5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, Loud, and Hard. What more could you ask for?
This is a great CD of classic punk for those who were there, or those who want to know. What's not to like about this? The songs are undeniable classics of American punk.If you don't like this CD, then you aredefinitely looking in the wrong genre. It delivers the goods; fast, loud, hardcore punk. The enegery is pure, strong, and may even have you end upslamming your head against the wall in a brutal, frenzied effort to channelthe pure speed and force of Mission of Burma.

1-0 out of 5 stars album is terrible dont get it
This album is not worth your money.Do not get it...it suck

5-0 out of 5 stars almost essential...worth P.O.A. for Dicks, Bad Brains, MDC
Seriously, wanna here unbrideled passion, the likes of which has yet to be rivaled in any musical statement before or after? Listen to the Dicks Hate the Police, and feel the chills up your spine (whether you agree with theirmessage or not). MDC plays the classic John Wayne Was a Nazi, and by God,you'll believe em!! Pay To Cum by the Bad Brains is still the best thingthey've done, and the original "fastest song ever". Buy this! (oracquire it somehow!) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!
Okay, if you're a fan of punk and new wave, you've probably got at least 6or 7 of the 19 songs here scattered around your collection already, onBlondie, Ramones, and Television records. But if you're like me and havenever heard the Dictators, the Heartbreakers, and several of the otherless-famous bands here, you're in for a treat. And Patti Smith, who neverappealed to me much, comes across well in the context of like-minded bands.

If you know nothing about the mid-seventies NYC scene, then you owe itto yourself to check this out, especially if you're a fan of more recentstyles of punk. Along with the Velvet Underground and the Stooges, the NewYork bands were touchstones for everything else that followed. Other DIYvolumes are out of print, by the way, so you might want to grab this onewhile you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant
The score card: 13 songs, 10 groups, 5 chords, 0 notes on key.But it's hard to imagine anything more visceral, fun, and rebellious. The thing you get most here is the humour: "Born to Lose" and "Sheena is aPunk Rocker" are good examples. Some say the English dropped the bombthat shook up rock and roll, but I believe the Ramones and Television(being one of the prime movers of U2) are every bit as important.Afterall, it was the American record scene that was most bloated, and hence mostneeded the kick.Sure, there are omissions (Talking Heads?) but theremaining give a pretty fair assessment of New York Punk."BlankGeneration" indeed! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious Total Rock Cacophony
One word describes this album: raucous, and unrelentingly so at that. It's an absolute gem. Imagine equal parts Sex Pistols, Hanoi Rocks, Motorhead, Guns 'n' Roses, and Social Distortion (singer/guitarist Nicke Borg is a dead ringer vocally for Mike Ness) and you're nearly there. But BYB go further still, and they're hands down the best pure punk 'n' roll band on the planet right now.

Every song on here is great, but for me "Subculture Hero" is the pick of the bunch -- killer main riff and a powerchord chorus to die for. These guys have all the looks, hooks, chops, and songwriting suss you could ever ask for. This is an essential album for any rocker's collection. I can't wait to see 'em live.

5-0 out of 5 stars BACKYARD BABIES #1 ROCK BAND ON EARTH RIGHT NOW!
Before you read my review get off your computer and get this CD anywhere, by any means necessary. Your musical life depends on it! You can thank me later.

Now that you have it in your hot little hands, i'll get down to business. This CD should be a part of any true rocker-metalhead-punk-glam-sleazy-rock-n-roll-music lover's collection in the same way having The Ramones, Guns N Roses, KISS, Hanoi Rocks, AC DC, Misfits, Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, and Thin Lizzy are essential in your library. These guys are the BEST band on the planet Earth right now. They embody so many elements of all those bands. BIG Monsterous Guitar Hooks, catchy melodies, and songs that drip sleaze.

This album is absolutley on my Top 20 albums of all time. There isn't one crappy, mediocre, filler song here. Each one is a gem. A classic. Everytime I listen to it a different song becomes my favorite. When i first got hold of it I would tell anyone who would listen to me about the BACKYARD BABIES and this album. I was like a person who just found the Lord, praising his gloriousness. all hail the BACKYARD BABIES!!

This is the kind of album that as you are listening to it you can't wait to hear it again. You will turn this CD on LOUD, grab a guitar, a tennis racket, or even a broom handle, and rock out in your bedroom like a madman.

I can't tell you how much I love this band and this CD. When, not IF you buy this you will not be disapointed. You will become instant fans of this band and seek everything they've ever done. [...]

    BACKYARD BABIES FOREVER!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Day Social D........
To say the Backyard Babies third album Total 13 is Excellent would be an understatement, these Sweedish rockers Kick Butt!Nicke's gritty vocals, Dregens heavy guitarlicks and well writen lyrics are the evoy of any punkor hard rock band. Their cover of Faster Pussycats "Babylon"makes the original sound more like a Sinatra song. Look for the BackyardBabies to be EXPLODING onto the US charts with their next release.

A must-buy for any teen or twentysomething who considers themselves the least bit cool. With Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore swopping leads, it's a beautifully paced disc exploding with beatific beats, white-noise assaults and great, grungy pop ("Sugar Kane," "Chapel Hill"). --Jeff Bateman ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Average Sonic Youth
This is one of Sonic Youth's most approachable CDs. Maybe that's why I'm only giving it 3 stars.

It's good. "100%", "Purr", "Drunken Butterfly" are all great tracks. "Swimsuit Issue" showcases Kim Gordon at her best, most ironic and sarcastic.

Everything else is just average to me. Sonic Youth is a great band, I like just about everything they do. But "Dirty" just didn't leave much an impression.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is perfectly flawed.
Don't just listen to this and put it down saying it's crap. You have to grow on it. Like apprectiating good art. You'll probably notice "Drunken Butterfly" first, because of it's name. It's a good song, The random trashy guitar "solos" sort of ruin it, it's really the verses and chorus that are good. Although these american teenagers use minimalist words and simple rhyming schemes in their lyrics, it's almost poetic, the themes make it so. My favourite song is "Theresa's Sound World.", It's not quite as full on as most of their songs, bt it's beautiful. i also enjoyed (along with Drunken Butterfly) "100%", "Swimsuit Issue", "Purr" and "Chappel Hill."

5-0 out of 5 stars genius mixture of Sonic Youth's styles: their White Album
And EASILY THE BEST ONE FOR INITIATES!!!!

Sonic Youth, along with the Pixies, were one of the formative influences on everyone's faves- wunderkind- Nirvana. They were both touring together around the time this was coming out. Wow. SY even borrowed the producer (a little history: Butch Vig produced most of the sound-sculpted seminally influencial ((like it or not)) albums of the early 90's- he was the co-inventor of the Kevin Shields Sound"- that furious wall of distortion you hear on Nevermind, Siamese Dream, Loveless...) for this classic.

This was their 2nd release for DGC, and boy did they take advantage of that. You can hear the advancement of production values. Now- whether you want to hear sound qulaity on an SY album is totally up for debate. Whether you think that their brand of noise-rock should go for accessibility is also a debatable argument. I stand by this release, all of it a gorgeous, furious, precision-tuned masterpiece. I remember being 13, hearing 100% and thinking- I want an album that sounds like THAT- THE WHOLE THING!!! Lurchingly sanguine and Demented fuzzed out bassline and two gnomic guitars just wailing- keening with scraps of noise, fire, a maelstrom of sonic brutality pouring out of the desperate amps... Wow. That one track (which concerns the death of their friend, Joe Cole (see Hank Rollins book, "Now watch Him Die," his best easily) makes thIs worth picking up.

You may be bewildered by their approach- but what sounds like utter hell is truly a very finely crafted sculpture of sound. One that they are able to reproduce with fairly meticulous and faithful renderings- live. Each song sounds utterly different, conjures a variety of images and scenes for the mind's perusal. No sleeper tracks, save for the cover of 'Nic Fit,' which is les than 2 minutes long anyway...

(I wonder why this magic kinda subsided on subsequent releases like "Washing Machine" and "Jet set, Trash... their more recent releases also seem- not as magical. meybe it was just me- maybe it was the time. Who knows.)

The brooding, sumptuous tempest that is JC- another ineluctable reason to pick this up. You can't hate that song. It is one of the most amazing pieces i have ever heard and totally stands on its own. In it- all the random noise comes together into a whirring buzzsaw of delectable hell while Kim meanders, pensively, a beautiful tale that is completely impressionistic and always makes me feel swamped with loss...

All tracks winners. each and every one. These songs seem like children to me. Never grow up. I put this on and sink back into my headphones and BOOM! It's 1992 again and I'm 13 and pining for my best friend, hating her boyfriend, reading Salvatore's Dark Elf trilogy, messing around with a guitar (thought I invented the e minor chord), up late at night writing bad psuedo Bryonic poetry... this Cd brings back to me the SMELL of my old room. How many Cds can do that? Invoke palpably the sense of your past?

Enough. Just get it. It will not disappoint. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If it weren't for Alice Cooper's onstage antics, Kiss, Marilyn Manson and Glen Danzig might have evolved into summery pop artists suitable for family picnics. Yet as Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits record attests, the grandfather of shock rock brought much more to the rock arena than boa constrictors and simulated decapitations. In addition to classic hard rock anthems like "I'm Eighteen," "No More Mr. Nice Guy," and "School's Out," Cooper unleashed rollicking barroom rockers like "Under My Wheels" and tugged at the heartstrings with cuts like "Desperado" and "Hello Hooray." In retrospect, his songs have more in common with the Who and the Faces than with Black Sabbath or Judas Priest. But his songs were filled with soaring choruses and grandiose horn embellishes that proved he could be larger than life both on and off the stage. --Jon Wiederhorn ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper - 'Greatest Hits' (Warner Brothers)
Wish I had a nickel for every time I've seen this release in a record store.A good, worthy and well assembled disc of Alice Cooper's twelve best tunes from his golden years,1971-74.That's not to say that all of his later efforts are crap, because many of them are really quite decent.I've heard the guitar on this CD's cut of "Under My Wheels" is a bit different than the original lp version. The anthems are here, like "Eighteen","School's Out","Elected" and "Teenage Lament '74".Of course, many of us remember his tribute to Jim Morrison,"Desperado".Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview to the man and band called Alice
Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits was originally released in August of 1974 as a contract obligator to Warner Bros and as fate has it the last album from the original Alice Cooper band.
This was my first Alice Cooper record (Alice Cooper the original band and on his own) that I got on cassette in August of 1989 after I failed to find Billion Dollar Babies.
Whilst it's not everything you want from the original Alice Cooper Band, Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits brings together almost all of the group's best songs and biggest hits from 1971's Love it to Death to 1974's Muscle of Love.
Thirty years later, Greatest Hits expanded and changed into the more recent career-spanning Alice Cooper/Vince Furnier-compilation 2001's Mascara And Monsters but this 12-track album remains the finest introduction to the original Alice Cooper group.
The album contains the original band's hit singles I'm Eighteen, Under My Wheels, Be My Lover, School's Out, Elected, Hello Hooray, No More Mr Nice Guy, Billion Dollar Babies, Teenage Lament '74 and Muscle of Love.
Also, it featues two album cuts with Is It My Body from 1971's Love It To Death and Desperado from 1971's Killer.
If you don't know where to begin with The Alice Cooper Band then this and the recent best of are good choices but if you want to go all out, buy Killer and Billion Dollar Babies first.

5-0 out of 5 stars alice cooper's greatest hits 71-74
In 1974 Alice Cooper broke up "Alice Cooper" the band, and went solo the following year. 1974's Greatest Hits covers all of the big radio hits of the Alice Cooper band.12 songs from the five albums that they released between 1971 and 1974.All of the hits that you know as well as a couple of key album tracks.Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits is a great introduction to the music of Alice Cooper. ... Editorial Review

It's the rare greatest-hits album that takes on a life of its own. Generally, best-of collections are superceded by updated retrospectives. Hot Rocks is one of the rare exceptions to the rule. Originally released in 1972, it instantly became the Stones intro of choice, elbowing aside Big Hits, High Tide and Green Grass and Through the Past Darkly. Why? It happened to hit the racks when Mick and company were at their creative peak. The 21 tracks found here represent seven years of dizzying growth. From "Time is on My Side" through "Satisfaction" and "Let's Spend the Night Together," on to Sticky Fingers's "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses," Hot Rocks never lets up. The likes of Sucking in the '70s and Jump Back come and go, but this Stones overview will not be moved. --Steven Stolder ... Read more

    Editorial Review

In 2000 Oasis wisely dispensed with theatrics and concentrated on being the world's greatest stadium-sized pub-rock band. And so, with just three mammoth video walls in tow, they toured the world. Big as the video screens were, however, the band's straight-ahead rock and Liam Gallagher's mouth were even bigger, and contributed much to the drama, tension, and entertainment of the tour behind Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. Fine examples of both were recorded when they played Wembley Stadium. Musically, Oasis make good on their claims to be the biggest and the best with rocking versions of "Supersonic," "Shakermaker," "Cigarettes & Alcohol," and "Live Forever." As for Liam, Familiar to Millions wouldn't be half the album it is had his inane ramblings, brotherly abuse, and audience taunts been edited out. That's where the real live atmosphere lies--there and in the sound of 70,000 fans singing the choruses of "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back in Anger." --Dan Gennoe ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good live album.
Taken from the standing on the shoulder of giants tour at Wembley 2000.
Its a very loud and rocky performance, and theres no acoustic guitars used, even wonderwall is done on an electric.
Theres also some great covers of Neil youngs "hey hey mymy " by Noel gallygally and "Helter Skelter"
Laims voice is quite rough and raspy which adds a nice "real" and "rock n roll" sound to all the songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like at the concert
This double album set was amazing. The sound quality was great but it still felt as if you were rockin along right with them live at the concert!Awesome music at real good price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not recorded at their peak
This album comes through positively in several ways.Personally, I love albums that have the audiences high in the mix and I don't think you can get it any more present than on this album.Secondly, the band and Liam's voice also comes through quite well and it's an enjoyable recording. However, the bad part is that it wasn't recorded at their peak.Recorded on their Standing on the Shoulder of Giants tour, the energywasn't the same as between 1994-1996 and the cuts from that album brought the energy of the show down and couldn't be more boring.By this time, more than half the band were gone and the last two albums the band had released were weak without any decent singles besides Go Let it Out.I find Live By the Sea on DVD to be a much better indicator of what Oasis was when they had something to prove, or even There and Then on DVD.This album had all the top singles but it was almost 5 years after this was recorded and many performances just feel tired.I do like the album, but it could have been a lot better, Oasis just lost it right after Be Here Now and by that time they were millionaires and just didn't succeed as in the beginning when they had to fight to become stars. ... Editorial Review

Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Cliff's Notes take on a remarkable seven-year run of musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of R&B, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country, and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. This is the pop monument equivalent of the '27 Yankees and '90s Bulls; it's every bit as obvious and dominating--and just as essential. --Jerry McCulley ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honestly, Was This Collection Really Necessary?
Before I start, I would like to state the only reason I am giving this cd a five star rating is that it's because it is quite possibly the finest rock and pop music ever written. However, if I were to judge this cd on quauntity rather than quality, this would be a one star cd.

"The Beatles 1" is a collection of all 20 of their American singles as well as seven that went to number one in Britain. While it's no lie that these songs are classics, but really, exactly how many times does this stuff have to be rereleased before everyone is tired of The Beatles?

The burning question is, why don't The Beatles have their own boxed set? I mean, seriously, they are the most important band that ever existed, and yet they haven't gottent their own seven or even eight disc best of with all their hits and the classics that weren't. That's a sin. It would probably take years to put together, but for The Beatles, it would be worth it.

My advice is to only purchase "The Beatles 1" is if you're a beginning fan. Other than that, this cd is not necessary in the least. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From Swedish Detroit Rock to Swedish Southern Boogie
Before getting this album, the only Hellacopters disc I was familiar with was *Payin' the Dues*, which was a raging slab a metal/punk with an unmistakable groove that rocked out to a ridiculous extent. In contrast, I can hardly believe that *High Visibility* is even by the same band! Here the 'Copters have traded in the head-bashing Stooges/MC5-based heavy rock of their previous albums with a much more musicianly sound that is closer to the southern rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, or Molly Hatchet (but in a heavier fashion than those bands). This may be due to the band's changing line-up. Former lead guitarist Dregen, now back with his fulltime band Backyard Babies, was a frantic punk with a barrage of piledriving metal/punk riffage. His replacement, Robert Dahlqvist, in contrast is a laidback blues/boogie virtuoso. Bobby Fett, previously an occasional guest star but now a fulltime member, also makes a big difference with his blues-based piano and organ work. But the major story is the growing skills of leader Nicke Andersson (a.k.a. Nick Royale), who is an extremely gifted songwriter, and a Swede who is clearly interested in the entire history of rock n' roll.

Having previously tackled the entire Detroit sound with the punk and metal focus of the previous albums, here Nicke has gone down to the American South, which gives his band much more of a groove and has increased their musical chops to epic levels. Even this album's photography looks like it's influenced by 70's American working-class rock. Also, Nicke is no longer screaming at the top of his lungs but is now actually singing like an American troubadour, and he's doing it well too. On some of this album's heaviest rockers, like "Truckloads of Nothin'," "A Heart Without Home," or "Envious," if you imagine them being played with trashier guitar licks and more screaming, they might just sound more like the old 'Copters. But the biggest surprises here are this band's first ever mid-tempo, easygoing semi-ballads, especially the majestic "No Song Unheard" which could even be mistaken for a rockin' Billy Joel or Neil Young. The Hellacopters sure have many different influences, and who knows which styles they'll incorporate into their diverse vision next. But as always, everything the Hellacopters do, they do very well indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't like this, you have severe problems.
I can't think of anything much to write about this album, so all I will say is that this is the best straight up rock album I have heard in the last five years, maybe more.I can't stop listening to it.

PS - Just want to make a correction to the title of my review, it should read:If you don't LOVE this, you have severe problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's true:Rock And Roll Will Never Die!!!
Things sure have changed in the Hellacopter camp in the years after their phenomenal debut in 1994.It's pretty much universally agreed upon that the turning point was "Grande Rock", when Nick and company started dropping the "garage-punk" feel of being generally underproduced studio-wise.But let's be realistic, part of the magic of the debut was the raw urgency that they portrayed in those short, noisy blasts of brilliance. So, even though it took a few years, they have turned a full 180 with "High Visibility" - their most produced and professional album to date.In fact, this hardly sounds like the same band that they once were. But before I keep making comparisons to give you the impression that this isn't worth your time, let me say this:despite the differences between "then and now" over the course of their extremely inspired and prolific career, "High Visibility" is still an awesome album in its own right.
Continuing Nick's mission of channeling the vibes of the 1970's into what could be appropriately called "High Energy Rock", this record is full of rock music that's better than any classic rock I've ever heard. They've moved on from the buzzsaw power chords of the MC5, The Stooges, and the Dead Boys; instead, think of The Who, Lynyrd Skykyrd, the Rolling Stones, even more KISS, and so on and so forth, mixed in with the aforementioned early proto-punk godfathers.Get the picture? And considering the slightly altered direction they've taken, Nick sure does seem to have a more appropriate singing voice than the throat-scratch wailing of Dregen... even though that was so perfectly suited on their early releases.
Something else of a strange twist is the fact that "High Visibility" is the first Hellacopters album on a major label - and judging by its success in their native Sweden, it won't be their last, either. But before you scream "sell-out" from atop your soapbox, just keep in mind that the entire album was written and recorded prior to their knowledge of even being asked to be on a major. There's no loss of drive and hunger from these Rock Gods gone big league. While most bands would suffer from changing their sound and moving onto bigger avenues of success, these `copters are still just as driven to play flat-out no nonsense Rock-n-Roll.Thankfully, this is still a band fiercely dedicated to what they do and how they do it - no compromise, no matter how big they've gotten. On top of that, these boys are still as down to earth and as far from pretentious as you can get.For once it's cool to have a group worthy of being "Rock Gods" while not having the all-too-nauseating "Rock God Ego Syndrome".
No less than three songs were released from this album as singles in their homeland, and all three were good enough to deserve being thrust into the charts there. The first two singles, "Hopeless Case Of A Kid In Denial" and "Toys And Flavours" are catchy, wailing rock-n-roll numbers that are EASILY two of the best tracks that the band has ever pinned. What many have come to many fans as a complete shocker - or perhaps we all knew it was coming? - was the inclusion of a ballad, "No Song Unheard", also released as a single. In fact, "No One's Gonna Do It For You" carries the same sort of mellow vibe, so there are definitely signs that the boys are moving into dynamic territory. No matter though - The Hellacopters write ballads just like they write everything else - oozing with infectious and vital Rock (capital R included, buddy - and don't you forget it), ready to be considered classic right from the get-go.
The world needs more Rock bands like the Hellacopters, quite honestly.I know that there's a ton of decent rock-n-roll to be found when you look toward the underground circuit, but The Hellacopters aren't ashamed to get huge doing it. "High Visibility" was yet another excellent record proving that Rock will always have a vital place in the world, and that the old adage is proven true - Rock-N-Roll Will Never Die. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Double Platinum by KISS.
This was my very first KISS album ever. And I gotta admit, this has got to be the best C.D. from KISS for someone that doesn't know what they are made of, because you will be able to see some of their succesful hits. But after you buy more albums this one get dull and boring.

The thing is that if you have more than five KISS albums, this means almost nothin', really. So if you are no longer a rookie by knowing what KISS is this album is NOT for you. For example I know KISS since I was five, that mean I know them for 'bout eight freakin' years, now and I gotta say this album is almost a "nothing".

5-0 out of 5 stars KISS' most famous compilation album
In April of 1978 KISS released the compilation album Double Platinum.
The band believe it or not had very little actually to do with it. The album was the idea of Casablanca Records head Neil Bogart whom wanted to celebrate the band's fifth anniversary and release an album of highlights from their first six albums with many of the songs being "remixed".
Cases in point: the combination of the acoustic guitar intro to Rock Bottom going into She. Also, Hard Luck Woman, Calling Dr love, Firehouse, Deuce, 100000 Years, Detroit Rock City and Black Diamond are different than their versions on the original albums in their remixed state. However Do You Love Me, Let Me Go Rock and Roll, Love Gun, God of Thunder, Hotter Than Hell, I Want You, Rock and Roll All Nite, Beth, Makin' Love, C'mon and Love Me and Cold Gin are their original versions as they were recrded. The band was also asked to re-record the track Strutter for the album in a disco style, and the result was Strutter '78.
Whilst this project was put together, things were not well with the band. Peter Criss and Ace Frehley both thought of resigning from the band. In an unprecedented move, the decision was made that the band would temporarily "disband" so that each member could record a solo album under the Kiss banner and all four would be released simultaneously. The idea worked with Criss and Frehley and it kept them in the band for the time being until 1980 and 1982 respectively.
Also in 1978, the band also made the infamous TV movie "Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park", which coincided with the release of the solo albums that fall. Double Platinum went Platinum right away and hit the US Top 20 and has gone on to be the KISS best of one has in their record collection.
    Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Double Platinum = Triple Platinum Success
Great early hits compilation but the Japanese version of "Greatest KISS" is better IMO. Anyway, I do love this CD and the remixes are very good, especially "Calling Dr. Love" it BLOWS the original version AWAY!!!!

"Strutter '78" is cool but I still prefer the original.

"Hard Luck Woman" cool but still gotta go with the original.

"Firehouse" faster than the original but lacks the sirens at the end.

"Deuce" slower than the original but definitely better! Paul's "DO IT!" makes the song for me.

"Detroit Rock City" shorter version but does have an extra verse "You Gotta Lose Your Life in Detriot Rock City"

"She" better than the original with a longer outro.

"Black Diamond" longer intro but shorter outro, I like either version.

I still say check out the Japanese version of "Greatest KISS" if you want the best KISS compilation out there. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Jailbreak is surely Thin Lizzy's most exciting, tough, and touching album. Simultaneously barbarous and balletic, the 1976 set boasts the totally irresistible "The Boys Are Back in Town." But the rest of Jailbreak lives up to that highlight, especially the riotous title track ("Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak, somewhere in this town"--yeah well, the jail seems a likely place). If Phil Lynott's poetic pretensions sometimes get the better of things, most of the album shows off his effortless power and economy; if heavy rock has a tendency to wrestle each song to the ground, Lynott and company were uniquely capable of delivering the knockout punch, graceful as a boxer or bullfighter. Jailbreak is testament to such skills. --Taylor Parkes ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars just classic
this album has some of my favorite solos and riffs. it's just an amazing listening experience. great lyrics as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only commercially known release from music's best*
Hopefully, you will see my name in the future sometime either in my field of study(Medical) or as just being maybe Thin Lizzy's #1 fan. Most would credit those such as Elvis(obvious) , the Stones, Beatles, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, & Van Halen as being the best of all time. They may have been great, but I have news for the world in 2005! I, myself, obtained my first copy of Jailbreak at age 25(2001) & while I was brainwashed most of my life by just commercially known outfits, I was born again and saw the light with Thin Lizzy and the late(1/4/86), greatest Phil Lynott. We all know "The Boys Are Back In Town, but this is just the beginning. While Downey, Gorham, & Robertson fit the mold of the long haired, blonde stereotyped looking rock star, those of us who were born of a different ethinic background but raised in the US, or UK-Ireland at that, finally have, or have always had, an Irish-Brazilian dark & curly haired legend(Black Rose) to look up too. How ironic after all this time that this one was the best all this time*

5-0 out of 5 stars Jailbreak
Most people, and I'm included, start their trek through Thin Lizzy territory with their 1976 album "Jailbreak."There's a very good reason for this, since anyone that listens to classic rock radio should be familiar with at least three of the songs on this album - "The Boys are Back In Town," "The Cowboy Song," and the title track. For those of you starting out like I did, let me just say that you can't go wrong with this record.

"Jailbreak" shows off Thin Lizzy's considerable talent and variety, thanks in part to the great drumming of Brian Downey, their trademark dual-guitar harmonies supplied by the stable of excellent guitarists throughout Thin Lizzy history (on this album, Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson handle the six strings), and, of course, Phil Lynott's masterful bass playing and soulful vocals (the latter are especially heard on "Fight or Fall").The album drifts between "slow dance with your girl" type of songs ("Romeo and the Lonely Girl," "Fight or Fall") and out-and-out rockers ("Jailbreak," and my favorite song on the album "The Emerald").

The best part is, once you've really gotten into "Jailbreak," there are a bunch of other Thin Lizzy records out there.Do yourself a favor and pick up the live album, too, since it's easily one of the five best live rock records. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Where the Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker had a more restrained, accomplished rock sound, Florida's Lynyrd Skynyrd took another approach, evoking images of whiskey, Confederate flags, hard luck, and greasy dive bars in their music. The like-minded Molly Hatchet and .38 Special couldn't come close to matching the lyrical talent and natural-born rock-and-boogie abilities of Skynyrd. And, of course, no other band can lay claim to the most-requested song in the history of rock music, the anthemic "Free Bird," the focal point of this, their 1973 debut. Aside from spawning countless tomes of bad poetry by pockmarked 15-year-olds everywhere with "Free Bird," they demonstrated a mastery of the rock ballad with the time-tested "Tuesday's Gone," another highlight of this notable first offering. --Lorry Fleming ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a southern rock masterpiece
pronouned lehnerd skinerd is the greatest rock album ever.i would rate this fantastic album even higher than any album from legends like led zeppelin, pink floyd or the who.very little needs to be written about the greatness of an album which contains classic songs like GIMME THREE STEPS,TUESDAY'S GONE,SIMPLE MAN and the greatest rock epic FREE BIRD.very very highly recommended along with SECOND HELPING,STREET SURVIVORS,ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD and SKYNYRD'S FIRST AND LAST.FIVE STARS.please ignore the one star reviewer on this page who needs to be reported for being inappropriate.SKYNYRD RULES!!!!!!!!!.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong Effort
For the casual Skynyrd fan, this is the CD to own. With familiar hits in Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Freebird...you cannot go wrong. This great re-issue includes lyrics along with not-so famous songs (Mississippi Kid and Poison Whiskey). Only 8 tracks, but the emotion these great songs exude is worth every cent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Southern rock doesn't get any better!
    Prounounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd (1973.) Lynyrd Skynyrd's first album.

In 1972, a rock band from Jacksonville, Florida came onto the ever-growing southern rock scene based in Atlanta, Georgia. This band had a highly irregular name, but great musical potential. This group, consisting of Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Ed King (formerly of Strawberry Alarm Clock), Billy Powell, Robert Burns, and Leon Wilkeson, recorded their debut album in 1973. Would this little band's debut album be a southern rock masterpiece that went down in history, or would it be "just another rock album?" Read on for my review of Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1973 debut album, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd.

Three of Lynyrd Skynyrd's biggest and best hits came from this album. They are the lengthy and melodic rock masterpiece Tuesday's Gone, the southern rock classic Gimme Three Steps (my personal favorite hit the band ever had), and of course, the legendary Free Bird (an interesting note - Free Bird is the song that guitarist Steve Clark played to earn his slot in Def Leppard!) The record company wanted the band to shorten Free Bird to three minutes, the standard record company single running length, but they refused. Because of the length, the record company thought it wouldn't get any airplay. I bet they fill stupid now, since it's become one of the band's biggest hits! But, as with any rock band, with Lynyrd Skynyrd there are many excellent songs that were never very big hits. The opening track, I Ain't The One, is bluesy hard rock at its very best. They probably could not have started the album off better. Simple Man is a slower track, but it rocks just as much as anything else on the album. Don't skip it! Things Go On is classic bluesy rock at its best, and in my mind, serves as a premonition to the band's later successes (there's definitely a resemblance to Call Me The Breeze, one of the band's later hits.) Mississippi Kid is by far the most country-sounding thing on the album, but it's still a good track. And, of course, with Poison Whiskey the band gives us another classic hard rocker that's tough to beat. It's no wonder so many fans consider this album a classic.

This reissued/remastered/revamped version of the album does more than just clean up the sound and make the album more readily available to fans - It also throws on some rare bonus tracks! One of them is Mr. Banker, a demo which was the B-Side to the Gimme Three Steps single. This track is the perfect fusion of country and southern rock, though the style rather obviously leans toward the latter. The B-Side to the Free Bird single, a little demo called Down South Jukin', can also be found here as a bonus cut. This is excellent classic southern rock, and it's a shame this track has gone forgotten for so many years! I'm very pleased that these songs finally made it to the compact disc format! But it doesn't stop there! We also get three previously unreleased demos of the Skynyrd classics Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, and Free Bird. These demos lack the expertise of the "finished" versions of the songs, but they are still well worth listening to if you're a fan of the band, since some parts of the tracks (particularly the extended outro of the Free Bird demo) differ substantially from the final versions. This would be a five star album, even without the bonus tracks, but with bonus tracks, it's worth much more than that - If I could rate this album higher than that, I would.

Overall, Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album is pure southern rock excellence. And the bonus tracks are the icing on the cake. Many reviewers have compared this album to Led Zeppelin, and although the two bands differ a good deal, many of these comparisons are accurate (listen to Led Zeppelin's debut and then listen to this, and you'll see what I mean - there's definitely somewhat of a resemblance.) If you like classic rock, this album is a masterpiece that your collection should not be without! ... Read more

A more affordable alternative to the three-CD Essential package, The Man in Black is a well-chosen, double-disc collection that includes a good number of Cash's highlights, but leaves behind the accoutrements of the box set (no liner notes, discographical info, and so on). On the other hand, it includes various cuts--duets with Dylan, Kristofferson, and the Highwaymen for example--that Essential leaves off, although Essential does a more-thorough job of sampling the Sun years and the prison records. As a summary of Cash's many frames of mind, this compilation is not a bad place to start at all. --Marc Greilsamer ... Read more

A glimpse of the future, and not because of its huge influence and umpteen million sales. The poor-little-rich-boy protest "Out ta Get Me" intimates that Axl Rose's egotism and martyr complex were soon to grow bigger than his head; still, Appetite's night-train wreck of punk and metal sounds and sensibilities make it more than just an emblem of its time. Whether GN'R are dancing with Mr. Brownstone, penning a callow kiss-off letter to some chick named Michelle, or passing out on somebody else's sofa, this was and remains a savage journey to the heart of the American--or at least the Hollywood--dream. --Rickey Wright ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best By Guns N' Roses
In my opinion, this is maybe the best GNR cd since the compilation came out in 2004! Other albums by GNR are terrible except for Use Your Illusion 2. I love Use Your Illusion I for
my favorite song of all time, November Rain. There are a few weak songs on this CD. The weakest songs on this would be My Michelle, You're Crazy, and Anything Goes. Maybe it is a must have for any rock fan!

Welcome to the Jungle - I think this is the greatest album opener
in years of rock and roll! One of GNR's big classic radio rock
    songs.

It's So Easy - Kinda cool song for most GNR fans. I aint a huge
fan to this song but that's ok.

Nightrain - I don't like this as much! The lyrics are very boring and the end is mostly the worst. But I love the opening.

Out ta Get Me - This maybe one of the worst songs GNR ever wrote.

Mr. Brownstone - I love this song! This song has some great
riffs and great vocals done! One of my favorite songs on this
    album.

Paradise City - A gnr classic! I love this song! It is one of my
    favorites.

My Michelle - Ouch! Ugly, mean, dull, and sort of Back in Black
sort of album. If Brian Johnson were here, I would kill him! I hate this ugly dull mean song! Don't ever listen to it!

Think About You - Don't nesserely like this song that much.

Sweet Child O' Mine - I love this song soo much! It is a very great love song! This is my favorite song on this album. Axl
has great vocals in this song. Give it a five star rating.

You're Crazy - Kinda mean! The worst GNR song of all time.

Anything Goes - A dumb song! I don't like it.

Rocket Queen - I think this song maybe sort of a Don't Cry sort
of song with a sad melody at the end. Skip it after 4 minutes.

I think buy this album for Sweet Child O' Mine the most!

    Sincerely from Telegraph Road.

5-0 out of 5 stars My review for .... Appetite For Destruction
Ok. I noticed that my other reviews are sorta short, so I was gonna make this one a lil more longer. This album is great.Every song is good.I mean every song.I will go more in depth later. Here are my reviews for the songs.

Welcome To The Jungle--- this song is probably the best opener for an album in metal history. Its Guns N Roses first album and they express how they live and what they are encountering.L.A. is in fact a jungle. This was even more so in the 80s.

It's So Easy--- This song is so cool. The bass lines are Duffs at his best.It has nice lyrics[ first song in which they say f*** ] which is good in every metal album. It is not a metal album unless it has f*** in it!

Nightrain--- This is by far the best song to open up a concert with. They did this on Use Your Illusion Tokyo World Tour. You can buy these two videos on Amazon.com and your local video store. They should have it.This song is great to wake up to.I dont like waking up at all so you would imagine. This is axl at his best.He screams with harmony. No screechs like me.

Out Ta Get me--- ok. People dont like this song.Just look at other Amazon reviews.I dont see how. This is a song to kick someones ass to.The guitars are great. It has one of the best openers in GN'R history. Its so simple, but so cool. Its to get you fired up.The drums are cool.Axl's voice seems to be sorta "out of it" in this one.

Mr. Brownstone--- This song is awesome too.The drums are cool in this one.It has way-over-the-top lyrics.

Paradise City--- ahhh.... everyone's favorite. This song is by far the best 2nd best... #1 being Nightrain. The few songs that I listed are enought to buy it.The drums are cool. The guitars are top of the game.

My Michelle--- very catchy tune. Not much to say about it.. its an awesome filler.

Think About You--- I DONT SEE HOW ANYONE COULD NOT LIKE THIS SONG!People are saying in other views that this song sucks. This is better this Mr. Brownstone and everyone likes Mr. Brownstone. The lyrics are average. The music is great.

Sweet Child O' Mine--- This song is so awesome.Everyone that likes music likes this one.Its top of its game.

You're Crazy--- This one is another one that people dont like.I still dont know why not.Awesome tune.

Anything Goes Tonight--- This one is another one.I like every single track on this record.Best metal record of the last 80s.

Rocket Queen--- This song is f***n' awesome.Yes. I cursed in this one.Anyone who doesn't like this is mental.Great way to finish an album.

Overall, I would give this album 9.99 out of 10.I say that and not give it 10 because the cover sucks. lol.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where the classic Crue sound was born
Shout At The Devil (1983.) Motley Crue's second album.

Motley Crue came onto the eighties metal scene early in the decade, with their 1982 debut album Too Fast For Love. The album was an excellent one, but sadly, it was a commercial failure. Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, and Mick Mars needed to follow up their commercial flop of a debut, and fast, if they wanted to get the audience they so desperately needed. And the following year, the heavy glam rockers released their second album, Shout At The Devil. How does the sophomore effort measure up? Read on for my review.

This was the album on which Motley Crue established their classic sound. Their debut album had a very scattershot sound that hinted at a number of musical directions, but on this album the group takes their sound in a very specific direction - and this serves the group well. Three massive hits for the band came from this album - the classic title track, Looks That Kill, and Too Young To Fall In Love. Any Motley Crue fan, from the casual types right down to the die-hards, will tell you that these tracks are true masterpieces. I'm not the least bit surprised that they still get radio play. But to fully appreciate this album, one must go beyond the hits. There's an often overlooked cover of the Beatles proto-metal classic Helter Skelter, and the Crue covers it very well. With plenty of all-out hard rockers and the occasional track that has melodic elements to it, this is an album that doesn't fail to please.

Many of Motley Crue's albums were rereleased in the Crucial Crue remaster series - remasters that feature a number of bonus tracks including demos, live versions of songs, and even some previously unreleased songs! A little word of advice, though - if you're just starting a Crue collection, get the Music To Crash Your Car By Vol. 1 Box set - It's got the first four albums, plus a ton of bonus cuts, including some stuff that's not available outside the box. But if you're just buying the individual CDs, go with the Crucial Crue ones.

Shout At The Devil is the album that gave birth to what is now called the band's classic sound, but it would be with their next album that they would really break into the mainstream. This album is considered by many to be the band's strongest, and it's only right that it is praised so much. If you're a fan of eighties metal, don't hesitate to buy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars arguably their best, certainly an 80s classic
quite different from their first release Too Fast For Love, i personally love that album but this is quite great in another way. More heavy and alot less raw and punkish, certainly produced a hell of alot better as most bands do when they make some money. the guitar of mick mars is instantly catchy and just makes you wanna stomp your feet threw the ground. Mick is and always was a very underrated guitarist. Not much filler here either, Knockem Dead kId is kinda repetative to me but doesnt suck. This is right before the Crue kinda sold out to Mtv and the mainstream, there is no sappy ballads here or the incredible amounts of filler on the following 2 albums. If you like the Crue there is probably no way you wouldnt enjoy this hard rocking album. This made them stars, and what they sold after was basically because of the repitation they won off this album. A defining moment in 80s glam metal for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal
Shout at the Devil is a critically important album. While its predecessor, Too Fast for Love, was quite good, SATD lunged forward with a fury that left the aforementioned release in a glamorous dust. SATD is heavy--in pacing, in mood, in lyrics, in its mantra. But it's an image of a moment in musical time and location that will never happen again. It never could happen again. Ask anyone who survived it. You can hear the Sunset Strip beginning to unravel even here in 83'--well before Cobain--and in many ways this sad imminent doom is every bit as punk as albums that are officially labeled as such. This album never tried to be punk; it just is, and that is what makes it so, even if it is in a non-standard way.

Like death and taxes, you can count on AC/DC. The Australian metal men, unlike the more daring likes of Metallica, have stuck with one virtually unchanged formula since 1973. While '90s albums such as Who Made Who and Razor's Edge are uneven at best, the five-years-coming Stiff Upper Lip marks a return to the group's Back in Black prime. Muscular, meaty, and powerful, Stiff Upper Lip boasts a dozen instantly hard and heavy classics full of macho bravado, double entendres, and, of course, Angus Young's trademark guitar. From the archetypal title track to the more portentous "House of Jazz" to the forceful, irresistible syncopation of "I Feel Safe in New York City," AC/DC are again at the top of their game. --Katherine Turman ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Better back in the 70s
AC/DC was a very good band in the 70s but when Bon Scott died the legend left many though. Till the 80s when they met Brain Johnson who brought the band back. Back in Black was a very good Album, and not many bands write a song to their old friend who passed away. Back In Black was the song to Bon. Angus Young is known as one of the best guitar players who can only play 3 chords I heard. I respect them for still playing at this age they are at, but the newer alubum isnt so good. I am not saying they went down,I still love them alot..

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite good
My only criticism of this CD is that the title tune is so good, the rest of the CD is sort of a letdown. But the whole album is still good--perhaps AC/DC's best since Razor's Edge.I didn't find one clunker on the album. It's not their best, but still a 5-star production.

4-0 out of 5 stars Got it the day it hit store shelves...
As a rabid AC/DC fan, i had been anxiously awaiting this albums arival in store shelves months before it was released. I rember all of the hype behind the release of this album, how it was supposed to be a return to the vintage 70's AC/DC sound (in other words, a Bon Scott era styled album). I actually got to hear all of the song before this was even released, one of the local radio stations i listened to aired a world broadcast premire of the album, the band actually came into the studio and did interviews with the DJ's and played cuts off of the new album. Even though this is by no means a BACK IN BLACK, HIGHVOLTAGE or HIGHWAY TO HELL, this is the best thing they put out since THE RAZORS EDGE, this is a hell of a lot better then BALLBREAKER, that is for sure. The band themselves said in the interview that this was ment to be a return to form, the songs are actually very smokey, bluesy and raw. My only complaint is that Malcolm Young said that there were actauly 17 songs from the sessions of this album but only 12 made the final cut, i would of really loved to hear some of those songs like "Cyber". I really think that the people dissing this album have their head up their @$$, this is almost up to par with the classic stuff, which can not be said for most classic bands who release new albums that suck compared to their classic ones (Aerosmith is a master at doing this). O.k., Brian's voice is not what it used to be, it was on the decline ever since they finished FLICK OF THE SWITCH in 83/84 and has never been the same. You have to understand that Brian is in his 50's now, so you can't expect him to have the same voice as he did in 1980. As for the rest of the band, i think they have become better with age, sure, Angus might not be as fast or wild as he was back in the 70's, but he is still great as ever. My favorite tracks were STIFF UPPER LIP, SAFE IN NEW YORK CITY, HOUSE OF JAZZ, SATALITE BLUES, and ALL SCREWED UP. If you are new to them, i suggest you get into the classics first, then pick this one up. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

One of the defining albums of thrash metal, Master of Puppets is arguably Metallica's best album (as well as their last with bassist Cliff Burton). Focusing on the concept of power and abuses thereof, this is a collection of complex, intelligent music, played at about a hundred miles an hour. Not that these are short songs; this eight-song album clocks in at over an hour, which makes it all the more impressive that not one moment on this recording is boring. In tackling various approaches to their subject, Metallica is insightful lyrically as well as musically: "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" is from the point of view of an institutionalized inmate and "Disposable Heroes" is the perspective of a soldier. If all you've heard of Metallica is what's been on the radio recently, check this one out. You're in for a surprise. --Genevieve Williams ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST CD METALLICA EVER MADE!!!!!
I wont bore you with all the single song ratings, I'm not gonna waste your time. Just putting it short, there is no flaw with this cd, it's Metallica in their prime. Master of Puppets (song)is my favorite Metallica song and best on the cd. Lots of awesome solos, really heavy and lots of madness. One of the best cds I've ever bought, definitely best Metallica cd. METALLICA RULES THE WORLD!!!!!!! BUY IT!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Great! You should know by now!
Most definitive of their catalog by far, they lost alot of writing ability after Cliff died and have never been this good since(live or studio). Not too many true metal bands left, check out Majur Bludd live if you like real metal like this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Feelin' like DeNiro in Taxi Driver...
What PE and Anthrax began with "Bring The Noise", this disc continues and betters.

Over 10 years on and this album is still amazing.Listening to this makes you realize how mediocre many of the current stable of rap/metal bands are.

The pairings were inspired - and for the most part the tracks stay true to both contributors.Cypress and Sonic are amazing on "Mary Jane" - that track was why I sold most of my books and cds back in '95 to afford the trip to see them on the lollapalooza tour that year - but alas, no joint appearance materialized in Toronto.Helmet and House of Pain could blow the speakers off any system with "Just Another Victim"! And Slayer with Ice T makes you forget all about Body Count.

Once this album goes on my system, it never comes off until every track has been played.

Before you go out and waste your money on some of the stuff record companies are packaging lately, go pick this album up and educate yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Judgement Night a Must Have Soundtrack
This is a great soundtrack to own.If you liked Anthrax and Public Enemy together you'll love this "various artist" soundtrack. Most of the Rap/Hip Hop/Soul artists work well with the Alternative/Metal/Rock artist with Cypress Hill and Sonic Youth being the high point of the entire album. There was only one that didn't seem like they were even in the same studio when the song was recorded but I gotta leave some suspense find out and wonder why like I have.If you don't have it get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it before it goes out of print.
This Gem is hard to find.Get it before you can't.Gurnge,Metal and Rap collide.Just get it.You will play it and friends will ask who is this.ICE T and Slayer???None of these bands will ever play together agin. Not only that it is good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Above average tribute album to a legendary band
The first "Nativity in Black: A Tribute to Black Sabbath" tribute album is one of the best tribute albums ever to be assembled, and while not all of the versions here are great representations of the songs from the legendary band, it is still an above average tribute album that deserves to be in any Sabbath or older hard rock fan's collection.Hardcore and rap/metal pioneers Biohazard do a solid cover of "After Forever", while White Zombie superbly remakes "Children of the Grave".Megadeth's lightning speed take on "Paranoid" is worth the price of admission alone, while Ugly Kid Joe turns in a surprisingly great rendition of "N.I.B.".Faith No More's live version of "War Pigs" may grate on some people's nerves because of Mike Patton's vocal change up's, while 1000 Homo DJs' "Supernaut" cover is underrated.Sepultura turns in a cover of "Symptom of the Universe" which is lacking, while sludge masters Corrosion of Conformity turn in a solid rendition of "Lord of This World".Ozzy and Therapy?'s "Iron Man" is essentially the exact same as the classic Sabbath track, while other contributions from Type O Negative, Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson & Godspeed, and Bullring Brummies (featuring Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, and Rob Halford) are pretty solid. All in all, "Nativity in Black" is a great tribute to a legendary and influential band, and it's certainly much better than the second NIB tribute album.

5-0 out of 5 stars The finest Tribute album ever
Listening to this album as a kid got me into heavy metal music and established my love of Black Sabbath.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but very close to it!
Being a huge Sabbath fan, I looked forward to my purchase of the Nativity in Black Tribute CD, and I have not regretted my purchase. With all CD's, there are excellent tracks, and there are abysmal tracks.Fortunately this album contains much more excellent tracks than abysmal ones. Here is a quick review of the tracks on the CD, and my opinion.

1.)Biohazard-After Forever (9/10):A great opener in my opinion of a very underrated Sabbath song. The guitar work is great, just like the original with a "modern" touch.

2.)White Zombie-"Children of the Grave (9/10):" Great remake of a classic Sabbath song. The little voice overs in here, although they seem to make little sense, give this song the haunting mood it needs while still maintaining it's metal groove.

3.)Megadeth- "Paranoid (10/10):" A great metal band which knows how to cover another great metal band, which is what all the tracks need.Guitar solo in the middle is excellent, and helps earn this track as one of my favorites on the album

4.)1000 Homo DJ's "Supernaut (10/10):"This is another perfect track. The "advertisement" in the beginning is classic, in my opinon the best part of the track.

5.)Therapy? with Ozzy "Iron Man (9/10):"Almost identical to the original due to ozzy's vocals, but in a faster groove, which makes this track great.

6.)Corrosion of Conformity "Lord of this World (8/10):"Before listening to this track, I didn't really like Lorof this World, but this track was good enough for me to give Sabbath's version a chance.

7.)Sepultura "Symptom of the Universe (4/10):"This is one of the abysmal tracks I was talking about. The riffs and drums are OK, but the vocals are death metal like. This track should have been put on Hell Rules as it is more so death metal lyrics.

8.)Bullring Brummies "The Wizard (10/10):"This group consists of Bill Ward and Geezer Butler, original Sabbath members, and Rob Halford, along with a guitarist who I cannot remember the name of.Since Butler and Ward are the rhythm section for the band, it is no surprise that this song is one of the album's centerpieces.

9.)Godspeed with Bruce Dickinson "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (9/10):"Excellent remake of my favorite Sabbath song. The only problem would be the solo, which was nothing like the original, one of my favorite solos.Regardless of this however, this is a great track that is a must listen.

10.)Ugly Kid Joe "NIB (9/10):"This is my second favorite version of NIB aside from Primus' cover.A slightly diferent touch on the guitar riffs gives this song a new sound while maintaining its old feel.Good track.

11.)Faith No More (War Pigs (LIVE) (6/10):" An average track. While not abysmal, it is far from perfect. The voclas could use a little help too.Perhaps if it was a studio track t would have been better.

12.)Type O Negative "Black Sabbath (3/10):"The lyrics here are all death metal like.A bad way to end the CD.After all the perfect and near perfect tracks, the album ends with a horrible cover of a classic Sabbath song.

Overall, the album is a must buy for all Sabbath fans. While there are a few bad tracks here, there isn't enough to not purchase this otherwise excellent tribute album. ... Read more
