5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing list.
From the first tune on this disc, Burn by The Cure, you get sucked in.The songs take you on a ride through the movie that you can close your eyes and follow which turns out to be a beautiful ride indeed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Soundtrack That Compliments A Great Movie...
I remember the first time I watched THE CROW movie when it came out in theaters and loving the movie, and sadly learning that Brandon Lee's poetic performance was undercut by his premature death. It was an unfair end for such a brilliant performance, and guaranteed had he still been alive to do the sequel, it would have done almost as well as this stellar movie did. The soundtrack almost eclipses the movie itself, but the movie and the music both match. The sound that dominates most of this soundtrack falls into alternative, metal, goth, industrial, and even a touching ode to close the album.
5-0 out of 5 stars The suitable soundtrack
The Crow is my favorite movie of all time, hands down. The moving love/death/life/revenge plot coupled with Brandon Lee's exceptional performance and very talented supporting cast is more than enough than for The Crow to stand the test of time. However, probably the strongest point of the movie lies in its truly awesome soundtrack that captures the mood of the movie perfectly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad. Bad. Bad.
No emotional depth and doesn't seem to capture the spirit of the songs. Some variation on Cohen's songs are very good but this collection doesn't achieve the spirit of the music on any level.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic album in its own right, a must have in your collection!
Forget about who wrote the songs, forget about trying to make comparisons, forget about whether or not the performances were worthy of a tribute.Simply take it as music.Leonard Cohen wrote great songs that here shows they were also great POP songs. So if you're into great music, especially pop songs, and can listen to music without biases or prejudices then you must pick up this disc. The first track "First We Take Manhattan" clearly exemplifies this. While a R.E.M. fan, this song is one of my favorites by them.Mike Mills as co-vocalist with lead singer Michael Stipes makes this an incredible track.Ian McCulloch has an incredible voice and this shows on "Hey That's No Way...."."I Can't Forget" sounds like any other great Pixies track. There are many other stand out tracks like That Petrol Emotion's "Stories of the Street," "Don't Go Home...," "Chelsea Hotel," "Hallelujah," and my favorite: Dead Famous People's "True Leaves No Traces," which transforms Cohen's beautiful lyrics into just a gorgeous pop song.Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars A middling tribute album
After spending the last few years wandering other musical landscapes, I rediscovered Leonard Cohen this year (years after being a mega LC geek in school) and especially wanted to seek this album out again. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Soup and Dreams are the best ones on this album
In my opinion this is one of the best "90's" albums in my collection.(by the way this isn't a box set... lol) all it is is a 2 cd set. Anyways, as you read in the title, i think that soup by blind melon and dreams by the cranberries are the two best songs on this album. Most of the songs like the ones by the violent femmes, the rollins band, and of course who could forget...nine inch nails.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blind Melons Performance of 'Soup'... Worth the price and more
5 stars for Blind Melons Performance of 'Soup'... Worth the price and more. That and Nine Inch Nails 'Happiness in Slavery'. I've had this since it came out, haven't really listened to it since, cept' the pre mentioned songs. But it's worth all of it just for those 2 songs.

3-0 out of 5 stars A victory for "Victoria'.
This disc was released as a benefit for "Victoria Williams", but I feel like I've benefited from it myself as well. Her songs are all good, but the group of musicians covering them is even better. "Pearl Jam" probably got the most people to buy this, however I like the songs done by "Soul Asylum", "Evan Dando", "Waterboys", and "Lucinda Williams" just as much. "The Jayhawks" and "Matthew Sweet" do a good job too. Basically it's just a really good bunch of music. Also, there's currently 121 used copies on here for sale, so it shouldn't be too hard to come by.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent covers album....
I ordered this from Amazon.com since I'm in the UK and this title wasn't available from Amazon UK. It took about 2 weeks to arrive and was worth the wait. As other customers have said, as a rule Lennon/Beatles cover songs aren't much good at all but this CD is a notable exception.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best cover album i've come across
I got this disc at a used CD shop in town for six dollars, I wasn't expecting much, as most of the Lennon cover/tributes i've heard were pretty lacking. I was dead wrong. There is only one bad cover on this dics, every other is great!3-0 out of 5 stars An OK tribute to Lennon
I must admit that the reason I bought this CD is because I'm a fan of John Lennon and of the grunge scene of the early 1990's.So needless to say, I enjoyed the cover of "I Don't Want To Be A Soldier" by Mad Season (LAYNE STALEY'S VOCALS ARE ALWAYS AMAZING) and "Steel and Glass" by Candlebox, but for me the best track was "Working Class Hero" by The Screaming Trees.Mark Lanegan's voice is unbelievable and this cover is closest in my opinion to the original in quality.A pleasant surprise were Mary Chapin Carpenter's surprisingly good cover of "Grow Old With Me" and the cover of "How Do You Sleep" by The Magnificent Bastards.Collective Soul does a very good cover of Jealous Guy.Now, on to the bad.No surprise The Red Hot Chili Peppers would be found here with their cover of "I Found Out", I never liked "Power To The People", so I was going to skip it anyway, but The Minus Five didn't do all that bad with it.It actually shocked me that an established band like Cheap Trick couldn't pull off "Cold Turkey".Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I'll say goodbye to taste
Thankfully I was able to check this thing out of the library to try out, so at least I'm not an angry, ripped-off fan...just angry. The artists used and their renditions of these classics are as inappropriate as a hypothetical Liberace interpretation of Aerosmith, or perhaps a Manilow take on Black Sabbath.
3-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Superstar
This really should have included Bonnie Bramlett's (also the songs co-writer) soulful recording of Superstar instead of whatever that is on there. The Sonic Youth version sounds like Darth Vader on helium. The standouts here are: Shonen Knife Top of the World, Babes in Toyland Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft (a perfect song for Kat), The Cranberries - (They Long to Be) Close to You, 4 Non Blondes Bless the Beasts and Children, Sheryl Crow - Solitaire, Bettie Serveert - For All We Know. If you like any number of those artists this is worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take It At Face Value And Enjoy
I just don't get the polarized reviews regarding this pleasant little tribute album. The haters are either neurotic Carpenters-worshipers who seem to have insider info on the "cynical" nature of this compilation made by some talented artists of the mid-90s, or they are simply haters of the Carpenters as a concept. Look people, this album has some great music on it. The interpretations are respectful and are not pure rip-off copies of the originals, which would have been foolish. No one sounds like Karen Carpenter. What they are is worthy interpretations that show off the talents of the artists while keeping the melodic pop of the classic songs in question as their backbone. Japanese ladies Shonen Knife do a great indie power pop version of Top of the World, Sonic Youth's under water sounding Superstar is mesmerizing, Sheryl Crow and the Cranberries do sturdy renditions of Solitaire and Close To You, and all the other artists do credible jobs. This is simply a tuneful tribute album and a pleasant musical experience, for both Carpenters and non-Carpenters fans alike, for fans of classic pop melodies or 90s indie music. ... Read more

Editorial Review

No less a suspect pop-culture authority than Howard Stern has repeatedly proclaimed that "everyone loves lesbians!" But what do lesbians love? Rhino Records boldly claims to know the musical answer to that question on this richly eclectic collection of female artists compiled for a lesbian audience. And if that's a bold--if readily transparent--marketing move, it shouldn't distract one from the charms of this cross-genre compilation. The songs here run the gamut from acoustic angst (Ani DiFranco) to pop (Wendy and Lisa, Jill Sobule), MOR (Taylor Dayne), folk (Two Nice Girls), and dance (Fem 2 Fem). k.d. lang contributes "Just Keep Me Moving," while cult fave Phranc gives Herman's Hermits hoary"Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" a new slant. The emotions range from intense eroticism (particularly Janis Ian's sultry "Ride Me Like a Wave") to the steely pragmatism of Sandra Bernhard's remake of Paul Simon's "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover."Read more

i love this cd.has some of the best songs ever made for lesbians...hence the title.best song on the whole album is the last one...spent my last ten dollars on birth control and beer.that is one of the funniest songs ive ever heard.you gotta hear it.other great ones are i'll be your shelter,(sing it to my lover all the time) in or out, i kissed a girl, etc.but i think it should have had other really great ones like "perfect by doria roberts" "constant craving" kd lang "drive" by melissa ferrick...so many others i didnt mention but are much better than some of the songs on here.oh well...hopefully theyll have a volume two and well see those songs.if youre a lesbian then buy this album you need it.its really good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freaking great
This is an amazing collection of live studio music. The variety of songs and artists is wonderful, it will be hard to wear this out with such different styles of music on this cd. This station and KGSR out of Austin, Tx, do some of the best (if not the best) live compilation cd's that I know of. The bare bones version of Coldplay's Yellow is just amazingly soulful....the Dido contribution is a real surprise too, these are just two of the highlights, but the whole thing is so very good...buy, listen, and enjoy.

Radio station in-house recordings can be hit or miss. The Mountain and others have some really great productions.I wish I had passed on this one. The selections are poor with no production quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous live (unplugged) performances from the best artists
This album (the second in the "Sounds Eclectic" series) compiles some of the best works from one of the most eclectic radio shows there is: Morning Becomes Eclectic, which airs from Santa Monica's station KCRW (also catch the streamed version of their programs at KCRW.org). It's hard to pick one of the tracks above others: all in all, the album provides an excellent sample of some of today's best acts. However, I do have some personal favorites:Read more

I first bought this on an LP in about 1982, when I was 12 years old, at 'Zeds Records' in the middle of long beach, along with a 45 featuring 'Modern Warfare'. I have no idea what happened to my album, but still have the 'Modern Warfare' single. While playing this CD I realised the original album contained songs by 'Bad Religion', or am I mistaken? The music on this CD is absolutely great, and I was completely stoked to stumble upon this great, unique relic, as I had forgotten this album existed. I have many memories that come up listening to it, like getting arrested at an old 'Alpha Beta' grocery store off Redondo street in Long Beach, shoplifting liquor, to drink while watching 'Secret Hate' play a backyard party. Anyways, my opinion boils down to this:The bands on this cd are fantastic, unique, buy it, you will not be dissapointed! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Many Highlights
Most compilations are dodgy affairs, and benefit/charity releases are especially guilty, but this sneak hit in the "Red Hot + ___" series of AIDS-benefit/awareness releases was easily the best of the bunch, and presents a surprisingly freethinking travelogue of the rock underground, circa '94, just as that underground was cruising into mainstream consciousness.
2-0 out of 5 stars Normally I'm open minded
Sorry, this CD just isn't the exact genre that I was thinking. Buying the wrong kind of compilation was my mistake, but with the Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, i thought maybe it was going to be a little heavier than what it was. Turned out to be the light alt-pop bands from the 90's.

No Alternative is one of those CDs that you listen to on your way to work for a month straight, finally tire of, forget for a few years, and then remember all over again, listening to it on your way to work for a month straight. The beauty of compilations and soundtracks is that, when they're done right, they're diverse enough to keep your interest far longer than an album by a single artist ever could. I like this cd, I owned it before but broke it so I bought it again and decided to do a review. I think it is a good buy for someone unfamiliar with what 'grunge' was. This cd helps you to see some undiscovered artists that didn't really hit it big...The Trees are great, soft but still great Lanegan had the best vocals in the scene imo. Don't get this for the Nirvana song. And if you are expecting cheap Nirvana remakes, don't waste your time. The bands have unique sounds and this cd covers a pretty good variety of the different aspects of the Seattle rock scene.

It's facile to observe that the people who toss the phrase "family values" around don't have Limp Bizkit, Korn, Filter, or Primus in mind when they talk about wholesome entertainment. Well, duh. That said, this a solid collection for those who like the aforementioned bands and their allies, though just about all of this stuff is available in other versions. One highlight is Staind's heavy-duty "Mudshovel," though the best performances overall are from Limp Bizkit, which explains why they provide 4 of the 16 tracks on the album and no other act serves up more than 2. Tracks from Method Man and the Crystal Method weirdly break up the metal that dominates, and there's the obligatory acoustic bonus track, featuring Aaron Lewis of Staind and Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. 4-0 out of 5 stars Falls a little short, but has some redeeming tracks...
All in all the concept behind 'Family Values' is a great one...get the most popular bands that parents would never want their children to listen to and throw them on one stage.KoRn started it, then Limp Bizkit carried it on, and then Staind, so on and so forth. This effort, fronted this time by Limp Bizkit, falls a little short of the first album (fronted by KoRn) and the third (fronted by Staind) but it does have some redeeming value.Lets take it one band at a time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fans of nu-metal & alternative will enjoy this compilation...
I picked this CD up at my local music store several months back after seeing Staind and Filter were featured. I have since, listened to this album release and have quietly enjoyed the bands like Primus, Korn and Limp Bisqit who I rarely have heard of until now. The highlights for me were 'Mudshovel' by Staind and the acoustic 'Outside' sung in tandem by Aaron Lewis of Staind and Fred Durst of Limp Bisqit.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good bands, decent collection.
I would think this would appeal mostly to those who saw this tour, but it's still a good disc. I don't like it as much as the 1998 tour, but it's still good. "Limp Bizkit" dominates this collection, but there's still good songs from "Primus", "Staind", and "The Crystal Method". The live "Outside" is the bonus song here, and "Durst" also covers "I Would For You", which is an old "Jane's Addiction" song, though it's not near as great as the original. Overall this is good if you like the bands, otherwise it doesn't have much "Value". ... Read more

If you missed 1998's Family Values tour featuring Incubus, Orgy, Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Rammstein, and Korn, fear not: 15 tracks from the aforementioned bands, plus "interludes," add up to well over an hour of neo-metal-angst-rap that can be enjoyed without venturing into a mosh pit. The CD is a cool deal in that it contains the best songs from each lineup, including radio hits such as Orgy's cover of New Order's "Blue Monday," Limp Bizkit's breakthrough version of George Michael's "Faith," and Rammstein's incendiary Germanic ode "Du Hast." Korn's medley of older material and singles from Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hahahahahaha!!
The Family Values Tour is a joke, just look at the bands on here:Korn, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, and Rammstein.NONE of them are any good, as they're all pathetic nu-metal s***.Only 12-year-olds would like this.
4-0 out of 5 stars Orgy blows the comp. away!
And that's very true.Orgy had the best set here.KoRn was decent, Rammstein should have had more tracks as should have Incubus, but it was nice to see Bizkit drop some nice tracks not included on their albums like 'Cambodia' and 'Jump Around'.Ice Cube, no matter what you think, held his own here and is serves us a worthy track selection.Too bad 'Family Values' don't come around no more but with Limp sucking now a dayz it would be pointless.Still, this is a solid album with great live performances...could have been better but then again, it's very rare you hit something perfect.
3-0 out of 5 stars decent
its decent but y is ice cube here he is the worst performer but korn ruled i dont like bizkit orgy was good rammestien was good but only one song dont like incubus ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Different versions of one song
Almost 15 years after it's release "Tom's Album" is still available for sale and still one of the most groundbreaking CD's of it's kind. The CD contains different versions of the song "Tom's Diner."In brief, it's the same track with different lyrics and slight alterations to the track.Suzanne Vega is featured on the acoustic version and the version that radio picked up with the group DNA.Another popular version of the song Daddy's Little Girl by rapper Nikki D who raps about a girl who is a little too fast and finds herself pregnant. This was an original concept.I originally bought this album soley for the Suzanne Vega version but found several of the other versions pleasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!<
