3-0 out of 5 stars They Tried but Couldn't Quite Make It
Primal Scream came up with an interesting idea to mix a bit of their "Give Out But Don't Give Up" album with some of their newer material and then try to make it sound a little like "Exile On Main Street" by the Rolling Stones. Sounds like a great idea seeing that both the Stones and Primal are two of my favorite bands. And I like both Primal's older and newer stuff (Give Out But Don't Give Up probably being their best album to date). But what sounds like a good idea and looks great on paper somehow just didn't come out right with this album. Overall not a bad album (I give it 3.5 stars) but it just doesn't have that mystique, edge, catchiness, or whatever you want to call it to make it a great or classic album. Quite boring at times and even a little cheesy in some parts (look at the song titles). "Country Girl" is one of the highlights of the album.
4-0 out of 5 stars The tracklisting is (in)correct (edited for fixes)
I'm not sure what version the other reviewer got, but the one I bought matches the Amazon tracklisting exactly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not Their Best, But Pretty Good
Fans seem to be split on this album. Overall I really like it. I wouldn't call it a throwback to earlier Primal Scream albums but it's definitely got that flavor. If you like the first single, Country Girl, then you'll probably like the rest of the album.

Scanning the track listing of this album, it's hard not to conclude that Blur aren't a little embarrassed by their early work. Opening with the chart one-two of "Beetlebum" and "Song 2" (from their eponymous 1997 watershed album) rather than the baggy groove of their debut single, "She's So High," it's apparent that they desire to accentuate their more recent efforts. Running order aside, it's hard to fault the 18 songs which chart the life and times of one of Britain's smartest, most inventive bands. From the tuxedoed ballad "The Universal" through the cartoon Brit-pop of numbers such as "Parklife" and "Country House" to the freshly recorded indie-influenced "Music Is My Radar," their searching intelligence and deft hooks are never less than admirable. 4-0 out of 5 stars FIFA ROAD TO WORLD CUP 98
all i can say is that the best song here is "song 2". i remember when i bought the fifa road to world cup 98 video game. whenever i hear this song it reminds me of the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars second nirvana
this british group reminds me of the Beatles. Creativity, profoundness andto be freight with emotions and thoughts which were peculiar to the Beatles come to resurface as if reborn in another body.Songs such as Parklife, Song 2 are fabulous in two words. Everytime I watch their videoclip 'coffee & tv' I burst into tears. So meaningful and unique.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars, duh
Since Blur is my favorite band, it only makes sense that I would like a Greatest Hits CD, but there are actually a number of things to criticize about the Best of Blur. For one thing, this compilation was made before the Think Tank album came out. Thus, the somewhat significant Blur hit "Crazy Beat" is not featured on the Best of Blur: a shame since I would consider it to be a pretty good song by the band. Also, my three favorite Blur songs are not featured on this CD (I'm Just A Killer For Your Love, Brothers & Sisters, He Thought of Cars). I strongly believe they ought to have been included, though, because these tracks seem to most clearly display Blur's skills in that they all have amazingly catchy rhythms, dandy lyrics, and are completely original and unique. Contrary to what others say, I don't think Blur is anything like Oasis. Sure, they're both British, but Blur has much more originality, more noise, and a bit more cleverness (although I do really like Oasis too). Anyway, the Best of Blur does have its upsides too. It does after all include the non-album song "Music Is My Radar", and compile a few of the band's best songs. There is of course the track that made them famous: "Song 2", as well as their mellow yet really good song "Coffee and TV". Some selections are really crappy, though, such as some of Blur's weakest attempts at soft songs (No Distance to Run, To the End). When push comes to shove, though, this is a quite commendable "best of" CD that Blur fans ought to try out for the hard to find single "Music Is My Radar" (although it's not that great of a Blur song) as well as for the Live C.D. that comes with it, if you choose to check that version out . ... coldplay is a great band. this album is for real fans.
4-0 out of 5 stars Quite good concert but sloppy editing
It's always fun watching concert DVD's. For one thing, being a musician, I can actually watch not only how they play the songs but see the musicianship of the band without the benefit of redoing takes and overdubbing certain parts. It's still a bit too early for a Coldplay DVD but still it's quite a good one regardless, it's just marred by the MTV-style editing that I'm very much despising at the moment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of the Asian HDCD Edition (CD only)
I have some of Coldplay's studio albums, and frankly, they don't hold a candle to the live performances. There's no zing zang zip to the studio stuff. It's kind of pedantic, unenergetic, bland, and...well...plain boring.Live 2003 is the polar opposite.I can only conclude that the studio work is necessary for them to write and flesh out their new material, but it's in live performance that the songs actually breath...where the magic happens. This band, more than any other I've come across, needs to be heard in its live incarnation.Coldplay sucks up the energy from that audience, concentrates it, changes it, then spits it back out at them gloriously.I'm going to upset some people, but I'd say avoid the studio albums and go for their live discs and some concert tickets. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Strung Out Below a Necklace of Carnival Lights"
"Misplaced Childhood" is Marillion's third album, originally released in 1985. It's a concept album, and every track is special, I think.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums that came out in the eighties!
As a fan of all kinds of music stretching from groups like Genesis and Yes to metal bands like Queensryche and Judas Priest to more soft rock like Journey and Madonna I find Misplaced Childhood to be one of the best and definitely one of the most melodic albums that came out in the eighties. Linking the record's beautiful painted cover with the music it creates a colourful journey through melodic guitar riffs and solo, a deep and saga-like keyboard sound and Fish's catchy and beautiful singing. With its mix of symphonic rock and progressive rhythms it inspired bands like Dream Theater and also became one of Mike Portnoy's (drummer of DT) favourite albums of all time. But while many of modern day's progressive groups have more of a edge and aggressiveness to their sound Misplaced Childhood, and Marillion as a whole during this era, was more melodic and clear sounded with a relaxing tone.

The beat that got a generation dancing and brought ska back into the public eye. Produced by Elvis Costello, then still a boy wonder himself, the album built on the sound of the Specials' first two singles, and gave the world its first extended look at Two Tone. Inspired writing and arranging (much of it down to founder Jerry Dammers) with Terry Hall as the laconic front man made for a perfect combination, the riddim of ska and the speed of punk. As a testament to its power, two decades haven't lessened its impact. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two tone ska classic. The perfect blend of strong song writing, fun, ska and touch of punk energy
When this album came out most punx I knew were totally into it.I know I was. There'd been that music scene of the B 52's, BLONDIE, ELVIS COSTELLO, JOE JACKSON and TALKING HEADS.Punk had exploded onto the scene as well, of course, The SEX PISTOLS, The CLASH, The DEAD KENNEDYS, BLACK FLAG, CIRCLE JERKS, BAD BRAINS.Punk had always had some sorta connection to reggae, BAD BRAINS being the quintessinal creator of sublime punk as well as non-sleepy reggae songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pressure Drop
Well I'm not a kid, but M. Fantino, The Specials didn't influence The Clash on Pressure Drop. Toots and the Maytals did, seeing as how Pressure Drop is actually a Maytals song, not a Clash song. Just a heads up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Err, ummm, Yeah...
It irks me a little when people actually like bands like No Doubt and Sublime. It infuriates me that no one knows that the Specials could veritably rip all these new school California pansies new ones. The Specials are my all time favorite SKA band, and this is hands down the best album from them. It's got that stunning blend of punk, reggae and funk that no one has really been able to copy succesfully. Everyone I have revealed this album seems to adore it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Only slight sophomore slump
When I initially got a hold of Gomez's second album, it was after a solid year of listening to their debut Bring It On almost every single day. In retrospect it's inevitable that Liquid Skin sounded like a disappointment at the time. Most of the tracks here are more pastiches than songs, as Gomez tries to blur their influences to the point where true originality comes out on the other end. In 2001 it seemed like overproduced mush, but time (and the iTunes shuffle feature) has been kind to Liquid Skin.
3-0 out of 5 stars Liquid Skin
Gomez are a hard band to pin down, drawing their inspiration from far to many places to considered tradtional pop rock, yet not innovative or left field enough to fit into any sort of indie/underground grouping. Thats always left them as in a sort of no mans land of musical genres and despite having had some considerable meant they've never really broken through to the mainstream.
2-0 out of 5 stars Average musicians making average music
I first heard the song Rosalita from a friend's mix CD and thought it was a decent little song. I gave the album a listen after reading all the rave reviews here. Maybe my expectations were just too high after reading all the praise, but I found this album unimpressive. The music is trite and uninteresting; not that it's bad, but it just lacks anything really that original. The lyrics are too heavy-handed and recycled at times. There are a few decent tunes on this album, but overall, it's average at best, IMO. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my most treasured albums
I got this as a present from a friend.I still don't quite like Wilco, but I learned to like Bragg after this. His sarcasm & reticence combines nicely with Guthrie's lyrics.Great songs to shout along to in the car, especially Joe DiMaggio.Black Wind Blowing is sad but well suited to being played very loud.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but disappointing...3 1/2 stars
My younger brother made a good point, I thought, when he told me this album should never have been made.Instead, he said, Woody Guthrie's daughter should have found two other artists--another singer, and another band, even--and had THEM do volume two.Hayden and The Flaming Lips.Soltero and Yo La Tengo.Daniel Johnston and Neutral Milk Hotel.Morrissey and The Postal Service. It could have still used Woody Guthrie's lyrics, but it would have been something fresh...not this...and that format could have gone on indefinitely for any number of albums.
3-0 out of 5 stars What did you expect, it's a sequel!
Of course it's not as good as the first. They took the best material they had and used it on Volume 1. Well, mostly. Somehow they left behind "Remember the Mountain Bed," a wistful song with a fairy-tale quality; "Joe Dimaggio's Done It Again," a rollicking period piece; and "Feed Of Man," which I'm still a little puzzled by, but in a good way. I just noticed that the three songs I've mentioned are all sung by Jeff Tweedy. That may be a coincidence, but he does seem to take the reins of this project over from Billy Bragg. Bragg fans needn't worry, though; it's all about the lyrics, and the legacy of the greatest folksinger ever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamy.
"Souvlaki" shimmers and floats.Layers and layers of hauntingly ethereal melodies and gentle, soothing vocals create shadowy dreamscapes in the mind of listeners. The excellent studio production allows for a full, rich sound that nearly bursts at all the right times. The overall mood of the album is sad, but not depressing or melancholy.Said sadness usually comes in the form of a vague overtone of loneliness ("40 Days" is a prime example of this) My choice track is "Souvlaki Space Station," which showcases beautifully hollow reverb guitar and paints a mental image of floating through starry skies. If you prefer your shoegaze in relatively abstract form and appreciate pure atmosphere, "Souvlaki" is perfect for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars That's Good Shoegazing
Indeed, Souvlaki by Slowdive is a shoegazing mainstay.Though not as highly acclaimed or as widely regarded as My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, Slowdive's second album is, in my humble opinion, the second best record the shoegazing subgenre has to offer. In fact, among the sub-subgenre of shoegazing, dream pop, Souvlaki is about as dreamy and ethereal as anything, MBV included. The album opener, "Alison," is a highpoint.A truly beautiful song.In fact the first four songs are absolutely breathtaking.Throw into the mix "Altogether" and "Dagger" and you've got a mesmerizing record here.An aboslute must for shoegazing fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very nice - but definitely not five star material!
This is most certainly a lovely album, and definitely Slowdive's most diverse. But one of the previous reviewers is correct in identifying that there are actually a couple of not so great moments on here. I always thought that "Alison" never really gelled with the rest of the album, and I'm sure they could have done a better job of "When The Sun Hits" if they had put in a little more effort!

There's nothing particularly original about Kasabian. The hirsute Leicester band swaggers like the Stone Roses, plays dance-rock like Primal Scream, and mouths off like Oasis. Singer Tom Meighan even once famously derided Strokes singer Julian Casablancas in an interview with the NME as a "posh f---ing skier." But these are also the things that make Kasabian's debut so endearing. It's an album that spills over with personality and confidence, delivering massive club anthems in the form of songs like "Processed Beats," "Cutt Off" and "L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever)," where the band finds just the right balance between primitive riffs and space-age grooves. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Support mediocrity: buy Kasabian
It says a lot when a young band's debut album is copy-protected. The record company seems to broadcast to the entire world that Kasabian are the next big thing, so you better get in line and BUY the thing now. Thanks to my local library, I found out the real reason for slapping a copy-protection on this album thereby moving more units: Kasabian are lame.

I owned an older CD of this from the 80s, one of his rocking-est albums and my favorite, along with "Delivery Man". The definitely superior sonic remaster (not a lot of obvious re-mixing for a change!), the bonus disc and informative liner notes really made this worth buying. I subsequently bought the other remasters with bonus discs, and now have a huge library of THE Elvis (as I heard him claim on a radio interview in 1977), with loads of demos, alternative versions and tasty goodies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Merely a "good" collection of Echo songs - it's not the best stuff ever, but it's still pretty decent
Echo & The Bunnymen is most well-known for their 80's hit "The Killing Moon" (which was featured in the cult hit movie "Donnie Darko"). While this is a great song, the rest on here just aren't as good. Echo & The Bunnymen are clearly pretty talented, but the singer and the lyrics just aren't that good or interesting most of the time. None of the songs are bad here, thankfully, but they're not great either - they're all indeed catchy, however. Musically it's pretty standard 80's indie/pop rock, as there's little innovation to be found here. If you're an Echo & The Bunnymen fan then this is the collection to get, but if you're looking for great songs you won't really find them here. I would argue that "The Killing Moon" alone bumps this up to a "4" from a "3.5". This is merely a "good" (arguably decent) CD. Slightly recommended.

With a name designed to shock, and song titles like "Oh Shit?" and "Orgasm Addict" the Buzzcocks were proud proponents of British late-'70s punk rock. But in retrospect, it's easier to see what else they accomplished--some of the catchiest, most provocative pop singles ever. Pete Shelley expressed heartbreak and frustration ("Ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn't have fallen in love with?" goes one catchy chorus) without falling victim to lovey-dovey cliches. This definitive 1979 collection nicely captures the Manchester quartet's tight melodies, economic writing and appropriately fast pace.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bliss...
Amazing album!Embodies that soundscape west/coast mid-west wave over of the US....the backbone of the mood of the 90's for me.Mix the influences of this band and the darker contemplative Slint Spiderland...you've defined the 90's.This album is pure magic in its ability to alter my mood to shoegazing happiness....I close my eyes and I'm in the most formative years of my life feeling the warm summer nights lying on the grass with my close friends, ciggarettes and endless chatter and laughter, staring at the setting suns pink/orange clouds, awaiting another endless night.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mix of heaven and Las Vegas
I think this is a mundane version of previously heavenly Cocteau Twins. Much of the dreamlike quality in Treasure (darkly) and Victorialand (airily) is lost, and Blue Bell Knoll is a more emotionally powerful album. While the songs are pretty good and Liz's voice is still strong, the listener feels that he is simply listening to songs instead of being engulfed in a mystic atmosphere. There may be reasons to love the Twins' matured sound, but I am one of the people who miss their more creative young days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious "Mindscape Moodpieces" That Defy Casual Description...A+
The Cocteau Twins are some of the most unique musicians one may ever encounter. Their sound is largely ineffable - something that is not easily defined, elusive, shimmering, yet most lucid. The lyrics are largely unscrutable yet serve almost as a form of a hypnotic chant in the backdrop of sheer ambient engineered soundscapes. To summarize, I really find myself enchanted by their sound and "Heaven or Las Vegas" serves as a great introduction and encapsulate of their overall thoroughput.

Editorial Review

The Dead Can Dance chanteuse ditches her partner, Brendan Perry, for this solo outing. Mixing middle-eastern drones, Balkan stringed instruments, Chinese percussion, and the European classical tradition, it's a singularly beautiful and mesmerizing album that occupies a genre all of its own. File next to Chant and Jan Garbarek, and be sure to alert progressive-minded classical buffs.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Floored
I am floored by the power and immensity of this voice. When Lisa Gerrard sings, it is not so much that her voice fills the room as it becomes the very atmosphere surrounding the listener. It is no wonder that Paul Oakenfold chooses her voice to blend with his ethereal mixes to create an experience like touching the numinous. There is no comparison. The range of Lisa Gerrard's voice is simply breathtaking, as evidenced in "Sanvean."Her work as half of Dead Can Dance was awesome, but she stands even more impressively on her own merits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now we know what aliens sound like
Her voice cannot be human. Seriously. I first heard it on the way to work one night("Hearts of Space,"I think)and was almost mesmerized into driving off the road."So that's the way they capture us,those aliens!" They allow us to hear a beautiful, haunting voice, and we are rendered helpless.Seriously,though. You have got to hear this album. If "Sanvean" doesn't have anyhave any effect on you,I suggest you have someone search for your pulse. The words are not in English, but the passion it evokes speak volumes. Her voice is sheer heaven, and rips your heart out of your chest, but you keep going back for more because hers is the sirens song.Too beautiful to describe.

5-0 out of 5 stars operatic and illuminating solace
This is Lisa Gerrard at her best. There are tracks on this album that move me in such a way as the best opera has.Track 4 (Sanvean) is one of the most beautiful songs I can remember hearing in a long while.I had the pleasure of recently seeing Dead Can Dance at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago and was able to hear Lisa Gerrard perform both Sanvean and The Rite (track 5) live; I had tears in my eyes...she has the most enchanting and moving voice. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys opera or music that has wonderful cultural influence. ... Read more

When exactly Radiohead transformed themselves from an average alterna-rock band into an avant-garde juggernaut is difficult to pinpoint, but in terms of recording, they took the great leap forward somewhere around the time of their second album, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good - but like many uncommon LP or single, expensive.
Some people like the Acoustic version of creep; I have to say I hate it. I heard a rumour, a sort of urban myth, that the guitar crunches on the album version were an attempt to "sabotage the song" (an attempt which backfired) and I have to say the acoustic is probably what Thom would have wanted. Personally I dislike the vocals and it lacks the complexity of other songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best song is Permanent Daylight
I like it because it reminds me of that twilight zone episode and it rocks too! It reminds us not to mess (wanted to use a stronger word) up too bad. It must be hard with your head on backwards...More so everything else rocks on this EP from Louis mistreated to well the rest of the songs. Definenent must have in your radiohead collection

4-0 out of 5 stars Better then some of there LP's
This EP is better then pablo honey and kid a. I would not pay the 22.00 retail price though for it but getting it used for like 7.00 is well worth it. Other reviewers have mention that the version of creep on this cd is not so good. I think at the time Thom recorded it, he was so fed up with people asking him to play the song all the time, so he decided to not to care how bad he sounds on it. The only complaint is that the last 2 songs before creep are so short, could'nt the band atleast add a couple of minutes on to them. This cd made me more interested in there b-sides which i think are less fussy then there lp songs. Also if you are still waiting for the next cd to come out this one would kill time nicely. ... You'd have to stretch back to 1967 to London's psychedelic underground(a time and a place that Blur is admittedly fond of) to find a band that revelsas much in its Britishness. And on its third album, Blur takes 30 years of coolEnglish rock, throws it into an art-punk Cuisinart, and ends up with amasterpiece of timeless hooks and Cockney attitude. Like the Kinks at theirsatirical best, Blur paints warm and funny portraits of quintessentially Englishcharacters ("Tracy Jacks," "Parklife," "The DebtCollector"), delivering them with early Small Faces swagger, wiggy SydBarrett-via-Julian Cope production, XTC circa "Respectable Street"vocal hooks ("ooh-we-ooh"), and a cynical Buzzcocks detachment. Theband members are mods, of course, borrowing fashion tips from the pre-glam DavidBowie, tempos from the Jam, and actor Phil Daniels (the star ofRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars MR ALAN WILLIAMSON IS BRILLIANT!!
OK. So I was duped. Alan Williamson--see The Stone Roses review--is the funniest man alive! Thinking he was serious, I got all riled up and blasted him a new one over this Stone Roses album and ended up sounding like a complete arrogant putz in the process. Bravo, sir! His reviews are hilarious and well worth searching out, especially the Beatles REVOLVERand the one (S) about Kelley Clarkson and womens shoes! Very funny stuff.
1-0 out of 5 stars I don't like this album
When Mike and the Mechanics ushered in the Britpop era with Looking Back Over My Shoulder, it was only a matter of time before these dopes attempted to jump on the bandwagon. How they won so many Brit awards with this rubbish is beyond me. It must have been rigged!

2-0 out of 5 stars Modern Life Is Rubbish.
High record sales are often inversely proportionate to the effect on the morale of the bands concerned. Blur became household names in Britain because of this album, especially through cheerful cockney singalong sinle "Parklife", but it messed them up in terms of moving on as a band: it is also the album which was responsible for singer/writer Damon Albarn's mental breakdown.

Fuelled by the ska of Prince Buster ("Madness"), and inspired by the insanity of British music, right from the start Madness were a quintessentially English band. Two-tone more by association than fact, they came to the fore at the same time as the Specials, with a ska beat, a pop heart, and a lunatic smile (who else would update "Swan Lake" in such an unorthodox way?). While the title track lives on beyond them, there were plenty of other gems here, including "Night Boat to Cairo" and "My Girl." The Nutty Sound was infectious as measles, but a lot more fun. 5-0 out of 5 stars They went..................one step beyond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey you!!!!!!!!!, lately Madness have come to my mind due to young advertisers for alcoholic beverages that are currently trying to introduce good taste in music to the depressing likes youth have in this days in Mexico (or maybe this advertisersare snob and try to impress ignorant fools i dont know), one of the first memories i have in music in my life is definitelly with Madness, actually i think it was the first one, before Beatles, before Zep, before Presley before Kiss or any other artist. I should have been like seven or eight years old when i liked to watch the Madness videos that were transmited saturday morning between cartoons, before all that space were filled with advertising as today, i liked that band when i was a child and i love them today cuts like "just another day" , "nigth boat to Cairo", "Michael Caine" ,"my girl" and of course "one step beyond"are timeless classics , band such as The Mighty Mighty Bostons and many others cant deny Madness influence they were plenty funny and genious, One Step Beyond is the debut album actually neither themselves were capable to achieve a bigger sucess after this one but the roots of ska punk are there untill the end of time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing disappointing here..
I remember first listening to this and loving every single second of it. I just listened to it about 10 minutes ago and loved every single second of it even harder.
