On their third album, Disturbed don't as much break out of expected patterns as show their potential for doing so. Fans eager for more of the band's patented fist-thumping gruel will take satisfaction in the album's opening (and anthemic) title track, plus "I'm Alive" and "Forgiven." The band shines brightest in the record's early moments, where "Deify," "Guarded," "Just Stop," and "Stricken" demonstrate that this unit's capable of discovering a song's subtleties Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sickness In Unity
Disturbed. Yet another triumph from the band who, since their debut album "The Sickness", have given rise to some of the freshest, inspiring, music to the hard rock scene since perhaps Korn.David Draiman's distinctive growl, combined with Dan Donegan's crushing riffs, and the thunderous beats of the percussion section provided by John Moyer on bass & Mike Wengren on drums, allows for complete mayhem, giving us the album we've been waiting for. While their debut album, "The Sickness", gave us a glance at the darkness which may or may not lie within each of us, the band's sophomore album, "Believe", provided a much more melodic effort, proving the overall range capable of the Chicago based band. While some fans criticized the band after the release of "Believe", arguing that they "lost" their heaviness from "The Sickness" in favor of a more radio friendly album, ( "Down With The Sickness" & "Stupify", two of the first singles from the debut album, received plenty of airplay by the way), they might have been surprised when Disturbed received the infamous "ban" from MTV, due to the suggestive nature from the video of their first single, "Prayer".An odd three years later, Disturbed have returned with "Ten Thousand Fists", a true piece of talent, testament to many critics who first dismissed them as "just another nu-metal band".This album provides the true Disturbed fan with a beautiful mixture of the darkness given from the debut album, and the melodic harmony brought forth with their sophomore effort.Another aspect differentiating this album from the others, are the guitar solos shredded forth by Dan Donegan, most notably on the tracks "Stricken", and "Overburdened".This is something rarely found in most hard rock/nu-metal bands today, as Donegan's solos are a breath of fresh air in a rock era dominated with one-finger chords.A defining characteristic of the band is its ability to capture human emotion and behavior, growled out by David Draiman's sharp, staccato, lyrical and singing ability, whether it is rage, sadness, hope, or violence."Stricken", one of the album's first singles, relates what everyone experiences at one time or another, betrayal and the distrust that lingers."Overburdened", another memorable track which many refer to as the band's first ballad, gives us the unique lyrical ability only Draiman can deliver, as there is hardly a scream or growl to be heard.
3-0 out of 5 stars 3.7 not up to Disturbed par
This CD is good, but it doesnt come close to the intensity of "Believe". The songs like "bound", "Prayer" and "Breathe" arent here. The production and mix isnt quite as good and there are more cheesy keyboard noises on this cd. That pisses me off because it kills any intensity a song may have had. the songs are decent enough, but the stupid cover song "Land..." is lame.. Desperate cry for airplay... I hope for a much better effort next out, but this cd does have its moments. Just not nearly as many as its predecessor..

4-0 out of 5 stars Disturbed still trying to stay popular.
I've read some reviews of this album. One says he can't play it on any cd players, ps2, e.t.c, one said they suck because they gotten worse with the music and lyrics, one says there the same as the last two albums, one says they suck for having politics in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
There is something very cinematic about David Gray's "Life In Slow Motion". It begins like a dream drifting back in time - like snow falling on a quiet troubled world (that's what I'm feelin). The next song "The One I Love" is a poignant love song from the lips of a dying man. Next song - depression - "honey lately I've been way down". What follows are more songs of depression, desperation, and beauty. What a soulful voice David Gray has. "Life In Slow Motion" is very well produced - with piano, strings and the occasional well placed synth. It sounds contemporary and yet old at the same time. I love it - I think it's his best album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and mellow
David Gray has always been a favorite of mine. Very mellow songs but great for work or just relaxing.

5-0 out of 5 stars David Gray takes us on a magnificent journey....
David Gray's - Life In Slow Motion - takes us on a journey that only has a beginning and never ends because you will never want it to end.Listen to the haunting "Alibi" one time; or the oceanic "From Here You Can Almost See The Sea" (subtitiled by me: Just Another Fool In Love); or the powerful, "Now and Always" -Listen once, I dare you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Godsmack IV: Back to Basics
I have enjoyed listening to the alternative hard rock group, Godsmack for quite awhile since listening to their album 'Awake. In this 4th album release self titled 'IV', Godsmack retained its right and proper path in maintaining its familar rock/metal sound. Why should a band experiment if what they have going at the moment works for them? Instead of changing, Godsmack have decided to confirm and strengthen their case. Sully remains lead singer and driving force behind this quartet of rockers. His vocals retain their strong features that carry each song richly.
2-0 out of 5 stars How can aggression sound boring?
Godsmack has pulled off a feat: making tortured, aggressive sound, innovative production, quality musicianship and clever lyrics seem so ... boring. Their anger, their sabre-rattling at imagined enemies, it doesn't feel like they believe it themselves. There is a lot of squandered potential here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Godsmack stays innovative with release of IV
Many times in the rock band realm, bands try and expand their direction and vision. They try to change the tempo, the sound, and anything to try and garner more of the wind that their sails have captured in the past. Many don't make it as fans that want more of the same formula often times sneeze at the change in direction. With IV, Godsmack still retains some signature sounds in sonic dire that is poetic and solid, while taking the edge off a bit here and there that was so prominent in past recordings. In all reality, it is not much change as we have seen this band progress to this point since the release of their self-titled debut album in 1998.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharing the Blessing
There are some bands that one is happy to hear the first time, and there are others that make one feel blessed. Listening to this Decembrists' CD, I reveled in my good fortune; what a wonderful world we live in that can yield music this good.
5-0 out of 5 stars We live this close to death
An astounding debut album, CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS became the foundation upon which the witty, eloquent Decemberists six began to build their empire. Trying on this album is like buying new clothes (a shopping metaphor, witness me aghast!) - at first they're stiff, they don't fit comfortably, and you look a little awkward in them, but once you've broken them in after a few wears they're worth their weight in gold.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Contemporary Classic
This album is the total package that 1 looks for in an album.First, musically, it's pop music, but a different kind of pop.Kind of like the Beatles doing Sea Chantys of the mid 1800's.Lyrically it follows many of these same themes. It is interesting to note that Collin Meloy, the lead singer, wanted to be a novelist before forming the band, and it shows with the lyrics.Every song tells a story that is humorous, ironic, and heart wrenching in every way imaginable. It truly takes the listener along for an experience; a rarity these days, when everyone is so concerned withdeath and trying to be serious, then getting in the way.Overall, a great buy, and soon to become revered as a classic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Beautiful Album
I, like Beck as he wrote this album, recently seperated from my girlfriend. As most people know this can be extremely depressing and heart wrenching. And although i don't give all the credit to this album, it deserves a lot for helping me get through it. The album is a work of art even if you're not experiencing a break up. But if you are, you will truly connect with Beck and what he's trying to convey. Some of his lyrics made me feel like we shared the exact same emotions when thinking of our failed relationships. It's very comforting to be honest. You can hear the depression and hopelessness in his voice. His whole world must have been shattered when he split with his girl. Every song on this album is brilliant. The Golden Age, Paper Tiger, Guess im Doing fine, Lost Cause, Lonesome teas and Around the Bend are true standouts. One of my all time favorite albums, a real masterpiece of sadness.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterwork
After repeated listens, this album gains greater and greater depth. With only a few listens, you think you are listening to a Blues album with slick production. In a while, however, you will see that Sea Change is also an incredible melding of Country and modern Electronic.Beck seems to have a very strong respect for the Country and Blues of yesteryear, but he certainly has an ear for what is to come. The first minute of "The Golden Age" is powerful enough to send you back into our country's wild younger years, but Beck is not looking back.We all know he is saying goodbye to his ex-girlfriend, but he is really sending out a farewell for Blues, Country, and the young, wild innocence of us all.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's Good, but Overhyped...
I was expecting something brilliant because of all the hype surrounded by this one album. Beck is a good band, I wouldn't say that they're immensely talented, but they have some great songs. Frankly, I found this album boring. That's not to say that the lyrics and the music aren't beautiful, but at times all the songs come off as sounding exactly the same. The fact that they all have the same theme-sadness- doesn't really help either. As somebody has said, there are more ways to express sadness than one. Beck just keeps using the same lazy, depressed, bummed out sound throughout each song. It almost puts me to sleep with each listen. I think Beck has better songs and albums out there. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars only because I haven't listened to all the songs yet!
I've been waiting for Rosanne Cash to find her voice and break out with another stunning album since "The Wheel." I find great similarities between that album and this one: The thoughtfulness, the incredible soulfulness, and the intertwining of sorrow, passion, longing and questioning. Add to that a fiery edge on several of these tracks (such as you don't really find on the more meditative "The Wheel") and you have a stellar album. I have not listened to the entire album as of yet, but what I have heard has convinced me to make the purchase. This is by far the best music Ms. Cash has released in many years; in fact, in my opinion "Black Cadillac" outshines "The Wheel" and yes, possibly even "Interiors" as a coherent, thought-provoking and emotionally provocative album. As for it's dark content, recent losses in my own life cause Ms. Cash's songs to resonnate in my heart and soul with even more power. I needed this album at this time in my life. As well, it's great to see Ms. Cash at the top of her form once again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A dark ride
Rosanne Cash's meditation of the loss of life and love (her father, Johnny; her stepmother, June Carter Cash; and her mother, Vivian Cash Distin) is here darkest album since the divorce chronicle of "Interiors." She calls into question both God and herself on such songs as "House on the Lake" and the title track. Like some of Emmylou Harris' best work (like the recent "Red Dirt Girl"), Rosanne has moved to the far fringe of country and given her music an both a dose of intelligence atmospheric edge. You won't find any lighthearted 'redneck girl' stompers here. In fact, "Radio Operator" is probably the closest thing to a generic country song on "Black Cadillac."
4-0 out of 5 stars Another great one from Rosanne
Since she gets virtually no radio-play in our area I always look forward to her new releases. This one was clearly in the making for some time and provides a reflection of things going on in her life; as well as issues in the world around us. A worthwhile addition to your collection. ... Read more

It may be too cynical to assume Hybrid Theory changed its name to Linkin Park in order to appear right next to Limp Bizkit in your local record bin. But rock-rap workouts like "One Step Closer" and "Papercut" do make Linkin Park a comfortable fit with Fred Durst and his ilk. Producer Don Gilmore (Pearl Jam, Lit, Eve 6) and twin vocal threats Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda serve up industrial-strength rap and rock melodicism with equal aplomb on this woulda-been-self-titled debut effort. "Points of Authority" aims to sound like Trent Reznor wanking it up with Lars and company, whereas guitarist Brad Delson's Edge-y harmonics help "In the End" and "Pushing Me Away" evoke a dark romanticism akin to A Perfect Circle. Curiously, the band gets by with no bass player, while sample-happy DJ Joseph Hahn's step into the spotlight on the instrumental "Cure for the Itch" suggests a potential for eclecticism that could help Linkin Park outlive its seemingly transient genre. 5-0 out of 5 stars angry why Wait?
Maybe this is angry music, but its not anger contained and bottled and packed in an album with some metro scrawl cover art to envoke nu hipsters into buying another release of angry music. What I'm saying is these songs will having you singing along like a cat in a ball of yarn in no time. From the first to the last track, nothing but exceptional, and the best vocal delviery of the century! Voicing the truth that I as a listener am futile in any attempt to voice my true inner emotions that fuel my anger, atleast unable to voice those emotions as long as I have this cd playing loudly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Linkin Park's Theory
The rap techno group Linkin Park made their debut back in late 2000. The band consisted of two singers, a tenor and barritone. A drummer, bassist, guitarists, and a talented keyboardist back up the two singers with their rhymes. Linkin Park has a very distinct sound of a rap lyrics sung on top of heavy electronical rock progressions. The end product is well worth hearing and HYBRID THEORY is a great piece of work for this type of genre. The rhythm section is not anything really special for this record, but it works for the very melodic vocals given by Chester Bennington. The thing about this album, is that its sound was still in the experimental stage. It is a major work that helped pave the way for future techno fusion genres. HYBRID THEORY is a good album, and one that should be given some attention.
1-0 out of 5 stars not rebellious or challenging
this cd sounds like anything else in the past 10 years: 4 chorded pop punk, simular vocal melodies that follow the expected pop sound, and the worst and most cliche lyrics ever.

Five for Fighting is actually just one guy with a rather substantial chip on his shoulder who's taken his name from the amount of time a hockey player spends in the penalty box for fighting. Los Angeles native and erstwhile prodigy John Ondrasik really knows his way around a melody, bolstering it with a dramatic sense of timing and rhythm like a more modern and hipper Elton John. And that defiant chip does makes for powerful poetry, although oftentimes he sacrifices logic and clarity for the sake of iambic pentameter. While "Superman" is a catchy affair about the restrictions of being superhuman and the desire to belong ("I'm only a man in a silly red sheet looking for special things inside me"), it's doubtful that anyone who ever read a DC comic would believe that Superman would ever be "digging for kryptonite on this one-way street," since a loose fragment from Superman's home planet might turn him into a blubbering infant or a giant ant. At best, Five for Fighting follows in the narrative-based path paved by Counting Crows. Read more

For all his tattoos and bulked-up frat-boy persona, singer Bradley Nowell had real soul, which made his fatal heroin overdose even more tragic. There's more to this Long Beach, California, trio's debut, released shortly after Nowell's death in 1996, than white suburban punks imitating Jamaican ska music. The band comes up with great songs, notably the catchy MTV hit "What I Got"; spooky dub-reggae undertones, produced by the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary, to go with the snappy horns; and surprisingly progressive lyrics that attack sexism and other social ills, especially on "Wrong Way." Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, obvious forebears, Sublime become slightly tiresome after 17 songs, but the band is great in short doses. Read more

Editorial Review

This big rock candy mountain of an album justifies some if by no means all of the poses and pretentious statements made by Manchester's natural-born rock & roll deities. A dramatic attempt to rekindle the flames of the original British Invasion, Read more

Editorial Review

Was it homesickness that compelled longtime Los Angeles resident k.d. lang to fashion her one-woman campaign for north-of-the-border nationalism, or just plain good sense? All Canadian content has long been a mainstay of the Canadian Broadcasting System, but few have selected their material with such a fine hand and a high aesthetic. The expatriate singer has taken great pains to create a sophisticated homage to her Canadian roots, elegantly reinterpreting 11 songs penned by some of her more illustrious countrymen (and women) such as Jane Siberry, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. The idiosyncratic chanteuse turns Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" into an aching monochromatic lament, exploring new tributaries of pain that didn't exist in the original, while recasting Neil Young's "Helpless" into a haunting anthem of memory and comfort, all the while sounding anything but helpless. A gorgeous love letter to her brethren, complete with an intelligent and understated orchestration. Read more

Editorial Review

Pre-Lilith Fair, McLachlan had critical acclaim and a cult following but was otherwise just another hard-working female singer/songwriter--one who wasn't blasting down doors with overt sexuality or popping along in front of a male Svengali. Similar in their emotional urgency to her more recent work but delightfully less polished, these folk-rock songs are surprising gems. If not for McLachlan's poignant vocals, lyrics like "Your love is better than ice cream" (on "Ice Cream") would sound childishly absurd (especially alongside deeper material like "Hold On"), but here they're given just as much respect as the weightier issues she explores. A great album to accompany your moments of introspection. Read more

Editorial Review

Billy Idol's secret is one that he shares with, of all people, Trent Reznor--the ability to take a pop base and disguise it with layers of other genres, most notably hard rock. His adaptability is on display throughout this 16-song career retrospective. It's amazing just how well the former Generation X frontman's songs have aged. Songs such as the disco-punk hit "Dancing with Myself," "White Wedding," and "Cradle of Love" are as appealing as ever, as is even "Shock to the System," just about the only listenable thing from 1993's Read more
