5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely sublime
This is quite possibly Lucinda Williams finest recorded work to date. I have no option but to award five well deserved stars. The songs and production are certainly not as immediately impressive as Car Wheels or World Without Tears. However, what we have is a superbly crafted and subtly understated work that rewards repeated listening through masterful and poetic use of lyrics, heatbreaking vocal expression, and near-perfect arrangements. It is wonderfully successful on all levels. There are no weak tracks, and I invariably listen to all 11 without skipping. The title track is a favourite; one of the sexiest things I've ever heard.

5-0 out of 5 stars "For Girls Under Heavy Blankets with Heat Rising."
This mournful, erotic album is my favorite of Lucinda Willams work.I'm not usually a fan of female singers who play guitar, but this lady is a real musician, a poet and an emotional magician. She writes her own music and lyrics -plays on her heartstrings, sings from her soul. Her rough but vulnerable, husky, cowgirl voice tells you all you need to know about late nights in bars, too much booze, cigarettes, and a long time looking - and longing - for that one guy.
4-0 out of 5 stars Angst, Beautiful Angst
Lucinda once again cuts an album that defies categorization - rock, folk, blues? I don't know what to call it, so I'll just stick with ''excellent'' and ''superb''. Essence is 100% pure Lucinda angst. And I love it. It doesn't have the range that Car Wheels does, but than again she spent 6 years on that album. She wrote all the songs on Essence in only 6 weeks. In Lucinda time, that's nothing! So it's no wonder all the songs sound like they're from the same place inside this great song-writer. That same angst-ridden place. Don't get me wrong though, this album is fantastic. And I'm very happy I didn't have to wait 6 years before she put it out :) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright...
Hard to phathom how this little doozy got started. So some college kids from Glasgow got together to put to music some penned up material from aspiring poet Stuart Murdoch, and the result was a very limited edition of about 1,000 vinyl copies of what became known as "Tigermilk". Usually this stuff gets a B+ by the instructor, is listened to a few times by family members and close friends of the 'band', then gets forgotten, and the students graduate and get real jobs or something. Hah, well, sometimes in the vast sea of college projects rises to the surface a creation that doesn't go away...or refuses to go away, as the case may be. Like the "Blair Witch" phenomenom, this quiet, unassuming set of 10 songs caught a wave -- a tidal wave so-to-speak -- and for its first few years of its existence, was spread mostly through word of mouth (and then through music file sharing programs, at least until more copies went into print) at an alarming rate. Why is that? What makes this record so special?

4-0 out of 5 stars Half polished, half sketches...
Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is so good, and, at the same time, so hard to listen to. Jeff Buckley had planned to go into the studio to record his sophomore album, My Sweetheart the Drunk, in June of 1997. He died in May. This album, a two-CD compilation of three studio sessions and a fourth unofficial recording session, was released posthumously.
5-0 out of 5 stars Disc 2 is just AMAZING!
This CD is one of my favourite CD's of all time. You people saying that the disc 2 is not worth listening to, you haven't got it, have you..? When disc 2 really starts with "haven't you heard" (the first two songs are remixes from disc one), it takes you to a totally unique experience all the way to the last chord is played.
5-0 out of 5 stars The masterpiece even Buckley missed?
I'll add a few thoughts for the person considering this CD, particularly who only knows the album Grace:The first disc of this set is a relatively finished product produced for Buckley by Tom Verlaine (with some subsequent minor clean-up).The second disc consists mainly of rough drafts for unrecorded songs, and should be considered as such. The second CD is not easy listening, and is really for the most devoted fans only (as is fully disclosed in the liner notes).

Editorial Review

It's the rare singer-songwriter whose emotional confessions rise above bathos to find true resonance with their listeners; rarer still the one who can connect their audience with the plight of everyday strangers. Suzanne Vega not only managed that feat on her unlikely, child-abuse themed breakthrough hit "Luka" in ‘88, but opened the door for a renaissance of intelligent, female folk-oriented music in the decade that followed. This 21-track anthology spans Vega's career before and since, a chronicle of cool, sharp-eyed detachment infused by a restless, oft-underrated sense of musical invention that spans club-mixes (the "Tom's Diner" here was originally a "pirate" deejay mix by DNA that Vega wisely adopted), Latin jazz ("Caramel"), electro-percussive rhythm explorations ("Blood Makes Noise," "99.9F," and ""Woman on the Tier" from the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to discover one of the most under-rated artists out there, start here...
Because Suzanne Vega has, over the past 20 years, produced some of the very best rock-poetry you'll find. An artist that's prepared to push things out to the edge lyrically without losing sight of the fact that what makes a song work is a great tune, an exciting, carefully executed arrangement and... beautifully sincere delivery. And, when she gets it right, as this compilation more than adequately shows, the results are quite stunning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Moving
How relevant could the female, quasi folk, New Yorkish musical perspective be to a man in Australia? I don't know but I love it. She is moving, personal, "feministic", sensual, chameleonistic, and above all- the tunes rock. She is not mainstream but will leave a legacy that is second to none. Nearly every track on every album is a gem or simply a pleasant few minutes of this short life. If any artists songs convey pleasure and pain concurrently it hers. Go for any of it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Generous Retrospective & Fair Assessment Of Works
After new wave, dance and more agressive sound of the early 80's, Suzanne came on the music scene during the mid 80's as the return of more acoustic, folk and new age music was on the rise. Suzane's vocals were quiet and her arrangements were simple, making her mark with her debut as a cross between her past Joni Mitchell and her contempoaries Tracy Chapman & Enya. With songs like Marlene On The Wall, Freeeze Tag, The Queen & The Soldier and Crackling from her debut and her classics from Solitude Standing Luka, Tom's Dinner and the title track, have lead her to more experimental types of music.

A much more quietly celebrated CD than her debut, Gillian Welch's sophomore effort assured fans of old-timey country folk that she was salt of the earth. Her songs speak with both plaintive yearning and a seasoned storyteller's moxie, urged on by her and David Rawlings's economical guitar picking and strumming. Welch's vocal timbre bears ideally twangy power, giving her a constantly strong vault into her similarly creative tales, which help place this CD clearly in the realm of the exceptional. Read more

Editorial Review

In many ways this collection, which compiles each of the band's out of print EPs from 1997-2001, is all the "greatest hits" you'll need by the Scottish combo. It's easy to take Belle and Sebastian for granted these days--they don't sound as good as they used to, and certainly it’s difficult to imagine them ever becoming as culturally/musically relevant as they were once upon a precious, fey little time. But this collection brings the listener back to a time when it was crucially important to find their import EPs, when no one else in the world seemed to be making indie-pop that was so full of sincerity and irony at the same time, nor as gorgeously crammed with orchestral elements and naughty-smart lyrics. "The State I Am In" has never sounded better, while "Lazy Line Painter Jane," which expanded their sound to include C&W-ish elements, is clearly one of the band’s best tunes ever (and perhaps a more interesting direction than the vaguely soulful one they took later on). The almost-rolliciking, smartypants "Le Pastie De La Bourgeoise" is brutal and elegant. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One excellent EP after another on 2 CDs
From the outset, it looked as though this collection gathering all of Belle and Sebastian's various EPs released in the late 90's and early 2000's was a very...very good idea. Considering that the EPs themselves are insanely difficult to find, having them all here on this portable chronological collection is great. Belle and Sebastian has always been a very good singles band (rivaling The Smiths) and the songs on their EPs are just as good if not sometimes better than what appears on their proper albums. This album is so definitive of Belle and Sebastian's sound, that one can introduce themselves to the lonely and most inflective of the bunch tendencies of Stuart Murdock's world without hearing a single song on one of their albums. Everything that defines Belle and Sebastian can be found on the songs here. From self deprecation to sheer vanity and the affecting melodies and the images they evoke, their songs are an emotional journey that an exceptionally few number of bands can replicate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tegan And Sara are simply the best.
I listen to a whole wide variety of music, neglecting the country and rap side of things. This is my first review ever written anywhere, but these girls need to be known.I can't define their music, someone said "folk punk", but it's boundless.Their music isn't held down by genres. Not only are their voices and songs unique and amazing, their stage presence and lyrics are serene. There's no description really that can cover them or their CD's, so just go to www.teganandsara.com listen to a free song, and then come back and buy it.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Heavy" in stars
Heavy starts of with a light, gliding through the guitar stings with a dexterity similar to that of a Mexican Mariachi guitarist. Tegans low, raspiness adds to the sheer intensity and focus of the rich guitar solo. The slight, almost imperceptible intervention of the piano at first adds a burst of emotion and amplitude to the song meanwhile enhancing the poetic lyrics, which are rich in metaphor for a missed love. The powerful inspiration of the lyrics that calls out for the "girls to be strong" and "unstoppable" is tied with the dramatic instrumental thus conveying a moving message of feminine power. The climax of the song is reached once the instrumental of the guitar, piano, drums explodes in a reaction of pure drama, heartache, passion and longing emphasized by the hoarse, yet emotional release of vocals screaming out "you're all that I want." A heart-wrenching denoument is reached leaving the listener strangely longing for their loves. Overall, the song delivers a message of lost love through the perspective of an angsty female.

1-0 out of 5 stars Snooze
If you like boring, cacophonous guitar, then by all means, listen to "Heavy" by Tegan & Sara. But I must warn you: if you decide to torture yourself by playing this song, you should probably wait for a night when you are plagued with intense insomnia because this song will put you to sleep. The repetition in the lyrics is rivaled only by the recurrence of a single sound produced by scratching a fork against a desk, although I think that Tegan & Sara actually considers it guitar. She sings about being unstoppable, but the stop button on my CD player begs to differ. I strongly do not recommend listening to this song unless you wish to punish yourself mercilessly. Seriously, just shoot yourself in the foot and you'll get the same effect. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars almost there...
I have to admit that I like the intention of the Avett Brothers music more than the music itself.I love the idea of bringing American roots music into a more hip scene, however, I don't believe they completely pull it off.I find the music a little lacking and the lyrics slightly sophomoric.Regardless of these observations, I still enjoy the overall album - it just leaves me wanting a little something more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty durn good
I heard the song "Colorshow" on college radio and had to sing it to the deejay to figure out the artist. It was worth my humiliation!I spend alot of time listening to music and very much appreciate finding 'new' artists with great talents. This is one such band. My music tastes range greatly from Nina Simone to Mozart to Guns and Roses to Outkast,Ben Folds,FooFighters, and the Beatles. If you love originality in lyrics and musical arrangement - songs with heart, passion, and the ability to groove your soul you must add this to your collection.

Even after 15 years of releasing albums on her own Righteous Babe imprint, it's hard to know what to make of Ani DiFranco. Some see her as a folkie-punk-bisexual-feminist-radical-crap-kicker, while others reckon she's merely Alanis Morissette with better lyrics. On her 15th studio album the truth just might be somewhere in between. She does dysfunctional family portraits ("Studying Stones") and broken affairs ("Lag Time") just fine, but she also manages to leave room for rambling, autobiographical beat poetry ("Parameters"). And then there is the music. Matching acoustic guitars with earthy funk rhythms and soft moonlight moods with out-of-leftfield song arrangements, it reconfirms the one label everyone can agree upon: fiercely original. Read more

A very good album with strong melodies and lyrics sung with a lot of heart. I hadn't bought any new Ani music for a long time. The last couple I had listened to did not seem to have the same intensity as her earlier material, but I decided to take a chance on this one and was thoroughly impressed. Unlike others that reviewed the album, I really enjoy "Seeing Eye Dog", it has a bluesy, gritty feel, but has Ani's signature sound throughout.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best of Billy Bragg is pretty good!
I love Billy Bragg's lefty politics, his rough, un-taught voice and his tremendous guitar playing, but most I just love his courage. He's a good, at times clever song writer - "Walk Away Renee" was a nice surprise, and you just should have him in your catalog.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome mat for everyone
Now there's a way for people unfmailiar with Billy get an overview of his music from above. I've loved his lyrical abilities and evocative music that fuses both a folkie sensibility and a gritty modern edge for a long time. Very few other present day bands can do this well. Outgrabe is one of the most successful, and they've clearly been influenced by Billy, the grand old man of this genre. I wish Billy all the luck in the world, and I'm sure this CD will draw new fans into his musical space.

1-0 out of 5 stars A POOR MAN's WOODY GUTHRIE.
Billy Bragg thinks he's a modern day Woody Guthrie, championing the poor working class. Unfortunately he is not.Not only is he a hypocrite by writing for the right wing press when it suits him, but i find his 'right on' attitude rather nauseating. This is a man that supports a certain Mr Blair and is proud to do so. Therefore i fine his music rather patronising to people that (unlike him) are really struggling. Mr Bragg wouldn't know real suffering if it crawled up and bit him. At least Steve Earle walks it like he talks it! Beware of songwriters who claim to be working class they invariably aren't! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good selection of songs
I am working my way backward with Beth Orton, I started with "Comfort of Strangers" and now "Central Reservation". Her work comes from so many different places, folk, rock, country, some electronic. I like it all so far, but am a bit partial to the folky stuff. I like the lyrics on this album, I find them poetic and moving at times. Most of her music does take a while to get into, but most challenging music does. I think her voice is in good spirits on "Central Reservation". I like all the songs on this CD, but "Sweetest Decline" and "Blood Red River" are the ones that move me the most.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beth Gibbons must be very lonely at times
Listening to the haunting "Show", the third song on "Out of seasons" I'm reminded in more than one way of the Australian singer Nick Cave. Beth Gibbons has the same chain-smoked voice, an unsatisfying eager for dark, sometimes even depressing moods and there is indeed something filmish, something cinematic about her lyrics.
5-0 out of 5 stars You cannot resist suffering like this.....
With it's subtle nature sound effects, creepy little choral samples and achingly beautful melodies, "Out of Season" casts its shadow over your unsuspecting heart. These tender poems are saturated with bleakness by Gibbons' voice and the ghostly sparseness of the acoustic instruments.

This 1996 album was a breakthrough of sorts for Dar Williams, moving her from the obscure folkie circuit to the obscure alternative singer-songwriter circuit. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Christians and The Pagans is superb"
This CD is a fine blend of nice vocals and fine insturmental work. "The Christians and The Pagans" is my favorite holiday song about tolerance and healing and restoring family ties.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite album of all time!
I often tell my husband that if I ended up stranded on a deserted island with only one CD, this would be my choice. Each song tells a story with incredible lyrics and intoxicating melodies.Dar Williams is a musical genius!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Album, Superb Songwriter
My daughter introduced me to Dar Williams in the latter 1990s and the "Mortal City" album was my first exposure to her striking music. I enjoyed it immensely and have been a fan ever since. Her folk/pop/rock sound is sophisticated and pleasant. Her songwriting, moreover, is poignant and moving and by far the contribution of Dar Williams that I value most.Sometimes her songs are amusing and sometimes they are moving and sometimes they are both at the same time. The best example of this on "Mortal City" is "The Christians and the Pagans." It tells the story of Pagan relatives visiting for Christmas and how the "Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table/Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able/And just before the meal was served, hands were held and prayers were said/Sending hope for peace on earth to all their gods and goddesses." Great stuff! A later line sums it up thusly, "now when Christians sit with Pagans only pumpkin pies are burning."

Editorial Review

The '80s folk revival yielded a diversely talented generation, some reared on the aesthetic and ideology of punk, some on their '60s singer-songwriter predecessors. They were looking for the directness of expression and connection with audience that stripped acoustic music promised. Michelle Shocked built an audience through her strident activist messages and raw, almost naked songs; she had the sincerity that the audience craved. Despite the militant cover--in which a cop is seen choking a protesting Shocked--the record is memorable for its reveries of childhood, its simple sense of hope, and Shocked's minimalist guitar and hoarse, youthful voice. 5-0 out of 5 stars Laudible Effort Salutes Bygone Oratorio
Definitely liked this CD from the first listen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reissue, Bravo Michelle !
In this reissue, she added a whole CD worth of bonus material. Great material too, and all for a reasonable price. I think I listen to Disc #2 as much or more than Disc #1. It came in a cool box with new liner notes. All handwritten it appears. I wonder if she did the writing herself?
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Original talent...God This Woman is Talented!
I ordered this on a whim based on other reviews. What a great purchase, and what an addition to my music library. I sat on my porch here and savored each song...having lived in Texas, having been to the Paradiso in Amsterdam, having lived in Atlanta and been to the old (sigh) Metroplex (God I'm old)...having...well, you get the idea...in other words, this CD touched me, which doesn't happen often. Thank you Michelle for such a wonderful production. Keep up the good work, I'm planning on buying more an more of your music...you are truly talented. HIGHLY recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tracy is a Genius
I have loved Tracy since she debuted Fast Car back in high school and I love her more and more as the years go by.She never stops making excellent music that inspires and touches the soul....this CD in particular is a real winner.I actually consider it a blessing that she is not on the radio where her music would become mundane and ordinary.Instead it's only by hearing about her through others that people have the privilege of listening to her wonderful music where you just can't get enough and it just makes you feel good. She's the best and there's no one else out there like her. That's a good thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dam, she is Good!
oh Tracy, you bless my soul. I have all of her CDs and love them all. this one is an early one, and she gets even better, but, if you are a fan, you must have them ALL. buy it, love it, you will like her music, if not, something wrong with you! (kidding) it's good though, ok.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cd~!
I am totally a new devotee to Tracy...Other than 'Fast Car' and 'Give me one good Reason', I had never heard any other music of hers.I have to agree with the last review and say that it is a darn shame that some of her other work has not been as noticed.Oh well....the ones of us who are willing to give good music a chance have some of the best music around to listen to with her.Crossroads is an awesome buy ~~Highly Recommended~~ ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fans can never be objective...
From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...This only thing stopping this collection from a solid 5 star rating is the fact that it includes remixes and some b-sides. Therefore, it ends up being a must have for fans missing some great tracks and too much for someone wanting an overview of Beth Orton's great music.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Beth Primer
As another reviewer says, this is a fine place to start lovin' Beth.If you don't know her, you should.Once you do, you will at the very leastlike her.She - IMHO - is one of the best artists to come along in recent memory. So do yourself a favor, and check her out if you haven't already.

4-0 out of 5 stars But it's not an album....
If you're like i was a year ago, and you are not sure where to put your money when it comes to Beth Orton, you'll buy this CD.This collection contains some of her best songs, with a few missing exceptions ("Carmella," "Paris Train," and her rendition of Cat Steven's "Wild World" come to mind), and is a great introduction to her work. It makes for a great gift to someone who seriously needs to be introduced to Beth Orton (one of the best female musicians of our time).
