Editorial Review

In a few short years, the Clash transformed themselves from one of English punk's hardest-edged bands to an adventurous outfit with their hands in reggae, dub, dance, and funk. Nowhere is that range more evident than this collection of singles spanning their entire career, from the three-chord fury of "White Riot" through the swooning pop of "Train in Vain" to the dance groove of "Rock the Casbah." While no substitute for the likes of the self-titled debut, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's The Clash... Enough Said.
The Clash are my favorite band of all time, so of course I gave this cd 5 stars. If you haven't listened to The Clash's music before, you are really missing out! This is a good collection of their singles, and is a decent beginning to any punk collection. That being said, it's only a beginning. I agree with the reviewer below me who said that there are better cds compilations of The Clash's music. I'd reccomend "The Story of The Clash," which has 28 of their songs, including one of their best singles "Career Opportunites." But, any cd of The Clash is good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete!
This used to be an OK disc...until they came out with The Essential Clash. This one has 18 tracks, that one has 40 tracks. This one costs 50 cents per song, that one costs 40 cents/song.This one is a cursory, szichophrenic-sounding overview, that one includes nearly all their greatest songs and gives the listener a full picture of their amazing evolution.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Singles, The Best
If you haven't heard a Clash album yet and you want to hear what all the fuss is about then this album is the one for you. It gives you all the greatest hits that they had over their time together as a band. From their version of "I Fought the Law" to "London Calling" to "Mag. 7". If you are to get just one album of The Clash make it this one, you won't be disappointed by what you hear. ... Read more

If there's one thing film producers and record executives like more than Success, it's Success: Part 2. Thus when Ridley Scott's high-tech sword 'n' sandal epic scored both Golden Globe wins and Academy Award nods for Best Film and Best Score, it was a sure bet that another volume of Hans Zimmer's and Lisa Gerrard's music for the film couldn't be far behind. Though not exactly leftovers, the tracks here sometimes point to the fact that there wasn't enough fresh material to fill this volume out, hence we get some remixed cues, a handful of familiar music with dramatic dialog excerpts edited and superimposed (or misplaced, with decidedly mixed results), and even a beat-heavy, dance-club mix of "Now We Are Free." With a little over half an hour of entirely fresh material and some souvenir dialog snippets over the rest, there's enough here to please Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST PRESENT DAY COMPOSER!!!
I HAVE TO SAY HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST OF HIS ERA. I HAVE PURCHASED ALMOST ALL OF HIS MAJOR SCORES FROM RAIN MAN, CRIMSON TIDE, GLADIATOR, AND EVEN THE LATEST BATMAN AND I KNOW I HAVE PLENTY OF MORE THAT COULD BE LISTED. I FIRST WAS WEIRY ABOUT BUYING THE SECOND SCORE TO GLADIATOR THINKING IT WOULD BE JUST LIKE THE FIRST ONE. IT IS AWESOME AND JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER, IF YOU ARE A TRUE ZIMMER FAN YOU HAVE TO ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION. I HOPE HE KEEPS MAKING MUSIC FOR YEARS TO COME.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must be a clash, there's no alternative!
Why the heck this terrific album isn't mentioned as a Clash masterwork in the same breath as LONDON CALLING is a mystery to me. Coming out when it did at the tail-end of 1980, SANDINISTA! was so unlike anything else on the landscape of Punk and New Wave that I, for one, got drawn in right away. It's an album that dared to break the "Year Zero" mentality that ultimately made Punk and New Wave a cul-de-sac, and grab onto rockabilly, gospel, sound collages ala "Revolution #9," rap and lots and lots and lots of dub, all the while sounding like nobody else but The Clash. And you want classic toons? Try "The Magnificent Seven," "The Call Up," "Police On My Back" (which was penned by Eddy Grant), "Charlie Don't Surf" (probably the best track here) and a load of others.
3-0 out of 5 stars maybe I missed something?
I must have missed something because this CD really wasn't the greatest the clash has to offer. Sandinista Disc 1 just wasn't doing it for me. maybe they were trying really hard to explore different styles but it was kind of out there. nothing was really a good song and i feel kind of bad that this is taking up a spot in my CD wallet. The second song Hitsville UK sounded like it should have been playing on "Peewee Herman's Playhouse" or "Barney". it was like a disney sing a long with some random woman in it. what the hell? However, Sandinista Disc 2 i was much more appreciative of. This disc showed they hadn't totally gone off the deep end. so this is what i think. i'm more into thier self-titled album and give 'em enough rope. even london calling was great. this just didn't settle well at all. don't start here if you are a new fan. go for give em' enough rope or self-titled.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most important album since darkside of the moon
when i first listened to this album i have to admit that like most, i didn't completely get it. I had just recently heard the first three clash albums (my first real forray into classic punk) and immediately fell in love with them. this album however didn't grab me as quickly. well anyway after a few years of obsession with their early work i decided to give it one more try. this time i came prepared with 3-4 years of experience listening to the best in punk, blues, jazz, reggea, rockabilly and classic rock -- and more importantly a greater awareness of the socio-political world.sandinista is one of the deepest and most engrossing concept albums ive ever had the pleasure of encountering, it paints a painfully accurate portrait of the continuing struggle between the upper and lower classes and the blood and tears it creates -mainly for the latter, and of course throughout the album Mr. Strummer reminds us of the healing power that music and music alone has to bring us all together.

5-0 out of 5 stars All around great stuff
Considering most of the crap music that the 90's produced, this was a brilliant masterpiece. Not a bad song among the bunch, I can never get tired of listening to Common People and Something Changed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply one of the finest albums you'll ever encounter
It is almost impossible for any album on Amazon to receive nearly a hundred reviews and still get an overall 5 star rating, yet DIFFERENT CLASS has managed to do just that.Although Pulp has several really good albums, this is their best in my opinion. It isn't just that the songs are musically compelling; lyrically the songs are frequently and unexpectedly complex. When this album was first released in England it was one of the rare times when an album achieved simultaneously intense critical and popular acclamation.Critics declared it a masterpiece, and fans bought it in astonishing numbers. The album also is deceptively political, in that it features class difference in a large number of songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars the best $10.34 i will spend this year
i had recently read about Pulp and this album in particular from a retrospective "Britpop" magazine from NME(New Music Express)i had picked up a few months ago at Barnes & Noble. Me being a huge fan of the era's biggest bands(Oasis, Blur, The Verve etc.), the 1995 section featured a glowing review for this album which was given a perfect ten. I simply accepted it as a great album that i promised myself, i would get around to eventually.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get your Dose of Robbie
Great selection of robbie songs. My wife loves this guy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The starting place for one of the greatest pop stars
Britain & Europe seems to house many powerhouse acts that never seem to break America. Like Kylie Minogue, Texas, or even The Corrs to name a few are all successful pop acts everywhere but in America.Robbie is one of the best, originally starting off in the mid-1990's British boyband Take That, Robbie (along with writing/producer in crime Guy Chambers) propelled himself into the pop music conscious with witty hooks & salacious good looks.A mix of humorous self-deprecation & bouts of melancholic romantic notions, Robbie has sat upon the throne as one of the greatest male vocalists of Britain.
1-0 out of 5 stars Another instalment from the avatar of the banal
If you are an American citizen you should count yourself extremely lucky. As an American you are unlikely to be bombarded with the dire, aural insults (very loosely described by some generous spirited individuals as "songs") that spew forth almost incessantly from this individual.

Editorial Review

The gentle hand of Emmylou Harris guides this tribute to ill-fated country-rock avatar Gram Parsons, which goes a long way toward explaining why this star-studded salute avoids the pitfalls that befall many such projects. Harris got her start harmonizing with the patron saint of alt country, contributing mightily to Parsons's two early 1970s solo albums and reviving selections from his small, but indispensable, oeuvre throughout her career. She has a vested interest in finding a true connection between her former benefactor and this cast of Parsons partisans. Here she bands together a flock of followers who range from obvious offspring (Wilco, Gillian Welch, Whiskeytown) to not-so-evident disciples (Beck, the Pretenders, Sheryl Crow). Parsons's partner in the Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman, teams with Steve Earle on "High Fashion Queen," and David Crosby (like Parsons and Hillman, an ex-Byrd) joins Lucinda Williams on "Return of the Grievous Angel." Harris harmonizes with Beck on "Sin City" and shares the mic with Crow on "Juanita," one of the collection's highlights. Ultimately, Harris has assembled a homage that would've pleased her old mentor. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars serviceable tribute album but ultimately superfluous
Tribute albums are always a tricky business. It is rather difficult to create a cohesive album of disparate artists trying to re-form familiar songs into their own unique style. This Emmylou Harris produced tribute album for Gram Parsons is certainly no exception. It's not really a bad idea in theory.Gram Parsons was many things, but "great singer" was not one of them, so to have some polished pipes singing his songs was an idea with potential.Unfortunately, hardly any of these artists can put in the emotion that Gram infused in his plaintive vocals. 5-0 out of 5 stars Why you guys don't provide 10 stars for this?
Every tracks of this album are so stunning, esp. Sleepless Nights and A Song for You. You will have to find Gram Parsons's work to guarantee his talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tribute done with class!
It was midnight and I stumbled upon a show called West 57th Sessions, from New York and unbeknown to me, what I was watching was a live performance of this tribute CD, "Return of the Grievious Angel."I managed to record the remaining 5 or 6 songs and hope to see it on video one day.Read more

The Clash's label didn't believe this debut would sell in the United States. By the time CBS got around to releasing a stateside version of the U.K. album, the British original had become an import hit. While the U.S. release contains outstanding tracks such as "Complete Control" and "Clash City Rockers," it's still missing "Cheat," "Protex Blue," "48 Hours," and "Deny." 4-0 out of 5 stars call me a "punk traitor," and stone me but i think cut the crap is better than their debut
now i know i will probally get downvoted by everyone on here, but i really do not see what the big deal about this album is. i mean like the other reviewer who gave this 3 or so stars, it is a rather soft hitting album..and i dont mean in a Fugazi type of way either. this, i would compare more to The Smiths than anything. the ablum is admittedly good, but awful overrated. songs like the original white riot, police and thieves, among others are great examples of early punk though. the US version's songs would make great b-sides attached to the end as well!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good debut, but it's a good thing they moved on.
I will probably get a good deal of heat from the punker-than-thou purists (and there's no shortage of them), but I prefer the Clash's later, more experimental work to their first two albums.I will say, however, that the UK version of their debut is preferable to the US version for the simple reason that of the 5 added songs on the US version ("Clash City Rockers", "Complete Control", "White Man in Hammersmith Palais", "I Fought the Law", and "Jail Guitar Doors"), 4 of them can be found on Essential Clash (all except "Jail Guitar Doors"), whereas of the 4 original songs that were taken off ("Deny", "Cheat", "Protex Blue", and "48 Hours"), only one of them ("Cheat") is featured on Essential Clash and the other three can't be found on other collections, at least not to my knowledge.
5-0 out of 5 stars On par with give em' enough rope
I'm torn between "Give em' enough rope" and self titled album. I would say that self titled is a lot similar to Stiff Little Fingers. Lyrics are less clearly sung than lets say "london calling". It's a lot less calm and organized which isn't a bad thing. An awesome awesome first CD and a great start for the clash. more rock and old school punk than thier other albums. if you want more early punk rock this is your best bet. if you want more clear sounding music get "london calling". ... Editorial Review

It speaks volumes about the mid-'70s music scene that the Clash's explosive debut was viewed as too provincial and raw for U.S. consumption upon its original English release in 1977. No matter--between Joe Strummer's marble-mouthed howls of righteous rage on songs like "Career Opportunities" ("The ones that never knock"), "I'm So Bored with the USA" ("Yankee dollars talk to the dictators of the world"), and "White Riot" ("I wanna riot / A riot of my own"), and the furious instrumental assault led by guitarist Mick Jones, the Clash became a hot import strictly on word of mouth--and helped establish the band as one of leaders of rock's punk revolt. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST "PUNK ROCK" ALBUM
Though I have a hard time saying for shure, this is probably my favorite Clash album. Its passion for the raw hardcore punk style has always been entertaining. Even though the Pistols style was slightly more hardcore it misses the intelegence and creativity of this album. This set the standard for many punk bands to follow, a true Punk Rock gem. Rest in peace Joe Strummer.Though its impossible to know for certain in this case, I really hope he made it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive British Punk Album
While American punk stayed pretty much underground during the 70s, British punk had a huge impact on its native country where it was seen as a threat to its government.During the latter part of the decade, kids were fed up with Britain's monarchy and ruling class so they fought them by forming bands and creating loud fast rock songs that spoke out for their anger. The Sex Pistols may have been the first to do this but the Clash did it by far the best. The Clash's first album was seen as to wild and abrasive for America so it didn't see that side of the Atlantic until long after its British release. When it was released, several songs had been replaced by others and the track sequencing was changed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage
I owned this one on vinyl, but I no longer have a record player. I've been very selective in what albums I'm willing to re-purchase. This one is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indulge in your 80s nostalgia
It's obvious from the long list of reviews that purists will quibble over which tracks from which artists represent their quintessential 80ness. But us ordinary folks, who just want a cross-section of the playlist from the alternate radio station we listened to in the 80s, won't care nearly as much. If you like a particular artist from this selection (and there are 82, so you probably do), you probably have several albums by that band or performer. I know I do.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent listening for '80s music junkies
This is a very comprehensive collection of all the "unheard" classics of 80's alternative/underground music scene. I use "unheard" in quotes because many of the songs were heard on college radio, independent music stations, etc. I was surprised by the inclusion of a few songs ("Message of Love" by Pretenders and "Ways To Be Wicked" by Lone Justice) as I wasn't too sure how "underground" they really were. I'm sure some more mainstream stations played them. But anyway it was really good to hear the Lone Justice song again after so many years. And I was REALLY pleased with the inclusions of "Swamp Thing" by The Chameleons and "When Love Breaks Down" by Prefab Sprout.
5-0 out of 5 stars The music that really matters.
I bought this box set when it first came out and it still holds a prominent place on my shelf and on my iPod.Broad blanket statements are often useless, but in this case, they apply: This box is the best collection of 80s college rock/alternative rock for your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Their pop album (4.5 stars)
At the time they released Special Beat Service in 1982, the English Beat appeared to be on the verge of a breakthrough. While their first album, I Just Can't Stop It, was a ska classic, and their second album, Wha'ppen?, was very deep into reggae, Special Beat Service toned down those genres in favor of British pop. Dave Wakeling's vocals were more compassionate than ever before and their songs were arguably their strongest overall. However, internal dissention would ultimately break up the English Beat and although several of the band members would later find success with General Public and The Fine Young Cannibals respectively, the excellent songs and performances on Special Beat Service make you wonder how far they could have gone if they were able to keep it together.
5-0 out of 5 stars FEELS GREAT!
It's really hard to keep still when listening to this cd. I've owned it on vinyl, cassette, and cd over the years and it's always put me in a great mood. Friends have always asked about it when they heard it, and subsequently purchased it. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Save It for Later is perfect and we're just lucky for the rest
Save it for Later is still one of the perfect songs of all time (though the extended versions from later are even better). There's some other great stuff off this album, like Ackee 1-2-3, and I Confess, but the whole album is solid.Actually, all of the Beat albums are solid; if you like any of their songs, I recommend the rest of their catalog to you.But Save it for Later is a special gem, so I recommend this album first. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mysical Renaissance Magic
Dead Can Dance never lets you down, especially if you are into multicultural influenced music. Here the influences come from Turkey, Egypt, Palestine, Crete, and Celtic Ireland. It seems that Brendan Perry's smoothly dark baritone voice, very masculine and sexy, contrasts nicely with Lisa Gerrard's which is a powerful voice of the priestess, a voice that can chant in any tradition or language.

By far, the most historical work of Dead Can Dance. I rememebered well when I listened for the first time: Saltarello and Black Sun. Unbeliavable!!!

Editorial Review

Listening to Dead Can Dance is a transcendental experience. Enriched with dedications to the living Gaia, their creations subsist in natural and other worldly realms. Initially crafting songs which augmented their Australian roots with Gothic and Renaissance traditions, the group have since grown to encompass a hybrid of global sounds. On Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Monument of Music
Their last one - and one of the best, for sure. This duo has single-handedly created a genre of its own which they inhabit almost by themselves. And at the last moment they gave as yet a new direction, more into tribal and latin spheres. Nevertheless, this IS Dead Can Dance: Their mood, their melodies, their voices are ever present. Listen to it more than once, more than twice - and you will find them. From "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun" to "Aion" to "Into the Labyrinth" to "Spiritchaser" they have conquered the world and will forever stay with us.

3-0 out of 5 stars Spiritchaser Digital Bongo
It seemed like it took a long time for this one to come out. I don't think this is their BEST album but there are a few winners. The production is crispy and digital like Labarynth but that can make them come off a little dry as on this one. A change in focus to African, Native American, Latin and Aboriginal ideas is cool in pricipal as Dead Can Dance was always revered for moving on with their awesome journey. I do agree with the reviewer that says that maybe some actual Africans or Latins to listen to might be better. Perhaps. This is an overall hot-weather sounding album but very digital in it's quality. I think their handeling of Native American and Aboriginal concepts goes over well as does Perry's lyrics and Gerrard's "stairway to the spheres". This probably would have been a transitional record as Spleen and Ideal bridged them from a spooky murky post punk experimental band to their most well known period. This would have bridged the more technological production and drum heavy period with whatever came next. But...this was supposed to be the last one. No more Dead Can Dance. But..then..in 2005 they go on a huge world tour and release live albums that turn out to be half full of new songs...this time..almost political (if you can believe that) with the great Joy Division influced post-punk lyrical classism that not so many can pull off. I do hope they play some more together and that this Spiritchaser is NOT the actual last official studio record by this amazing band. It may be said that perhaps a lesser record by this band is far far better than the best material of so so many. This is one of their more pychedelic offerings though. Strange though...you may notice their studio records are never very long in duration.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worst DCD album
If you are new to Dead Can Dance, please do yourself a favor and don't buy this album, which is by far the worst album they have ever recorded. It shows DCD's lack of new ideas and reworking of tired ones. You should start with _Within the Realm Of A Dying Sun_ or _The Serpents Egg_ instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great album !
I discovered Travis about 4 years back with their then latest album The Invisible Band. The album quickly became a favourite with its intensely personal songs.
4-0 out of 5 stars travis fan
This is a group whom I never hear anyone talk about. I love there music & this one is there best album. Coldplay sounding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scotland rocks
a powerfully addictive album that showcases the skills of a band that seems to combine some of the best qualities of Radiohead and Dave Matthews - while leaving out the bad behaviors and formulaic leanings of an Oasis.

2-0 out of 5 stars Immortal Memory...Forgettable Melodies
Although these compositions are characterised by pleasing tonalities recorded in richly reverberant ambiance, they are altogether lacking with regard to melodic development or musical substance. There is nothing memorable about "Immortal Memory." Emotionally flat, this disc is positively dreary. This CD contains 57 minutes of excessively introspective, monotonous music that inspires nearly as much emotion as contemplating drying cement. An antidepressant medication may be necessary after listening. A disappointing addition to my musical library.

3-0 out of 5 stars haunting yet empty
It is hard not to reference or compare Lisa Gerard's solo efforts to Dead Can Dance catalogue. I guess I was expecting something that would continue DCD tradition. The first thing that struck me was that the dead could really dance to the DCD music but they appear to be haunted and sorry ghosts in "Immortal Memory". The music is truly mournful. There is nothing wrong with mournful and haunting program for a dics, but I found those emotions falling little flat in Lisa Gerard's production. Her music sounds very ambitious but never achieves the drama and "goose bumps" effect of Gorecki's III Symphony (Symphony of Sorrow Songs) or Avro Part's "Fratres". Maybe this comparison is not fair, after all the latter two are classical music's contemporary masters, but I get an impression that Lisa Gerard's aim was equally serious. Maybe she set her goals too high.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ethereal beauty
This album is perfect for drifting off to sleep, or for a relaxing meditation session. The music is very much like a soundtrack (similar in feel to Gerrard's "Whale Rider" soundtrack work). The music is orchestral and ethereal with Gerrard's haunting vocals. She has one of the most distinctive voices in modern music and her voice is in top form here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well integrated influences from a vast range of musical sources
Sometimes they sound like cloistered monks, at other times like Druid nature worshipers, and at others like North African nomadic tribes. Their range is amazing as you hear the sounds of Palestine, Ireland, and Libya combined with a very contemporary existential presentation of dark brooding, mournful loss.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting Vocals w/ a fusion of world music
