Editorial Review

Spelling the end of Happy Mondays laddishness, Suede were a southern Smiths transported back to the era of Ziggy Stardust. Their songs were vignettes of sad suburban dreamers, set to chords that came straight from the David Bowie songbook. Singer Brett Anderson exhumed Bowie's feyest Anthony Newley voice, while guitarist Bernard Butler took a major leaf out of the Johnny Marr simultaneous-lead-and-rhythm book, underpinning Anderson's wan languor with a gritty verve. "The Drowners" was a glam classic, and "Metal Mickey" as poutingly punky as any of the great T. Rex singles. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Won't someone give me a gun?!
No,the gun is not for my brother.I'll need it personally, to shoot all the impeccably bred critics and alleged melomans, all the swine who never bothered to really listen to Suede.Yes,Bowie and the Smiths were the idols that Brett and Bernard worshipped, their perverse glamour had obviously poisoned those working class kids at a tender age and provided the impulse to revive guitar rock. However,I dont think that even Brett and Bernard have realised what they have actually done, because they remain blinded by the halos of their own teenage heroes.Apart from the homage and the obvious similarities, the early Suede stuff is way better than anything David and Moz have ever released. It'd be a hypocritical sacrilege to compare a shallow and trendy rock'n'roll record like Ziggy Stardust with the creativity and the energy of the Suede debut, not to mention the whiny and quite theatrical world of Morrissey's discreet homosexuality.Come on!The power, sincerity, the sensuality, the androgynous angst and the vulnerability of Anderson are much deeper and far more convincing, they haunt the triviality of daily life and create a new enchanting dimension out of it,a dimension in which the drugs, the sex,and even a thing like paracetamol have an almost esoteric meaning.
3-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable beginning, forgettable finish
By the time you hit song five "Pantomime Horse" you will be starting to wonder how this band did not go on to be a major international act. With the impossible styling of the lead singer and the wailing lead breaks of the guitar broken by sudden fragile piano runs it is not possible to listen unemotionally to this album.
5-0 out of 5 stars it moved my life in a new direction
two or three months after i got home from a two-year stint a friend of mine played me 'the drowners.'i remember sitting in the car absolutely dumbfounded and befuddled by what i was hearing. the only other time i'd had such an experience was the first time i heard 'the queen is dead.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Good start, but lacking
I was actually able to get my hands on the Jam's greatest hits collection Gold. It's a two-disc set with disc one being the UK version of Sound of the Jam.The only difference with the US and UK versions is that the UK has six more songs. So basically, I own Sound of the Jam, and it is hard to say I am not pleased with.It serves as perhaps the perfect start and introduction to this very under appreciated band. It's in a nice chronological order, so it's easy to see how far the band progressed in their short career. In America the Jam is a very underrated band and this CD shows how underrated they truly are.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great primer for a classic British band
Across their six albums, The Jam touched on virtually every style in existance, and this CD is a great chance to see that. Their roots were in the punk / new wave scene, but frontman Paul Weller also had a lvoe of soul, funk and jazz, as well as an itneresting socio-political approach that had a different kind of bile to the Sex Pistols - it was perhaps more positive and inspirational, even in their early days.5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to an overlooked band!
It's already been said a million times, but I guess it bears repeating: the Jam were a smart band with an edge who were idolized in their native Britain but almost completely ignored by American listeners. It's sad, but very true.(In the States, Jam leadman Paul Weller was most famous for being the only featured singer who nobody could recognize in that Band Aid video of "Feed the World (Do they know it's Christmastime?")"Oh look there's Bono, George Michael, Boy George, and Simon Le Bon.But who's that guy?")Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No More Keeping My Feet on the Ground with Coldplay
I can never say enough good things about Coldplay. They are fantastic and getting better and stronger even more now. The single cd of "Yellow" contain one of their biggest hits, as well as two other tracks, "Help Is Round The Corner" and "No More Keeping My Feet On The Ground" which are b-sides of the single, are just testament to their greatness today! Don't hesitate to get this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Choice
This Cd includes songs from Coldplay's first demo cd and is a great investment for any real fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only to complete your collection
There's not much spectacular about "No More Keeping My Feet."I like all of Coldplay's stuff, so this is probably the only song I don't enjoy."Help Around the Corner" is a nice acoustic piece which brings the single's rating up to 3 stars. ... Read more

Ride was an essential element of the wall-of-sound, trippy, melodic shoe-gazing movement of the early '90s. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic from end to end...
Few times can you think of albums recorded as recently as fifteen years ago as classics, but Ride's "Nowhere", with its emblematic cover and its load of anthemic tracks, constitutes just that: a classic album, from end to end. Influenced by the likes of Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, the album kicks in with the distortion-heavy "Seagull", leading into songs as huge as "Dreams Burn Down" and as deep as "Paralysed". The end result is an overload of shoegazing material that turned out to even influence Radiohead's very own Thom Yorke, who was a fan of the fan before he scored his later successes.

4-0 out of 5 stars ;alsdkfheohgvask
This is a pretty decent album for a bunch of young pretentious snots. I didnt care for it too much when it first came out, but on retrospect, and after hearing it again, I think it stands the test of time and sounds better in my ears than when I first played it. Of course, the vocals are still a little "lite" for me, but the playing is exceptionally decent. A heir to My BloodyValentine? I would dispute that. If you're looking for shoe-gazey music of quality, you might want to check out Bowery Electric "Beat", later Slowdive "Slouvaki", early Verve "A Storm in Heaven", or even Swervedriver.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ride's best, but what is that saying?
Ride and shoegazer fans love this album, but for me the only two songs worth anything are the Cocteau Twins influenced "dreams burn down" and the glorious "Vapor Trail," for which I deserve a commission from the band since every time I play it for anyone they always go buy the album themselves. A super excellent song, now a timeless shoegazer classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatgreatgreat!
The first REAL Kate Bush album (actually the third, the first two were great also)the one where she finally came closer to her vision of what her music should sound like and it's brilliant, original, experimental and fun! Faves are Babooshka, All We Ever Look For, Wedding List, Violin, Infant kiss, Night Scented Stock, Army Dreamers and Breathing! Well, 98% of the album, actually. But it's all wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Signs Of Change...
Kate Bush's music up to this release had been a traditional 'girl and a piano' sound, with simple songs and no real experimentation. However, in this album she started to dabble further into the unknown territory that she would eventually fully explore in "The Dreaming" and in parts of "Hounds Of Love", this said she still kept the heirlooms of "The Kick Inside" and "Lionheart" intact. "Never For Ever" is perhaps one of the more interesting albums in Kate's catalogue because it is the first point in which she changed her style and voice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
As you know, this is Kate's third album, and it was followed by the masterpieces "The Dreaming", and "Hounds of Love". To me, "Never Forever" sounds like a cross between her debut and the Dreaming, but still is a very rewarding and challenging experience.

Kate Bush attracts too many eccentics and over passionate fans. She is a true talent but some of material is too self indulgent. She is a "hit or miss" artist.

I am probably a bit unusual for a Kate Bush fan in that I like her earlier work better than her later work. And of Lionheart and Never For Ever and The Kick Inside (which are all creme de la creme Kate), this is my favorite album.I was introduced to Kate by my mother while I was still fairly young and have been an admirer of/listener to her music since.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!
This is an amazing Cd. The first time I listened to it, I was blown away. So I listened to it again, and again, and again. I found myself singing "killer cars" everytime I'd start driving. Banana Co. and Killer Cars are the best tracks but the whole thing is amazing. BUY THIS ALBUM!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Help
This is an excellent album for all Radiohead fans, just read the reviews. I'm just writing this to offer all of you a bit of help. I live in England, and have noticed that the prices on www.amazon.co.uk are much better than you poor people stateside are offered by www.amazon.com. It takes on average a week and a bit to deliver, which was perfectly acceptable for me anyway, but even with the pound being especially strong at the moment, you will make a big saving. This difference is even bigger on any imported albums, as of course in the band's native England we do not have to import them. Maybe while you americans are on amazon.co.uk you could write a review or two as well, as your reviews seem to be on the whole much more intelligent and eloquent than my own compatriots. Good luck :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Tip
Do yourself a favour and visit www.amazon.co.jp if you want this album for cheaper. It costs about 2,745.00 japanese yen, the equivalent to about 26$ US dollars. It'll take longer to ship to the states, but you will be getting it for less money.Just a tip.:)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hardly can skip a track, do albums do that?? THANKS DOVES!!!
Loved LOST SOULS, one of my all-time favs of any group to be honest.Honest, full of intrigue and originality that hooked me as a Coldplay fan.I now consider myself a graduate of Coldplay to the Doves.Coldplay's music is very listenable, great for pop/rock today, but lacks the musicianship and experimental work the Doves are able to explore and provide for their fans.Coldplay is too predictable, bottom line.I do like their music however.Anyways, getting back from that tangent, Some Cities is so different from their previous efforts.Your not going to get another Lost Souls, which was an absolutely epic record. The only problem with that album was there were too many tracks.Every time I listen to the album I skip at least four tracks that bore me.However, there best work is on the album so how can you call it anything but great?Every album seems to have its lows.Last broadcast was similiar w/out such great tracks as Lost Souls.Getting to "Some Cities" I found this album to be their best overall effort.I might skip a few tracks when not in the mood, but going through the album I find such diversity with tracks like "almost forgot myself" "snowden" to my favorites "walk in fire" to the pounding drums and elevating beauty to an amazing guitar riff that leaves you breathless and with chills and goosebumps on the song "one of these days", Can't name a bad song on this album.I forget titles of the songs and have this song in my CD changer so much, I only know track numbers.Basically, if you need something to help wake you up from the boredom of Coldplay and their predictable songs and lyrics, pick this album up.SUCH A GREAT ALBUM, see what you think and if you don't have it yet, go straight to "one of these days" and turn that sucker up!!

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
This album is like a shiney used car that is prone to breaking down: it seems nice on the surface but you just can't get much mileage out ot it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Doves Album
Doves somehow retain their great sound yet always expand further into their musical expression.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars: My first taste of The Verve
I first heard about the brittish emo rock group 'The Verve' after listening to their hit song that had made the radio stations over and over again for a long period of time here in Australia. Their song 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' is one of the best songs ever made and its melody is surreal and enchanting. I purchased this album for that reason, it had this song on it and I really wanted it. "This Is Music" is a album consisting of 14 songs that became The Verve's singles betwee 1992-95.

5-0 out of 5 stars BETTER TO OWN ALL THREE COMPLETE ALBUMS
The Verve are no one-hit wonder, this is the only 90s Brit band that has three consistent albums. Better than all my other favourites, Suede, Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Dodgy and Lightning Seeds. What's missing here are great tracks like Rolling People, Weeping Willow from Urban Hymns and old gems from A Northern Soul and A Storm in Heaven. Go ahead, buy all three Verve albums, money well-spent. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars what's all the negative reviews about? eh?
the stereophonics have always made good acoustic rock sounding sounds on previous albums they were filtered in here and there espically on J.E.E.P but this is there next album and i must say i don't agree with most of what the other reviewers on amazon are saying "so what is they've mellowed out" if it's good who cares? this is a fantastic stripped album with great melodies and hooks [jones's playing and singing are superb]
4-0 out of 5 stars I bought this album because I liked "Maybe Tommorow"
and that stands as my favorite track on the album.
5-0 out of 5 stars There's a reason "Maybe Tomorrow" has been on every sound track in the last year, it's that good!
This album is seriously amazing, especially the single "Maybe Tomorrow" which has to be one of the best driving-pensive-songs in recent history, yesterday it inspired me to just get in my car and drive, which I did, to Wisconsin.I just think they have something special, it's the perfect soundtrack song, and that's why it's on like 100 soundtracks!Great work from a great, prolific band. ... Reviews (36)

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece in its own right
I don't usually take issue with Amazon's editorial reviews, but Roni Sarig makes two big blunders. First, he calls Isn't Anything "worthy of Creation [Records]'s 'shoe-gazing' heritage." Before this album, there was no such "heritage." This album created such a buzz in the UK, Creation used its producers and sound engineers to make pop bands like Lush and Ride sound as much like this record as possible ... this was the album that set off the shoegazer movement. Despite those efforts, though, no one ever managed to create an album that sounded just like this, not even MBV's follow-up. Second, Sarig and many other reviewers seem to think Isn't Anything is merely a step towards greatness. This album does not have the insane, orchestral density of Loveless, but for that reason it's able to deliver a much wider variety of pleasures. The bass-driven stop-start of "Soft as Snow," the relentless guitar attack of "Feed Me With Your Kiss," the pairing of quavering tremelo and creepy, childlike vocals of "No More Sorry" ... each of these tracks is a perfect, unique jewel. You can hear many of the tools Kevin Shields and his band would use to construct Loveless, but in a more spare arrangement that allows you to hear each element much more clearly. Many tracks make dramatic use of silence, something MBV never did later in their career. You can also hear the band flatout rock. You can't call "Feed Me," "You Never Should" or "Sueisfine" "dream pop" ... they're pure adrenaline. This is, to be sure, a more conventional rock album than Loveless, but it still sounds like nothing else. If it came out today, we'd be falling all over ourselves to praise it.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything isn't perfect
My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything isn't perfect. Although it is slightly more influential (in my opinion) then their moment of excellence, Loveless, it isn't as good. In some ways, it is much easier to listen to Isn't Anything if you forget about Loveless entirely. Then, you can appreciate the album for all it is: a near-perfect example of seamless distortion and faded yet sensual voices provided by Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher (unfortunately, unlike Loveless, Shields takes the spotlight on this album, and Butcher sings on only a few of the tracks).
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, that was dreamy.
I am one of the few who believe that "Isn't Anything" is leagues better than "Loveless". This is one of my favorite albums; therefore, it's one of the few albums I've actually purchased. "Isn't Anything" isn't really one of the most uplifting albums of all time, but it is undoubtedly original and I might even add, influencial.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Modfather is still going strong
I'd buy a CD of Paul Weller belching the phonebook, so admittedly this may not even come close to an objective review. Nevertheless, this album is amazingly good for someone who has been in popular music for 30 years with numerous peaks and valleys in his career. This recording from his 2005 tour provides a seamless mix of old and new solo material, along with selected favorites from the Jam and the Style Council. For fans who have been with Weller during all three phases of his career, having an album that unifies all those phases so well is a welcome treat. It doesn't hurt that the sound quality and the playing by Weller's band are of excellent quality. I had the pleasure of seeing this tour when it stopped in Los Angeles, and this album comes about as close to reliving that evening as possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Live Album
Yes it is "another live album" but Weller is beginning to acknowledge his past and returns here to a couple of Jam classics. The music is well performed, passionate in a few spots.Well worth the investment if you're a fan, if you are only curious get Modern Classics first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catch this flame - NOW!
Paul Weller is one of those rare artists who combines classic soul, rock, R&B and British pop in one highly satisfying package. His songs are thoughtful and introspective, smart and wise, powerful and rocking. His records have remained consistent with these attributes over the years and "Catch-Flame!" is no exception. With his first proper live recording, Paul's career comes full circle with this commanding two-cd set. There's everything for the curious new listener as is for the old fan - energetic electric arrangements as well as acoustic-band renditions of old favorites, all backed by his very potent and talented band.Sonically, the recording is clean but not too polished, much like his studio outtings - a bit raw, capturing the full essence of the night which adds to the intensity and genuinity of Paul's music. Of course, old fans will be basking in the glory of these new takes on old classics. Also, I highly recommend this release to any fan of classic rock, soul & pop and/or to anyone who is inquisitive about this highly underrated and multi-talented artist. "Catch-Flame!" will be a strong addition to any collection. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's OK!
Back at the end of 1991 when I first got this album, I was only 13 and just starting to buy music. Being musically inexperienced at such a tender age, I'd never heard anything like it before and was absolutley blown away. This is going to sound like sacrilege, but I liked it even better than My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless"! (Actually I still do).
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
The album that divides the 80s from the 90s, that signes the death of shoegazing and the birth of dreampop.. a must-have

3-0 out of 5 stars Serene overall . . . what did I just listen to?
Not too long after I went ga-ga for My Bloody Valentine's LOVELESS, I picked this up and was somewhat underwhelmed. Basically it's agreeable atmospheric background music, but nothing that will stick in your head (except for, maybe, the first track). There's certainly nothing mind-blowing here. If you're into ambient music, this album might turn you on. Others, purchase with. . . eyes wide open.

This album will prove easily why Electronic are the best New Order side project. Monaco follows in a close second spot - but then again, that's for another review.
4-0 out of 5 stars its still new order
Hidden gem I love it. If you like new order buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
This is an amazing album. It's the guitair from the Smiths (Marr) and the voice/synth of NEW order (Summer) and Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys) as a guest vocalist. Do I have to say anything else? ... Read more

Along with the more overtly quirky Pavement, James sought to bring the eccentric folk-rock of the Incredible String Band into the alt-rock era, and did an especially fine job of it on this 1993 release. Still reeling from the U.K. chart success of their "Sit Down" single and Read more

and I don't regret it. Not one bit. This has some beautiful acoustic psychodelic ballads such as "1 of the 3" and "out to get you," along with some catchy more upbeat tunes such as "Sometimes" and of course, the title track, probably they're most known song in at least the states. I remember hearing that song as a high school student and never knowing who it was by. I think I was wondering if it was an early Verve song or something. I guess that just goes to show how ahead of their time James was! 2Bad I didn't know better. Oh well, thankfully, a local radio station played it again a couple of years ago and actually announced it. I'm just curious to know what some of their other stuff sounds like. I'll have to check that out too. If u like acoustic music of any kind, definately pick this up.

I received the CD in one week, and considering how the postal service works, I thought that was pretty good.I'm pleased

5-0 out of 5 stars The best album ever - it's a toss up
It's a choice between this and Dark Side Of The Moon...This album has better individual songs but probably DSOTM beats it on being more than the sum of the parts. A hard choice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Starsailor was the other dream brother
Well, on the contrary, maybe this band was inspired by Jeff Buckley's father, Tim Buckley, rather than Jeff himself. Then again, I have neither heard or read any interviews of the bands influences nor do I hear the influence itself come from their music. I say this because Tim Buckley was "star sailor". Star Sailor was an album by Tim Buckley, one of his earliest. This album is mediocre at best. It has a certain aura that accompanies Jeff Buckley's Grace album. I would have to agree with an earlier comment, Jeff was amazing. I wont base the bands rating on a level with Jeff or Tim but am giving it their own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good.
I can't say more than the other people who have already written here praising this CD.What got me interested in this band in the first place is the song Way to Fall. This was the song used in the ending credits of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and when I first heard it, I really liked the sound and pacing of it.Definitely recommend this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sounds intriguing but needs work...
I don't see the comparison to Jeff Buckley AT ALL! That was a singer who had more talent in his little pinky than this band has on the entire album. All the songs are much too similar, the guy's voice gets boring to listen to after a while and, if you remember London Suede, has a very similar sound to them (though I will say that London Suede was MUCH better). No one has come close to the pipes of J. Buckley (or even Tim B., for that matter) in years and this doesn't count any where near that, either. ... Read more

First of all, I have to say that "Crystal Ball" is awesome, and, aside from "Somewhere Only We Know", is my favorite Keane song. What makes this song so special is that it has been part of a journey that I have been on in trying to reach this person I saw on the news named Lara Roxx about a year and a half ago.It was a real sad story about how Lara grew up in a troubled family environment and wound up on the streets and eventually wandered into porn. After only 3 months in the porn business, she came down with HIV, as if this poor girl did not have enough problems already! To make matters worse, she was only 19 when she contracted the deadly virus--just starting out in life. She is still above ground and is currently residing in Montreal, trying to start a foundation to help raise money for AIDS Awareness.Well, recently, both my friend and I had the idea to try and contact Keane and send them my version of "Crystal Ball" entitled "Montreal" which deals with Lara's plight and have Keane sing "Montreal" and release it as a single and have the proceeds donated to Lara Roxx's Foundation to help her get it financed.I think Keane would really go for it as they seem to be involved in reaching out to the underdogs and those less fortunate in society.I am sure that Lara would really appreciate it as well. This is one of my ultimate dreams that I pray would come true someday soon.
