4-0 out of 5 stars Only 4 because the indecision stuff is weak
If you are a fan of shai hulud, you must get this, if not, get it anyway and you will be a fan. However, indecision just does nothing for me.The later stuff like, "Release the Cure" is awesome, but these songs are weak. But the shai hulud songs are as good as ever, they don't and can't make a bad song.

5-0 out of 5 stars All other bands shy in comparison to Shai Hulud, best ever
When it comes to metal infused hardcore, no one does it better then the masters known as Shai Hulud. They're style is one of totallity,it brings together the most classical elements ofthe best hardcore bands and thebest metal bands. If your looking for metal-core with heart, soul, andtrue emotion then go no further. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Alright let's look.
I admit it, this is not the best compilation album. I suggest you only buy this if you know what you are getting into, this isn't for anyone new to the music. And uh, "Music Fan" or whatever, if you honestly think that 'grunge' brought about the whole glam pop thing you need to seriously take a closer look, grunge did nothing to bring about glam pop it has existed for years. If I remember correctly Nirvana are the guys who knocked Micheal off the top of the pop charts? And yeah, Grunge is slow, the guitars are played really screwy and the the lyrics are dark...I prefer ameteurs playing that's what punk was about I thought? Look at the Ramones...At any rate the cd is ok the scene itself was awesome.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sub Pop creates an aura
Another Sub Pop compilation filled with as many "lesser" bands as household names. Not quite the quality (in the music or the packaging) as the Sub Pop 200 re-issue, but a nice snapshot of what came to be known as The Grunge Era.
4-0 out of 5 stars a sound piece of grunge history.
Anyone that says the only well known artist on this compilation is Nirvana is incredibly unfamiliar with the grunge genre.Let's not forget Mark Lanegan and the Screaming Trees, Afghan Whigs, Mudhoney, etc, all just as noteworthy in the genre's history.

5-0 out of 5 stars High school soundtrack redoing Elementary school soundtrack
It's for a great cause, this album, despite what rightwingers might think of it.If you are old enough to remember the old K-Tel compilations (predates Now That's What I Call Music!) like Chartaction '83, Streer Beat or Hit Mix, you probably heard the originals on one of those. Before alternative got silly, several of the "biggies" (Sonic Youth, Redd Kross, Superchunk, Mudhoney, The Muffs and an uncredited Soul Asylum doing the Vibrators' "Baby Baby") and some lesser knowns put out this album of cover tunes. It was too early in some respects for the 1980s retro boom of late, but 13 years on they still hold up pretty well and the price is right.I got this when I was in high school and still listen to it quite frequently.
3-0 out of 5 stars Forgotten alt-bands of the 90s remember alt-bands of the 80s
When bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam redefined the "alternative rock" genre in the early 90s, it became easy to forget that the 70s and 80s had alternative scenes of their own.4-0 out of 5 stars The dream of a Tribute lover
Many people hate tribute records. Many people like them. I am one of the later. I accept that they are often made in a careless way, looking like the artist involved didn't care too much for something they are doing free. This is not the case here. Almost all the covers are taken very seriously, with love. After all those are the songs that really got a lot of people into music. And we are talking about some heavyweigths here: Sonic Youth (alma mater of the project), Mudhoney, Yo la Tengo... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An ok tribute album
I have never really been crazy about The Doors. To me, some of their songs have a tendency to be too long. Secondly, I am not a classic rock fan. I bought "Darken My Fire" because I loved the two Madonna tribute albums and the Tori Amos tribute album that Cleopatra Records released a few years ago so I thought "Darken My Fire" would be something of interest. In general I think Cleopatra Records has gone overboard with the tribute albums and really needs to take a break from churning out more tribute albums. "Darken My Fire" is interesting to say the very least however I wouldn't rank it as good as the two Madonna tribute albums or even comes close to the Tori Amos tribute album. It just lacked the magic that I felt that the other tribute albums for Madonna and Tori Amos had. There were a lot of hits and misses. I loved The Mission Uk's interpretation of "Love Me Two Times". It was very dark and sinister. I also liked Nosferatu's "People Are Strange" (my favorite song by The Doors), and Mephisto Waltz's "Peace Frog". I didn't like The Newlydeads' "Hello, I Love You". Although I never liked the song to begin with but at least I thought The Doors' version was ten times better which is saying a lot. I wasn't wild about Eating Crow's "L.A Woman" or The Electric Hellfire Club's "Light My Fire". I think The Doors' music is like New Order and Depeche Mode, don't cover their music because no one can out do the original versions. Thanks to tribute albums like "Darken My Fire", I consider tribute albums nowadays so unbelievably cheesy and pointless.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Proto-goth!
Been WAITING for a buncha goths to make this exact album and honor these guys properly! A decent effort for Cleopatra. Some weak spots as usual (I would love to find one compilation that doesn't have the Electric Hellfire Club on it), but the stronger songs make the album worth buying, at least a used copy.3-0 out of 5 stars Even darker than the Doors?
Various groups perform gothic interpretations of Doors' songs in this CD; another way to describe the music, with its murky instrumental and bass line overlays, could be "gothic baroque."The best songs are those that most preserve the basic melodies while employing overlays that fit the texture of the song. This is definitely accomplished in "Strange Days," perhaps the strongest track, in which the atmosphere is preserved and embellished, and "Hello I Love You," in which The Newlydeads pretty much follow the original but intensify the rhythm blasts and sing more forcefully than Jim."The Spy" interposes a supplemental fast-paced beat to contrast with the otherwise-followed slow tempo of the original.Lovely female vocals from Rhea's Obsession grace "End of the Night," which is very pretty and one of the best covers."Peace Frog" is also strong, and the most regular-sounding rock number.Among the long cuts, "Riders on the Storm" is well-done, great synth, and "The End" is intermittently successful, but "When the Music's Over" is too much of a carbon copy of the original and the singing is wishy washy.Warning 1:"Light My Fire" and "LA Woman" are not so hot, with grungy vocals and blah truncated instrumentals, and the most glaring omission is "Break on Through"--inexcusable.Warning 2:Keep in mind that one thing everyone, even Doors detractors, agrees on is that The Doors are listenable.Such a fluid sound, no fuzz boxes, synth distortion, etc. This set, while interesting, is not very listenable, with mostly gruff vocals, some distortion, and heavy texture. While it may not be totally a case of not wanting to listen to this CD more than once, you probably will not have the impulse to put it on in most of your moods. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hit random and bang your head
A sleeper that demonstrates what happens when you take a bunch of indy bands and give them a good cause. In this case the cause is to support the suicide helpline, and the bands provide some of their best.Thrice's "Silhouette" sounds almost as good as Killswitch Engage's "End of Heartache" (although without Howard Jones' vox potenta), Shadows Fall unleashes a live version of its simultaneously psychotic and pensive "Thoughts Without Words." Contributions by Poison the Well, Silverstein, and Further Seems Forever add to the mayhem.Consider it aggressor ownership of the auditory senses.

5-0 out of 5 stars simply mindblowing
When I bought this CD, all I was thinking about was the artists on this CD since I had purchased the previous Plea for Peace Take Action vol. 2 compilation and I knew it would be good. This CD was simply amazing. A good all around effort and the Cd introduced me to bands that I have never heard of before but like them now such as The Beautiful Mistake, Copeland, Fall Out Boy, Brendan Benson and the Wellfed Boys, etc. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great music - and funny as hell
Note: People with no sense of humor will probably not appreciate this CD. Yes, it is wacky. Yes, they are singing English phonetically and not making a whole lot of sense (at least, the ones in English are). But if you ever wanted to hear what an alternate universe where Paul McCartney and Sam & Dave were Japanese but still sang in English might sound like, buy this CD. It's a very weird spin on some classic 60's hits that makes you feel as if you've never heard these songs before. Also the bands are really good musically - tight and inventive. The two best bands on this particular comp. are The Burns ("I Saw Her Standing There") and The Voltage ("Hold On, I'm Coming") as far as I'm concerned.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...
I bought this because--largely--I expected it to be over the top and psychotic. I was right. But it's also *surprisingly* good, although one gets the sense that there's certainly more interesting material out there that could've been tapped (this release comprises mostly Crown and Teichiku items, which is in itself limiting). What is included, however, it surprising both in its quality and wackiness; the bizarre cover of "Fire" is, well, strange, but it's also very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Rocks!
For all of you 60's fans out there, and I know you're listening, buy this!Seriously, I think this is an incredible album.I've been buying j-pop for a little while now and the info inside is a real jem too.I hope thisone comes out with a second volume... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting mix...
The " Lullabye " cover by Leatherstrip is the best { not better than the original has another reviewer suggested }; perfection would have been achieved by inserting Robert Smith's voive instead of the Leatherstip vocalist, who doesn't have much range.5-0 out of 5 stars A great tribute to a great band
I love this tribute to The Cure. The bands paying tribute are all really good industrial/gothic bands.Leaether Strip's version of Lullaby is incredible. There are actually a number of songs from this CD I really enjoyed.100 Years by Nosferatu, Jumping Someone Else's Train by Kill Switch ... Klick, Sinking by The Shroud (Really good), Let's Go to Bed by Crocodile Shop, Shake Dog Shake by Ex-Voto (exceptional), Pornography by Wreckage, A Night Like This by Test Infection (great), A Forest by Death Lies Bleeding, and Primary by Bell, Book and Candle. That is ten songs on a 13 song CD that I really liked.I can't say much more about how good this disc is than that. This is an industrial classic, and a wonderful and complex tribute to The Cure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some great covers...
But also a few pointless ones. I hate the song 'Killing an Arab' in the first place but the other covers make it well worth the price. I personally think 'Disintegration' by Razed In Black is the best cover on here, 'Lullaby' by Leather Strip is also good and so is Nosferatu's cover. I think the song selection on here isn't the best, either, but considering that these covers are done mainly by Goth/ Darkwave bands...this album is really cool, and The Cure is a very influential band so they completely deserve this. I recommend this album to fans of The Cure who like other Goth bands...if you are a fan of The Cure (ungothy) pop songs you will Not like this, but any good Goth would like this =] ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!
I've had this cd for about a year or so, and i still listen to it at least once a week.I pretty much like every song on this cd, except that i don't care for the Frenzal Rhomb song, but mayve i'll just have to listen to it some more. This cd has some really good unreleased tracks, but my favorites are the ones by Anti-Flag, Good Riddance, Sick of it All, Rise Against, and Tilt. The Lagwagon songs on here is also excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars great punk compilation
I bought this as a sort of intro to punk music - it was cheap, and I wanted the Anti-Flag and Propaghandi songs that were on it. Not only do those two songs ("Seattle was a Riot" and "War is Peace, Slavery is Freedom...") kick [...], but I love the songs by Fabulous Disaster, Tilt, Sick of It All, and Lagwagon as well. It's a pretty good CD for being a spur of the moment [...] purchase. It's a nice addition to all the AFI and Anti-Flag in my collection.

    5-0 out of 5 stars top-ten-desert-island-fave!
Every time I play this people ask to see the CD case and want a copy for themselves. It's one of my top-ten-desert-island-faves so I enjoy turning my friends on to it.I love every track except for maybe the lyrics of "lyin' a** b**".It's just a little too realistic a portrayal of a dysfunctional relationship. If you love ska or are just beginning to be interested and want an album that will introduce you to new bands and not have any throw-away tracks on it, buy this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong
A strong Ska piece. There isn't much of the muddy sounds the punk influence seems to produce. The high point of this collection is "Hung Up" by Bim Skala Bim. A better slection is Sak Down Her Way: Vol. II.But if you have that go for this one too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Sampler
This 2-disc set provides a good sampler of some of the best artists in the punk genre, including several live performances.I was unfamiliar with some of the artists included on this set, and was delighted to have discovered some fine new music.Among the notable cuts is what appears to be a demo of the classic New York Dolls' song "Personality Crisis".For anyone who enjoys punk, this is an excellent pick. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars First and Best of the Matador Comps
44 tracks for $10 is an incredible value.Besides classics from Matador mainstays like Pavement, Yo La Tengo and Guided By Voices, this 2 CD set also contains great tracks by lesser known bands like Helium, Railroad Jerk and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282.The liner notes are also fun.Consider buying a used copy for a couple bucks and loading it onto your MP3 player.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Sleater-Kinney isn't a Matador band
An earlier review contains an extremely obvious error: Sleater-Kinney isn't on this compilation because S-K IS NOT on Matador!
    4-0 out of 5 stars What's up?
Matador Records is known for its selection of outstanding musical artists -- the bands that are/were signed to them range from indie-rock legends to obscure gems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hi, boys and girls!
This is a compilation album of "politically incorrect" songs. The album features mostly New Wave songs, plus a few novelty songs. Some of the songs are good, some are not so good.Definitely a mixed bag.

3-0 out of 5 stars still in search
I had been looking for the jukebox recording of The Rodeo Song, done by The Parriot Band??? At least that's what it looked like on the juke at a redneck bar, flip side had The(...)Song. The song on this cd sounded way too flat for my taste. Oh,Well. But still searching for the one I heard many years ago.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rodeo Song original
I think the artist--Gary Lee, is the original artist of the Rodeo Songs, although there is a version that was recorded by a local Pittsburgh band (which I think is Gary Lee) that I have on a 45.I am always looking for the CD versions for the sound quality.I purchased another novelty collection CD witht he Gary Lee version on it.Don't know what it sounds like yet... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A very eclectic compilation indeed.
The selection of tracks on this compilation is strange to say the least.I have this CD since it first came out in '96 and I always found people with different musical tastes liking one part of it and hating the other. If you are into synthpop/electro you'll love to find alternative versionsof hits byApoptygma Berzerk, Neuroactive, Leaether Strip, Birmingham 6. However if death industrial/power electronics is your cup of tea you'llfind yourself vigorously skipping the aforementioned numbers to get to thecore of ghoulish soundscapes of In Slaughter Natives, Reptilicus, andRemyl. From what I understand the purpose of this CD was to introduce theScandinavian "goth/industrial" scene to the wider audience ratherthen represent a particular genre of music.Since 1996 many of the electrobands represented here have become quite big worldwide and many wonderfuland exclusively deathindustrial/powernoise comps have been released bylables such as Cold Meat Industry and associates.I suppose this CD willremain a want only to fans of either of the bands who can't find thepresented version of a song elsewhere. ...
