Editorial Review

Those who doubt the obsessive, unbridled affection Clash mainstay Joe Strummer held for traditional rock and R&B roots need only punch up virtually any track on this infectious collection of live and studio cuts from the 101ers, the raw yet accomplished band Strummer fronted just prior to his punk superstardom. While most such early-catalog excavations are suspicious and often spotty, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've Got Rabies From the Dogs of Love for This Album!
This is the first review of an album I've done on Amazon.I'm listening to it right now, and I'm just driven to tell everyone.... this is awesome!I love it.It is a must for fans of Joe Strummer.Don't expect The Clash. This is nothing like any Clash album. This is very Beatles-esque for the most part.It shows a lot of early, leather-clad rock influence.
4-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I found this
"Lonely Mother's Son," huh?More like Jail Guitar Doors. That track brought a big smile to my face as soon as the chorus started and I realized it was the song he'd later do as part of The Clash.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bloody brilliant!
This record feels like a resurrection not only of the sound of original punk but of the man, Joe Strummer himself. The sound of the 101ers is every bit as fresh as his later work with The Mescaleros yet takes its place with the music of its time.Letsagetabitarockin, the first on the album, is a brilliant start to the collection.Overall this record is one that should be added to any avid Clash, punk, or in general rock 'n roll fan. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Underrated and overlooked sophomore album
Starsailor blasted onto the music scene with their 2002 debut album "Love Is Here", which even made some waves in the US, and their follow-up album was hotly anticipated.
4-0 out of 5 stars One Step Forward; One Step Back
I think Silence Is Easy is a very good album. However, as with the last, I feel there is something missing. This time, it is not a lack of tightness or energy by any means. I feel that just when they've rid themselves of one major problem, they've come upon another, sadly.
3-0 out of 5 stars Music was saved
There's really nothing BAD about Starsailor. Their singing and instrumentation are pleasant but nothing special, and their Britpop-lite sound is unlikely to win converts, but please fans. "Silence is Easy," their sophomore album, has some truly wonderful songs, but stumbles over its own maudlin pretensions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great volume in the series
Honestly, this cd is worth the price for "Cue the Pulse to begin" alone. As others have said, that right there should get you to buy this cd without hesitiation. But, there are other fantastic songs on this cd that are equally great and make this cd satisfying. It ends, for instance, with "Wonderful Life" by Black.I hadn't heard that for almost 15 years or so, when I first had the Black full length cassette, which had an equally awesome song on it called "Everything is Coming Up Roses" that got tremendous airplay here in SF.So, point being, it was great to see the song included here, and brought back great memories, outside of the fact that it's a song with a great message.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
The music is very sexy, sand and happy, all the feelings that a gay man faces during life. Well for that matter the feeling that everyone faces.
5-0 out of 5 stars great thumpa thumpa

4-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual and contemplative world music.
I own 6 CDs by Dead Can Dance. They consistently produce a great product. It is always difficult to select a favorite CD because of the range of influences in the music and the balance between the songs where baritone Brendan Perry dominates and those songs in which Lisa Gerrard and her chanting to the goddess presentations predominate. Of the two, I prefer his voice however to read all the reviewers, it appears she is the favorite of most listeners.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dead Can Dance - Serpent's Egg
I will make no bones about it - the Serpent Egg's openener "The Host of Seraphim" is probably one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. The title describes it perfectly - this is the kind of William Blakesque biblical grandeur that can't be done justice in words, and it sets the standard for an album which, for the better part, manages to keep-up. TheSerpent's Egg is an album decidedly European in flavour, but drenched with the influences of so many cultures that it becomes something utterly unique - the Platonic ideal of shadowy antiquarianism. Through its reverberating corridors it paints a picture of forgotten times and places outside of time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Eternal Music
Into the Labyrinth is really a terrific album, but it's not best. Serpent's Egg is a perfect work. Here, Lisa's voice is just magical. And Perry's music is limitless... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Music of Its Kind!
Saw them on October 4, 2005 (My Birthday) and I was totally blown away. Upon leaving the venue, I made up my mind to purchase "WAKE" as well as "Into the Labyrinth". Both were on my shopping list and I purchased both and don't regret a minute of it! My favorite songs on this collection are: YULUNGA, HOW FORTUNATE THE MAN WITH NONE, THE CARNIVAL IS OVER, RAKIM, SANVEAN, I CAN SEE NOW, AMERICAN DREAMING, THE HOST OF SERAPHIM, and CANTARA. Disc 2 features the more "known & loved" songs. On the contrary, Disc 1 features songs which I only know 3/4 of. For those who aren't aware of this remarkable duo & their equally remarkable band...you MUST buy "WAKE". It's definitely worth owning because of the quality of sound & the selection of tracks. Every track will move you, mind, body & soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Amazing and Beautiful Tracks
I consider Keane to be musical genuises because of their spectacular first two albums so I decided, "What the heck!" and bought this single with only the knowledge of loving Is It Any Wonder. It turns out this single is perfect. Let It Slide is upbeat and catchy and I love to run and dance to it.It reminds me of the song "Crystal Ball". He Used to Be A Lovely Boy is so..well..lovely! Chaplin really belts out in the chorus and it sounds so beautiful. It's defintely slower than the other two tracks but it's so meaningful. A perfect single for any Keane fan! ... Read more

Editorial Review

In an about-face that could alienate technophiles, this group of dance revisionists celebrate guitars and "real instruments" in the face of processed music. The Williams brothers and their mate Jim Goodwin first had a hit with the disco-charged "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)," but they became disillusioned with the Manchester scene, picked up guitars, and formed the Doves--a band determined to infuse raw emotion into their music. From instrumental opener "Firesuite," which showcases their rumbling, restrained guitar firepower, to the tumbling acoustic shanty "Sea Song" to the balmy Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Favourite Album of last 10 years
This is my favourite album of the last 10 years, brilliant songs. I just wanted to give it 5 stars here....
4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a unique and impressive debut
If I had to explain this album in one word, it would definitely be "unique".How often do you come across an album that starts off with a mellow instrumental? Not often.Hence the originality of this album, which first drew my ears in the direction of Doves.Aside from the uniqueness of the alubm, the band placed the songs very cleverly so it's a good listen the whole way through. It's a very impressive debut, to say the least. The overall sound of the album is very meloncholy, but there are some songs that are more upbeat than the rest.Very melodic and sometimes beautifully symphonic-sounding rock.I highly recommend this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Exotic Sounds
I went on a trip with a buddy of mine to Cincinnati Ohio to visit his brother. While we were there his brothers roomate played some music for us as we began to play poker. The music he played instantly caught my attention as it began to send shivers down my spine. It was like nothing i had ever heard before in my life. The music was beautiful. Not as an understatement it was full of pure exotic sounds. It was something new and refreshing. Every instrument, every sound, flowed together in a way that was so soothing and so smooth.I had never heard of the band the "doves" untill i had gone on that trip with my friend but i am very greatful that i did not only because i had a good time, but i was introduced to one of the greatest bands my ears have had the pleasure of hearing.

Editorial Review

Like many bands of the British pop movement of the early 1990s, the La's created a big--though short-lived--splash, then belly-flopped into obscurity. Most will remember them only from their pillowy single, "There She Goes," but this album is replete with delightfully jangly, remarkably well-crafted songs and deserves to be waived from the stigma of one-hit-wonderdom. Lead singer and songwriter Lee Mavers is largely the culprit responsible for the success and failure of this album; a perfectionist, he ultimately paralyzed the album's momentum with band-member changes, the relentless rerecording of songs, and obsession over details, which caused fatal delays in its completion and release. But his pursuit of perfection was nearly achieved--almost every song had potential as a successful single. Truly a sleeper classic. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ooh la la
Having unbelievably managed to miss this work of pure genius the first time round, this chastened if not chaste reviewer feels compelled to recommend it now. The La's is a perfect album, insofar as there is not a bad tune and actually each one is a gem. Our existence on earth is entirely justified by the opportunity to hear the truly tremendous tunes Son of a gun, I can't sleep, Liberty Ship, There she goes, Doledrom, Knock me down, and I.O.U., etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Amazing Stuff
This is definitely one of the best Brit-pop influencing albums I've heard, right up there with the Stone Roses first album. The catchiness, the songwriting on here is just astounding.Apparently Lee Mavers is some kind of eccntric, much like Kevin Shields (frontman of My Bloody Valentine)and Brian Wilson. While it may be a stretch to compare Mavers to either of those two, this kind of work is simply genius.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate
Ahhh, the La's. Where would we be without them? I, like most people, was only aware of their single There She Goes when I bought this album. And... I love it. I love all of it. I couldn't imagine skipping any one of these songs. They are each beautifully crafted, tight, amazing pop gems. Highlights : Doledrum, Freedom Song.. No, they all rock. Steal this album :P ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fun, light but lyrically interesting and intelligent
This album got heavy airplay when I was a college radio dj back in the day & once again a few years ago when I got a car with a cassette player.Just picked up the "Now that's what i call quite good" compilation at a used CD store and can't wait to play it...
2-0 out of 5 stars Chicken soup for the Marxist soul
A friend of mine really likes this album, but I don't get it.Other British bands have put out much better music of this style (e.g., Duran Duran, the Police).I suspect the answer to my confusion is the explicitly communistic lyrics.Every time someone praises the album, it always seems that they praising the lyrics most strongly. I suspect that the lyrics are thus the aspect of the music that the Housemartin's fans key in on. They are certainly the only distinguishing feature of this band. I don't find the lyrics particularly witty or compelling however, and, when mixed with the derivative music, the whole experience of the album is unsatisfying. The album is thus a lot like contemporary Christian music; the music isn't really all that good, but people like it because they find it inspirational. (There really is a reason why this album never had extensive commercial success.)If you are a Marxist, this album is for you. Otherwise, you will do better with other '80s bands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff
This is one of my favortite recordings. It always cheers me up to hear it.If you like this as much as I do, you'll also likely enjoy the quirky sound of The Balancing Act, Three Squares and a Roof, another great, albeit obscure, album. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing interpretation
Picked this CD out of the rack after not listening to it for years.
4-0 out of 5 stars Jane's Addiction makes it all worth while...
All the songs are well done.Midnight Oil does a unique and impressive version of "Wharf Rat," but it is Jane's Addiction's cover of "Ripple" that stands alone as the one song on the album that actually surpasses the original Dead song as well as surpassing all the other songs on the album in quality."Ripple" rocks. If anything, all Jane's Addiction fans (and maybe Midnight Oil fans) should own this album.Thank you, boys!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic...
I guess everyone has diff. likes & dislikes, but I appreciate this album b/c it introduced me to Lyle Lovett through his tremendous cover of "Friend of the Devil", and the Cowboy Junkies, which at first I couldn't stand, then couldn't get out of my head, now love.Without waxing too poetic, I think of all the covers, the CJ's offered a poignant version of the Dead classic.Anyway, this CD offers something for everyone- I highly recommend it for a lifetime of listening. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Is Music!
Rumored to have been written, recorded, and produced under the influence of ecstacy, this album is by far one of the most haunting listens of the mid-90s, and one of the best. Richard Ashcroft and his cronies with this album crafted a challenging and incredibly rewarding listen, that will have you coming back to it again and again. As with any band that chooses to craft music characterized as subtle, as opposed to those that lay it all out there, this album demands repeated listens before you can see it for what it really is.
5-0 out of 5 stars in my top 10 - everytime
this album just has everthing. massive guitar riffs, incredible rhythm section, richard's vocals at his very best and layered to the max in the right places. songs about living and dying on your own and being a miserable selfish human. but actually there are moments of great beauty and honesty.it makes you feel happy or sad depending on your mood. this album was pretty much overlooked by the mainstream at the time and yet it wipes the floor with ubranhymns.shows what the media and the general public really know doesn't it?
5-0 out of 5 stars A album for music lovers
What can be said for the verves best lp,..I was watching a bad movie on cable one night, and i heard a song in this movie, at some LA party type setting, it was "Slide away". Probable the most known song from their first LP. That song cought my attention, looked in the credits got the name and sought them out. Bought "A storm in heaven". Liked the cd alot, loved slide away, but I was unsure of there longevity. Kinda forgot about them untell I found out there where coming to town to play. Bought a ticket (even if your not a big fan of a group from over seas, never know if you will ever get another chance to see them live again) It was the "Norther soul" tour. I had bought a norther soul cd already and loved it! One raido staion was playing "History" off this album. It was a sami big hit for the band. The album instantly became one of my faviorte cd's (out of 300). Finally a band that will withstand the test of time! So i thought....every song on the album has a feel all its own.History- synphony background loop with great lyics very smooth.

I've purchased this album three times, lost it three times, and am about to purchase it again. It's that good. I've got 40 GB of music on my ipod and there's a gaping hole without Broken Head, The Nude, etc. Incredible. If you've come this far to read a review, you owe it to yourself and friends to pick this up.

I was a music director at a college radio station when this came out, and along with a ton of other albums this one commanded my attention.

Editorial Review

This is a definitive best-of from the scathingly satiric, invariably tuneful band that arose from the ashes of The Housemartins. Sadly, Paul Heaton and friends have always been too twee and clever for the colonies, though classics like "My Book" and "Old Red Eyes Is Back" deserved better. A lovely, sing-along new track, "One Last Love Song," sounds like a farewell to arms, while the limited-edition disc of B sides proves that only XTC can match them in terms of high-caliber throwaways. 5-0 out of 5 stars Criminally Underappreciated
I love The Beautiful South and this album includes almost all of their best songs. If you're new to this band, this is the collection to start out with, you'll probably also want to add Solid Bronze.Eight of the songs in these albums overlap, but listeners who are turned off by the tweeness of Song for Whoever, My Book, or I need a Little Time, will probably appreciate the somewhat softer irreverence of Rotterdam, Perfect 10 and Dont Marry Him Have Me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Music Magic
a suberb band with a message and music that won't make you run screaming from the room, more please

5-0 out of 5 stars the band that should've been huge (in the u.s.)
we americans are often about as bright as alaska in january, and the fact that the beautiful south is criminally ignored here in the united states only further cements that feeling. and that's maybe the reason the beautiful south never caught on in the u.s.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent EP
For those starved and still pining for a follow up to Loveless, the EP/Single Tremolo may be as close to it as we'll ever get.The four songs included here are, for lack of a better word, excellent."To Here Knows When" is the same version found on Loveless, only with a different ending, a better ending in fact - feathery and ephemeral.B-sides "Swallow" and "Honey Power" are worth adding this EP to your collection alone. The latter is 4:33 of My Bloody Valentine-goodness."Moon Power" is an oddity, a melange of interesting noise. If anything Tremolo is a bitter sweet reminder of just how breathtakingly gifted My Bloody Valentine was.Buy it.Download it.Just hear it.Allow yourself to fall under MBV's beautiful thrall once again.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm a penny-pincher (so sue me).
TREMOLO is a little better then the EP GLIDER, but it still feels a little expensive at seven or eight dollars. This EP clocks in at slightly under twenty minutes, and one of the songs on this disc is an almost exact version of a track from LOVELESS (it has an extended ending, which is pretty sweet, but besides that, the tracks are identical). If you own LOVELESS, there is no real reason to buy this EP (unless you're a hardcore Valentine fan such as myself). You'll only be getting about 15 minutes of new songs, and although they ("Swallow" and "Honey Power" are among the better tracks) are better then any of the songs off of the EP GLIDER, they're still below anything on LOVELESS or ISN'T ANYTHING.Don't get me wrong, this EP is excellent, it's just not worth the price.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loveless: The Lost Songs
If you've just gotten in to My Bloody Valentine with "Isn't Anything" and their classic "Loveless", the Tremolo EP is absolutely one of the best places to look afterwards for new songs. Coming off like a series of lost songs that didn't make it onto "Loveless", Tremolo is slightly more accessible (albeit just as beautiful) than their albums, and contains the superior version of the song "To Here Knows When" (the outro to this version fits the song FAR better than the distorted heavy metal one on "Loveless")

5-0 out of 5 stars This band is amazingly chilled....
The lightning seeds are a great band.Their songs can best be described as airy and light, makes you feel all fluffy, soft and warm inside.I love this band. When I have a hard time choosing something to listen to I just pop in the lightning seeds and it makes my day.I absolutely adore the lead singer's voice as well. They're simple and kind of popish, but they're a joy to listen to.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like They Always Do...
The Lightning Seeds is one of my favourite bands... And this album just proves why. Like You Do is a collection of britpop at it's best. If you are wondering what The Seeds are about, this is the perfect album to start off with. One spin and I garuntee you'll be hooked - and no doubt will this album make you wonder what is wrong with "pop" nowadays. This album is truly timeless. I can still listen to it after 8 years and the songs just don't sound dated at all. It's just a shame that The Seeds are no more. Give your senses a treat and get this album. You won't be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars stop with the remakes
This CD was a good album overall. But why do the music industries keep allowing groups to remake old songs.Let's just get on with our lives and leave the past behind and be more original with our songs. One song had over a 2 minute instrumental intro which got boring really quick. It shouldn't have been over 50 seconds. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very pleasant music ..
I bought this CD for the track "Why does it always rain on me" because of its beautiful sound and amazing lyrics. But I was also surprised by the rest of the CD, being very pleasant with consistantly smooth sounds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Travis, 101.
Before I got this collection, all I knew were the songs from "The Man Who". That drove me to get this, and now I'm very glad I did. Included here are the four great singles from "The Man Who", as well as every great one before or since. So besides killer tunes like "Writing To Reach You" and "Why Does It Always Rain On Me", I now also love most of the rest here. My new favorites would be the opener "Sing", maybe one of their happiest and catchiest singles ever. I also dig "Walking In The Sun", "Tied To The 90's", "Side", and "All I Wanna Do Is Rock". With each listen my fave songs tend to change though. My only complaints are....why limit themselves to just the singles for a collection, and like all comps, why not chronological order? Still, most of the good stuff is here, and anybody with a taste for good alt-rock or brit-pop who gets this, should end up quite "Happy".

3-0 out of 5 stars more than enough Travis
I really can't imagine how anyone is passionate about having all of this band's albums. It's not so much that they're bad, just kind of forgettable. The songs tend to drag along at the same mellow mid-tempo and there aren't too many memorable hooks.Realistically, all I or any other casual listener needs is a CD with "Sing" and "Why Does it Always Rain on Me?" with a a few random highlights. All of that is on this collection... and then some.Eighteen tracks is just too much when all of the songs have the same kind of adult contemporary, ready-for-VH1 feel to them. And there are other songs on here other than the aforementioned two that are pretty good. The problem is that there is just too much unnecessary stuff on here.At least Coldplay had one decent album; I can't imagine listening to a whole Travis album in one sitting. It's OK though; I think a lot of listeners will upload the two or three songs they like to the mp3 player and take this one to the retail shop. ...
