba of Fellini (the best Brazilian band EVER) to the spooky 80's tecno-pop of Harry. This is experimental Post-Punk music like you never imagined.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great comp from Soul Jazz!
I bought this about a month ago, never expecting to be too impressed by it. I just wanted to have a taste of something that seemed like a bizarre concept to me, initially. I mean Brazilian post-punk?! C'mon! I love Brazilian music (60s/70s) and bands like Os Mutantes were as good as most psychedelic bands in the US and Europe in the 60s, but i couldn't imagine a post-punk movement doing something significant in a country like Brazil.
5-0 out of 5 stars So Paulo Scene You Never Knew Existed... Brasil
Wow ! Track 3@4 are ok and take some getting use to, but all 18 tracks are wow ! Punk there is, but it seems to me it is 80's all the way. A must and get ready. Check out the liners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Accessibility
I like this cd, I owned it before but broke it so I bought it again and decided to do a review. I think it is a good buy for someone unfamiliar with what 'grunge' was. This cd helps you to see some undiscovered artists that didn't really hit it big...The Trees are great, soft but still great Lanegan had the best vocals in the scene imo. Don't get this for the Nirvana song. And if you are expecting cheap Nirvana remakes, don't waste your time. The bands have unique sounds and this cd covers a pretty good variety of the different aspects of the Seattle rock scene.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is music
all i have tooo say is that this is music. if You don't like It, You should. SubPop are true artists

4-0 out of 5 stars Ghosts in the Vaults
A great compilation that gives the listener a chance to return to the glory days of late '80's/early 90's Seattle. Many of the bands here I had never heard of - much less heard - but was pleasantly surprised by the discs' overall quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars uh huh...them
This is a great compilation that introduced me to alot of "new" bands.I bought this being a fan of bands like Hole, the Lunachicks, the Muffs, Buck, etc...BTW, the song "Retard Girl" by Hole...Courtney Love wrote it about herself, she's the retard girl! Yes, she grew up poor white trash..and was taunted and made fun of.Go figure.Any fan of indie rock of the female persuasion should love this! Great stuff by April March, Third Grade Teacher, etc and "Dishy" is a great song.*rock on with yr frock on*

This album is ok but no big deal. It's not the greatest punk comp. Cd in the world but it's fun and it's [inexpensive], so I say buy it if it's the only punk comp in the store (I even saw this one at [my local store]). I think they should start putting live tracks on Punk O Rama CDs, but hey that's just me. Personally I've always preferred "Fat Music For Fat People" Or "Lookout Freakout" better. But like I said it's fun and if you have [money] to burn I say get it, unless you can get your hands on a Fat Music or Lookout Freakout CD. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you missed 1998's Family Values tour featuring Incubus, Orgy, Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Rammstein, and Korn, fear not: 15 tracks from the aforementioned bands, plus "interludes," add up to well over an hour of neo-metal-angst-rap that can be enjoyed without venturing into a mosh pit. The CD is a cool deal in that it contains the best songs from each lineup, including radio hits such as Orgy's cover of New Order's "Blue Monday," Limp Bizkit's breakthrough version of George Michael's "Faith," and Rammstein's incendiary Germanic ode "Du Hast." 1-0 out of 5 stars Hahahahahaha!!
The Family Values Tour is a joke, just look at the bands on here:Korn, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, and Rammstein.NONE of them are any good, as they're all pathetic nu-metal s***.Only 12-year-olds would like this.
4-0 out of 5 stars Orgy blows the comp. away!
And that's very true.Orgy had the best set here.KoRn was decent, Rammstein should have had more tracks as should have Incubus, but it was nice to see Bizkit drop some nice tracks not included on their albums like 'Cambodia' and 'Jump Around'.Ice Cube, no matter what you think, held his own here and is serves us a worthy track selection.Too bad 'Family Values' don't come around no more but with Limp sucking now a dayz it would be pointless.Still, this is a solid album with great live performances...could have been better but then again, it's very rare you hit something perfect.

3-0 out of 5 stars first off...
If youre a fan of Bush why would you be looking at a cd titled 'rock AGAINST Bush' in the first place? We're not here to hear about how much respect you have for a man whos driving our country into the ground. We want to know about the music, not your delusional loyalty for someone who obviously has no respect for you or this country. If you are here to go on and on about how much you hate this cd because and only because you, for some strange reason, love Bush... get a life. Do you honestly have nothing better to do then go arround on a site bashing anything and everything that goes against your beloved president? Now... onto the music. some of the bands are good. however it does not show in this album. it is a waste of a perfectally good cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars go fat Mike
this is a great cd good bands and good musicit used to be rock against Regan when I was in high school finally someone speaks out about Bush's horrible term in office

5-0 out of 5 stars "By the Blood" is the most ridiculous reviewer on Amazon.com
I was practically horrified by the complete B.S. being generated by the below review. There are infinite ways in which this "By the Blood" reviewer has gone awry, and I literally quaked in my seat as I read his idiotic rantings. For one thing, he has the nerve to call himself intelligent. Not only is this boastful, it's not true. Anyone who still supports Bush at this point obviously can't be too high on the I.Q. charts. Then of course he says that this compilation is terrible, which any appreciator of rock can quickly prove false if they've listened to Rock Against Bush. By The Blood cannot call himself a music reviewer if he doesn't even classify The Offspring on this CD as punk, for goodness sake. They certainly are punk, and top of the line punk at that. I'm pretty much thinking after having read the majority of the reviews for this item that people are only dissing the music because of their political views. People, it's the melodies that count. You're rating the music, not whether or not the bands share your convictions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Talent
Vagrant has done it again, mixing a great lineup of songs into a cheap comp.Highlights include songs by Hot Rod Circuit, Saves the Day, Audio Learning Center, Dashboard Confessional, Hey Mercedes, The Anniversary, and a song that I actually like by Alkaline Trio.I'd have given this cd 5 stars, but the songs by the Get Up Kids and No Motiv, two band I like, weren't exactly the greatest. Also, A song by Reggie and the Full Effect would've been nice. And Vagrant's lineup still includes Face to Face, so that automatically means that at least one bad song is on this comp.I do recommend you buy this however, because it's cheap, good, and we all have a skip button for when those face to face songs sneak up on us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Great Compilation
This CD is just so great.I picked it up for the Saves the Day B-Side "Ups and Downs" (which is the best song on the cd and is worth the 5-10 bucks you'll spend).I was pretty familiar with some of the other bands, but some I had never heard.Every band is represented with a strong track (or two). The music ranges from soft emo, to almost punk, and everything in between.I don't like to "classify" music, but this is some great emo. This Cd is a super way for people to explore more and hear some different bands.Vagrant is a great label, and this is a great comp.A..., must buy for all music fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet CD
This cd is one of the best present emo compilations. It has everthing from the hardercore emo to the more mainstream emo such as Saves the Day and Get Up Kids. Some of my favorites on this record are "Hands Down" by Dashboard Confessional, "nightengale" by saves the day...and tons more. I would have paid 25 bucks for this thing. but i got it for 5. If you are even reading this review, i recommend purchasing this cd ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good deal with a broader range of styles
For this second "Grave," they build on the success of the first one by keeping the same crazy-[low] price and switching the lineup. Some tracks, like The Cruxshadows' "Marilyn, My Bitterness V2.0" straddle goth, techno and 80s new wave all at once. 4-0 out of 5 stars Had to mention Matrix
my review was mainly to point out a great song on disc 2 that failed to get mentioned previously. while the rest mentioned are good, i find the best song to be Matrix's Dreams are Real. I have since searched for other music by this band. It is compilations like this that make great bands like Matrix rise to the occasion.

4-0 out of 5 stars An affordable cross-section of the dark underground
Fortunately the first Unquiet Grave release warranted a sequel, this timewith EBM and Industrial thrown into the mix.Like the first, there's muchgood, bad and in-between among the 33 tracks, but all in all it'sdefinitely worth the low price tag.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Different versions of one song
Almost 15 years after it's release "Tom's Album" is still available for sale and still one of the most groundbreaking CD's of it's kind. The CD contains different versions of the song "Tom's Diner."In brief, it's the same track with different lyrics and slight alterations to the track.Suzanne Vega is featured on the acoustic version and the version that radio picked up with the group DNA.Another popular version of the song Daddy's Little Girl by rapper Nikki D who raps about a girl who is a little too fast and finds herself pregnant. This was an original concept.I originally bought this album soley for the Suzanne Vega version but found several of the other versions pleasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
Its a MUST for all Tom's Diner & Suzanne Vega lovers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Album for Fans of "Tom's Diner"
I don't know that this is the greatest album unless you're a fan of the song "Tom's Diner," but since that's who I figure it's geared toward, it's definitely worth having. You'll find just about everything you want here--and it will leave you wanting more! The album contains both the acapella as well as the DNA versions of "Tom's Diner" and a host of great remakes and parodies.Read more

The second of Matador's compilations features 2 CDs of old material and 1 CD of previously unreleased songs from great artists like Pavement, Cat Power, Chavez, Modest Mouse, Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney, Guided by Voices and Boards of Canada. The best two new songs from Disc 3 made it onto subsequent Pavement and Cat Power releases, respectively. All three of the Matador comps are packed with dozens of good songs at a single CD price and strongly recommended for new fans.

The tracks on this look like a collage radio play list!!!!! You got THE best in underground rock/Folk/Pop all in One cd. If YOU like good underground (Not that stuff that passes for rock these days) Then buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natalie Merchant "Rare On Air"
Natalie Merchant sings like an angel and this album is so cool
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I bought this collection some ten years ago, and it has aged very, very well. The performances are great, and there's a real cohesion in them in terms of production.Whoever produced the CD really loves music, and must have made many mix tapes in his/her life, because it has the ebb and flow of a really excellent mix tape, with shifting moods and styles.I enjoy quite a bit of it, but the highlights for me are Lucinda Williams' cover of a Nick Drake song, the David Wilcox song, and the Peter Himmelman song, which also features an *amazing*, beautiful, lyrical guitar solo coming straight from the heart. In fact, "Always in Disguise" is really my favorite song overall from this collection.BUY IT TODAY!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A benchmark for live to radio compilations
This compilation is, at the time of writing, the best part of ten years old. And, in my humble opinion, it has never been bettered. Production quality is first rate, performances are almost flawless and the mix of music is spot on. You and yours can't fail to be sucked in by this one. John Cale's first poemblending seemlessly into Tori Amos doing 'Silent all these years',Beck's 'Mexico' is hilarious and wry even after all this time, The Modern's just don't want to end and you won't want them to, Lindsay Buckingham comes up with a magnificent arrangement for an old Fleetwood Mac tune (since copied badly by The Dixie Chicks) and a just wonderful ode to Chet Baker to finish. This is a CD that makes much of modern chill out laughable and shows what can be acheived by a group of people who really love music. It is a primer for the rest of the Rare on Air series and a great place to begin. Grab this while it is still in print. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wake up and smell the coffee, MTV!
Attention MTV:Rap and hip hop are dying!!5-0 out of 5 stars Do you like the 80's?
Good selection of songs.Good CD for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIKE OMIGOSH LIKE TOTALLLY AWESOME FER SHURR!!
With an impresssive track listing this compilation doesn't disappoint. The most valuable thing here is you get songs that are rarely (if ever) on 80's compilations (for example "Don't Put Another Dime in the Juxebox" or "Why Me".) Now if I had a dollar for every 80's compilation that "Too Shy" or "Come On Eileen"appears on,I'd have a wad of cash. It is understandable why they are on here since they were heavily rotated videos on MTV in 1983. My only compliant is that an accompanying video compilation DVD or VHS Tape is not made. Also why not more CD compilations for the Class of 1985,1985,1986 and so on.... ... Read more

Editorial Review

The joke's starting to look a little worn around the edges. It's facile to observe that the people who toss the phrase "family values" around don't have Limp Bizkit, Korn, Filter, or Primus in mind when they talk about wholesome entertainment. Well, duh. That said, this a solid collection for those who like the aforementioned bands and their allies, though just about all of this stuff is available in other versions. One highlight is Staind's heavy-duty "Mudshovel," though the best performances overall are from Limp Bizkit, which explains why they provide 4 of the 16 tracks on the album and no other act serves up more than 2. Tracks from Method Man and the Crystal Method weirdly break up the metal that dominates, and there's the obligatory acoustic bonus track, featuring Aaron Lewis of Staind and Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. 4-0 out of 5 stars Falls a little short, but has some redeeming tracks...
All in all the concept behind 'Family Values' is a great one...get the most popular bands that parents would never want their children to listen to and throw them on one stage.KoRn started it, then Limp Bizkit carried it on, and then Staind, so on and so forth. This effort, fronted this time by Limp Bizkit, falls a little short of the first album (fronted by KoRn) and the third (fronted by Staind) but it does have some redeeming value.Lets take it one band at a time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fans of nu-metal & alternative will enjoy this compilation...
I picked this CD up at my local music store several months back after seeing Staind and Filter were featured. I have since, listened to this album release and have quietly enjoyed the bands like Primus, Korn and Limp Bisqit who I rarely have heard of until now. The highlights for me were 'Mudshovel' by Staind and the acoustic 'Outside' sung in tandem by Aaron Lewis of Staind and Fred Durst of Limp Bisqit.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good bands, decent collection.
I would think this would appeal mostly to those who saw this tour, but it's still a good disc. I don't like it as much as the 1998 tour, but it's still good. "Limp Bizkit" dominates this collection, but there's still good songs from "Primus", "Staind", and "The Crystal Method". The live "Outside" is the bonus song here, and "Durst" also covers "I Would For You", which is an old "Jane's Addiction" song, though it's not near as great as the original. Overall this is good if you like the bands, otherwise it doesn't have much "Value". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great punk compilation
This is one of the better punk comps i've heard, and has a lot more varied stuff on it than an "oi" comp would. There are some classic songs on here from Wasted Youth, TSOL, Agent Orange, and Flipper.Pretty much all of it is good but those are the best.I'd recommend getting Agent Orange's "Living in Darkness" or TSOL's "Dance With Me" if the songs on here appeal to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Germs rule!
This is one of the better compilations that I own.It is great, but itcould have had a better germs cut.Darby Crash rules!

4-0 out of 5 stars Despite the cheesy title and cliche' cover, it's a keeper
Sure, any compilation like this reeks of cash-in, and in the realm of "punk rock" that's a sin, but suspend your prejudices for a time and realize that the songs here are vital.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A review for Guadalcanal Diary / Murray Attaway fans only
There are enough other reviews to give you a sense of what this comp is (and isn't).I'm only adding to the voices, to say that Guadalcanal fans should note that this version of "Allegory" is NOT the version on _In Thrall_.It's a much more acoustic, stripped-down version. Not better or worse than the album, just different. If you're a completist, you need this. If you thought _In Thrall_ was overwrought, you might really like this "Allegory."
5-0 out of 5 stars Information on the band Cell PLEASE!!!
So this aint no typical review.I love this collection, though I can see why others would not.One thing though - if anyone has any information on the band Cell can you please give it to me.I picked up their two albums slo blo and living room as a teen from the dollar bin at Wherehouse and have recently re visited them at 24 years old and decided they hold releveance to my musical progression. How some of these songs can be completely forgotten or categorized as grunge nostalgia I consider obscene.I would kill or die to be able to write some of these songs, especially the guitar excess.Anyway hit me up at two70out@yahoo.com with any info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great compiliation to have, especially if you got it when it came out
There are highs and lows- you'd expect by the names that this would be a blowout album. Though I was blown away at first listen, that's not fair to pin on any rarity comp disc. I've seen many in my day and quite frankly this one shows a lot of promise and history has delivered. I am biased because I've owned this disc since it came out. That said, it beats most soundtracks - a hard thing to do. At this point I think the bragging rights on this one lie with how long you've owned it. A piece of history. ... Read more
