5-0 out of 5 stars I want to live in a yellow house...
Have you ever been to a model home in a midwestern suburban housing development in the midst of being completed? These houses, constructed inside and out to look as though the most pleasant families in the world have been happily inhabiting them for years, create the kind of warmth and familiarity that one could be convinced can never exist elsewhere. Nowhere else except perhaps in the cascading strains of "Yellow House". Much comparison has been made between The Grizzlies and The Beach Boys and Animal Collective...but I hear bits of Eno at his most jilted, Vashti Bunyan at her most tender and even, yes, Aphex Twin at his most melodic. This is not experimental music for pop fans, nor is it pop for fans of experimental music. This is intriguing music at its most populist...tuneful, expansive, exposed and redemptive.

5-0 out of 5 stars best album in a decade
I both envy and feel sad for anyone who has not heard this album.I envy you because when you first listen to this album it will awaken beauty in your life and I feel sad that you have yet to expierence it yet.I haven't fallen for an album like this since flaming lips, yoshimi. you can sure find influences in thier music, I hear beatles and beach boys but there is also a very distinct quality, untapped in modern music, I can't place it,but it is haunting and this album stays with you for a long time. I work nights in badgad, its the soundtrack of my deployment and brings beauty to a horrid situation. thank you grizzly bear. its exilirating to say the least. Easily the best album of the year and in my top 5 of the decade so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars yes get it and see them live
a song excerpt may help you get the genre, but to really get IT you should hear the whole album, go for the whole ride, and listen to how the delicately balanced songs progress with geometric precision, then are broken with magnificent grizzly guitar tantrums and textural spasms that manage to be both futuristic and timeless.dont write them off as a freakfolk experiment. grizzly bear is a really great band. you must see them live too. ... Editorial Review

How do you condense 15 years of music down to 76 minutes? In the case of this survey of the second phase of R.E.M.'s career, the answer is: Exceptionally well. The dangling carrot for diehards is two new songs; the rapid fire "Bad Day" hurtles along like the kissing cousin of "It's the End of the World as We Know It," while "Animal" is anchored by a majestic drone reminiscent of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." In a surprising, but gratifying move, the rest of the program shortchanges the band's breakthrough, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good but what if.
With the remarkable IRS compilation just released, the question has to be presented...could this cd have been as good as that one is?
2-0 out of 5 stars Too much missing
No "Radio Song", "Turn You Inside Out", "Crush with Eyeliner", or, most shockingly, "Shiny Happy People"? Guess I'll wait a few more years for Warners to put out a better best of, like IRS just did of REM's early years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recurring Best
There are endless ways to assemble an R.E.M. anthology, let alone one from any other group, but this selection is marvelous. It is not only put together for their best work; it is arranged like an album. Many fans have lamented the absence of some big songs, like "Shiny, Happy, People," but this collection works well together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dirty and Mean with good guitar work
The whole album has that old southern blues rock grind, but it doesn't lose the Ray Wylie effect.Good guitar work throughout the entire album. As most of Ray Wylie's songs they are songs of blood, sweat and grease with a touch of sin and redemption. He and Gurf Morlix really sound like they are having fun playing together and that always makes an album special to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love at first note...
I can't get this cd out of my player. I love Austin music and Ray is the best. The swampy, sultry sound can take you away. The lyrics are amazing and certain lines stick in my head. Amazing stuff and a far cry from 'Up Against the Wall Redneck Mothers' although I like that too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Middle-of-the-night music, fuel for bonfires, dice, and showdowns
Ray Wylie Hubbard's "Snake Farm" is one evil, growling monster of a record, a finely focused muscular effort that effuses grit, malice, and funk. The sound ripples with thick, raw grooves that compliment the subject matter: the devil, women, redemption and damnation, hexes, and guitars. Clearly, this stuff is middle-of-the-night music, fuel for bonfires, dice, and showdowns.

Editorial Review

The fifth proper album by the Chicago-based roots-loving group is their slowest, weirdest, and best. Some of these hazy songs are pretty little pop jams, while others are more experimental things stitched together haphazardly, all the wires showing. If you want to hear a group that "pushes the envelope" while never forgoing the pleasure principle, Califone is exactly that. It's so nice to hear people who could so easily form a (really good) jam band forego such lucrative tendencies for more foreign, complex, and subtle pleasures. "Black Metal Valentine" and "A Chinese Actor" are stitched-together Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best album I've purchase in 2006
This album is AWESOME....This is one of the few cd's where I can listen to every track on the album...I love every song on the album....If you don't have this album, you must get it.....If you don't like ROCK, you will, after listening to this album....This is a must have.....TWO THUMBS UP...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best work yet
Personally my favorite Papa Roach album. The songs on this album are emotionally charged and make you move. ..To be Loved, Alive, I Devise my Own Demise, and Crash make you move while My Heart is a Fist, Roses on My Grave, and Time is Running Out aremore emotional. My favorite on the album is Roses on my Grave with it's mix of orchestra music and intensity. I can't listen to this CD without singing along with everything I have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now Officially the Best Metal Band in America
Mastodon's last album was an epic tale of man against whale. Leviathan was the story of Moby Dick told through heavy metal. Now they've returned with Blood Mountain, another epic tale, although this time nothing quite so literary. Lyrically, this is the story of a man's quest to get to the top of the mountain of the title. Along the way he encounters all sorts of creatures, such as a cysquatch (a one-eyed sasquatch), the birchmen, and the hunters of the sky (dragons). In the end, our hero ascends close to the peak, but does he accomplish his goal? It's tough to say, as the final song on the album, "Pendulous Skin," is an instrumental.
4-0 out of 5 stars My perspective...here it goes.
I am just going to lay it out flat..Leviathan was a HUGE success for Mastodon, one of the best metal albums I've heard in a very very long time, so it's hard for me not to compare Blood Mountain to that, but in order to get a real understanding of this album, that is the wrong thing to do! Before listening to Blood Mountain, clear your mind and ideas on what you think your going to expect, because this baby is a whole other cake. Honestly I don't think it lives up to Leviathan, that's a tough one to beat. BUT this album is totally different, when listening to this one I think wow, what were they smoking when they wrote this because man it is OUT THERE! How in the heck do they come up with this stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the New Classics!!!
I had heard a lot of hype about these guys; everything from "they are the saviors of metal" to "the best metal album of the decade", but their previous work never clicked with me. Not that they were necessarily bad, or anything, I just didn't really see what all of the fuss was about. Then comes "Blood Mountain". Basically, this is a band that you really have to let sink in and pay attention to what they are doing, and when it hits you, well.....it's awesome!!! One thing these guys do so well is manage to combine seemingly disparate styles and influences into a seamless whole that plays like old-school stoner rock (Nebula, Queens of the Stone Age)fused with elements of other diverse genres. During the album, you are subjected to many musical touchstones...album opener "The Wolf is Loose" sounds like vintage Clutch. The spacey and somnambulent "Sleeping Giant" is reminiscent of Pink Floyd meets Alice in Chains. "Cappillarian Crest" recalls Rush and King Crimson, along with progressive elements of some of the more modern prog-rock bands. They are also prone to experimentation, such as the bizarre-sounding, uber-distorted vocals on "Circle of the Cysquatch" and the endlessly creative guitar effects on the album. Combined with the grinding, heavy and at times quite technical and acrobatic guitar, this album is just a thick, dense slab of meat. Flyin' the devil horns, baby!!! ... Read more

Channeling the evocative storytelling of Laura Nyro and the soulful sexiness of Dusty Springfield, singer/songwriter Jenny Lewis skips all contemporary studio gimmickry to proffer a near-perfect solo debut. The front-woman for indie darlings Rilo Kiley breaks away from the songwriting democracy she shares with that band's co-leader Blake Sennett (also of the Elected), drawing inspiration from the crackling vinyl albums of her youth. And from the opening notes of "Run Devil Run," an acapella gospel hymn sung with the Watson Twins, through the note-for-note cover of the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle With Care" (with Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard), Lewis verifies this is her record. Her goose-bump voice can be as mournful as it is optimistic, but remains perpetually mesmerizing on Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Takes Me To Another Place
This record reminds me so much of the old records that my grandparents and parents used to play for me, and it reminded me of the folk pop albums i listen to today. It has so much soul.Just hearing Rise With Fists for the first time inspired me to buy not only this album but all of the Rilo Kiley albums.Jenny Lewis is truly inspired. This CD is simple and pure. And in its purity it takes you away, just like that music i have grown up to love and you don't see anymore in the days of my humps and sexyback.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the RISE!
If you haven't caught the video for the tune Rise up with Fists found on this cd...SEEK IT OUT!I caught the video on cable a couple times and immediately got into the tongue-in-cheek-this-isn't-country-well-ok-maybe-just-a-little-bit groove that Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins deliver so effortlessly. This cd accompanied me on a 1200 mile road trip and let's just say that I wanted to drive another 1000 miles just to listen to this cd.Heads Up! This cd came out months ago. What are you waiting for? ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Lyrics that speak to my grungy 70s folk craving
I was so suprized to hear the cute little red-head from "Troop Beverly Hills" put out this amazing album. The whole thing is a work of art. The lyrics are astoundingly soulful and leave you wanting to sing along. Jenny Lewis is like that girl down the street thats kinda depressed and scary, but totally hot and mysterious. She put a lot of heart into these songs and the lyrics are indicitive of some of her hollywood history, which is always nice of a former child star putting out an album to do, because we are all curious.

Stop the hating, folks! Just because the record doesn't match your preconceived notions of what you think the artist should do, doesn't mean you should lash out. Think of all the great musicians and other artists who were pilloried in their day for branching out in a new direction - only to have history vindicate their efforts! Think about it!

1-0 out of 5 stars pure rubbish...
I've been a fan of Dj Shadow from the very first album, and have followed him since then. I was super excited to see a new release from him, but upon seeing a few bad reviews, I had to investigate for myself. I sampled each track intently waiting for that wonderfully eclectic sound that Dj Shadow is so famous for... however I was never satisfied. This cd reminds me of a mix you might be handed after a rap concert. Its not worth going into analyzing each track, because its simply a waste of time. My only side 'comment' is that Dj Shadow has been in the game for so long that he probably tried something different, and it failed...just be patient and wait for the next (hopefully better) release.

4-0 out of 5 stars So it's not earlier Shadow...it's still a fine album
This album is quite a bit heavier with guest Hip Hop appearances than any of Shadow's previous work. I believe that explains all the negative reviews. Some Shadow fans simply aren't Hip Hop fans...sad as that may be (Q Tip was quite the nice suprise on this one). Those seeking the tripped out days of Entroducing won't find it here. That said, I still enjoy the hell out of this album. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that it didn't get me going quite enough for an immediate repeat listen; with the exception being Track 10...good stuff right there. My recommendation, take a sample listen to the tracks. Too "Hip Hop" for you?....then walk on, but I doubt that'll be the case. ... Read more

Together for over a decade, Guster's new album is their fifth and it shows them having gained a certain breadth in their middle age (that's middle age in band years). Recorded in Nashville, they're now expanded to a quartet with multi-instrumentalist Joe Pisapia as a fulltime member adding a range ofmature sounds and textures (everything from lap steel guitar, banjo and dulcimer to trumpet). They've fashioned a work that's radio friendly without being cloy, largely because of the subtle unpredictability of the arrangements and the underlying songs. They move with ease from the dreamily hypnotic "Satellite" to the slashing guitars of "The New Underground." They're equally at home with high volume (the thunderous "the Beginning of the End") and low ("Empire State"). Ryan Miller's confident vocals lend an everyman friendliness to the set as a whole.Read more

Wonderful CD!I think Guster is a great band and this CD shows that they are still as talented as they were when they started.Like their other CDs, "Ganging Up on the Sun" is fun and the songs are brilliantly written as well as arranged.Bravo to another successful CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Really nice, light, sophisticated, fun lyrics
Somewhat unexpectedly I have really gotten into this CD. I started out with the 4th song on the CD which has a neat video that can be seen on YOUTUBE but then I found I really liked the inventiveness and fun of the other songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising!
I was pleasantly surprised by this album.Upon first listen, I was a bit put off, but upon repeated listens, I discovered that it was perhaps the most consistent of any Guster release to date.

Editorial Review

If its debut album 15 years ago made Pearl Jam apprehensive with success, the Seattle quintet better buckle in for a return to eminence. On its eighth studio release--and first since 2002--the band socks away the adventurous experimentation that dogged some of its most recent records to investigate a post-September 11, war-ravaged world overflowing with urgency and significance. "It's the same everyday in a hell manmade/What can be saved, and who will be left to hold her?" lead singer Eddie Vedder wonders in "World Wide Suicide," one of several contemptuous rants on the Bush administration. Yet the album's spark is more than political. Songs like "Life Wasted," "Comatose" and "Big Wave" embrace the garage-rock past, as guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard play off each other with the primal lucidity of a decade ago and drummer Matt Cameron, one of rock's best, adds raw backing vocals to Vedder's polished craft. But Pearl Jam also turns up some of its most harmonious works since "Daughter," including "Marker in the Sand," with its radio-ready chorus, the tuneful "Parachutes" paced by Gossard's divine strumming, and the burning narrative and Urge Overkill punch of "Umemployable." Finally Vedder pleads for a lover's return in "Come Back," a keyboard-soaked love song complete with a chilling Gossard solo. It's got a soulfulness that begs for Sam Cooke to sing it and an originality that shows that a vibrant and cocksure Pearl Jam is back in town--and ready to retake the world. Read more

Reviewgium - Volume I, issue IX
4-0 out of 5 stars PJ continues to be iconic and the top of their craft...
Pearl Jam has been misunderstood for so long. They keep popping out music and people say that you have to have an acquired taste for their music.Other people compare every record to "Ten."However, my belief is that each CD that they pop out is a vision of how they see things during that period and they try to be innovators in their business, which sometimes does not produce a radio friendly CD.However I do not recall any bad CDs and despite negative reviews of some past CDs Pearl Jam has the star power to sell out any venue on a moments notice despite their "lack of radio friendly" tracks. This CD is spectacular. As said by the catalog reviewers, they go back to basics with a garage band sound with hard guitar duets, bumping drums, thumping base and of course a voice that is unrivaled in that of Vedder. Each song is great, multi-layered, message sending and relevant.Whatever your political views are, and mine are not in sync with PJ, you have to love the art of their music. This is one of their best CDs.There are not many groups that can give you multi-layers within each song, usually its song and chorus, but PJ gives us more where it makes you feel like you are getting so much more from each song. There is no real experimenting on this CD what has been sited as a flaw on past CDs.I like every song, most are high energy, just a couple ballads and some of those turn from ballads into a full on attack as momentum builds within the song.I am especially fond of "Inside Job" as it is a complex song showcasing the talents of the entire band and their range as musicians.

4-0 out of 5 stars Album of the Year?
Pearl Jam, to me, have always been an interesting band to listen to. They became a household name with their smash debut album Ten and their sophomore album Vs. But ever since then, it seems like they've been shying away from the spotlight. It's not that they didn't have hits - as "Better Man", "Who You Are", "Last Kiss", and "Given to Fly" were all chart-climbers - but they are nonetheless significantly less famous than they used to be. Perhaps this gives them the room to try out many of the new things they have been with their albums. Nonetheless, as this album proves, Pearl Jam show that they can rock out now just as good as they used to, but with perhaps even more passion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love Chris Cornell's vocals
I have always loved Chris Cornell. I got his solo album Euphoria when it was first released due to my love of his prior work. Definitelya worthy purchase if you love his moody work! This CD sat in my collection for the last year or so because the first listen left me underwhelmed. However, I pulled it out and listened again, and it hit me. I love the CD. I am not sure why I let it sit so long, but now it is time to buy up the rest of this band's CDs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sort of a "blah" affair here
I should, by all means, like this band. I love Rage Against The Machine. I love Soundgarden. Therefore, combining the band from the former and the frontman from the latter, Audioslave should be a home run, right?
3-0 out of 5 stars Could this prog more than plod?
Want to hear big metal riffs with some guy wailing over them?Get your balls right here people.Would like you variety, artistry and a lack of annoying guitar solos?Shop elsewhere.I can enjoy this album for maybe 2 or 3 songs at a time.Any more than that and I get bored. Its a slow, deliberate album. You get the impression of a AC/DC release with song tempos all hanging around each other.Luckily, Cornell is screaming his head off.The lyrics are vague but personal. No high-minded musings of abstract gloominess on this one.Okay, well maybe a few.The band has some good riffs and groves but they seem to pull back -whatever that means.I can say that some parts of the album will get the hair on your neck saluting.I'd say about...4 instances of that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid effort, through and through
Nickelback follows up Silver Side Up with another catchy, angst-driven grunge disc. What's good is that the lyrical content is more varied with this effort. The one downer: "Someday" sounds virtually identical to "How you Remind Me" (tempo, guitars, drum parts, everything ... there's even a mash-up avaiable online where the two songs are played simultaneously and you really notice the similarities).
5-0 out of 5 stars Are you that dumb?
Whoever said this album isn't even worth a penny is the dumbest person ever.He (or she) asked a very stupid question.Where did the 90's go?There still back in the 90's!Every generation has it's own kind of music.Do you expect to hear Elvis on the popular radio stations anytime soon? No, because he is in the past and new music has come out.The 90's are called the 90's because they were played in the 90's!New music is and will forever be coming out and if your stuck in the 90's then don't turn on the damn radio because most of the stations will be playing music like this.So shut up about your favorite music because nobody cares what it is.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a load of dung....
When I first heard Nickelback about 7 or 8 years ago (The State), I thought they were decent, nothing great, but decent.I still think The State is an OK disc. But like most bands, once they sell out and find fame, the quality of the product goes down the tubes.Besides being musically bland, and never changing...the lyrics are just about as deep as a rain puddle after a drizzle."Figured you out" has to be the worst...any 8th grade dropout could write that, its just plain dumb, as well as vulgar.

It's understandable when artists want to grow their fan base in order to more easily make a living and also reach a larger group of listeners. The trick, of course, is how to do this without releasing artistically compromised records that, well, suck. L.A. underground vets J5 were almost a supergroup from the start, combining the formidable talents of the Unity and Rebels of Rhythm crews. If anyone deserves to move beyond the backpack clique, it's them (well, and Aceyalone). And while no one's going to condemn the band for pulling a Black Eyed Peas here, it's hard to imagine really listening to this album as much as its two predecessors, either. Take the lead single, "Work It Out": the jam has a smoove, down-tempo vibe that's nice enough, and the Dave Matthews vocal on the chorus is pretty excellent. But the lyrics--which deal with not only let's-get-back-together-baby material, but also vaguely PC hip-hop--never gel. It makes one yearn for the actual Daisy Age. There are a few outstanding tracks, but overall this is a hip-hop album that sounds as if it were written by a corporate committee--each song directed at a particular demographic--rather than a mini-manifesto crafted to get your fists pumping and/or your feet moving. Jurassic 5 - Feedback (Interscope, 2006)
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
As a (once) big Jurassic 5 fan, I couldn't believe how terrible this album was.The lyircs got old fast, the beats were boring and like another reviewer mentioned, I got sick of the whole "girl/getting over shyness" type of songs. This album reminded me of a no-name group that wants to get big fast so their label puts a whole bunch of big name stars on the album to gain more fans and radio play...NOT what I would expect from a solid group like J5 at all!
3-0 out of 5 stars Not The Best 'Feedback'....But Lyrics Hold It Together
Jurassic 5 consist of Akil, Zaakir, Mark 7even, DJ Nu-Mark, Chali 2na (Cut Chemist is reportedly no longer with the group in order to pursue solo aspirations). The crew has been rockin' on the hip-hop scene since 1999 with a signature sound that the crew's fan base has come to appreciate over the years.Put on Quality Control or Power In Numbers and you hear a unique intermingling of turntable wizardry, well thought lyrics, and synchronized choruses.Having four rapping emcees would normally complicate songs, but Jurassic 5 pulls it off every time. But with the musical influence of Cut Chemist missing from their latest album Feedback, the crew resorts to Dj Nu-Mark for a few tracks as well as other producers.Unfortunately for them, this proves to be almost disastrous for the project.

Editorial Review

The title of this album would seem a tad precious applied to the releases of the majority of Nashville musicians. But Guy Clark--song craftsman, guitar builder--has been doing such finely measured work for all of his storied career that "Workbench Songs" aptly sums up the pride and precision he brings to these 11 offerings. Joined by cowriters Darrell Scott, Rodney Crowell, Gary Nicholson, Lee Roy Parnell, and Verlon Thompson, Clark is at turns wry and poignant in chronicling human acts great and small. And, as usual with his albums, a number of these songs resonate long after first listen. "Walkin' Man," a Celtic-flavored demo recording which kicks off the set, pays homage to the pilgrims and searchers--Gandhi and Woody Guthrie--who had the courage to make their own path. "Out in the Parkin' Lot," the Darrell Scott collaboration which Clark recorded on 1997's live Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars latest from a national treasure
There may be better songwriters than Guy Clark-but you can count them on one hand with fingers left over. This disc has him co-writing with some of the best in Nashville-Gary Nicholson, Lee Roy Parnell, Steve Nelson, Ray Stephenson and old standbysRodney Crowell and Verlon Thompson. The result is a project that loses none of Guy's touch, but slightly broadens the musical palate. In addition, there is a greater emphasis on production, making the record sound more like a country record (in a good sense) than a bluegrass or folk record as some projects have sounded in the past.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent latest release
I've been a fan of Guy Clark since Jerry Jeff Walker first sang "LA Freeway" in the early 70s.His distinctive husky voice speaks of roadworn weariness, someone who's lived a long tough life.(And I suspect he sounded that way at 30...)
