4-0 out of 5 stars eclectic hipness
Good CD with lots of different sounds, all of which conform nicely to K's image of bleeding edge indie goodness. I'm not a big fan of girls singing over acoustic guitars, so I skipped a few of those tracks, but if that is your genre you would probably like those songs as well. Mostly, I credit this compilation for getting me into The Crabs. The Crabs rock my sox off!

5-0 out of 5 stars K's bands rock!
Straight from K recors outta Olympia, WA this comp. is great for anyoneopen to all genres and sub-genres of indie-rock.Modest Mouse is myfavorite band and "Duke's Up" is on there in case you don't wannastruggle for the Blue Cadet vinyl. One song that mysteriously caught mewas the one by the Copass Grinders, don't ask me why but it feels reallyraw.I also enjoy the harder bands on here like KARP.Definitely buy thisif you like compilations.

4-0 out of 5 stars hit-and-miss, but worth the hard-to-find kicking tunes
It's probably K record's style to be somewhat hit-and-miss; to have a broad band of music styles to intrigue and entertain. This compilation achieves these goals.A collection of seven-inch vinyl releases, the highlights of the disc are (if you're into K's pop style) an old Crabs song (if you're a fan, you've already heard it), some Lois, the good version of Kicking Giant's "She's Real," Wandering Lucy, Modest Mouse, Versus, and Heavenly. If you dig these bands, you should check these alternate releases of songs you might already love.If you want to dig these bands, this disc would be a good starting point in exploring the K-punk world. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not my thing
I didn't like this album. I into punk stuff and I also like some reggae and when I saw this CD with all the weed references and things like "DREAD kennedys" and "in DUB we trust" or the little jamaican flag on the side I expected reggae covers of Dead Kennedys songs. Instead it was this techno-industrial type thing that I'm not into, if you like that kinda thing, this cd is for you. But for all you like me, THIS IS NOT A REGGAE CD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jock O Rama!
Covers of classics that got me to whip out my original DK albums...Not a lot of great tracks here but a pretty fresh attempt.I thought Jock-O-Rama was the best track on this album, which really stood out with the fun and subversiveness (and now with clever samples?) that brought the original so close to my heart and liver.

    4-0 out of 5 stars .

3-0 out of 5 stars For the early 90's lo-fi indie pop addict
So...this is something of a rarity now, I imagine. Well, I discovered this back when it first came out, and I was pretty smitten with its content. In particular, I discovered my new favorite band (at the time), suddenly, tammy! spinART was their label back then, and "Lamp" I think was their first single. Anyway, their take on indie pop won me over. I've loved their sound ever since (think Kristen Hersh fronting Ben Fold Five, and you kind of have an idea-but that does them a disservice really).

5-0 out of 5 stars worth it for one cd worht of material....
Lots of filler on this one. Alot of the bands here are just victims of being too sloppy or not being able to afford decent recording-or maybe both. There are some standout tracks though. Royal Court Of China do a great job (great rock n roll band btw) as well as the Flaming Lips and Dramarama (leave it up to them to cover such an obscure track). My favorite by far is The Rubber City Rebels version of Caught In A Dream. Not only is this a very underated A.C. track (written by Michael Bruce)but the rebels happen to be a great band too (They released one major label album back in 1980-which was so good it was ridiculous). If it wasnt for this tribute album I would have figured the Rebels had long ago broken up. Anyone know what these guys are doing now?

3-0 out of 5 stars half & half
First of all, diehard alice cooper fanatics will have some problems digesting this album. Fans of alterna-punk-noise pop will think the sunshines out of this album. The performances range from humorous to downrighthorrible. Flaming lips easily steal the show with a drugged out version ofsun arise but as far as i'm concerned, that's really the only cool thing onthe disc! to be perfectly frank, this disc was a unnecessary attempt atmaking money! So please don't waste your money!

3-0 out of 5 stars For the serious Alice Cooper fan only.
The really good thing about this disc is the selection of songs covered. It could have been limited to his "hits", but these bands pulled out a few of the more obscure titles. The performance of the songs are another matter. While some of the covers are actually pretty cool, others seemed like they were not taking them seriously. I did not know any of the bands doing this cd so I wasn't sure what to expect. Most of the music is kind of heavy in a post punk sense. An interesting addition for the serious Alice Cooper collector only. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Music!
This is a great buy.You get 100 tracks of music that is VERY diverse. You get the electrical-sounding music of Joy Electric, hardcore styles of Zao and Overcome, the punk of MxPx, the weirdness of Danielson, and so much more! The songs are put in order of the years they were released, starting with the earliest, so you get to really hear how Tooth and Nail has progressed throughout the years.Brandon Ebel and Bill Power need to be congratulated on this 100th release.Only flaw is that its a little dated (made back in 1997 or 98, I think), so it won't include some of the newer bands Tooth and Nail has signed (like the great Juliana Theory). But it's a good buy for nostalgic reasons.5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelivable

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Unique and very eclectic..... its worth a buy.
This album is quite interesting, unique and very eclectic, I wouldn't consider it to be part of my regular "everyday" kind of buy or music collection but its a MUST HAVE in any collection. The music artistsvary so much that it would be difficult for me to place them in any type ofgenre or category. In my own personal music interest, I think that songslike Tragic Flaw by Suzanne Little, Resurection by Delirium, Solid Groundby Ginger and Single Gun Theory's Fall are what make this album so special. They definetly belong to that Cafe Culture type of people. Suzanne Little'sSongs could be considered to be a combination of Sarah Mclachlan and KristyThirsk (very earthy vocals), the lead singer from Ginger does howeverremind you of Placebo's lead singer yet the music isn't as heavy. Deliriumand Single Gun theory are sort of mystical in their style however not asmystical or earthy as Enigma. If you have an eclectic taste in music thenthis is a great BUY. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Industrial Ambient
I didn't like the Bang on a Can CD much, but I found this CD to be really surprising - not like a clone so much as a mutant. Following the spirit of Eno instead of the word pays off.

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked it
As an Eno fan anything that comes up with his name on it, either as a composer/performer or as a "tributee" catches my attention. I am glad I bought this album as it shows that Brian Eno's music is very robust. It survives the interpretation by other musicians. Actually, most of the pieces on this album are great. I listen to this CD very often. If you are thinking about buying this, why not get Bang On A Can's "Music for Airports" (another tribute to Brian Eno) as well. Different style but just as great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid good work, quite enjoyable
I really cannot agree with most reviews here. While tribute albums are often weak, I think this is one of the rare cases where it stands up quite well. Some of the updates may not be extremely original, but they are very competently done, and highly enjoyable to listen to (at least for me - example: Third Uncle). Yes, there are a couple of weak tracks (Warszawa comes to mind, and Baby's on Fire), but there are some really outstanding tracks as well - take Sky Saw... the vocal treatments are really quite brilliant! And the whole track is well organized, very tight. Another great track: The True Wheel, really well put together. Energy Fools the Magician - nice mood and sonic landscape. Actually, except for the 2 weak tracks, I think this is an excellent CD. And what is rare for a tribute album: it actually has great unity. Doesn't feel like disparate pieces thrown randomly together. I've listened to this CD many, many times, and find it forms a body of work with unique character. Quite an accomplishment for a tribute album by relatively unknown performers. I wish Amazon had a 1-10 star ranking - I'd give it 8 1/2 stars. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

A Cambridge, Massachusetts, studio that has hosted a parade of emerging alt rock stars from the eastern seaboard since 1986, Fort Apache has now spun off its own label. The first signing, a tunefully dissonant band called Cold Water Flat, measures up well on this handsomely packaged sampler of the name acts--Dinosaur Jr., The Lemonheads, Come, Juliana Hatfield, Belly and Buffalo Tom included--whorecorded Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A sampler worth owning
One of the smallest of music genres is the "sampler worth buying" category. Most have, at best, a couple good singles.More often than not, one reads the track list, whoops it up at seeing lots of favorite artists, and then quickly finds out that the songs are castaways that didn't find their way onto the artists' albums for a reason. This CD is different.I've owned it for years and still play it on a semi-regular basis. The tracks from Dinosaur, Jr., Sebadoh, Billy Bragg, Radiohead, the Lemonheads, the Walkabouts, and others are all first rate. This compilation is worth much more than the few dollars that you can surely find it for.

4-0 out of 5 stars good stuff!
Love it, despite the pompous art-rock of Throwing Muses, the one blemish on this album. It's like a snapshot of the Boston rock scene in the early 90's, highlighting some of the better songs penned by Mark Sandman of Morphine, Lou Barlow of Sebadoh and the Folk Implosion, Tanya Donnelly, Radiohead, and Cold Water Flat. If you can find a copy, get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must find a copy of this CD and BUY IT!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Uneven but well-intentioned
This disc contains cover tracks by Shonen Knife and Bongos, Bass and Bob--the bassist of which is Penn Jilette, half of Penn & Teller. Other than that, it's largely forgettable and so wildly varied that it's not aneasy or enjoyable listen.

As a Shadows' fan for over 40 years, I have been aware of this CD for some time. I had resisted buying it. I asked myself why I would want other versions of "Apache" etc. when I can listen to the Shads' originals. What's that old James Bond film song--"Nobody Does It Better" ! When it comes to guitar instrumental music, for me at least, there are the Shadows--then the rest.5-0 out of 5 stars My FAVORITE "Comp" Cd!

I've been picking up more and more of these"Comp CDs"-- collections where every song is by a different band. And I've had a wonderful time discovering so many bands I might otherwisenever have heard of (what a cool marketing gimmick). Some, like THE BOSSMARTIANS and THE AQUA VELVETS have impressed me to no end! Of them all, this has become my favorite collection. My faves include"Atlantis", "The Savage", and of course the albumopener by THE OMEGA MEN-- 2 of whom, by the way, grace the cover (easyguess why I've seen them in live 7 times so far).

4-0 out of 5 stars Shadows are Go!
This is one worthy tribute album to a band whose lush instrumentals mightotherwise have been relegated to elevator hell.Among my personalfavorites are the Tiki Tones' cover of `Tomorrow's Cancelled', theHuntington Cad's `Gonzales', Satan's Pilgrims with `The Rise and Fall ofFlingel Bunt' and Teisco Del Rey's `Theme for Young Lovers'.I'm not somuch into the lyrical numbers, but hey, that's just MHO.Much recommended!- Jim Winterbottom, Tahlequah, OK. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A super album
I saw the Amboy Dukes perform several times in the late 60s in a London club - the 'British' Amboy Dukes, who did a cover of 'Judy in Disguise', that is. The 'American' band were, and remain, very little-known in England, unfortunately.3-0 out of 5 stars Wow, far OUT, man!
To my mild surprise, I'm finding this CD actually listenable; might even play it a second time.Steve Farmer and his band are a real time capsule of the 1960's psychedelic scene.Sounds like the Amboy Dukes never broke up!The lead guitar even sounds like a less-skilled version of Ted Nugent's sound back then.(I wonder what Ted thinks of this album?)Some of the mystical lyrics and "wow, man!" sounds are a bit laughable, but I'm laughing WITH them, not AT them! The old Dukes tracks sure take me back, but darnit, I was hoping to finally learn Why is a Carrot more Orange than an Orange!Maybe on the next album? 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a real treasure !
It Rocks ! I'm impressed ! But then again I should be afterall ... He IS Steve Farmer ! Cool photo's... Steve Farmer's-Amboy Dukes latest and greatest disc ! WOW ! Beverly Pater-San Mateo, CA ... Read more
