    Editorial Review

On this release, Banana Wind, Buffett continues in the light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek celebration of the beach-bum lifestyle that has made him a hero to tens of thousands of his "Parrothead" fans. Combining country-rock and calypso into his signature sound, the singer-songwriter advises all of us caught up in the rat race that we need to "take a holiday, grab a pack, and hit the trail, take a sail, and wind up in some moonlit bay." Early in his career Buffett was able to re-create the tension of everyday life before he released it with considerable gusto in a sun-filled fantasy. These days, however, he seems so out of touch with ordinary lives that he can't build much tension at all, and as a result his songs are so laid-back that they never quite get off the mat. --Geoffrey Himes ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buffett's best cd of the 90's!
Have you ever noticed that each and every Parrothead has their own ideas of which is the best Jimmy Buffett CD? I see a lot of people give this cd bad reviews and I totaly disagree. I love this album, it is my favorite cd to listen to when I just want to relax. I really like the songs -Only Time Will Tell-, -Jamaica Mistaica- and -Overkill-. They have that "island-type sound" that has made Jimmy what he is. I don't see how any Parrothead can actually say that this, or any of his other CDs are bad. I have been a huge fan of Jimmy since the early 90's (not too long, huh?) but, I have grown to love each and everyone of his albums for what they are. They each present a different story somehow. I guess I am just amazed to see the real old Parrotheads who have been with Buffett as far back as the 70's, turn around and say that some of his CDs are not good. Well, all I can say is this cd is amazing, just as good or better than all of the rest of his CDs. Buy it, you shouldn't be dissapointed. And, don't miss his concerts! He is totaly amazing live...

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite buffett disc
The first time I listened to this disc after buying it 3 years ago, I hated it. But as I listened more, it grew on me and I now consider it to be my favorite of all Jimmy's works. I love the island sound and Jimmy pulls offa nice switch in tempo from the slower, country sound that he reverts back to on his newer CD, Beach House on the Moon.

It's impossible to put any one CD by Jimmy in place among the 20 - something years of music he has made, and every fan has their own particular favorites that don't jibe with other people's, but for me, "Only Time Will Tell" ranks up there with "Cowboy in the Jungle" and "One Particular Harbor" as the best individual songs Jimmy has made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD!

Eminem:love him or hate him? It's no surprise that Slim Shady evokes suchconflicted feelings--he's easy to champion and disparage alike, andthis new D12 album doesn't make the decision any easier. Thoughhip-hop's pale wonder is now joined by his five, conspicuously blackDetroit peers, this still sounds and feels like a Marshall Mathersproject. The biting disses of MTV pop figures ("Ain't Nuttin' ButMusic")--still there. The dark journeys into faux psychosis ("AmericanPsycho," "Devils Night")--still there. The big middle finger atconservatives, conformists, and critics ("That's How," "Purple Pills,""S*** Can Happen")--still there. And throw in Dr. Dre'sproduction alongside Denaun Porter's lumbering funk tracks and Em's ownbeats, and this is basically the third Eminem album. Besides, he'sstill the most interesting of the six D12 members to listen to--slickerlyrics, better flow, and just a more engaging personality. Which, ofcourse, is telling the listener to go to hell. Bottom line: If youliked the last two Eminem albums, this one won't disappoint. And if youhated the last two, at least you have the other D12 members to distractyour attention. --Oliver Wang ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great cd, definately em...
By the first song on this cd you can definately tell its eminem. After listening to the whole cd, I can honestly say I was glad i bought it. With all of the [bad] music these days i've been finding after listening to a cd the first time that it was a waste of money, and that was not the case with this which was very refreshing. I have to say it sounds very similar to "The Marshall Mathers LP" which is why it didn't get 5 stars. Em flows great on this album as well as the rest of the members of d12, but none but em peticularly shine. that standout tracks are: Pistol Pistol, Nasty Mind, Aint Nothin But Music, Devil's Night, and Girls. Girls is the hidden track on the disc but it is really my favorite song. It's Eminem at his best with new people to diss (DJ Lethal and Fred Durst) but i do understand why he's [mad] at them. The other tracks are good, except "Fight Music" really scares me, but it's like Amityville which i didnt like at first but totally grew on me. All in all, "Devil's Night" sounds like em's other cds, but it is still worth buying.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Song-By-Song Review--Who is D12's Best MC?
Okay, I've listened to this album a thousand times--basically in anticipation of Eminem's next record. While not as strong, original, funny, or over-the-top as Em's solo records, his six-man group's debut is solid. Under Em's production (and Dre's supervision, of course), the music and beats are great, and more often than not the lyrics are creative and shocking. However, each song has an outstanding verse...here's a rating.

    1. "Another Public Service Announcement"--Skit. A not-funny one at that. Em, these are getting old.

    2. "Sh-t Can Happen"--A great introduction to the group. Much better than the single "Sh-t On You", which is just plain awful. Anyway, Kon Artis starts out with a solid, strong verse. Kuniva and Swifty follow with nothing too surprising, but decent verses. Eminem closes the set with a brash, innovative verse. Solid, hard delivery and great flow, showing everyone that the master is back. Winner: Eminem, naturally.

    3. "Pistol Pistol"--One of the record's high points. A celebration of handguns, of course. Em only does the hook, so he's out. Swifty, Proof, and Kuniva offer solid rhymes, but Kon Artis is the obvious stand-out with his harsh delivery. Bizarre closes the set with a lame verse, although it's a tad bit humorous at most. Winner: Kon Artis

    4. "Bizarre"--Skit, introducing us to the undeniably gross Bizarre. He's 99% gross-out shock value and only 1% MC. Overall, he's the least-talented member of the group.

    5. "Nasty Mind"--Another Bizarre gross-out song. Also verses by Swifty, Kuniva, and Kon Artis. Eminem is absent. Winner: This song is so bad that no one wins, unless you are really into potty humor, then it's a tie.

    6. "Ain't Nuttin' But Music"--This song is essentially "The Real Slim Shady, pt2". A no-holds-barred attack on the current entertainment industry. All six appear on this song. Em takes the opener with a hilarious verse that nearly made me wreck the car the first time I heard it. Bizarre is actually funny, and the rest offer great disses. Winner: Eminem, the master of the dis.

    7. "American Psycho"--Another one of the record's crowning achievements. Em, Bizarre, and Kon Artis try to out-psychopath each other, each one effectively shocking the listener. Em is the funniest (he even raps in tongues), Bizarre is the grossest (naturally, although this time, he does it creatively--it actually works!), and Kon Artis is the scariest: "Press, stress, and Ritalin caused the cop's feelin's to be hurt after they seen what I did to those children...!" Winner: A 3-way tie!!

    8. "That's How..."--A skit that leads up to the next song. Funny, for once.

    9. "That's How..."--One of the funniest songs on the record. No one verses; rather, each (sans Eminem) take a catchy "one liner" describing how a certain person, group, or ethnicity "gets f-cked up", to quote the hook. Winner: No one actually verses, although the song is hilarious.

    10. "Purple Pills"--the single, a drug celebration. Funny with an addictive beat (and mad bass!). Em starts things out with his standard mom-dis, carrying it through a drug-induced laugh fest. The others each take a verse, with Kon Artis and Kuniva doing the back-and-forth thing. Bizarre finishes things off with his standard potty humor. Descent track, with a sweet harmonica outro. Winner: Kuniva and Kon Artis' duet.

    11. "Fight Music"--An excellent angry track. Each member takes his turn violently destroying anyone who gets in his way. Each verse is great, even the one by the notoriously pitiful Bizarre. Kon Artis has the strongest delivery and most chaotic form of lyrical violence ("Kuniving Kon/Artis with a bomb/Strapped to my stomach/screaming 'Let's get it on!'" >BOOM!<). Em closes the set with a brilliant attack on his critics. Winner: Kon Artis for his delivery, although you cannot overlook Em's verbal assault.

    12. "Instigator"--Decent song, although Eminem is abscent. Another violence celebration, this one with some hot turntable scratches. Nothing that spectacular. Winner: Swifty, since it's essentially his song.

    13. "Pimp Like Me"--Severe womanizing. An OK track, although Em offers nothing more than some funny sideline comments. Winner: Bizarre, I guess, since he is the best at degrading women.

    14. "Blow My Buzz"--Another narcotic orgy. Overall, this song is dumb. Winner: All members must deduct two points for contributing to this song.

    15. "Obie Trice"--Skit introducing us to Em's latest addition to his label. The guy has a decent flow, but it didn't change my life. I think I'll skip his debut album.

    16. "Devil's Night"--Each member (minus Proof) takes a turn at shocking the listener. Em's is the strongest I think, but Bizarre's actually works. The song is OK. Winner: Eminem and Bizarre tie this time.

    17. "Steve Berman"--Another skit milked to the point of it being totally unfunny.

    18. "Revelation"--With it's tribute to Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall, pt2", this song venture's into each member's teenage years. Abusive dysfunctional families dominate the themes. One of the best songs on the album, nearly a six-way tie. However, Proof's suicidal closing verse takes it home with his brash delivery. One of the few serious songs on the album. Winner: Proof

    19. "Girls"--A hidden track, an Em solo. A brilliant and well-deserved dis on Limp Bizkit, setting the record straight. Makes Fred Durst look like a little girl in a Sunday dress. Great song.

So there you have it. A decent album, with a few weak points. All of Eminem's verses are great, with Kon Artis taking home the trophy for the most talented MC of the group (next to Eminem, of course). Bizarre could be easily thrown out...Hopefully, Kon Artis will release a solo joint soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only a Lad is great
In the year 2002, I downloaded a song called "Weird Science," to put on a mix CD. I had heard the song many times and I loved it, but I had never heard of the group Oingo Boingo. (The singers of the song.) So I went online to find more of their music. The first song I heard was "Little Girls." The song was genius, and as I soon discovered all their songs were a genius. So the first CD I bought by them was Only a Lad. I cannot tell you how many weeks this CD sat in my Cd Player. I lisened to it Day and Night. Danny Elfman is a genius at writing music. One of his best Oingo Boingo Cd's is Only a Lad. Great songs like "What you see," and "On the outside." I highly recommend this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it. Give it a spin!
I reccomend this album. Danny Elfman rocks with his new Oingo Boingo rock band in the 80's who would soon become one of the best pop bands in the 80's with Danny Elfman and Steve Bartek playing guitar, Vatos on drums, and Oingo Boingo's incredible horn section.
This is a fan favorite. Boingo's first album is mainly Devo and XTC-influenced punk with wild songs about dispicable people and outsiders. Funny, satirical. This album rocks hard. Later Boingo would introduce different sounds into their songs.
Lyrics definately Danny's. Boingo's sound is still undeveloped really in this release but still recognisably Boingo (hear "You Really Got Me" who else but Danny and the band could do just that to a song?)
    Fun Fun Fun.

    Editorial Review

After he gained legendary status rapping on Doug E. Fresh's "La Di Da Di," it was only a matter of time before the world would clutch British-born Ricky Walters to its heart. Rick had already fancied himself a rabid storyteller (and a mighty good one) on Fresh's track "The Show," and Great Adventures became Slick Rick's novella. Not content with one perspective, Slick Rick often employed tag-team rhyming with himself as his own partner ("Mona Lisa," "Teacher Teacher"). His cautionary tales ("Hey Young World," "Children's Story," "Teenage Love") work much better than his freaky tales ("Treat Her Like a Prostitute," "Indian Girl"). Still, it doesn't take a musicologist to appreciate the complex rhyme schemes and scenarios of "The Moment I Feared," "Children's Story," and "Mona Lisa," and his slight accent heightened his distinctiveness. Despite lukewarm response to his follow-up--as well as a stint in the pokey--Slick Rick will always be remembered for his Great Adventures, an essential B-boy document. --Todd Inoue ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST "STORYTELLING" RAP ALBUM
Ooh-wee! This record is THAT good. This is one of those classics that is described as "timeless". Probably no one was, is, and will be a better griot than the infectious and intriguing Slick Rick. Check out socially-conscious songs like the reggae-flavored, child-advice-driven "Hey Young World" and "Children's Story", the latter in which he tells the tragic cop-chasing story of a teenage criminal, with that trademark humor, although he reminds us of the seriousness of the matter: "...don't you dare laugh". Then there are the songs in which he just gets dirty and humorous. In "Treat Her Like A Prostitute", Slick Rick gives three examples to support his theory on heterosexual relationships: Be cautious of your mate. Then there's "Indian Story", a cativating, highly hilarious tale of a fictional, sexual relationship between Davy Crockett and a Native American damsel, although Slick stops it from being perfect at the end by bad stereotyping. And in "Kit (What's The Scoop?)", Slick is caught up in a conspiracy to cause his fall from the hip-hop throne, although he ends up victorious "'cause [he's] the king of this"...In fact there is no single weak cut in this LP; the weakest one is probably "Teenage Love" in which the Ruler makes a little-bit-above-average effort to talk about love. Sure, he ain't no LL, but this record is hot as hell; one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. Buy it, pop it in, and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Album You Will Play Again & Again
Slick Rick is one of my favorite hip-hop artists and without a doubt this album is an example of the genre's finest old school sound. He is so original that you can recognize instantly his style from the rest and why he is The Ruler and one of the best. Also, understand why newer artists cover him, and mix in some of his cool lyrics, cause even they know, it doesn't get much better than this. Treat Her Like A Prostitute, and the well-known Children's Story are classics I never get tired of hearing, but the absolute treasure on this album is Hey, Young World. This song exceeds all standards and sends nothing but love, and Rick's message is one needing to be played often and to as many people as will listen. If I were to ever attempt to cover a hip-hop song, Hey, Young World would be it. Here is my tip or call it a helpful hint: Buy this CD now and when you receive it, bust it open, pop it in, and skip the player til you get to track number 10. Listen to it twice and then play the entire disc from beginning to end. And you heard it straight from the girl known as The One Woman Riot, real-deal Holyfield, and that means alot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Classic
One of, if not the best, hiphop albums EVER. If you call yourself a rap fan and dont have this, then your opinion is garbage, because every TRUE rap fan/hiphop head HAS THIS. NO EXCEPTIONS. IF YOU DONT HAVE IT, YOU ARE A POP FAN (Feminem, She-12, 50cent, ja rule, jay-z, lil jon, ETC). To put it in a more simple way for those hipPOP $h!t d%cks, without The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, you ARE NOT A RAP FAN. YOUR A PRETENDER. And if you go out and get it now, you still aint a rap fan, coz its taken you 16 years to get it.

Anyway, this album goes down as probably the best, if not it is one of. His storytelling is hilarious, every song has awesome lyrics, and the beats are TOP-NOTCH. Just listen to this album and you will see how every rapper these days bite slick rick. Even rappers from the mid-90's stole some of his lines. For example, Biggie Smalls "Hypnotize", the chorus is straight up taken from Slick Rick's classic La-di Da-di w/ Doug E. Fresh. Anyway this is absolutely essential to own, best songs would have to be all the songs. They are all GUARANTEED CLASSICS. But my favorite would be Indian Girl - The storytelling is incredible and the lyrics are HILARIOUS. My other favorites are Children's Story, another song with fantastic storytelling, and Let's Get Crazy - another incredible song, the beat is off the hook.

Forget all these other rappers, eminem, jay-z, ja rule, d12, lil jon, all these MTV and radio d!ckr!ders. Look at TRUE hiphop, not this modern bull$h!t POP garbage. You will be blown away by The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kings (And Queen) Of Modern Rock
One of my all-time favorite albums is the 1995 debut disc by Garbage, who, in my opinion, are the world's greatest modern rock band. The group came together when guitarists' Duke Erikson & Steve Marker wanted to form a band with their friend, drummer/producer Butch Vig (who produced Nirvana's classic, "Nevermind"). But they still needed a singer. One evening the guys are watching MTV, and they see a music video by a band named Angelfish, fronted by a Scottish lass named Shirley Manson. Impressed with Shirley, the Garbage men immediately contact her, and the rest, as they say, is history. Their 1995 self-titled debut album is a fabulous whirlpool blend of bone-crunching rock and shimmering pop, with classy euro-trash production, samples and effects, capped off by Shirley's seductive voice. It arguably remains their best album to date (though I certainly love "Version 2.0" and "beautifulgarbage" just fine). There's not a dull track anywhere on "Garbage." Whether tearing up the joint on rockers like "Supervixen," "As Heaven Is Wide," "Vow," and "My Lover's Box," pumping up the pop on "Only Happy When It Rains," "Fix Me Now," and the big hit "Stupid Girl," or soaring through the atmosphere on songs like "Queer," "A Stroke Of Luck" and "Milk," Shirley & the boys are a superb musical force to be reckoned with. They are original, intelligent, crafty, and just plain genius. To my ears, there's no other modern rock band these days that comes close to them. I sure hope that there will be more music to come from Garbage in the near future, 'cause they're that good. "Garbage" is a stunning album by the kings (and queen) of modern rock. Long may they reign!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid debut from one of the best bands around
Garbage's eponymous debut is a must-have for all fans, current or prospective. I picked up "Garbage" along with "Version 2.0" purely on a whim, and soon became one of those obsessive fans you tend to hear about but rarely meet. While "Garbage" isn't their best album, in my opinion (that would be "Version 2.0" - if you don't have it, buy it NOW), "Garbage" is still an excellent buy.

Garbage created a truly unique fusion of electronica, grunge, and alt-rock with this album, and the sonic alchemy within warrants at least a casual listen. But there isn't just mindless musical experimentation going on here - the songs are fantastic, with few missteps. The two best tracks, "Stupid Girl" and "Queer" (both hit singles), showcase Garbage's skill with making rounded-out, kick-butt songs and leaving the listener wanting more. But the rest of the album is no worse: "Only Happy When It Rains" is a lean and mean rock ride, "As Heaven Is Wide" has a unique, quietly menacing electronic edge, and "My Lover's Box" starts of slow and then grows to an incredible crescendo - in the space of two seconds, the volume of the song shoots into the upper stratosphere. (Try it with a huge subwoofer - it's fun.) The entire album is filled with ingenious hooks, throbbing beats, and suprisingly mellow breaks in between. While not every track is a winner - "Not My Idea" and "Dog New Tricks" stand out as being relatively weak - the package as a whole is coherent and enjoyable. If you're an alt-rock fan, "Garbage" is a must; if you're a fan of music in general, "Garbage" is more than worth the price of admission.

4-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh, accessible air
The fall of grunge was a difficult period for popular music to face. No sweat for Garbage, who confronted the industry head-on with this, their alt-pop/rock debut, in 1995. We hadn't heard much of this genre after the Golden Age of Grunge struck, and when this genre struck back, it was a hell of a ride. While not altogether separated from grunge stylings, Garbage was infinitely more universal and definitely more accessible than most of the grunge acts of their time.

The album opens with the punky, spiteful "Supervixen" -- a grand first impression of catty frontwoman Shirley Manson, who was all fluoresecent red hair and skin-tight leather. The song's herky-jerky, stop-go style is immediately engaging, and the ripping guitar riffs recall peak-era 80s new wave. Manson shows a more introspective lyrical and vocal style on the second track, "Queer," and even concots an immortal anthem while begging for antidepressants on "Only Happy When It Rains." She emulates pre-"Eat to the Beat" Debbie Harry on the metallic "Not My Idea" and mimics the wailing pensiveness of the Cranberries Dolores O'Riordan [now Burton] on "Fix Me Now" while still sounding like herself: a gothic, artsy chick. She even performs a self-exorcism in the rueful, brilliant "Stupid Girl."

Garbage truly covers all the bases here, and their to-and-fro musical style doesn't sound dated, even today, 9 years later. They still carry the same spark and playful attitude they did years ago, and cross the line of rock to pop so often and so smoothly (and so much better than the crossover bands of today) that it's almost dizzying. Always familiar, always sarcastic, and always effective, Garbage will prove to be one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for effort, creativity, and plain great music!
The Beacon Street Collection was made after No-Doubt's self-titled album and before their breakthrough "Tragic Kingdom." You can see the transition between the two albums in this CD. The first track, "Open The Gate," is a good opener, but the song doesn't isn't anything special to me(7.5/10). "Blue In the Face" is a very unusual song. You need to appreciate the unique beauty though (9/10). Total Hate '95 has some awesome parts, and some parts you need to listen over and over to get. But Bradley from Sublime contributes, and that can never go wrong. You've got to admit, it is catchy too (9/10). Stricken is the climax. With a little bit of ska, jazz, Gwen Stefani's vocals, a slow sweet melody, and some love this song comes out just right. Gwen's vocals are at best here. My favorite on the CD (10/10). Greener Pastures is a great song anyone can relate too. It hasn't really got to me yet though (7/10). By the Way is another favorite of mine about a faraway love (I think)(9.5/10). Snakes is an okay song, but not one of the highlights (6/10). That's Just Me is a very unique song which literally goes all over the place musically. The only song I initially skipped while listening to the CD, but if you're patient, the song will not disappoint (8/10). Squeal is a plain awesome song which is also one of my favorites on the album (9/10). Doghouse was not initially one of my favorites. If you can appreciate the wonderful lyrics though, you will love it (7/10). Overall, this album deserves five stars for wonderful craftsmanship, tremendous effort, and "Stricken."

5-0 out of 5 stars No Doubt this is 1 Item Every No Doubt Fan & Everyone Needs!
This is a great cd. It's got the kind of music that would make ya sing along and get up and dance! It's a great cd, safe for all ages (nothing with a need for advisenment). It's a great gift idea and perfect for any No Doubt fan's collection. It's got a variety of music, from slow to fast. Also note, Bradley (of Sublime) makes an apperance and voacls for the song Total Hate '95. This album also has a wonderful amount of old pictures of the band incuding the pictures of the band as young children on the cd itself. Also be sure to hunt down the origional collection and the singles for Doghouse and Squeal on 7" vinyl. Be sure to also pick up No Doubt's self titled album, Tragic Kingdom, video, and other items such as compulations and singles. Do Well & Doubt Not!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun CD to listen and dance to...
The very first No Doubt CD I bought was Rock Steady, followed by The Singles, No Doubt, Tragic Kingdom, and now this. I'm going to soon buy Return of Saturn. Now, on to the review of the songs, okay? =)

Open the Gate - 9/10 - Great guitar and keyboard intro. Listening to this song, I could imagine the group playing a driveway somewhere in Aneheim, CA, while the whole neighborhood is standing around and dancing.

Blue in the Face - 10/10 - Wonderful music. Great lyrics.

Total Hate '95 - 10/10 - Great song to dance to.

Stricken - 9/10 - It starts out in an almost 20's style big band. Then it picks up.

Greener Pastures - 10/10 - I love the way this song begins. It's a great breaking up song. Ha! Joking. =P

    By the Way - 9/10

    Snakes - 10/10 - Great metal-sounding music.

That's Just Me - 8/10 - It started to sound like supermarket muzac, but it picks up and works out.

Squeal - 10/10 - My personal favorite on the album. Great song to sing with. I would love to hear a group cover this song. That would rock!

Doghouse - 10/10 - A great way to end a great album. The music, on the keyboard, sounds like Danny Elfman composed it. But still a great song.

Now, you might be thinking, "Oh, he's a No Doubt fan, so of course he won't give any of their songs low ratings." That's not true. I would give any of these songs low ratings, but they're just too good. So, if you have a spare $12.99(or however much this CD's priced near you)+tax, then spend it on this CD. ... Read more

While not their most definitive album (that honor belongs to 1992's Dirt), Jar of Flies represents an important step in Alice in Chains' recording career. Witness "I Stay Away," which is made up of equal portions of hummable guitar riffs and the spookier, scarier, more grinding elements that most fans associate with Alice in Chains. This song most clearly delineates the dichotomy that was a highlight of the band's sound--Jerry Cantrell's listenable tunes and often gorgeous arrangements (just listen to what he does with "Whale & Wasp"!) and Layne Staley's growling vocals, which are just the teeniest bit flat. The collection as a whole, brief as it is, has an elegance that's unusual for metal. --Genevieve Williams ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Immortal... Unforgettable...
Layne's gone now....and Alice in Chains either. I don't wanna believe it until now. But how about their music?
In the mid-90's, I had been long addicted to bonecrushing sound of some thrash bands until i heard this album. At that time, the whole world was in love with grunge sound and fashion and I liked Nirvana. But I hated listen to "weak" musics and my favorite was all thrash bands yet. And one rainy afternoon of September, I was passing by a record shop. I was a little blue and wanted to buy a brandnew album. Then I picked up this album(I'd heard of their name only until then). As I got in my room, I played it on my stereo and.... heard a bass riff coming out from it. It was like ten ton "sponge" hammer beating. I've played whole album again and again all day. Bass riff on Rotten Apple is so good for intro to this whole blue album. And Jerry Cantrell's guitar licks are all killers. Nutshell is a very sad song. I love to sing this along. String orchestrations on Stay Away are no oversense but very good choice in my opinion. Whale & Wasp showcases Jerry's amazing songwriting ability well. And Don't Follow is one of my favorite songs. It is so relaxing but sad song. Harmonica on it is great. All Songs are classic. Layne's soul-taking voice and Jerry's blue tone made this album far from forgetting. This is not just an leftover EP and is surely a page of history. These unbelievable genius' had made a immortal creature. On rainy days, I can't help picking this up like that one mid-90's day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps their best!
This EP demonstrates what truly brilliant musicians can accomplish in a short amount of time. This entire record was recorded in a week, but it shows no signs of sloppiness or haphazard songwriting. This became the fastest selling EP album in history when it was released. It's a shame they couldn't have just written a few more songs.

The entire album is acoustic with electric guitar solos and electric basslines. The songs are similar to those on the SAP EP. "Nutshell" is very moving, even the band holds back tears when performing it. There's also the hit "I Stay Away" along with the other one "No Excuses." Some songs here may repel those who know only "Man in the Box" or "Would?" It may take a few listens to get it (try listening to it through headphones with the lights out). "Don't Follow" starts kind of country, but bursts into a more familiar Alice in Chains sound. "Whale and Wasp" is an instrumental, "Swing on This" is probably the strangest song here, but can be pretty catchy. "Rotten Apple" features a great baseline and solo at the end.

Buy this if you liked SAP, AIC Unplugged, and songs like "Down in a Hole," "Rooster," and "Heaven Beside You." Don't buy if you're expecting a harder album like Facelift (although I'll bet you'll like it anyway).

5-0 out of 5 stars A shame to see them go
Alice in chains was one amazing band. personally, i think they had the potential to be another legendary band like a zeppelin. they just had so many different sounds that it will amaze you! i think every rock fan should have all their albums. jar of flies is awesome too! ... Read more

Jailbreak is surely Thin Lizzy's most exciting, tough, and touching album. Simultaneously barbarous and balletic, the 1976 set boasts the totally irresistible "The Boys Are Back in Town." But the rest of Jailbreak lives up to that highlight, especially the riotous title track ("Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak, somewhere in this town"--yeah well, the jail seems a likely place). If Phil Lynott's poetic pretensions sometimes get the better of things, most of the album shows off his effortless power and economy; if heavy rock has a tendency to wrestle each song to the ground, Lynott and company were uniquely capable of delivering the knockout punch, graceful as a boxer or bullfighter. Jailbreak is testament to such skills. --Taylor Parkes ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WARRIORS
It took far too long for Thin Lizzy to step up to the plate with a major performance like this. They had flirted with good albums for years, but everything finally came together. As far as the review saying this was typical 80's metal, then this must be great, because it was the mid 70's. Just goes to show they were a band well ahead of their time!

The great lyrics, driving bass, Lynott's crooning, the double edged guitar attack that would become a trademark, and the pounding rhythms of Brian Downey's drums create a masterpiece! I can't even begin to tell you there are any songs you'd have to wade through to get to something good. These are all Lizzy killers! My favorites are "Warriors" and "Emerald", where the group shows they can play swords and sorcery with the best of them. The variety of most Lizzy albums is present even here with the slower "Romeo and the Lonely Girl" and "Running Back". Strong rockers are the three everyone knows, "Jailbreak", "the Cowboy Song", and "the Boys Are Back In Town".

Maybe it's just reliving great times from high school or one of the hottest tours I've seen with Robin Trower, but JAILBREAK is one of those lifetime achievements few bands, no matter how good, ever accomplish. Definitely a 100 all-time best CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Rock !
This was one of the first albums I ever bought, yes, in the '70's, in vinyl. It is utterly fantastic! From the opening guitar Riffs of Jailbreak to the closing notes of Emerald this album rocks like no other.

With hard driving guitars, pulsating basslines you will find it hard to keep still...And Phil Lynott's, voice, Heavenly!

This album contains some already classic tracks, required listening for anyone who loves rock n roll:

Jailbreak, The Boys are Back in Town, The Cowboy Song, Running Back

These were rock radio staples where I grew up in Arizona. They still rock! If you are tired of grunge, try Thin Lizzy. You will not be disappointed. I promise!

    Great band, great album!

5-0 out of 5 stars The breakout album from the band
This album was the first time I had heard of the band "Thin Lizzy", (I was 13 at the time. It was our nation's bicentennial!). It was also the album that made me want to learn guitar as a kid, and I knew exactly how I wanted to sound. LIKE THESE GUYS!!!!
To me the look and sound of Thin Lizzy was the coolest. I never felt cheated with any of their STUDIO albums (even "Renegade" had some great moments on it), and I admire their courage to record songs that made Thin Lizzy a truly "singular" band.

But not everyone was so taken with this band. Critically they were often slammed. Read what Robert Christgau wrote about Thin Lizzy, and the album "Jailbreak"....... (from Robert Christgau, Christgau's Record Guide, 1981)....

    >>>The proof of how desperate people are for new Springsteen is that they'll settle for this -- even "The Boys Are Back in Town" is the sort of thing that ends up in Bruce's wastebasket. If Irish teen traumas are as boring as Phil Lynott's descriptions of them, it's no wonder they have trouble maintaining their birthrate. And if Irish teen traumas are as secondhand as Scott Gorham's guitar lines, the Irish will probably end up preferring Springsteen too. B- <<<<<

I'm glad Thin Lizzy sound didn't compare to the bombast of "everyman" and critical darling, Bruce Springsteen. And I'm glad that the band kept doing what IT wanted to musically, critics be damned. Thin Lizzy's guitar work when Scott and Brian played together was brilliant, the song styles and subject matter varied, the song writing was at times subpar (being honest here), but usually excellent. They were never boring. There sound was exciting, and at times different and very challenging, unlike Springsteen (why people tried to compare the two is beyond me).

When Thin Lizzy released these 4 studio albums consecutively....Jailbreak (1976) Johnny the Fox (1976) Bad Reputation (1977) Black Rose (1979)....it was rock nirvana for me. I can't think of another band that influenced me in my youth the way these guys did, and I thank them for it. I would have given anything to play guitar like Scott and Brian, and be as cool as Phil. ... Read more

"Fell on Black Days," indeed. Seattle sludge slingers Soundgarden made a living out of cathartic, woe-is-me wailing (we're talking the banshee vocals of Chris Cornell and the crypt-creaking guitar of Kim Thayil), but this wallowing in grim depression ironically proved to be the band's most uplifting career effort. When the reclusive Cornell ventures out of his shy-guy shell, it's typically via a primal scream of cathartic emotion--he might camp it up with a sophomoric "Spoon Man," but most of this vicious disc leaps straight for your jugular. Generations in the post-millennial future will one day refer to this record to discover exactly how 1990s rock & roll was done. --Tom Lanham ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quintessential Grunge.......
"Superunknown" is Soundgarden's full-blown masterpiece. Picking highlights is difficult, because every single track is a gem in its own right, giving this album a consistency that is seldom found on any album of any genre. My personal favourite is the sludge-grunge of "Mailman", which showcases Chris Cornell's unique vocals at their very best. But there are plenty more stunners here, from the self-deprecation of "Fell on Black Days", the eerie psychedelia of "Black Hole Sun", to the apocalyptic "4th of July". Every other song has its merits too, to the point where the album is almost flawless.

Kim Thayil's riffs are brilliant on Superunknown and background the passionate, anguished wails of Cornell to great effect. The vocals and instrumentation here are impeccable, as are the cryptic lyrics, which deal with depression, misanthropy, nihilism and darkness in it's myriad forms, with an intellectual sensibility that is rarely found on modern rock records.

The album closes with the haunting ballad "Like Suicide", which fits nicely with the dark theme maintained throughout the album. This album is one of my personal all-time favourites, and is certainly recommended to fans of the Seattle grunge sound.

Note : some versions of Superunknown come with the bonus track "She Likes Surprises", which is worth seeking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
I've listened to lots of music, and "Superunknown" doubtlessly stands as arguably the best album I have ever heard. Visionary, perfectly executed and technically impeccable, Soundgarden set the standard for dark hard rock with this one. I can't really think of a place to start in praising this album, but Chris Cornell's vocals are as good a place as any. From the hushed tones of "Fell on Black Days" to the cathartic wailing of tunes like "My Wave" and the propulsive singing of "Fourth of July," Cornell can simply do it all. His dark, churning, guitar riffs, aided by Kim Thayil's soaring, distorted solos, complete the powerful atmosphere of these songs. Add in Matt Cameron's nimble and inventive drumwork and the result is a musical masterpiece. The variety of this album is also noteworthy, as it mixes hard rockers like the opening double shot of "Let Me Drown" and "My Wave" with slower, more melodic numbers like the hits "Fell on Black Days" and "The Day I Tried To Live." The megahit "Black Hole Sun," while a strong song, is easily the worst track on the album, with the exception of the filler track "Half." "Superunknown" boasts all that serious music fans could possibly want, from creativity to technical precision to complex arrangements to a truly masterful and powerful overall vocal performance from Chris Cornell. A masterpiece in every sense of the word.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Best Grunge Album and Band in the 90's
I dont know how to explain on how this album was one of the best albums in the 90's fellowed by Badmotorfinger. It's obvious that Superunknown was consciously styled as a masterwork, and it fulfills every ambition. ... Read more

With valuable assistance from producer Rick Rubin, the Peppers find just the right blend of punk, funk, and hip-hop. Even with a running time of 74 minutes, this 1991 breakthrough has continuity and cohesion both within and across the 17 cuts. Riding Flea's surging bass, Anthony Kiedis delivers his explicit lyrics with a rapper's flair, extolling the virtues (and outlining the dangers) of sex and drugs. Plaintive ballads such as "Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied," and the hit "Under the Bridge" give the album depth and provide contrast to the raw energy of "Mellowship Slinky in B Major," "Funky Monks," and "Give It Away." Rubin masterfully fuses John Frusciante's raunchy guitar with the irresistible grooves. --Marc Greilsamer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE
This is the best Red Hot Chili Peppers album todate. This is a
classic. It's as good as Deep Purple's Machine Head, The Beatles'
Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side
of the moon, and Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral.

John Frusciante is a #2 guitarist of all time. #1 is Jimi Hendrix. John Frusciante is a very funky guitarist. On songs' chorus he doesn't play chords. He's improvisating, like nobody
improvisates on songs, and that's unique. Here are a lot cool
guitar solos. I don't understand, why he doesn't play guitar solos on the latest album (By The Way).

Flea is one of the best bass players of all time. I don't any bass players, who play bass like that. He's just amazing. And
    funky. But himself, he's dumb.

Anthony Kiedis' voice is a little different than it is in the first four albums. He sounds here even better.

Chad Smith is a good drummer. But not the best of all.

I recommend to buy this album.

The power of equality 3 stars. Typical funk song.

If You have to ask 5 stars. A very guitar solo. And a cool chorus.

Breaking the girl 4 stars. Excellent ballad.

Funky Monks 5 stars. Also a cool guitar solo. And a cool end of the song. And the song is cool too.

Suck my kiss 5 stars. A little harder.

I could have lied 5 stars. A cool ballad. And a cool guitar solo.

Mellow Ship Slinky in B Major 4 stars. A good funky song.

The righteous & the wicked 4 stars. A good rock song.

Give it Away 5 stars. One of the best Red Hot Chili Peppers songs.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is 3/5 stars. A good song.

Under the Bridge is 5/5 stars. A cool ballad, and a cool intro. I
can play this song with my guitar. And it's one of the best Red
    Hot Chili Peppers songs.

Naked in the rain is 4/5 stars. It includes a good bass solo.

Apache Rose Peacock is 5/5 stars. A classical song.

The Greeting Song is 3/5 stars. Not Bad.

My lovely Man is 5/5 stars. A good rock song. And a cool guitar

    solo.

Sir Psycho Sexy is 5/5 stars. A cool song. And a long too.

They're Red Hot is 3/5 stars. A Robert Johnson cover. Peter Green plays this one too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ryan V.'s review on the best album ever recorded
This album is a true masterpiece, and a classic everyone one should own. In Blood Sugar Sex Magik Flea's funky bass lines will blow you away, John has the most amazing, beautiful solos throughout, Anthony's unique style is the heart of their sound, and Chad drum's are seemingly awsome. "Funky Monks" and "Suck My Kiss" traces the band back to their routes and love for funk and punk music. Other great songs on here are "If You Have To Ask" "I Could Have Lied" "Mellowship Slinky In B Major" "The Righteous and The Wicked" "Apache Rose Peacock" "The Greeting Song" "My Lovley Man" and wow, "Sir Psycho Sexy". All of these songs are unbelievably awsome, and so innovative you could never get tired of hearing them. Unlike most bands today such as Linkin Park you get quality music and can enjoy actuall talent, instead of just a bunch of distortion and screaming. If you have only heard RHCP's new stuff then this type of sound may be a suprise, but their music always is. Let me say that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the most influential, barrier breaking, greatest bands of all time. This may be hard to believe but this band started in 1983, and on their second album in 1985 broke down the wall between rock and rap way before Aerosmith and Run DMC did in their video together. The Chili Peppers broke this barrier down, and they should be given some credit for it. Go get Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and you will become just as obsessed and aww over such an amazing record that never gets old.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Epitomy of the Red Hot Chili Pepper's Career
This is definately one of the best records of all time. Flea's one of the most innovative and funky bassists of the last 10 years, and John Frusciante's solos are sure to blow your mind. Flea and CHad Smith make up what is possibly the best rythym section ever. And Anthony Kiedis's lyrics are random yet beautiful and humorous. But despite all the bands individual talent (which is elite), what shines here is the band's incredible chemistry. The whole album is recorded live, with hardly any dubs. They blend together so amazingly into 17 rocking songs. THere's raw funky songs like Apache Rose Peacock, Sir Psycho Sexy, If you Have to Ask, Mellowship Slinky in B Major and The RIghteous and the Wicked. All driven by infectious funky grooves, supplied by FLea's bass. To hard agressive rocking songs like Power of Equality, The Greeting Song, and Funky Monks. Many people think of Under the Bridge when they hear Blood Sugar Sex Magik, but I Could Have Lied may well be one of the saddest songs you'll hear. Driven by intense passion and somewhat dark lyrics, the guitar is just beautiful. So if you haven't a clue what Red Hot Chili Pepper's albums to get, screw By the Way or Californication, go for the classic Blood Sugar Sex Magik. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars weird at times, but AWESOME!
a lot of my friends think i'm weird for liking this cd, but there are really some great songs on this...

1.Waiting for Bud. While i never can be sure if its waiting for bud the drummer, or waiting for BUD, this is a great instrumental that is a good start.

2.Steady B loop dub. crazy. a big switch from the first song, but its pretty cool, the only line of lyrics in the song can also be heard on garden grove on self titled...

    3. Raleigh part I. raieigh is a pretty crazy guy, im not sure who he is, but i've heard him on other bands cds too.

4.Pool shark original. I like this song, even though its really short. its pretty sad though, as it is about brads drug problems

5.Steppin razor. this is kinda a weird song, but i usually don't skip it because its cool to see the diversity in this cd

6.Greatest hits. awesome song, one of my favorites from any band. sweet bass lines. if you're too cheap to buy the cd, download this song

7.Free loop dub.crazy, weird, dub, cool bass line. yeah.

8.Q-ball. short, quiet, cool basslines if they were louder for more of the song. rap, but not brad rapping.

9.Saw Red. i like this song, its really ska ish and fast. gwen stephani is cool too.

10.work that we do. this was probably one of the songs recorded on a 4 track, its pretty bad quality, but its a pretty decent song.

11.Linclon highway dub. this is an early instrumental version of santeria. its got some cool solo parts that aren't on the self titled version. no words though.

12.pool shark (acoustic). same as the original, but acoustic, and more sad

13.cisco kid. AWESOME! haha, starts out with an old tv show, then goes into this reallllyyy slow song with trumpets, and every once in a while, a really loud smacking noise!! BONUS

14.raleigh 2. if u didn't already know that raleigh was crazy, heres proof, its funny

15.STP!!! this is a sweet song. it has everything from reggae to blues. i wish i played bass so i could play this song, its got awesome bass lines. brad can sing really high as he proves in this song.

16.boss dj. sweet. reel big fish covered this song, although it was nothing compared to this version. it sounds a lot like a marley song that goes "its so nice/wanna do the same thing twice"

17.don't care too much for reggae dub. this is just people talking on the street about being "magicians" and stuff. it actually goes into a song (which i cna't understand the words) and theres some cool guitar. crazy.

18.falling idols. instrumental, crazy guitar and cool bass. thats it

19.all you need. i can't understand half the words, but the bass is really fast, and theres a cool (and easy) slow guitar solo in it.

20.freeway time in la county jail. just brad playing some blues, its cool stuff

21.mary. funny song, really easy chords (C,G,Am,F,Dm are the only ones in the song if i remember right) good message. lol

22.raleigh part 3. just some more raleigh. after a bunch of scilence, theres a version of don't push that has some crazy lyrics that you won't hear on 40 ozs.

it takes a while to warm up to this cd, unless you're hard core sublime fan, u have to listen to it a few times.

the way i did the numbering is right, even on the cd case the numbering is messed up because they call free loop dub and q-ball one song.

4-0 out of 5 stars VERY DISSAPOINTED
When I bought this CD, I was very dissapointed. On this CD there are 22 tracks.
    -12 have singing.
-4 of the songs with singing are acoustic
    -6 are instrumental
-3 have people saying some stuff with a lot of curses
-1 is some guy rapping for 43 sec.

I gave this CD 4 stars because Sublime is one of my favorite bands, and there are some great songs on here. This is what is wrong with the CD-

-There is no singing until track 4, which is Pool Shark, and it isnt a very good song. It's only 57 sec. long, and the music is so loud that you can barely hear Brad.
-The songs aren't in a good order. Some will be fast, and then it will go into a slow song.
-The art work suucks, just look at the cover of the CD.
    -Barely any singing.

The CD isnt all bad, some of the music is good, and it has songs like Greatest Hits, Steppin' Razor,Cisco Kid, Boss DJ, All You Need, Pool Shark (acoustic), STP, and Saw Red

Buy it if your a big fan, if not buy 40 oz. or SUBLIME

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling, history, laughs
This Sublime cd has always been one of my favorites, no matter what. I played this cd so much *was originally purchased in 1996, that four yrs later I had to buy it again. Totally worht it.

The Raleigh interludes between songs are strange, yet hilarious. I think that old man really was crzy.

The songs "Boss DJ" and "Mary" and the accoustic "Pool Shark" are so good, and really show Bradley's songwriting ability. "Saw Red" with Gwen Stefani is a great duet that is so fun to sing along with.

Overall, this cd really brings out the bands personality. There is a great variety of songs, some are on other cd's but not many. It is a great part of the Sublime collection.

If you are a fan, this cd is a definite must have. If you buy, you will enjoy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Motels an influence on No Doubt????
I was previously only aware of the hit song Only the Lonely from seeing the video on MTV when I was a kid. After hearing this album along with a couple of compilations I have become a fan of The Motels. From a 21st century perspective, The Motels seem to be the genesis of No Doubt's sound. Much has been said about the ska group Madness' influence on No Doubt, but I would not be surprised to hear Gwen Stefani admit being influenced by Martha Davis; I think the similarities are obvous to anyone familiar with both groups. Here's hoping VH-1 Bands Reunited will get The Motels back together.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very underrated 80's pop album.
Currently residing in the "Where Are They Now" file, The Motels were a huge MTV band in the early 80's. Remember when MTV still had taste? Anyway, it is this reviewers opinion that this oh-so-close-to-a-masterpiece recording was one of the best pop albums by a female led group of the 80's. It surpassed anything by (remember these groups?) Scandal, Quarterflash, Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benater, and (dare I say) Heart and Madonna. In fact, the only two albums I would consider better in this genre and period would be the first two Pretender albums.

There is a broad range of stylings apparent here, from driving rock (Mission of Mercy), to heartbreaking love song (Take The L), to artsy (So L.A. & Art Fails) to downright spooky (Tragic Surf). In fact, I would even rate Tragic Surf as one of the greatest storytelling songs of all time. This CD even had lounge jazz stylings in the song "I Just Might Change My Mind".

Truly a lost classic, finally remastered and re-released with a couple of additional hits. I am so glad to have this in my collection again. It still sounds fresh to me today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserted Island Album!
Top down on the convertable Corvette, driving along the Coast Highway in La Jolla, smell of the sea in the air. This album is perfect for cruisin So Cal. Its also great stuff for those who aren't cruisin So Cal. Every song captures the best non-commercial aspect of 80s music. It also is about as close to a definition of what the good California 80s club bands were all about. If you want a small club band sound with solid (not slick) production, this is it. It doesn't get any better! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Beat's Best...
This c.d. is absolutley astounding ! From the first track to the last there is not a single flop or disappointment; Even the album cover conveys a sense of coolness and sophistication. I had only heard the name English Beat growing up but never ventured to listen to their music thinking it was another heavy-synth new romantic band by it's name alone. Now, I am glad I've heard them ! Their mixture of ska, reggae, pop, and a few other styles will surely capture any avid music collector's attention. Also, the vocals of the lead singer are very reminiscent of Colin Hay's from Men At Work (another '80s great group). Although the album originally was released in 1982 I can see or hear why it firmly stands up to the test of time !

5-0 out of 5 stars Contains the best "Beat" track ever written!
No doubt, this is a great album. With beut tracks such as "I Confess", "Jeanette", and "Sole Salvation" this is a must have album. The album also contains the haunting "Save It For Later", which, in my humble opinion, is the best of all the great Beat tracks, and would make my top three (and possibly top one!) of all time.

Is this album as good as "I Just Can't Stop It"? Very hard to call, as the albums are about as similar as chalk and cheese. Still, if I was to be stuck on a dessert island, and could only take one Beat album with me, I think "I Just Can't Stop It" would win by a nose.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites
I loved this CD since college, when it was just vinyl. I'm listening to it today in my office, and it just really stands the test of time. The lyrics are so clever and the beats interesting. Really, how many times have we all "done too much of both types of w(h)ining"

Highly recommended! A great 80s classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT ALL-AMERICAN ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC
The Blasters were one of the great unsung roots rock bands. With Dave Alvin leading the way on guitar, and his brother Phil on vocals, these guys were at the forefront of the late 70's early 80's rockabilly revival. What seperated the Blasters from the rest of the pack was their ability to combine their rockabilly sound with everything from R&B and country to punk. And as members of the L.A. punk scene, they were influenced by bands like X, who Dave Alvin later joined after the Blasters broke up. They also had a little bit of a country sound at times, probably influenced a little by Dwight Yoakam, who they often shared a double bill with. Just like the title of this cd suggest, this is all American Music. Influenced a lot by people like Jerry Lee Lewis and Big Joe Turner. But by no means did they copy these artists. The Blasters had a distinct sound of their own. There is a ton of great music on this cd. The songs I particually like are their anthem "AMERICAN MUSIC" and "MARIE MARIE", a song which another outstanding rockabilly artist Shakin' Stevens made a hit out of over in England. I also like the song "BARN BURNING", a bluesy tune that Dave Alvin later did on his solo album. All the tunes here are 2 to 3 minute little gems that keep this album rolling along nicely. My only gripe about Blasters music is why haven't they released more of it. Warner Brothers needs to re-release the "Blasters Collection" cd of their greatest hits off their 4 albums. I can't believe "American Music" is all they have availiable from their catalogue. If you like the Blasters, I also suggest picking up "Blastered", a Tribute To The Blasters. This is an excellent collection of Blaster songs from 16 of the best rockabilly bands around. In the meantime, American music is a good (and only) place to start listening to what I consider one of the very best roots rock bands ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Bless America, AND THE BLASTERS!!
So someone introduced you to the music of Dave Alvin and The Guilty Men one night at a ripping good party, eh? Or maybe they played stuff by "X"? If this is the case then, you had one of two polar reactions... you either loved it beyond belief or hated it with a passion. If the former is the case, then you MUST hear where it all began!! The Blasters are Rockabilly/Hillbilly/Cajun/Blues/R&B/Rock & Roll all blendered together into what the album title describes as "American Music"! I'm sure the members of the Stray Cats and Webb Wilder all have multiple, well-worn copies of this classic everywhere they go. If you dig roots music with a blues edge played with a ripping good guitar, thumping bass, thundering drums, and surprisingly thoughtful songwriting, then this will blow you out of the water! It will also send you on a frenzy trying to get every copy known of the original Blasters live shows from the late 1970s when punk rock was all the rage. Dave Alvin and the rest of this band are true American originals that made legendary reputations out of all the roadhouses that this band tore up musically during their too short reign.

Buy it and tell a friend!!

4-0 out of 5 stars High-Energy Road Music
I saw the Blasters play in Austin back in the early 80s-great show-but I had forgotten all about them until I was recently turned on to Dave Alvin. Remembering what a great show it was and wanting to know more about Alvin's music, I picked up this little gem. This album is good old-time rock and roll with a judicious layer of rockabilly and blues. It takes me back to the days of the Mandolin Wind club in San Diego where one could always go and get a good dose of high-powered blues rock. While there is nothing here that could be termed virtuoso, every cut is enjoyable. The Blasters are bursting with high energy and that makes this CD a perfect companion for a road trip through the wide open west. Crank it up, beat on the steering wheel, and sail on down the road! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All Hail, X!
This album brings tears to my eyes...it's just that good. It was the soundtrack of my high school years and continues to be a favourite in my record collection to this day. Los Angeles is X at it's raw best- a perfect marriage of rockabilly, punk and pure poetry. The sound of John Doe and Exene singing is absolutely breathtaking...ACK! I can't recommend this enough! If you like the Cramps, Siouxie or early L.A./UK punk rock, you will love this. Also check out X's fourth album, More Fun in the New World, and on this particular release the previously unavailable gem, Cyrano de Berger's Back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poverty and Spit
I'll be honest. The only reason I bought this album is because Brett Easton Ellis talked about X all the time in "Less Than Zero." After listening to the record, I understand why. Both are about the decadence of Los Angeles and the nihilism of its youth. Both are about the corruption of money and the emptiness of sex.In short, both are about realizing how miniscule you are in this world and how insignificant you are to everybody else. Now, on that happy note, "Los Angeles" is not only a true punk classic, but it's also pretty good old-fashion rock n'roll. Fleetwood Mac would sound this way if they didn't have enough money to produce their albums. In fact, it might be good to compare Exene Cervenka and Stevie Nicks. Both claim to be poets, both are unusual, attractive, and slightly off key - in the case of Exene way off key, but both can maintain their own. I could compare John Doe and Lindsey Buckingham, but why bother? The point is that both are the sound of California but on opposite poles: Fleetwood Mac's the rich and X's the poor. This is very apparent on X's "The Unheard Music." Boy, does this song rock! It has guitar crunches, a slow melodic dark sound reminiscent of The Doors and a Beach Boy in the sun type of break that is anything but hopeful."Nausea" is the best song on the album because it encapsulates the whole feel of isolation in a big city and a life among the "poverty and spit." The title track shows a woman in flight from her own derangement, her incipient indifference. The other stand out song is "Your Phone's Off the Hook, But You're Not." It's a deliciously evil hillbilly rocker that has Exene singing atonally about her sister and some guy who doesn't "have to answer" her or "call her" back. In fact, the overall theme of this album is the evil of humanity. When in "Sex and Dying in High Society" John Does talks about a girl telling her maid to burn her on her "virgin back" with a curling iron because "pain is better than any kind of love," you get the sense that love and death in "high society" is so shallow and impotent that the impression of feeling is better than feeling nothing at all. This is an exceptional album exposing the fakery of the California Sun. It's a Fleetwood Mac album without the clichés and meretricious display of musicality. It's real, and it may be hard to swallow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decadent nihilism
I agree with Mike Harrington: it takes a few listens for "Los Angeles" to seep into your brain. This is a unique album that sounds a little underwhelming at first, considering its lionizing by punk purists. After a few listens though, this album will forever be etched in your brain.
John Doe and Exene create a most unlikely pair of singers, two barely in-tune vocalists who yelp and shout the vocals to match the surf-punk backing underneath. The music is delicious, and the half-poetry, half-punk lyrics are sheer delirium. Every one of the nine original songs are amazing (even the "Unheard Music", which apparently mars the album because of its slower pace), and make for an absolutely essential punk classic. The five extra tracks aren't anything too special, and if you already own the original album, you might only rush out for the improved sound. Either way, I am very glad I bought this album, and it will remain a treasured part of my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is rock AND roll.
Devo was everything rock couldn't allow itself to be, but they sold zillions (well, millions) of records anyway. Dorky and unaffectedly white, they didn't pretend to be groovy poor urban blacks like pretty much every other band before or since. This giant step away from the cultural imperialism (theft?) initiated by E. Presley is reason enough to explore their work, but the words, music, and delivery of Freedom of Choice make the album essential for anyone's understanding of post-punk culture.

"Whip It" is almost too iconic to be borne these days, so overplayed it's become Muzak*. On the other hand, the title track, plus brilliant hymns like "Gates of Steel," still strongly make the case for independence of thought and behavior--as important now for adults as for adolescents. The original mutant rockers deserve nothing but the highest praise now and eternally. Are we not men?

    * Footnote: Mark Mothersbaugh has released at least one album of Devo-inspired EZ-Listening music which is highly devloved and recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are They Not Cyber Musicians?
Devo brought Freedom of Choice to America in 1980 while disco was flailing its rubbery arms in every dance club across the U.S. The decidely staccato and synth sound of this album made for not only a more innovative opposition to disco, but a whole new robotic, mechanized form of popular dance. These boys were not simply wearing flower pots and garbage bags to get chics, they were driving pop music in another, more refreshing direction.

While the songs on this album sound pretty similar, it's to Devo's credit that they were able to bring humanistic topics about love (Snowball, Ton O' Luv), politics (Cold War), and social consciousness (Freedom of Choice) in an unabashedly electronic way. In this way, Devo were trailblazers making the case that music and technology can touch the human soul.

4-0 out of 5 stars GIVE THE PASS THE SLIP!
Devo would have to be the most underrated band of all
time.Their influence is so widespread that it has become
impossible to see.I think most people just did'nt get
what the music and messages meant. Not my favourite Devo

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for immature listeners!
Let me get this out of the way first...i'm kinda surprised this album doesn't have a parental advisory by now. A few choice words are used in oh-so-blantant ways. So beware of letting the younger ones hear this. It was this album (not Purple Rain) that eventually started the Parental Advisory thing anyway. Okay...i kind of admire Prince for putting out a record as ballsy as this was in 1982, and even today. Whereas there are many hit singles (1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious, the unsuccessful Let's Pretend We're Married), many of the songs are upwards of 7 minutes long, and come off as sounding like extended danceable jams. Most popular albums still consist of songs really no longer than 5 or 6 minutes, usually with plenty of instrumentation or lyrics. But not Prince...he may as well have been improvising! But that's one of the things that makes the album so strong-it's not very mainstream in its entirety but it sounds great to just about anyone. Of course, with the exception of about 3 ballads, you can dance to these songs. DMSR, with the refrain of Dance, Music, Sex, Romance is a perfect example, clocking in at around 8 minutes. Let's Pretend We're Married lays the sexuality aspect of Prince on thick, and even makes me a bit uncomfortable towards the end with some of his ramblings, and that says quite a bit! (This number is definitely not for immature ears.) If there was a low point to this album, it would have to be the title track, which has received substantial airplay at both the turn of the century and throughout the 80's and 90's. Also, the catch-phrase "party like it's 1999" is the 1982 version of today's "Whazzzup?", if you get my drift. The Top Ten hit Little Red Corvette sounds as sweet and enjoyable today after many years of both personal play and radio attention. Free is a touching ballad, whereas International Lover is a serenade that sounds as if it belonged on one of Prince's prior albums, most likely Controversy. Either way, it's still a great song. Honorable mentions are Something In The Water (does not compute), Lady Cab Driver, and especially the stark All The Critics Love U In New York. This is definitely worth the money. This ranks up among Purple Rain and Dirty Mind as one of Prince's best and most daring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jamie Starr Strikes Again
Although the majority of "The Revolution" was already in place they were not formed at this point. Wendy, Lisa, and Brownmark are all present on this album even the then unknown Vanity sings backup vocals. Released Feb 1983 this double album is a definate classic and must own for any Prince fan. 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious and Automatic feed your pop craving and D.M.S.R, Something in the water (Does Not Compute), Lady Cab Driver, and my favorite track on this album All The Critics Love U In New York feed your dance craving. Free and International Lover feed your slow jams craving. This album also had many significant points that are often overlooked by the casual fan. "I will buy you Diamonds and Pearls" in 1983! Credited on "The Time's" first album was an unknown Jamie Starr who is also credited on this album and Prince claims "Jamie Starr is a thief!, It's time to fix your clock(A reference to The Time)" in D.M.S.R. Which we later learn the entire album was written by Prince and he played all the instruments on the album under the alias Jamie Starr. This album is unlike alot of Prince albums as it is easily dated back to the 80's but honestly it doesn't hurt this collection one bit. This is not the best Prince album but that is not due to the quality of this record. It is better than nearly every album from it's era. Prince has over 20+ albums rating this one the best would be difficult but that is because Prince has touched every genre of music and he is so many things to so many people. This is a must have for anyone who grew up in the 80's.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Ambitious & Innovative Prince Masterwork
Prince, barely in his 20's, recorded a cultural landmark in 1982, called "1999". It showed how genius could turn vulgarity into erotica, synthesizers into orchestral weapons, and weirdness into eccentricity. This double-album introduced his band, The Revolution, before they came out fully on his 1984 seminal album, "Purple Rain". But on this album, he's still a one-man band, mastering the synthesizers and the experimental Linn drum machine. The album also broke through his 1981 album, "Controversy", which was a backlashed and disappointing set. This double-album (now compact disc) is way too extended. There are only 11 songs, but some of the songs extend 6 or 9 minutes long. It's really not like a typical double album, having a range of musical styles or having far-reaching scopes. It's an album that has extended dance jams and ballads. The album opens up with the famous title track, "1999", a song about dancing through the night even as nuclear war erupts. The song has some killer drum and synthesizer work. The song is a classic. "Little Red Corvette" is a slow, bass-driven song with many liquid-type synthesizers being played throughtout the song. It's another one of those feel-good Prince classics. And it's true, Saturday night does make everything alright! "Delirious" has some catchy synthesizer hooks and killer drum beats (drum programming). The song, itself, has a cool melody. "Let's Pretend We're Married" is an upbeat explicit tune with non-stop computer drum beats. The drum patterns are mellow and the synth is crisp. On this song, his lyrics are downright, sexually explicit and really down-to-earth. The songs starts off nice and lust, and then the synthesizers and drums go into a long breakdown and the song gets too far into sex. What makes this song real surprising is the ending, when he's talking about God and the afterlife. Yes, the song is strange, but it's also brilliant. Then, after the 7-minute, "Let's Pretend We're Married" fades away, the 8-minute, "D.M.S.R" comes in. "D.M.S.R" is a funky, dance song with chunky synthesizer fills, repeated drums, and bloated, yet rhythmic guitars. The song sounds like a Morris Day cut. "Automatic" is a song that has many sex-laden lyrics and a funky beat. On this song, the synthesizer overlaps the drum beat, to show the listener how the beats fit together. "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)" is an up-tempo, experimental tune that features a smooth non-stop drum beat. "Free" is a syrupy, political anthem, that has a somewhat spiritual vibe in it. "Lady Cab Driver" is an 8-minute, up-tempo tune that has Prince making some kind of sexual fantasy. It's really a notorious, electro-funk cut. "All The Critics Love U In New York" is a strange, upbeat tune that has Prince attacking the hipsters. "International Lover" is a slow, R&B cut with Prince having a passionate night with a lover in terms of flying an airliner (Prince International). The album, "1999", was probably one of the best releases to come out in 1982-83. It was not only Prince's first megahit, but it was his first masterwork. In my opinion, it laid the groundwork for his next classic, "Purple Rain". The one thing that shocked me the most about this album was that it didn't (and still doesn't) have any "parental advisory" sticker on the cover or anywhere on the album, with all the explicit themes some of the songs have. "1999" still remains one of the definitive statements of the 80's. Though, it's not the apex or pinnacle of Prince's career, it's still Prince at his best. Yes, "1999" is one of Prince's most experimental and self-indulgent works, but it's an ambitious and innovative classic. This is a 5-star must buy. A+ ... Read more
