Editorial Review

It might be tempting to describe Kentucky's Chris Knight as the poor man's Steve Earle (if the original weren't still doing a pretty good job at it). While the hard twang of the guitar and the hardscrabble lyrics recall Earle's early classic albums, Knight continues to establish himself on his fourth release as one of the most powerful (and underrecognized) artists in alternative country. Produced by Gary Nicholson and mixed by Earle's "twangtrust" partner Ray Kennedy, the album pulls no punches, whether rocking the roadhouse at the end of "River Road," venting anger at the developers who are treating Grandpa's land like "Dirt," or detailing a dead-end life in the title track. Yet the redemptive "Saved by Love" and the yearning "Too Close to Home" evoke equally strong emotions that balance the album's darker strains. If "Cry Lonely" isn't a hit for Knight, it deserves to be one for somebody. Knight's eye for detail and command of tone have the compression of great short stories, though Southern Gothic rarely rocks this hard. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wolf Outside Your Door
"Enough Rope" continues the excellent work of this excellent artist. The set opens with the hot rocker "Jack Blue" with Kenny Greenberg's electric guitar stinging; and Dan Dugmore's pedal steel crying plaintively, "You don't go looking for trouble.Ain't that what the old folks say?Don't go looking for trouble, it'll find you anyway."This is followed in a 1-2 punch with the aching slow song "Cry Lonely" with Chris' vocal ringing with longing & regret, "You always say your heart is breaking & you hear the wolf outside your door; But I know you're just using me 'til you don't need me anymore."The wolf image is reflected in Wayne Brezinka's cover design."Saved by Love" is another strong song that tugs on the heartstrings with Dan Dugmore's pedal steel aching.Dugmore is a longtime musical veteran from Linda Ronstadt & James Taylor's heyday to more recently Keith Urban & Lee Ann Womack. His touch throughout this set is masterful."Rural Route" is a sweet country throwback to a more gentle time, "I built a fire up on the hill; sat in the woods & drank my fill; Talked to God all night; Took another shot & set me right.""Dirt" oozes anger with Knight letting the fur fly in his ripping vocals, "Company came from out of state to build another stinking factory; Them county politicians think they know just exactly what we need; But I sit down by the highway. I hear those big Cats growl.Where the quail gonna fly?Where will the rabbits run now?""Up from the Hill" is another classic rocker with a churning guitar line that sounds like something from Day Tripper-era Beatles mixed in with backwoods pedal-to-the-metal rock, "2 a.m. in the morning, he done pissed off all his friends; He'll come knocking on Vessie's door; She's the only one let him in.""Bridle On a Bull" is another classic rocker that'd fit comfortably on a Johnny Cash record.Knight seems to continue the saga of "William" from his self-titled brilliant CD that appeared on Decca with "William's Son" with more on the guy raised without enough love."To Get Back Home" is another burning rocker with Chris' voice ripping through mounds of emotion. The set ends with the slower tempo of the title track as Chris looks at a life that has a lot of blessings and a lot of dreams that may never come true."Enough Rope" is a powerful CD.The musicianship is first-rate; and the set is paced well with a nod to the faster tempo.Chris Knight seems to embody the lonely guy persona, a man who wants to do the right thing but every now and then gets just a little ticked off. This CD has hugged my changer repeatedly.Bravo!

JUST AWESOME, EVERYTHING STEVE EARLE SHOULD HAVE BECOME AND MORE. NO SELL OUT OR CMT COMPROMISE HERE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chris Knight's "Tunnel Of Love"
I'm only going to write this review for the people you are already on board with Chris Knight.I wish mass commercial success would open up for Chris Knight because he deserves it.There are very few people who ever came down the pike that are in Chris Knight's league.I always thought that Chris was a country version of Bruce Springsteen. That being said this is his "Tunnel Of Love" album.A little softer, not as dark, dare I say a little pop here and there?Just when you think he has a song that might break on the radio you realize there was one line in the song that said "strung out like some junkie in a back alley".Oops! That won't fly on country radio. There are still several hard rockers on here that will blow you away in concert as much as anything he has ever done.If you haven't seen Chris Knight in concert, go to his web site and find a concert to go to.When your at the concert try at some point during the show get close enough that you can see his face. His passion and intensity will give you goosebumps. No theatrics.Honest, real, humble, and intense. ... A ghost, a band, a troubadour. Easily the strangest co-op project ever, and easily one of the finest and most evocative albums of the year. British socialist and folkie Billy Bragg was given unprecedented access to Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics. Teaming up with alt-country band Wilco and quoting from more than 50 years of country, folk, and rock music, Billy and company bring Guthrie's politics, poetry, and morality to the end of the century and prove he's as necessary now as ever. 4-0 out of 5 stars Woody Guthrie Lyrics to Billy Bragg Tunes
You'll find yourself singing along after the first listen. California Stars and Ain't Nobody that Can Sing like me are new favorites for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something to Bragg About, for Wilco ,too.
This is an example of the brilliance that results when two great talents join forces to write music and record the lyrics of American folk music icon, Woody Guthrie.Bragg and Tweedy collaborate seamlessly to set to music the words that Guthrie wrote over 50 years ago, and it still sounds fresh today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a reply to those reviewers who think that Guthrie "really wasn't all that left-wing" or that Bragg is, by comparison, too "didactic" or "rabidly left-wing" (as some would have it).The fact is that Bragg can't imagine being as politically radical as Guthrie was, not because Bragg is a closet liberal, but because Guthrie was a part of a radical movement in the United States the likes of which is simply not to be found in the U.S. or Britain nowadays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Song is Great
I love every Blue October song. They repeatedly impress me.I suggest, however, that you look at the "Argue With a Tree" album. Many of the songs on that album will repeat here (although in live format on the Argue with a Tree album).Their are some differences between that album and this album that make it worthwhile to have both, but some people may not want to pay to have a lot of songs repeated.Check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue October is amazing!
If you like their other stuff, you'll love this too, still a great variety of music styles, just a little more on the serious side as far as lyrics go, but still great to listen to over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Blooded
This is an all around good band with an individual sound. I'm not saying they sound like they've been locked in a box with no influences and they're going to revolutionize the industry, but they do rock out.If you ever get a chance to see them play live, do, because they're all about the music.music is easy to get your hands on but long term play music is another story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!!!!!!!!
What else could you expect from Alanis!!??
5-0 out of 5 stars Censorious Arrogance
Leaving a long, drawn-out 'essay' about the details of the album and/or criticism of said work is fruitless arrogance. Considering I, nor anyone who will leave their 'review', is worthy to defame or glamorize anything that we didn't take a part in creating. Therefore, the only feedback anyone outside Alanis' camp can give is simply whether he or she liked it or not.
5-0 out of 5 stars a must have for any collector of great music
alanis morrisette. Where do I start? She was all over the place in 1995 and 1996 with Jagged Little Pill. Then it got quiet for a bit and she came out of nowhere with Uninvited which was a beautiful piece, and then Thank You. And then she disappears after some time and comes back with hands clean and precious illusions and then next thing we know the long hair is gone and she's more sophisticated and mature and her music matured as well and evolved over the years. With her fabulous songwriting and unforgettable piano and guitar hooks, alanis is an artist you must have in your collection. So if you're broke like me and don't want to buy all her albums get this record it's full of her best work over the past 10 years ... Read more

I give this album five stars for the track underneath it all alone. I actually I had never heard of no doubt until a couple of years ago when I heard underneath it all playing on the the radio. Since then I've been all ears ever since.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just scrapes the surface but still excellent.
I got into No Doubt in 1995.
1-0 out of 5 stars Get Tragic Kingdom instead.
There are a couple of good songs on here. I love the song Sunday Morning. But then they went and put crappy songs like "Hey Baby" and "Hella Good" on it, and it just went to hell. Plus all of their most overrated songs, which I just am not a big fan of. No Doubt was awesome up until Return Of Saturn, and Gwen's solo career just sucks horribly. ... Read more

Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley teams with Seattle pals Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) and Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees) in the tradition of other part-time grunge aggregations like Brad and Hater. These 10 numbers--mostly somber, acoustic-hued ballads like the single "River of Deceit"--are a therapeutic soul-cleansing for the troubled Staley. Core fans of any of the aforementioned bands will rank this with the solo work of Screaming Tree frontman Mark Lanegan (a guest vocalist here). Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden gem
This album was really one of the better albums of the '90s and not a lot of people ever heard it.It is too bad they never made a follow-up record and, of course, too bad Layne past away. It's better than just "Layne Staley and Mike McCready's side band."They were a great band in their own right. There is also a Live VHS/DVD floating around out there; which is pretty good too.

Editorial Review

As the title of Gary Allan's sixth album suggests, there's no change of pace or lightening up on his darkest collection to date (and first since his wife's suicide). Love goes bad on the bittersweet "Best I Ever Had," gets brutal on "I Just Got Back from Hell," and turns positively lethal on "He Can't Quit Her." The closest Allan comes to an affirmative sentiment is the schmaltzy "Life Ain't Always Beautiful," though an extended guitar solo brings the rock balladry of "Putting My Misery on Display" to a soul-stirring finale. "Nickajack Cave" evokes the mythic redemption of Johnny Cash, but there's no redemption for Allan here. He sounds like he's trying so hard to convey life's hard lessons that the comparative understatement of "Puttin' Memories Away" comes as a relief. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough All Over - Gary Allan
Allan's latest outing is a neo-traditional masterpiece. There isn't a throwaway track on the entire album.Raw and powerful, Allan's songwriting and presentation really showcase the pain of loss but also the beauty of having loved.Allan is always a treat to listen to, especially with his unique, gritty vocals and the production of the music. The power of the raunchy yet traditional guitar and drum work invoke some of the greatest traditionalist country of the last decade which include Allan, Danni Leigh and the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash.As exhibited on "Tough Little Boys" and "Smoke Rings in the Dark", he can really deliver an emotional ballad, and this album doles it out in spades, but he can also really crank it on songs like "Ring" and the amazing and honest "Nickajack Cave".This makes it my pick for the best male country album of 2006.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTLY THE BEST!
I am biased - I love Gary Allan. I have every CD - I love every song...but this one...it speaks volumes about the power of music. He could have dealt with his pain in a private way or he could have done this. Putting his misery on display is the only way a musician, an artist, a writer can deal with life. This man is the most amazing musician, honest, raw and true to his own blood. He follows his heart, he stays true to himself and while he may not be CMA Entertainer of the Year or even Male Vocalist of the Year - he is by far the most talented and most unique country artist out there. The true irony of life would be if this intense personal album brings him the overdue credit that he deserves. Perhaps the personal tragedy behind the album will bring a sense of peace to other people dealing with the same inner pain as Gary's wife and they will feel that they are not alone. BTW - a chapter in my book is titled "Life Ain't Always Beautiful"...but I swear Gary Allan has it right, life is a freaking beautiful ride!

4-0 out of 5 stars Gary Allen Scores Big with Darkness
Gary Allen's latest offering "Tough All Over" may be a very dark album overall, but Gary and coproducer Mark Wright do a fabulous job of exploring Gary's pain. Althoughthe album is rather "dark", Gary's voice cuts through with a "true-to-life" hurt. He's literally "been there, done that", especially with the three songs he co-wrote: "I Just Got Back From Hell", "Puttin' Memories Away" and the album's closer "Puttin' My Misery On Display". The Southern California native doesn't need to prove where he's been lately. You can hear it in every song. Tasty lead guitar licks from studio ace Brent Rowan and a sparingly used string section, bring this album home in great style. Two of Nashville's best backup singers: John Wesley Ryles and Wes Hightower compliment Gary's sometimes edgy voice with style. The first hit of the album "Best I Ever Had" will remain one of Country's most haunting ballads, especially after seeing the video. This is a healing album for Gary, who last year experienced the tragedy of losing his loving wife. Gary took very little time off to let the hurt fester, instead choosing to stay on the road and work through his pain. He's an awesome concert performer as well. A great piece of work from a great singer and songwriter. I see this album eventually going Platinum, and deservedly so. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Im Passing Away onto the better life
This is the perfect cd by 3dd before they changed their sound (much to my dissapointment). The songs are all in your face, straightforward rock songs so no bulls**ting around and no soft songs (except for 'Be Like That' which kicks @$$!). The better life is my fav song on the cd but all the songs are worthy of 5 stars as they display real talent and appreciation towards the rock genre. I cant compare this cd to any other as its sound is very unique and special in its own right. Pick it up today and ROCK ON!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I expected...
When I first got this album years ago, through a CD club - I fully expected to sell or trade it. Well, I sill have it.
5-0 out of 5 stars 'The Better Life' couldn't have been much better...
Anyone who knows me knows of my fading love for this band. When this album dropped I was floored at the presence this small, out of no-where band had, but with each following release I've become more and more hesitant to pick 'em up.The whole reason a band stays with you is the fact that they can evolve into something better, and 3Doors had a great start and should have kept growing, but with each album we get the same recycled songs, and quite frankly none of them are half as good as the ones found on this album.SO that brings me to here and now and the fact that this review is for 'The Better Life' and so I'll stop griping and start writing.'Kryptonite' was a large success and rightfully so...it was new, it was good and it was catchy.'Be Like That', which was on the American Pie soundtrack, was also a success, mostly because of the success of the film, but the sound they aquired by stripping things down and delivering a ballad suited them perfectly and provided a base for them to work from.Songs like 'Duck and Run' and 'Down Poisen' stand out as the two best tracks here, while 'So I Need You' serves as a brilliant closing track and a sweet love song at that with great lyrical content and a catchy vibe to it.This album is awesome and will stand time as their best effort, which is sad because if they would only improve they could knock this of the park. ... Once upon a time in Los Angeles--during the infamous mid-'80s Guns N' Roses era--the City of Angels was spewing forth dirty, blues-influenced rock bands. Little Caesar, Junkyard, the Hangmen--even the names were redolent of dirty rock & roll, Harleys, and barroom brawls. A new breed of rebel rock has emerged in Buckcherry--sober, tattooed blues-metallers whose charismatic singer, Josh Todd, boasts a compelling Iggy Pop-Jim Morrison-Axl Rose persona. Buckcherry's 12-track debut album, produced by Terry Date (Pantera) with coproduction from former Sex Pistol Steve Jones, kicks off with the nasty, aggressive groove of "Lit Up." While the song is irresistible, many might have a problem with the "I love the cocaine" chorus. Still, Todd's persona works well with the band's aggro, melodic stomp, and with bands such as the Black Crowes, Nashville Pussy, and Honky Toast keeping barroom rock alive, Buckcherry are a ballsy and bold entry into the fray, as suited to share a stage with Hanoi Rocks as they would be with Motörhead. 4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy Sophomore Recording
Despite the criticism this group faced by being told that they were ripping off the major bands from Seattle, they continued to stand strong with this follow-up.Some of the best-known songs on here are the rockin' "Vasoline", the light rock of "Interstate Love Song" & the pseudo-ballad "Big Empty" which was also a part of the soundtrack for the movie, The Crow. One other noteworthy song is the acoustic "Pretty Penny."These songs are good, the CD is pretty decent over all.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Sell me down the river..."
Stone Temple Pilots second album, Purple is their best album ever. Stanout tracks include: Kitchenware and Candy Bars, Interstate Love Song, Big Empty, and Vasoline. All the songs are catchy, timeless, and creative. If you are a huge STP fan, this is the album that made them one of the best grunge bands of the '90s. Buy this gem today!

5-0 out of 5 stars STP fights back...
The massive success of Stone Temple Pilots debut album "Core" (1992) was something of a mixed blessing for the group. While the album was a runaway smash, ultimately selling eight million copies and spawning such radio staples as "Plush," "Sex Type Thing" and "Creep," success definitely came at a price. Almost immediately the San Diego group was viciously and mercilessly attacked and ripped apart by the press. Accusations of ripping off the Seattle grunge scene and jumping on the flavor of the month alternative bandwagon were the most common complaints. "Plush," in particular was singled out as plagiarizing Pearl Jam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet never sounded so good before or since...
So back in '97 I was driving along minding my own business when Bittersweet Symphony came on the radio and smacked me in the face. At least thats what it felt like. A pleasant smack. The kind that made me feel as if I had been zoned out all day until I heard the song and suddenly I felt alive! OK, maybe thats a bit dramatic, but you get the picture. I fell in love with the song, and even now 10 years later I still get swept up in the emotion of the song.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the Hype
But for "The Drugs don't Work," which is marginal at best, this album is boring...cookie-cutter, nothing original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Bitter Here,It's all Sweet!
This album is a masterpiece! Most albums start out promising, then about three songs into it we lose interest and...turn it off. This album will surprise you,it get's better towards the end,"Neon Wilderness" is more of an intermission than an actual song,so you can't actually count that as a song, although I'm sure that there are some over zealous Verve fans out there that do,and that's ok.From the opening, soothing string arrangement of "Bitter Sweet Symphony" our hearts are held captive, then the whooshing rush of the full orchestra crashes in (this part,by the way,is the sample that Richard Ashcroft used and had to share writing credits with Jagger and Richards)and we are hooked without a doubt, to this beautiful song."Sonnet" is a touching ballad about friendship,"The Drugs Don't Work" isn't a song about drug abuse as the title may seem to impose, rather it's a moving ballad that Ashcroft wrote about the death of his father,it's difficult to listen to this song and not think of a loved one who has passed on."Lucky Man" is a brilliant song that Ashcroft dedicates to his wife when he performs it live.Simply put, every song on this album is a gem.Go out and buy this album now.Enjoy! ... Editorial Review

On their sophomore effort, Canada's Cowboy Junkies manage to make a one-day recording session in an old church one of their most satisfying listens. Featuring the sultry voice of Margo Timmins, the precise musicianship of her brothers Peter (on drums) and Michael (on guitar), and bassist Alan Anton, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a unique work
This is the most intimate cd I have ever heard. The band actually went into a church and recorded the album live. What you hear is what they did, no studio modifications.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Trinity Session is great!
I really enjoy listening to the Cowboy Junkies...if you like them, you'll like this CD too.

5-0 out of 5 stars simply great music
This is a wonderful record. Its moody and moving. There is great spacing in the production meaning there are lots of places in the mix to hear all of the subtle things going on, it is not over produced. It was recorded live meaning everyone played at once with just an overhead mike. It is record with great soul and feel. all of the songs have their own signature to them even if you have heard them before by other artists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Less idiosyncratic Lambchop = a superb release
Damaged only has 10 songs, but the result is the first Lambchop release that you actually wish didn't end so soon. Previous CDs have tended to be overlong, bordering on tediousness and somewhat same-sounding. Don't misunderstand me, their back catalog is impressive and Lambchop is a great, unique band, but it can be a chore to listen to many of their full length releases from start to finish. Not this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lambchop's latest masterpiece
It may take a few listens, but Lambchop's new album soon reveals it's true worth.
