4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly excellent
I probably shouldn't say "surpringly" excellent we are after all talking about Sufjan, but when this was released I was hesitant to buy it because I thought of a B-sides and outtakes album as not up to par with regular releases. I thought that if this didn't make the album then it must not be as good, that's pretty much the case with most other artists. Artists other than Sufjan. This album is really amazing and is absolutely level with his other releases. It should be looked at as an album and not a collection of outtakes . I highly recommend this to all Sufjan fans especially those who love "Illinoise"

4-0 out of 5 stars He's an avalanche
Sufjan Stevens has reached a new level in his musical career -- the point where every shred of his art is of interest.
5-0 out of 5 stars Still better than anything else out there.
This album takes a handfull of listens before it starts to sink in and get comfortable. Some of the songs seem a little caotic and over the top at first, but when you start to understand the world that Sufjan creates through out the album, you realise that he is, in fact, capable of putting out better and better music. There is nothing out there better than Sufjan, other than lesser substitutes that only provide a brief brake from listening to Sufjan continuosly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mike Patton does quality porn music?
Am trying to work out how to describe this record but I can't think of anything better than a genre based around how the soundtrack would be on a quality porn movie, not that I'd know, but it's sort of like a very slick, sexy grindy sound which is really seductive.Might sound silly but what he has acheived is a loungey sort of feel, with a very sexy sort of sound - lots of huge bass and beat noises and so on.Definitely not the sort of thing radio will flock to, but not a revisiting of the rock or heavier stuff he's done with FNM or Tomahawk etc...
4-0 out of 5 stars Mike Patton excellence
Definately some of Mike Patton's best work this side of Epic.I highly recommend this CD to those that like mixed work CD's and explorations of technique and electronica. For the price this CD really can't be beat.

4-0 out of 5 stars valid
One of my favorite films of all time is Peeping Tom. Michael Powell is one of the great directors of all time. It's funny that the closely named Mike Patton has used this name for his new project. It is a big collaboration with many people that Patton has never met. The first track "Five Seconds" is much like Faith No More and features Odd Nosdam. Other people who show up on this are Dan The Automator and Amon Tobin. I am a big Kool Keith fan. So the song "Getaway" reminds me a little of Black Elvis and Prodigy. Good stuff. I also like "Kill The DJ" with Massive Attack. It's a little like some stuff off of 100th Window. Other people who show up on this are Kid Koala, Bebel Gilberto, and even Norah Jones. It's a sort of record that shows who are Patton's friends. It's all pretty good, but unlike some of his recent material. It's a valid statement. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Fiona Apple, brooding, brainy belter and capital-A artist of near forbidding depth, begins her much gossiped-over third CD on a lark. The title track, one of two songs produced by Jon Brion before the label dispute that prompted hip-hop producer Mike Elizondo (50 Cent, Eminem) to step in, sounds like a Judy Garland number slathered with irony or something Rufus Wainwright might have had a hand in--strings soar, beats bump around skittishly, and notes require a ladder. But playful as it is, by the time the chorus kicks in it's clear why the world has missed Fiona Apple so much. Young female artists who have stepped into the spotlight since she fled it six years ago-- Nellie McKay andJoss Stone spring to mind for their cleverness and heat, respectively--seem slight in comparison. With every track ticked off, in fact, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's open our minds...
I have never heard the unofficial version of this CD, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I will say that I've been a Fiona fan since I was in high school. I loved "When the Pawn..." so much that I listened to it from 10th grade until I was a Junior in college. Her songs were real and they were something I could relate to as an adolescent entering early adulthood. This CD is much different from her previous works, but I enjoy it all the same.
4-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary
I was a casual fan of Ms. Apple with a couple of Tidal tracks on my Ipod. I grabbed EM in the public library last week & I have listened to it everyday since. Outstanding depth, beauty, darkness, and light all over this CD. I am not aware of another voice that even compares. I have played "Red Red Red" a dozen times today. What a haunting song.

4-0 out of 5 stars A new swagger
Confident and sparky, 'The Life Pursuit' is the sound of a less self-conscious band hitting their stride on their 7th album. Their sound continues to expand, taking in Motown and even funk in addition to their standard folk, 80s indie and 60s guitar-pop influences. There's nothing here as revolutionary as between-album single 'Your Cover's Blown', which saw the long-overdue union of 60s pop and punk-funk, but 'We Are The Sleepyheads' is a leaner and less epic version of that same union, and there's a touch of bluesy funk to 'The Blues are Still Blue', and a swaggering glam to 'White Collar Boy'. 'Another Sunny Day' and 'Dress Up In You' are classic Belle & Seb, harking back to their best upbeat and downbeat tracks respectively; the latter is one of their most gorgeous since 'Sleep The Clock Around'. Most surprising is the 'Song For Sunshine', which features a Stevie Wonder-esque synthesiser and is white-boy soul of the first order. But the best track is the joyous 'Sukie In The Graveyard', which is brilliantly playful, with amusing lyrics a driving sound that sparkles with major-key pop melody. Though perhaps not their very best album, 'The Life Pursuit' is certainly Belle & Sebastian's most expansive and confident to date, despite slightly thin production after Trevor Horn's huge addition to 'Dear Catastrophe Waitress'. For those that have always wanted to hear them do the upbeat pop thing more, this will be perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous!
I'm a long time Belle & Sebastian fan, I've been listening to them since Tigermilk, and I just cannot get enough of this album. It's my favourite album of theirs to date, and it's also the very best album I've heard so far this year.It takes all the elements that have made this band so wonderful over the years: Witty lyrics, Bacharach-esque melodies; but there's a new sense of humor and fun, and even some funky 70's glam rock swagger to boot. It's the most fun album that I've heard in ages, and it just makes me want to get up and sing and dance.Amazing that a band so known for it's retro mod sound has come out with one of the freshest sounding albums of the year.

4-0 out of 5 stars snobyyyyy
first of all this album is good, its really good actually, its Belle and sebastian good.i can say that it is my opinon that this is not their greatest album, but its smart and funny and poppy and catchy (everything i love about this band).so there that is, this album is good

5-0 out of 5 stars In All Honesty, One Of The Best Albums I Have Ever Listened To
Us and Them has been in constant rotation in my CD player since I first picked it up a few months ago.No matter how many times one listens to it, it never gets old.Solid songwriting and musicianship, paired with Brent Smith's incredible vocals make for an unforgettable album.Every song, from the 3rd single "Heroes" to the ballad "Someday", is executed perfectly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Just as good as the first...if not better
I was a big fan of the first album, and like most people here I think this is an even better example of their sound. I am currently listenting to it for the umpteenth time and have not gotten sick of it yet. Only other album I can say that about is 10 by Pearl Jam. Very good company in my eyes.
5-0 out of 5 stars The new Shinedown
Just like others have reviewed, you can't expect to hear a "Leave a Whisper II."Mostly because Shinedown is the kind of band who makes good music, and good music is not the same as in the last track or as in the last CD.If you think about it, anybody's favorite CD is a favorite because each track has a different personality and chemestry.CDs that sound the same are always boring and lose people's interest immediately. So why would anybody want to hear something that sounds just like their first CD?

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is like a sunny day
I am a latecomer to Sonic Youth, having never been a fan of noise pop, art pop, or atonal experimental rock. However, as a fan of the Stooges, American Analog Set, Low, QOTSA and many things in between, Rather Ripped fits right into my groove. It's fuzzy, raw, sometimes spare, guitar-oriented, and melodic. Kim Gordon manages to sing on key and Moore, oddly, sounds like a youth Bruce Springsteen sometimes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I own Daydream Nation, Goo, and Rather Ripped. Of the three, I probably skip the most tracks on this one ("sleepin' around" and "rats" usually, "what a waste" and "rapture" occasionally). There are some really really good tracks that are classic sonic youth too though. "Jams run free", "Incinerate", "Reena", and "Pink Steam" are all great, with "jams run free" probably being my most played. If you want to get into sonic youth, this is a good start but I'd recommend "Daydream Nation" as a starting point - it may take a few more listens but overall "Daydream" is their best work.

5-0 out of 5 stars a late-career triumph
The beauty of this album doesn't immediately jump out at you, but grows with time - the streamlined serenity of tracks like "Reena" or "Do You Believe in Rapture?", the noisy "Rats" and "What a Waste" - and the crescendoing climactic glory of "Pink Steam."

Editorial Review

With the musical maturity of this sophomore release, Ollabelle extend their accomplishment of forging a singular style bridging folk and art songs from the talents of five singer-songwriters. While Amy Helm, daughter of the Band's Levon, boasts the highest-profile lineage, the two-woman, three-man band has the balance of a democratic collective, combining deep roots with soaring, sophisticated harmonies. "Troubles of the World," an elegiac reading of the traditional "Riverside," the call-and-response of "Gone Today," and the closing "Last Lullaby" reflect the spiritual underpinnings of the quintet's signature sound, but the stylistic range extends from the Caribbean lilt of the opening "See Line Woman" and the stately country waltz of "Heaven's Pearls" to the delta blues of "Fall Back" and the Celtic balladry of "Dream the Fall." Except for the lovesick "Blue Northern Lights" and the bittersweet delicacy of "Everything Is Broken," it's difficult to distinguish the band's arrangements of traditional material from the original songwriting that dominates. Larry Campbell, formerly of Bob Dylan's band, provides superb production and multi-instrumental support. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It took long to release, but it was worth the wait
I discoved this eclectic band in '04 with their first CD and deeply enjoyed it.I also caught a live show in Detroit and was very pleased to find that they are not just a result of studio magic (though the production only both CD's is to be complimented).
5-0 out of 5 stars Ollabelle and their Harmonies
I just discovered this group on XM Radio's The Bob Edwards Show. Does anyone hear a resemblance to Crosby, Stills and Nash with respect to some of the harmonies? Initially I struggled to figure out what I was reminded of in Ollabelle's style. The formal review posted on Amazon gave me the answer: Delaney and Bonnie. I have a vinyl recording of Motel Shots with Delaney and Bonnie along with Leon Russell that makes me want to compare the two bands. This is a Two Thumbs Up album that I will purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Sophomore Release!!!!
Ollabelle has done it again. I truly enjoyed their first record because of its honesty and respect for the past but this record takes the band to a whole different level. Although very eclectic in nature, this quality works for, and not against the record as a whole. So many well crafted tunes on this one. Everything from the subtle anti-war protest sentiments of "Riverside" and "Dream the Fall" to the heartbroken "Blue Northern Lights and Northern Star" resonate with a beauty and restraint that is rare in modern record making. I can't recommend this one enough. Very happy that real music is still alive. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars why is the only good rap in existence being bashed!?
I thought rap was a completely hopeless genre capable of no appeal to me until the Black-Eyed Peas came out with this CD, full of awesome songs like Hey Mama, Hands Up, Let's Get Started, Where Is The Love, Shut Up etc. Then of course there are the Beastie Boys which I like also, but other than that I hate all rap. I find it hilarious that there are people out there who would believe that 50 Cent has talent. Blasting out expletives right and left on top of a beat you could make with a Casio doesn't hardly count as music if you ask me. Anyway, I find this CD very refreshing, and it is an important headstone in the continuous timeline of music. If you want good rap, look no further than this CD by the B-E Peas and their latest: Monkey Business, both are quite good. Also the Beastie Boys are even better, so check them out. Otherwise rap is an awful genre. THis might even be counted as hiphop too, so rap is made even worse by that fact.
1-0 out of 5 stars As bad as the food its name is derived from
Black Eyed Peas have been making a name for themselves by selling to the non-intellectuals, with dumbed down lyrics, lame beats, and annoying vocals. Only in America is this the formula for certain success. Just when you thought that no band could cause an aneurysm more than Gwen Stefani, it looks like Black Eyed Peas has become number one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meteora
First off, I have to say that even though I gave this album 5 stars, Linkin Park will never be able to outdo themselves on Hybrid Theory. Every song on Hybrid Theory was well wrote, played and sung. Although Meteora is a VERY good CD and well worth the money, the songs just aren't as catchy as the ones on this album.
4-0 out of 5 stars Meteora In the Park
Fans of this rap grudge techno band were left waiting three years for new studio material to hit the airwaves. Linkin Park had released a remix album, but nothing new had been produced for thirty six months. METEORA delivered what the fans were demanding; more of the rap techno grudge style that had become imensely popular over a three year period. This time around, Linkin Park performed harder in their rock part, had more melodic melodies and harmonies, and delivered gritty rhymes. The band is built of the rhythm section and becomes incredibly original with the performance of the keyboardist counterpointing the vocalists. The product is definately some of Linkin Park's best work and leaves the listener wanting more. METEORA marked an outstanding return of Linkin Park and keeping them the masters in the genre the perform in. The record landed the group a spot to the soundtrack of S.W.A.T. The record is just so well put together and performed. Sadly, once again, its been three years since the band has released any new studio material and not just remixes. METEORA is a great album and one to add to the collection of music fans.

Emotionally over-the-top pop extravaganzas like the string-swelling "Tonight Tonight," the Metallica-influenced alternative rock of "Zero," the techno via new wave of "1979"--the 28 songs on this swell two-disc album are as eclectic as their themes are epic and ambitious. Billy Corgan's thin whine isn't much of an instrument, but he makes the most of it by writing smart songs that take emotional chances that more-typical alt rockers would deem uncool. Pessimistic and feeling trapped but still wanting to believe in love, in a future, in something--this is the sound of Gen X at the millennium, with all the self-indulgence and power that would suggest. My first opportunity to listen to Josh Ritter came on the radio. When I heard his first song it took me a while to catch onto his style. It didn't take long before I was addicted.I soon bought his cd and was completley impressed.Josh is a trully outstanding musician that is well beyond his years. His lyrics are deep almost to deep.I had a friend walk in when I was playing the cd and their first thought was "I haven't heard this Dylan song."To compare maybe a little premature.Although I feel we need more music like this.I will be sharing these great songs with many of my friends.

It’s likely that a decade after its debut record this band now has fans who might ask, "You mean Dave Grohl was in a band before the Foo Fighters?" But they, or any Foo followers who pine for the increasingly refined vocals and polished pop-punk uniformity of the first four albums, will swallow this one whole--or at least half. For as much as vocalist/bandleader Grohl and Co. mix a similar concoction on the 20-song double CD, they manage to agitate the formula ever so slightly. Disc one follows the Foo’s classic sonic blueprint: lip-smacking melodies and enigmatic lyrics, double-barrel guitars and drums that attack. But songs take a gentle turn on the second CD, showcasing Grohl’s underrated vocals amidst a high-energy ensemble of acoustic guitars, piano and mandolin (by studio guest John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin). Singing, not shouting, Grohl flips potential teen-rock anthems like "Miracle" and "Cold Day in the Sun" (with drummer Taylor Hawkins handling lead vocals) into impending adult-oriented radio staples and, 11 years after Nirvana, the Foo Fighters may finally have their triumph. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a CD
I recently bought this cd and after having it for a few weeks it just seems to get better and better. The second cd is much mellower than the first, but the songs are well written and just seem to grow on you. It is one of the best cds I've ever bought. You won't be disappointed.
3-0 out of 5 stars A heavily flawed masterpiece in need of more focus.
I remember my first kiss, where I was when Princess Di died, and the first time I heard the song that changed my life. I was sat in the car waiting for my big brother to give me a lift to my friends house, so I switched on the radio. Lucky enough to catch the end of `Everlong' by Foo Fighters. I'd lived and breathed rock music for a good few years before that moment, hell, I was even at this point in a band. But somehow I'd managed to completely miss the story so far, of Dave Grohl and the ever changing line up of the fighters of Foo. I made my big bro buy me the album for my birthday. Pretty soon I was an obsessive fan. It was often an in joke between me and friends as to just how obsessed I was. Awaiting every album with Swiss quartz precision. It became a military manoeuvre to get a new release before every human possible. (Now due to downloading this has become impossible.) but when I heard that the Foo Fighters were planning a double album- Yes- a double album, my heart skipped.
5-0 out of 5 stars Searching for the roots!
Nowadays, Foo Fighters occupies a high status in the reduced scope of rock bands with innovative proposals. Their sound has turned more solid, with major emphasis in the discursive lines, and with the presence of a granitic expression where the riffs and beats ride together without free obstreperous, but in search of the wise balance between lyrics and the atmosphere of the heavy rock.

Editorial Review

Like G. Love, Citizen Cope is a musical mixologist, fusing sluggish hip-hop beats with mellow piano melodies and new-school blues with easy-listening pop. On his debut album, Cope--née Clarence Greenwood, former DJ for the rap group Basehead--sounds at times like both a younger, drawling Sting and a folksy Wyclef Jean as he sings over slow, loose, loungy instrumentals. Though his music is a patchwork of breezy styles, Cope's lyrics tackle some serious subjects. "Contact" confronts the hypocrisy of police profiling, while "200,000 (in Counterfeit 50 Dollar Bills)" details the work of a shifty middle-aged hustler. Cope tells stories about crazy women ("Mistaken ID") and lost souls with short fuses ("Appetite (for Lightin' Dynamite)"), and even fantasizes about the musician's fight with the stay pure ("Salvation"), tucking a gritty street realism between the rosy rhythms dancing through these 13 songs. 5-0 out of 5 stars refreshing
I enjoy pop music as much as the next person. And I enjoy many music styles (From Eminem and Big pun to My chemical romance and Foo fighters.)I heard "Son's gonna rise" in a pontiac commercial and it stuck in my head til it got to the point where I had to find out who sang that song.So after some searching I found out his name and I was happy with the results. He is a change of pace from other acts and whatever "type" of music he makes it sounds good and he has lyrical content behind the the catchy beats and easy, "marbles in the mouth" delivery.

5-0 out of 5 stars !!! ILL EAT YOUR SOUL.... IF COPE DOESNT GET IT FIRST !!!
THIS GUY MAKES ME HAPPY. I PUT IN THIS CD, OR HIS SECOND DISK, AND ITS INSTABLISS. I LOVE EVERY SONG, EVERY PAINFULLY TRUTHFULL LYRIC, AND EVERY BEAUTIFUL MOMENT THIS MAN CREATES ON THIS ALBUM. NEVER SINCE MY FIRST TIME HEARING BLACK SAILS HAVE I CONNECTED TO AN ARTIST AND FELT SO MUCH OF A CD I EXPECTED SO LITTLE FROM. TRUTH BE TOLD, I BOUGHT THIS CD BECAUSE HE LOOKED LIKE A SAMURAI ON THE COVER, BUT BELIEVE ME, THIS GUYS WAY SHARPER AND DEADLY THAN EVEN UMA HERSELF!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gritty, soulful, authentic music.
When I heard "Sideways" on Santana's "Shaman" CD, I was immediately mesmerized by Greenwood's subtle genius. I picked up a copy of "Cope" and was ecstatic to hear a fresh voice in music - not the same old 'top ten' that commercial radio dishes out. I told everyone who would listen to it to buy it. It is important to purchase the music of new artists, otherwise record companies think no one is interested in their music and won't promote, encourage, or support future recordings. Greenwood is an incredible artist that everyone should hear. His music is poetry. It is visceral and palpable - not to be ignored or dismissed. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Jeff Tweedy might carry the name recognition, but the rest of his band-on-the-side carries the mail on the fourth release from this Midwest all-star group. Though the Wilco leader teams with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris on a pair of nimble pop songs--the elegantly strummed "Listen Joe" and Kinks cover "Strangers"--it's Louris who's clearly at the head of the class with self-assured vocals ("Another Fine Day," "Think About Yourself"), lush harmonies ("Long Time Ago") and those unmistakable guitar leads ("Frying Pan Eyes"). Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy's obligatory rocker "Hurricane" is a high point, as is the album's lead track "You Make It Easy," which has Kraig Johnson warbling over a thumping piano lead and chunky fuzz guitar. But most welcome among the 15 songs are two contributions from Louris's fellow Jayhawk Marc Perlman: the refreshing "Corvette" and "Cure for This," a '60s-speckled pop song sung by Muni Loco, the wife of producer Paco Loco and the first female to grace a recording by Golden Smog. 1-0 out of 5 stars This one goes to the used CD store...
I had such high hopes for this one! However, after about a dozen tries, I cannot stand this music. It is uninteresting and possibly contains the worst songwriting and lyrics I have heard in years.Or maybe it's the schmultzy music that is so unbelievably weak.Whatever it is, it has no magic, no risk, no intelligence.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed
Maybe a few more listens will help, but this album reminds me in a lot of ways of Bubble Gum music from the late 60's.Way too cute. After eight years I expected a lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Subjectively speaking, a great disk. Period.
Okay, these user reviews are plagued by a high degree of subjectivity, though what is objective about music? Plainly speaking, after listening to AFD for four weeks now, I believe this disc is quite exceptional both in its variety, the quality of songwriting, and overall production. This was my first exposure to Golden Smog, but since I have explored (that is, purchased) "Weird Tales." I just don't have the same feeling toward that disc as I do for AFD. For the record, I am not overly enamored with Wilco's recorded output, and had no previous exposure to the Jayhawks. Another Fine Day, then, needs no antecedents to make a salient musical impression. I am not given to hyperbole, but can best sum up my feeling about AFD this way: I have already downloaded it in its entirety from ITMS, but am now ordering two physical discs from Amazon--one for my 24-year old son, and one just for posterity. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars dont even bother!!!!!!!!!!
try enya , or sarah brightman, yes they may be overated, but they are also THE BEST PERIOD..i hate to say it but emiliana needs to go back to iceland...try celine dion, dolores from the cranberries, italian singer laura paussini, eroz rammazotti, now thats creme!!!!!!!!! notEMILIANA TORRINI from iceland!!! in my opinion, she doesnt hit a single note, humm thats so sad..whats up with tuna fish????the only way i like my tuna is in a sandwich...not in a song.....lol

5-0 out of 5 stars Emiliana's Best So Far...
This is an amazing piece of work: haunting, memorable, captivating. It was in my CD for weeks last summer, couldn't take it out.I can't say the same for Fisherman's Wife though - if you're into acoustics, it will be right up your alley. It's definitely not in the same vein as LitToS.Try Daugher Darling or Baxter if you are looking for similar 'moods'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Iceland Rocks!
Love In The Time Of Science is an interesting mix of Emiliana Torrini's haunting voice and lyricism and Roland Orzabal's synth loving producing.I've heard Torrini compared to fellow Icelandic chanteuse, Bjork.Their voices sometimes do sound alike, but there the comparison ends.Where Bjork likes a heavy disco beat, Torrini prefers a jazzier, more ethereal sound and unexpected chord changes. Her cool, understated style is nicely complemented here by Orzabal's synthesizers.

Biting, sometimes base satire and humor populates this 21-cut comedy-rock debut from actor-musician Jack Black and his band, Tenacious D. Sort of like a trashier, more casual and less musical Beck, vocalist-guitarist Black and guitarist-vocalist Kyle Gass, with help from Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Redd Kross's Steve McDonald, and Page McConnell of Phish, deliver oddball musings that will appeal mostly to fans of the talented Black, whose earned a following thanks to memorable, frenetic turns in the films Read more
