5-0 out of 5 stars One indestructible CD!!!
Dear World,
5-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre My Ass
The Stone Roses eponymous first album deserved all the accolades it got (and still gets). One of my all time favorites. Superlative. Sublime.Alright, already.
4-0 out of 5 stars Five years after perfection
After a five-year wait due to legal battles with their record company, the Stone Roses finally followed up on their transcendent debut, and released the pretentiously titled "Second Coming" (an unsurprising title after naming a song on their debut "I am the Resurrection").Was it as good as their first?Clearly not.Was it worth the wait?Well, sort of.

This music tames the penned up violence in my soul, the rage against injustice.It...touches me.Really.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obscure, Original and Classic
It is still hard to believe this album was made and released in the early mid 1980's.It is so completely against the grain of the stereotypes of that time in that decade. So, as a result, when this was printed by then indie label 4AD, it became a startlingly original and instant classic album of a certain niche in underground culture.
5-0 out of 5 stars #2 of the"coils" trilogy,you can`t live without.
The second in the series of "This Mortal Coil"is much longer and Dominic Appleton of "Breathless"another unique band worth checking out, has offered up his vocal skills along with Alison Limeric, a vibrant wonderful singer,as well as the sisters Diedre and Loise Rutowski who`sharmonies rival the wilson sisters of the band "Heart".The first song "The Jewler" sung by Appleton is a sweet melancholy story and there are also some other storyteller type songs."My father" a Judy Collins song, Covered by Alison Limeric is extremly well done and as beautiful as songs get. Limerics voice sores to great hights and plumets to low visa versa, versa visa.I often have to repeat it because one listen is`nt enough."The strength of Strings" is a rather unique song but is a treat to hear and I must say at first I didn`t know it was Appleton on the vocal because I had never heard him sing in the range he`s using, meanwhile instrumental soundscapes run through it connecting it all together, same as the first but more experimental, dramitic and complicated venturing toward the tribal beat.If you liked the first then you will like this. If you are not familiar with any of them, but enjoy ecletic music then this is for you too. It`s one of those cd`s that you can put on whilst enjoyinga quite evening to your selfe.Enjoy ... Read more

Editorial Review

Maintaining a unique sensibility for pop hooks and lyrical charms, Ned's Atomic Dustbin create British pop sounds that are instantly recognizable in their headshaking catchiness. Forged with standard rock instruments, the Ned's sound is even more salient because of the dual bass guitar lineup which provides jolting cross-melodies like no other. A constant barrage of dirty guitar scratches across the surface with flange and wah-wah providing spongy effects. In between the rapid movements, themes of post-adolescent angst come off brilliantly with the shrewdly idiosyncratic lyrics of singer John Penny. With a little help from the "Madchester" scene, they enlivened the steps of listeners further beyond the realm of the typical shoegazers of the time. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Discovery
Even the "B side" material on this CD is mostly top-notch early 90s alt rock. This album is just bursting all over with manic psychedelic energy--in some ways quite similar to Bob Mould's early 90s band, Sugar, yet with its own unique flavor. Ned's is not as famous as some of the other punk-influenced bands of the era, but this CD is worth listening to many times over.

4-0 out of 5 stars The first of Ned's distinctive three albums
Sounding almost like a more melodic version of speed metal, with a distinctive, early 90's, British pop sound, Ned's Atomic Dustbin made music which was quite unique and consistent in its superior quality. However, I think the reason that they only lasted for three albums, is that the sound never really changed, and became quite repetitive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pure pop rock
I bought this the same day I bought Nevermind by Nirvana, and to this day this album ranks higher on my list of favorites.Maybe it's because I was just a kid when I first heard this, but it sounds so vibrant and original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cause you're missing me like I'm missing you...
Eddy/Erin Moran's music is simultaneously warm and edgy. Her lyrics melt into a fusion of city dreams and melancholy wishes. Tears all over Town introduces you to a mood of loss and longing which is perfect for entering into the poetic contemplations in Kathleen which is melodious and warm, capturing your emotions, holding them for seconds and then releasing you into the rest of the moody moments.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Marvelous.
Erin Morans "A Girl called Eddy" album is simply wonderful. Something very heartfelt and warm to listen to. It's good to hear an artist really pour themselves out into the words as they sing.

Nothing prepared fans for quite such a return to form from Paul Weller. The mood was autobiographical, most notably on "Has My Fire Really Gone Out" and on the title track--both of which dealt with the writer's block that plagued Weller after the Style Council. And yet Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure class!!!!
Very simple, this is one of the best albums ever recorded and shows the full range of weller's vocals that surpasses anything. I never get tired of it as it always manages to take me away from wherever I am and in my book is faultless.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, The Fire HAS Gone Out
All sane people agree that The Jam was huge on so many levels. I don't care what anyone else says, The Style Council was Weller's creative apex (most people don't appreciate truly good food either). Wildwood is perhaps the best of Weller's solo material but c'mon, it's a shell of his former brilliance. So much of it is generic and forgettable. I saw him live in LA this summer and it was fine, but the creative well of new material is dry.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "ModFather" Strikes Gold!
Well, let me start by saying that this is going to be a very biased review, considering the fact that I believe Paul Weller to be one of the coolest individuals to ever live. And I adore most of his music (the reason I didn't say "all" can be summed up in two words: Style Council). But he really launched into the stratosphere with this album. I can honestly find no fault with this wonderful CD. It's all there. If you want to rock out, listen to "Sunflower" or "Fifth Season". If you want to relax, try "All The Pictures on the Wall" or "Moon on Your Pyjamas". And if you're an acoustic fan, "Foot of the Mountain" is your song. Needless to say there's a lot more, but the only way you can find out is to pick up a copy of your own. Do so immediately!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars dark, threatening, controversial...not punk
Black & White is the masterpiece of The Stranglers, a band which showcased a very aggressive sound (especially the bass of J.J.Burnel) with Doorsian influences (the keyboards), dark themes and very politically un-correct opinions in their lyrics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Virtuoso musicianship... on a punk album!
I love this album; I consider it the best punk album ever recorded.Despite my love for this album, I've never checked out any of the other Stranglers albums... perhaps I'm afraid I'd be disappointed when comparing them to this masterpiece. 5-0 out of 5 stars Elastica!...
Definitely one of their best work! All the song on this album are totally catchy with a great rock beat!...

3-0 out of 5 stars Perfectly good 90s music
As has been noted in nearly every published review of this CD, and as even a superficial listen to it bears out, Elastica was influenced by Wire.To complain about this, however, is like complaining that The Rolling Stones were influenced by Chuck Berry, that Interpol were influenced by Joy Division, or that REM were influenced by The Velvet Underground, The Byrds, and Big Star.Music is a continuum, an evolving dialog with listeners. That Elastica use Wire as a starting point is perfectly fine with me!Our heroine's troubles with heroin meant that her muse was killed as quickly as it came, but she left behind a very nice monument to the sounds of agitated punk girl group rock - circa mid 1990s (now a decade old). No, it's not groundbreaking or original, but it is good.If any of the foregoing review interests you, check this CD out.If not, you'll survive if you pass it by.

1-0 out of 5 stars This band desperately wants to be Wire.
Yeah, they had some catchy songs and got substantial radio and television play, but I just can't bring myself to like Elastica.

Blur's debut album, this CD features none of the quirky songwriting and social observation of British life that would earn singer Damon Albarn rave reviews, comparing him to the Kinks' Ray Davies and the Who's Pete Townshend. However, as a debut Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two ridiculously infectious reasons...
Ignore all the hype and mis/preconceptions about Blur's early work and buy this album for two excellent reasons: "She's So High", a wonderfully addictive slice of guitar-driven, echo-laden atmosphere, and "There's No Other Way", an amazing mix of choppy, syncopated beats overlaid with perfect Syd Barrett vocals that's, without question, the most exciting track to come out of the whole "Britpop" era. Like the Stone Roses at their peak, both are infused with the infectious enthusiasm of the "60s" transformed into something that's so much better. Brilliant...

4-0 out of 5 stars Blurs starts with a strong foot forward
Blur's debut back in 1991 brought along a blend of psychedelic rock and heavy guitars not too far from the sound of The Stone Roses or The Smiths. Though not too welcome by critics, as beingtoo much like shoegazing (a musical trend that was on its way out), in recording "Leisure", along with Charlatan's U.K. and a handful of other bands, they led the way of a new British invasion (labeled Britpop) that would last for many years.
4-0 out of 5 stars A blissful album of idiot glee
Yeah its true folks the Amazon reviewer was absolutely correct in that the lyrics are simply something to hang the pretty melodies on and the music is nowhere near as sophisticated as Blur would later write, but... and its a big but. Blur never again made an album this unabashedly joyful and ecstatic again. Mix great melodies, dumb dumb simple but very singable lyrics, lovely vocal harmonies strapped on top of a driving guitar with compelling and dancable rhythms and you have this rolling explosion of brit-pop bliss. Sometimes an album doesn't have to mean anything to be good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to a great band
Singles Going Steady is a great compilation of songs that span the most important years of this band's career. There are a ton of solid songs on this CD (24), which, when bought used, makes it a steal. This is a major staple worth jamming into your music library. It's also a great introduction to Buzzcocks music if you've never heard much of their stuff before. You can really hear the influence these guys have had on younger bands that try to copy the punk/post-punk sound. But of course, Buzzcocks do it better every time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Improve on perfection?
It would be hard to give "Singles Going Steady" anything less than 5 stars, ever.In any context.
4-0 out of 5 stars Modified perfection
The US version of "Singles Going Steady" is my all-time favorite album, and all the tracks on the US version are included here (the 16 non-bonus tracks). The eight original A-sides are pure punk pop perfection, proving our lovelorn hero Pete Shelley was the most talented songwriter of the punk generation. The Buzzcocks had three winning aspects to all of their singles: (1) bright, bristling energy, delivered at a 100 mph pace courtesy of virtuoso drummer John Maher; (2) killer hooks from the twin guitar attack of Shelley and Steve Diggle; (3) sensitivity and sincerity to their lyrics. No other punk band can really claim to beat the Buzzcocks at any one of these three keys to success.I mean, just try and picture Johnny Rotten singing, "So why would I cry if you ever left me?/Maybe 'cause you're all I'm living for", with Sid Vicious providing beautiful harmonies in the background.Well, that's precisely what Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle did, without ever sounding remotely whimpy. It's hard to pick highlights, but the well-recognized classics "What Do I Get?" ("I only get sleepless niiiights!") and "Ever Fallen in Love?" ("...with someone you shouldn't've fallen in love with") will serve nicely, as will the more obscure gems "I Don't Mind" and the ferocious "Harmony in My Head", the only song Steve Diggle gets to sing on (aside from bonus tracks).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blur's best album by some distance
I can't think of another album quite like this. Great mix of relatively straight Britpop and experimental soundscapes, and some stuff that just defies classification. Not a bad track in the bunch. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blur's best
IMO, this is Blur's best. The band was unique in that each subsequent album was not only more "progressive," but also very different. Not many bands pull this off, but Blur did. It seems to me that 13 was the band's peak. The songs range from the choir-laden Tender to the Arabesque, hair-bandish Swamp Song. There's only one song I'm not fond of, Caramel, which just kind of drags on. All the rest are great. My favorites are Tender, Bugman, 1992 (Portishead-ish), Mellow Song (Radiohead-ish), and Trimm Trabb. Man, do I love Trimm Trabb! And I think the album's songs all fit together very nicely, a la Sgt. Peppers and American Idiot, where they all pretty much need to be there for it to make sense. After 13, I think Blur's Think Tank was disjointed and a bit indifferent - a few nice tunes, but no 13. You can hear Gorillaz being born in 13, I think. This is one of favorite albums. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great songs, inferior set list
Ask any Cocteau Twin to choose 18 songs for a compilation, and you're likely to get a different response each time.Still, Stars and Topsoil leaves out too many first-rate songs to be considered truly representative collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars Escape to a beautiful place
I cant say anything bad about Elizabeth Fraser. Her voice makes me melt and she takes me where I want to go.The guitarists Will and Robin work in perfect harmony with liz providing a perfect sureal soundscape. Pure bliss.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Pink Orange Red" worth the price alone
I'll be brief - The Cocteau Twins have made some of the most heavenly, lush, etheral, otherworldly music I've ever heard. The atmospheres they create are so palpable you can almost step into them. For years, my personal favorite CT song was "Pink Orange Red," originally on the TINY DYNAMINE ep. Alas, I became permanently seperated from my old vinyl collection from the 80s (long story) and couldn't get this song for ages. So when STARS AND TOPSOIL came out and I saw "Pink Orange Red" on it, I snatched it up in a heartbeat.

Stereophonics have evolved remarkably since they were a Welsh covers band who once prided themselves on the authenticity of their Jimi Hendrix set. Though that 1960s influence is muted on the follow-up to their million-selling debut, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album
This, the Stereophonics 2nd album, is leaps and bounds beyond its predecessor, Word Gets Around, in terms of production, songwriting, and performance. From the brutal opener of Roll Up and Shine to the storming rockers like The Bartender and The Thief, Half of the Lies You Tell Ain't True, and T-Shirt Sun Tan, to the pretty She Takes Her Clothes Off, I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio, and Plastic California, this album is rock-solid (pun intended!).The closer is a little long-winded and repetitive, and there are some limp ballads (Just Looking, Hurry Up and Wait) but overall, this is a solid album!

2-0 out of 5 stars hit and miss...mostly miss
if you can get past the grating voice of the lead singer, you might find this album mildly enjoyable. The record is very schizophrenic and doesn't really put a stamp on what it's trying to do. The band is at their best when they ease off the pedal and put some rythum into their music. There are three great songs on this album - Hurry Up and Wait, A Minute Longer and I Stopped to Fill My Car Up - that exemplify the band's strength. But anytime they try and reach beyond their capabilities, the music falls apart. Having said that, the 3 great songs, along with 4 or 5 more decent ones, are worth the money. It's not the greatest album in the world, but it's not bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars American Perspective
Grunge is just a memory now as the American masses go after Kid Rock. But bands like Stereophonics have been doing the great old punk/metal thing for a few years, and this new record was actually up for this year's Mercury Prize. Songs like "The Bartender and The Thief" and "T-shirt Sun Tan" are classic songs to get excited about. Also they are big on ballads, that show a softer side to the power trio from Wales. I saw them recently live, and they are entertaining, with singer Kelly Jones' head to the side approach, and the drummer Stuart Cable had as much energy as Keith Moon. Finally here's a band who can take the mantel from Oasis and Nirvana. A record for those who want to rock out!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Live Album
Live at Dakota is a 2CD live album by Stereophonics culled from their Language.Sex.Violence.Other? tour.Just like everything else by this Welsh rock band, it's solid, sometimes spectacular, and enjoyable, but nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary. All of the cuts on here sound really good in a live setting, although I prefer the studio version of Maybe Tomorrow much more than this live reworking.Jayne is a newer unreleased song that is pretty good, and Carrot Cake and Wine is an older b-side that sounds like a rewrite of a song from their first album they play earlier on this set with just new lyrics (I'll let you figure out which song I'm alluding to).Still, overall, an enjoyable live set, and for 2 CDs and 20 songs, you can't beat the price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
If you love the Stereophonics and if you love live music, then this is the album you've been waiting for.I bought it the day it came out and I haven't listened to anything else since. The whole thing, both discs, are great. They may have done a better job mixing the album, but it's a great live performance.I love Language, Sex, Violence, Other?, and this live album showcases the other.Great renditions of Dakota, Superman, and Devil are included here. But the best of the band comes out on their earlier stuff.A Thousand Trees blows the roof out of the stadium and the crowd just goes wild.I also really enjoyed their b-side Carrot Cake and Wine and their new song Jayne. But if I had to pick a highlight, it would be the stellar acoustic version of Maybe Tomorrow. All in all, Magnificent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Stereophonics finally release long-overdue live album
Stereophonics were one of the more exciting bands in the late 90s coming out of the UK. The Welsh trio brought brash rock with a swagger, and I loved it. After peaking with the 1999 "Performance and Coctails" album, things slowly but surely started going downhill, and I did not like last year's "Language" album whatsoever. Now, on the 10th anniversary of the band, they finally release a live album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Could've been amazing
I don't give it five stars only because Constellation Of The Heart, Why Should I Love You and You're The One are inexcusable pieces of garbage that i don't know why she allowed them to be in the final cut of the album! The rest of the songs are good, others are brilliant, but she had a wonderful conceptual idea explained in the title song The Red Shoes and didn't do much to make it interesting. We all know she was going through hell at the time, but it usually helps to make great, stirring, mindblowing records! Still, it becomes better with each listening (except the ones i mentioned).

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Red Shoes
Of all the Kate Bush albums I currently own, this is my favorite.Rubberband Girl is a fantastic tribute to trying to be adaptable to life and changes which most of us don't do well and Kate apparently would like to do a better job of as well.My next favourite on this album is Eat the Music, with it's fantastic back up and endearing lyrics that encourage you to swallow your music just like the fruit of life it truly is.My biggest disappointment on this album is Big Stripey Lie, but is truly a Kate song as it discusses the way a lie weaves in and out of reality.Personally, I am not fond of the music with Big Stripey Lie, but others may love it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Her only disappointing release
I am so accustomed to raving about Kate Bush's recordings that it really pains me to write this one. This CD, while not horrible, is very disappointing. It seems she got sick of making interesting, quirky music and decided to just make some money with this one. It is very commercial, ridiculously over-produced and just could not have come from her heart. If you are a fan, you already own this. If you are looking for an introduction to Kate's music, buy "Hounds of Love". That CD is her masterpiece; "Red Shoes" should be veiwed as an asterisk in her amazing career. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm gonna try not to be biased here... aww, screw it!
HOLY SMOKES this is a good record. This is probably the most underrated thing I have ever heard in my entire life. And I'm not just saying that because I hail from Northern Ireland, where the Fingers are from. No, when people begin their collection of punk albums, along with Never Mind The Bollocks and the Clash and what have you, this is a must have. If you like the Sex Pistols, Anti-Flag, The Clash or The Unseen, you will love this because it sounds like a mix of them all. The only way I can think to describe Jake Burns's voice is that it sounds like he's been gargling barbed wire.

3-0 out of 5 stars Actually about 1 or 2 memories
Nowhere near as memorable or effective as some of there better stuff, this mostly mechanical effort offers half baked pop concoctions, mostly of the annoying, catchy, pseudo-eclectic variety, as if any subtlety whatsoever has been lost on the band in favor of a straight and narrow, approach. While the band was never shy of talent for catchy songs, most of these 12 memories fade rather quick from underdevelopment. Thankfully we are seldom reminded of a more relaxed, assured band, a far cry from the tacky, lazy upbeat majority of this disc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Breakup Album!
Quintessential Travis.Soulful lyrics, heartbreaking melodies, lovely narratives, also lots of references to losing lovers but not in a depressing way. Also, the twelfth memory is a hidden track!Great album when you're in the mood to reminise about past loves without the urge to jump out of a window.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their Best Yet...
For what is a highly political record,Travis come out on top with "12 memories".The opening tracks standout as having a certain chart-appeal,both "quicksand" and "the beautiful occupation" give a nod to the sound of late beatles. As does the single "re-offender"although this is a dark tale of domestic violence."Peace the f**k out" is reminicent of a Lennon political tune.It sounds as if the great man himself wrote it...and it seems to have the same influence on the mind."How many hearts" is yet another beatlesque song, but thats expected with a brit-rock band."Paperclips" slows things down and "somewhere else" sounds like a sure-fire hit single...with catchy hooks and lyrics, yet another song that reminds us of the original fab 4.The album continues with "love will come through" and "mid-life krysis" telling their own tales. Then my personal favourite "happy to hang around",yet another catchy tune and the beautiful sound of a band full of confidence. The album ends with "walking down the hill" and a hidden track "some sad song" both are kind of meloncholy but good songs nonetheless. This album,i believe,is travis' best yet,its full of good pop tunes about love and the pressures of life.A fantastic record ! ...
