Resembling at times a soft-sung Robert Plant, Buckley was an intuitive vocalist capable of dizzying arabesques and choir-boy sweetness. He is joined here by a tight band for 10 tracks highlighting his stylistic range--Pearl Jam bluesy on "Eternal Life," impossibly serene on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," art-school noisy on "So Real," Led Zep daring on "Mojo Pin." Unorthodox, this was the debut of '94. Read more

How else can you describe the combination of his beautiful voice and well written music?I can't add anything to the volumes that have been written about this album already. An album with well over 500 reviews that is holding a 4.5 star average must have something going for it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Born to Croon
Jeff Buckley sounds like what Marc Bolan would have sounded like if Bolan had taken Perry Como as his musical muse.Seriously, think about Marc Bolan trying to sound like a '50's crooner and you'll know what Jeff Buckley sounds like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius
Gone to soon. What would he have become we will never really know and we are not better off because of his untimely death. An artist with creative vision and the talent to back it up. There is so little of his original music available it is difficult to really understand were he was headed and were his creative would have eventually taken him. The multiple albums of his original music has captured his songs in different stages of develoment and arrangement such that no two versions are completely the same and document his development.

Editorial Review

The Goo Goo Dolls have long since traded the bracing, Replacements-lite abandon of their early days for an ethos of heart-on-their-sleeve emotionality wed to a solid heartland pop craftsmanship that's too easily been casually mislabeled. Superstar producer Glen Ballard (who shares many a writing credit here as well) pushes that latter sensibility to its logical extremes, ensuring a slick sonic experience that won't disappoint those who hitched themselves to the Dolls' wagon circa their mid '90s commercial breakthrough. But there remains a nagging sense that this is a band that isn't pushing itself very hard: even the hook-solid opening single "Stay With You" seems downright cautious. Coupled with Ballard's penchant for polish, Johnny Rzeznik's introspection on "Without You Here" hews close to the center line before Robbie Takac's "Listen" gives the album a much-needed jolt of energy. The album's featured cover, a faithful, contemporary AOR-friendly take on Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit," is emblematic of the Goo Goo Dolls fortunes here: They often seemed boxed in by a past that's not necessarily their own. 1-0 out of 5 stars Man... can you say brainwashed trash?
This is the most ovhyped paltry piece of corporate garbage that has been my displeasure to enter my ears. -_-This album is terrible... not much more to say then that. The muscianship is terrible, the lyrics are more cheesy than you'd believe possible.I mean come on with a title like Let Love In you can basically tell this is the epitimy of all sellout albums.About anything up to before A boy named Goo is great with ACTUAL LYRICS!!!Plus its not a snoozefest they all have great songs to listen to!Guess its bands like this that keep the greedy corporate machine running.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Goo Goo Dolls CD!!!
There are a lot of great songs on this CD...At first I only recognized the hits like "Better Days","Stay With You", and "Let Love In", but then as I listened to the other songs they kept growing on me, and now I can sing the words to all of them! One thing I really liked about this CD, and previous ones like Dizzy up The Girl, and Gutterflower, is that there are so many great songs on each CD. It really seems that Johnny and the boys have taken great care in making sure each song is great, not like some groups where 1 or 2 songs are potential hits, and the rest are filler. I highly recommend that you get this CD!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars What happened?
I will be honest here, I love the Goo Goo Dolls steming from the first album I bought, which was jed.I can understand to really make it in this business you need to be on the radio and the googs have done just that. They have metomorphed their music for the main stream. That part Im okay with, Ive actually enjoyed their previous mainstream albums. However with this one Im just plain dissapointed. It seems like Im listening to a 80's love ballards.Where is the power?Where is the rock? They are all mainly love ballards with no real power to them.I can really only enjoy the first couple of songs on the album and the rest just disgusts me.Even when the guitarist guy (ive forgotten his name) tries to have a go at a ballard its rediculous. He dosent have the voice to be singing those kinds of songs.I really feel they have lost their touch as a band. I am wondering what John was thinking when he wrote this album and put it together.Im really dissapointed. It way to lovey dovey and soft for me ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Uninspired .......... and boring
I just can't figure Beck out -- This album offers very little entertainment. You could always count on Beck for something different each time out--- but not with this album. The songs sound like tunes that were from previous sessions and just left of off earlier albums.
4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars - My Favorite Beck album
How you could not like this album is way beyond my comprehension.Beck absolutely rocks on this release. The comparisons to Odelay are hard to avoid because it is a fun, upbeat album full of "Beckisms"...goofy lyrics, gatchy grooves and ryhmes you can't get out of your head.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great album, but not Beck's best
Guero is definitely enjoyable to listen to, but it still doesn't match Odelay. I like pretty much every song on the album, but some of them are kind of boring to listen to. I don't know why, I just didn't enjoy this album as much as some of Beck's others. Here are my ratings for each song:

4-0 out of 5 stars BUY IT!!
Are the Red Hot Chili Peppers the best of the alternative-rock bands? This reviewer (who generally thinks alternative rock is an evil corporate piece of crap) says yes. And this is a great way to get into the group, containing all the big songs (Give It Away, Under the Bridge, Suck My Kiss, Breaking the Girl, Californiacation, Scar Tissue, Higher Ground), although there is one big mistake this album makes: WHERE IS THE ZEPHYR SONG? It sure as hell was a hit - in fact, it was a big one. And I loved it, unlike most other big rock hits of 2002. I also would've appreciated Aeroplane, as well as some of the older stuff (Johnny Kick a Hole in the Sky, True Men Don't Kill Coyotes, especially Knock Me Down). But I highly recommend this album, as well as the classic rock and funk that influenced the Chili Peppers.

4-0 out of 5 stars its chili peppers, so you know its good
however, its not what it could be. its missing some notable songs, including their biggest recent hit Can't Stop. it also has some fairly obscure 'hits' like Universally Speaking. however, it is a great album. although it may seem weird to consider the Red Hot Chili Peppers rock legends, they will be elligible for the rock and roll hall of fame in less than 3 years.

2-0 out of 5 stars Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Hits not so hot
Not the best compulation I would have come up with. Only had one or two songs on it that I liked. But oh well Its in my collection now. Maybe it will grow on me later. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Irish troubadour Damien Rice doesn't so much reinvent the folk genre on this lush, impossibly mature debut album as push its boundaries in several compelling musical directions at once--all the more remarkable considering the album was largely self-produced and home-recorded. His songs revolve around familiar, bittersweet concerns of life, love, and their attendant frustrations, but delivered with conspiratorial intimacy on melodic wings (like on the graceful "Cannonball") that Rice seems almost embarrassed to share. If there's anything like a template here, it's "The Blower's Daughter," the song that first attracted the interest/stewardship of film composer David Arnold (whose guest production provides "Amie" with expansive cinematic elegance) and became a massive Irish hit. His plaintive vocal, embroidered by the mournful solo cello of Vyvienne Long, is suddenly brightened by an instrumental flourish and Lisa Hannigan's vocals--before just as quickly wafting on the breeze. With touches that range from "Day in the Life"-styled string collages to the dizzy, exhilarating neo-operatic excesses of the 16-minute "Eskimo," Rice's musical palate here is as adventurous as his songs are grounded in emotional intimacy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Magical
This has to be one of the most beautiful CDs ever recorded. Damien's vocal range is vast; his musicianship excellent; but it's the crafting of songs at which he truly surpasses most artists. Haunting, sensitive, flowing, crashing...(If I have one criticism, it's the mixing levels - at times, his vocals are drowned. In concert, when he lets rip, you really feel the power of his vocals/music, which, unfortunately, doesn't come over quite as well on the album.) A truly magical album.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is amazing
This is one that sways the soul. Damien Rice's timing and melody just reach into your gut and extract every piece of love and sorrow that you ever felt.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most impossibly beautiful albums ever released
Although I knew "The Blower's Daughter" from the film CLOSER and "Delicate" from LOST, Damien Rice has until recently been unexplored territory for me.What I didn't know is that his album O is not a disc with only one or two great songs, but one of the most from-beginning-to-end brilliant albums of recent years.Vocally Rice reminds me of a lot of other performers.Jeff Buckley and Ryan Adams spring to mind, there is even something of the very young Leonard Cohen in the songs. But this album is more consistently brilliant than anything released by those singers. He isn't quite the singer that Jeff Buckley was (but then who is?), but he is a much better songwriter. His songwriting reminds me somewhat of Hayden, but it is much more dramatic, lush, and expressive and his singing is in an entirely different league. There is also a soft serenity to the music that is nearly as gently calming as the best of Iron and Wine.Actually, Rice and Iron and Wine's Sam Beam write songs that evoke many of the same feelings, though Rice is a far stronger vocalist (though it has to be granted that Beam is perhaps unrivalled as a lyricist today--I think you have to go to people like Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan to find a demonstrably better lyricist than Sam Beam).

There's always been something a little mysterious about Gomez. Yet no one would mistake them for a dream-pop or shoegazer act. The UK quintet relies too much on acoustic instrumentation (violin, mandolin, harmonica, etc.) and rocks too hard to qualify. In fact, they've never been part of any "scene," British or otherwise. 4-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
Am a true fan and finds this album truly eclectic. My favorite track is "girlshapedlovedrug" the story is brillant...the wicked girl. I think that Gil Norton did a great job at production and it's not "Split the Difference" but How We operate stands on its own. And these guys are great live....
4-0 out of 5 stars Folk rock vocal fun!
Gomez has something for everybody on this one.Great lyrics, great music, great arranging--- hard not to like.It rocks, it's whimsical, it's emotive, it's got a beat.Really hard to classify.Track 7, Tear Our Love Apart, is my 8 year old son's favorite song.I've bought 3 more to send to friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gomezing
i saw Gomex perform live touring with this album, and although I had never heard tracks from How We Operate I went right out and bought it.I think the best track is "How We operate," by far. There is more energy packed into that one song than into most "high energy" albums. The diversity between songs just shows the wide range of musical abilities within this group. There is variation in style, composition, and musicality in this entire album. "Hamoa beach" and "Tear your Love Apart" are also amazing. This is a must-buy. ... Read more

One of the freshest country albums of the year comes not out of Nashville, but rather New York, from a sporadic band with the unlikely (and somewhat suggestive) moniker of the Little Willies. At times, the fivesome (named in homage to Willie Nelson) hearkens to the great historic western-swing bands--crack, loose-limbed musicians fronted by a hypnotically sublime girl singer. If that sleepy female voice (and her distinctive piano) sounds astonishingly like Norah Jones, that's because it Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the road
I purchased this CD before going on vacation. With both a seven-year-old and a nine-year-old in the car, we had to endure the loud soundtracks of movies from the back seat. And, when I suggested that we turn off the TV and listen to a CD, they were both unhappy! That is, until I popped in this CD. These happy tunes made all of us smile and my kids even started to sing along! If you want a CD that will make your day, purchase this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun listen... more fun the second time, even more fun after that!
I'm a recording engineer by trade.I sit in little rooms with no windows and big speakers listening to the same song for 15 hour stretches for weeks in a row.Every now and again a record will roll through that is actually fun to make. This sounds like one of those recordings.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nora and Texas Swing
Great collection if you like Nora and also like Texas Swing. There's Nora doing a few cuts as lead and sounding great as usual. The other cuts on the CD are great country tunes, some funny, some sad with a tight band keeping it interesting. Definately worth a listen. ... Read more

A side project doesn't usually hit gold, especially when said project is a quirky virtual collective fronted by cartoon characters. This album is one of the best of our time. Integrating interesting drum riffs, symphonic arrangements, creative lyrics, musical sounds that inspire, all to create a mixed up style that breaks all barriers of genre and time. Truely a classic.

The music is a unique mix that really draws you into what you are listening too.I was not crazy about the title (a little creepy) the CD was a great surprise, because I like everything on it!Great sounds and great listening!!!

Being the second full record from Gorillaz, I was re-introduced to them after listening to "Feel Good Inc." millions of times, due to my Gorillaz-happy friend.I decided to check this one out and I was glad that I did. This is one of the best records of '05.No, it didn't pick up any Grammys and there is no real standout song apart from "Feel Good Inc." but it is very conisitent and diversified.

I'm sick of two things in all the reviews I've read. 1How much they hate Mosley the lead singer 2How much they love Mosley the lead singer. The weird thing about music people can't seem to grasp is that music isn't something you can rate and say that what you think is the law. No, music means something different to everybody and different people like different kinds of music. I think that girl's voice is amazing and she sounds like the voice of a thousand angels but there are alot of people who think she sounds like a drunk hitchhiker and his buddies in a basement. The bottom line is this is an albulm you have to decide on for yourself, don't trust the lovers or the hatters in this case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Venting Panorama colorfully melodized
I bought this CD on a whim while browsing the "up and coming" section at Target.I bought it along with Blue October. What I don't understand is why Blue October is getting more radio time, they're just "ok" to me.Flyleaf is an intense, vocal, wide range of emotional color that exudes a venting panorama. There's the heavy riffs and sizzling drums in the background that vibes so well with Lacey Moseley's wide ranging, beautifully melodic vocals. But she also has this passion and intensity that blends so well with the heavy rock feel.I've always enjoyed a melodic female voice mixed with heavy rock/pop sounds.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good CD
I bought Flyleaf's CD over the weekend and just had to put up a comment about it.I would not rate this CD my favorite that I have bought in the past year but I would certainly put it into the top, oh I don't know, 20.It is a good CD having many good tracks on it, but listening to Fully Alive on the radio then buying the CD and listening to the entire CD, the CD was different than what I expected, so that could be altering my judgement on it.There is a bit too much screaming on the first track and another on it, I don't remember which one.Buy the CD because it is worth your money, just don't buy it because you really like Fully Alive because many of the songs on the CD are not like that song, they are a bit heavier than that.A good CD overall and I will be buying their next CD coming out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars They Have Reached The Top
Mastodon may very well have become the pinnacle of all modern metal with their newest album "Blood Mountain." Now of course Mastodon has been ahead of the game quite some time. 2003's "Remission" was a crushing frenzy that showed the band's technical and innovative approach to song writing, while still hinting at greater things to come. And with 2004's "Leviathan," greater things did come. Not only was it a bold move made in the act of creating a concept record about Moby Dick, but Mastodon further expanded their technique, adding atmospheric and melodic elements to their sound in favor of creating something completely original and different from what they had done before. So how would they follow with their much anticipated third full length album "Blood Mountain?" As if they weren't already masterminds, this record further solidifies Mastodon as the premier innovators in today's metal world. From start to finish "Blood Mountain" is nothing short of a masterpiece, and if this is the kind of evolution and song writing we can expect Mastodon to expand upon in the future, I can only ask myself, "Where and what is next?"
5-0 out of 5 stars Mountainously brilliant
Mastodon's first album, Remission, was a gigantic shock to the system of modern heavy metal, combining ferocious grooves, head-spinning technicality, and fearsomely creative songwriting for the sort of truly singular sound a precious few bands in any genre can truly lay claim to.The followup, Leviathan, a musical interpretation of Melville's Moby Dick, packed more than enough dramatic weight to suit its title and subject matter, and saw the band branching out into more melodic and accessible territory without abandoning the complexity and pummelling heaviness that formed the base for their appeal. Now comes album number three (and number one on a major label after defecting from Relapse), Blood Mountain, marked once again by increasingly adventurous progressions in both musical and lyrical content, with a near-total abandonment of verse/chorus song structures and an epic fantasy/adventure lyrical concept running throughout. And once again, the band's skills have kept pace with their ambition, as Blood Mountain is quite possibly the most innovative, fascinating, and downright brilliant metal album of this decade, worth every second of the numerous listens it takes to fully absorb the experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting, but WOW!
Someone who has listened to the other Mastodon albums: Leviathan, Remission, and Lifesblood over and over and over, like me, thinks they know what to expect from Mastodon. Catchy and steel-hard riffs, growling poetic vocals. And since they switched from Relapse to Reprise, gaining a much bigger production budget, you'd think the acoustics would sound different, maybe a little less fuzzy.

Okay, to start off this review, I am NOT a kid. In the middle of August I was at the music store browsing for something new. Then I remembered my friend telling me about Tool and saying how great they were. So I decided to give them a listen and picked up AEnima. When I got home, I put the album into my cd player and pressed the play button. At first I felt many mixed emotions, like I thought the album was way too weird but being the person I am, gave the cd a second chance and boy was I glad I did! after about a third listen I started to realise how amazing AEnima really was. A materpiece that is perfect in everyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cut Above Country Radio Regulars
Charlie's latest has no weak tracks whatsoever. The title song is full of tongue-in-cheek humor and rebellion, hearkening to some of John Prine's best songs. It has one of the catchiest lines ever in country music:"Buy me a whiskey, get yourself stoned, we gonna have a good time." As usual, Charlie tells a great many stories in his songs:a unrepentant pleasure seeker lets it all hang out south of the border in "New Year's Day;" a man hits the skids emotionally in "The Bottom;" the narrator remembers his own broken childhood and admires his infant son in "Photograph;" a dissipated adult recalls his first drink and charts his own disgrace in "Something in the Water;" a girl weds a bad man in the haunting "Magnolia," a story-telling style that is reminiscent of Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying." Charlie Robison has more talent as a writer and performer than 99% of anyone in Nashville. Please buy this album; do yourself a favor. If you like songs deeper than your average mud puddle but still universally-applicable, this CD is for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Different, But Good
I found this album to be quite different then what I've come to expect from Charlie, but it is still good and worthy of attention."El Cerrito Place" is the best song on the album and I find myself listening to it over and over.If you are a Texas Country Music Fan or a Charlie Robison fan then you will like this album. Also, if you like Charlie, check out his brother Bruce Robison as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen Again...
I think the Lips suffer a similar fate as all the great acts that constantly reinvent themselves (Dylan, U2, Beatles...).That is that some folk love a certain album so much they want it again and if they don't get it then the band has failed.I have so much love for Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi. No two albums from the last 20 years are so close to me and my own dilemnas.Certainly the song "Race for the Prize"is enough to endear them to any scientist.Which brings us to At War.When I first listened I had certain expectations, immediately met by The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song. Then the rest was so different from my expectations I set it aside. Then in making a mix tape for the Lab recently, I listened again and found myself adding so many of these songs to it!"Yeah,Yeah,Yeah" of course, but also "Mr. Ambulance Driver", "Vein of Stars", and "The W.A.N.D."This album stands proudly for me with each of classics they made since Clouds...But just remember, it wasn't always so.Suddenly Everything Has Changed...

4-0 out of 5 stars Cliche? The Lips?
I'll give this 4 stars for a Lips album, as some of the songs sound like they were tossed off rather than crafted (Free Radicals, for instance). Compared with anything else currently being made, it'd have to be a 5. But what I really want to say is that anyone who dismisses anything the Lips have done as cliche doesn't understand the band. Go back through their entire oeuvre for long, repeated listenings, and you should discover that the Lips have never done anything based on industry or fan expectations, or genre pigeonholes. They do what they want, and it's almost always a combination of undeniable tunefulness, outright goofiness, and masterful musicianship (well, at least in the last decade), with some element of okie (guitar) noodling usually lurking underneath. They can sound like a drugged-out heavy-metal band, Prince, or Floyd, but they're always just themselves.
2-0 out of 5 stars Such a Let Down
I write from the perspective of a life-long fan. This was one of the first modern bands that I loved and I followed their every release from my preteen years onward. They seemed to never miss the mark creatively or sonically, and the increasingly strong imagination and coherence behind each record was only matched by the increasingly complex production. But on this release, they seem to have run out of ideas and melodies and passion. That hurts to say, but it is painfully true. I'll accept this as their auto-pilot record. The reason I give it two stars is because it makes me appreciate Yoshimi, an album I initially viewed as a disappointment in the shadow of the Soft Bulletin, as a proper album (albiet a lateral move). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Whoo! Alright - Yeah...Uh Huh
Not easy to compete with 'echoes',one of my favourite albums of the past 5 years but i think a good follow-up. less edgy, more rythm.
4-0 out of 5 stars excellent record
i was driving home from work, listening to my local college radio station, and i heard "get myself into it" ... i was awkened from deep thought and was wondering what i was listening to... the "sound" reminded me of NYC 1981 ... but i wasn't sure ... i heard the dj announce the name of the band, i bought the cd the following day, and i can't wait to see this band perform live ... you might not like every track on this cd, but to this listener's ears, the majority of tracks are well worth the purchase price ... can't wait to get ahold of their first record...
