"I gave you the Midas touch/You turned round and scratched out my heart!"In my opinion you cannot understand Waterloo to Anywhere without seriously listening to Down in Albion. That is probably because I have them in rotation on my player. If there are flaws in either record it is the missing hand of the other master. But since Carl allegedly taught Peter the wherefore's of the guitar I'll give him the benefit of the doubt about who is the better tunesmith.I can't wait until the get back in the studio together.

4-0 out of 5 stars This US release is a better value, but is missing one track
The track listing for this album is:
4-0 out of 5 stars Where's B.U.R.M.A.?
This is my favorite album of the past 2 months. Unfortunatley, I can only say that half the songs are worth listening to and one of those didn't make it to the US version! Three songs into the UK version I was convinced I was listening to the album of the year, the next six bored me to tears. The US version spreads the wealth a bit by moving Doctors and Dealers to the middle of the album but that portion is still the weakest link.

1-0 out of 5 stars I might have liked this before
Radiohead released their last 3 cds, but they didnt release it then and it proves to belimited in concept, tired in execution and basically reveals the end of the line for the group in its current direction. I cant wait to see where they head next.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Suggestion
Get over f***ing ok computer.I do not find any fascination or anything superior, unique, or defining within ok computer. It has some good songs. I do not consider ok computer as anything but a stepping stone toward Kid A and then beyond, in *my* personal interst - in generosity I see it as an INSULAR event, which means you do not expect it twice under ANY circumstances, and do not allow its shadow, if it has one to you, to land anywhere that it does not apply. In this situation it does NOT.Your listening capability is being colored by prior experiece, which is degrading to artistic value, and furthermore a selfish act.It is FINE to draw comparison, it is not okay to put two unlike things on an unbalanced scale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet never sounded so good before or since...
So back in '97 I was driving along minding my own business when Bittersweet Symphony came on the radio and smacked me in the face. At least thats what it felt like. A pleasant smack. The kind that made me feel as if I had been zoned out all day until I heard the song and suddenly I felt alive! OK, maybe thats a bit dramatic, but you get the picture. I fell in love with the song, and even now 10 years later I still get swept up in the emotion of the song.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the Hype
But for "The Drugs don't Work," which is marginal at best, this album is boring...cookie-cutter, nothing original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Bitter Here,It's all Sweet!
This album is a masterpiece! Most albums start out promising, then about three songs into it we lose interest and...turn it off. This album will surprise you,it get's better towards the end,"Neon Wilderness" is more of an intermission than an actual song,so you can't actually count that as a song, although I'm sure that there are some over zealous Verve fans out there that do,and that's ok.From the opening, soothing string arrangement of "Bitter Sweet Symphony" our hearts are held captive, then the whooshing rush of the full orchestra crashes in (this part,by the way,is the sample that Richard Ashcroft used and had to share writing credits with Jagger and Richards)and we are hooked without a doubt, to this beautiful song."Sonnet" is a touching ballad about friendship,"The Drugs Don't Work" isn't a song about drug abuse as the title may seem to impose, rather it's a moving ballad that Ashcroft wrote about the death of his father,it's difficult to listen to this song and not think of a loved one who has passed on."Lucky Man" is a brilliant song that Ashcroft dedicates to his wife when he performs it live.Simply put, every song on this album is a gem.Go out and buy this album now.Enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Its a Great Beat
I grew up on the English Beat and they are still one of my favorite bands today. There is something about the ska from that era that really appeals to me.My first exposure to them was in the early '80s when my brother was in college and the Beat were a college radio staple.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the beat you're looking for..
Definitely could've been another song or two added to this best of, but what a brilliant collection. I can't keep it out of my cd player.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beat This: The Best of the English Beat
This album is great package, it has most of the songs a fan of the English Beat could want.Durring high school I listened to a great deal of ska, roots reggae, 1st, 2nd and 3rd wave ska from England, the U.S. and Jamaica.I saw some English Beat but other than obscure record collectors its not something the average record store keeps in stock.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as great as fans would have you think
Like the film, the Crash soundtrack is highly over-rated. Don't get me wrong--it's not bad by any means; indeed, Mark Isham is one of my favorite artists, and his score is much better than the film for which it was composed. But to claim this work is groundbreaking or the best soundtrack of the year/decade is naive and myopic.
5-0 out of 5 stars One the best sountracks in the 2005!
The movie crash was outstanding but one the most thing i loved from "Crash" was the soundtrack Wow! there is a lot amazing songs like "In The Deep","Maybe Tomorrow" and "Crash" all them are excellent,"Maybe Tomorrow" is my favorite song in this sountrack is a well made song and deserves to be nominated for best oringinal song beacuse in the deep was great but maybe tommrrow was way better, the song Crash was a little weird but still on the greatness, with an excellent mixed genres, the crash sountack is must to have for those who enjoy an oringinal and unbelivably beautiful sountrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Music Experience
This album is an experience. The songs are remarkable.I dont know if the movie makes the songs amazing or if the songs made the movie amazing or a little bit of both but this is the best soundtrack to a movie I have ever heard.I listend to this soundtrack on the bus on the way to my state track meet and it really kept me relaxed and even motovated. It might seem a bit odd that a down tempo album could motovate a runner, however, these songs were uplifitng and lively.Dont wait, get this album, I cant say enough about it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely grows on you
The first time I ever heard this album, I have to say, I was not blown away.Sure, there were some good songs, but it was not a spectacular album in my view. Then, after hearing it a few more times, it started to really grow on me and I realized what a great album it was.Don't give up on it after one listen, because you will be pleasantly surprised. It blends elements of blues, jazz, funk, and rock to make a potpourri of some great music.I think I might just like this album better than Split the Difference, although it is a very close race.I think my favorite tracks on this album are Tijiuana Lady, Rie's Car, Love is Better Than a Warm Trombone, and Get Myself Arrested.Overall, great album.. I hope you enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gomez started a brilliant career with this one
"Bring it on" wasn't recorded in a big studio. Gomez didn't have any celebrity treatment making this album. They were just high school kids making a phenomenal rock album in a garage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really cool psychedelic sound mixed with a bluesy sound
This CD has flavors of the late 60s/early 70s psychedelic sound incorporated into some modern alternative music. The first track Get Miles reminds me a little of the sound of Strawberry Alarm Clock's Incense & Peppermints, while Make No Sound, The Come Back and 78 Stone Wobble could have been extra songs from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Tijuana Lady and Bubble Gum Years reminds me a little of the old Pink Floyd sound when Syd Barrett was the lead signer. Tracks like Get Myself Arrested, Free To Run, and Rie's Wagon have a bluesy sound to them. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only CD set you'll ever need
I didn't know I was a Clash fan until I bought this CD set. I went to the store and saw it on the rack. There were four songs that I already knew and figured there'd be at least a few more I would like so I bought it. Out of the 40 songs, I can listen to atleast 22 over and over and over again and never get sick of them! I copied the my favorite songs onto another disk and put it in my car's CD player... I haven't put another disk in in over six months. For the amount of great music you'll get, there isn't a better value out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beatles of Punk
Out of all the classic punk-rock groups, the Clash were the most skilled, most important, and best. From their days of loud, intense screaming which you can barely understand (White Riot, London's Burning, Complete Control) to the London Calling/Sandinista! (not sure if I spelt that right) era, when they were experimenting with everything, to their last days, the Essential Clash covers the Clash perfectly, with very few fillers.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Is Real Punk!
Forget bands like Green Day and Good Charlotte. For real punk rock, I suggest going back to the core, to the originators, such as The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and my personal favorite, The Clash. The Clash define punk rock for me.

Editorial Review

With the swaggering chords of the opening "Rock'N'Roll Star," Oasis announced that big, brash Brit rock was here to stay--at least for a few years. They wore their rock & roll with an angry young sneer, a Mancunian petulance wedded to a vision of cathartic release. Their supersonic two-guitar attack took them "Up in the Sky," where they would "Live Forever" or burn out in a blaze of alcoholic glory. Noel Gallagher's songs weren't subtle--or shy of overt plagiarism--but, spat out in the Lennonesque snarl of little brother Liam, they took on a venomous power that had millions of young Brits taking them at their own arrogant word. In the U.S., meanwhile, the response was more Maybe than Definitely.Read more

i prefer this record over the stone roses debut which everyone thinks is the best british record ever.this still sounds fresh unlike the dated roses album.this is a great record and definitely oasis' best.better than morning glory btw.morning glory has the trinity of champagne supernova, don't look back in anger and wonderwall, but this DM has live forever and everything else on the album.the harder rockin oasis will always be better and this album deserves all the love it gets.

Greatest Hits chronicles the remarkable journey of Mr Robert Williams, from being the "fat dancer from Take That" (c. Noel Gallagher) to the multi-million pound jewel in EMI’s crown. Assembled in chronological order, all the hits are here, except for his initial solo outing "Freedom", and it’s interesting to see how his sound evolves from wannabe Britpop buffoon on the sub-Oasis pubrock of "Old Before I Die" to the subtle captivating melodies of "Feel" and "Come Undone". There are so many great tracks that it’s impossible to list them all, but highlights have to be the barnstorming "Let Me Entertain You", the bouncy, floor-filling "Rock DJ" and the song that madeth the man, "Angels". The two latest additions to his canon--"Radio" and "Misunderstood" clearly have one eye on the past, the other on the future – with the latter an instant classic Robbie ballad from the Bridget Jones 2 soundtrack and the former a foray into the world of electro pop that sounds like a warped Human League track from the 1980s. This has to be Robbie’s forte, his ability to make great pop records that always sound fresh and full of energy. Every home should have a copy of this album, and chances are, by the end of 2004, most of them will. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars THE CLASH/ WHATS NOT TOO LIKE
I will admit I have mixed feelings for this album. I'm shure many other clash fans feel the same. while some claim this is the album that ruined their career, others will say that it is their finest work. I personally think this album is very good, but not the same or nearly as good as their two first albums. The clash after having exploded in the punk scene, they moved on to break music barriars. While I miss their original style, its hard not to appreciate theirtheir later work. No matter what which part of their career you look at, you are for shure absorbing some good music. Rest in peace Joe Strummer. We can't be certain about these kind of things but I really hope he made it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Clash - COMBAT ROCK (1982)
The final album to feature the full Clash group - Mick Jones was fired and replaced on 1985's CUT THE CRAP - COMBAT ROCK is also commonly referred to as the album on which The Clash "sold out". The group changed their sound from punk rock to new wave, losing much - but not all - of their fire in the process. Their strategy, if you want to call it that, worked; they scored their biggest hit ever with the dance/funk tune "Rock the Casbah" and COMBAT ROCK shot to the top of both the U.K. and U.S. charts. There's a number of other greats here, such as the similarly funked-out "Overpowed By Funk", the reggae-tinged "Straight to Hell" and "Car Jamming", the strong opening track "Know Your Rights", and the laid-back saxophone-filled "Sean Flynn". The rest of the songs are good, but lack the punch - the aforementioned "fire" - of previous Clash compositions. COMBAT ROCK continues to explore different musical styles, and though the result isn't as impressive as the earlier Clash releases, it's still a fun and well-made album.

4-0 out of 5 stars The final album by the Strummer/Jones Clash.
I think it's a bit steep to call this the worst album by The Clash. The fact that they could achieve commercial success while still making very interesting and original music (unlike my least favourite album, "Give 'Em Enough Rope") makes this quite a valid album, especially with suchmusical escapades as "Sean Flynn" and immediately catchy material like the two songs - you know which, "Car Jamming", and "Straight to Hell".

Their goth-sounding name and dour visual image aside, the prolific duo of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard produce wildly eclectic but utterly unique music. 4-0 out of 5 stars Multi-culturalism and Cross-culturalism
The work of Dead Can Dance, Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, might be best described as cross-cultural. Some songs sound like Celtic songs from the middle ages while others sound like Islamic chants from the desert countries. On "Into the Labyrinth", I found that The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove; The Wind That Shakes the Barley; The Carnival is Over; Tell Me about the Forest; Ariadne; and HOw Fortunate the Man with None were my favorite 6 selections. Perry's voice has a dreamy quality that is hard to describe, kind of like Dean Martin does Lebanon. I certainly like the multicultural blending of musical traditions that Dead Can Dance offers.

Elvis Costello kicked off his debut album with a formal device that would also serve his next two long-players well: the first thing you hear is his voice. at the time that this album came out i had just lost my little boy, my husband had left me for a woman 24 years my junior, & i had a serious rash all up & down my left side. i was DEPRESSED. then i heard this music & suddenly i wanted to wear lipstick again. i wanted to wear lipstick & i wanted to dance. what a great album. and to this day in 2006 it still is! the best elvis costello album known to man (and that's saying something).

There are myriad details that illustrate why Wire's 1977 debut is bulletproof--or at least wildly compelling. There's the count of tracks--21 to be exact--the snare-cracked pulsing roll of "Reuters," which sports one of punk's greatest first lines: "Our own correspondent is sorry to tell of an uneasy time, that all is not well." There's the six songs that last under a minute (and at least that many more that last under a minute and a half), all of them urgently poised on Colin Newman's deadpan urgency--a laconic riposte to the shouting that in '77 was already central to punk. There's album closer "12XU," which Minor Threat would make anthemic in their short hardcore-forging career. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a seminal band for a reason, and it all started with this album
Really, what more can I say about Wire's Pink Flag that hasn't already been said? The album is so good, so burned in the retina of my brain (even though I still cannot for the life of us unscramble Graham Lewis' lyrics), so nearly perfect that it's sort of hard to write about. In a perfect world, whatever nonsense I may have to say about the record would be moot, as you should already own this record (along with Chairs Missing and 154, Wire's second and third albums respectively). But for those of you who may be enraptured by the recent flurry of post-punk revivalists who continue to make quite a stir, let the reissue campaign of the first three records introduce you to the band that Interpol, Maximo Park, Franz Ferdinand, and Bloc Party only wish they could be.

4-0 out of 5 stars Trainlistening.
In a world where every other movie has it's own soundtrack, few stand out. This one does to me. Obviously a liking for the movie helps, but even without the film this is an excellent listen. A great mix of old and new, mellow and upbeat. I mean when you stick Iggy, Lou Reed, and New Order on the same disc as Brian Eno, Blur, and Bedrock.....well you can't go wrong. Still a great play ten years later, and should be found cheap anyplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the movie...?
When I started listening to this, it had been a year or so since I had seen the movie (which I liked), and I couldn't remember which scenes correponded to which tracks. Therefore I enjoyed it as a completley seperate work of art. When I re-watched the movie recently, I was almost dissapointed; the music actually seemed weakened in the context of the scenes. Don't get me wrong, Trainspotting is excellent, but the soundtrack stands indepedently and possibly even above it as a pop-culture watermark.5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any lover of music.
I finally bought this CD after putting it off for years. I mainly bought it for Underworld, but this whole CD is cool. I'm not into Iggy or Lou, but I don't skip any tracks on this CD. This came out in 1996, but sounds so fresh and relevant to today's culture. My least favorite track is, Lou Reed's "Perfect Day," and my absolute favorite is, Blur's "Sing," which barely beat Primal Scream's "Trainspotting." The track that A track that surprised me is Pulp's hilarious "Mile End." Brian Eno is always good, and "Deep Blue Day" will give Eno more record sales. Blur's lead singer has the last track called, "Closet Romantic," which is a more of an electronic song. If you like emotionally charged tunes then go get this album. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Sensual World a bit over my head
I love Kate Bush, I have had a couple of albums in the past and was looking to get some in my collection of CDs. Unfortunately "A Sensual World" didnt really gel with me, very esoteric and hard to understand and empathise with. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great songs from 1968-71, but nothing from late 1971-74
THE BAND: The main players consisted of Steve Winwood (lead vocals, piano, organ, guitar, bass guitar, percussion), Jim Capaldi (drums, percussion, vocals), and Chris Wood (flute, sax, organ, percussion, vocals). Additional members included Rick Grech (bass guitar), Jim Gordon (drums & percussion), and on-again off-again Dave Mason (guitar, mellotron, sitar, bass guitar, vocals).
1-0 out of 5 stars Good, but why buy this when there is Smiling Phases!?!?!?
For a penny less, you can get every song on "Feelin's Alright" AND ELEVEN MORE SONGS from the compilation Smiling Phases.Sure, this one disc compilation contains *great music* but what shmoe would buy it when you can get more music on 2-CDs for less money????Perhaps another reviewer can fill me in on the "logic" of buying this over Smiling Phases because I don't see it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of Traffic's earlier work.
Feelin' Alright: The Very Best of Traffic brings you the best of the earlier efforts of one of the truly great bands of the late 60s/early 70s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overrated or Underrated?
This album may be considered overrated for anyone familiar with a some music-related publications, such as the New Musical Express (NME) and the British newspaper The Observer, which both placed it as #1 on a list of Best Albums and Best British Albums respectively. In another sense, it may be seen as underrated because when you mention "The Stone Roses", (unless, perhaps, you are somewhere in Great Britain or are talking to a well-versed music fan), nobody knows who you are talking about! At any rate, I feel that this album deserves attention.
4-0 out of 5 stars answering mr. alan williamson
Mike and the Mechanics ushering in the Madchester scene? You must subscribe to Roling Stone magazine, 'lad'. "The Living Years" was just soft adult fake prog pablum created (or should I say, manufactured) by a bunch of aging second string hipsters with greying ponytails who couldn't usher in their own garbage tin from the street much less a new pop scene. In addition, they weren't even from Manchester, where you had to be from, to usher in the MADchester scene. Get it? The Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses were the real proginators of the Madchester scene.
5-0 out of 5 stars Flawless
This is a flawless record. Everything is perfect. Not one song is bad.
