5-0 out of 5 stars great album
great album by a very good band.never get tired of.some classic songs.cannot think of a better album from the period.wonder what happened to the band - whatever such a waste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Rods Rock!
Not a dull moment on Eddie and the Hot Rods second LP. A masterful job from each member of the band from start to finish as they race thru the title track and other songs like "Telephone Girl" and "Ignore Them". If you like high energy rock, then you will love "Life On The Line".

5-0 out of 5 stars Second album crowns career of hard-rocking late-70s pub band
As British pub-rock fed into punk-rock, bands like Eddie & The Hot Rods were caught deliviously in the middle. They were more accomplished instrumentally (and compositionally) than the punks, but they caught thefire of the latter's energy and teenage abandon.Read more

What the hell

Reviews (161)

5-0 out of 5 stars Must be a clash, there's no alternative!
Why the heck this terrific album isn't mentioned as a Clash masterwork in the same breath as LONDON CALLING is a mystery to me. Coming out when it did at the tail-end of 1980, SANDINISTA! was so unlike anything else on the landscape of Punk and New Wave that I, for one, got drawn in right away. It's an album that dared to break the "Year Zero" mentality that ultimately made Punk and New Wave a cul-de-sac, and grab onto rockabilly, gospel, sound collages ala "Revolution #9," rap and lots and lots and lots of dub, all the while sounding like nobody else but The Clash. And you want classic toons? Try "The Magnificent Seven," "The Call Up," "Police On My Back" (which was penned by Eddy Grant), "Charlie Don't Surf" (probably the best track here) and a load of others.
3-0 out of 5 stars maybe I missed something?
I must have missed something because this CD really wasn't the greatest the clash has to offer. Sandinista Disc 1 just wasn't doing it for me. maybe they were trying really hard to explore different styles but it was kind of out there. nothing was really a good song and i feel kind of bad that this is taking up a spot in my CD wallet. The second song Hitsville UK sounded like it should have been playing on "Peewee Herman's Playhouse" or "Barney". it was like a disney sing a long with some random woman in it. what the hell? However, Sandinista Disc 2 i was much more appreciative of. This disc showed they hadn't totally gone off the deep end. so this is what i think. i'm more into thier self-titled album and give 'em enough rope. even london calling was great. this just didn't settle well at all. don't start here if you are a new fan. go for give em' enough rope or self-titled.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most important album since darkside of the moon
when i first listened to this album i have to admit that like most, i didn't completely get it. I had just recently heard the first three clash albums (my first real forray into classic punk) and immediately fell in love with them. this album however didn't grab me as quickly. well anyway after a few years of obsession with their early work i decided to give it one more try. this time i came prepared with 3-4 years of experience listening to the best in punk, blues, jazz, reggea, rockabilly and classic rock -- and more importantly a greater awareness of the socio-political world.sandinista is one of the deepest and most engrossing concept albums ive ever had the pleasure of encountering, it paints a painfully accurate portrait of the continuing struggle between the upper and lower classes and the blood and tears it creates -mainly for the latter, and of course throughout the album Mr. Strummer reminds us of the healing power that music and music alone has to bring us all together.

They were one the Only Band That Matters! Of course, that was when punk rock had to raise a ruckus to get noticed and restless youth turned to pop stars for political perspective. In retrospect, Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, and Topper Headon (the latter occasionally supplanted at the drum kit by Terry Chimes) didn't have all the answers. But they posed apt questions and had the grand sense of scale that their punk pathfinder rivals lacked--save accidental nihilists the Sex Pistols. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL DON'T TOUCH THAT DIIIIAAALLL!!!
Well, here it is - your Clash collection. Get _London Calling_, and get this. You will be set for a good couple of years, maybe for good. It's not often that I tell people to basically forget about buying an artist's albums and go straight to the boxed set, but in this case, it's the way to go. The compilers have done a great job, and there are just too many essential b-sides, promo tracks, etc. to possibly collect any other way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect...
Forget about the LP tracks. In fact, I'm not sure why a few tracks from the LP's were included here. What matters is the rare stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of One of the Best Bands Ever!
Since the release of their debut album in 1977, The Clash has become one of the most important and influential bands in rock history. They are the greatest punk band of all time. They may not have been the most punk. There is a big difference between being the most punk and the greatest punk band (I just wanted to point that out), and The Clash is the greatest punk band.No band from 1977-1983, with the possible exception of The Ramones, has had such an impact on rock music as The Clash. Here's the part where I justify this claim: The Police and U2 (many people would consider these two bands as the greatest of 1977-1983) are a couple of the greatest bands ever; we all know that. They were more commercially successful, but how many people decided to start a band after hearing either of those guys. How many successful bands had a direct influence from either the Police or U2, or tried to create a sound much like theirs. The numbers don't even compare to The Clash. The Clash did so much for music and were one of the most important and popular bands of one of the most important movements in rock.

3-0 out of 5 stars Siouxsie & The Banshees - 'Join Hands' (Geffen)
Originally released in 1979,'Join Hands' was the band's second lp.Clearly not their best work, but still a decent post-punk/new wave-like effort.Tunes I thought were decently written and played were "Poppy Day",the inspiring "Icon"(possibly the disc's best track altogether),"Playground Twist" and "The Lords Prayer".If you think you might be interested in this title,I recommend you listen to those thirty-second sound snippets before making up your mind. You never know.Personally,I think some fans might actually dig this CD more than I did.If you wish to check out some of the band's early work that is considered to be outstanding(by most),hunt down a copy of the previously mentioned 'The Scream' or 'Juju'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant ideas marred by some bad production
"Join Hands"
5-0 out of 5 stars The darkest of Siouxsie
Another brilliant Siouxsie album. Most thought this album was a terrible let down after the earth-shattering fabulosity of SATB's first album "The Scream" and thats certainly understandable. This is the densest, darkest, and least accesible of Siouxsie's albums. That said, however, all of SATB's albums are quite pop-friendly and accessible (certainly to our modern ears). Time has been very good to this album. Compare "Join Hands" to almost any recording made in the last ten years and "Join Hands" kicks ass. Siouxsie's vocals are at a peek on this album. "Icon" is a classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality Covers and Nirvana Collector's Item
The Wipers were a influential punk band that began in Portland, Oregon in 1977.Greg Sage lead the group to recording many "underground" albums that created a small yet humble following with their songs about hardship, pain and frustration.Their music struck a chord that influenced the founding members of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain (who orchestrated the concept of making this tribute album) and Krist Novoselic. Here are a collection of Wipers covers with strong effort put into all of the recordings.Nirvana's recording of "Return of the Rat" is amongst the strongest of the collection. In addtion, "Return of the Rat" is a rare collector's item for Nirvana fans since this recording is in its original state without any editing unlike the version found on the 2004 "With the Lights Out" boxed set. You'll find Honey's take on "No One Wants an Alien" to be a light semi-acoustic masterpiece with a beautifully sung rendition of Sage's lyrics. Poison Idea's cover of "Up Front" takes a rauccus and sonic approach you'll find nothing less than fantastic. If you aren't a fan of the Wipers, you will be after listening to this album.14 Songs for Greg Sage is a thoroughly enjoyable and fitting tribute.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect
I bought this because I heard Nirvana was on it. I also really like the Wipers because bands like The Wipers and Meat Puppets were good influenzes on Nirvana, unlike the crap that Devo and Led Zeppelin did

5-0 out of 5 stars Definately 5 Stars
This is a bunch of covers of Wipers songs, as you might have guessed. All the covers are really well done, and pay a positive tribute. Nirvana's cover is especially well done. Quality music for any fan of the Wipers. ... Read more

Amazing album containg great contemporary Irish bands and song mixed with classic hits.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
This is a great CD that offers a good introduction to some Irish bands (other than U2, of course!) that haven't received the air time they deserve. I have played this over and over since receiving it and it gets better with each playing.Suddenly discovered I'm a big fan of the Pogues, Thin Lizzy, and Rory Gallagher, among others. The bonus DVD, "Sightings of Bono," is a must see for any U2 fan.I love this CD/DVD set!

3-0 out of 5 stars HATE TO RUIN AN UNANIMOUS 5 STAR RATING !!!!!
Especially when there seems to be a cult of listeners reviewing this cd !!! Everybody here seems to agree on how fantastic the band, lyrics,Nick Blinko, etc, are, but nobody provides an accurate sonic description,so newcomers are not treated with a single clue as how this might actually meet their ears !!! OK,first of all,I'm no hair-farmer headbanger or old school crust detractor.I'm a lot into Conflict,Crass,Subhumans,Legion Of Parasites and a long etc. so......This CD clocks in at a bare 27' and is divided into 2 different Eps.The first one, crazy as it might sound, reminds of a slightly crustier GERMS,only with shouted, high pitched, distorted, saturated vocals mixed well above everything else, with a strangely tuned,less-distorted-than-usual guitarwork, and fat bass chords mated to a pounding, deep drumming. The second Ep,on the other hand, reminds a lot of early 90's japanese crust in the vein of EXTERMINATE,tempos varying from slow and grinding,to lightning-speed.Overall sound is very good, only complaint being volume too low,I really had to crank this up !!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this now - its timeless.
I would have died for this band when I 15 years old. I never heard anything like it - I was a Crass fan, loved Subhumans and the Icons of Filth but this band had something else - something much deeper and darker - something indefinable. I will never forget putting the needle of the record player down and hearing `Media Person' for the first time. No band or record I have heard since has had that same impact - I played it to anyone who would listen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real Oi! Real Punk!
For anyone who has been into punk or Oi! for any amount of time, you would know that true skinheads, and true Oi! has nothing to do with racism. Oi! started out as nothing more than brithish street punks who wanted to strip the glam and flash of punk, and keep it about just the music, rather than the image. The Business have been doing it right for years, and continue to do so on this album. Before you start popping off about skinheads all being a bunch of racists, do your homework and learn the real history!

5-0 out of 5 stars Long live Oi!
I don't know what the last reviewer has against skins.Real skins are NOT RACISTS.And not anymore "stupid" than punks. Both groups are just working class bastards that want some fun.Racist "skins" are called "Boneheads" because in the end, they are posers, and ruin the image of the true skinhead.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oi sucks, this album is punk and kicks ass!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Old-Fashioned Punk
Awwww, the memories. Growing up as a School-Kid in dismal London back in the 70's '999' were always my favorite punk band. More fun & less serious than some of their contemporaries (i.e.: Clash/Sex Pistols/Stiff Little Fingers) and certainly less precious than the admittedly brilliant 'Jam'. The songs were short, loud with a good healthy sing-along chorus. 'Emergency' was always their best known track but I think their most punkish songs (is that good English) are 'Nasty Nasty' & the speed-riff 'No Pity', I love trying to sing along the lyrics on that one (Not out loud of course). Although I could never quite get away from the fact that Nick Cash sounded a bit too much like Noddy Holder of 'Slade' on some tracks. Just check out 'Homicide' and see what I mean. All their good stuff is here of course and it's the legit original recordings too (unlike the rip-off CD 'Emergency' which I bought by mistake a while back). If you like good old fashioned punk with a pinch of fun and plenty of energy then pick this puppy up. This is the real old-school of the Punk Day's

4-0 out of 5 stars THESE OLD GEEZERS ROCK HARD !!!!!!!
INDEED !1996 compilation of all the early singles of this criminally underrated and vastly imitated (think Olga of Toy Dolls meets Peter And The Test Tube Babies) coz these dudes came first. They already were a pub rock band in 76,and jumped on the 77 punk wagon without loosing their rock'n roll edge.Fun/punk/rock'nroll/pub rock, the energy present in these bass driven, razor sharp, incredibly loud dual guitar songs is unbelievable, and so is the excellent sound I honestly did'nt expect from recordings this old.The last 3 songs flirt with reggae in typical 80's fashion but they work for me.Another outstanding release by Captain Oi ! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars At least 4 totally memorable, catchy UK pop punk hits here
'Fellin' Alright with the Crew', 'High Energy Plan, 'Homicide' and my favorite of a great set here, 'Let's Face It (the boy can't make it with girls)'.I probably literally haven't heard this lp (I guess 2 combined) in about 20 years. But I did buy this.Sure enough, the hits are awesome. However, the non-hits, that is 3/4's of the songs, are just ordinary. They've got a coupla live albums and I never cared much for them. But this studio stuff is perfection.I'll definitely vouch for these four songs though.Lively vocals, very memorable refrains and tight, radio perfect songs that, of course, never got played on U.S. corporate conservative radio (that I can remember). Some punx I knew back in the day (early 80's) had their records, typically maybe 1 or 2 of 'em.BUZZCOCKS were definitely more known and have been longer lasting. The VIBRATORS Pure Mania is a bit similar and is musically immortal but, they didn't last either.999 brought tons of joy to my musical life and now I can't wait to get hold of this or some other combo like a Complete Singles CD or something. Those 4 songs are some of the tighest, strongest in fun punk ever.chrisbct@hotmail.com ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Jam CD
First, I have every Jam record and I bought them in the 80's.I am a diehard Jam fan and just missed see them live. With that said, this was my favorite tape when I bought it. I listened to all the studio tapes first and wore out a few, including my favorite, Setting Sons. Then after years of listening to the same Jam songs over and over, "Extras" came out. 5-0 out of 5 stars This album is a MUST for any collector of The Jam
A real must for any collector of one of the best groups of the late 70s and early 80s.Who could resist such hidden lost classics like the acoustic Liza Radley? You will also get classics like "BurningSky" and "Eton Rifles" - both sound like Weller was alone inthe front room of his house.A real must have. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Looks like the awesome Why 12" + 1 or 2 of the 7"s
Ok, I admit it, I don't have this exact CD.And I'm too lazy to go thru my records and pull out the 12" and the 7"s and see which songs are on what so I can say what's on this CD.It's pretty clear that it's, definitely the unbelievable Why 12" which, by itself, I'd call, quite possibly, the finest hardcore punk rock 12" record of all time.It looks like, from the songs that they added 1 or 2 7"s, which were pre this Why 12".All those (5?) 7" records were great, classic Discharge.
