why surf music died
While this may sound negative for the sake of bashing, i grew up with surf music and really like it.Heck I play it (as i imagine some of the people interested in this genre might too).WHile ther are one or four somewhat intersting cuts- this is quantity not quality surf.
surf mania!
The title of this alblum sounds a bit cheesy but the music in the CD is excellent. The songs sound much better on my stereo than the little speakers in my computer. This CD is a champ as far as giving you your moneys worth of songs. I could not find any songs I did not like to listen to and was very impressed with the Supertones songs on the alblum. While not quite as authentic as real 60's surf music I find the collection of songs here to be some of the very best of whats offered today in the modern day surf guitar sound.

This is a Great CD!
I picked this CD up after I purchased the other Golly Gee release "Rockabilly Rumble". Someone had recommended it and since "Rockabilly Rumble" was such a great record, I had to have this one as well. I was not disappointed at all. This is an incredible CD with almost and hour and a half of music! No boring tracks at all - and surf music can be boring. After listening to it all the way through I had to listen again and again. "War of The Surf Guitars" is definitely worth buying - even if you live in Texas and can't see the ocean ; ) ... Read more

Not Bad, Not Great
A passable collection of covers; some are excellent, a few totally mutilate the originals, and the remainder are mediocre imitations of Elliott.

this cd makes me miss Elliott - we lost him too soon. I like this cd very much but it is still sad to know that he is gone. this seems to be a heartfelt tribute and I don't understand how anyone could fault it. it makes me question their motivation to fault a sincere tribute from a small indie label when this tribute benefits the Elliott Smith foundation. ... The Ultimate Tribute to Lou
Truly inspired renditions of well known and lesser known Lou Reed tunes.An obvious a labor of love.'Satellite of Love', 'Vicious', 'How Do You Think It Feels' and 'Sunday Morning' are standouts!

Hurried Home Too Early
Warren Zevon had more to give. This (2nd?) album of his songs done by other artists is testimony to that fact. It is good that

Awwww, it's very, very good.To me it rates comparison with two other tribute albums, "The World's a Wonderful Place" for Richard Thompson and "I'm Your Fan" for Leonard Cohen.All 3 present tributes from lesser-known artists (Roughly Enforcing Nostalgia, anyone?) that somehow shine a little brighter than the tributes from bigger names on "Enjoy Every Sandwich", "Beat the Retreat" and "Tower of Song" - which are all worthy in their own right.
A worthy tribute album
This is the third Zevon tribute album. The first, "Dad, Get Me Out of This: String Quartet Tribute to Warren Zevon" (Vitamin Records, 2003), had its moments but cannot escape being typecast as a novelty item. In 2004 came "Enjoy Every Sandwich: The Songs of Warren Zevon", issued by Zevon's latter-stage record label, Artemis. Featuring the heavyweight presence of icons such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt, David Lindley and Ry Cooder, and Don Henley, as well as relatively newer artists like Pete Yorn, Steve Earle, The Wallflowers, Jill Sobule, the Pixies, Adam Sandler (doing a fine and faithful version of "Werewolves of London"), and Warren's son Jordan Zevon (who stands out from the rest with his soulful interpretation of his father's unreleased gem "Studebaker"), this record is about as good a tribute as one could ever hope for. There are also two versions of Warren's sentimental swan song "Keep Me in Your Heart", one performed by his good friend and sideman Jorge Calderon (backed by Jennifer Warnes), the other an instrumental rendition by Van Dyke Parks. Perhaps the album's only miscue is the whispered rendition of "The Wind" by Zevon friend (and fellow OCD sufferer) Billy Bob Thornton.

Song Change on My CD
There's a song change on my copy of "On the Edge." Song #10 is a different Pretenders song, it's "I'll Stand by You" instead of "Don't Get Me Wrong."

I Want to Get This!!!!!!!!
I want to get this CD! If I ever see it at a used CD store, I'm going to get it! I was introduced to alternative music by The Cure (They're not on here). This is probably the best CD to introduce you into alternative music!

Disappointed

1.)TLC:No Scrubs- A I love this song!!!
A Stable Collection Of Hits!
The first Totally Hits features a lot of top hits from superstar artists. I think is as good if not better than Now 3. TLC has the first track and they deserve it. No Scrubs was a huge, mega hit! That song is more popular than their record-breaking album! I also liked the slow Angel of Mine. This is Monica's best song and it is my second favorite song on this cd! Sugar Ray's Someday was a hit that doeen't make any since. It is slow and they sound like they're bored. Other bad tracks are Kid Rock's Bawitawba(I don't think I spelled that write),Santana's Smooth,NSYNC's A Little More Time On You, and 5ive's song. But I do like Cher,Whitney Houston,Madonna,Brandy,Usher,Deborah Cox,Faith Hill,and Barenaked Ladies. If you like R&B,slow pop,and little bit of rock you will love this cd.

Good Collection
A good collection of the hits of 98-99. I was especially surprised at the inclusion of "Angel" and "This Kiss" (in a good way). I was impressed with the variety of music. Deborah Cox, Faith Hill, Madonna, Whitney, and McLachlan kinda steal the show, but not to any large degree, which is another big surprise. Buy it
Seriously, its an amazing CD. Some ingenious covers that manage to turn a so-so Jam song into pure brilliance. Buffalo Tom's cover of "Going Underground" and Noel Galagher's take on "To Be Someone" aregood enough to justify buying this CD just for those two tracks. Though every track is at least enjoyable, if its not brilliant.If you like the Jam then theres no doubt that you'll love this CD.

Though a heart felt tribute to one of Britain's best and most inspriational bands could be thrilling, and judging by many of the names on this album, you would think it should be, this is rather tedious.Reefdoes the worst cover of "That's Entertainment," outside of myshower.Everything But the Girl does a xerox of the original "EnglishRose" without out all the teenage passion and innocence to give itmeaning.Ben Harper should stick to his dreary Hendrix pastiches, andGene's cover of "Town Called Malice" is a travesty.Why I betthey have never even heard a Motown record in their lives!The good stuffincludes Buffalo Tom's slowed down romp through "GoingUnderground", and Noel's acoustic kereoke of "To BeSomeone", which gives a true sense to the burnout behind the lyrics.Even Weller sounds tired on the hidden track.File under for completistsonly. ... False alarm
I don't know why I was under the impression that "Mama Kangaroos" was a choir and that "Philly Women Sing Captain Beefheart" would be a cappella... anyway - that is 0% the case.
a simple yet inspired concept
To the diehard Beefheart fan it would be easy to dismiss this set as travesty and pure novelty, however this misses the point. Most of the reworkings on this set bring out nuances of the originals that are easily overlooked. For me the delight has been listening backto the originals through the different perspective offered by these 'cover versions'
awesome tribute ......
........to cap'n beefhart as well as to the philly music scene.The breadth of female talent in this city (and showcased on this album) is quite impressive.

How to Rock a Tribute Album
It is SO incredbily hard to rock the house with a tribute album--every fan knows the disappointment of listening to a bland and flaccid compilation. Yet HOT HANDS more than successfully blends the many ways musicians have been influenced by the dark, raw power of THROWING MUSES/Hersh/et al. into a heady, exhilarating stylistic trip through 17 interpretations of MUSES tunes: it also RAWKS! Alternative icons get long-overdue tribute
A tribute CD is a tricky thing. On the one hand, fans of a particular band want to see their beloved artist treated with the respect they deserve, yet the contributors need to show how the band has influenced their own sound which can lead to radical reinterpretations of the songs. Tribute CDs also expose the fans of contributing artists to (sometimes) an entirely new band, so the songs need to stand on their own to create any kind of cohesive, listenable work. Hot Hands succeeds on all fronts. Although I was vaguely familiar with the Muses from my college rock days, I didn't really know any of their songs. Likewise, I was familiar with a couple of the contributing artists but the bulk of them were unknown to me. Not your average tribute disc!
Being only an early-period Muses fan and a Kristen Hirsh NON-fan, I was skeptical about the quality of this disc when I received it as a gift, especially after buying so many tribute CDs that don't do justice to music in general, let alone the artists they're trying to celebrate.BOY WAS I MISTAKEN ABOUT HOT HANDS!!There's such a wide variety of sounds on here, none of which mimic The Muses or Hersh, that it holds up on its own merits and makes me want to pick up some of the original material! ... At Least It's for a Good Cause
Well, here's your chance to show your level of political commitment.About the only good thing I can say about this collection is 50% of the proceeds from the wholesale price will benefit ACLU's lesbian/gay rights and AIDS projects.Rather than showcase the wide variety of gay & lesbian talent out there, they have filled this CD (two disc's worth) with maudlin folksie ballads (disc one) and novelty songs (disc two).The only artist with whom I was familiar was RuPaul, and even his contribution was bland.It's a shame ACLU couldn't follow HRC's example and create an exciting collection of music with a bit more variety to appeal to all ears.I'd buy HRC's Being Out Rocks collection instead. ... A Jawbox tribute is far overdue.
Jawbox was a truely original band.Their odd mix of post punk, math rock, hardcore, pop and jazz was mind blowing, and has never been perfectly repeated.

Great to have a collection of coooool bands and help abused kids at the same time.I knew the girl that this was made for and I am glad that something this good has come out of her passing, because she reallydeserves this tribute.The tracks all go well together, and some are kindof hard to find individually, so why not help out a charity and get somegreat tunes by your favorite artists?

Amazingly listenable and amazingly loving
I just got this today and I'm pleased, pleased, pleased.I'm a fan of Jason Falkner, Ben Folds Five and Jonathan Richman, but all of the rest of this stuff is great as well.A fine purchase.Cheers.
