5-0 out of 5 stars Get ready to bare all!
This is an awesome CD!I bought it for the Tom Jones version of "You Can Leave Your Hat On".I love dancing along with (almost) all of these songs!!

4-0 out of 5 stars kinda hard NOT to bump 'n grind to this
Whenever I have this CD playing I have to be careful that my teenagers aren't around because it embarrasses them to death to see me bumping and grinding in the kitchen while cooking their dinner. Yes, it's that kind of CD.I'm not into stripping myself but this album certainly makes me want to move. The songs are mostly all oldies from the 70s and 80s but the sort that you can listen to (and holler with) again and again (excepting The Zodiac, which really does remind you of 1960s England).I take exception to others' reviews of Tom Jones remake of "You Can Leave Your Hat On."I originally bought this soundtrack for that song alone and think it surpasses the original. I've seen the movie three times and play this soundtrack whenever I need a lift or am feeling slightly wild. It's a lot of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars A soundtrack with staying power
I enjoyed the movie a lot the one time I saw it.I have owned and enjoyed The Full Monty soundtrack CD for years now.

Editorial Review

Although this band is largely responsible for defining the circa 1990 rave culture, their music is far removed from the bass-heavy electronica usually associated with dance clubs. Ten songs on this album are characterized by lazy tempos, groovy bass hooks, and artfully simple percussion tracks which interact perfectly to form smooth, danceable beats. The rhythmic foundation is further accented by tasteful guitar licks and restrained keyboard parts. Their lyrical content tends to be a little dark, even seedy for exstacy fueled dance parties. The flat, nearly spoken vocal arrangements mesh with the rest of the musical stew. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Groovy Manchester eccentric funk with soulful backup
This album will always be near and dear to me. It came out during my identity-forming teens and it hooked me immediately. Sean Ryder is not a great singer but he's a great lyricist and with the awesome music and backup vocals, it *works*. I love the play on Donovan - "sun shines brightly from my arsehole, today" and "Bob's Yer Uncle" has to be the sexiest song I've ever heard. It reminds me of Pan in that painting with all the maidens. It's funny that expression has little to do with the song - makes me wonder if it's an inside joke. Just about everyone I've met likes this album. I would give definitely give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrift store corner of the world
I picked up this record secondhand for next to nothing in the basement of The United Methodist Church over there on Verbena Avenue. God's benison go with you Pastor Gainus Sikes, your gaff's a goldmine. There it was in any case in a plastic basin with, of all things, a Kenny Rogers cassette. Just the tape too, no cover. Those Salford scallywags almost leapt right into my hands out of sheer terror. That's half off today, said a perfectly dressed little old lady, we're having a sale. Half off in a thrift shop, I said. Sold, I said. I very nearly galloped back to my hut. I'd heard only good things about, but had never actually listened to, Pills & Thrills and while I was gearing up to be suitably impressed I don't believe I was in any way prepared for the frankly colossal dose of high-grade wang doodle delivered by this trippy little disk. I even managed somehow to listen to it out of order the first time, starting off with Holiday which is I think the second last song but what did I care, I was already on the trolley by the time I'd noticed. Ever since then I can't hear Holiday without experiencing an irresistible urge to drift off to sleep in a shrubbery for a week or two. And would you just look at Mister Intergalactic Laxative himself in there too! I haven't thought about old Cosmic Bananas since I can't exactly remember. You just don't lose with this album. I would complain that it's on the short side if it wasn't such a sure sharkey to play on repeat--I've had this sucker on for literally days at a stretch. But eventually I had to get up and go to work. Happy Mondays everybody.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still twistin' our melons, 15 years on, man
Let me start off by saying that Happy Mondays' "Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches" is one of best dance records of the last 25 years. With that said, it is also one of the most defining of its period. The Madchester genre and is one of the most well documented, so I won't go into much on the subject, but out of all the excess and drug fueled controversy that came out of that era, this was the album that showed the best of the time. Those looking for more serious stuff from "The Stone Roses" or "The Charlatans", you are barking up the wrong tree. The guys of Happy Mondays' only know how to party, and they do it twenty four hours a day.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Difference Between Powerful Music and Arena-Rock Production
What happens when a punk band with a smashing sound meets a producer with connections to Blue Oyster Cult? You got it, Give 'em Enough Rope.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of their greatest works
While there is constant debating among Combat Rock, The Clash's first album, and London Calling over which is the Clash's best album, I cant help but feel that this album has been given some what of a raw deal. Its style is very much true to the punk rock roots, while at the same time its very distinct form their first album. I personally have a hard time deciding which Clash album is my favorite, but this deffinetely belongs in the top three. That is next London Calling and The Clash. This is deffinetely an underrated album.
5-0 out of 5 stars My personal favorite
This has to be my favorite Clash cd. It is a lot different than sandinista 1 and 2 or london calling etc etc. I'd say it is a lot like thier debut album in that sense. Much more of a punk rockin feel to it. something you can go wild to. the only song that is a little bit slower than the rest is cheapskates but it is still an awesome song. great great cd. if you want a true taste of the clash pick up give 'em enough rope!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars cocteaus in their baby stage
The cocteaus have proven to be one of the most innovative bands in the world. With that said, garlands was like the seed planted of what was to come in their career. This album can only be described as, dark, damp, menacing, and droning. Which makes it no less wonderful as their future releases. Garlands definatley stands in a category all alone, because it is so different than what would become their "etheriel" sound. If you are a true fan of the cocteaus, you will give this one a chance. It isnt as accessable as their latest efforts, but no less fascinating.

I have been a passionate listener of Cocteau Twins for longer than seems possible, and until I looked up Amazon in order to replace my copy of Garlands (mine being rode hard and put up wet)I had no idea that this album was unpopular or considered to be a poor representation of the band's work.I am startled by these reviews; certainly Garlands is not, what?Milk & Kisses? But why should it be?Turgid and dissonant, dreamy and atmospheric, it is the perfect and neccesary foil to their later work. ... Directors making strong characteristic decisions about the music in their films are, aside from being few in number, generally people who depend on a particular composer--directors like Steven Spielberg (John Williams), Steven Soderbergh (Cliff Martinez), and John Carpenter (himself). Michael Mann is that rare director for whom musical literacy has less to do with professional partnership than with a hunger for aesthetic exploration. From his days with Read more

I watched the movie and thought it was made special by the soundtrack. Infact that's exactly why I bought this OST, the music doesn't need a "scene" for it to make sense. Editorial Review

The debut release by this superstar-Goth outfit shined (and still does) in all its glorious misery and despair. Just how can it be so beautiful? the listener wonders. For one thing, when the project is conceptualized by 4AD Records brain-man Ivo Watts-Russell and includes artists from groundbreaking U.K. bands such as Cocteau Twins, Magazine, and Dead Can Dance, and when a chunk of the material is from musical heavyweights such as Tim Buckley (the haunting "Song to the Siren"), Alex Chilton of Big Star (the devastating "Holocaust" and the heartbreakingly lovely "Kangaroo"), and Colin Newman of Wire (the rockin' "Not Me"), you're bound to come up with something that will be remembered and revered by old-school Goths everywhere. This is lush, hypnotic, astonishingly beautiful.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jon Stone is an idiot.
quite possibly on of the most influential "wave" albums of all time.jon stone is an idiot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ground Breaking
In 1984 when this record came out, the 4AD label was releasing music that no one had ever heard before.Gothic bands such as Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, and Wolfgang Press were breaking ground in the underground music culture.Coulorbox was just taking English pop to new realms. These bands got together with a few of their friends and made an album together. It was really cool.A bunch of our favorite bands doing an album together, we loved it.It was played at parties and at the clubs. It was not the best things the bands had ever done but it was different. We loved the bands so of course we loved what they did together. It is kinda like if the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and The Who all did a record of songs from the 40s together. If you didn't like all three of those bands then you are not going to like that record, but wouldn't that have been something.something.

In 1977, Elvis burst out of the gate with a series of poison pen letters set to music. It was wordy, angry, and as catchy as a cold. And the man was prolific; he kept writing and recording like a man possessed, bringing forth a stream of great songs that showed not only an encyclopedic knowledge of music, but also a passion for it. From "Alison" to "Everyday I Write the Book" it was almost impossible to fault what he was doing, and even harder to select a few songs as better than the others. This best-of, which cuts off in 1986 with the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Costello has had a long and distinguished career as a singer/songwriter.In fact, he is such a good lyricist that like Bob Dylan, his talent sometimes is overlooked.I believe this CD gives a good survey of his early to middle work. One of my favorites here is 'Good Year For the Roses.'

4-0 out of 5 stars The best single disc collection.
"Elvis Costello" was a name I always heard, but I never really made a point to listen to his music. Then I got this disc, and now I often make the point. These 22 songs are incredible, and I wish I gave them a chance sooner. I was also suprised by how many songs I knew, even if not by title. This includes his hits "Alison", "Watching The Detectives", "Pump It Up", and "Everyday I Write The Book". But what's really great, is that most of the other tracks are better. "Oliver's Army", "Man Out Of Time", "New Amsterdam", and "Brilliant Mistake" are amazing. It's hard to believe this is out of print. I guess people will have to get the 2-disc "Very Best Of Elvis Costello" instead, which I assume may be twice as good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best songwriter of the entire rock era.
"The Very Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions" contains some infuriating omissions--I particularly miss "No Action" and "The Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes," not to mention "Almost Blue"--but this is probably as complete as a one-disc collection of Costello's best can be. Costello has written some of the best tunes of anyone in the entire rock era, and as a lyricist puts the lie to the considered opinions of Alan Jay Lerner, Sammy Cahn, etc., who insisted that all rock songwriters were illiterates. Songs such as "I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea," "Oliver's Army," "Radio Radio," "High Fidelity," "Alison" and "Every Day I Write the Book" are a treasure trove of incisive wit, cynicism and tenderness. Meanwhile, I understand there's also a two-volume "Very Best" that is probably the better buy, but this will more than do if your funds and time are limited. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars yeah it's Big Star influenced but so what?
Big Star means Big Time for me. Their number one record is one of my fave records, all time fave and i think such records deserve admiration, respect and a following crowd behind them. And when the crowd is good like these fellows, nothing to say. Alex Chilton but mostly Chris Bell must have liked this collection of beautiful, haunting rock songs. Teenage Fanclub have never touched this perfection again (unfortunately).

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!
A friend of mine gave me this cd about a year ago, I listened to a few minutes of it and was like "What is this crap?" and I shelved it for a couple months. I then picked it back up and gave it another listen. To my surprise it was really catchy to me. The music (and lyrics) are simple, but thats what I like about them. Theyre simple! This is a great college-rock cd. I plan on checking out more Teenage Fanclub, and I suggest you do the same. Notable tracks are Sidewinder, What You Do To Me, and Is This Music?

5-0 out of 5 stars 1983... Gabriel back with Genesis? - not quite, it's a new band ...
I can remember the guy at our local Record store telling me about this "new band" in England who were really good. Evidently all the Iron Maiden fans were into them, they were called Marillion. So I listened to this album and from the first notes thought, sounds more like Peter Gabriel back with Genesis to me, being a big Genesis fan I thought... I'll take it!

What a first album! Such a harmony exists only if the members of the band share the same ideas, dreams, thoughts, musical feelings.Fish's voice is: gentle, angry, soft, harsh, melancholic, mercurial. His range of emotions is infinite! The bass guitar by itself is a symphony.A lot of off time drums and bass.Very progressive keyboards. That is what i call ART-ROCK! Fish has the ability to transform his feelings into a poetry with unique style.Marillion( with Fish)is not easy to be assimilated. It is not for everybody(and that is the beauty of it).Fish's Marillion is very misjudged and unproperly appreciated(mainly in the US,like many other bands and singers[for example: Van Der Graaf Generator,Atomic Rooster

Editorial Review

Stereophonics' fifth album will inevitably provide more material for the band's critics, if only for the fact its title has clearly been rather lazily inspired from the back of a rental video case. The music within, however, is anything but laid-back: the employment of Argentinean drummer Javier Weyler, who replaces founding member Stuart Cable, sees the band venturing further along the hard-rock path that spawned previous denim-and-leather-clad tracks like "Moviestar". The first three tracks find frontman Kelly Jones is in downbeat mood, his vocals drawled and insouciant, and his lyrics distinctly sour--take the raging "Doorman", where he rails against some faceless bouncer with surprising and rather paranoid ferocity: "You like nothing more than to break my face/ You like to throw me out on the street!". Things sweeten towards the album's middle, providing two of the album's stand-out tracks: the chiming, electronic-tinged "Dakota" is a light, buoyant anthem that deserves to be a hit, while "Rewind" is a reflective moment that pricks memories of mid-period U2. But on the whole, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A rocking joy.
There's some great stuff on this. Some of it's a little poppy, like Dakota, but for all out ball crunching rock, take a listen to Deadhead or Devil - Devil's just superb. Thought the band was heading down a more bluesy road until I heard this album. Terrific stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Been Emotional
On paper it doesn't bode well. Stuart Cable, the arse-bearing gonzoid party fiend who acted as the sole respite from the po-faced demeanour of the Stereophonics, was given the boot at the tail-end of fourth album You Gotta Go There To Come Back's promotional duties. The trio of Cable, drummer Richard Jones and commanding officer Kelly Jones had built up a massive UK following since humble Welsh beginnings in the 1990s, however it was only Cable's effervescent personality that made the group interesting music magazine fodder. While their albums - mighty debut Word Gets Around, Performance And Cocktails, Just Enough Education To Perform and You Gotta Go There To Come Back - sold like proverbial hotcakes in the UK (just like their Australian equivalent Powderfinger), it didn't always mean that their music sounded inspired or progressive (just like their Australian equivalent Powderfinger). Without joker Cable to fluff about unconventionally during recording, Kelly Jones - the pint-sized dictator of the Cwmaman group - has apparently now seized total control of Stereophonics, with the resulting Language. Sex. Volence. Other? being a new beast entirely. From the sneery opening sound of Superman (with its `You don't know what it's like' refrain baiting the media in a similar manner to former single Mr Writer), Jones takes his vocals to a higher plane than earlier works, with his guitar dipping into equal parts funk and fuzz. Such is Kelly's change in song delivery that on Brother - almost certainly a flimsily hidden diss directed at former pal Cable - his singing will surely have even long-time Stereophonics fans raising eyebrows in surprise. There's still the required tally of songs detailing birds, pubs and humdrum lifestyles, but Language. Sex. Violence. Other? finds tracks such as Dakota and Deadhead registering as their finest work since 1997's Local Boy In The Photograph saw them explode onto the international scene. When Kelly quotes Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels' Big Chris in the sleeve note thank yous with the departing line `It's been emotional', odds are you'll believe him.

3-0 out of 5 stars eh....

4-0 out of 5 stars this is worth it
'Speed of Sound' isn't that stupendous a song. 'Clocks' is way better and I don't think another song could top that from Coldplay. 'Speed of Sound' is pretty much based on the concept of 'Clocks' - something fast, with lots of synths, and a repititive drum loop. This time they used more guitars and tried to make it more melodic, which definitely worked for the masses, but it didn't for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars how often people change, no two remain the same, why things don't always turn as you plan
this is strange; Things i don't understand, a b-side to Speed of Sound... i think it should at least have made the album cut...this song blows away a lot of the songs on the album...

5-0 out of 5 stars Here comes The Fear again...
Despite the critical acclaim and feverous fan acceptance, Pulp's 1998 masterpiece "This is Hardcore" failed to build on the momentum that started with their landmark 1995 album "Different Class," and it will be remembered as Pulp's arty career-killer. If there ever was an album that proves that commercial success and quality of output don't always meet, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let me "Spell It Out" for you
There's a natural tendency to take something unfamiliar and compare it to something familiar. That's what's happening here as Amazon reviewers are comparing Embrace to Coldplay.Perhaps it's unfair to Embrace to liken them to Coldplay because as a band, I'd think Embrace wants to stand on their own merits. However, if you're being so closely measured against the hottest rock and roll band in the world today, is that really a bad thing?
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
If you like Coldplay or Keane, you will love this band. I have really enjoyed it and have shared it with many of my friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow -A top 5 CD of 2005
From the opening anthemic Ashes until the climactic epic Out of Nothing, this is a fantastic ride by an underrated and underappreciated band.

Editorial Review

Gomez must think of themselves as a live juggernaut to release a double live album as their fifth release (and first for Dave Matthews’ ATO label). Recorded over the course of a three nights at a sold-out Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco in January 2005, the British six-piece plays a bluesy, psychedelic pop that’s breezily anthemic. And yeah, they are great live. Among the highlights is a spirited and spaced-out cover of one of Nick Drake’s best and least-covered songs, "Black Eyed Dog." Some of the songs are a bit lazy (the bloozy "Fill My Cup," the stoner anthem "Get Myself Arrested") but here’s a band that’s clearly awesome in their element. They might mix up genres, but unlike their Mercury Prize-winning debut, they rarely do so in unexpected ways. That is not a diss, either; this is very smartly done, shake-your-hips-and-make-out-with-the-cute-person-next-to-you party music. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Live album from one of the best bands of the new millenium
Into the new millennium and Gomez together with Muse, Mercury Rev, Elbow, Coldplay and The Flaming Lips (from "Soft Bulletin" (1999) onwards) were the bands that really excited me the most. (Previous to these recent years Kings X and Dream Theater "did it for me" in the 90's, Marillion were "my 80's" band together with Simple Minds, Big Country, Waterboys and U2. My 70's favorites were largely Genesis, Rush and Jethro Tull.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Gomez fans and faithful
This album disappoints. The album is poorly mastered and the songs do not do justice either to Gomez's sound in concert or to that on their albums.Gomez favorites, such as Free to Run or Make No Sound, lack the special licks that made them stand out.No violin, no intricate chord progression; the detail is missing, and the bass overwhelms the composition that you expect from Gomez.Overall, the album sounds flat and lifeless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stellar Live Act
I've attended multiple Gomez shows and this 2 CD set definitely captures their energy.Three January 2005 concerts in San Francisco were condensed into one show-length setlist for this release.Luckily over half the songs come from the first two Gomez albums, classics that the band has failed to match."Here Comes The Breeze" and several others clearly eclipse their respective studio treatments. ... VERY GOOD SPACE GUITAR ROCK.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Soundtrack For Sunsets And Starry Skies
Sheer bliss, a record full of wonder with Nick McCabe's hypnotic, soothing guitars as it's focal point. Richard Ashcroft's vocals accompany rather than lead through this ten track psychedelic voyage.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous in places
'Star Sail' is great: starting off with dreamy chorals and near-whispered opening lines... then in with the cascading power guitars... thundering bass clipping like the audio on a Saturn V rocket launch... the murmered lyrics melting into the guitar feedback until the whole song is about to collapse, then... a magnificent resolve. It's amazing.'Slide Away' and 'The Sun, The Sea' are very strong.

The short-lived British Ska revival of the late 70's early 80's produced onlyone really great band. The Specials were indeed very special. We ALL need a little Specials in our lives. And if you buy only one Specials CD, this should be it. ( Their self titled debut album is great too, and should be your next Specials purchase, as it contians one song - "Little Bitch " -
