It can be a dangerous proposition when an artist decides to challenge himself. Ambition means precious little without the talent to back it up. Idaho's Josh Ritter needn't worry: he's willed himself to great heights on Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Soulful and Poetic the next Bob Dylan?
My first opportunity to listen to Josh Ritter came on the radio. When I heard his first song it took me a while to catch onto his style. It didn't take long before I was addicted.I soon bought his cd and was completley impressed.Josh is a trully outstanding musician that is well beyond his years. His lyrics are deep almost to deep.I had a friend walk in when I was playing the cd and their first thought was "I haven't heard this Dylan song."To compare maybe a little premature.Although I feel we need more music like this.I will be sharing these great songs with many of my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars The next Bob Dylan..but better?
This is, by far, one of the best albums I've bought recently.Oddly enough, it's not because it's perfect. The imperfections on this album make it what it is.
5-0 out of 5 stars America's great new songwriter/singer
OK, perhap's he's not that new, but new enough. I just discovered him this past weekend as he gave a free mini-concert at a record store, and then I went to his concert at night in Boise, Idaho. Wow! Amazing stuff.

Editorial Review

It’s likely that a decade after its debut record this band now has fans who might ask, "You mean Dave Grohl was in a band before the Foo Fighters?" But they, or any Foo followers who pine for the increasingly refined vocals and polished pop-punk uniformity of the first four albums, will swallow this one whole--or at least half. For as much as vocalist/bandleader Grohl and Co. mix a similar concoction on the 20-song double CD, they manage to agitate the formula ever so slightly. Disc one follows the Foo’s classic sonic blueprint: lip-smacking melodies and enigmatic lyrics, double-barrel guitars and drums that attack. But songs take a gentle turn on the second CD, showcasing Grohl’s underrated vocals amidst a high-energy ensemble of acoustic guitars, piano and mandolin (by studio guest John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin). Singing, not shouting, Grohl flips potential teen-rock anthems like "Miracle" and "Cold Day in the Sun" (with drummer Taylor Hawkins handling lead vocals) into impending adult-oriented radio staples and, 11 years after Nirvana, the Foo Fighters may finally have their triumph. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a CD
I recently bought this cd and after having it for a few weeks it just seems to get better and better. The second cd is much mellower than the first, but the songs are well written and just seem to grow on you. It is one of the best cds I've ever bought. You won't be disappointed.
3-0 out of 5 stars A heavily flawed masterpiece in need of more focus.
I remember my first kiss, where I was when Princess Di died, and the first time I heard the song that changed my life. I was sat in the car waiting for my big brother to give me a lift to my friends house, so I switched on the radio. Lucky enough to catch the end of `Everlong' by Foo Fighters. I'd lived and breathed rock music for a good few years before that moment, hell, I was even at this point in a band. But somehow I'd managed to completely miss the story so far, of Dave Grohl and the ever changing line up of the fighters of Foo. I made my big bro buy me the album for my birthday. Pretty soon I was an obsessive fan. It was often an in joke between me and friends as to just how obsessed I was. Awaiting every album with Swiss quartz precision. It became a military manoeuvre to get a new release before every human possible. (Now due to downloading this has become impossible.) but when I heard that the Foo Fighters were planning a double album- Yes- a double album, my heart skipped.
5-0 out of 5 stars Searching for the roots!
Nowadays, Foo Fighters occupies a high status in the reduced scope of rock bands with innovative proposals. Their sound has turned more solid, with major emphasis in the discursive lines, and with the presence of a granitic expression where the riffs and beats ride together without free obstreperous, but in search of the wise balance between lyrics and the atmosphere of the heavy rock.

Jeff Tweedy might carry the name recognition, but the rest of his band-on-the-side carries the mail on the fourth release from this Midwest all-star group. Though the Wilco leader teams with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris on a pair of nimble pop songs--the elegantly strummed "Listen Joe" and Kinks cover "Strangers"--it's Louris who's clearly at the head of the class with self-assured vocals ("Another Fine Day," "Think About Yourself"), lush harmonies ("Long Time Ago") and those unmistakable guitar leads ("Frying Pan Eyes"). Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy's obligatory rocker "Hurricane" is a high point, as is the album's lead track "You Make It Easy," which has Kraig Johnson warbling over a thumping piano lead and chunky fuzz guitar. But most welcome among the 15 songs are two contributions from Louris's fellow Jayhawk Marc Perlman: the refreshing "Corvette" and "Cure for This," a '60s-speckled pop song sung by Muni Loco, the wife of producer Paco Loco and the first female to grace a recording by Golden Smog. 1-0 out of 5 stars This one goes to the used CD store...
I had such high hopes for this one! However, after about a dozen tries, I cannot stand this music. It is uninteresting and possibly contains the worst songwriting and lyrics I have heard in years.Or maybe it's the schmultzy music that is so unbelievably weak.Whatever it is, it has no magic, no risk, no intelligence.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed
Maybe a few more listens will help, but this album reminds me in a lot of ways of Bubble Gum music from the late 60's.Way too cute. After eight years I expected a lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Subjectively speaking, a great disk. Period.
Okay, these user reviews are plagued by a high degree of subjectivity, though what is objective about music? Plainly speaking, after listening to AFD for four weeks now, I believe this disc is quite exceptional both in its variety, the quality of songwriting, and overall production. This was my first exposure to Golden Smog, but since I have explored (that is, purchased) "Weird Tales." I just don't have the same feeling toward that disc as I do for AFD. For the record, I am not overly enamored with Wilco's recorded output, and had no previous exposure to the Jayhawks. Another Fine Day, then, needs no antecedents to make a salient musical impression. I am not given to hyperbole, but can best sum up my feeling about AFD this way: I have already downloaded it in its entirety from ITMS, but am now ordering two physical discs from Amazon--one for my 24-year old son, and one just for posterity. ... This CD is great. It has up-beat songs and easly listening. If you like Jack Johnson or the Red Hot Chili Peppers, you should definetly buy this CD! Dark Blue is one of the best songs. Their new tour with The Academy Is... will be great. I cant wait to go to one of their shows!

I love SoCo, so I was pretty hyped to hear what Andrew McMahon's side project, Jack's Mannequin, would sound like. After previewing some songs online, and not being able to get them out of my head, I immediately went out and bought the CD. It was more than worth it! Over 6 months later I still find myself putting the CD on repeat and listening to it again and again and again. All of the songs are catchy, well crafted, and incredible lyrically. It is hard to pick out a favorite song because every single one is great. I go through different phases of which song is my favorite (currently it would have to be "Dark Blue" and "Bruised.")

Moving to Los Angeles after an unproductive stint in Nashville, Kentucky-born Dwight Yoakam made a name for himself by reviving the more robust honky-tonk traditions of the Bakersfield Sound--a bold contrast with Music City's assembly-line approach. Her intensely personal lyrics grabbed the headlines, but the bravest departure here is the way Morissette's unique vocals stand naked in the mix--a technique that drives home the painful honesty of tracks like "Right Through You," "Forgiven," and "All I Really Want." Sheryl Crow or an earthier Tori Amos are fair analogies, but Morissette is a genuine original with a rare ability to make listeners care, think, and question. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rock music's queen of hurt
Radio-friendly rock music had a new queen once Alanis Morissette stepped into the picture here. Her oft-excruciatingly personal lyrics and blazingly unique singing scored her numerous radio smashes and with her first official rock record Jagged Little Pill the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter delivers one of the best albums in music history. From its first international No. 1 smash "You Oughta Know," album Jagged Little Pill's presence became known on the charts with numerous other hit singles like "All I Really Want," "Hand In My Pocket," "You Learn," "Head Over Feet" and "Ironic."Morissette has a slight misstep here with the cooing sometimes-good-sometimes-just-so-off ballad "Perfect" and "Mary Jane," Pill's most unmemorable moments--but in the end this genuine songstress produces original and unbelievably unique rock music with real hurt and heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something everyone needs to swallow
What more can be said about Canada-born singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette? She has proven herself over and over as being one of music's leaders with her overly personal lyrics and radio-friendly beats.Jagged Little Pill is as perfect as a commercial rock record can get. It's not only hardcore and controversial, it's more importantly marketable.Every song here is a brilliant piece of art (speaking in terms of rock music, that is--like most music, it may not be everybody's choice), but more interesting is how Morissette sings it--the pain, anger and hurt come off in a wrenchingly shrill, nasally and sometimes annoyingly unique sound that's all her own.Blisteringly personal and full of angst, Jagged Little Pill is definitely something everyone should swallow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dynamic, chance taking album!LOUD!
I still have the cassette of this album (which I've had since 1995) and I plan on getting the CD soon. I bought her best of album last November.Alanis Morissette made a dynamic album that fully defines grunge and alternative rock's 6-year dominance in the 90s.Everything all clicks on here!I still like to scream when singing the chorus of You Oughta Know! And still like to turn it up every time! She's not taking no mess when she chews her man up for cheating on her in that song! This song just came out of nowhere in 1995 just as people were still playing their 1994 Hootie and the Blowfish albums way too much.A lot of this album has to be personal, especially You Learn, Hand In My Pocket, Wake Up, Forgiven, Ironic and many others. This album is strong in its rock sound, its lead guitars and full wall of sound on every cut! You Oughta even has shades of hip-hop's beats in its rock sound.I was so pleased that it won Album of the Year at the Grammys (and I didn't even watch that show!) because it broke the mold of the same kind of safe pop album that those voters like to choose (soft and sappy Diane Warren-like pop ballads and so forth). This was the LOUD album that the Grammys finally chose long after Michael Jackson's hugely succesful Thriller from the '80s!Alanis has still maintained a strong fan base and her music still sounds great with her later albums. She does the music SHE wants to do and she is winning at all counts.Jagged Little Pill will always be a favorite and a classic from me! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic at its best
Just purchased this album yesturday and was very excited to find out how perfect it was.My wife is not yet a fan of Sufjan's, so I am going solo to his only appearance in LA in October to see him, but the wife actually says that she kinda digs this album. So its definetly Sufjan but its more acoustic and more banjo than his newer stuff which is great.Check it out if you can find it until its re-released...

5-0 out of 5 stars Like Iron and Wine, but more spiritual
From the banjo on the first song to the lyrics "Son of Man! Son of God!", Sufjan pulls together an album worth remembering.Highlights include: All The Trees..., To Be Alone With You, Abraham, We Won't Need Legs to Stand, and Seven Swans. At times poetic, at times prophetic, and at times just lush and beautiful, Seven Swans will grow on you more and more with every listen. With its gorgeous overt Christian lyrics and folksy songs, Sufjan has proven that he is an upcoming singer/songwriter that means business. In an industry flooded with such perverse imagery, Sufjan gives us the word of God and the observations of an imperfect man who recognizes God's perfect power.Whatever the subject, Sufjan can tackle it head on without compromising who he is.For fans of Iron and Wine, this CD is a must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This was my intro to Sufjan Stevens, and it was a wonderful place to start.I was at first a little turned off by the Christianity themes, references, etc., but I couldn't deny that I loved the music (and oddly enough, The Transfiguration, perhaps the most blantantly Christian and certainly most Biblical, is my favorite song).Perhaps not as... impressive as Illiniose, but if you enjoyed any of his other albums, you should certainly get this one, too, or if you're just checking it out, at least listen to the samples so you know what you're getting into, or rather, just get it.You'll be pleased with this purchase. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of those
I few years ago I randomly picked up Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and was hooked. Hungry for more F'Lips I went back in time to this -- and was disappointed. Besides Race for the Prize and Waitin' For A Superman I didn't find much else to like. I decided to pick up this CD again recently, since I was going to one of their shows (it was unbelievable) and I was blown away. This is one of those albums that takes some time and careful listening to in order to fully appreciate its beauty. Tracks like Feeling Yourself Disintegrate and A Spoonful Weights A Ton are so well crafted I can only smile and sometimes even shed a tear. Simply gorgeous and worth every second.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have a nice day.
The Flaming Lips are perhaps the ultimate "happy" rock band.Their music is just perfectly fluffy and uplifting, without having to be too overtly sunny and positive.I really think it's impossible not to feel good while listening to these guys.Heck, even Trent Reznor lists the Flaming Lips as one of his favorite bands, and look at what a gloomy guy he is.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Modern Day Symphony
The major reason that "The Soft Bulletin" is such an amazing album is because at the time that it came out no really excepted that the Flaming Lips could make an album like it. Whilst they constantly realised albums that were brilliant, they were very much a cult college band.

2-0 out of 5 stars er.... I don't think I like it
I proudly proclaim Veruca Salt to be my favourite band of all time (with or without Nina)and have come to adore all of their music in all it's variety and uniqueness...even Nina's off-spin albums... I'm confused, then, that I don't think I like this album at all! Where are the belting hooks? Where is the clever crafted angst? Where are the lyrics that suprise and challenge you? Where is Louise's beautiful voice souring above the din? "You've got me running but I can't see you coming, baby" ...???? Every time I try and listen to it I can't help skipping through the songs hoping the next will be better.I do like "So weird".Sort of.Sorry Veruca Salt... I still love you.But I think I must be getting old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let me clarify the negative reviews....
Don't even bother reading the negative reviews because they are not genuine opinions, but rather emotions fueled by Nina Gordon's departure from the band. I don't know why people continue to take their anger out on Louise for continuing to rock, Nina is the one that left us. I've been a fan of Veruca Salt since the beginning and this album is just as good as any other. Don't be fooled or skeptical.
5-0 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening to it
I've been a fan of Veruca Salt from the beginning, and right now this is my favorite of their albums.Louise Post is a total rock goddess, and her vocals are even stronger and more nuanced than before.I'm finding lately that when people are talking to me, I'm pretending to listen, but really singing Louise's lyrics (from IV) in my head. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good debut
Every once in a while, an alternative rock band comes along and proves to me that no, rock did NOT die along with John Lennon. Nirvana, R.E.M., Coldplay, U2 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have already done so. Well, add Pearl Jam to the list! 2-0 out of 5 stars Best album of the 90's? Yeah right.
The music here itself is OK at best. The guitarring is not bad, though nothing special, but certainly decent. The bass and the drums are average. But the songwriting here sucks big donkey balls as the album is incredibly slow and dull. Trust me, I tried to like this but there isnt a singe song on this CD I could listen without hitting either the skip or the stop button. It's a lot better than Nirvana though. But it's still not that good. The vocals here are just plain awful, and so are the lyrics. As Eddie Vedder sounds like some dog on crack. I don't know, is Eddie trying to appeal to some bunch of nerds who can't get over the fact that grunge is dead or what? Okay, I'll give it that, the solo on Alive is pretty good, even great but other than that there is absolutely nothing I can recommend it for. Maybe for a cure for insomnia this will be good though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't forget Tompall
I agree, this is one of the best albums ever.I grew up listening to it, and bought the cd as soon as it was released (my old LP is still played as well.)The only thing I would add is that don't forget Tompall. He was one of the best, even though this album wasn't his best effort.I would suggest checking out the newly re-released album "Charley" which is one of the two albums on "My Nortorious Youth".If you love the outlaws you will love this album.BTW, anyone know how tompall is doing these days?

5-0 out of 5 stars If you truly like country music, you will like this CD.
Waylon and Willie, of course, are the spine of this collection. Jessi Colter adds great measures of marvelous spice with her soulful singing and songwriting. Tompall Glazier registers a tad lesser than the rest, but it's still a fantastic CD. And the bonus tracks are pure icing on the cake. Mmmmmmmmmm. Great country music!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This album demands to be listened to over and over
Blue October's songs are the most honest expression of emotions I've heard in a pop/rock band. This cd covers every range of emotion from rage to helpless love. Although it's clear that the singer/songwriter is a lot more depressed than most people, he expresses it in a way that nearly all people can connect with. His lyrics are poetic and earnest, his voice is intense and melodic. And what rock band has a violin?
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent October
Blue October is one of those bands that captures you and doesn't let go. History for Sale is an album that captures all sides of this complex band - angst, happiness, relief, desperation - all with a blend of driving guitars, catchy hooks, and the dynamic vocals of Justin Furstenfeld.
1-0 out of 5 stars Another reason so many kids are mean and depressed!
What dribble. Why isn't there a half star or better yet a negative number?

Alice in Chains were initially tagged with the "grunge" moniker, when in fact their haunting, ponderous sound was far closer to the progressive rock of Queensryche. Their second album, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse of Lane Staley's world.
Despite popular opinion, neither Nirvana nor Pearl Jam were the best band to emerge from the early-nineties Seattle music scene. That was Soundgarden.Likewise, neither of those bands produced the era's best album. That was Dirt.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pure classic from the early 90's
Of the four great bands from Seattle, Alice In Chains are easily the darkest and heaviest. Though they have been lumped into the "grunge" category, the band actually formed in the mid-80's, releasing their debut album a year before Nirvana's Nevermind. Without getting into unnecessary comparisons between the two bands, upon Nevermind's significant breakthrough in early 90's music, Alice In Chains' label also started to promote them as an alternative band. That said, musically they are worlds apart. While carrying some of the genre's characteristics, Alice In Chains encompasses deeper musical thought, utilising heavy fretwork and delving fearlessly into the path paved by Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin in the 1970's. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Empty Eyes and Dead-End Stares"
I first heard Alice in Chains 'Dirt' on a compilation album called 'Dad, I Blew Up America' that featured two tracks off 'Dirt', namely 'Rooster' and 'Hate to Feel'. It was 'Hate to Feel' that I particularly liked a lot so the album was a natural purchase and I can tell you I was not disappointed. Alice in Chains' always sounded like a mix of Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid' and Led Zeppelin's I & II and it's on 'Dirt' that they achieved that to near perfection while still sounding original. They should have called this their 'Greatest Hits' because all the songs are classics on Dirt. The thing that makes this record great is it's simplicity, there's nothing ostentatious or vague about it musically or lyrically. Musically it's rhythmically solid, bare, sometimes discordant and atonal and lyrically, direct, poignant and somewhat gleeful in it's delivery. The theme running through the record for the most part is that of drug taking, in particular Heroin, and it's in this quagmire that the dirt is delivered. 'Dirt' spoke on behalf of Generation X when it scaled the charts in 1992 helped along by the success of Nirvana and Soundgarden that swept away the glut of rubbish that clogged the rock charts before it. The early nineties was for a brief spell an exciting time for rock and say what you like about the so-called 'grunge scene' it produced its fair share of what will become classic records and it's undeniable that 'Dirt' was instrumental in building on the rock legacy for generations to come. It's an excellent album and a worthy addition to any collection, buy it if you don't already own it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I really enjoyed it. It had the songs I listened to in high school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only the first 15?
I find it strange that some people only got the first 15 of the 18 tracks. I only bought "The Buzz" (not Non Stop 90's Rock) and I got all 18 tracks. I would have been fine without the last three, anyway.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome!
If you were in the 90s with me and remember a lot of these songs you will love this CD! It has everything you want plus more. With the awsome songs like far behind by candle box and closing time by semisonic, its a great CD to relax to or drive fast and blaring the radio. If you love 90s rock, you will love this CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I am thoroughly enjoying this CD, every song on it. [You know how after you've listened to a CD several times, there are songs you eventually want to fast forward through?not so with this CD.]
5-0 out of 5 stars Jason - I Know!
I've always loved this album. I always liked how Lucinda says what she feels, plainly and sweetly. I've never cared for new country; but Loretta, George, Hank (sr.) were always heroes of mine.
5-0 out of 5 stars An unrelenting masterpiece
Lucinda Williams is, in my opinion, the preeminent bard of loss and longing."Car Wheels On A Gravel Road," as others have said, takes you deep into the experience of loss and grief just like the best fiction does, or even like the actual experience of grief itself. The album is a milestone in American music which will probably never be topped by Williams or anyone else--and that's ok, because it would be nearly impossible to do so.It is an equal with the greatest work of Dylan, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson, the Carter Family, etc.It will be remembered and listened to 100 years from now.
