5-0 out of 5 stars great dub music...plus great album cover art!
i might be the only person who has this dub remix album but has never heard the original Massive Attack songs! so, perhaps my feelings on this cd are a bit more free of speculation than the average reviewer...but i love this cd! i'm a fan of dub and i've only got a mild appreciation for Mad Professor's work; but this collection really sees his talents shine and his production values soar to new heights. each cut has a strange sound; stradling old dub ethics with some more modern stylings. the beauty of it is that the warmth of the songs is kept alive and it does not feel like a cold studio effort. well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM
Anything by Massive Attack and anything by Mad Professor is great by me.I love it all but not by itself, but in a mix with other genres.

2-0 out of 5 stars D-U-L-L
I really enjoy dub, from the old-school Trojan stuff up through Burning Spear, LKJ, etc., and I have a couple Mad Professor CDs. While sometimes overly busy, both have some fun, interesting stuff.I'd heard that "No Protection" bears little resemblance to "Protection." No problem, I thought, it'll be fun to check out what the Mad Professor brings to the project. Inexplicably, he abandons his usual kitchen-sink approach, and what we get here is dishwater-dull. The first few tracks are enjoyable, melllll-ow ear candy. The rest is aural wallpaper. (The last song is an absolute waste of time, but you'll likely be asleep by then.) Buy this only if you're looking for something to crash to. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From the ashes of Joy Division
O.K., I can certainly understand the criticism of "Movement," New Order's first album. Most of the songs sound like they're remnants from Joy Division, and both Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook, sound like they're trying desperately to conjure up Ian Curtis vocals in the wake of his unfortunate suicide the year before (1980).Most of the songs have that kind of doom-and-gloom feel, with eerie lyrics, so typical of Joy Division (i.e. from "Denial":"Here I am in a house full of doors but no exits/ In a light that is grey like the stains on my windows"; from "Truth": "Oh it's a strange day/ in such a lonely way/ I saw some children dance/ I watched my life in a trance").
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant
I have been a Joy Division (JD) and New Order (NO) fan since 1979.This CD contains the brilliant compositional transition from JD to NO; the music and the song composition are complex and go beyond JD achievement (sans Ian's great vocals, sadly missed)to centralize the synth role. A tad gothic in retrospective, I must admit; however i find of all the CD's from 79's Unknown Pleasure to 05's Sirens Call, Movement is still the one start to finish set that feels most intense, most unique and least dated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Musical identity crisis.
Common wisdom has it that 1980's "Closer" was Joy Division's final album since, after that time, the band changed its name to New Order. In reality, 1981's "Movement" was the final Joy Division album, and it just happened to be released under the New Order name. There's very little on this album that gives any indication of the stylistic changes that we could expect on following releases such as "Power, Corruption and Lies" or "Low-Life."

5-0 out of 5 stars This is BAD at their best
To me, this was Mick Jones at his best. Mick loves to experiment and get a little bit funky and creative and no BAD album is more creative and funky than this one. "C'mon Every Beatbox" kickstarts this thing into action and is one of the most upbeat and exciting songs you will ever hear. "Limbo the Law" and "Sambadrome" take the sound into a Brazilian alternative direction that will have you hitting rewind numerous times. There are a ton of samplings of movie clips mixed in with the dance music, in keeping with the BAD tradition. To me, It is a BAD that is a little more relaxed than they were in their first album. This album is not better than the first one, just different. I like this album, I like it a lot!

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
I thought about 3 of the songs were good.#2 is my favorite and that is why I bought the CD, Hippychick is a song I haven't heard since I was 10 yrs old. It's been great to hear it again after 13 years of not hearing it.That guitar begining was something I was never able to get out of my head.Overall, the CD is okay, not great, but I still like track #2!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorites...
I still love this CD as much as I did when I was in high school...it contains a little something for everything - fast & upbeat; melancholy & lyrical;techno-esque beats and fun lyrics. Not too deep, but good "convertible" or "summer music"

Simply put, this album is great through and through. The Charlatans UK have really put together an album that is worthy of praise. It is one of those albums you want to listen to over and over again.I am a fan from back in the day of Some Friendly and I am glad to see they are peak form again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best of late Charlatans
This CD definitely marks a return to the Charlatans I love. I have all of their CD's and I would put this in the top third. If anything, because of the first two songs (Blackened Blue Eyes & NYC). Other favorites include Muddy Ground, the Architect and Road to Paradise. The songs do tend to be slower than on past releases but who is to say that is a bad thing? They are not ballads, they are just a little slower paced. My one problem is with Sunset & Vine. While definitely not a bad song, I was expecting more from an instrumental. I think this was a good example where they could have sped things up a bit.

love'd it!!from electricity to live and die,are just one of the few of my favtys.I highly recomend this to all those 80's fans out-there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Synthsational.
I never thought much of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark until I got this collection. Now I think quite alot of them. This disc is simply a must for fans of early 80's music, specifically the synth/pop genre. I enjoy every track here, but there are a number of them that really stand out. "Enola Gay" was a big hit, and can be found on many an 80's compilation. "Souvenir" is a simple and almost moving song that I enjoy. "So In Love" was a nice surprise to me, as I've always liked it alot, but didn't know it was an OMD song until now. Then there's possibly their biggest hit "If You Leave", which was on the great "Pretty In Pink" soundtrack. However, to me the best thing on here is easily "Forever Live And Die". That song is just one of the magic 80's hits for me, with a perfect beginning, and overall one of the coolest of the decade. The rest is still a pleasure, and a welcome addition to my CD stack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits Failure
Greatest Hits compilations always fall short.I even find if I make one a year or so later it needs to be changed.I have to say this one is really good.I can listen to it straight through and both the early material and the late material stands up.I remember a review of their early work commenting that the reviewer hated synths, but recognized the quality of OMD'S so the album was OK, but they also hated their voices and made a joke about them not being blessed with good ones.Of course the thing I always loved about OMD besides their synth work was their voices. It is tough for me to understand others opinions many times. So even though I understand the song selection here, mine would be quite different.I would stick with "Electricity" and "Messages" from the debut.I like almost everything on the debut, but can't argue here.I always found "Enola Gay" to be flat.Great subject, but just can't get into it.I may have to pick this one for the fans, but to me "The Misunderstanding" is my favorite song off their second CD.I love this song. The next release has "Joan Of Arc", "Souvenir" and "The New Stone Age".I don't find the add on "Maid Of Orleans" that exciting and love the Stone Age song.It would be nice to substitute.Dazzle Ships has the obvious "Telegraph", and " Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Yellow Magic Orchestra Gone Bananas (in a good way)
It was a couple years back that electronic music producer Uwe Schmidt (aka Atom Heart) decided to take on the music of Kraftwerk and rework it through the focusing lens of cha-cha and meringue music. The resulting El Baile Aleman was much more fun than it really should have been (at least, coming from a fan of the originals), and Schmidt managed to create some more fun music in the same style on further albums (which were mainly comprised of original compositions).

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This album is refreshing, creative and moving, attributes that are rare in music these days. Everyone loves a catchy tune, and the Avalanches find a new way to entice you and move you in a new way. When I first heard this album I knew I wanted to hear it again. It is something you can listen to anywhere with anyone for any type of mood. This album definately has sentimental value to me because it brings back memories of a good period in my life, but that's not the only reason why it holds so much value. The music itself has the ability to create a mystical and mysterious vibe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute joy
Many people have speculated and argued about what kind of music is played on Hell's loudspeakers. I don't know the answer to that question, but I guarantee you Since I Left You is on a 24-hour loop in Heaven. This album is amazingly, unbelievably, mind-blowingly great. It is total and utter joy and freedom from beginning to end. Some people will tell you that this and that song are good, and this and that song aren't as good, and blah blah blah. They are wrong. Some parts of it may take a while to grow on you, but if you have any kind of soul it will happen. Besides, at its core it's not a bunch of different songs released on one CD, the way most albums are. It's one work and deserves, more than any other album I've ever heard, to be treated and listened to as such. It's well worth it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Already one of my all-time favorites...
This music is so refreshing. I agree with some of the other entries, you definately need to listen to it a few times before you make any decisions about it. Pay close attention to tracks 1, 2, 9, 10, and 14. In fact, my advice would be to play these first until you fall in love with them, then move on to the other tracks. They are definately funky. I'm always grooving my head or tapping my foor to this music, which is uncommon for me.

Intelligent, pulsing, and thoughtful, the latest effort by A23 (Tom Shear) is simply brilliant!
4-0 out of 5 stars ok for me
This is the not one of the best Assemblage 23 album but still good Since the first time I put it in my CD player, it slowly grew on me, and I listen to on a regular basis. My favorite tracks are Ground and Storm, both musically and lyrically speaking. But the album as a whole is a decent piece of work , and is goodto dance to!

5-0 out of 5 stars The bar has been raised...
It may sound a little fanboy-ish, but this Tom Sheer effort has become the standard by which all other music of this genre should be compared. More than two years after the release of this incredible disc, I still find myself listening to it on a regular basis. This is raw, emotional, powerful, and above all, FUN to listen to. Tom Sheer's career as Assemblage 23 shows a definitive progression... from the growling, angry, disgust found on his first album "Contempt" on up through "Storm", which is far more positive and upbeat. But don't get me wrong... we're not talking about fields of daisies and cute fluffy bunnies; not at all. Still, "Storm" shows a man who has come to terms with himself and his life and knows that he is in a better place now.

The mightiest of late-'80s Manchester ensembles had the world at its feet before entering the long, dark tunnel of litigation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Stone Roses - The complete stone roses
This album is a classic - world class!

4-0 out of 5 stars "Turns into Stone" plus alternative takes
About one-half of "The Complete Stone Roses" includes all of the songs (except "Simone") comprising "Turns to Stone," with the exception that "Fools Gold" (the full version, of course, is available on the U.S. version of the debut), "One Love" and "Something Burning" are abridged to eliminate most of the instrumental part, so that all 21 songs can fit.In my review of "Turns to Stone" (which I also gave four stars) I mentioned how the early Stone Roses songs, as well as the B-sides, clearly demonstrate how they were influenced by poppy sixties bands such as Herman's Hermits and Gerry and the Pacemakers on the one hand, and psychedelic bands such as The Byrds and Jefferson Airplane on the other. But, especially with their monumental debut album, the Stone Roses would incredibly expand their sound, and influence so many British bands that followed.

If your first thought upon hearing of this release was "What the heck is British dance-lounge-pop act Saint Etienne doing on an American jazz label?," you are not alone. When you discover that the record in question is a full-on concept album and that David "Rock On" Essex is on the thing, you might wonder if the album might be sort of a muddled mess. And it is, though not in a bad way. Vocalist Sarah Cracknell sounds great throughout, but except for "Stars Above Us," the more straight ahead dance-pop songs fall a bit flat. But the rest is great, maybe even the band's best yet. More than half the songs (which offer slices of life in a housing project on the outskirts of London kind of like that famous Georges Perec book) do achieve an ideal of jet set sophistication. The songs pit house rhythms with sardonic name-dropping lyrics, vocal harmonies worthy of the Association with swooshy synthesizers, and big guitar riffs against whispered voices. It's swank!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the version to have!
I am a big saint Etienne fan, they are one of my favorite groups. However, I had criticism of their new CD when it was released last year.Although it contained many good tracks, overall I felt the album was too confectionary (too perfect) for me. One of the things I always enjoyed about Saint Etienne was the uniqueness of their music, the edgyness of some of the songs, the instrumentals, etc.Now with the US version I decided to buy so I could downloaded it to my computer. Then after listening to it, I realized I never heard many of these songs.Dream Lover, Oh My, and I'm Falling are all new songs.Relocate & Bird Man of EC1 have been REMOVED from the US version! The three new songs are awesome, and changes my perspective of the new CD completley.I find it very interesting that Saint Etienne did this, it sure made a better CD!While some of the same songs are still for me not quite as good as stuff from their best CD's like Sound Of Water, Good Humour, etc, the US version is a great CD (true alternative pop at it's best). I love Saint Etienne! Now I hear there are also TWO MORE CUTS from these sessions available only on the Japan release.I look forward to hearing them someday as well!

4-0 out of 5 stars Take a Trip
Saint Etienne legitimize their aging pop star status with the concept album "Tale from the Turnpike House." Very wise decision as the band are now moms and dads and can't play to the club crowd forever.....or can they. I'd say they succeed terrifically with some of the most fun pop they have created in years. All the essential Etienne elements are here on the disc with the stand out track being "Stars Above Us" -- classic Saint Etienne. Pure Pop. Pure Abandon. Don't think Saint Etienne have ever laid claim to anything else. As for the psuedo music "critics" like the post from C. Anderson below IT AIN'T THAT DEEP SWEETIE! As for their relavance well they've been around 15 years now. This is music to be enjoyed and have fun with. Bitter critics need not apply. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great guitar-centric but still 'electronic' tunes
Jonny Marr's guitar is all over all of these tracks and it adds a nice dynamic sound to the synths. The lyrics are pushed back in the mix and a sometimes substantial reverb is placed at the front. The tracks might be a tad too long.
5-0 out of 5 stars Electronic fans rejoice!
My reviews tend towards the short and sweet. This one will be no different. If you love Electronic, you'll love this disc.Fans of Electronic should also check out:Monaco, The Other Two & of course ... New Order.

4-0 out of 5 stars King
An excellent album from start to finish, though Prodigal Son is a lost cause. The addition of two superb b-sides (Warning Sign and King For A Day) plus a throbbing remix of Make It Happen and some revamped artwork make this a very appealing package. Go for it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here..
..if you're a fan of any of these bands then you've already got these remixes (or heard them at any 80's nite).

4-0 out of 5 stars great retro cd
there are some remixes that can't be found anywhere, so buy IT!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Collectors Already!
I've been a DJ for over 10 years and frankly I'm real tired of the same old versions of the great 80's tunes we're so used to. These remixes are familiar enough to satisfy your clients AND YOU!

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for those who like DM in all their manifestations
I agree - if you don't like electronica or dance, you will probably hate this CD (I have not heard the entire 3-CD set, just the 1 CD version). But, if you hate that type of music, I would be surprised by the fact that you liked DM.I thoroughly enjoyed this CD, even more than I thought I would.I have a mixed tolerance for remixes so I was not sure I would like the CD.However, I was pleasantly surprised by the range that I heard on the CD (even if it was all electronic).I was espcially blown away by "Halo" and "Enjoy the Silence."Like another reviewer, I agree that "Barrel of a Gun" is positively hideous but that song serves as the exception not the rule for this CD."Route 66" and "Just Can't Get Enough" are wonderful throw backs to the originals.Unlike one reviewer who felt that these remixes were simply extended versions of the originals, I would disagree in several places ("In Your Room" is a fantastic example of a completely reworked song.)I too would like to have seen something after Ultra on this album but I suppose that is simply more incentive to buy the larger CD compilation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode Remixes 1
This is a one disc set of a slimmed down version of the three-disc remix set which is available for a lot more money.
2-0 out of 5 stars Get the originals instead
The members of Depeche Mode know what they're doing. Most, if not all, of their songs are perfectly produced and it's difficult to improve on them (that means you, Marilyn Manson.) There are some really good remixes on the 3 CDs. These are the mixes that don't put in stuff just because they can - they're clean and simple but add another level to the song (the Air remix to "Home" and "World in My Eyes (Mode To Joy)" are the two best.) Most of the mixes, however, are just the same remixes that I wouldn't even listen to in a club - they're overworked and tired. Skip the remixes and get the originals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remastered 'Flowermouth' is an Excellent Purchase
An album far "advanced" for it's time. Originally released in 1994 on the "One Little Indian" label, the 2005 remastered version pumps out Steven Wilson & Tim Bowness' purely genius 'Elegant Dreaminess' talent. Both my '94 and 2005 versions of 'Flowermouth' are sitting here in front of me at my desk as I type (for easy reference). In my opinion, "Flowermouth' and 'Wild OPera' are No-Man's 2 best recordings to date. 'Flowermouth' takes you on that mesmeric rollercoaster ride of Euphoric and dramatic music, making it a very moody & brilliant album.

3-0 out of 5 stars only the m83 remix.........
now Playin the Angel is 100%, suffer well is not the best song from it (mostly because of Gahan's weaknesses in songwriting: the lyrics and the melody are poor, sorry, David you are the singer, let Martin write the songs), the video is another disappointment, even when they finally get back to Anton Corbijn, this video is meant to be hilarious, it is however more like redicilous, Corbijn made a good job for coldplay's talk anyway, he could have done something better for his favourite band as well.
1-0 out of 5 stars The mixes on this are disappointing
I have to agree with most of the other reviewers. While the song itself is a strong one, none of the remixes do it any justice. Gone from almost every mix is the guitar riff which makes the original song so good!
2-0 out of 5 stars Aviod this release
What can I say, BORING>DM is my favorite band, but this remix CD is way below par.The original song is way better than the poor remixing on this CD. ... Read more
