4-0 out of 5 stars Snapshot of Seattle Times
Listening to the "Singles" Soundtrack is liking listening to a launching pad.Cameron Crow, he of much music fandom, directed the Singles flick at just the right time to help propel the Seattle grunge sound to a much larger audience. It's what happens when a seemingly alternative movement gets popularized...which is not a bad thing.Does a mass audience change the dynamics and quality of the music?I think not.Pearl Jam Ten is every bit as good as Pearl Jam No Code, so just because grunge got popularized through the success of Nirvana, PJ, Alice, doesn't knock the power of the music and the quality of the movement.
5-0 out of 5 stars Could be the best soundtrack of all time
Soundtracks never meant a lot to me. In fact, prior to buying this, I had never even taken the time to listen to one completely because I would get so frustrated with the choices so early in the CD. When my interest in 90s grunge was peaking is when I found the Singles soundtrack. My obsession with grunge has since diminished a tad bit but I still find myself listening to this all the time even though I've had it for a long time. From Alice In Chains' dark anthem Would? to The Lovemongers very good take on the Zeppelin classic Battle Of Evermore, I'm hardpressed to think of a soundtrack that delivers like this one does.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, Dave Grohl!
I disagree with the fact that this is the first "real" Foo Fighters album.Their self-titled debut was, despite the fact that Grohl played all the instruments. If you want to say this is the first album made by more than just Grohl, you can.But with all of their lineup changes, FF really began and probably will end with Dave Grohl.
4-0 out of 5 stars Foo's Colour and Shape
THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE is an example of how a record brings a rock band into the public spotlight, but is not cosidered to be a breakthrough. This album is a great piece of work, because it displays progression of Foo Fighters' sound before they hit it big. Tracks from this album brought the band millions of listners, but the actual record was not thought to be good enough to promote internationally. Those tracks however, would later lead Foo Fighters to their fame. With Grohl originally from Nirvana, this band would would definately have an awesome sense of time, rhythm, and sound. And they do; Foo Fighters perform well together, keep a steady pulse, and use dynamics to their perfection. This record is mostly a light rock sound, but there are times where there is a good head banger quality present. This album is also some of Foo Fighters best work and rightfully so. Once heard, there's no denying it. With rock classics thrown deep within this record, THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE is a most have for any rock fan.

This CD has several good songs on it but the majority of songs on it, in my opinion, are not great. I WOULD RECOMMEND buying this CD IF you like Blink-182, and you don't mind buying a CD with some songs that aren't great.

5-0 out of 5 stars If this album doesn't win a Grammy, there just ain't no justice in the universe.
It's difficult for me to describe how great this album is because I just don't know where to start.Maybe here: there isn't a track on this CD that you're going to want to skip over, even after repeated listenings (and while comparisons of James Hand to Hank Williams Sr. seem natural, as great as he was, ol' Hank had a few tracks that got on your nerves).
5-0 out of 5 stars original material with a traditional western and honkytonk sound.
first rate singer/songwriter in the cowboy/honkytonk traditional sound genre.accompaning musicians and arrangements are perfect. proves there ie hope for 50+ boomer musicians who have never had a commercial release before. i heard him initially on NPR in an interview and suggest you check out that program.

Man, I'm floored by the poor reviews of this disc.Listen, his mid-career stuff i.e. "Bring the Family", "Stolen Moments" etc. is phenomenal; but he has not lost one bit of touch or creativity with his last couple discs. While "Beneath This Gruff Exterior" was a top shelf punch in the chops from John, "Master" is a laid back and beautifully written piece of work.I'm a HUGE Hiatt fan, and arguabally each of his discs have one or two clunkers- this disc is no exception to that rule. But you also have a few could-be classics-The title track, "Howlin' down the Cumberland", "Find you at Last"....and a couple that are just hysterical-"Wintertime Blues" and "Back on the corner".LOVED IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another 90s Classic.
Despite what others say this is a really good release from a pretty good band. Sure, Bush may have tried to emulate Nirvana but does that really take anything away from the music. As far as I'm concerned if the songs are well written and sound good it shouldn't matter if they share similarities in sound with another band. Originality should not be the main factor like in some of the reviews I've seen. Bush is a good band with great songs. Anyway, this cd is right up in the top 25 of my 100+ cd collection I own. Pretty much every track is excellent. My favorites are "Everything Zen", "Swim", "Little Things", and "Testosterone". Here's the track ratings for everything...
4-0 out of 5 stars Why all the hate?
I wasn't really aware that people didn't like Bush.As far as I knew they were loved by all, but then I read some of the reviews here and was floored.I've always been a fan of Bush ever since hearing 'Mouth' and I feel I'll always have a special place for them in my heart.Their debut album, while yes it compares to Nirvana in a way, isn't the clone everyone tries to make it.First off, Gavin and Curt sound NOTHING alike. The music is simular but that's what was big at the time.Just because one band somewhat 'invents' grundge doesn't mean that everyone else is a clone. It's a type of music that evolves with time, and Bush NOT Nirvana has pushed it's evolution (that's mostly because Nirvana is no more). This album itself is reportedly all about sex, every track, and once hearing that then songs like 'Comedown' and 'Little Things' take new meaning.Personally I think we all knew what 'Machinehead' was about...'Swim' and 'Bomb' are my two favorite tracks here, perfectly exicuted, as is the majority of this album. And who can forget the powerfull and moving piece called 'Glycerine'?The writter for Amazon said that Gavin lacks in the lyrics department but I disagree...he shines on quite a few songs here, 'Glycerine' being one of them, and paints a picture we can all see. While I feel that 'Razorblade Suitcase' is a superior album, 'Sixteen Stone' still deserves respect for being the start of one of the greatest bands around.

1-0 out of 5 stars 2.8/10.0
I can't fathom why anyone would enjoy this album. The lyrics must have come out of a Dadaist poetry circle, and (most of) the guitar work is completely without personality.

Sometimes it seems as if there's every other band in America, and thenthere's the Flaming Lips. The Norman, Oklahoma, quartet makes modern rock thatdoesn't sound like anyone else; head music, they'd have called it inpsychedelia's heyday, weird soundscapes that conjure the bizarre alternateuniverse on the other side of the funhouse mirror. 5-0 out of 5 stars one of the most significant releases of the 90s (really!!!)
in coming up with a value judgement on this record i have tried to steer clear of comparisons to any of the lips' other output, and view it in a sort of cultural freeze frame taking into consideration things like the grunge rock i still can't get enough of, the popular television programming and the overall atmosphere of the clinton 90s. what i came up with was that this record, probably more than any other, embodies the overwhelming sense of relief and newfound optimism that happened with the new administration and the "end" of the cold war. i may have said in other reviews that the clinton 90s are a time more distant from us at the present than even the cold war 70s and 80s...it was a wonderful era where a man was free to stick a needle in his arm and sing a jobim bossa nova over guitar feedback if he so chose and not worry about a draft or nuclear threats, etc. Wayne and company have the same ethic as the above-mentioned band and on this record they created something which i consider to be locked in a tie for the best radio-type song representative of the clinton era: she don't use jelly, of course, with the other standout (in my mind, at least) being interstate love song. the entire album features the crisp sound and elastic bass and guitar fuzztones which made the single famous, and it stands in sharp contrast to the flood of grunge releases from those couple of years because of the sonic clarity and cheerful vibe, and, to my ears (even as a dyed-in-the-wool, flannel-wearing ed vedder fanboy), it pretty much trumps all of them in terms of pure inspiration and consistency. now, to be fair, the lips are not my favorite band, nor is stp (that honor i reserve for crusty old mark lanegan and the screaming trees on sst). this is not my favorite lips album either (that would be yoshimi)...she don't use jelly is not even my favorite song on the record (i like chewin the apple of your eye for its unique chord progression and sparse acoustic guitar work...it is the only real break from the veritable deluge of fuzz); all i am saying is that this album is an extremely significant expression of the time period in which it was recorded and as such it has monumental value which is pretty much undeniable regardless of one's personal preferences.

5-0 out of 5 stars The second Flaming Lips masterpiece
I dont understand how one reviewer said this record is weak musically, Ronald Jones and Steven Drozd are very talented musicians. Not to mention Wayne Coyne's songwriting. "Moth in the Incubator" among others are classics. Production is perfect, the drum sound is loud and fat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars wilco songs come to life
If you are a fan of Wilco, and especially if you have never seen them live then you must own this cd! With a set list based largely on "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "A Ghost is Born," you might not think of buying this. YHF is a love-or-hate album, and maybe not the best intro to this band since it's more experimental than their previous work. But the songs really come alive and take on a new dimension when they are played live. Wilco is a really tight band. I had always loved them but when I saw them live for the first time (twice in the same week in New Orleans on the Ghost tour,) I was blown away. The first few times I heard Ghost, it fell a little flat, maybe because I had anticipated it so much and it didn't seem to have quite the same edge as YHF. But hearing the Ghost songs live has really changed my opinion and now I love that record equally, if not more than the other Wilco records. Certain songs really jump out as my favorites here: "Misunderstood," "Via Chicago," (a song they have played countless times but this version really grabs me...) and surprisingly "Company in My Back" and "Hell is Chrome," 2 songs I hadn't thought much of before. I'm going to see Wilco again very soon, thankfully they are on tour again! If you can't catch a show, check out this record, it will give you an idea of why their live shows are so acclaimed.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this band
This is a great live cd which showcases the amazing talent of the band.
5-0 out of 5 stars As good as being there
This album clearly defines why Wilco is the best band touring today or any day. The connection that Tweedy makes with the audience is crystal clear, as is the harmonious instrumentation that this current line-up display. Each musician in the band is a virtuoso in his own right, and Nels Cline sharp guitar is a welcome addition indeed. I usually don't like live albums, as the audience noise is a distraction, but it is clear on this recording that the audiecne was too much in awe to get in the way. ... Read more

After seeing Bullet in a Bible on FUSE, I knew that I needed to get this CD/DVD. Some may disagree with Samuel Bayer's choice in camera changes during the movie but I personally didn't find any problem with it. It sort of captures the spirit of the band itself, coming at you from many directions and you never know what's going to happen next. Green Day is AWESOME in concert and this DVD is evidence of it. From Billie Joe's crazy antics in St. Jimmy to his heroic and heartfelt performance of Wake Me Up When September Ends, Green Day shows it's versatility as a band and their highly polished skills as musicians/entertainers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Green DayBullet In A Bible(Live Album)
This is a great album 14 songs 65:36. All of the songs are live for one thing. Green Day makes realy good LIVE albums. I realy like the part where they introduces a band named Green Day at the end of Brain Stew or Basket Case. But otherwise it is realy great, especilly if you are a true Green Day fan. Whats great about it is you get alot of the new songs but you also get some of the songs from older albums like Nimrod, Warning, Shanegins, and Isonomic.

Few bands are better suited than the Barenaked Ladies to take obnoxious old Christmas jingles to an entirely new level of obnoxiousness. The Canadian pop group does a smack-up job on this generous collection, where they tackle children's relics like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," curious seasonal fare such as Band-Aid's Ethiopian charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas," and a handful of tongue-in-cheek originals that share the bookish humor of the band's hits like "One Week" and "Brian Wilson." Even the inclusion of three Hannukah songs doesn't raise the bar for reverence. The disc also includes collaborations with Sarah McLachlan and Michael Buble. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Doolittle or Daydream Nation?
Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth is an album that showed us that being an indie band with a punk edge and a pleasure for distortion can be helpful. The lyrics of this album are essential to this album because at times they seem innocent and unfamiliar and at other time they seem sinful and deviant. The album is beguiled with strange chords and pulsating drums. Thurston Moore provides the somber voice in some songs and then a screeching scream in others. Kim Gordon provides seduction of noise and her voice filled with lust draws you in. The album is evil and merciful at the same time and will always stand as one of the best of the 80's joining the ranks with "Doolittle" and "Remain in Light".

This album is one of the best sonic youth album...I advise everyone to listen this album...Break the circle of common popular music...This album irritates your soul and freedback your dreams...

3-0 out of 5 stars A Very Tough Listen
In truth, I think Sonic Youth are massively overrated in indie circles, but this album does have some good stuff on it. The first four tracks are the highpoint of the album, "'Cross The Breeze" in particular is thrilling and unquestionably the best track on here. After that, things are a little more mixed, with a fair bit of what I would call "filler." The main problem with this album is it's tonal repetitiveness and it's sheer length. This is a seriously difficult album to take all in one sitting, in fact I can't listen to the album the whole way through, it just doesn't hold my interest. Overall, it's compelling at times but I wouldn't call it any kind of masterpiece. New listeners are better off starting with Goo, Dirty or even Murray Street. None of those have a song as great as "'Cross The Breeze" but they provide more rewards for the casual listener. ... Read more

Artists like Iris DeMent aren't supposed to exist anymore in this cynical world. Singing unironically about family, forgiveness, and other real-life mysteries, DeMent is accompanied on this great debut by little more than acoustic guitar, upright bass, piano, and an occasional fiddle. But the songs (especially the bittersweet "Our Town" and the grand dreams of "Mama's Opry") are more than smart and honest enough to bear standing so naked. And her singing--highlighting a sweet Ozark twang--is that rarest of gifts: a wise, friendly voice that can break your heart even as it's making it swell with a reason to love again.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Authentic Rural American Music
This music reminds me of all the generations of women and girls in the big kitchen at the dairy farm where I worked summers as a kid. They'd all be in there with fans running and steam coming out of huge pans boiling noodles and potatoes and greens, pans frying chicken and pork chops, cutting up stuff out of the garden, getting ready for the big dinner, which, of course, isthe noon meal. We'd come in all sweaty and "worsh up" before everybody'd sit down for a prayer and this enormous meal that, at that time and place with all the folks together, was the only kind of affluence and conspicuous consumption that mattered and that anybody needed. Iris sings it.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent album
I really enjoyed this album. I heard it at a friend's house and immediately thought I would like to own a copy. Iris Dement has a distinct and unusual vocal style and the whole album is very mellow and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'INFAMOUS ANGEL' - ESSENTIAL COUNTRY
Every so often I hear a CD that makes me sit back in awe - and listening to 'Infamous Angel' was one of those occasions. Iris Dement has a voice that is so Country but so unlike the usual andher songwriting is brilliantly simple but astute. Her music is a mix of folk, bluegrass, gospel & honkytonk and here she's backed by a top band that includes Emmylou Harris, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Al Perkins, Roy Huskey Jr. & Jim Rooney. Standout tracks: 'Let The Mystery Be', 'These Hills', 'Hotter Than Mojave..', 'Our Town', 'Mama's Opry', and the wonderful title track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Road music to die for
This is one incredible album and should always be played while driving long distances in West Texas or anywhere else.Toe-tapping, dreaming, Get High music --- THANK YOU LORD for Lyle Lovett!!J from Texas

5-0 out of 5 stars Lyle continues to follow his own path
The combination of traditional country with whatever strikes Mr. Lovett's fancy continues here on THE ROAD TO ENSENADA. This CD starts with a typical touch of humor with the man showing his attachment to his Stetson ("Don't Touch my Hat"), working up an incredible series of country fried pick up lines ("Her First Mistake") and chasing after a young lady who can "Look right through you." ("Fiona") Listen to the throwback sound of the peddle steel and fiddle blending in with the big band horns on "That's Right" and you know right away your in Lyle Lovett territory. Things get serious as the CD moves along, particularly on the brilliant "Promises," where "words are like poison," and on the bittersweet "Christmas Morning." By the time you finish listening to the epic title track, you will realize Lovett has created another wonderful collection songs for the heart and mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Alt-Country at its finest
Although Lyle Lovett's most recent CD is quite good, No collection of Alt-Country music should be without THE ROAD TO ENSENADA. This CD is both elegant and self depricating, big and brassy, and closae adn intimate. Every song is good, and every song speaks to you from the heart AND the brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album!
Like most people, I discovered Marty on Rock Star: INXS.
3-0 out of 5 stars WAY Overproduced
Don't get me wrong - I love the Lovehammers. They are awesome in concert and thier previous albums (and DVD) all rock! That is why I was so disappointed when I popped this CD into the player in my car. This is a pop CD, not a rock CD.Whoever produced this album should be fired - they added too many layers, toned down the music and singing, added all kinds of studio effects in, and somehow convinced the Lovehammers that it would sell. There is no way our local rock station would play anything off this album (except maybe Straight As An Arrow, and possibly Trees). If I hadn't seen them play after the album came out, I would have thought they had sold out. They still rocked in concert, so it looks like they just got screwed by Epic.If you want REAL Lovehammers, stick w/ Murder on My Mind or L'Strange.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD ... but buy the other ones, too!
I bought "Murder on My Mind" before Rockstar:INXS was over, and then got this CD as soon as it came out. Some of the songs overlap, but I don't care! I've been playing them (and "L'Strange") almost non-stop since I got them. There's something completely infectious about Marty and the Lovehammers, right from the first note. The songs are full steam ahead rock, with great hooks. You'll be singing along at the top of your lungs without even realizing it.

Editorial Review

John Hiatt has had such extraordinary success as a songwriter that, even if you haven't followed his career as a performer, you'll find you know most of these songs by virtue of their hit cover versions. Bonnie Raitt ("A Thing Called Love"), Suzy Bogguss ("Drive South"), Rosanne Cash ("The Way We Mend a Broken Heart"), Jeff Healey ("Angel Eyes"), and Aaron Neville ("Feels Like Rain") have all dipped into the Hiatt songbook with spectacular results. Hiatt's originals (plus a couple of new tracks) are terrific in their own right, thanks to his gritty vocal style and stellar accompaniment on some tracks by Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, Jim Keltner, and Sonny Landreth. The only missteps here are a rerecorded version of "Have a Little Faith in Me" (the original is one of Hiatt's most powerful performances) and the inclusion of "Take Off Your Uniform," a distant memory from Hiatt's days as a new waver in the Elvis Costello mold. 4-0 out of 5 stars Something for new fans and old
Let's just start by stating its a "Best of..." because (believe it or not) not enough people have bought his singles for him to make actual "Greatest Hits".If your in this category, buy it, your in for a treat. For those that already have everything he's ever done, I'll concentrate on this disc's value added, like how each song has a (real) short paragraph penned by Hiatt revealing the history/state of mind when it was written. And the new/reworked/first time released songs, like...

Editorial Review

Fans of Godsmack’s dark, swirling, commanding music will be delighted by the Boston band’s powerful third effort, which mixes arena rock in the vein of an Alice in Chains (in fact, Godsmack takes its name from an AIC song) with the aggression of Pantera. With new drummer Shannon Larkin (formerly of Amen), Godsmack stick with the riff-heavy, layered tunes and sharp, confident bridge-burning lyrics (witness the convincing vitriol of "I F@?king Hate You"). Highlights include Sully Erna’s gut-spewing scream on "Changes," the memorable chorus and commanding assured "I Stand Alone," and the radio-ready "Straight out of Line." The tribal drums and chanting of the instrumental "The Awakening" sets the stage for "Serenity," the final track, which brings Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Godsmack's Third Album
With their third release, Godsmack really shines, harder and better than ever before. A strong, radio-ready hit opens the album with "Straight Out of Line". Godsmack continues the energy rise with the next two tracks, "Faceless", and "Changes". And perhaps the most powerful song they've ever recorded comes into play at #5, "I Stand Alone", in my opinion, one of the best heavy rock songs ever recorded. They continue the awesome song trend with "Re-Align", a softer side where the lyrics absolutely shine. Next, a throwback to their debut with "I F*****g Hate You", an angry song that bristles with tension and malice. Another stand-out is "I Am", in which lead singer Sully Erna declares "death will come when i'm good and God d**n ready". And Godsmack does it again with the melodic, almost tribal "Serenity", where the chanting chorus can make your heart pump with intensity. Overall, this is their best record yet and an excellent purchase. This album apppeals to all rock fans who love quality music. An awesome album.

5-0 out of 5 stars the energy is there
I had overlooked this band for along time. I am now a fan. I love the energy they bring to their music, the agression, the power...I really don't get the comparison to Alice N Chains. They are one their own sound. Sully does have a very unique voice and the lyrics are dark but man they are awesome. I bought IV first. Now I plan to get their other CD's as well. This is truely worth buying.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good band to appreciate
godsmack is a great band with some classic songs such as Voodoo, and I stand alone, and serenity but anyways... this cd is full of what some people say out of tune guitars and dinosaur growling... thats godsmack for u, and if u cant handle it then dont bloody listen to it. This band is a great band to appreciate and i love the sound of them. Sully's Voice is awesome, so low and such i love it. The songs that shone on it are I Stand Alone, Faceless, Serenity, and others so whoever wants to diss them dont listen to it ... Read more
