Editorial Review

It's an irresistible concept: Wayne "The Train" tearing it up on 14 original juke joint/swing tunes backed by a raw, first-rate band. He's got the assets to make it work: sharp, incisive vocals, fresh numbers, Lloyd Maines as producer, and an awesome recording band featuring the blazing lead guitar of veteran Hancock sideman Eddie Biebel, guest guitarists Paul Skelton and Dave Biller, and non-pedal steel guitarist Eddie Rivers. By avoiding self-conscious imitation (a pitfall that's done in many acts inspired by the past), they often come fetchingly close to capturing the feel of any number of obscure '40s Texas honky-tonk 78s: swinging out on "Tulsa," down and dirty on "Drinkin' Blues" and the Ernest Tubb-inspired "I Don't Care Anymore" and "Goin' Home Blues," and the earthy "Brother Music, Sister Rhythm." Given Hancock's often-stated affinity for Bob Wills-style swing, the sole disappointment is the scarcity of those sorts of songs here. With a group of musicians this dynamic, a few more rip-roaring moments would have been welcome. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Can't fault the music
I like it.I really do.The music is great. One of things I really, really, like about Wayne is that he always plays with five-star musicians and it makes a HUGE difference.I'm just not completely sure that he needs to keep recording CD's that are entirely or mostly made up of his own compositions. Not that he's not above-average, but a theme is one thing and repetition is another. The music is great and the songs are good, but maybe not so distinct from one another, or particularly distinguishable from anything he's already recorded.I still recommend it, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tulsa is the album for me!!!
Well worth the wait! Wayne's been playing many of these songs at his shows for a while now and I've been dying to get this album. It did not disappoint.Every track is solid, and like all of Wayne's albums, there is no filler here.Do yourself a favor and get this album now! It will prove to you that REAL music still exists.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Train does it again!
I got this a couple of days early because I pre-ordered and recieved it a tad early. All I can say is WOW.This is a classic album, The Train & the band are firing on all cylinders with this album. There's not one bad cut on this album. This is genuinely REAL swingin' Honky Tonk Music that would even have Bob Wills & Hank Williams get up and do jig.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all the sides of one of rock's greatest bands...
For a greatest hits collection, I've rarely come across one thats as good as this. If your looking to get into them, start here, it gives you all things pumpkins. I never owned any of their stuff, so if your like me and want too get a taste of them, this is the best place to start IMO. This album basically goes through all the stages that the pumpkins went through in their career. Some fans prefer different era's of the band, but this collection has all of them on here. It goes from there early stuff to when they started experimenting with electronica on the last few albums. I personally like it all, and I can start the album and let it play all the way through. I really like the flow and pace of it. If your a big pumpkins fan, this album isn't for you since you have all the albums anyways, I wouldn't say that this adds anything you don't have (unless you buy the Limited edition that has a 2ndb-side disc..). This album is for those who don't own a pumpkins album, like I was prior to purchasing this.If you were like me, buy this album, it really does give you all aspects of the pumpkins. I can honestly say that since I've listened to this album many times, I have alot more respect for the Smashing Pumpkins, they truly are one of rocks greatest bands.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!!
I can tell you some of my favorite's are missing: Muzzle, I am One,Crestfallen, Try,Try,Try , Rocket. I know it dosn't sound like a lot but if they had put in all the greatest songs it would have gone like this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good...I'm getting more albums!
The Smashing Pumpkins are amazing.Really, they are.Back in the early nineties, when I was about 4 or 5 years old, my older brother used to listen to The Smashing Pumpkins. Now, about a dozen years later, I listened to the sample of "1979" and was blown away by a wave of wondrous nostalgia.

Editorial Review

Modern folk and blues rarely sounds as inventive and colorful as the Wood Brothers' spare, soothing studio debut. Currents of jazz, pop, and country also ripple through these 12 lovely arrangements built around Chris Wood's upright bass (previously heard in Medeski, Martin & Wood) and Oliver Wood's gentle acoustic and electric guitars. It's not simply that the brothers' sweet, high voices have the genetic gift of close harmony: they're in absolute synch creatively, too. So when one's singing lingers over a lazy phrase in a number like the languid ode to living "Chocolate on My Tongue," the other hangs back on his instrument until just the right, complementary moment. Drummer Kenny Wollesen, who plays on a handful of tracks, is on the same wavelength--never rushing or pushing the Woods' behind-the-beat sensibility. And the rich dark tones of the bass and, in particular, slide guitars perfectly illuminate their unhurried stories about spiritual discovery and the trials of life. All of which makes Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start...
I always get a little bit suspicious when a band with such a small back catalog comes out with a "best of" album...and after the slapped together money spinners that were "Kettle Whistle" and "Live and Rare" have already stung your pocket you have good reason to...13 of the 19 songs that appear on Ritual De Lo Habitual and Nothing Shocking combined turn up on "Up form the Catacombs", but this is not a bad thing - these two albums are where their genius lie...and make this album a great place to start for newer fans of the band.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Wheres Chip Away
So now its the 20th of September 2006 and do I have this CD? NO. Will I buy it? Most likely.Dont listen to the people that are too cool for their own good, and talk about the "sell-out" game. So they sold a couple songs for commercials. This is truly one of the greatest bands, hands down. Even if you have The Self Titled or Nothings Shocking or Ritual De Lo Habitual or Strays Albums,go get this CD. We need this band. YOU need this band. Even when the songs hit 10+ minutes , like Three Days ,you get sucked in even further. Summertime Rolls is the best, but go and enjoy all the music on this comp, even Been Caught Stealing. They're all F-ing GREAT

5-0 out of 5 stars Blistering Rock Music, Classic and Ahead of Its Time
By the time Jane's Addiction had their "big hit" (_Ritual de lo Habitual_'s "Been Caught Stealing") their sound and style had already been adopted by so many early 90's "alternative" artists that it took their leadership of the Lollapalooza Festival to remind the public just how long they had been creating their unique blend of psychadelic-glam-art-metal.Moving from gentle to blistering rock within the span of seconds, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins created a sound during their early live shows (represented on their self-titled first album) that was at once classic and ahead of its time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why all the hate?
Radiohead is my favorite band, but I'm not giving this album 5 stars because of that. I'm giving it 5 stars because it's a GOOD record. It may be another electronic album like Kid A, but it's still a different record. While Kid A had a quiet and bleak tone, Amnesiac has a more frantic and ambient sound. Like Aphex Twin but with lyrics and more frantic. This album gets as much play as the other albums from me, so I can't complain. On a side note, Radiohead fans are such pains. They hate this and Kid A (both are great records) because the tone has changed completely from Ok Computer, but they also hate Hail To The Theif because it sounds too much like an "Ok Computer re-hash". Make up your minds, Radiohead fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Find Your Vein
I don't know if heroin is a prereq for this album, but I don't do it so I listened without. If they are trying to capture what is like to be finding a vein by an old railroad track near dilapidated factory in Liverpool, and rolling around in your own vomit, than I think they succeeded. They still rock though.

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay, they lost me here
Radiohead delivers amnesiac as a follow-up to the much anticipated yet somewhat misunderstood Kid A. From here, it should become clear that leftovers are leftovers for a reason. In Ryan Adam's recent three albums of 2005, his plan was to release all music from one session and make not one album but three. The result. Fillers. Radiohead, however, made a remarkably experimental album in Kid A, and while by no means their best, remains severely underrated. Anesiac is almost the opposite. It was created from unreleased sessions from Kid A, and while a few songs such as "I Might Be Wrong," "Pact," and "Hunting Bears" remain true to form, most of these should have remained sessions. Sorry guys, bravo to the max for absolutely everything prior, but I can't really get into this one. I hated Kid A at first, kept retrying until I loved it, but I'm afraid that its just not working with this one. I'll give it an extra star for its three decent songs and for it being made by radiohead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing debut from legendary band...
The sad thing about it is, that this debut CD which I think came out in 94' sounds thousands of times better than CD's put out by bands today in 2006! The sound quality is not that great, but the music is awesome! Straight forward heavy rock, no mathematical complex riffs here. Probably Maynard's most angry lyrics out of their whole discography, but nevertheless graet. Opiate was the start of a legendary band that puts out 10/10 CD's all the time. The only other band that puts out 10/10 release all of the time is Opeth. ... Read more

On its seventh album--and first without founding member Brian "Head" Welch--Korn makes a few changes and gets on with proving that it's still a viable force within the world of heavy rock. The venerable veterans lean on outside help from the songwriting team of the Matrix and producer Atticus Ross (Nine Inch Nails). The end result is that this is a big change for Korn and one that will garner large shares of message board controversy on wether this album is more industrial than nü. The band is at its deftest on "Getting Off," "Politics" and "Coming Undone," which highlight the industrial bend. Stalwart fans need not worry for "Liar" and "For No One" remain in lock-step with classic Korn. One need not listen to the full hour-plus to discover flaws. Its center becomes weighed down with bland mid-tempo numbers and the final song detracts from the powerhouse close the record might have had they ended with "Interlude #3/I've Seen It All." Still, Korn has demonstrated that it's capable of weathering the storm and emerging with an album that will carry them onward.Read more

I've been a huge Korn fan for a while now and i've just gotta say that they're an amazingly good numetal band! To last all these years and still be coming out with great music is pretty incredible and it's something not alot of bands can do these days.

wow. i haven't seen kids with korn shirts in years, therefore i assumed they broke up and stopped making noise.
5-0 out of 5 stars Different, but still awesome
This album shows Korn playing almost a different style of music. It is more fast and not as dark as some of their past albums. But it is still korn, and although head is no longer in the band, munky really stepped it up, playing cool riffs along with jonathan davis's awesome vocals. although it is different, it still has that kickass feel to it and the songs are great. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?
DUDE?!?! What happened, when i heard about a new Zombie cd i was like O YEA! and then when i heard foxy foxy i was like WTF?? What happened to Hellbilly and Sinister kind of music?? I dont know what happened but, I'll admit theres a few decent songs like Let It All Bleed Out and The Scorpion Sleeps, but WTF?!?!?!?!?
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Overlook This One!
OK, ok.Typical Rob Zombie it ain't.I agree. If you love his solo work up to this point and his White Zombie stuff, as I do, you do have a certain expectation about what a Zombie (Rob or White) album will deliver. But Zombie's a creative creature, and that's why I love this album. He's too creative to stick with that hot rod drivin' demon conception forever. And this album proves he can move beyond that.He keeps a lot of the similar, horror based track concepts, but this is less a metal album and much more a hard rock album. It still has loads of the atmosphere that Zombie is quite good at creating, but it's got a lot of groove that really comes across very well. That said, there are still some tracks that sound a little like classic Zombie."Let it All Bleed Out" would fit well on any of his other albums, as would a few others. It's the more unique and clever approaches to songs like "The Devil's Rejects" that make the album unique.Bottom line, if you're willing to let Rob take you in a different direction, this is a very strong album. If you just can't bear Rob trying something a little different, it's not for you.But give it a couple of listens before you condemn this album for its variance from traditional Zombie.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I've been a Zombie fan since somewhere between 94-96 and have seen him 3 times in concert.I am disappointed I went last month to see him with Godsmack and regret wasting the $110 and going out in hurrican Ernesto rain.He has sold out with the Red White & Blue theme and I am tired of him speeding up all his old good songs and no bass. And for you guys that haven't been to this tour yet ROB DID 3 COVER SONGS. UGH!Sweet Dreams and a Van Halen song I dind't know haha and Hendrix's Star Stangled Banner. He even made the sucky Educated Horses linger way too long by playing it at 2 diferrent times. I was mortified.

This 1991 Seattle supergroup brought together Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden with the surviving members of Mother Love Bone (Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard) and Eddie Vedder, later of Pearl Jam. The experiment worked. Cornell shines, seeming more comfortable here on this tribute to his former roommate and deceased MLB lead singer Andrew Wood than with his own band. "Hunger Strike" and "Say Hello 2 Heaven" combine glam and grunge better than anything in Love Bone's catalog, while "Wooden Jesus" is less didactic than anything in Pearl Jam's oeuvre. Most of the songs may be about loss and addiction, but this is compelling music for black days. Read more

Temple Of The Dog (1991.), the first and only release from the Temple Of The Dog grunge supergroup
5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable...
I bought this as a tape when I was a broke kid in the nineties having never heard a single track but already being a fan of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. This was a big risk for my empty wallet and the best purchase I ever made. With this album I fell in love with Chris Cornell as a songwriter and his voice became etched in my head. This music has been described as getting you through black days, well it took me through high school and some crazy turmoil. To this day, about 12 yrs. later every lyric is ingrained in my memory and evokes the same feeling. This is the best I own to this day and I've had to update a bit and buy the CD too. I guess you could call it an album worth buying twice, take that for what its worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling music for black days
Temple of the Dog was a one-off project which was started when Soundgarden's Christ Cornell and Matt Cameron hooked up with Mother Love Bone members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, as well the then-unknown vocalist Eddie Vedder and guitarist Mike McCready. Some of these members would later go on to form Pearl Jam and upon releasing their highly acclaimed debut Ten, this would also reflect on the sales of Temple of the Dog, parachuting the release to platinum status.

The Gorillaz claim to have found their motley crew of cartoon characters sleeping in Leicester Square, but Blur's Damon Albarn (a.k.a. 2-D) and cult cartoonist Jamie Hewlett (Murdoc) aren't fooling anyone. As the ultimate experiment in manufactured image, the Gorillaz are a virtual cartoon-character-based hip-hop band who bring together witty, silly lyrics and talented musicians. Infectious old-school hip-hop rhythms, rhymes, and effects courtesy of Deltron 3030's Kid Koala and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (Russel) are combined with Albarn's passion for chugging lo-fi and edgy melodies to create a seemingly raw but ultimately slick blend of styles. This is nowhere more evident than on the hit single "Clint Eastwood," which is carried along by the sound of 2-D's slurred voice and a bluesy harmonica melody interrupted by Russel's punching rhymes. But the surprises don't stop there: Ibrahim Ferrer's appearance on "Latin Simone" could have come straight from Read more

I, for some reason, cannot put down the first Gorillaz CD.Demon Days was so much better, and yet this CD has a certain charm to it.I predict that ten or fifteen years down the road, this CD will be an even bigger success as it is the Gorillaz'debut. The brain child of Damon Albarn (Blur) and Jamie Lee Hewlett (comic book creator), Gorillaz is comprised of these members, sinister bassist Murdoc, slightly idiotic, enigmatic lead singer 2D, 12-year old guitar virtuoso Noodle, and Russel, the hip-hop bad boy drummer.
5-0 out of 5 stars A milestone in music history
This is a milestone, seriously. The predecessor of "Demon Days", it is often underrated compared to it. It is, what may be less important, the first full serious album by a cartoon band. But then it is the work of a musical genius named Damon Albarn, the best musician living on this earth (only John Lennon was a bit better, but he is dead as you might know). Him and and his roommate Jamie Hewlett, famous for "Tank Girl", having lived together for a few years, got bored by all the common MTV music and crap that went on there, so they decided to form a cartoon band. The rest is history. 5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Gorillaz Songs On This CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars MB20 Is Someone Like You
Southern rock band: Matchbox 20 made their Mainstream debut with YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU. The album was released in late 1996, and it was a major breakthrough in the sound of popular rock. Vocalist Rob Thomas fronted the rhythm section with gritty and yet very melodic lines. His sound and style is what would have made or broke the band. Luckily, Thomas' sound was a style people liked and were soon in demand for. Single after single, and performance after performance, the public could not get enough of the band's southern gritty rock. It is quite clear that Thomas' parts are the foundation to the band, and all the other instruments' parts are written to fit his sound. The end result is a standard I-IV-V progression with a passing chord thrown in here and there, but the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards are in sync with each other almost perfectly. Dynamics are a big trait with this group, and the musicians know how to use this aspect just right for their pieces. YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU is a good record and one for any Matchbox 20 fan.

Thought I'd check into System of a Down recently since somewhere in them, they have an ability to put their finger on what's wrong with America(and in some cases, the whole lot of us monkeys). They managed some able commentary in "Violent Pornography" on the twin phenomena of how we degrade ourselves with cheap consumable sexuality in our social lives and take it in on TV as well, and it doesn't seem to matter if anyone is getting exploited(including ourselves) while we indulge. It's a non stop disco, who cares if we all suck? Just keep dancing and screwing and ogling...and now a word from our sponsor. Stay tuned.
5-0 out of 5 stars SOAD's Masterpiece (pt.1)...
I am a fan of the old, raw sound of their first outings just as much as any other 'system' fan; but there is no doubt that 'Mezmerize' and 'Hypnotize' far surpass the former discs' musicallity and songwriting. 'Mezmerize' is the first disc in the 2005 SOAD masterpiece, and could easily be tagged as their best. I personaly look at 'Mezmerize' and 'Hypnotize' together as one album because they were recorded at the same time and I am thoroughly impressed. These two discs are metal masterpieces that will most likely never be forgotten...don't miss out.

3-0 out of 5 stars A step down
This is a step down from their earlier work but still worth listening to.Some of the songs are kind of stupid but I think that is to be expected from SOAD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eno and Byrne score a hit
I first bought this album on a whim since I'm a big eno fan, but not so much of David Byrne. This album was a quite nice surprise, with its beat driven rhythms and guitar of David Byrne, and pulsing ambient textures of Brian Eno. Originally released in the eighties, this album stands the test of time and is still one of the better collaboration albums in Eno's catalouge.
5-0 out of 5 stars What about Amos Tutuola?
I don't understand why no review ever refers to Amos Tutuola's amazing book, from which this album's title was taken. Try reading it and then see how it relates to the album!

5-0 out of 5 stars What really happened in the eighties.
Albums like this one are what makes me grit my teeth when people talk about how vapid 1980's music was. If only they knew how much they missed that was brewing below the surface (The early Butthole Surfers and Big Black, for example).

5-0 out of 5 stars Another vote for Emmylou's voice....
I definitely agree, that listening to the best of this CD, is pure heaven...and to my ears, if you buy this beautiful album, just enable the following cuts and listen to them over.....and over...that's heaven....
5-0 out of 5 stars To touch the heart.
The fact that Emmylou Harris is breathtakingly beautiful distracts only very slightly from her amazing grace as a singer. She is truly touched and truly moving.

4-0 out of 5 stars One fault---this needed to be a two-disk set!
Otherwise, it's wonderful.Really does span the years, but I think there are some places where more emphasis is needed and would have preferred to see a second disk to do it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

When the Red Hot Chili Peppers first appeared smeared in neon body paint with socks dangling precariously from their wieners, even the most faithful funk-metal convert couldn't have conceived they would be around some 20 years later, carrying on in much the same fashion. Despite a long history of tragedies and personnel upheavals, the California quartet's eighth album is mostly business as usual--and business, as usual, is quite good. The title track, "By the Way," is a powerful, bruised piece of slap-bass and intermediary white-boy rapping. "Universally Speaking" pays sweaty, soulful tribute to singer Anthony Kiedis's hometown of Detroit. And "Lemon Trees on Mercury" sounds eerily like it could have been lifted from 1984's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars different, but still EXTREMELY GOOD.
I just purchased this cd and I'm a big fan of the Chili Peppers.I've been buying there cd's since I was 8, but in no particular order, so i haven't really witnessed the gradual change in their style, but now I see it.The difference in sound between By The Way and Blood Sugar Sex Magic is big, but it's still fantastic music. In By The Way, there's almost no "funk"-type music that the Chili Peppers made in their early days.By The Way contains a more alternative rock-type sound overall, which is by no means a bad thing- RHCP can pull off both sounds.I LOVE this album. It really shows you their artistic ability to change their sound a little but still stay true to themselves. If I could I'd give this album 6 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album
When I first listened to this cd I was very disappointed. I had recently become a fan with Californication and at that time I had also bought Blood Sugar Sex Magik (I have all their albums now). So I listened to the opening track, By the Way, and liked it a lot. But the rest of the songs were too poppy for me. I was very sad and I thought that the energy from their previous albums was now completely gone. A few days passed and I decided to give it another chance. I picked a song at random and it turned out to be "On Mercury". I loved it. I couldn't believe I hadn't liked it the first time. And so I decided to listen to the whole album again, and while I didn't like all of the songs, I did start to appreciate them a little more. It took me a little time but I ended up loving this album. I now have it as one of my personal favorites and I now realize that their energy wasn't gone at all, but it had just transformed into something new, while keeping its beauty. Buy it if you have an open mind and desire to listen to truly great and profound music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly the Best...
I absolutely love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and this by far is their best album.

Editorial Review

At a time when experimentation is taboo in most overground rap, that’s all Outkast seem intent on executing. Firstly, this double CD has no cohesive link, other than the fact that it sounds like a pair of solo albums stitched together to demo exactly how Andre’s yin works to augment Big Boi’s yang. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best Outkast's Album
I have been an Outkast fan for almost 10 years. I have got every album they released since Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (which was hard to find in France), released in 1993-1994 in France.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Outkast's latest release, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is a split album, with Andre 3000 and Big Boi each given essentially one album each to fill up with what they want.
