Like a lot of his jam-band compatriots, Dave Matthews's personality can come off as muted in the studio, but really spreads out live--which makes this a must-have for fans who don't already have the bootleg, or nineteen more from the same period. But absent a hits sampler, Live at Red Rocks could also be the best Matthews album for more tentative listeners. It draws heavily from the Under the Table and Dreaming material, as well as from the then-upcoming Crash. "All Along the Watchtower," previously only available on an indie EP, ends the set. --Gavin McNett ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Before Sgt. Pepper, no one seriously thought of rock music as actual art. That all changed in 1967, though, when John, Paul, George and Ringo (with "A Little Help" from their friend, producer George Martin) created an undeniable work of art which remains, after 30-plus years, one of the most influential albums of all time. From Lennon's evocative word/sound pictures (the trippy "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," the carnival-like "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite") and McCartney's music hall-styled "When I'm 64," to Harrison's Eastern-leaning "Within You Without You," and the avant-garde mini-suite, "A Day in the Life," Sgt.Pepper was a milestone for both '60s music and popular culture.--Billy Altman ... Editorial Review

Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn't rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like "On the Run," "Time" and especially "Money" (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably Pink Floyd's best-known work, and it's an excellent place to start if you're new to the band. --Genevieve Williams ... Read more

Sugar is the cure-all for your rock & roll blahs. The follow-up to 1997's platinum-selling Lemon Parade shows that the Los Angeles trio Tonic has taken a big step forward. Here they've forged a sound that's memorable and timeless, thanks to stellar songwriting matched by equally fine instrumentation and vocals. There's nary a bad song on this self-produced, self-assured 13-song collection. The more upbeat fare, including "Future Says Run," is open, catchy, and forceful. Ballads, such as "Waiting for the Light," are instantly appealing and beautiful without being sappy. Nearly all of Sugar's tunes have that hauntingly familiar feel. With the exception of "Jump Jimmy," which is redolent of the Tubes' "She's a Beauty," they're fresh, honest, buoyant, and gladdening. Here, at least, high doses of Sugar are beneficial to your psyche. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

These are the greatest hits of the version of Big Mac that produced Hits with a capital H! While pre-Stevie Nicks-Lindsey Buckingham versions of the group charted in the U.K. five times between 1968 and 1973, the post-blues-rock edition of the band reached unprecedented commercial heights beginning with "Rhiannon," a No. 5 smash in the spring of 1976. It's on this 16-track solid-gold set, along with the rest of the hits up through 1988's "Everywhere." A long version of "Sara" and some bonus tracks are included for extra value. --Steven Stolder ... The Best of The Doors delivers exactly what it promises. Rather than relying solely on the hits, this collection also mines the darker, and often richer, recesses of The Doors material resulting in a fairly representative statement. The hits are here: "Light My Fire" with Ray Manzarek's keyboards on a dizzy, psychedelic spree; "People Are Strange," with Morrison's tortured psyche barely being held in check; "L.A. Woman," with its bluesy sexuality. More important, favorites of fans are here, like the controversially (at the time) explicit "The End," which was one of the first of Morrison's forays into narrative poetry. In hits like "Break on Through," "Hello I Love You," "Roadhouse Blues," and others, The Doors melded psychedelia, blues, hard-edged rock, and poetry from the edge like no other band before. The Best of The Doors is a trip in every sense of the word. --Steve Gdula ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love These Guys
I met the Aquabats back in 1998 after a show and these guys (and gals) are class acts. They deserve far more than given but they're fine were they're at. Although ska died out pretty fast this album is beyond just ska. You have to understand their schtick to enjoy this album

5-0 out of 5 stars Ska At It's Best
OK OK, so you probably take one look at the cd cover of one of the aquabats cds and go LAME!! But my friend you are mistaken. The aquabats are far from lame, but closer to one of the greatest ska bands i have ever heard. the aquabats have an uncanny way of making u want to keep listening even though they sing about lame stuff. the horns are amazingly good, and everything about them kicks major ass. if you like ska you will absolutely love this album, which in my opinion is their best tho i own return of the aquabats and myths, legends, and other amazing adventures volume 2. go pick this up right now if you are a skankin fool. this is ska at its best! ... Pickin' Up the Pieces: The Best of Average White Band (1974-1980)

    Editorial Review

If they'd never cut another track after their monster-grooving, No. 1 R&B instrumental, "Pick Up the Pieces," the Average White Band still would have earned an enduring place in the music pantheon--and the Irony Hall of Fame, the latter due to their improbable Scottish roots. After all, they were six soul-smitten musical journeymen hailing from quarters much nearer the Mull of Kintyre than Motown.

But lest anyone mistake that quirk for a marketing shuck, the funk-drenched love of early '70s black music driving every cut on this well-chosen anthology will set matters straight. Indeed, AWB proves imitation isn't just the sincerest form of flattery. In the hands of seasoned and talented musicians, it can be the sweetest form of inspiration, too. The members' early work in cover bands informs songs like the sweaty workout "Cut the Cake" and tuneful, Marvin Gaye-inspired "Queen of My Soul" and "A Love of Your Own." This album is convincing argument that soul has little to do with the color of one's skin. --Jerry McCulley ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Would be perfect if....
The only thing wrong with this album is that it is missing "Twilight Zone" form the first album and "Nothing you can Do" from the second album. Otherwise, this album is flawless, frankly the best make out music of all time, as well as some of the best dance tracks ever laid down. These pioneers of Brithish "Northern Soul" have created many as evidenced here, timeless tracks that are just as good, just as danceable as they were 30 years ago. How many of the songs you liked back in the day would still sound fresh today as the great AWB ?

5-0 out of 5 stars A flawless retrospective!!! Rhino hits a homerun!!!
Bset Ofs are usually hit and miss, but this collection from Rhino is a definate hit, actually it's a homerun!!! 18 classic AWB classics all in a row!!! All their hits are here(Pick Up The Pieces,Person To Person,Work To Do,School Boy Crush,Cut The Cake and many more!!!)making this a top notch package!!! The remastered sound is incredible!!! Nice booklet too!!! A+

5-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful Loaning This One Out
I originally bought this CD a few years ago, back in '99.Loved it.I found myself yearning for the good old days again, when they actually made real music.Rarely do you find a greatest hits compilation that actually is packed full of hits. This CD does not disappoint. If the funky "School Boy Crush" doesn't bring back memories, the silky smooth "A Love of Your Own" or the straight jammin' "Queen of My Soul" will. There are so many more hits on this CD, it's a bonafide keeper. At least it was until my brother "borrowed" it (for 5 months).Every time I asked for it, he gave me another excuse about not being able to stop listening to it.Knowing how awesome this CD is, I just didn't have the heart to take it back, so I kicked out the dough for a new copy.Believe me when I say "It's worth it!"Long live '70's soul and funk! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the '90s
Sugar is one of the great records of the '90s, in fact its in my personal top ten. The rock songs are instantly catchy and the ballads have a quiet depth lyrically and musically. The overall quality of the songwriting is outstanding. Their previous album was uneven with some rock'n'roll highpoints, 'Sugar' is all quality. The followup to 'Sugar' is 'Head on Straight', while not quite as smooth as 'Sugar' it too is a worthy addition to any rock and roll record collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tonic deliver the goods again...
A alchemic blend of rock-anthems and melancholy musings, this album from trio Tonic is even better than Lemon Parade. This really is the thinking man's rock in a world quickly sinking beneath the nu-metal and hip-hop deluge. It's an eclectic sound...somewhere between Paul Simon and Live, with perhaps a dash of Crowded House. In equal turns both soothing and inspiring, this album is the latest in my collection from a Band that continues to grow and explore.

My personal favourite tracks are Knock Down Walls, which growls and drives with a 'still-humming-it-3-hours-later' chorus, Queen, which is both subtle, and rock-out fun, and Waltz With Me, a rythmic, gentle love song that is touching without getting slushy.

Yeah, I have favourites, but I love every song on this album...its one that I'll stick in my player and realise only when I come to switch it later that its already played through 3 times.More upbeat than Lemon-Parade, I'd highly recommend this to fans and new-comers alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great cd!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jones scores a winner
I saw the movie as part of a date with a fellow musician. We were late to the cineplex and missed the original movie we'd wanted to see, so we saw the Last of the Mohicans instead. It was a great movie (and an okay date), but it was the score the moved me most of all.

I was entranced through the whole thing. Loved Jones' parts of the score with the theme that ran through all the movements.I bought this on cassette, and in that medium all his parts were conveniently on one side.

I have an extensive music collection with both cassettes and CDs with very few items doubling between the two. This is one of the few that I have in multiple formats because I enjoyed it that much.

One of my favorite movements of all orchestral music of all time is "Top of the World."The music advisor I had at the time, a very prolific composer, had a snobbish attitude toward film scoring.I brought "Top of the World" for him to hear, and he actually admitted liking that one when he generally doesn't like film music.

My only complaint if I have one at all is that the Clannad song "I Will Find You" is too short on the soundtrack.I distinctly remember it being much longer in the film itself. That is the version I would rather hear than something that is over much too soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Original, unique and evocative
I enjoyed the Last of the Mohicans when I first saw the movie in Theatre. It is a powerful production; full of love, tragedy, and suspense.

A couple of years later, a friend loaned me the tape soundtrack. It was then that I realized the power of the film is entirely carried by the music. Each selection will evoke the emotion of that scene.A good soundtrack always recalls the movie and inspires the emotion. It is an understatement that Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman created a 'good' arrangement of music.

The unique factor for this soundtrack is that it stands on its own as a great collection of art.The arrangement of the sound tells a powerful story that can remain seperate from the film and maintain its' appeal.Everybody knows the soundtrack or at least has some familiarity with at least one selection from the CD.

I recommend this CD as a great improvement from the old audio tape, as an outstanding soundtrack and as a timeless collection of relaxing and passionate music.

5-0 out of 5 stars This music has a majesty all its own.
The soaring strains of this soundtrack have been lodged in my heart since I first listened to it when I viewed 'Last of the Mohicans' on its first run twenty-plus years ago.I think it's a work of great inspiration; heroic, majestic, lyrical and full of the pathos that is at the essence of the film. Whoever chose this composer knew what he was doing. The movie is lifted up, magnified and a perfect match for its subject: the great drama of savagery, honor and self-sacrificeon America's wild 18th century frontier. It is music that is full of beauty and bold purpose, as much great art as any symphony.I would (and have) watched the film simply to listen to the soundtrack.I cannot recommend it more highly. ... This is Bobby Darin at his finest!!! EXCELLENT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Could it be our boy's done something rash?
This is a solid collection of Bobby Darin's hits for Atco Records. It is by no means complete, though. The most notable ommisions are the #24 hit "What'd I Say" and the #40 hit "Nature Boy".But still, it's a good sampler of some of Bobby's best known songs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Skip this collection in favor of.......
I found the 3-CD box set"Rock & Roll Legends," in which Darin has his own disc, to be better than this collection.Featuring LIVE versions of "Splish Splash," "Plain Jane," "Dream Lover," and "Mack The Knife," it also replaces the less-arresting "Artificial Flowers" with the ecstatic rapidness of"I Wish I were In Love Again" and "Don't Rain On My Parade." Also, it has the same ratio of mono to stereo tracks as this disc. The other two CDs in the box set include live performances by Jerry Lee Lewis & Gene Vicent. The only thing "Ultimate Bobby Darin" has going for it is the inclusion of the uber-classic, "Beyond the Sea." ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sure Cetera, I'll forgive you. . .NOT!
After breaking the collective hearts of the soft rock-loving populace by leaving the powerhouse group Chicago, Traitor Cetera made a half-baked attempt to reconcile himself with his fanbase by recording this stinker. It's coincidental that the first track is titled "Big Mistake", as if Traitor knew his leaving one of the premier groups of our time was the worst decision he would ever make.I bought this album way back in 1986 with some birthday money, and after I had listened to the album once, I made myself go and apologize to all of my family members for wasting their money so foolishly.

What else is here?Oh, you have the "Karate Kid II" ballad "Glory of Love", a tune so nauseating it's made me completely ignore the second film in the canon, and go straight from the original "Karate Kid" to "III" and "Next" whenever I do my yearly film marathon.I just pretend the second film never existed. It also has the semi-smash "Next Time I Fall", where Traitor makes it a point to hog the spotlight completely from guest vocalist Amy Grant.

In short, if you a) thought Cetera's leaving Chicago was a great decision, or b) like your music pointless and nauseating, by all means get this album. If you want music with real heart and soul, just go buy some Chicago. You'll be glad you did.

im actually taking the time not really to write a view but let it be known that this is NOT Cetera's solo debut i have seen quite a few reviews on here that say it is but i guess they dont remember his 1981 self titled(which i actually own on vinyl) and i bought about a month ago for a buck really was worth it i must say just figured i'd point that out to the not so loyal PC fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boy am I going to be unpopular?
Leaving Chicago behind him, Peter released this album to kick of his solo career, (perhaps he should be a footballer then. Sorry, that was an awful joke.) to some success. I will try and be fair in the review that follows however my personel opinion is undoubtibly going to creep in.
Now, first of all I shall say that this deserves 3 stars, no more no less. This is because, firstly it is a very dated album. It is the definition of eighties pop. However that is not to say it is bad, just very uncool. Musically it is actually quite good, not up to Chicago's declining standerds, but still decent. It is the sort of album you put on when you've listened to all your other albums and got bored of them. And upon listening to it you think 'Oh, it's better than I gave it credit for.' In my opinion, it is perfecly decent and worth getting but it will not be one of those great albums. Of course, many of you reading this have looked at this album because you love it, a few because you want to buy it, and another few because you hate it. So, for those of you who want to hear the album being praised, go to a 5 star review, for the few looking for advice on buying it, look at any review (preferably continueing mine) and for those of you who came here to hate it... It's an awful album, I can't believe it was ever released, and as for Peter... Happy now you haters? Anyway, in conclusion, if you like latter Chicago get this, if you like other Cetera works get this, and if you like eighties pop get this.
I hope I've steered you right.
Thank you, and goodnight/day/morning/evening... ... Read more

    Editorial Review

5-0 out of 5 stars ROCKIN OUT!
This CD was and is still amazing.I've been listening to it everyday for almost a year now, and none of the songs have grown old! My personal favorites are "Tusk", "Say That You Love Me", "Gypsy", "Go Your Own Way", "Don't Stop", and "Hold Me"; although there isn't a song on this collection I won't listen too. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREATEST GREATEST GREATEST HITS!!!!!!!
Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits has all of the Mac's best and greatest hits like you can't argue about Rhiannon, Dreams, and Gypsy by Stevie Nicks. Don't Stop, You Make Loving Fun, and Say You Love Me by Christine McVie. Tusk, Go Your Own Way, and Big Love by Lindsey Buckingham. Plus the new songs As Long As You Follow and No Questions Asked are all of my faves which are ALL included on this GREAT set.So this is a great set to carry with you in your car or portable cd player because it's 1 cd with LOTS of good hits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This One, FLEETWOOD MAC (1975), and RUMOURS First
GREATEST HITS, along with FLEETWOOD MAC (1975) and RUMOURS, is one of the first Fleetwood Mac CDs/cassettes to buy. In addition to the classics from those two, it also contains gems fvrom TUSK, MIRAGE, and TANGO IN THE NIGHT, plus two new songs featuring Buckingham's replacements, Billy Burnette and Rick Vito. This is a wonderful album that should be picked up at the same time as the mid-70s classics. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Read more
