Editorial Review

Where Rancid's eponymous 2000 album saw the band attempting to re-seize the moral high ground by aping the hardcore sound of the early 1980s, Indestructible is a return to the eclectic mix of their own breakthrough album And Out Come the Wolves. Thus "Red Hot Moon" and "Memphis" are melancholy, Clash-inspired grooves, "Arrested in Shanghai" and "Back Up Against the Wall" are melodic pop rock, while "Out of Control" and "Born Frustrated" are screaming punk assaults. Their politics, naturally, remain sound, as evinced by "Ivory Coast" and the anti-violence anthem "Spirit of '87". --Dominic Wills ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don'ttrust all the whiny fake punks!!!
First of all don't get suckered in by these kids who claim to be old school Rancid fans, they aren't.Anyone who buys lemon shampoo on Amazon and listens to Thursday probably shouldn't be commenting on how un-punk Rancid is.This is actually a really strong Rancid record. It has a good mix of songs. You will hear horns, piano, rockabilly gutiar, and some heavy punk chords.Imagine that!!! Actual musicanship!!!Sorry if your pissed that Rancid isn't making Lets Go over and over again.I think about how the Clash evolved and I just have to laugh, because these same "internet punks" would have hated London Calling and Sandanista. So if you like The Clash, Gene Vincent, The Specials, Dub reggae, and early 80's hardcore buy this record.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop Crying
On a lot of forums, you see people complaining and crying that "Rancid lost thier edege..." That's B.S. All Rancid did with this album was re-emerge with thier classically eclectic sound. On "Life Won't Wait..." the band went totally ska/reggae, while "2000" was hardcore punk. This is a retreat to the mixed punk/ska style Rancid is famous for, and I applaud the effort. Songs like "Spirit of '87" and "stay out of control" kick the door down with punk energy, "Red Hot Moon" is a sad and telling story of the life of a doomed street kid, and "The other Side" is a touching tribute to Lars' deceased brother. The record on the whole is like a punch in the teeth you just want more of, keep on playing boys!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst yet...
Before I get judged, I'd like to say that I've been listening to Rancid for over 10 years.I've loved all thier albums but this one leaves me cold.I'm not saying they 'sold out'. That would be impossible as how they're all already filthy rich and have changed thier styles on almost every album.(Like Green Day, I'd say they simply went in a different direction. If you change you're style for the sake of change it's not selling out.You might as well say they sold out with Life Won't Wait then, because it had such heavy ska tones.)

Anyway, back to this album. At first I thought it was a new Transplants album.Where is Lars?Remember how they used to -share- lyrics and Lars sang lead on about half the songs?Remember when his vocals weren't reduced to back up choruses and "whoa whoa whoas"?The musical style is just like the Transplants. The lyrics are, frankly, pathetic. They sound like Cat in The Hat rhymes.it's that same, let's-string-words-together-cause-they-rhyme Transplants rapping style.Barf.What happened to writing songs about things that -meant- something to you? Why, on the album right before this one, didn't Tim sing "I hate your band / you understand / you got no passion / it's all fashion"?Way to go Tim.Hope you're having fun hanging with the biggest all-fashion-no-passion "punks" (and I use the term loosely as possible) of the decade, Good Charlotte.he's lost it somewhere and it makes me sad.

Had this cd been released by some newbie punk band I would have said it sucked.Just because I'm a fan of Rancid's doesn't mean I have to declare everything they put out as 'the greatest'.I'm not averse to different kinds of music, or bands who change their style.I rock out to Rainer Maria and Oxymoron and Bacilos. My musical taste runs across the board.Hell, I even liked The Transplant CD (well, about half of it).And if Tim wants to make another, go ahead.Just don't label it as a Rancid CD this time.

Indestructible: 0 out of 5
Rancid (2004): 5 out of 5
The Transplants: 3 out of 5
Lars & The Bastards: 5 out of 5

I'm still a rancid fan by all rights, in fact I was lsitening to "Let's Go" as I wrote this. But this album, well, it can go straight to the dump for all I care.

I guess I never realized that what I liked most about Rancid wasn't Tim the frontman. It was what Lars brought, that surge of street punk, which sadly is absent from this album. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Just as Green Day aped the Ramones, their contemporaries in this Southern California punk quartet aspired to be the Clash. But also like Green Day, Rancid's fresh approach and excellent songs (including the ska-punk MTV hit "Time Bomb" and the anthemic "Roots Radicals") rose far above tribute-band level. And poet Jim Carroll (The Basketball Diaries) adds spoken-word stream-of-consciousness to the dour "Junkyman." While 19 songs makes this 1995 CD drag on a bit too long, Wolves is evidence of punk rock's relevance a full two decades after the Sex Pistols. --Steve Knopper ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rancids Breakthough album.
Not many bands can hold there own in a scene(Especially one as unforgiving as the punk scene) after 10 years worth of albums and MTV airplay. But thankfully rancid have,They have been accused of selling out, softening up,Being Pop punk and everything inbetween and through it all they still Hold their heads high and do what they always did, which happened to be making Good "modern"Punk rock. This album was rancids break though album. Its 19 tracks of OI,Ska and hardcore tinged Punk rock it also managed to have Major labels and MTV wiping drool from their mouths, especially after Time bomb and Ruby Soho hit the airwaves. As the title suggests rancid knew the major labels would come running and they did.Thankfully they refused to be bought out.Almost anyone of these 19 tracks could have been a single all as catchy as the next and touching on various subjectsEtc,Exessive Drug use, racism,Homelessness. The one thing ive always respected about this band is everything they do is done with heart and this album is no different. Many bands touch on similiar subjects but have no sincerity at all.Rancid on the other hand tell a story in every track and they all come from the heart. Its certainly not rancids best(not in my view anyway),but it is the most accesible and if your new to rancid this would be the way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2nd favorite by Rancid
But although it's only 2nd I suggest getting this as your First Rancid album. It's their breakthrough album for a reason. However, although the overall sound is great and the musicianship is great, this album can be really repetitive. The second half of the album is very easy to get lost in and although some songs stick out (Daly City Train, Disorder and Dissarray) you'll find that most of it sounds very similar.
I still suggest getting this though, it's a masterpiece and be sure to pick up Rancid [2000] also (the one with the skull on it), I believe that is Rancid's best album to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars ...and out come the worst album by rancid
This album is a fan favorite for some. Some can't get enoguh of Ruby Soho. time bomb and Roots radicals were all some of the most popular rancid songs. But, not everyone will agree. I think this album wasn't as good. it's still good, just not like their other albums.

let's getto the duds. I hated the songs As Wicked, the way I fell about you, she's automatic, and the terrible Ruby Soho. There just lame, boring, and have bad choruses. The solos aren't very good. 4 duds is pretty bad. plus, the songs can be repetitive, and this is a CD that I sometimes skip through.

There are still some great songs. i love Time bomb, with it's killer3rd verse. Disorder and Dissaray has a chorus that uses two words:Crucify Me. olympia Way has a great chorus like start now(My favorite Rancid song).Junkie man is also great, with a poet reading something.

My favorite song on this CD isOld Friend. With it's solos, use of two gutairs, singing, and killer bass line. it stands out from the rest. plus it's not a song you can just skip.

Bottom line: Any ska fan should buy this. listen to samples first. before deciding.

Albums that make Amazon.com's yearly "best of" list aresometimes judged using high-falutin' artsy talk. Rancid haslanded on the list because it compelled editors to scribble anarchysymbols in public hallways, buy skateboards, and start punk bands.Twenty-two songs, 39 minutes, and not one wasted second. 4-0 out of 5 stars Where did that come from.
Its obvious Rancid have always thrown some hardcore into the mix,The Difference with this however is its not just thrown into the mix,it IS Plain straight forward hardcore punk.Gone are the Ska and reggae sounds and the Sing along choruses and taking their place is F*%# You lyrics and Incredible instrumental work (Namely Freemans Mach 5 speed Bass solos)which would make even Claypools jaw drop.Anyone who instantly thought Oh yay another Clash worship album is sadly mistaken. This has more in common with the fury of the pistols (only with talent). The album is just in your face hardcore punk from Track 1 to track 22 touching on everything from The media to war to backstabbers and Scenesters. If what you are looking for is Melodic commercially borderline punk rock DONT BUY THIS.But if on the other hand you want Furious In your face punk,You cant look past this one.In my view rancids best work to date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rancid at their best
Although I do think this is Rancid's best, I suggest getting And Out Come The Wolves first.
With that said, this album is nothing short of phenominal. Just because I love it so much I'll do a track by track breakdown.

Don Giovanni 5/5 Great opener, really lets you know that this ain't Life Won't Wait part II.
Disgruntled 5/5 Another very short fast hardcore song with a real cool guitar solo in the middle.
It's Quite Alright 5/5 very catchy yet still fits on the album, one of my favorites. Actually of decent length.
Let Me Go 6/5 By far my favorite Rancid song and possibly favorite song ever, just everything is great about it. Worth the money just for this song.
I Am Forever 5/5 Starts out slow then turns into another hardcore screamer, cool song.
Poison 5/5 Catchy and hard this song is another favorite off the album.
Loki 4/5 Just a bit too short at 47 seconds but I like it
Black Hawk Down 4/5 Good but just not my thing, kinda repetitive
Rwanda 5/5 Another song that really stands out, it's catch yet fits on the album and sounds great you'll never get bored of it
Corruption 5/5 Very hardcore screaming song by lars I love it.
Antennas 5/5 Softest on the album and really flows great, a favorite
Rattlesnake 5/5 I love the guitar part at the beginning and the song really has a lot of meaning it's like anti-poser.
Not To Regret 3/5 One of the 2 songs on here that's just really boring for me, I can't get into it
Radio Havana 5/5 Long song at almost 4 minutes and some of Rancid's best I think. A bit out of place on this cd, however.
Axiom 5/5 AMAZING bass solo and the song is just great. Beats Maxwell Murder (other rancid song with a great bass solo) any day.
Black Derby Jacket 5/5 Matt sings this one and I really like his voice, also a great song
Meteor Of War 3/5 The other song I just don't like on here. Yelling 'Joe Brown' over and over doesn't do it for me.
Dead Bodies 6/5 My other favorite on here, Lars' screaming is really amazing and just a great song.
Rigged on a Fix 4/5 Matt sings this one and it's cool but nothing outstanding
Young Al Capone 4/5 kinda slips past the radar, you have to listen to the album a couple times before noticing it.
Reconcilation 5/5 Matt's last song on here, really cool
GGF 5/5 Kinda sad song about an old friend of Lint's but awesome closer, the last line "This is Rancid signing out for now, see you guys next time" is just so cool, you don't see Blink 182 or other poser bands ending their cds like that

Anyways this is such an awesome cd it's nonstop action, fast all the way though and you will love it if you like punk, Even if you don't think you like hardcore punk you have to get this.

(Oh and this album also comes with a poster, or at least the version I bought did, which makes it definately worth your $$$)

5-0 out of 5 stars Rancid minus the ska/Reggae influence
Lets not overthink this one too much, its just Rancid stripping their music down to pure hardcore punk, as they did with Rancid 93,their debut album. If you dont like hardcore punk you wont like this album so dont expect another Out comes the wolves, or LIfe wont Wait. Rancid's best quality is the ability to change directions with each album and keep the music fresh. I believe thats the only thing they were trying to achieve with this album, nothing more. This album is not a cover up for Life Wont Wait, cuz I believe the band is proud of that album and most fans including myself enjoyed it for what it was. Rancid pulls off this hardcore style of punk better than most bands who do this full time, the bass is still apparent and each song is catchy and stands out from the rest. This album could be listened to from beginning to end. Its not too long to keep interest or short enough to feel cheated. This one's not for everyone, but proves Rancid reign as true pioneers of modern PUnk. There was The Clash, and The Ramones, then BAd REligion, and now there's RAncid. Lump them in with those legendary bands with no problems or hesitations. THIS IS NOT A SELL-OUT RECORD!!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fast, loud, and like Green day
The second album from Rancid is fast and less hardcore. it still is catchy, and it is filled withcatchy choruses and solos. its an album withmore pop, but still punk. it's just like greenday.

since each song is short, it's easy to blow through tracks. Some are like a minute. And there grooves. each song is good until the end, 23 is a bad song, so the Cd ends there.

It's still has the Rancid feel with solo and bass, where Freeman sings. It's filled with ngreat choruses, and verses. Sometines the verses exceed the chorus. Some good songs are Salvation, nilhism, radio, Sidekick, and I really liked tenderloin too. others were St. Mary, Burn, I am the one and......Just Buy it.

It's one of there earely CD's too. there is no ska or that hardcore like their fith. It's like Greenday. It's the first CD to feature lars. Just avoid 23 if you are like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rancid in their prime
Rancid is one of the best bands to come out of the 90's, let alone one of the best punk bands to do so.If you enjoy a good cali punk band, and you've either exhausted all of your NOFX sources or are just looking for something different, then Rancid is the band for you.As long as Tim's voice doesn't annoy you (I'll admit it may be an acquired taste), there are enough songs on this cd to make any punk rock enthusiast happy. This is Rancid at their prime, with not too much punk to make them hardcore, and just enough ska to get you bobbing your head to the beats, this album is, in my opinion, the definitive Rancid cd to purchase.Rancid is both a good band to cut your punk rock teeth on, and a great band to listen to no matter how long you've enjoyed the punk scene. All in all, this is an essential cd for any collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This May be the best album of the ninteys
It seriously may be. Strangly, it came out the same year as nofx punk in drublic, and green day dookie. They all gave thanks to eachother to. and billy joe co-wrote the song radio with rancid. Kinda cool. But watever. If your not a green day fan(which i can understand) and your a punker, you'll still probebly love this cd. Nihilism is an incredible song. catchy, but very punk. Thats what this cd is. It's real punk, but somehow rancid made it catchy. Radio is possibly the best song on the cd. Sidekick, salvation, tenderloin and let's go are an incredible stream of perfect songs. Then there is as one, not bad but the chorus is so boring, which is the core of most rancid songs. I'm not going to say every song but i'll tell you that ballad of jimmy and john, gunshot, ghetto box, dope sick girl, and 7 years down will blow you away. this is rancid, before they met good charlotte. And they are PUNK! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Got a Good Feeling About a Good Album
Before "Ruby Soho", before "Time Bomb", and even before "Salvation", there was a band called Rancid that made raw punk rock with tons of energy and lots of experience (Operation Ivy). It shows extremely well in this album. Fast, angry, and highly motivating, this debut from the past Ivy members (with the addition of Brett Reed), is one of the most passionate punk rock albums ever produced. "Hyena", "Trenches", "Detroit", "Bottle", and "Rats in the Alleyway" are great songs with great sound. This whole album is great from start to end and anyone into Rancid now and aren't familiar with their old sound need to pick this album up. This is the Rancid I became a fan of.

5-0 out of 5 stars There rancid at playing!!!
JUST KIDDING!!!!!! this is one of there better albums. before lars joined, it was a 3 man band. Even without lars, it has enough, if not more energy than their others.

The dud is the hidden track Union Blood. it's not good, but hey, it's hidden. It's not that great. Whirlind and the Bottle are just Corney. the bottle has a weird chorus. the beggining is interesting but it gets pretty stupid.

16 tracks on a CD for rancid just dosen't seem right. They usually have lot's of songs. also the song is a little embarrsing walking around listening to. Even if they can't hear you. It's just one of those feelings. if you know.

The songs at the beggining are the best. I go in a marathon. I can listen to Hyena, a hit not on MTV. rats in the hallway it's swank, talking about hallucinating. Detroit has bass beat. And Get of my way is a song that is really good. listen to IT!
The choruses are pretty basic. but's it's hardcore. many would think it's noise. the cover is a little strange. My favorites were 2,3,4,6,12,13, and 16.

If you are a punk with hardcore tastes, this is probaly the rancid album for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rancid RULES!!!
I never thought rancid could make an album like this. After i heard and out come the wolves i was dissapointed(though now that i'm into rancid that one is awsome). There new release, indestructible is just made for the radio. But this is true punk. Matts bass is amazing, and it really is what every punker should be.All rancids albums are great except indestructible. People may critize me for liking and out come the wolves, but even though it is popular, they showed thats not what they care about by releasing the experimental, life wont wait.THIS IS PUNK. after hearing this i almost thought punk wasn't dead after all. But although this is punk, the whole scene crashed and died. But for more real punk check out operation ivy too. They turned into rancid. This cd is so awsome. It makes me want to have grown up in oakland. Thats how awsome it is. Well See ya in the pit!!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Life Won't Wait bursts with a thrilling ambition. On Rancid's past albums, these Clash-via-Cali punks came on with an invigorating twin guitar attack that sounded like it wanted to take over the world--to set it free!--and their fourth release continues in this radical vein, insisting that "all people must rise and decide your fate." But there's newfound ambition in the music, too, as the band's raging attack is supplemented now by new sounds (rocksteady and rockabilly, even doo-wop and soul), new musical textures (the exhilarating "Crane Fist" features a piano battling a B3 organ), and new sources of inspiration, as the boys shout out for Salvadoran immigrants and brag like rappers in anthem after anthem of urgent, beautiful poetry. --David Cantwell ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Where the hell did this come from???
Rancid explodes with an onslaught of sounds here. One minute you're hearing dub, then Rockabilly, then straight ska. There is nothing better than when a good band starts to explore their sound. It's also very risky, and that's what makes this such a great record. They left their comfort zone and made a punk rawk masterpiece. This record has a very Europe by way of Jamaica feel to it.Just buy the damn thing and see for yourself!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Racid's London Calling
After years of playing solid punkers that could be mistaken for harder versions of Clash songs, Rancid finally whips out a classic.Their ambition was sure lofty: random excerpts from Bakunin's book are recited about catchy reggae- and blues-influenced punk tunes, a menagerie of guest musicians appear ranging from Dickey Barret through Buju Banton and everyone in between, pianos, B3s, horns, harmonicas, xylophones, steel drums, arranging by outside songwriters, and crispy-clean production span this massive 22-song record that is twice as long as any other punk ablum should be.

But don't dismiss this record immediately for being "less punk" or a "sellout record" (though it did come out dead smack in the middle of the short-lived ska-and-swing hype, true)--give it a few listens no matter how much you may lust for the heavier, faster sound their earlier albums. And unlike ...And Out Come the Wolves, which was a collection of three-chord pop songs, this one truly shows Tim Armstrong's talent for songcraft--unfortunately to never be reproduced (with the exception of 2000's Radio Havana). The lyrics may not be the best in the world, but despite covering topics in pairs from the problems immigrants face (Crane Fist, Hoover Street), Eastern Europe (New Dress, Warsaw), New York's squatter culture (Cocktails, 1998), and even romantic love (Who Would've Thought, Corazon de Oro), the lyrics don't come across as pretentiously-punk-tough or all that repetitive as they do on the more disappointing recent releases by Tim 'n Crew.

There is not a bad song on here, though some may be difficult listens at first.Truly the overlooked "London Calling" of the 90s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rancids most original album
rancid did a bunch of experimental stuff on this album. electric organs, tons of ska/reggae, and just lots of fun. I am so glad they made this album, because the media didn't want experimentals, they wanted pop. This shows rancid was commited to there music, and didn't care about going platinum. I am a hard-core rancid fan, and stand by all there releases, except indestructable. I'm still very unstable with it. well here's what i think about the songs.
Intro 10/10-awsome intro to the record fast, punk and full of cool instuments playing really high notes
Bloodclot 10/10-maybe the best on the cd, definatly one of rancid's best songs.
Hoover street 10/10-not exactly punk, but really fun, soft verses and slightly louder chorus.
Black lung 10/10-another classic punk song by the masters, rancid.
Life won't wait 10/10-this is a reggae one but it is so good. another favorite of mine. Really wierd but Buju banto makes the song.
New dress 8/10-this one is really good, but not amazing. Still i love to listen to it.
Warsaw 10/10-another punk song with really good lyrics.
Hooligans 9.5/10-this is a reggae ska one with buju banton again. not as good a life wont wait, but still very fun.
crane fist 10/10- this one is so wierd. But there is somthing really cool about it.
Leicester square 10/10-really good. a favorite of mine.
Backslide 10/10-this is a really good ska song. Tims vocals work well on this one. another favorite.
Who would've thought 9/10-great ballad, i don't think rancid has ever written something like this before.
Cash, culture and violence 9/10- good punk song, great lyrics, but the chorus is lacking a tiny something.
Cocktails 9.5/10-i love the harmonica on this ska song. reallly really good song.
the wolf 10/10-classic rancid, great chorus, could have come of lets go!.
1998 10/10- love this song. great bass work matt. another punk one.
Lady liberty 8/10-i used to hate this one, but its growing on me. it sounds a little hill billy, but it is grownig on me.
Wrongful suspicion 10/10-great ska song, really it is just such a good song.
Turntable 10/10- one of my favorites. yes i have alot of favorits.
something in the world today 10/10-awsome rock song.maybe the best punk song on the album. just really energetic and fun.
Corazon de oro 10/10-another ballad, and it is perfect in every way. this one is epic and one of rancids best works.
coppers 10/10- excellent finish with and island reggae song featuring steel drums, another appearence from buju banton and an excellent finish to and excellent album.
Life won't wait shows rancid is a great band who do whatever they feel like. You guy writing reveiws out there seem to hate rancid[2000]. You suck. rancid [2000] is great, and everyone overlooks it. If rancid didn't change, we'd never have this genius ska/reggae. Its just another modification on there sound. But enough about that. Life won't wait rules so get that, and give rancid[2000] another chance. Rancid is the best ninties punk revival band so they better make up for indestructible. Well, see ya in the pit

The idea of two punk giants fighting it out in the studio was born on the hallowed 7-inch single, but these two summer-tour veterans and Epitaph labelmates have brought it to the modern age on the third installment of BYO's Split Series. Berkeley, California's Rancid bring attitude and tradition to the bill. Old-school oafs NOFX bring humor and frontman Fat Mike, a veritable underground punk legend and karaoke king. Like a medical experiment gone so wrong it's right, together they take on six of each other's songs and the results are riveting--whether it's Rancid mowing through mosh-pit standards like "Moron Brothers" and "Stickin' in My Eye," or NOFX finding the funny side of the cod-reggae Clash tribute "Radio" and triumphantly thrashing "Corazon de Oro." --Aidin Vaziri ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I love Rancid, but...
Rancid is my favorite band, but nofx ruined their songs. their covers of antenas and olympia werent too bad, but rancids are way better. Rancid however did a much better job of covering nofx's songs. Nofx changed the style way too much, it didnt seem right.

4-0 out of 5 stars 2 great bands
usually when someone rewrites the classics it is pure sh**. but when rancid/nofx does it is killer. the best was
nofx-Olympia,WA
rancid-bob
these 2 songs are actually better than the original versions.

5-0 out of 5 stars AHHHHHHHH!!!
OMFG! This is the best record ever! Rancid, NoFx! What a great mix! And I thought NoFx did a good job singing "BOB"! ... Read more

Editorial Review

A full 20 years after their formation, NOFX still proudly possess a rebellious spirit. Several of the tracks on War on Errorism name-check great punk bands of the past who's code of ethics NOFX follow. This album, it is made very clear, is real punk. Indeed, so keen are NOFX to distance themselves from mindless frat-punk that they've made a serious effort to address politics in an adult fashion. George Bush is attacked with vigor, as are imperialists, warmongers and greedy corporate directors. Listeners are urged to fight the apathy that keeps the masses in thrall to corrupt government and business. But no NOFX album could stay serious for long. Their heady mix of punk, pop, and ska demands a lighthearted approach and "She's Nubs," the tale of a limbless punk girl, and "Mattersville" about a community of punks on pension, are blasts of fun. --Dominic Wills ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!noFX RULES!!!!!!
This album is really awesome!!Every track of it is very good!!Everytime i hear their songs the more i i get inspired to write songs about the government. It makes me wanna slam and mosh!! Especially the song "FRANCO UNAMERICAN" AND "IDIOTS ARE TAKING OVER". So, I think you should buy this album mann. I guarantee you will not regret!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It freaks me out....This band gives me an inspiration!!!!
Every track of this album is great. MY SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND SKATE track makes me wanna slam and bust some heads. I mean, it gives me this sudden energy to play playt punkrock, skate and write songs aout the government

1-0 out of 5 stars Can You Be Taking Seriously When You're An Idiot?
That's the baisc problem that NOFX's "The War on Errorism" faces. Can you make a thought provoking, serious record detailing the current state of the world when you have made a career out of writting songs about, and acting like, idiots. Well, shock of shocks, you can't.
Because the problem is that Fat Mike just isn't informed enough to make any convincing arguements. The lyrics deal in the territory that Bush and his supporters are idiots. Well, so are you buddy. So what makes you better?
Now don't take this as glowing recomendation of the Bush adminstration because I proudly voted for John Kerry and still believe that Bush is one our worst Presidents, but you can't fight ignorance with ignorance as Fat Mike seems to hope.
Musically the record is the exact same as every NOFX record that proceed it, a light guitar lead over mid-tempo pop punk without much of the pop, or the punk for that matter. Lyrically when addressing politics Mike comes across as an idiot, a yokul who was told Bush was bad and decided that, yeah Bush is bad(hearing him in interviews doesn't go against the point), and on other songs is the same as every other NOFX record. At one point he even remarks that he has "been reading a little Noam Chomsky", which was a shock to me because I didn't know he could read(I think this whole band is stupid, but I only know the leaders name.)
It should be pretty obvious that I am no fan of NOFX and I will not lie to you and say that I am. But I am an objective music listener and somone of reasonable intellegence and I can tell that this record is just crap. Go back to writting songs about, you know, beer bongs monkies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All Around Radness
This is the first NOFX album I ever saw in a store but i bought 9 other NOFX cds over the years before i finally bought this one today. Its awesome, why did i not buy it sooner? I think this is the album where NOFX really found their sound. This is in my top three favorite NOFX albums-number 1 being Heavy Petting Zoo and number 2 being 45 or 46 songs...This probably would be tied with Petting Zoo had Fat Mike's voice been better on Ribbed(not that he's a great singer now) oh well, you get used to it.I love how the political/soci-political songs on this cd are written. I can really relate. I wish they were still like that and less lefty, but i still learn a lot from them.I am rambling. My favorite songs are Showerdays (very catchy), New Boobs (hilarious), Ganoherpasyphalaids (awesome, classic NOFX guitar riffs), and the Malachi Crunch (this is the great soci-political song writing I'm talkin about). All in all this is a definate "must have."But if you plan on this being your first NOFX album i reccomend you buy Punk in Drublic also or instead.(...)

5-0 out of 5 stars album of the nineties...
this album is with no doubt the best material nofx have made,if you put on war on errorism or pump up the vaaluum then compare it to ribbed, well you cant.green corn comes in and wow, what a classic album.just a pity after punk in drublic things started slipping away, apart from the decline which is another masterpiece...at that time fat mike and co were punk f*****g.rock...

5-0 out of 5 stars Nofx strikes gold
Nofx really preformed on this one. They gave us a album full of classic after classics. This is what i think of the songs.

Linolium-5/5-awsome song. The melody is kind of obscure, but hey, who cares. This rocks.
Leave it alone-5/5-nofx's most famous song, it just rocks.
Dig-5/5-at first i didn't care for this one, but it grew on me and now it is a favorite of mine.
the cause-5/5-another classic, this album is incredibly consitant.
dont call me white-5/5-one of my all time favorite nofx song, maybe the best on this cd.
a perfect government-5/5-when will these perfects songs stop. This song is polictcal and an excellent punk song.
The brews-5/5-this one stood out the first time i heard it, and it continues to be awsome.
dying decree-4/5-used to be my favorite, but it wore out. Still great song.
fleas-4/5-this one just never stuck out for me. I like it alot, just not perfect.
lori myers 4.5/5-this one is really cool and i like the nasty whor's voice unlike all the other reveiwers. I ain't perfect, but
its preety close to it.
jeff wears berkinstocks-4/5-funny but not incredible. unlike some other funny songs, this one doesn't start to piss you off once you've heard it alot of times.
punk guy-5/5-short and sweet, one of my favorite songs.
the happy guy-5/5-maybe the best on the album. just love this one. good lyrics and great guitar solo.
reeko-5/5-starts like ska, blues, and turns punk. Awsome lyrics and a really fun song.
scavenger type-5/5-and acoustic song, with really good lyrics, and quite depressing. Very dramatic ending to an awsome cd.
hidden stuff-3/5-if you leave the cd player on after scavenger type, you'll hear some funny stuff, and el hefe's impersonations are hilarious. On pump up the vallum, in a theme from a nofx album, they make reference to these impersonations.

After reading the scores on those songs, you should relize that this is an album to buy. this is the definitive nofx album to buy, so just go get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this album!
Oh MY GOD!This CD rules like crazy! It's Freaki'n amazing!
The ultimate song collection has such classics as,"The Brews","Linoleom",and "Punk guy".

"The Brews":10/10
This song is the best song ever! It has funny, original lyrics and talks about ANTI swastikas!Ha Ha! Nazis suck!

"Dig":10/10
This song is so awesome!it features ska, punk, and slow all in one cool little song. What an awesome song!

"Linoleom":10/10
This song is very fast and has hysterical lyrics. It is so awesome!

"Punk Guy":10/10
I love this song. I crack up everytime I hear the old hillbilly in this song say,"Ah hell, he's even more punk than me".This song rules!

Those are the highlights of an awesome NOFX album! Buy this CD right now!

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS CD MAKES ME HAPPY!!!
This is my personal favorite NOFX CD. I can listen to every track without the inclination to skip one....even My Heart Is Yearning. It is the first NOFX CD I ever bought and Im glad I did. Its still one of my favorite CDs ever. Here's a big fat review of it:

Linoleum: The classic NOFX song. Best on the whole album.

Leave It Alone: Short lil ditty about conformity. I like it but the message has been said a lot before.

Dig: Another favorite. I'm not sure what its about but its awesum!! Has a cool ska break in the middle.

The Cause: Nice short song about fighting for something you believe in.

Don't Call Me White: This song has started to skip on my copy of the CD and it REALLY SUCKS!! This song is about racism and has some really well thought out lyrics. I miss it.

My Heart Is Yearning: Weird but still cool song. Very reggae sounding. El Hefe sings this one. I think its about STDs.

A Perfect Government: Starts slow then goes into an attack of politcal awareness. Some of the best lyrisc I've ever seen. Mark Curry wrote this..not NOFX.

The Brews: A JEWISH OI SONG!!! Haha its awesum.

The Quass: A cool fast instrumental that goes into....

Dying Degree: The darkest song on the album but still very catchy. Its about being broke.

Fleas: About the hypocrisy of adults. Way too catchy tho.

Lori Meyers: Song about this girl that Fat Mike "did stuff" with when he was a kid. This chick from the Muffs (I think) sings one of the verses.

Jeff Wears Birkenstocks: Fun song about this hippie guy.

Punk Guy: Song about this guy who's a punk and does punk things. Lots of references.

The Happy Guy: Song about this guy and his religion I think.

Reeko: Slow relaxed ska song....then revvs up into a fast paced punk tune.

Scavenger Type: WOW NOFX DID AN ACOUSTIC!! I think its about homelessness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars White Trash, Two Heebs and A Bean
This cd is a great example of how Nofx is able to write good songs with good lyrics and instramentals. It is amazingly good with great songs such as Bob, Stickin' In My Eye, Soul Doubt and Please Play This Song On The Radio. All the other songs are good as well but those are the best. This is my favorite cd of Nofx and I recomend it to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars White Trash Two Heebs and A Bean.

"I wanna be your baby" is a super high energy track that will blow anyone away it is pure Punk for Skaters and Surfers.

4-0 out of 5 stars the closest NOFX ever got to maturity...
Its the year 1995. Punk just broke into mainstream last year. Green day sold millions, The Offspring sold millions. Bad Religion released their most best selling album to date: Stranger than Fiction. NOFX released Punk in Drublic during that period. Musically they were peaking, but the album wasn't accessible enough to join the other punk bands newly found fame. So they made Heavy Petting Zoo. Listen to it, and you will hear the closest NOFX ever got to maturity. Here they ALMOST admit they weren't kids anymore. The songs are slower and longer this time around. There is some ska but just little enough not to be considered a skapunk band.

Well after this.... you know the Story. They suddenly realised that they werent punk anymore and reclaimed their old stupid ideals, trying so hard NOT to show any of the maturity that made their last albums so good. Result is the horrible "So long and Thanks for all the shoes", the even more horrible "Pump up the valuum" and the downright flush it through the toilet ridiculous political statement called "war on errorism".

Get this album together with White trash 2 heebs & a bean and Punk in drublic and ignore everything else this band has put out.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Begining of the End!
Well NoFX has been around for quite a while, and they have put out a ton of great albums. But now they're fading away and this might be there last decent album.Don't get me wrong the albums after this arn't terrible but NoFX has changed.

This album is a lot lighter and slower than anything NoFx put out prier to 1995.In my opinion it's not as good. There are no stand out tracks and I find myself skipping tracks constantly.Since this effort every album following this is also not that good.It seems like it's missing something, there is hardly any energy in this.It is sort of like this album was made in a week.

Overall this album isn't a complete waiste. It's good on a rare occasion.Go ahead and pick this up but it's quite different

Editorial Review

As long as there are bands like NoFX, punk rock needn't worry about requiring life support. Ten years into a remarkable run of smart, snotty, cynical, hopeful, and always in-your-face-albums, Fat Mike and his crew still maintain a winning percentage to rival the Harlem Globetrotters'. Snippets of ska and outright pop enter the mix here and there on this eighth full-length release, but whatever the sound, the mood is as thoroughly smart-ass as ever. More often than not, NoFX's barbs are directed inward--as you might expect from a band with a concert disc entitled I Heard They Suck Live. That giddily defeatist mood is captured perfectly on lunatic sneerfests like "It's My Job to Keep Punk Rock Elite" and "All Outta Angst." --David Sprague ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Complete Album by NOFX
From beginning to end this album compares to Rancid's "...and out comes the wolves" and Lagwagon's "Double Pladdinum." Some moron wrote that you only need to listen to it once on his review and that is all you need because it is not an album of substance but an album to be passed over and taken for granted, for the main reason that so many albums are passed over because of faulty and erroneous accusations and subjective views of what punk rock should be.If and album can be played front to back and appreciated for musical complexity and stylistic qualities throughout, what is there to condemn. This is the ultimate punk rock album.Fat Mike might like to dismiss this album as an album full of errors, mainly because it contains ska.He believes that ska has gone mainstream, but so hasn't punk.It is fine if expression comes in brass form, reggae form or pure punk rock, which Mike calls "Pump up the Valuum" which is by far the worst album ever made by NOFX.So long and thanks for all the shoes is the most serious product put out by NOFX.Yes, we all like The Brews and the Moron Brothers, some other sorry NOFX fan may hit repeat on their CD player to Please Play this Song on the Radio. But, if So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes was taken more seriously, it could have went down on history as the best punk rock album ever.Tell me your favorite punk rock album, give me adequate reasoning and I'll honor your opinion. But, please do not rely on old faithfuls like the clash, ramones, or any other washed up band you have a prejudice for. And whatever you do, like some unreasonable inbred did, do not say that the album has fillers in it.This is an album of pure and lyrically significant punk rock for the ages.Key songs:" punk rock elite, and all his suits are torn (pinnacle song on the album), kill the rock stars and champs elysees. Some brain dead Ashlee Simpson lover actually stated that Eat the Meek was a filler song.It is a brilliant (a word describing something dumb) song and even better on the dub remix on 45 or 46 songs...

4-0 out of 5 stars Wussy

I like the hidden part at the end two.<br /> You will find yourself singin' the songs for the rest of your life. personally, my favorite songs on it are "It's my job to keep punk rock elite"because the title is telling the truth and also &amp;quot;Kids of the K-Hole&amp;quot; but all of the songs are incredible. Editorial Review

There are two sides to the punk coin. On one side, serious and somewhat political acts such as Fugazi are in it for the pulpit. NOFX is firmly stamped on the other side, where it's less soapbox than a threat of getting their mouths washed out with soap. Not since the heyday of the Dead Milkmen has there been a more insincere and politically incorrect punk-rock outfit, and the world is a more entertaining place for it. Pump Up the Valium's lyrics are first-class juvenilia. The backwards fantasy "What's the Matter with Parents Today?" poses a Twilight Zone-like fantasy in which front man fat Mike laments how "Dad's dressing like Motley Crue" and "Mom's hair's dyed bright blue." There are also tracks such as "My Vagina" and "Herojuana," which are pretty self-explanatory. Some might find such nonstop irreverence tedious if the band weren't so tight while being impolite. --Jason Josephes ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, but not quite as good as Punk in Drublic.
This is a great CD but it doesn't quit get 5 stars. This Cd has many of my favorite NOFX songs on it though. It includes my all time favorite,"Dinosaurs will die". It too has the hysterical song,"Thank god it's Monday".And who could forget that classic,"My V****a".This Cd is very good but Punk in Drublic is the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Supercoolness
NOFX has really done a great job this time!
There's nothing that you won't like on here, it's 100% punk & 100% good. Great first album to get from NOFX

5-0 out of 5 stars So insanely good it's insane
I've always liked NOFX but I've never actually got a "real" album from them. I have "The Greatest Songs" and "45 or 46 Songs". This album is really really good. It's loud, melodic, catchy, fast, rude, and Fat Mike's vocals sound very good here.
After reading reviews I thought that I'd run into a few real let-down songs but this album never ceases to amaze.
Some people are saying that the band has "sold out". No. Sold out is "American Idiot", going from punk roots to boring slow rock because that's what the mainstream wants.
(almost) Everybody LOVED So long and thanks for all the shoes, so by going back to a more "punk" sound is not selling out because that's not necessarily what the public wanted.

Buy this cd and you won't set it down, ever. I'm proof that this is a great first NOFX album to get. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The best of the rest
In no way should anyone think of this as a best of. In most ways this CD's title is right on. This two disk set is a look into the work-in-progress that is one of the best fun, working, political, punk band in the twenty-first one hundred block of years yet. The mark that NOFX has made on the punk music front over the last several years might only be equaled by bands like "Sublime" or "The Clash". The greatest thing that NOFX might have in any way against them is that they are continuing to release disks, year after year, as no one has died or tried to destroy the band from within. Good, bad, or just still here (as quite a few of these songs are) NOFX is a band that should be heard. If this is your first NOFX disk try the clasic "Punk In Drublic," before you hit this collection of lesser known tracks. If you are a fan, get into your back pocket and see what else the band has been working on; I promise you will love what you hear. It might not be the best of, but the disk refects well on a band that has been too over looked by "mainstream" radio for far too long.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not good enough to go on our other records? Hardly.
Even if you're that die-hard NOFX fan that owns everything they've ever done, the booklet makes up 75% of this album's price and the unreleased song more than makes up for the other 25%. Just wanted to say that before going on with the review.

Disc One: Couting Sheep. To sum it up in one word: Amazing. NOFX is widely known for the loads of B-sides they slap onto 7" after 7" after 7". This first disc contains all the songs they did specially for compilations and the songs on their 7"s that weren't later put on other records. This includes the entire HOFX LP and most of the songs left off of "Pump Up The Valuum" for various reasons, among others. Highlights of this record are "Pimps and Hookers," "We Threw Gasoline On The Fire And Now We Have Stumps For Arms And No Eyebrows," "Electricity," "Bath Of Least Resistance," "The Plan," "San Francisco Fat" and the esteemed song "Pump Up The Valuum," left off, for reasons unbeknownst to me, the record it shares its title with.

Disc Two: Counting ZZZ's. Some background info for people who aren't very familiar with NOFX. Back in 1996 (or was it '97?), Fat Mike and the band went over to SFO to record a 13-track 7" comprised of entirely new songs. Strangely, Fat Mike was the only one who knew any of these songs. Once they got the studio, he would teach them a song and the first time they went through it without any huge mistakes, they'd put it on tape. The record was recorded in one day. Thus was born the infamous "F**k the Kids" 7". As is said by Fat Mike, "You can't fake that kind of sloppiness." A true punk record indeed. Note that some of the songs on the FTK 7" ("Murder the Government," "I'm Telling Tim," "Stranger Than Fishin'" and "My Name Is Bud") were later re-recorded and put on the records "So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes," "Pump Up The Valuum" and the Bottles To The Ground EP. Since all of NOFX fans loved the record, five years later, in 2001, the band got together to do a second record the same way and called it "Surfer" (with a hillarious cover spoofing the Bad Religion record "Suffer). This time it took two days, and there were 14 songs on the record, but it was still the same golden form of slopiness. One year later, in 2002, both of those records which were at the time only available on Vinyl got put onto the second disc of the album I am reviewing. Many people questioned this act, since Fat Mike once stated he would never release "F**k the Kids" on CD. Though this won't comfort those people much, it's not complete. Purposely, "Stupid Canadians" appears on the original "F**k the Kids" but not this CD, and "Three S**ts To The Wind" appears on the original "Surfer," but not on this. This disc is great indeed. Highlights include "Fun Things To F**k," "Party Enema," "Murder the Government" and "I'm Telling Tim."

So, in conclusion, if you're new to NOFX, start with "Punk In Drublic" and "So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes" -- two of the best punk records to ever be released. After you've got those two, "The Decline EP," and maybe one or two other NOFX records, you should get this as a way to easily listen to all of NOFX's great B-sides without having to buy all their vinyl. It's well worth the cost.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good....or just Fun?
All I have to say about this album is that I've had it for years and I probably don't know half of the songs on it.It get's sort of boring and you can't listen to it all the way through. All in all there is some great stuff on here but there is also a lot of crap on this album. They should have only put 20 songs on this thing and cut out all of the rest.Sure some of the stuff on here is catchy but the best part is the snotty vocals and the lyrics are pure genius.

Don't pick this album up if you want something good, pick this album up if you want something fun. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Is it good?It depends.
My friend gave this CD to me.If you like the albums by NOFX like war on errorism, you probably wont like this.If you listen to music for instrumentls, you probably will. Its just that fat mikes singing is really bad on this cd.He just screams like that guy in the casualties

4-0 out of 5 stars Raw?Bad? No just Good old School PUNK!
This is a great punk cd.Yes it took me about five listens to get into it but after that you get familier with the lyrics and there are some great songs that are true about vegetarians. As far as Nofx this is there rawest album.Overall a good punk cd, but this is not five star material.Overall the vocals are off on almost every note, but who cares it sounds great, yet it does get sort of old.If you like old punk music then pick this up, if you are more picky about your music then pass this one up.

Shut Up Already- 8/10
Freedumb-7/10
Here Comes The Neighborhood-10/10
A200 Club- 8/10
Sloppy English- 7/10
You Put Your Chocolate In My Peanutbutter- 6/10
Mr.Jones- 7/10
Vegetarian Mubmo Jumbo- 8/10
Beer Bong-8/10
Piece-9/10
I Live In A Cake- 6/10
No Problems- 6/10
On The Rag- 10/10
Truck Stop Blues- 7/10

Overall there are no real bad songs, but it does get a bit repetitive. There are some really short song, and some range up to about 3:30.A good punk cd from '91 that only the true punk fans should pick up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best NOFX album ever!
This is by far the best album NOFX ever made. It doesn't have all the pop or ska songs on it like their newer cds. It is pure punk/hardcore. I would recommend this cd to anyone. It is awesome! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars vanilla sex is a sik song
i dont own this album, i probably never will. NOFX would b proud, i ripped them off and downloaded vanilla sex!!Stick it 2 the man, man.But yeah, be good and buy this album, put vanilla sex on repeat coz its a good song.

1-0 out of 5 stars You're All Crazy
When I saw the five star average rating for this album I first thought it was a mistake and thought I had to change it so NOFX's third worst album (behind Maximum Rocknroll and Liberal Animation) doesn't get the best rating. There are some good songs on the album (You Drink, You Drive, You Spill and Life O'Riley) but EVERYTHING that NOFX have done since has been MUCH better they've made 10 albums since this one and I think that all but Heavy Petting Zoo and possibly White Trash deserve 5 stars but this doesn't.
If you want a good NOFX album, Buy any of the later ones (So Long ... And Thanks For All The Shoes and 45 Or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough To Go On Our Other Records are my favourites) S&M Airlines is only good if you want to have all NOFX albums to see how much better they're got, they say themselves that Ribbed was their first album which was good

5-0 out of 5 stars S&M Airlines.
This Album is a really good Album, The song S&M Airlines is really good, the sound of this whole Album is alot more raw than other NOFX Albums a good Album for in the car. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is punk before blink, offspring destroy it
this album is nofx they started like this, they show what punk is about low buget recording, saying what it is about goverment and having fun

5-0 out of 5 stars Poor equipment? Bad sound?PUNK EFFIN' ROCK!!!
I dunno who these cats are saying that this album is piss poor because the equipment and sound suck, but - correct me if I'm wrong - but last time I checked, this is how punk rock started. It's wasn't supposed to be glossy, it wasn't supposed to be poppy.IT WAS PUNK.This is one of my favorite NOFX albums, and I've been listening to them for about ten years now (right before Punk in Drublic came out).Anyways, if you like real punk rock, then this album is freaking great, don't let people fool you.As many others have stated, the Sabbath cover is awesome, and there are many other gems on here.Cops and Donuts is hilarious, Six Pack Girls, and the anti-brain-dead-religious-freak Live Your Life are all bad-ass punk rock songs.Pick it up, and eff it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWSOME!! For a first cd
I love Nofx there songs have inspired me to write some of my own cray songs. This for being there very first album is awsome. I'm not one for heavy metal but there cover of "Iron Man" is way better than the origanal. It's Faster, more speed like the way i like to play it. I think as Nofx has gone on with there carrer there has bein faster and more speedy songs with funny antics. This is more serious and awsome. It kind of reminds me of Rancid and most of the songs like "White Bread" is like Misfits seeing how Fat Mike was a huge Misfits fan growing up. For a first album with out all that high-tec mumbo jumbo s**t there voices sound awsome for live. well this has to be one of the better cds

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best EP
The best EP ever. Just about 12 minutes but it's a rap! Nofx already proved to be awesome! All the songs i like because it feels like anew NOFX but at the same time it feels like good old NOFX. If you never heard much by NOFX then give it a try, it`s only a couple of bucks and it is worth it. Die hard fans, i bet ya already got this if not, you`re gonna die early without it.Just kiddin- really you have to go pick it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars This EP rules. Great cover, great Teaser too.
Give this track a listen for Three of the best Tracks on the new NOFX album. Also Hardcore 84 is worth a listen. It lives up to the name (the hardcore part). The Teaser Track is why to buy this EP, however. It has El Hefe giving you kind of a commercial about the new album. It features sound clips, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A preview of The War On Errorism
A band who shuns the media, with insularity and a fixed opposition to [success] is more quote-unquote "punk" by that idea alone. NOFX could be playing toe-tappin' countrified tunes about sowing your oats, but they would still be the real thing to me. With this short release, a justifiably cynical appetizer to their impending "The War On Errorism" album, you get Fat Mike, El Hefe, Melvin, and drummer Smelly fiddling with clichés while laughing at the "scene" on "Medio-core" ("how was the band, they were okay - not great, but pretty good - they played the songs I knew they would, some old some new, same formula stays true we can concur"). Yet when it all ends the whiff of creative disgust stays in the room with you. When their Rock Against Bush tour visits your college campus, you'll get to see the most spot-on-tight, and seriocomic speed-rock (new genre) laid to wax since, well, their last album. ... Read more
