4-0 out of 5 stars Great Album
Imperfectly is a great Ani album, but, like many of her albums, it takes a few listens to fully appreciate it.I was bored about halfway through the first time I heard it but now it's one of my favorites.Probably only worth the $15 for an Ani fan willing to put in the time and truly appreciate the artistry of this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of her best
I am the owner of around eleven Ani DiFranco CDs, and Imperfectly remains my favorite. This CD is a showcase of how amazing her music can really be. Every song on Imperfectly is great. As usual, the guitar is beautiful and the lyrics are thought provoking and well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars "the mainstream is so polluted with lies"
This is another of Ani's excellent earlier albums that earned her the reputation (at least in the eyes of anyone dismissive of those who think for themselves) of being just an angry, scary lesbian with a big mouth. Of course that description of Ani is utterly false, but when did these people ever let something like the truth get in the way of anything?

5-0 out of 5 stars psychedelic existentialism...
I bought this album about 4 years ago.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jim's a Gem
I bought this CD when it first came out in 2001 and sat back and waited for the accolades. They never came.It is one probably one of the most underated CD's in history. The music is quirky and strange, and immediately strking and impressive. But the greatness of this CD are the lyric driven themes of Jim White.I can't imagine anyone not being blown away by this fine work

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm sorry, but how has this not been discovered yet?
Think Dylan slide guitar with a steady slow blues style and a spectacular vocal harmony keeping the groove. When I search for new music, I preview the 7th song, and I was blown away by Bound to Forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have CD For Any Feminist
One thing about Ani's albums is they're always different.Really, other than the truth, you never know what you're going to get."Like I Said" brings us back to when Ani was just starting out in her amazing music career, back in the days where it was just her, her guitar and her head full of thoughts and emotions.Personally, I feel that of the six Ani DiFranco cds I have so far acquired, this is one of her best works. It's my second favorite right after "Not A Pretty Girl" and a must for any feminist. On this album, she tackles everything from freedom of choice to why having sex with someone isn't her obligation, no matter how thankfull she is to them, among many other personal ballads and lyrics that will really move you and maybe even influince your own politics.I'd suggest this cd to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty in its Purest Form!
Ani is unique in many ways from her music to her poetry. She defentally has opened my eyes to the world that we live in. I have listened and chereshed Ani sence the begining, all 14 years and all 25 albums or so,(I even met her) and I have seen her music evolve, but when i look back I always go to this album. "Like I Said" is a album of poetry and simplistic music of Ani and her guitar. The three most chereshable Ani songs are featured on this CD: Fire Door, Out of Habit, and mostimportantaly Both Hands. Ani's music has defined a generation. Buy it and you WILL love it. 4-0 out of 5 stars Classics by an esteemed artist.
Ani Difranco is now the patron saint of artist who make it on their own. Through her copious energy and sheer strength of will, she has become a popular icon, a heroine and an inspiration to many.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this Album
This is one of my absolute favorite Ani albums. The lyrics and melodies are catchy and the album is short (only about 30 minutes) so it's perfect for driving in the car or while tooling around the house. Her lyrics and poetry are as personally and politically relevant as always but there's also a really playful side (Blood in the Boardroom, Pick Yer Nose) that Ani doesn't showcase too often in her later albums. A more "human" Ani is appparent in this album than in any she's produced since. Definitely buy Puddle Dive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and empowerment:
I added this one to my Ani's collection relatively late (after Living in Clip and many others), and right now this is the Ani's album i listen to more frequently.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!
I LOVE this album! Ani is really brilliant and her writing inspires me so much. There is a lot of diversity on this particular record. Some soft beautiful songs like "Anyday" or "Back Around" and then there are some sprawling crazy acoustic numbers like "Born A Lion" and "Egos Like Hairdos"...all great! I love Ani's whole Righteous Babe Record label. Such great music! Check it out today! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The hits just keep on comming!
Brett and Rennie understand that darkness dosen't need to be all dark, nor strangeness wierd. These tunefull songs areclever, funny, and catchy, all the while hinting at the mysteries that lurk behind the ordinariness of day to day existance. Nothing like it.This is our third Handsome Family album, we love them all, glorying in the eccentricity. Besides, my wife goes all weak at the knees under the power of Brett's awesome baritone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zippy says yippie!
I didn't like this the first time I listened to it. Now I can't stop. Each time it gets better. There are few songs anywhere that uses a theramin to such perfection as does "Gravity". "Birds You Cannot See" , what lyrics, I have known about these birds since my childhood, I am glad someone else knows about them, now I feel better. "Cold, Cold, Cold", great winter driving through the mountains tune. My kids hate "country music" not that this is, and they usually comment on what i play, but when I put "Twilight" on they become real quiet, I mean really quiet. Maybe they think I finally went around the bend. I even hear my youngest mumbling along with this CD. Must be onto something.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surreal optimism?
I don't know how anybody could mistake songs like The Snow White Diner or Dark Eye as remotely "optimistic". These are classic gloomy and twisted Handsome Family odes to the dark side...and they're great! This is another fine release by the Handsome's...and I'd sell my two arms and my one good eye to write songs half as good as they do. Of course, I wouldn't be able to play them then, .... Anyway...if you like the other Handsome's discs, buy this one. It's classic dark and twisted stuff, just the way we like it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential music for guitar lovers.
Rather than trying to recap or extend the effusive comments of other Fahey reviewers, I'll simply say that I've loved this album (1967 version) since I first heard it about 1970.And I love it still. This is music to relax the mind: you can float on it, ride on it, travel with it, and keep it close by to your heart and inner ear forever. And now this new CD issue is really a treat, because the listener can hear both versions Fahey recorded, the one from 1959 and the (more familiar) one from 1967.Essential listening."Must have" music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blind Joe
I am totally and completely mezmerized by John Fahey every time I listen to this album. The production is shoddy, and the instrumentation is Fahey's lone guitar, but there is more going on in this sparse setting than on most albums with a full orchestra.
5-0 out of 5 stars A deserving classic
Of course this is a very influential album, but that's not what makes it valuable. It's just really, really good. Fahey modernized the blues/ragtime repertoire on the acoustic guitar, making it relevant to modern, mostly white audiences, and his style was plagiarized into everything from Kottke's drive to New Age blandness. What's really great about this, though, is that the old country blues is his touchstone for sound. To those who think fingerstyle acoustic guitar sounds like Windham Hill, it's going to sound harsh and aggressive. But then again, Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon would give them heart attacks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More essential music for guitar lovers.
There are a few solo stringed intrument players or "pickers" who are real GIANTS.We all have our favorites, and not everyone's "list" will be just the same. But I can say here without reservation and without fear of contradiction that John Fahey should be on just about everyone's list.He was an inventive master, a gifted synthesist who took standard folk-blues progressions and reinvented and reinvigorated them into his "American primitive guitar" style.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fahey at His Best
A gem of a CD, not only re-releasing a classic LP, but including earlier versions of many of the songs. Several of the numbers here, 'Some Summer Day', 'Stomping Tonight on the Pennsylvania-Alabama Border' -- how about that for a title? -- and 'When the Springtime Comes Again', are exquisite examples of what beautiful music can be played on a solo six-string acoustic guitar.

5-0 out of 5 stars In short, a miracle . . .
I cannot imagine having been without these pieces, auditory equivalents of Wyeth paintings-- wondrous strange indeed. This is work that can change one's life-- and it has certainly shaken my very foundations. The older recordings are eerier than those from the '67 sessions, which sound more beautiful. Sometimes, however, the strange is more powerful than the beautiful. What is this "otherness" he achieves? Listening to this album, I can almost smell death. ... Read more

Listen, I've bought everything they ever made, I've been to at least one show a year since I started listening to them, I know the words to pretty much all their songs, but... but... but...
2-0 out of 5 stars Only one good song here
And that would be the title track, which is very catchy and one of their best songs. It plays during the end credits; as for the rest of the album it mostly filler and hardly deserving to be called Belle & Sebastian. I hate that the opening credit music isn't included on this cd. They also should have had the exchange between Vi and Mr. Scott on here (yeah, you know which one I'm talking about...)

Because this 1988 album produced hits for others ("Passionate Kisses" for Mary Chapin Carpenter, "The Night's Too Long" for Patty Loveless), Williams is best known as a songwriter. She certainly deserves the rep: her "Side of the Road," for example, expresses the tension between loving another and remaining yourself better than any song ever written. But what makes this album so special is her voice. When she sings about wanting to visit "Crescent City," she packs more sheer longing into her delivery than even the greatest of songs could express. And, bonus, Lucinda Williams is chock full of great songs.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Lucinda Williams Album
This self-titled release by Lucinda Williams is still her best album as a whole. Every song is a gem and all the songs fit together nicely as a whole. I loved this cd so much I bought it on both cassette and cd when it originally came out. The tape died a long time ago, but the cd is still holding up well. Note that the original release of this album had 12 tracks on it. Any tracks tacked on after that are extras that were not part of the original song sequence.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential listening for anyone with a heart
Great to sing along to (and great to sing in the shower ;), great to drive to, great to cheer you up when you're blue and there to comfort you when you need it most. You'll feel like you knew every song in your heart when they're playing, even if they're playing for the first time. Some may say the songs are raw and simplistic, but therein lies their beauty. Each word is delivered with pure emotion, each strummed chord just feels right. This album still holds up for me after hundreds of plays, and is a perfect introduction to anyone that has not yet been graced by the talents of Lucinda Williams. She's amazing live too, go see her if you ever get the chance!

5-0 out of 5 stars Raw...and still the best
I just plucked this CD out of my "all time favorites" collection to hear "Crescent City" - the one song that floated in my head for days since hurricane Katrina tore the heart out of New Orleans. The longing to go there, missing the old days when "we used to..."are EXACTLY how I felt when this tragedy occurred.I always knew Lucinda had an incredible talent for writing - from the time I first saw her performing on Austin City Limits in the early 90s.To me, this CD is the epitome of good music because it is just enough to connect for most people - not over the top in poetry, but with far more depth than most country music, and no synthetic sound.I think of this CD as "raw' because there is nothing flashy about it.Lyrics are clearly from the heart, and instruments are played in a traditional and purely unadulterated form. You hear the fiddle, the drums, the bass, guitars, all orchestrated in a way that only the fiercly independent Lucinda could have done.It is perfect. This is what I'd like to see performed live again in an intimate venue. It is what I play on the porch on a hot summer afternoon. It will forever remain an "all time favorite" for me. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully packaged album masks Buckley's disdain for some of songs
I was not particularly aware of Buckley until I heard "Hallellujah" on a TV show.I bought this album since it had the longest version of the song on it, of any of his albums. What a disappointment. He seems to play it as a duty, showing little respect for a truly wonderful song.
3-0 out of 5 stars Decent live album, but...
I was and remain a fan of his first full LP "Grace", a pretty, if slight album that grew with each listen. His unforutunate death at such a young age is, of course, a tragic happenstance. But facts are facts; Jeff Buckley was a work in progress when he died. He had a long way to go, before he could live up to the "musical prodigy" hype that has been bestowed upon him by obsessesed teen/twentysomething girls who have his posters adorning their walls.Like Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Tupac before him, Jeff Buckley has now joined the ranks of rock matyrdom, and is being eagerly milked by greedy record companies and sold to horny, lonely, sensitive, misunderstood girls and boys who prefer relationships with dead icons over flesh and blood. Lets face it, if Jeff Buckley looked like "Skreech" from "Saved by The Bell", would anyone other that the extremely dedicated still be talking about "Grace" today? This live album, incidentally, is the best one to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars R.I.P. Jeff Buckley
It has been 9 years since his death and record companies are still releasing some new stuff about him. This album is his third live album and for me it's the best.Although it was recorded from a casette found after his death, the sound is absolutely perfect and you can easily feel the atmosphere. This album was recorded on 6th and 7th of July 1995 at the Olympia Theatre in Paris in 2 soldout concerts and has 11 great songs featuring covers of the MC5's 'Kick out the jams' and Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir'.This is precious for any Jeff Buckley fan,but if you have no idea about him this is a good place to start. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars i really like it!!
First of all, i do not think this sounds like a return to ani's her and her guitar albums. But I do think this is possibly one of my favorite of her albums, especially when i am in that mood, it is kind of a low key album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful solitude
In this album Ani does it all by herself: lyrics and music (as usual), production, mastering, mixing... and the result is undoubtedly beautiful. The melodies are sweet and flawless, the poems are strong and direct, the voice effects are enchanting. This is not the Ani you may be used to, but it's still empowering how she deeply and bravely analyzes and faces her feelings and sorrow.
4-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Workshop
I came across Ani Difranco's music through covers by guitar slinging folk girls, woman who were quite good at what they did and honored their influences. Then I listened to Knuckle Down, just last year. I was like, oh, so this is Ani Difranco. An all-powerful Amazon warrior, not just some sniveling girl (to quote the girl herself, all irony intended). With needs. And, I think, that is what Educated Guess is about: needs, needs not met, needs that expose us, and, finally, make or break us.

4-0 out of 5 stars "If You Don't Love Yourself....What's the Use in Someone Else....... Loving You?"
I don't know people. I don't know what I can say about listening to this album and have you TRULY understand what it's all about. With Robyn Hitchcock, I believe firmly in my soul (and with help from the illustrious barbershop quartet of guides I have at my disposal) that you have to be exposed to a certain amount of life's absurdities in order to appreciate him.You see, it is also my own belief that Robyn is a praying mantis in human form and, as such, one must tread lightly with criticism. I truly enjoy his artistry because while we may look at pop music like it was neo-classical art, Robyn decides to throw us many curves, putting 3 eyes and 2 noses on our vision like a left field Picasso! To categorize him is to confine him and we all know by now that Robyn Hitchcock can, at any time, slip away in to his own reality, frustrating us in our efforts to understand. But, with that being said, I can feebly attempt to tell you what I think is going on, not that it matters in the least. But, on a sensual level we all know one thing, and it's the music that counts.
4-0 out of 5 stars A cool, polished gem that gets overlooked...
Perspex Island marked a huge step in Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians' move from (at least in the U.S.) college radio act to major label players. Following the modest success of Globe of Frogs, it seemed that one more gleeming studio album with heavy promo duty would put the band over the top, so to speak. By this time, the warm friendship with REM was paying off in unintended ways; the band were invited to open on the US dates of the massive Green tour, which undoubtedly exposed them to a wider audience, but not necessarily the right audience for Robyn and company.
4-0 out of 5 stars Perspex Island
Perspex Island is one of my top ten favorite albums. I have a few of his other stuff, but prefer this one. It is one of those albums that makes me feel calm and happy when I listen to it. I know all the words on this album and have listened to it over and over for the past nine years. I finally have to replace it after all that time. Not only could I just envelop myself in the music, but I find his words sometimes profound and sometimes laugh out loud funny ("There are no jokes in the bible!"). This album isn't as fun as "Balloon Man" but is a better album than "Globe of Frogs".In addition to being one of my favorite albums, it makes me nostalgic and happy. It doesn't give me a headache (I must be getting old) and the lyrics are intelligent. So to summarize, this album makes me happy (have I said that enough?). I know I've rambled, but I love this album and can't explain succinctly WHY I love it... ... Read more

Erin McKeown's quirky, folksy music weds the intimacy of the coffeehouse circuit with the braininess of her daytime gig as an ethnomusicology student at Brown University. Accompanying herself on guitar, piano, banjo, and the odd sampler, this precocious Virginia native has crafted a winning album of original songs that range from the coy minimalism of "Queen of Quiet" to the genuine beauty of "How to Open My Heart in 4 Easy Steps."McKeown infuses her songs with a droll wit and a keen awareness of jazz, blues, and Tin Pan Alley traditions (how many 23-year-olds cover Rodgers and Hart's "You Mustn't Kick It Around"?). The topics of uncertainty and love has never been so subtly expressed as Erin McKeown has managed to do so, and in her debut proper 'Distillation' she explores swing, folk and Tin Pan Alley jazz with beguiling consequences. Acoustic guitar number 'Queen of Quiet' is the first and the shortest song, with McKeown's Deep South drawl adding to the uplifting mood set by this opener. 'Blackbirds' develops with a more of a jazz/blues style, delivered with a great deal of swagger, and she manages to do that to more or a lesser degree in every song. 5-0 out of 5 stars Hasn't left my CD player in 4 months
Wow, what can I say, the lady is the complete package, an intersting voice, the most original lyrics and the coolest guitar playing I've heard since Richard Thompson. Hearing blackbird once propelled me to buy Distillation and have not been dissapointed. It has occupied my #1 slot in my 6 disc changer for 4 months, obsessed? I guess!

She's the queen of quiet and soon the UK is going to see what the US has been keeping from them when her debut album "Distillation" gets a UK release in February. Already very popular and well known among the folk community of the states, this is the 24 year old Erin McKeown's first major release after her two successful 2,500 cassette only releases, a self-titled debut and "Monday Morning Cold" (1998) and. One of America's best-kept secrets and well worth the wait.Read more

Editorial Review

Kate Wolf's songs still ring true years after her death. This lovingtribute contains 14 heartfelt covers culled from the repertoire of thesinger-songwriter, who died of leukemia in 1986. From Kathy Mattea's sereneopener, "Give Yourself to Love," to Terry Garthwaite's near-tears closer,"Thinking About You," it's apparent that all involved in the project (from thecontributing artists to producer Nina Gerber, who collaborated with Wolf throughmuch of her career) hold Wolf in the highest esteem. Highlights here includeDave Alvin's gruff "These Times We're Living In," Nanci Griffith's mournful"Friend of Mine," and Rosalie Sorrels's sweet-as-an-angel version of "In China ora Woman's Heart." Editorial Review

Now a veteran of the New England singer-songwriter scene, CatieCurtis offers her most musically seductive album in 2001, but that'snot necessarily good news. Backed by longtime friends Jimmy Ryan(formerly of the Blood Oranges and one of the most tasteful, compellingplayers in folk rock), bassist Andrew Mazzone, and young guitar-slingerDuke Levine,Curtis pushes further towards the danceable folk-pop of Shawn Colvin andSheryl Crow, andpulls back from the close-to-the-bone songwriting that was once hersignature. With the exception of the Southern working-class portrait"Sugar Cane" (co-written with Mary Gauthier) andcloser "The Big Reprise" (a prickly meditation on divine injustice),Curtis mostly slips into the girl-meets-girl sentimentality of thetitle track, the adult contemporary clichés of opener "Run," orthe haphazard coffeehouse diary of "Patience." The latter is a virtuethese songs reveal too rarely. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant arrangements
I had not heard this artist before, but I bought this after listening to some samples. What strikes me about Catie is that her voice sounds almost identical to that of Edie Brickell. Many of the arrangements on "My Shirt Looks Good On You" are similar to "Ghost of a Dog" by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. The material is not quite on the same level as "Ghost", however. A few songs are quite nice (including the opening piece "Run"). Most of the rest of the first half are somewhat sophomoric and banal (especially the title track "My Shirt Looks Good On You", which is almost embarrassing) but pleasant enough. The album picks up steam again, though, about track 9, "Elizabeth", and finishes strong.
5-0 out of 5 stars This one grows on you . . .
This CD was obviously a victim of bad timing (it was released in September 2001) because it has not gotten the play it deserves. The first spin through this CD left me wondering whether I would completely "connect" with the songs and then I left it in my CD changer for about a week on random play and I found myself enjoying every song more and more, the more times I heard it.You will not be disappointed by this CD.Rumor has it that she also has an all-accoustic CD available only on her website.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise
I was sampling CDs when I gave this one a try.I bought it and have been thrilled with my purchase.I am really surprised there are some extremely negative reviews here. She is fresh and original which is hard to come by. ... Read more

Editorial Review

No musician ever applied a gentler touch to songs of murder, sex, andsalvation than MississippiJohn Hurt. The country bluesman enjoyed a career revival through the folkfestival boom of the early 1960s, and his influence continues to ripple, as thisvaried and vital tribute attests. Produced byPeter Case (who teamswith Dave Alvin on"Monday Morning Blues"), the album's renewal of classic Hurt extends from thedeadpan double entendres of "Candy Man" delivered bySteve Earle and sonJustin to Taj Mahal'strademark lilt on "My Creole Belle" to a surprisingly straightforward "Stagolee"by Beck.
