Editorial Review

As is true with so many roots-rocking bands based in Austin, Texas, a sweaty club brings out the rambunctious best in Reckless Kelly, giving them a chance to stretch out and let loose on their first live recording. From the pulverizing opener of "Sixgun," which owes as much to AC/DC as the roadhouse, through the new party anthem, "Wiggles & Ritalin," and the reflective, acoustic "Wicked Twisted Road," the band feeds on the call-and-response energy of the hometown crowd and pays it back. The set offers tribute to Lone Star natives Alejandro Escovedo ("Castanets") and the Texas Tornados ("Guacamole"), as well as farther-flung inspirations such as Richard Thompson ("1952 Vincent Black Lightning") and the Beatles (a bluesy "Revolution"). "Baby's Gone Blues" begins as a riff-rocking piledriver and ends as a fiddle-driven breakdown, an encapsulation of the musical progression embodied within the band. On twangier fare such as "Nobody's Girl," frontman Willy Braun could pass as a vocal ringer for Steve Earle. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rockin' live album
Like the other reviewers, I LOVE Reckless Kelly and cherish my copy of their original live album, "Live at Stubbs". The vocals on Reckless Kelly Was Here aren't quite as strong as some of their others, but if you're looking to recreate some of their rockin' live show energy in your living room, you can't go wrong with this CD set.

4-0 out of 5 stars Live Reckless Kelly Live!
This disk captures the full throttle experience that is a Reckless Kelly show. Their own material continues to shine, their cover of Thompson's 1952 Vincent Black Lightening almost rates a 5 star just by itself. If you wish to introduce yourself or others to Reckless, this is the album to get. And if you want to reintroduce yourself to how very good they are, this is the album to get.

4-0 out of 5 stars A poor sound mix
Ok, I'm first, I lead off with that I love this band, I don't think they can be beat in todays music market, lots of energy, great song writing ability, masters of their insturments and they seem to really like each other, that's important, I loved the selection of songs and the home town crowd had them fired up, the sound?, well the guitars, fiddles and all came through like a champ! but the vocals, now I think Willy Braun is one of the best, I think he could sing just about anything and do a first class job of it, my gripe is, who mixed the vocal mike?, it sounds like it is at half volume, Willie's voice is drowned out by the band most of the time,If I didn't know the words to some songs already it would have been worse, I made changes to my set up and could only improve it a little, how could this error, that sticks out like a sore thumb, get passed over?, very disapointing. The video came through very strong, my hats off the the camera men, good job! I wish I could give this 5 stars, but I can't, this error ruins it. #2, well the recording of "Revolution" is the best I've ever heard!, man, it drives! it cooks!, Willy is at his best!, but David, man, you must have "blisters on your fingers!", your axe is on fire!, Lennon would have loved this!, why?, because it is real rock and roll!, this band is the tightest of any I've heard since the golden age, the 60's and early 70's, keep it up! ... Other reviewers have described this CD of music from Deadwood's first season in excellent detail, so it's enough for me to say that this collection is beautiful and evocative, plaintive, tense and saucy by turns.

An excellent representation of the first season of Deadwood, fine music and dialog from the series.

Editorial Review

Laying waste to all the wink-wink irony, dubious material, and vocal mediocrity that frequently mires alt-country fringe dwellers, the second outing from this Virginia-born belter marries tough, twangy rock with wild, unguarded emotion. Neko's principal charm may be her voice--sometimes coming on with Dusty Springfield's indigo-eyed soul (the dreamlike "Porchlight"), Patsy Cline's aching slow burn (the slinky "No Need to Cry"), and Wanda Jackson's imperious sexuality (the rockabilly "Mood to Burn Bridges")--but her songwriting (she cowrote every tune) is surprisingly consistent and memorable. She celebrates the "passion for life" found in her abandoned home of Tacoma, Washington, or a strapped-on Telecaster, and on her best song, "Guided by Wire," she balances between "darkest recollection" and the freedom of music, the kind that matters most, all those voices "singing my life back to me." 4-0 out of 5 stars Guided by your electric wire's hum
Think of this as a relative endorsement - I've become such a fan of Neko Case in the past year that Furnace Room Lullaby, my first purchase of hers, now seems a fairly subpar Case record, something which is less a criticism than simply a high bar to live up to.There's a wealth of extraordinary songs on Furnace Room Lullaby - the cold echoes of the title track, the invigorating vocal heights of "Set Out Running," the haunted eloquence of "South Tacoma Way."What makes Case's songs so distinct is the way her melodies - as conventional as they'd ever be on this record - seem to invade with spare syllables, making each second of their short running time rattle around your head for days. What make's Furnace Room disappointing in light of the entire Case catalog is its lack of conceptual daring, its sidestepping of the passionate cohesion that elecrifies Blacklisted and Fox Confessor Brings The Flood.Certainly, she was just starting out with this record, but it falls short of her biggest accomplishments.Still, few artists can do what Case does - her powerful vocals and invasive lyrics are already in full swing, and on "Porchlight," she makes what may still be her finest and most singable song - a song whose longing is more memorable than its perfect melody.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neko Case - Furnace Room Lullaby
This is the first CD of Neko Case I have bought.I can't believe I have never heard her on the radio.I heard the title song on a DVD movie and had to check her out.She is a very good singer, and her style is unique. If you like country, but want some variety from the mainstream stuff, this is the singer you should look for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget Shania or Faith......
After I saw Neko on Breakfast with the Arts on A&E,I bought her newest cd,then bought this one.I haven't been disappointed yet and I doubt if I will be.Neko has the most beautiful and passionate voice out there and puts the Shanias and Faiths to shame..These songs should be radio and not the wannabes that make up most of country today...I mean, shouldn't Neko be more popular than the so- called country starlets that are out now?? In a perfect world, she would be...BUY THIS!!! ... Read more

I originally had bought this album in high school and have since played it from then on.
3-0 out of 5 stars 5.6/10.0
Pop quiz, kids: what do The Calling, Nine Days, and Vertical Horizon all have in common? If your guess was that they all shopped at Express for Men, you're wrong (I think Nine Days actually shops at Abercrombie). Actually, these three bands all belong to fin de siecle American rock/pop. The sounds of the 90s are unmistakable: the apotheosis of it being Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Life": loud, energetic, catchy. Everything was so clear back then: music was about precipitous decibel levels and fast tempos. But with the sweeping in of the new millennium, and the revolution in digital music, things got much more complicated; everything fractured into new sounds and endless variations: we now have glitch-heavy indietronic and freak folk, trip hop, and dozens more. Not that the acoustic movement in sound didn't have a substantial effect on mid-90s pop. But "back then" mainstream "rock/pop" was obvious to pretty much everyone. However, in the music bands like Vertical Horizon produced, you could see tinges of a new, more fractured version of pop.
5-0 out of 5 stars After a few years .... it still is a great album!
I bought this ablum when it first came out. I really enjoyed it. Being an older rocker myself; I enjoyed the music. The kids (mine) liked it too but they soon grew tired of it probably because I played it so much.

Editorial Review

Like a rootsier Jimmy Buffett, Delbert McClinton is an established, hard-touring veteran whose audience doesn't expect from him too much out of the norm. Regardless, the Texan's quintessential mix of country, R&B, Tex-Mex, blues, honky-tonk, New Orleans bump, lounge jazz, and good-time rock and roll is durable enough to sustain a career, especially since nobody does it nearly as well as he does. In the spirit of "don't fix what isn't broken," this album of 13 McClinton originals preserves the established formula. But to his credit, the leathery-voiced singer, now in his mid-60s, never seems to be going through the motions. He delivers this good-natured Americana with gutsy enthusiasm and enough raw energy to power the ocean liner on one of his famous blues cruises. Just as comfortable tearing into the Stonesy rock of "Dead Wrong" as the soft, Spanish guitar-driven folk of "Down into Mexico"--a tale of a robbery/relationship gone bad that flawlessly mixes his tender and tough sides--McClinton revels in his element. Fiddles, sax, and pedal steel augment the arrangements, highlighting the country and blues at the heart of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars His best album in years
I've been a Delbert fan for more than 20 years, and this is his best release in a long time. There is no voice like Delbert's; man, can he sing. From the raucous "Hammerhead Stew" to some welcome country songs like "Midnight Communion" and "Two Step Too" this CD rocks. As for those reviewers who dislike the country element here, they aren't true Delbert fans, since real aficiandos know that some of Delbert's early works were

I can find nothing bad about this cd. It's like Springsteen lyrics, guitar strains of Marty Robbins and maybe a little touch of John Fogerty. I can recall sitting in a bar thirty years ago with some of my military buds and listening to this kind of music, wishing we were someplace else. What memories this cd evolked! All in all I can say that Delbert McClinton is becoming part of my blues collection and will continue to add more.

5-0 out of 5 stars lone star star
Texas music is more than music from Texas. It's an alchemy of apparently disparate essences - blues, soul, rock'n'roll - and Delbert McClinton is a master chemist. Like his fellow Lone Star Staters Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Doug Sahm, McClinton's defiance of definition may have denied him a wider audience, but those who know him can consider themselves, to quote one of his songs, "one of the fortunate few". McClinton wrote most of the 13 songs here and anything he doesn't write he makes his own (I'll Change My Style, associated with Jimmy Reed, becomes wonderfully greasy swamp R&B). For tragic, noirish adventure with a femme fatale, try Down into Mexico ("Sherrie was a dancer / she was a schemer / we came up with a foolproof plan"). Those who have lost love will share the ache of Kiss Her Once For Me ("and there's a part of her life I won't be there to see / when you're holding her tonight, kiss her once for me"). McClinton just turned 65 and shows no sign of decline. Start here and work back to such gems as Genuine Cowhide (1976) and The Jealous Kind (1980).(This review appeared in The Age newspaper in Melbourne, Australia.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Too great for words...
Tell me how in the hell a band like Green Day with their simple guitar and drum rythyms get to be so big and an alternative meets punk band like SD doesnt get near the props they should? Its all marketing strategy in my opinion.SD blows the lid off with this album.Johnny Cash's remake, Ring of Fire totally rocks along with the jazzy lyrics of story of my life and sick boy make you think about the "good times" that everyday people can relate to...a perfect five stars for me.This is easy listening that anyone can enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite "New" Band since College
Every song is superb.Driving, running, daydreaming, this Social D classic makes me feel young and glad my hearing is still good."She's a Knockout" is as good as any song I've heard since college."Ring of Fire" is the only cover and it's worthy of the original."Story of My Life" is the best song and its lyrics are as good as the incredible music.Buy this CD and then "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" and you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars SD rocks 15+ years later
Wow, this is such a great album throughout. One bonus is that it's relatively short and there are no wasted, throwaway tracks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it was good...
Well Crossfade may just be another modern rock Alt Metal band but that doesn't make them bad. Sure, they don't really add anything new to the music out now but that shouldn't take away from the music itself. All I know is from what I heard they have some really good tracks. I first heard the track "Cold" on the radio and it was just one of those songs that I love instantly. I just had to go out and get the album. After getting the album It turned out to be pretty good. I pretty much enjoyed everything on here. Although, my favorite tracks would have to be "Cold", "Starless", "Colors", and "Dead Skin". Here's the track ratings...

I just got this album today and I liked the three singles. Not a bad debut, but I have heard a lot better. Since it has been out for awhile, I'm sure you can find this for way under $10 in a bargin bin. So check it out!

5-0 out of 5 stars R.E.M.'s Rich Recording
'Life's Rich Pageant' is the fourth R.E.M. full-length album, and like the predecessors, is accomplished. This album, like the others, has a trademark. Here it contains their most unconventionally conventional pop and rock songs."...Pageant" contains propulsive anthems and some of their most pop-pleasing songs of any album. Their accomplishments were enough to propel them to the top ten next time around.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best of REM
Pageant is REM's best album, in my opinion, followed by Murmur and Automatic. This album contains a unique blend of their jangle-folk-rock roots and the lyrical mainstream band they would later become. For the first time, political themes show up frequently through a number of songs (Flowers of Guatemala, These Days, Begin the Begin, even Cuyahoga). This style is fantastic, but unfortunately unique to Pageant.Sadly, they basically abandoned this style for Document and Green (their worst work), finally rising out of the ashes with Out of Time and Automatic. So buy this album, because it's your only chance to hear something this good from REM.
5-0 out of 5 stars Their best
I've followed REM since their "Fables" days, and "Pageant" is my favorite of all of their albums followed closely by "Automatic for the People". I get the feeling that REM is running out of melodies as of late...or else, they don't want to repeat themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Tool, They Are 10 Years
ok first off, i like 10 years basically.....and rite now their album is the only i played for an entire month str8 everday, and i mean everyday at least 2ce, and whats up the ppl saying they sound like Tool, and honestly I REALLY LIKE TOOL, but they jus dont sound like Tool to me, my Fav track is "The Recipe"...thats my fav off the album, but u know what u realise about a great band is, is when their HIT SONG, isnt your favourite song, you all wittingly know what i said is true, anyways, i hope to hear more from 10 years keep up the good work ppl and above all, i LOVE all the songs, not 1 i dislike, love all of emP.S. see if u can get "Killing All That Holds You" album, i love the songs Seven and Frailty

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Tool
I honestly do not see how this sounds like Tool at all.I do however agree that it sounds very similar to A Perfect Circle.Either way, it's a pretty good CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars good band in studio, great band live
I had only heard "Wasteland" on the radio a few times but i honestly really liked the song as soon as i heard it. That was it though, i never downloaded any songs or bought the album. I thought they were good but nothing to spend my hard earned money on. That is UNTIL i saw them LIVE. I was at the Family Values Concert in Ct this past september and i completly forget they were there until i saw them talking on the second stage. They were the special 420(alot of that at the concert lol)band and they blew my away. I cant remember all the songs but "PREY","WASTELAND","THROUGH THE IRIS",and "THE AUTUMN EFFECT" were all performed so perfectly that IF Korn didnt perform great (like they always do)10 Years would have been the best band of the day. 10 Years did so great that somehow a mosh pit was started right on the lawn during one of the songs. There went from being 5 kids to about 30 in 2 mins. We all came out bleeding from somewhere. There is a moment i wont forgot were i just stood there and looked at the people jumping in the pit and said " Goddamn how did this happen during 10 Years?" That pit from that point on never stopped during the rest of the concert. 10 years is a band you should deffinetly give a chance. They might not be the most oringal or oringal at all for that matter but they do what they do better than most bands today. ... Read more

Emo-rock band Jimmy Eat World exemplify all that is the modern radio rock sound. Singing and playing with a conviction and sincerity that will melt the heart of even the most stoic of listeners, they produce rousing, well-crafted anthems along the lines of Third Eye Blind at their roughest or a more polished Green Day. These guys appear to be able to write ready-made singles at the drop of a hat, as evidenced by "Your House" as well as the title track. In fact, there is a rather shocking maturity to their material that belies the band members' ages (all in their 20s). While they sometimes veer into cringe-worthy power-ballad territory, overall Jimmy Eat World give the people what they want with Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Emo Album Ever?
...That's a good question! Thus begging the question, what are the best Emo albums?Well The Green Album has to be noticed, Weezer's influence on the genre to obvious to ignore. The Used gets several votes, Ocean Avenue not far behind, Panic!'s debut deserves some recognition for its current popularity, All Killer No Filler's inconsistent but a classic...Any more?Well sure if you count American Idiot, From Under The Cork Tree, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, and a few other wannabes but are those albums really quality? No.So is the commercial break though and best ever effort from one of the new millenniums most talent artists the greatest Emo album in existence?I say yes.Nothing beats `Bleed American', a new age anthem in the prestigious vein of `One Step Closer' and `Crawling In The Dark.'And with `A Praise Chorus', `The Middle', and of course everyone's favorite, `Sweetness', Jimmy Eat World has three of New Rock's grandest and most memorable songs.Even softer numbers `Here You Me' and `If You Don't, Don't' (which by the way, has excellent lyrics) have a special something that sets them apart from other mangled Emo ballads (i.e. the new Dashboard album). One complaint common among JEW fans is that the second half slightly lowers the quality bar;in other words `Cautioners' and `The Authority Songs' lack the quality of the anthems in front, thus creating some filler allegations. There are two problems with that argument:First, what songs are as good as `A Praise Chorus' and `Sweetness'?Not many period.Just because `Lounge Act' and `Drain You' aren't as good as `Teen Spirit' and `In Bloom' doesn't mean that they are filler, and it certain doesn't mean that Nevermind loses its impact during the second half.Because after all, what's as good as `Teen Spirit' and `In Bloom'?And secondly, it's not true anyways.I enjoyed the second half just as much as the first, especially after the first few listens where I just played the first three songs over and over.In the end, Jimmy Eat World has timeless classic written all over it.Classic Rock for the Emo generation.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars for the third album.
This was the first cd by JEW that I bought little knowing that they would soon become my favorite bands of all time. They have a very soft way about them that can only be explained as brilliant. The closest comparison I can come up with is a more diverse, mature, and stupendously lyrical version of Death Cab for Cutie. It is amazing that they were this far ahead of their time when they were about 21. If you haven't listened to this album, I would very strongly consider this to be your first JEW album and then get the better CD clarity. But for you who have listened and are curious about my favorite tracks, here is a list of them:
5-0 out of 5 stars Who cares about the genre?
alot of peoples reviews have been moaning about it being an emo album, or a pop album. I dont know if it is pop, punk, emo, pop-punk, punk-emo, all i know is that this is a very underated album. there are no songs on this album that i want to skip, it has slow and fast songs, and catchy guitar riffs(i think the word im looking for is riffs)so all in all i think if most people listen to it with an open mind they will enjoy it. if you start slaging it of before you have even heard it, the you wont ... 5-0 out of 5 stars He hurts so much!
....... and he writes amazing songs because of it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but he keeps getting better
As Ryan's first solo album this is a great breakaway from Whiskytown. His lyrics are inventive but his sound is still a little exploratory and he doesn't seemed to have quite found himself yet. It's definately worth a buy but his subsequent albums, especiallly Gold and Demolitions keep getting better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Classic
Ryan Adams is a deep artist who addresses many issues in his music. This cd however, is a little lighter than several of his other works. This album has the perfect title. For one, Ryan Adams strikes me as a heartbreaker. I mean he is gorgeous, and what woman on planet Earth wouldn't be attracted to a folk singer? Secondly, many of the songs deal with heartbreak. This cd is classic Ryan Adams. Songs like "To Be Young" and "Come Pick Me Up" will remind you of why you love him in the 1st place. Spectacular cd overall that won't let you down. It was one of the 1st Ryan Adams cds that I bought. It gives a good taste of what his style is like. If you love this cd, you will probably like Ryan Adams Gold, and Coldroses. Ryan Adams is a phenomenal artist. If you don't buy the cd for anything else, buy it because Ryan looks super sexy on the cover smoking a ciggarette. Seriously though, I would reccomend his music to anyone not only as a die-hard fan, but as a person who appreciates great music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars rewards multiple listens
a great, textured collection of music. it's almost too much to take in at once. listen to it several times, let the songs live inside you and you'll find that the music will open up and engulf you,

5-0 out of 5 stars Ryan Adams and the Cardinals - Cold Roses
Prior to hearing Ryan Adams music I was a country music hater. Now that I've had the opportunity to enjoy this CD and others I have seen the error of my ways throughout the years.Seriously, I cannot say I will now flush out my music collection with a comprehensive country collection, but I will be open to purchasing a CD here and there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ryan Adams hit a Home-Run!
This album is so great. I think Ryan Adams knows what works for him, and he sticks to it. In my oppinion, he never disappoints. I can see why this is titled Cold Roses. That has got to be the best song of both discs. Some other favorites of mine are "Sweet Illusions", "Beautiful Sorta", "Dance All Night", and "Let it Ride". I don't know what it is about Ryan Adams that makes his music so infectious. He is a wonderful artist, and I couldn't possibly love this album more. ... Read more

Wilco's de facto frontman, Jeff Tweedy, sports a colorful past, one where he wrote paint-peelers dedicated to late Minutemen founder D. Boon as a member of the feted (and maybe fated) Uncle Tupelo and where he dolefully crooned Woody Guthrie lyrics on 1998's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly my favorite Wilco album
Maybe it's because I live out in the country and don't listen to the radio, but I got on the Wilco boat after most folks had been around the lake a few times. There was a huge buzz surrounding Wilco after the release of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2002, but I didn't get my hands on it until much later. After I fell in love with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, I was recommended Summerteeth. While I'm on the boat now, I still consider myself a newcomer to the Wilco. I don't have all the albums yet and I haven't read the books (though I did enjoy the documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart), so this review is for all those other newcomers that I eager to find out what this Wilco band is all about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Songs!!! Don't Miss Out!!
Of all Wilco Cds, this one is by far my favorite! I absolutely adore Jeff Tweedy. These songs just wouldn't be the masterpieces they are without his vocals. "Shot in the Arm" "How to Fight Lonliness" and "She's a Jar" are the outstanding songs of the disc, however all the songs are great. I just can't say enough about this cd!! I love it. If you enjoy this cd, you may also like Mermaid Avenue. While both volumes are great, I highly suggest the first.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Wilco Album
This is my favorite Wilco album. I still have not figured out where the Britpop comparisons I have read in other reviews on here come from maybe because I never really liked the Britpop craze that much. The only thing I can tell about the comparison is the songs on this album have a lot more catchy pop hooks in them than previous Wilco releases. Never the less, buy this album or steal it if you must. Listen up and enjoy Summerteeth. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars get their other two! this one just isnt too good
now dont me wrong, grunge was a great genre when it was around, and nirvana was great, but this album just isnt too special at all. i mean grunge, essentially, was just hardcore/indie/punk/80's emo on downers....and they had the opposite effect of punk in which they became better in their newer releases. seriously, soundgarden, nirvana, etc started with hard rock music and then evolved into the "grunge." there are much better grunge releases than this...nevermind, dirt, in utero, superunknown, facelift, badmotorfinger, etc etc....if you want to hear nirvana in their raw, then that is the only reason id recommend this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely up to standard
I highly recommend this album for Nirvana fans and everyone else, too.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nirvana's first.
This might not be on par with Nevermind or In Utero but it's still a mighty good album. Blew, About a girl, School, Negative Creep, Scoff and Swap meet being the highlights. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God!
And just when I thought rock'n'roll was dead.DBT really are the savers of rock, they're all we've got now, and The Dirty South is simply amazing.Hard, fast, real, and most importantly fun, The Dirty South is an album to just shove in the cd player, and not have a need to skip a track. The perfect highway companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars top notch
the best band you've never heard of...my first taste of DBT - will certainly be going back for seconds, thirds,....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent picture of the South and Southern Music
I have heard various songs from this album on Satelite radio over the last few years, and decided to buy it this week.I LOVE it.I am a lifelong resident of the Southeast - Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and Florida.I would never live anywhere else by choice.Growing up with parents who would blast Skynyrd records as loud as the console stereo would go, I appreciate the evocation of those days. Also appreciated are the statements about the true issues of racism in the South - Personnaly I think that it is a more pronounced issue in Northern cities than it is here.As is written in the song "the Southern Thang", "...aint about the races, the crying shame, to the %@#!* rich the poor all look the same..." - and we pretty much get along with each other too.
