1-0 out of 5 stars TOO LITTLE PRESSURE
Like reviewer 1, I also owned the 1980 version of Too Much Pressure on vinyl, a record I very much liked. This is The Selector all right, but, unless my memory completely fails me, this is not the 1980 version of Too Much Pressure and it is not anywhere near as good a record. Not recommended if you want the real thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a weird version, or I am just weird?
I bought this on vinyl in 1988, or at least a Selecter album from 1980 entitled "Too Much Pressure."It had all these songs on it, with the exception of the cover of "Madness" with Prince Buster, as well as more songs. It also had a completely different cover (black & white with some rude boy in a suit stressing out...from the pressure, get it?).I do not know what gives with this.I would look more into the difference of versions and availability of the old before getting this version. Then again, doing "Madness" with Prince Buster is probably pretty impressive in and of itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic "English" SKA
Run - don't walk - to get this oh-so-fine and forgotten album from the Ska band, The Selector. They were, along with the English Beat, a particular favorite of mine, capably mixing Ska with bits of Pop and inventiveinstrumentation.Highly listenable and a definite "must" if youeven think you like this kind of music. If you're already a Ska-fan scoopup this CD now. ... Editorial Review

Fuelled by the ska of Prince Buster ("Madness"), and inspired by the insanity of British music, right from the start Madness were a quintessentially English band. Two-tone more by association than fact, they came to the fore at the same time as the Specials, with a ska beat, a pop heart, and a lunatic smile (who else would update "Swan Lake" in such an unorthodox way?). While the title track lives on beyond them, there were plenty of other gems here, including "Night Boat to Cairo" and "My Girl." The Nutty Sound was infectious as measles, but a lot more fun. 5-0 out of 5 stars They went..................one step beyond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey you!!!!!!!!!, lately Madness have come to my mind due to young advertisers for alcoholic beverages that are currently trying to introduce good taste in music to the depressing likes youth have in this days in Mexico (or maybe this advertisersare snob and try to impress ignorant fools i dont know), one of the first memories i have in music in my life is definitelly with Madness, actually i think it was the first one, before Beatles, before Zep, before Presley before Kiss or any other artist. I should have been like seven or eight years old when i liked to watch the Madness videos that were transmited saturday morning between cartoons, before all that space were filled with advertising as today, i liked that band when i was a child and i love them today cuts like "just another day" , "nigth boat to Cairo", "Michael Caine" ,"my girl" and of course "one step beyond"are timeless classics , band such as The Mighty Mighty Bostons and many others cant deny Madness influence they were plenty funny and genious, One Step Beyond is the debut album actually neither themselves were capable to achieve a bigger sucess after this one but the roots of ska punk are there untill the end of time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing disappointing here..
I remember first listening to this and loving every single second of it. I just listened to it about 10 minutes ago and loved every single second of it even harder.
5-0 out of 5 stars One Step Beyond Rules!
Buy this CD at any price. You will not regret it. It's melodic, fun, and timeless. One Step Beyond is their best. I don't think they ever repeated the magic that is on this CD, but their second release "Absolutely" album is very good as well, and should not be overlooked. I think I may even like it more than The Specials first effort. Is that blasphemy? ... Read more

Editorial Review

For most Americans, Madness's career started and ended with the 1982 MTV staple "Our House." In Britain, however, the group is considered one of the country's greatest singles bands of all time. This pivotal album helps explain why. The seven-piece's nutty ska sound is buoyed by some genuinely endearing melodies, suggesting that Madness were far more clever than their whimsical hit made them out to be. "Tomorrow's Just Another Day" rolls along on a warm, ascending melody, while "Primrose Hill" sounds a touch classical, as crisp horns waltz and a jumpy piano rhythm pushes the song along. The still-charming "Our House" serves as the disc's centerpiece. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding
This is one of those rare albums that you come back to time and time again. I have friends who have heard it once and said 'hmm, not bad' then they've come back and asked to hear it again. It's one of those that gets under your skin and makes you want to listen to it again and again.5-0 out of 5 stars fab memories
loved madness all the way through my teens5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible...
The more I listen to this album the more incredible it appears to be. I first got into Madness through fascination with the 2-Tone scene of the late 70's. The Specials were for awhile my "all time favorite band" but long after as my music tastes wandered from thing to thing and matured, it was Madness that endured. They are in a total league of their own, with the closest thing to them I have yet to find to be Blur(while they were still "British" and not wanting to become Americans.) I'm suprised no one has reviewed this album, because this album, like The Jam's All Mod Cons, Blur's Parklife, and before both of them the Kink's Village Green Preservation Society, is a work of art in British guitar-pop music tradition. My favorite Madness album was for a long time "Absolutely", their 2nd, and 2nd most ska orientated(as well as last overall "ska" album pretty much altogether),but overtime, Rise and Fall has become not only my fav Madness, but one of my all time favorite albums, period. The Kinks, the Small Faces, the Who, the Smiths, and today Blur and maybe Supergrass..Madness is one of the great British guitar pop bands with a sense of tradition, not to mention simply one of the greatest singles bands of all time and, at their peak, the most popular British band since the Beatles.(In Britain anyway, what do Americans know anyway?) ... This album showcases Madness's unique blend of styles.More often than not peopletend to chase the hits of most bands while ignoringthe obsure gems.Songs like Tommorrows dream show a lugubrious side to a band often labeled as "Nutty" and "Wacky." 5-0 out of 5 stars SHUT UP!

This is not one of Madness's better albums. They were just starting tochart the waters between ska and pop, and it was kind of rough sailing. The singles are okay, but the album as a whole is pretty much forgettable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WELCOME BACK NUTTY BOY'S
I was lucky to find this gem while I was in Singapore. This is way better then the UK import. It has two extra tracks that are found on the Love Struck single's. Then one that is not found anywhere. I HIGHLY suggest grabbing this up while its around. Dont miss out on the extra tracks. Its a great album for a bunch of old men that can still rock a concert hall (I witnessed them live in NYC April 2000). For the serious Madness fan this is a MUST BUY piece of the nuttiest sounds around.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Comeback
I admit to a sentimental attachment to this band and their music.I owned all of their original material on British Import, and even though I thought their "final" album (released 15 years ago) was disappointing, I bought this one with high hopes. It is a triumph.I disagree with one of the earlier reviewers:I thought the "Nutty Sound" was immediately recognizable ("Johnny the Horse" or "Drip Fed Fred" could have come from their "One Step Beyond" days) but songs like "Elysium" remind me of "Keep Moving".Listen carefully to "Saturday Night Sunday Morning":it's lyrics will bring a wry smile to your face..."everything has changed, just everything; it's not Saturday Night, it's Sunday Morning."That's probably the theme of this disc:the same band, a little older, a little more mature musically.I'm glad to have them back, making great pop music again.

5-0 out of 5 stars It grows on you
Like the previous reviewer, I wasn't really sure what to think when I first got this album.I'm a huge fan of the Madness of old, and this is a somewhat different album from what Madness was known for.But the more I listen to this album the more I like it.The good bands are the ones that aren't afraid to change over time, but are still able to maintain their relevance.I never grow tired of Johnny the Horse, no matter how many times I listen to it.Great musical hooks, plus a message to boot.4am is a great exploration of the emotions following a breakup (and actually a cover from one of Suggs' solo albums). The rest of the album remains solid, if quirky.I hope this won't be the last album from an incredible band. ...
