5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing list.
From the first tune on this disc, Burn by The Cure, you get sucked in.The songs take you on a ride through the movie that you can close your eyes and follow which turns out to be a beautiful ride indeed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Soundtrack That Compliments A Great Movie...
I remember the first time I watched THE CROW movie when it came out in theaters and loving the movie, and sadly learning that Brandon Lee's poetic performance was undercut by his premature death. It was an unfair end for such a brilliant performance, and guaranteed had he still been alive to do the sequel, it would have done almost as well as this stellar movie did. The soundtrack almost eclipses the movie itself, but the movie and the music both match. The sound that dominates most of this soundtrack falls into alternative, metal, goth, industrial, and even a touching ode to close the album.
5-0 out of 5 stars The suitable soundtrack
The Crow is my favorite movie of all time, hands down. The moving love/death/life/revenge plot coupled with Brandon Lee's exceptional performance and very talented supporting cast is more than enough than for The Crow to stand the test of time. However, probably the strongest point of the movie lies in its truly awesome soundtrack that captures the mood of the movie perfectly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad. Bad. Bad.
No emotional depth and doesn't seem to capture the spirit of the songs. Some variation on Cohen's songs are very good but this collection doesn't achieve the spirit of the music on any level.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic album in its own right, a must have in your collection!
Forget about who wrote the songs, forget about trying to make comparisons, forget about whether or not the performances were worthy of a tribute.Simply take it as music.Leonard Cohen wrote great songs that here shows they were also great POP songs. So if you're into great music, especially pop songs, and can listen to music without biases or prejudices then you must pick up this disc. The first track "First We Take Manhattan" clearly exemplifies this. While a R.E.M. fan, this song is one of my favorites by them.Mike Mills as co-vocalist with lead singer Michael Stipes makes this an incredible track.Ian McCulloch has an incredible voice and this shows on "Hey That's No Way...."."I Can't Forget" sounds like any other great Pixies track. There are many other stand out tracks like That Petrol Emotion's "Stories of the Street," "Don't Go Home...," "Chelsea Hotel," "Hallelujah," and my favorite: Dead Famous People's "True Leaves No Traces," which transforms Cohen's beautiful lyrics into just a gorgeous pop song.Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars A middling tribute album
After spending the last few years wandering other musical landscapes, I rediscovered Leonard Cohen this year (years after being a mega LC geek in school) and especially wanted to seek this album out again. Read more

Damn, I havent even bought this CD but boy, talk about remeniscing, I think I spelled that right, hmm, I remmeber the skate board days, New Wave girlfreind, man....great CD, there's nothing like 80's New Wave, or just 80's Rock, the music now? Shoot, its all over produced and bland, I 'd rather listen to daeth metal than the music now, well, I actually do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another great one in the series
I've been picking up these in the "Compilations" section over the years, and have never stopped enjoying them.

Great CD with songs you remember as a kid. I really got it because of the "Tra La La" Song from the Banana Splits, but all the others are great re-makes; Hong Kong Phooey, Scooby Doo, Stop the Pigeon, Fat Albert's Theme, Spiderman.. and others.

I had recently purchased a copy for my friends son, who LOVES it, and since has been learning to play guitar! 2-0 out of 5 stars why surf music died
While this may sound negative for the sake of bashing, i grew up with surf music and really like it.Heck I play it (as i imagine some of the people interested in this genre might too).WHile ther are one or four somewhat intersting cuts- this is quantity not quality surf.
5-0 out of 5 stars surf mania!
The title of this alblum sounds a bit cheesy but the music in the CD is excellent. The songs sound much better on my stereo than the little speakers in my computer. This CD is a champ as far as giving you your moneys worth of songs. I could not find any songs I did not like to listen to and was very impressed with the Supertones songs on the alblum. While not quite as authentic as real 60's surf music I find the collection of songs here to be some of the very best of whats offered today in the modern day surf guitar sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great CD!
I picked this CD up after I purchased the other Golly Gee release "Rockabilly Rumble". Someone had recommended it and since "Rockabilly Rumble" was such a great record, I had to have this one as well. I was not disappointed at all. This is an incredible CD with almost and hour and a half of music! No boring tracks at all - and surf music can be boring. After listening to it all the way through I had to listen again and again. "War of The Surf Guitars" is definitely worth buying - even if you live in Texas and can't see the ocean ; ) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Above average tribute record...Drag the River steals show
Most tributes to great bands are actually pretty horrible, for all the obvious reasons. This one is not.The covers are faithful without being carbon copies.Great songs performed by a bunch of energetic, fresh bands.Highlights are the covers by the Ergs (I'm in Trouble), Druglords of the Avenues (Favorite Thing), Tiltwheel (Skyway) and the Draft (Little Mascara). The Queers monotone cover of "Unsatisfied" is horrible, but you should have seen that coming a mile away.Right, chip?

    5-0 out of 5 stars Emo/Punk Meets the 80's - Brilliant Match
I lived in the 80's.I love the 80's.I grew up listening to bands like New Order, Tears for Fears, OMD, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Siouxie and the Banshees, the Church, etc.You should know the drill. In my adulthood, I found emo/screamo (which equals punk according to groups listed on this cd) because these harken back to those days.Oh, it's different alright but the spirit is in the right place. So this compilation was exactly what I would have dreamt up.If you are an 80's lover looking for a primer of what bands you might enjoy, this CD is a great introduction.Bands such as Relient K, Sugarcult, Emergy, Halifax, Motion City Soundtrack will give you a great peak at current music. They don't always break new ground with new arrangements.I think the most inspired retread was Straight Up by Halifax. You will never hear that song the same way again.I was amazed how a frivolous dance song suddenly had musical depth.Emery brings the best vocals of any track with their version of Holding Out for a Hero.Sugarcult holds their own quite nicely with I Melt with You.You will want to run out get these bands cds.Because I checked them all out shortly after these covers. They really are as good as their covers on this CD.Give it a try.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get Over The Title
First off, in this day & age...anything titled "punk" is not the 70's rebellion most want it to be. Nowadays, punk is anything with a distortion in the amp. But you know what? Get over it...times change. It's all about the music, not the label.
3-0 out of 5 stars Punk?
Johnny Rotten it ain't.When did punk go pop? These versions are well done, and I'll be the first to admit that I'm not familiar with many of the groups covering the songs (sorry, I'm an old guy), but this is not punk anything. It's pure pop.In fact I find it pretty hard to believe that any of these groups have a handle on the spirit of what PUNK was all about in the first place.

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad
If you grew up in the Eighties most of these songs will be familiar to you. Some of these are quite good ( Only You, Oblivious, Come Back and Stay ) and hold up nicely after repeated listening. Some do not, unfortunately. And for the record, the version of Our Lips Are Sealed here ( by the Fun Boy Three ) is NOT the original, as stated by the reviewer above. It was recorded after the Go-Gos did it ( although the lead singer of FBT - Terry Hall - co-wrote the song with Jane Weidlin of the Go-Go's). Overall, a fun nostalgia trip. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Soup and Dreams are the best ones on this album
In my opinion this is one of the best "90's" albums in my collection.(by the way this isn't a box set... lol) all it is is a 2 cd set. Anyways, as you read in the title, i think that soup by blind melon and dreams by the cranberries are the two best songs on this album. Most of the songs like the ones by the violent femmes, the rollins band, and of course who could forget...nine inch nails.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blind Melons Performance of 'Soup'... Worth the price and more
5 stars for Blind Melons Performance of 'Soup'... Worth the price and more. That and Nine Inch Nails 'Happiness in Slavery'. I've had this since it came out, haven't really listened to it since, cept' the pre mentioned songs. But it's worth all of it just for those 2 songs.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'll say goodbye to taste
Thankfully I was able to check this thing out of the library to try out, so at least I'm not an angry, ripped-off fan...just angry. The artists used and their renditions of these classics are as inappropriate as a hypothetical Liberace interpretation of Aerosmith, or perhaps a Manilow take on Black Sabbath.
3-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Superstar
This really should have included Bonnie Bramlett's (also the songs co-writer) soulful recording of Superstar instead of whatever that is on there. The Sonic Youth version sounds like Darth Vader on helium. The standouts here are: Shonen Knife Top of the World, Babes in Toyland Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft (a perfect song for Kat), The Cranberries - (They Long to Be) Close to You, 4 Non Blondes Bless the Beasts and Children, Sheryl Crow - Solitaire, Bettie Serveert - For All We Know. If you like any number of those artists this is worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take It At Face Value And Enjoy
I just don't get the polarized reviews regarding this pleasant little tribute album. The haters are either neurotic Carpenters-worshipers who seem to have insider info on the "cynical" nature of this compilation made by some talented artists of the mid-90s, or they are simply haters of the Carpenters as a concept. Look people, this album has some great music on it. The interpretations are respectful and are not pure rip-off copies of the originals, which would have been foolish. No one sounds like Karen Carpenter. What they are is worthy interpretations that show off the talents of the artists while keeping the melodic pop of the classic songs in question as their backbone. Japanese ladies Shonen Knife do a great indie power pop version of Top of the World, Sonic Youth's under water sounding Superstar is mesmerizing, Sheryl Crow and the Cranberries do sturdy renditions of Solitaire and Close To You, and all the other artists do credible jobs. This is simply a tuneful tribute album and a pleasant musical experience, for both Carpenters and non-Carpenters fans alike, for fans of classic pop melodies or 90s indie music. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

No less a suspect pop-culture authority than Howard Stern has repeatedly proclaimed that "everyone loves lesbians!" But what do lesbians love? Rhino Records boldly claims to know the musical answer to that question on this richly eclectic collection of female artists compiled for a lesbian audience. And if that's a bold--if readily transparent--marketing move, it shouldn't distract one from the charms of this cross-genre compilation. The songs here run the gamut from acoustic angst (Ani DiFranco) to pop (Wendy and Lisa, Jill Sobule), MOR (Taylor Dayne), folk (Two Nice Girls), and dance (Fem 2 Fem). k.d. lang contributes "Just Keep Me Moving," while cult fave Phranc gives Herman's Hermits hoary"Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" a new slant. The emotions range from intense eroticism (particularly Janis Ian's sultry "Ride Me Like a Wave") to the steely pragmatism of Sandra Bernhard's remake of Paul Simon's "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent covers album....
I ordered this from Amazon.com since I'm in the UK and this title wasn't available from Amazon UK. It took about 2 weeks to arrive and was worth the wait. As other customers have said, as a rule Lennon/Beatles cover songs aren't much good at all but this CD is a notable exception.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best cover album i've come across
I got this disc at a used CD shop in town for six dollars, I wasn't expecting much, as most of the Lennon cover/tributes i've heard were pretty lacking. I was dead wrong. There is only one bad cover on this dics, every other is great!3-0 out of 5 stars An OK tribute to Lennon
I must admit that the reason I bought this CD is because I'm a fan of John Lennon and of the grunge scene of the early 1990's.So needless to say, I enjoyed the cover of "I Don't Want To Be A Soldier" by Mad Season (LAYNE STALEY'S VOCALS ARE ALWAYS AMAZING) and "Steel and Glass" by Candlebox, but for me the best track was "Working Class Hero" by The Screaming Trees.Mark Lanegan's voice is unbelievable and this cover is closest in my opinion to the original in quality.A pleasant surprise were Mary Chapin Carpenter's surprisingly good cover of "Grow Old With Me" and the cover of "How Do You Sleep" by The Magnificent Bastards.Collective Soul does a very good cover of Jealous Guy.Now, on to the bad.No surprise The Red Hot Chili Peppers would be found here with their cover of "I Found Out", I never liked "Power To The People", so I was going to skip it anyway, but The Minus Five didn't do all that bad with it.It actually shocked me that an established band like Cheap Trick couldn't pull off "Cold Turkey".Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A victory for "Victoria'.
This disc was released as a benefit for "Victoria Williams", but I feel like I've benefited from it myself as well. Her songs are all good, but the group of musicians covering them is even better. "Pearl Jam" probably got the most people to buy this, however I like the songs done by "Soul Asylum", "Evan Dando", "Waterboys", and "Lucinda Williams" just as much. "The Jayhawks" and "Matthew Sweet" do a good job too. Basically it's just a really good bunch of music. Also, there's currently 121 used copies on here for sale, so it shouldn't be too hard to come by.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best comps
Not So Quiet on the Western Front is one of the best comps because it offers most of the best hardcore/punk from California and Nevada at the time. I definitly recommend this to anyone who is new to hardcore,Check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive NorCal Punk Compilation
This is it; this is the music that liberated thousands of my fellow Northern Californians. There's some truly kick-ass $hit on here. And while the styles range tremendously, every song on this album is good. And then some are GREAT, like "Pay Salvation" by Los Olvidados or "Breakout" by UXB. If you like Maximum Rock and Roll, you will love this album! This is a monument to nonconformity and I highly recommend it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars MINDLESS MUSIC FOR THE MINDLESS MASSES
If you are a self-loathing manic depressive who wears pointy shoes and black fingernail polish then you probably own this already, the 80's were a horrible decade for music and trying to revive it with newer bands is equally bad.

LIKE MANY TRIBUTE ALBUMS THEY ARE UNEVEN OR JUST SUCK CUZ THE BANDS ARE ALL UNKNOWN GARAGE BANDS. I FEEL THAT A TRIBUTE ALBUM SHOULD BE AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL RECORDING IF NOT BETTER THEN THEN ORIGINAL. SOME OF THESE BANDS KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARK AND OTHERS JUST STRIKE OUT.HERE IS MY QUICK SUM UP.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been Better
Fearless Records has been putting these compatibles out for years, having today's up-and-coming artists cover songs that have been populer. But in this release the songs are better left with the original artists. While it features Gin Blossoms' "Hey Jealousy" done by Hit the Lights, Copeland's version of "Black Hole Sun" and "Gym Class Heroes" doing a version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' ballad "Under the Bridge" they all are typical and lacking excitement.
    3-0 out of 5 stars :(
I figured this album would be awesome...but the song choices aren't too great. Most of the songs are pretty good and everything but some of the ones they chose aren't even big hits of the 90s. This cd was somewhat of a disappointment to me. I only enjoyed about 1/2 of the cd. Hopefully the next punk goes...isnt horrible. I was actually looking forward to this cd to coming out to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Punk
The name of the CD is misleading, the artists performing the covers are not really punk bands. I still enjoy the cd, its different, I've been pretty impressed by all the covers. Hearing each artists way of remaking the songs is pretty cool, and hearing some new twists to some old favorites. So as long as your not looking for a "punk" cd this is actually pretty good. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mullet Time
BTW, Nerf Herder's great goof, "Santa's Got A Mullet," is included here as a hidden track. Originally released on "High Voltage Christmas Rock" - according to the band, a "low budget, half-assed Christmas EP recorded (while drunk) to give out to our friends." In 2001, Nerf Herder had 1000 copies of the "Christmas Rock" CD pressed up professional-style for general consumption.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good music? Perhaps. Punk? No, not really.
When I think "punk", I think Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Ramones, Crass, Operation Ivy, Subhumans, that sort of thing. Even casting this 'punk' net widely, most of the songs on this CD do not belong even to the periphery of the category. The rap song that starts the CD is more punk than some of other songs on there. This is not to say that the music is bad, exactly, but if you're looking for punk in the sense I've characterized above, you will be sorely disappointed. Buyer beware.

4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoy christmas
I love christmas music so i was excited when i picked this up.Even though i wouldnt exactly call this a "punk rock" christmas cd, theres lots of good emo/pop/punk bands on it.I do enjoy the 12 days of christmas song. This cd is filled with emo/pop/punk bands playing there own christmas songs and some holiday favorites.I enjoy listening to this but i like my christmas cd's i make better but i would get this if u like christmas music done by emo type bands and some pop/punk bands. ... Punk O Ramo Vol. 1 is the best period you don't even have to hear all of the other ones. You can tell this one is just the most original because it's the first...duh! Some as they call themselves "punk" bands of day suck. They just suck like New Found Glory and Story of The Year, NFG has basically nothing but saying things that have no point, and Story of The Year are basically just covering songs off of Good Charlotte's The Young and The Hopeless. Trust me on that one. Get it and you'll see EXACTLY what I mean. But anywayz, Punk O Rama Vol. 1 is the best of all. You HAVE to have it in your punk collection!!!!!
