Warning: Even limited exposure to this French band's music is liable to turn the listener into a crazed zealot desperate to "just turn people on" to their music or to wander about aimlessly wondering aloud why they're not at least as well known as, say, Erlend Oye. The band's been relentlessly eclectic since they formed in the late '90s; they make hybrid music, an electronic-flavored rock that's impossible to describe without using up half a dozen hyphens in the process. It's their most straight-ahead, "rock"-sounding release, and if your first thought is that it wouldn't hurt if Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than the sum of their parts
Having followed Phoenix's discography along with Air, Tahiti 80, Zoot Woman, and a long list of other French bands that I found from links that traced back to Daft Punk, I suddenly find them in a class higher above -- and all their own -- compared to many of their ilk.
5-0 out of 5 stars THe more I listen to it, the better it gets
I was blown away by these guys in concert. They carried their earlier, more poppy stuff well, but their new stuff really rocked!THis album is full of great tunes that allude a bit to the early 80s punk movement, but also throw a couple unique styles out there. The use of repetition is the most blatant thing on the album that I haven't heard anywhere else.It kinda throws you off at first, but then, you learn to love it- great stuff!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great record; never rests, never falters.
I'm more and more impressed by Phoenix the longer I listen to them. This record has a beautiful sense of the power of repetition in a pop song. The subtle sonic and lyric shifts allow the songs to flex and bob about themselves, creating songs that more akin to woven compositions than just verse/corus/verse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Catchy!
People, honestly, who cares if Franz Ferdinand is today's best band or if this album is "funky" or not. This album is just good ol' fun music that's not at all watered down or lackluster. Just listen to this album and dance to it. Not every critical acclaimed album has to be a masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal debut album!
Very rarely will I come across a cd with songs aside from the single(s) worth listening to. This is ONE of the few!

When the Velvets recorded this debut, they were best known as the protégés of Andy Warhol (who designed the sleeve), and as a grating, combustive live band. Fueled by drummer Moe Tucker's no-nonsense wham and John Cale's howling viola, some of the straight-up rock & roll and arty noise extravaganzas here bear that out. But before Lou Reed was singing about sadomasochism and drug deals and writing lyrics inspired by his favorite poets, he was a pop songwriter, and this album has some of his prettiest tunes, mostly sung by Nico, the German dark angel who left the band after this disc. Even the sordid rockers are underscored by graceful pop tricks, like the two-chord flutter at the center of the classic "Heroin." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Velvet Underground and Nico
When this album came out in 1967, it changed rock and roll and added a new dimension to the rock lyricism. People who listened to it wanted to form rock and roll bands. This was the beginning of proto-punk and experimental rock. If it werent for VU & Nico, there wouldnt be any Sonic Youth, MC5, New York Dolls, and Alice Cooper. Avant-garde music for real music fans. Favorite songs are There She Goes Again, Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale, Run Run Run, I'm Waiting for the Man, and Heroin.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album may take some time to "break in"
A common reaction to this album is initial hatred, followed by becoming curious enough about it to want to give it a few more listens, follwed in turn by fascination with the album, followed by simply loving it. Such was my reaction. The lyrics are about dark topics such as drug addiction and S&M and they're very frank and direct, without any sugarcoating. There is good use of feedback, distortion, and noise in many of the songs, and this album ended up turning me on to that kind of thing. Check out European Son and marvel at the fact that every little bit of feedback in that track was supposed to be there in the first place.

4-0 out of 5 stars Warning: NOT FOR EVERYONE.
If your idea of rock is good-timey, happy and fun, avoid. To quote one of the group's most famous songs, "Sick and dirty" is a good way to describe The Velvet Underground and Nico. Themes of choice include kinky sex, drug abuse and murder. Not exactly the Monkees.

5-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse of Lane Staley's world.
Despite popular opinion, neither Nirvana nor Pearl Jam were the best band to emerge from the early-nineties Seattle music scene. That was Soundgarden.Likewise, neither of those bands produced the era's best album. That was Dirt.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pure classic from the early 90's
Of the four great bands from Seattle, Alice In Chains are easily the darkest and heaviest. Though they have been lumped into the "grunge" category, the band actually formed in the mid-80's, releasing their debut album a year before Nirvana's Nevermind. Without getting into unnecessary comparisons between the two bands, upon Nevermind's significant breakthrough in early 90's music, Alice In Chains' label also started to promote them as an alternative band. That said, musically they are worlds apart. While carrying some of the genre's characteristics, Alice In Chains encompasses deeper musical thought, utilising heavy fretwork and delving fearlessly into the path paved by Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin in the 1970's. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Empty Eyes and Dead-End Stares"
I first heard Alice in Chains 'Dirt' on a compilation album called 'Dad, I Blew Up America' that featured two tracks off 'Dirt', namely 'Rooster' and 'Hate to Feel'. It was 'Hate to Feel' that I particularly liked a lot so the album was a natural purchase and I can tell you I was not disappointed. Alice in Chains' always sounded like a mix of Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid' and Led Zeppelin's I & II and it's on 'Dirt' that they achieved that to near perfection while still sounding original. They should have called this their 'Greatest Hits' because all the songs are classics on Dirt. The thing that makes this record great is it's simplicity, there's nothing ostentatious or vague about it musically or lyrically. Musically it's rhythmically solid, bare, sometimes discordant and atonal and lyrically, direct, poignant and somewhat gleeful in it's delivery. The theme running through the record for the most part is that of drug taking, in particular Heroin, and it's in this quagmire that the dirt is delivered. 'Dirt' spoke on behalf of Generation X when it scaled the charts in 1992 helped along by the success of Nirvana and Soundgarden that swept away the glut of rubbish that clogged the rock charts before it. The early nineties was for a brief spell an exciting time for rock and say what you like about the so-called 'grunge scene' it produced its fair share of what will become classic records and it's undeniable that 'Dirt' was instrumental in building on the rock legacy for generations to come. It's an excellent album and a worthy addition to any collection, buy it if you don't already own it. ... Read more

I really enjoyed it. It had the songs I listened to in high school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only the first 15?
I find it strange that some people only got the first 15 of the 18 tracks. I only bought "The Buzz" (not Non Stop 90's Rock) and I got all 18 tracks. I would have been fine without the last three, anyway.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome!
If you were in the 90s with me and remember a lot of these songs you will love this CD! It has everything you want plus more. With the awsome songs like far behind by candle box and closing time by semisonic, its a great CD to relax to or drive fast and blaring the radio. If you love 90s rock, you will love this CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I am thoroughly enjoying this CD, every song on it. [You know how after you've listened to a CD several times, there are songs you eventually want to fast forward through?not so with this CD.]
5-0 out of 5 stars Jason - I Know!
I've always loved this album. I always liked how Lucinda says what she feels, plainly and sweetly. I've never cared for new country; but Loretta, George, Hank (sr.) were always heroes of mine.
5-0 out of 5 stars An unrelenting masterpiece
Lucinda Williams is, in my opinion, the preeminent bard of loss and longing."Car Wheels On A Gravel Road," as others have said, takes you deep into the experience of loss and grief just like the best fiction does, or even like the actual experience of grief itself. The album is a milestone in American music which will probably never be topped by Williams or anyone else--and that's ok, because it would be nearly impossible to do so.It is an equal with the greatest work of Dylan, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson, the Carter Family, etc.It will be remembered and listened to 100 years from now.

Take one part Ramones, one part Buzzcocks, and one part Husker Du, and you've got the basic foundation of Green Day, a punky, witty, melodic San Francisco Bay area trio who became overnight stars in 1994 when this album, their third overall release and major label debut, catapulted them to the top of the pop charts. Led by guitarist/vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong and their secret weapon, powerhouse drummer Tre Cool, Green Day put '70s and '80s punk in a compact '90s package with songs like "Longview," "Basket Case," "Pulling Teeth," and the hit semi-ballad, "When I Come Around." One the few modern alternative rock bands with a bona fide sense of humor. Read more

Green Day rocks! I love the old Green Day. My opinion is you aren't a true Green Day fan unless you've at least heard their old stuff. It's so true. THIS IS A VERY GOOD CD. GET IT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Biased by Influence
Let's get some things straight before we start, yes?First off, I was in high school when the record released.I bought it, ostensibly to give as a birthday present to somebody else I knew, but for complicated reasons ended up keeping it.Over the course of the next few years, it was one of the few records I actually owned (hard to get those buggers when you don't have, you know, an income), so it got played a lot.Quite a lot.
1-0 out of 5 stars "Dookie..." an apt title
Let me put it like this: there is not ONE good song on this album. Not only that, but it's a collection of fifteen crappy songs, especially Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case and When I Come Around, all of which I have heard a million too many times on the radio. This isn't a punk album, the Clash and the Sex Pistols are punk. It sucks. That's the short and long of it. Get the Velvet Underground's third, self-titled album if you want an example of an amazing album. Get something by the Stooges if you want good punk. Or the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Cream, Who, AC/DC, Crosby Stills & Nash, Neil Young, Bob Dylan... all are much better. But if you MUST have some alternative rock, either the Chili Peppers, R.E.M., U2 or Nirvana will do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Alt. Rock CD Ever
I have to admit, I am very sceptical of some music and when I first heard of the Goo Goo Dolls I thought what a sissy name and laughed. Wow was I wrong for thinking that. I love the Goo Goo Dolls and their music. Dizzy Up The Girl is my favorite GGD Cd. My 3 favorite songs are Dizzy Up The Girl, what a great fast paced song that keeps you moving through the whole song, Slide and Iris, which is my favorite song on the whole Cd. Very mellow track and it is very relaxing. Give this Cd a try and you will not be dissapointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
These guys are the worst. I wish they would crawl in a hole & never come out. One of the worst bands of our era!

4-0 out of 5 stars Goo Dizzy Ups
The Goo Goo Dolls finally released their breakthrough record: DIZZY UP THE GIRL in the fall of 1998. After struggling with writer's block, Johnny Rzeznik had been given a God-send with an oppurtunity to write a single for the film soundtrack: City of Angels. This event was what Rzeznik needed to get his writing flowing again, and his end product was phenomanal. For the band's first Mainstream record, their sound had taken on a significant change. The Goo Goo Dolls were far more pop oriented with a much lighter rock style than they had been performing on their first five records. The players had matured as musicians and were searching for a higher form of music with a lot more identifiable melody and harmony progressions. Rzeznik had taken a huge focous on his accoustic and clear tone guitar playing. His new skills were what had brought the Goo Goo Dolls their public stardom. The public responded dramaticlly to Rzeznik's guitar ballads and wanted more. Not all of the Goo Goo Dolls' originality is lost on this record. There are tracks where the band performs a heavier rock style than their most acclaimed singles. Robby Takac works to keep the band's original sound alive with his performances. Except, his end product are not what most of the public responded to. Its clear why; Takac's pieces are just not as well put together as Rzezniks and tend to be just "mindless rock." These pieces are what decreases the album's quality as a whole. Rzeznik's songs are what finally makes the Goo Goo Dolls stand out in their genre, where Takac's songs are just typical sounds to the rock scene. DIZZY UP THE GIRL is a great record for its aspect in being able to see the Goo Goo Dolls evolve into what they are now, and definately a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Are Not Alone
I bought this CD for "So Cold" and "Sooner or Later" which I had heard on the radio.I had only listened to these two songs on the CD until I took a road trip to Colorado. After listening to every song, I was extremely impressed with the sound of the whole album.I don't think I took the CD out of the player for the remainder of the trip.I really enjoy the hard rock sounds of the guitars and drums, mixed well with the harmony of the vocals. There is no way this CD could earn less than five stars from me.

3-0 out of 5 stars A step up, kind of
I rated the band's first album as 3 stars as well, but this album is a better kind of three stars.BB runs into many of the same problems here as they did on their debut; too many sound-alike tracks, minimal variation on guitar sound and quality, and the fact that BB really sounds like they're forcing their toughness. When they slow down on "Rain Song", they hit gold; the melody really carries the emotional pull of the song, and we see the band for what they really are. While a number of pounding tracks manage to be good by way of songwriting, I can't help but think they're trying to force themselves into a square when they're actually a circle. They have a more rounded personality that they should really let out more.

2-0 out of 5 stars just ok
I really loved Papercut Chronicles. The lyrics were deep, the instrumentals with the live band made the songs incredible. The cd was just really private and real... after listening to it you really felt like you had an idea about who the emcee was.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much Better!
I didn't really think much of the earlier Gym Class Heroes albums, mostly because they were too simple. The beats were bland and repetitive. Even with well written lyrics they just lacked luster. This time around I hear a complete revolution in their sound. It's not like the style changed much, they just gave you more on your plate when they served you. It seems they spent more time focusing on what could be done with their music once it had been established and it pays off big. Highlights: "The Queen And I,""Clothes Off," and "Scandalous Scholastics."

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
This album is a nice surprise from GCH after the success of The Papercut Chronicles. While more poppy than Chronicles was, School Children still delivers compelling lyrics and supreme production. With almost haunting melodies in "It's OK, But Just This Once" against the addictive bass lines and choruses in "Shoot Down the Stars" and "7 Weeks", School Children delivers what GCH fans are expecting--great production backing focused and sometimes even moving vocals by Travis McCoy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Whether you like it or not, this is a classic.
The CliffsNotes version - ragtag Seattle band Nirvana unleash an album with a naked baby on the cover to the public, a video does well on MTV and suddenly there's a new style of mainstream music to exploit. Before you can say "I'm gonna break my rusty cage," a slew of imitators immediately came in the wake of the initial hoopla. The biggest band of this first wave of the newly-coined "grunge" movement was Stone Temple Pilots.
4-0 out of 5 stars The "Core" of this band
Amidst a sea of grunge and alternative music, STP rocked. Some of the best known-hits were "Wicked Garden" "Plush" and "Sex Type Thing."On the lighter side of things, "Creep" got it's share of well-deserved air-play too."Sin" "Naked Sunday" & "Crackerman" were some others with a driving rock sound.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the great albums of the grunge era (4.5 stars)
The Stone Temple Pilots released their debut album, Core, in 1992. At the time, the grunge movement was in full swing as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains had become superstars. Some fans and critics were taking a lot of shots at Stone Temple Pilots, claiming that the band had jumped on the grunge bandwagon. However, many more music fans ignored these accusations and concentrated on the music. Although the band's sound certainly resembled their grunge counterparts, Stone Temple Pilots' songs had more hooks and were catchier. The fact that many of the songs still get regular airplay on modern rock stations is a testament to the strength of their music. Although future albums such as Purple and Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop respectively would show the band expanding their musical horizons, Core remains their most enduring and consistent album with a few songs becoming staples of the grunge genre.

2-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a slump in both sound and a rejection of their old fans
When I first heard 3 doors down 'the better life' I thought it was an amazing cd and still do to this day. When I heard a new album was coming I was so excited but when I got it and played it my heart sank. This ladies and gentlemen is a sellout cd, gone is their old heavier sound and lyrics and thus they made this cd more mainstream with tracks like 'here without you.' This cd would be good to listen to if you were VERY VERY VERY depressed. Its really hard to listen to this cd all the way through without wanting to turn it off. Still theres a few good tracks on here like 'When Im Gone' Going down in flames, Sarah Yellin and changes. I think if your around 16 years old or younger and are going through that omg Im so lost wtf someone help me then youll like this otherwise stay clear, better yet pick up the better life and listen to 3dd at their best and heaviest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome CD
I love 3 doors down anyways, but this one is the best i've heard yet! Great music.

5-0 out of 5 stars At least the liner notes and lyrics are spelled correctly...
For good decent low brow rock this album cannot be beat. I don't over analyze it to death I just like to listen to it. Thier, oops, Their only failing is singing with that darned stupid southern drawl at those nascar races... Oh well it does sound great in my truck driving around South Carolina. It is unbelievable, I mean, unbelievably great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing listen
I bought this album at the same time I bought Yoshimi by the Flaming Lips at a time when I was becoming very discouraged by modern bands and modern music in general. Jaded by those bands that sounded great upon first listen but lose their appeal after only a few spins (The Strokes being the most obvious), I decided to take a chance on these two albums I heard about from Paste Magazine (a great music mag!) and was absolutely blown away. Yoshimi was the favorite, right off the bat, but Z by MMJ just stayed with me. I would plug it in every week, listen, and hear something amazing I didn't hear before. Some new guitar solo, or subtle drum break. And so I started listening twice a week and now I listen to MMJ (not just Z, but other albums as well) at least once a day! Their music is something that has affected me on a deeper level, something that has not happened for almost 16 years (since Primal Scream's Screamadelica in 1991). Start here, then do yourself a favor and delve deeper into their back catalog and buy them all. Including their early version compilation albums which are worth the price due to the inclusion of their cover version of EJ's "Rocket Man", among others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album, it's one of their best!
I love this album and still listen to it frequently, MMJ is a great band because their music is always changing and every new album from them is like opening a new gift for Christmas.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Album of 2005!
Not much to say about this except it is the best album released in 2005! While different from previous MMJ releases, this album proves to contain the most well-crafted songs and shows the band matured, but still weird. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Derivative Band That Actually Rocks
Despite the dumb name (and it is dumb) this band is unique in that you can hear their influences as clear as a bell, but you don't care because the music is so good. They cycle through the influences on nearly every song: Stone Temple Pilots, Ozzy Osbourne, Tool, Alice In Chains, Pantera, etc... But in the end, the band rocks. The lyrics are perhaps the only weak point, but these guys seem very young, giving them plenty of time to mature. The songs are fast and quick and the lead singer, who sounds like an odd cross bewteen Scott Weiland (STP) and John Popper (Blues Traveler), runs through a range of screams and shouts with a variety of emotions. He's not a great singer, but he gets the job done. The powerful drumming and endless onslaught of growling guitar riffs is what ultimately propels this band along. They sound like what Kid Rock would sound like if he had a real band. Comparisons to Chevelle, Nickelback, and Stone Temple Pilots are fair, but this is a good band in its own right.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as these reviews lead you to believe
I heard Lonely Train and was intrigued. Then I read all the 5 star reviews and comparisons to Led Zeppelin and all the other greats so I thought this was a can't miss. This does not live up to all that hype. These guys are like Nickelback with better guitars.Granted there are some nice riffs on here and it's good to hear a guitar solo now and then but this band is nothing special. They are just typical radio rock.Don't buy all the comparisons to Skynyrd, Zeppelin, Sabbath or any of that. These guys are more like a southern rock version of Nickelback or Creed or Saliva ... something like that. But if that's what you're into you'll probably love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best straight rock of 2006
Now, this isn't really my prefered type of music. But I know good when I hear it. As for it sounds like Skynard? Nope. I'll say this: take Nickelback, add balls, add a splash of Black Crowes and another dash of Southern Rock, and finally a huge helping of your favorite 80s metal band (Priest/Sabbath). For a debut CD, this thing is fantastic. I hope they're around for a long time. This CD could use another slow song or at least a change of tempo mid-CD. I love it starting out with Rain Wizard which will really take you back and then end the CD with Rollin On which will evoke modern day hard rock. Great CD and they'll only get better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So Original
This is quintessential Neko Case. This cd says it all. The singing is so sensual. The songs have a deep sense of longing burried deep within. The whole cd really is over the top. "I Wish I Was the Moon" is deffinately a must have. This cd either stays at the top of my case or in my player at all times. What more can I say except if you don't buy this album you aren't truly living.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Could Blacklist This Backlist?
Although I've read her work typified as "alt-country," a better way to describe Neko Case on BLACKLISTED is "country noir." Her beautiful voice drifts over rootsy, poignant, and even desolate arrangements with a haunting quality. And those lyrics... she is just a very talented woman.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'll crash my boat happily on the rocks for her siren song
To limit Neko Case to the category of country or alt-country would, I think, miss the point. Her work with New Pornographers should indicate that her musical interests and influences are more wide-ranging and, consequently, deserving of broader attention.Which is not to diminish the quality of the country-inflections of this album, for they are country in mood and timbre, not in artifice or image. The result is one of authenticity--personal authenticity, that is, not an "authentic" recasting of something someone else has done before.
