5-0 out of 5 stars If You Think Your Music Collection Is Weird, Check This Out
Tales From The Rhino is a virtual cornucopia of obscure rarities that venture into musical genres that were previously avoided by homo sapiens. However, where else can you find these classics?
4-0 out of 5 stars The early days of the hippest label ever...
Wow. For anyone who likes novelty music this thing's an absolute goldmine--everything from the all-kazoo version of "Whole Lotta Love"to Seth Kirkland's "Famous Jews", which was a big hit on Dr.Demento but unreleased for years. In the meantime, Adam Sandler wrote asong that was more or less the same gag, but he had a record deal. Too badfor Seth. The second disc is a little less enjoyable than the first, butthey're still very solid efforts and worth their weight in platinum forfans of Big Daddy, or Wildman Fischer, or any of the other stars in theRhino galaxy. At last, a doo-wop version of the national anthem with CDquality sound! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alright let's look.
I admit it, this is not the best compilation album. I suggest you only buy this if you know what you are getting into, this isn't for anyone new to the music. And uh, "Music Fan" or whatever, if you honestly think that 'grunge' brought about the whole glam pop thing you need to seriously take a closer look, grunge did nothing to bring about glam pop it has existed for years. If I remember correctly Nirvana are the guys who knocked Micheal off the top of the pop charts? And yeah, Grunge is slow, the guitars are played really screwy and the the lyrics are dark...I prefer ameteurs playing that's what punk was about I thought? Look at the Ramones...At any rate the cd is ok the scene itself was awesome.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sub Pop creates an aura
Another Sub Pop compilation filled with as many "lesser" bands as household names. Not quite the quality (in the music or the packaging) as the Sub Pop 200 re-issue, but a nice snapshot of what came to be known as The Grunge Era.
4-0 out of 5 stars a sound piece of grunge history.
Anyone that says the only well known artist on this compilation is Nirvana is incredibly unfamiliar with the grunge genre.Let's not forget Mark Lanegan and the Screaming Trees, Afghan Whigs, Mudhoney, etc, all just as noteworthy in the genre's history.

5-0 out of 5 stars High school soundtrack redoing Elementary school soundtrack
It's for a great cause, this album, despite what rightwingers might think of it.If you are old enough to remember the old K-Tel compilations (predates Now That's What I Call Music!) like Chartaction '83, Streer Beat or Hit Mix, you probably heard the originals on one of those. Before alternative got silly, several of the "biggies" (Sonic Youth, Redd Kross, Superchunk, Mudhoney, The Muffs and an uncredited Soul Asylum doing the Vibrators' "Baby Baby") and some lesser knowns put out this album of cover tunes. It was too early in some respects for the 1980s retro boom of late, but 13 years on they still hold up pretty well and the price is right.I got this when I was in high school and still listen to it quite frequently.
3-0 out of 5 stars Forgotten alt-bands of the 90s remember alt-bands of the 80s
When bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam redefined the "alternative rock" genre in the early 90s, it became easy to forget that the 70s and 80s had alternative scenes of their own.4-0 out of 5 stars The dream of a Tribute lover
Many people hate tribute records. Many people like them. I am one of the later. I accept that they are often made in a careless way, looking like the artist involved didn't care too much for something they are doing free. This is not the case here. Almost all the covers are taken very seriously, with love. After all those are the songs that really got a lot of people into music. And we are talking about some heavyweigths here: Sonic Youth (alma mater of the project), Mudhoney, Yo la Tengo... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting mix...
The " Lullabye " cover by Leatherstrip is the best { not better than the original has another reviewer suggested }; perfection would have been achieved by inserting Robert Smith's voive instead of the Leatherstip vocalist, who doesn't have much range.5-0 out of 5 stars A great tribute to a great band
I love this tribute to The Cure. The bands paying tribute are all really good industrial/gothic bands.Leaether Strip's version of Lullaby is incredible. There are actually a number of songs from this CD I really enjoyed.100 Years by Nosferatu, Jumping Someone Else's Train by Kill Switch ... Klick, Sinking by The Shroud (Really good), Let's Go to Bed by Crocodile Shop, Shake Dog Shake by Ex-Voto (exceptional), Pornography by Wreckage, A Night Like This by Test Infection (great), A Forest by Death Lies Bleeding, and Primary by Bell, Book and Candle. That is ten songs on a 13 song CD that I really liked.I can't say much more about how good this disc is than that. This is an industrial classic, and a wonderful and complex tribute to The Cure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some great covers...
But also a few pointless ones. I hate the song 'Killing an Arab' in the first place but the other covers make it well worth the price. I personally think 'Disintegration' by Razed In Black is the best cover on here, 'Lullaby' by Leather Strip is also good and so is Nosferatu's cover. I think the song selection on here isn't the best, either, but considering that these covers are done mainly by Goth/ Darkwave bands...this album is really cool, and The Cure is a very influential band so they completely deserve this. I recommend this album to fans of The Cure who like other Goth bands...if you are a fan of The Cure (ungothy) pop songs you will Not like this, but any good Goth would like this =] ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best comps ever
i got into a LOT of bands because of this compliation. it is varied, but nearly all the tracks are outstanding. amazon needs to fix their filing of this because it doesn't show up in the Kill Rock Stars series list with the other 2 (kill rock stars and stars kill rock). highly recommended. it doesn't say it on the track list but "Puffin Stars" is by Helium and is the only place to get that track.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good compilation, but ironic medium
This is a good compilation from the Kill Rock Stars label. All the artists are punk rock or indie or whatever. I came to the record attracted by the Boredoms and Free Kitten songs. But a lot of the other artists I hadn't heard of turned out to be really good. This compilation might just serve as an introduction to these artists but the album is fun to listen to by itself too. I bought the LP version and have never seen the CD. It's really rather funny they did release this on CD because this record is clearly anti-CD. On the LP there is an essay by Sun Ra which explains that CDs are the lie which the industry uses to over charge the consumers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dig up the DJ!
If you can find these- snap them up! I have had these compilations for years- I think they only made three of them. (1986, 1987, and 1988.) I have owned them for longer than I care to admit. They survived years of heavy rotation in my CD changer, and I had to stage covert operations to snag them back from over-enthusiastic borrowers more than once.

Listening to this cd for the first time was like stepping back to the year 1986.All the songs are good and representative of the memorable New Wave songs and bands of the early and mid 80's.A great cd for someone whowants to relive that era without buying a bunch of cds. ... Read more

Editorial Review

One doesn't necessarily associate punk firebrands the Clash with the radio-ready likes of Third Eye Blind and No Doubt. But in the years since the demise of the Clash, their impact, once localized to the punk underground, has seeped up from the gutter they once championed. ("The truth," rasped Joe Strummer in one of his more memorable couplets, "is known only by guttersnipes.") Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ignore Extremist Reviews, Not a Bad Disc
I am a huge Clash fan like many others who wrote in.But I think most reviews are overreactions. What the hell did these people expect from this disc?A couple tracks are good, a couple are very good, a couple suck.End of story. It's not the Clash, just what some others have made of some of their tunes. If you're a Clash fan, you'll be interested just for the curiosity factor.I doubt you'll listen to the disc a lot.I don't.It's a novelty to be broken out on occasion on road trips. Now go back to listening to Give 'Em Enough Rope.
2-0 out of 5 stars Influence of The Clash is evident; compilation is spotty
So the Clash-revival fetishism started sometime in the 1990's. Perhaps it began with the release of "Train In Vain" as a single years after its debut as a hidden track on London Calling. It certainly came to a head at the point of Joe Strummer's death, but my wrath aimed towards those cashing in on it--I'm specifically looking at you, Dave Grohl--will be saved for another time. The 1990's were also significant in that they spawned a number of musical acts that drew heavily from The Clash's influences.
3-0 out of 5 stars highs and lows
when ur dealing with tribute albums its not likely that ur ever gonna like every song, because if ur a fan of the original band then some other bands just wont do justice to the material.in the clash's case, there are pretty big shoes to fill.high points are the urge - radio clash, 311 - white man in hammersmaith palace.both songs cover well while contributing a little something new.some other songs are either lesser versions of the original or too inovative for its own good.decent buy for clash fans, pick it up. ... Editorial Review

Understand from the get-go that label retrospectives are spotty affairs. Rare is the label that's free of stiffs, and Stiff Records' raison d'état was to serve as a refuge for castoffs, including a fair share of flaccid acts. The off-center likes of Nick Lowe (having recently fleed the misbegotten Brinsley Schwarz), Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Larry Wallis, and a very young Elvis Costello found a home with Stiff in the '70s. It wasn't a punk label, though it boasted the Damned; it wasn't a ska imprint, though Madness and Desmond Dekker recorded for the company; it wasn't a power-pop or pub-rock haven, though a number of Stiff's leading lights (Dury, Lowe, Costello, Dr. Feelgood, Dave Edmunds) fell into those categories. And it wasn't terribly long-lived. This imaginatively designed four-disc overview definitely loses momentum toward the end, but there's a humble enchantment to an overwhelming percentage of tracks here from label mainstays, the semiacclaimed (Devo, Graham Parker, Lene Lovich, the Pogues), and uncelebrated (Mickey Jupp, Mick Farren, Jona Lewie). 3-0 out of 5 stars If they're dead we'll sign 'em
Disc 1 & 2 are the whole reason to buy this, with a few cuts from disc 3 thrown in as a bonus. Probably more economical to have your old 45 RPM versions converted to CD (and keep those goofy quips engraved in each record's blank space next to the label).

5-0 out of 5 stars Action Packed
Stiff is one of those wacky labels that always seemed to sneak by just under the pop radar.5-0 out of 5 stars Instantly enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry Goes Ultra Hip
Okay, so there are about a million poetry and spoken word CDs out there. And there's a decent amount of good music out there, too. And there have always been recording artists who've tried to bridge the gap between the two art forms. But reVerse is different. Very different. So different that it defies definition. And you need to hear it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Superb Jesus Jones cover ofWe Are So Fragile
Some good, some 'why did they bother'. How strongly you relate to GNs music will probably influence your feelings. 2-0 out of 5 stars Many Poor Covers in an Awful Package
It is nice to know that so many of the bands of today (or at least a few years ago) were so influenced by Gary Numan that they took the time to pay homage to the electronic pioneer on this tribute CD. Some of this time may have been wasted, though, as many of these covers are awful. The best covers are on the first CD. The tracks I prefer are the ones that stray from the original just enough to give the song the unique sound of the performing band, but not so far that it makes the song unrecognizable or agonizing to listen to. Many of the latter are found on the second CD, which I find to be almost worthless. The best covers are St. Etienne's "Stormtrooper in Drag," "I Can't Stop" by Peck Slip, "She's Got Claws" by Posh, and you will never listen to "Poetry and Power" the same way again when you hear Gravity Kill's hard rockin' version of the B-side. But 5 or 6 good songs on a 26-track double CD is not saying much. What's more, the packaging on this CD is dreadful. The track listing is almost illegible. All in all, Random is not very impressive.

2-0 out of 5 stars VERY mixed offering.
2 discs of covers, most of which really don't work.Stick to Numan's originals unless it's cheap and / or you are a total collector of ALL things Numan.Strictly AVERAGE on all levels. Some of the sound quality is awful too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I have listened to this CD and I can truly say that this is has been one of the greatest compilation of music I have ever heard! The artists and their music are intoned with today's lifestyles and issues. Not only do youget great original music when you buy this CD but it's also good to knowthat you are helping women (Black,White,Brown or Yellow, sister, mother or afriend) who are suffering from a deadly diseaseto live longer and fightthis enemy we call Breast cancer! And that my friend, is the greatest giftof all!

I recently listened to this newly released CD and found it to beexcellent.A lot of my favorite songs from this year have been included. There are also some special additions such as "special AliceStudio" versions and "acoustic versions".Even though theCD focuses on alternative music, there is a big variety between men, women, groups, slow, fast, etc. Also, whent the CD is purchased, a donation ismade to many different Breast Cancer foundations.I just find the CD todefinitely be well worth it overall. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Deep elm records really knows what is up.
Even though some may say Deep Elm is cashing in on Emo, no one can deny the content of the Emo Diary comps.Strongest tracks are those by Jimmy Eat World and Emo rock purveyors Samiam.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good introduction
Emo is a word I don't like to use to describe music.Classifying music isn't fair to the artist or to the songs they've put out. But, if you're interested in this kind of music (emo/post-hardcore/indie/etc.) then thisis a good comp to get. There are a couple bands I knew ahead of time(Jimmy Eat World and Samiam), but then I found some very pleasent surprises(especially Pohgoh). If you can, I suggest you find their full length (onOutback Records). Overall, this comp does a decent job of showing the widevariety of music being put out by a bunch of young bands.

5-0 out of 5 stars great emo-core/indie compilation from known/unknown bands
This disc is a must-have compilation of bands on deep elm and some bigger labels. the bigger bands on this are triplefastaction, jimmie eat world, and samiam, but there isn't a bad song on here. check out lazycain and thetriplefast songs. i don't own numbers 2 and 3 yet, but believe me, i'mgetting them as soon as i have the money. if you like emo, or if you wantan introduction, or you just want to listen to some really intense stuff, get this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars honest music
Finally some honest music from honest artists that is certainly not your typical 'neo-soul' stuff that we have all grown so tired of. This is real r&b y'all just as Eric Roberson states in the beginning of his song 'I Dare U 2 Stay'. However, Abby Dobson does a great job starting things off with her heartfelt lyrics on '4 the love'. She obviously has seen a few things in the music industry that has compelled her to tell her side of the story & let everyone know that she does sing 4 the love. My other favorites include Ebony 'Can't Let Go'(the beat & hook are crazy on this one!), Chinahblac 'Bae-be'(performance reminds me of the ever-soulful Bilal & again the beat is great), Wynter 'Love Like This'(can't remember the last time I heard REAL r&b like this). Great job to everyone on the cd & I can't wait to hear more! Music really needs this.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
I really got this album for that Eric Roberson song ("I Dare U to Stay") and, just as I feared, that's the only great song on here. This is just another one of those generic neo-soul albums with all these people you never heard of and probably won't hear from again. Oh yeah, what's up with that "Nursery Rhymes" song? Kinda corny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Post Rock
Don't understand what the last reviewer meant... what is time for if not to listen to music ? :) This is one of my favorite compilations with tracks in a wide variety of styles, from the downtempo electronic lounge sound ofRazor to the nuttiness of Space Rant, a banging groove from ElectricCompany and sweet melancholy from Flotilla, and much more, nearly all thetracks are solid. If you're into alternative or electronic music and arelooking for something different, get it!

3-0 out of 5 stars You'll only like this if you're really into instrumental
The only way you'll really get into this collection of "underground" music is if you've got a lot of time to listen to it.If you don't, then I suggest you look elsewhere. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 'A Tribute To Spacemen 3' - various artists (Rocket Girl)
Love these tribute CD's of underground bands that keep coming out.Although I don't own any of the three 'actual lp's' by Spacemen 3 as I have several of their live and compilation discs,I was decently impressed with this title. The best tracks here are the two that come first,Bowery Electric's "Things'll Never Be The Same" and Asteroid #4's effort on "Losing Touch With My Mind".Other somewhat enlightening cuts were the upbeat "Revolution" by Arab Strap,"Call The Doctor" done by Bardo Pond, the goth-like "Hey Man" by Frontier and the fantastic "Billy Whizz" by Transient Waves.Recommended for fans of progressive and spack rock.

5-0 out of 5 stars not only for spacemen 3 fan
this title is not only for the fan of spacemen 3. this title is performed by some of the top bands like bowery electric and the you should hear the billy whizz cover by transient waves which in my opinion is better from the original.5-0 out of 5 stars The Tribute is tremendous!

5-0 out of 5 stars To heck with REM and U2
Dude, screw bad hybrid band "Automatic Baby."What makes this album amazing is Ani DiFranco, Angelique Kidjo, Jane Sibbery, Melissa Etheridge, and, yes, even P.M. Dawn. The new mixes and live cuts can't be gotten elsewhere and are not to be missed.I discovered more than one new obsession through this collection, I hope you do too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good CD for a great cause.
I got this CD mostly for the Automatic Baby version of "One" (R.E.M.'s Stipe and Mills, and U2's Clayton and Mullen), which is excellent.(By the way, it's Mike Mills on backup vocals, not Peter Buck, and he's actually very good.)But rest assured, the rest of the CD is verygood as well, full of semi-rare stuff from a lot of other artists. ...
