5-0 out of 5 stars Mike Garrigan's Start at Chapel Hill
This is a great album. I have one of his best, most collectable and rare. You can agree that as he got his start playing coffee shops around Chapel Hill, N.C. Then played with anyone who asked him to jam with him, hoping his magic talent would rub off on them. He would always talk to you at U.N.C. after his shows instead of running home. He formed Collapsis and strung an electric guitar around his neck, but it wasn't his calling yet.

I am putting the cd "mike: the lessons of autum" for sale on ebay on may 27, 2004. It will have his pictures and more facts. Just browse under cd's Mike Garrigan .

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly The Best Artist Ever
Mike Garrigan is, without a doubt, a musical talent unlike anything out there. His work is very well written, both musically and lyrically. It has real emotion and real depth. It's a wonder that his solo albums haven't caught on, and that Collapsis didn't become much more popular than they were while they existed.

On this album specifically, Mike went with a full band electric sound. This, his third solo album, is a depature from his first two albums which were much more acoustic. These two original albums are at present only available direct from his website. However, this album is still excellent, and he sounds just as good singing over electric guitar as he does over acoustic.

"Rusted Radio," "She Alone," "A Better Place," "Sour Milk," "See You Tonight," and"Don't Fade Away" are the more serious but still upbeat tracks."Summer Machine," "Sigourney Weaver," and "God Lives in My Backyard" fit more as the very upbeat songs, and have are about less serious topics."4th of July" is rather low key, and mildly melancholy."Throwaway, A Race Horse" is by far the most low key and nearly heartwrenching song on the album, depending on how you interpret the lyrics.I do know some people who take it as a song of hope as well.

In any case, this is a brilliant album.Expect more great work from Mike in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Mike Garrigan is devoted to the craft of music, and it's shown in the studio journal for this album, and in the music itself. The album versions of songs such as "rusted radio" and especially "don't fade away" outshone their original versions that he posted in the downloads section of his website. The album is a breath of fresh air from what else is out there.I highly recommend it. ... Editorial Review

Course of Empire has always been tricky to pigeonhole: a little goth, a little industrial, a little metal, a (very) little pop. Add glam to the mix and you've got Telepathic Last Words. It's the band's most ambitious record, but it would appear that ambition doesn't suit Course of Empire so well. While there are some decent riffs and rhythms there, such moments rarely coincide. --Keven McAlester ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How the hell did this album escape public acclaim?
The envelope of progressive metal has been breached. There is no genre that this band or this album can safely be put in.Despite the fact that I am an extraordinarily picky listener, I have found in this recording an extraordinary depth and variety that satisfies me far beyond the typical recording I listen to. While many "experimental" bands are adept at adding a lot of fluff to a disc, there is not a single throwaway track on this disc. The best thing about this album is that it manages to be boldly innovative without being weird simply for the sake of being weird. This group was clearly too experimental to gain wide commercial acceptance but also too polished to be embraced by dogmatic metalheads. Although this is certainly not the first band to perform or record with two percussionists, this is the first band with two percussionists I've heard of that really makes memorable rhythms. The percussive rhythyms on this album have a narcotic quality. The Magreb/Near Eastern elements are very effective here, yet it doesn't take any illegal substance to appreciate them. How should I describe the vocals? Vaughn Stevenson doesn't sound like anyone I've heard before. His voice sounds midrange/nasal in spots but not to the extent that it sounds annoying. There is enough intentional warble in his voice to offend the typical metalhead, but the heavy-handed guitar playing would probably scare away most of the fans of British alternative music.Despite the hypnotic pulse beats you hear on some of the tunes on this CD, there's no mistaking this disc for techno! The beats are made by flesh-and-blood percussionists with drumsticks and with digitally altered timbres for optimal effect. There seems to be plenty of musical space in this recording so that every instrument can be heard (although the drumming of both percussionists sounds blended). For the fans of the heaviest rockbands: If you enjoy the kind of rigid ensemble playing where the whole band is playing using a jackhammer for a metronome, then you will not be able to appreciate many of the sumptuous subtleties this disc offers. For more open-minded listeners:If you do not find a way to get your hands on this album, you are depriving yourself of one of the most amazing recordings produced in the nineties.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
This album takes a couple of listens to really get into (like a Tool or Matthew Good album, for exemple), but when you do get into, you'll want to stay there. This is not thoughtless-sing-alond-and-don't-think music, this is an exercice of style and a good one. A mix of metal, industrial, rock and even pop, but always a good mix.

The only thing to hold against Course of Empire on this album is that they sometimes take too long to finish a track. While New Maps (or Neli Maps if you prefer) and Information are great metal-industrial songs of perfect lenght, songs like Persian Song and Respect take too long to finish. That said, it's really a minor detail.

The best songs on this album (without taking anything from the others) are definitely in the last segment of the album, starting with 59 Minutes and ending with Respect. I often quote the lyrics from 59 Minutes : "Nothing will save you from human behavior, Nothing will save you, you built your own savior." Then there's Freaks that you can listen when you're mad (it helps!). Captain Control is the pop song on the album, and it's a catchy one. Then comes Respect, which is the song you'll want to listen to loud. Well, the first half of it anyway (I said earlier it should have been shorter).

So, from the great intro (I could just listen to Radio Teheran and the first seconds of New Maps over and over) to the hidden track, this is a wonderful achievement. If I would to compare this band to any other, it would be Stabbing Westward. Both bands are worth checking out. So do it. Now. Come on now! Carry on.

5-0 out of 5 stars COE Is one of the best bands ever!
Simply put, Course of Empire is one of the best bands to ever get together. The only reason they aren't as famous as Pearl Jam is because the record company totally [messed] up on their marketing plan.Don't miss this last recording of a band that should have been selling millions of records! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Revelations
Quite a while ago, I picked up Morning View.I liked it a lot, but it wasn't enough for me to keep looking for Incubus (and the fact that I only ever found songs from Make Yourself didn't help). Then one day in a restaurant, I heard some music playing that I really liked the sound of.It sounded like Brandon singing, but there was no way the Incubus I knew could be playing music like this!So I made a mental note of the one lyric I could pick out, and then searched for it.Turns out it was "Favorite Things" and as soon as I found out where it came from, and having listened to one or two other songs on the album, I went and bought it.

At first listen I was more surprised by the difference between S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and Morning View than anything.I didn't really understand what was going on with the music - the funky, syncopated groove of songs like 'Redefine' and 'New Skin' went right over my head.'Vitamin' was much more friendly, since I listen to a lot of hard rock and it immediately seemed right at home (this CD has a lot of bass in the mix.I blew my speakers listening to 'Vitamin' too loud ;)A couple of the songs I just didn't understand - like the heavy-quiet 'Idiot Box,' and 'Magic Medicine' with its bass, drums, and children's book reading, while others like 'Glass' and 'Deep Inside' I loved the first time I heard them.

The CD stayed in my player for about a month, and over that time I finally started to get my head around the idea of funk - and I realized that I really liked it, especially when fused with the hard rock that I like so much. This combination put Incubus in my top 4 favorite bands, along with I Mother Earth, Spacehog, and Dream Theater.

If you like funk or hard rock and are looking for a little new music, give this album a listen. If you really like A Crow Left Of The Murder and are looking for more along those lines, try Make Yourself or Morning View instead. If you want to see Incubus' true roots, check this album out.No true Incubus fan that I know likes only their new stuff.

The only problem I have with it is the fact that it's Incubus' only album like this.More musical, tighter, and more polished than their previous stuff, but before they turned to where they are now.Their new music isn't a compromise made for radio play or anything - they just took a COMPLETELY different direction. If you listen to 'A Crow Left Of The Murder' and 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E.' it sounds like two different bands.

5-0 out of 5 stars redefine
From the start to the finish, Science has captured something sacred when it comes to how music can sound. The song Redefine is a song with a great introduction to the cd, a funky verse, and an explosive chorus that sends a message. The next few songs are accompanied by great drums, bass, and the rest. They have now established themselves as proffessionals. Magic Medicine is a great interlude for this kind of cd. My Favorite Things and A Certain Shade of Green are next, but not in that order. They're accused of playing really good songs that display good messages in this area of the cd. Next, Summer Romance, with its jazzier sound, shows off a different side of Incubus. Nebula is a deeper sounding song with good everything, and cool structure. Deep Inside is a great song. Period. Calgone is one of the most innovative songs I've ever heard in that it goes on for nearly 20 mintues and is split up in to seemingly different songs. This cd is a must listen to for anyone who enjoys any shape or form of Rock music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just amazing.
This is another great CD by a no-name band.I wish their second CD were more readily available.I saw these guys live and picked up the CD at the show, it's great.Songs like "133," "Faster," "All I Want," and "Money + Fame." are IMO the best.If you want to know what they sound like, think Linkin Park meets Sublime.Very good, worth a listen if not a buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dial Se7en is a ten
Dial 7 is more than another 311, they are so much more.If you like a CD that sounds like it has 4 or 5 different bands on it but it is actually the same band, then this is for you. From hard core 311 type, to old blues royal fingerbowl type, to reggae modern bob marley type, this band has a buttload of talent. It is a fun CD to listen to because it's not about anger and having sex or doing drugs. It's about having a good time and living.Great CD.I highly recommend it to anyone that likes groovy hard core or a little bit of rap and reggae.

5-0 out of 5 stars the reason i live
man this cd is just incredible, ive been listening to this for 2 years now and i still love it.no matter how many bands you can compare them to they still have a sound that only they could pull off-and they definately pullit off with authority and style-which is more than i can say for at least75% of music out there.i mean these guys are so good that i have a hardtime believing that they still havent hit the mainstream but i dont know ifthe public is ready.id would compare them to 311 but i dont think 311 hasanything on dial-7.....just go get it! and go to their website and ordertheir other cd as well! dialse7en-later ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The drummer is my Uncle's brother, no lie!
I knew about this band through family and recieved their first LP, Omniphonic Global Nova, from my uncle. To tell you the truth, it was not very good. It has the some of the same songs as Soak, but raw versions. For this next album, they hired a looper, which is not a good idea. The existing instruments should speak for themselves. Otherwise, it is a decent album with a nice grove. That might be baised though.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great CD no one has heard of
This was a really good CD, which had the short lived single Shuttergut (Caroline).Shuttergut was the track that got me to listen to the album, but songs like Me Compassionate, Transcindental Drift, Aphrodight, and Street Monkey keep me listening to it.Definately worth picking up, even though the price has gone up.

5-0 out of 5 stars really really good

3-0 out of 5 stars an okay CD
This CD is a great CD. Well, it was when it came out in 2000.I purchased this CD after buying the Drunk Enough To Dance CD (2002) and the songs just aren't as cool as the music we have nowadays. But if you're caught in the 90's then you need this CD.I really love this CD but after hearing Drunk Enough To Dance, it's not as good.

    3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay......
The songs sound all the same....it's okay, not the best...but its a good CD to just kick back and listen to...but nothing i would listen to more than twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled: This Isn't The Real Beautiful Midnight!
In an era where rock music was so relentlessly depressing that you could cry, the Matt Good Band was making rock (real rocking rock too, not indie/emo pseudo-rock) so relentlessly beautiful that you could cry.

And of their many, many awesome albums (namely: Raygun, Last of the Ghetto Astronauts, Underdogs, Audio of Being and Matt's solo stuff), this 1999 release is the best, the masterpiece, the Led Zepplin IV of the MGB catalogue.

I would say that these are the best lyrics of recent times, delivered by an absolutely stunning voice. Politically charged without being banally preachy (ala American Idiot) and with an absolutely impeccable band backing him up, Matt'll break your heart 14 times and leave you shaken / happy / thinking / occasionally air guitaring.

Of course, when I say this album I mean the real Canadian release. The disaster that Amazon sells is just that CD with the big-name out-of-place "Apparitions" and "Everything Is Automatic" in place of the original "Going All The Way" and "Let's Get It On" (both are tracks that I would deeply regret not owning). I'm guessing that those particular tracks were pulled due to their "racy" titles...

I'm also guessing that's the reason that they didn't just throw Underdogs' other hit "Rico" on this album (with its verses like: "Let it play out / Buy the rights to endless love / And if your friends don't like it / You can tell them for me to / F^$% off, f^$% off, f^$% off, f^$% off.")

And seriously, please explain censoring out Born to Kill and A Boy and his Machine Gun (Im not gonna get reported for using those words am I?!?) It reminds me of those James Bond movies: "Live and Let ____" and "License to _____". I guess that violence is OK if its mindlessly romanticized by Vin Diesel, but not if its criticized/satirized by MGB...

Even still, this CD is amazing. Just don't buy it here unless you have to.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Over-looked and under-rated
The original Canadian version of this album is simply one of the best album's made.Track it down if you can.It is a shame that MGB and MG (in his subsequent releases) have not achieved greater recognition and success, as the quality of the work justifies it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite
MGB has again done the uncommon. It seems that most artists only know how to write songs about love but not Matthew Good Band.He proves yet again that there are many topics in life to write about, making him different from all other rock bands. If you are sick of hearing about the usual mundane love songs, try this band out.MGB is a rarity and people should know it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Magic Of Nobuo
This CD is a real great one to relax to. Stressed out? Let Nobuo's magic calm your nerves. But is this CD a must have? Well, if you got the Original Sountracks that have these songs, not really. But if you're new to Uematsu, go ahead and pick this CD up.

3-0 out of 5 stars There's nothing new here, but if you missed out on the way..
then you'll be sure to enjoy yourself.I ordered this CD fresh out of Japan when it came out, and I was very excited to see that new music had come out of Nobuo Uematsu -- until I got the CD.Instead of new music, what you will find is simply a CD anthology from tracks on other CDs.If you're like me and you've collected the other releases since they came out, or through eBay or similar sites, then save your money -- there's literally nothing new here at all.It was a great disappointment to me to hear all the same familiar arrangements as well -- I mean it when I say it's just a mix tape of his other CDs.

If you're new to collecting Final Fantasy music and you've haven't gotten a lot of Japanese releases, then I do recommend this CD.The selections are mostly all enjoyable -- his other CDs tend to have some "weird" songs on them that reflect his diversity as a composer (that's what they say) but they just annoy me.Regarding this CD, the winners are many, but I especially recommend picking it up for some of the music from Final Fantasy V that you'd miss out on -- Lenna's theme (dear friends version) is especially touching, the Theme of Love (celtic style) is enchanting, and of course, who can forget the very first track with Tina's song?

So, like I said, if you have most of the music -- don't bother. But if you're missing a lot in the series, pick it up for a treat. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Ever Passing Moment, Washington homespun punksters MxPx's eighth full-length album, will not disappoint the punk-thirsty faithful and will likely rouse many a fan-to-be from sleep. Showing no sign of letting up, this trio pumps it out with a relentless grind and an effortless finesse, demonstrating that artistic integrity is alive and well in the world of energy rock. The Ever Passing Moment showcases the band's aptitude for producing catchy anthemic choruses and clever rhythmic changeups while surging full force through each song. Vocal styling partially reflects the pop-punk band Green Day, and an honest tone prevails in the emotional moods of these outpourings. Throughout the project, the lyrics paradoxically demonstrate that the most profound things in life are also the simplest. Check out "My Life Story" or "Prove It to the World" to get a taste, but don't wait too long to get this album. At the rate these guys are going, it may soon be dated material. --Israel Button ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It's not that great
Mxpx were solidly putting out great albums. They were in between an underground and mainstream band for a little while. I mean they're on a major label but their songs dont get played that much on the radio and they don't sell millions of albums. They probably sell almost as much as Nofx, pennywise, no use for a name bands like that. This album is better than the new piece of crap they put out a year ago but man not by much, this is actually going away from their punk roots and into more just straight up rock n roll like foo fighters. there are some good songs on here but there are alot of songs that sound the same and are startinig to sound kinda whiny. Mxpx is on a hunt to sell out so buy as many of their records as possible so they can start putting out better albums even though i don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good But Could BeBetter. :)
If your a newcomere to MxPx then donm't get this cd first. jGet MxPx Live At The Show like i did. This is their, what i call "Practice" cd. It was one of their first and they were trying new songs like "responsibility", "Two Whole Years" and "Buildings Tumble". They are just starting out but i have to admit this is one of my favs but they did need to add more punk. Also Listen to "The Next Big Thing"! It was featured as the beginning song on the Playstation 1 game Supercross 2000! So if you want thaT SONG AND A GOOD GAME FOR ps1 Then Get Supercross 2000!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're only going to buy 1 Jimmy Buffet Cd...
This one really has all the songs most people are looking for, i.e. "Maragritaville," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the Great Hits, and then some
This is the greatest hits album for confirmed Parrotheads. I turned in my copy of the American greatest hits album, "Songs You Know By Heart," years ago. This import adds, to my mind, two songs that are better than much of SYKBH: "Last Mango in Paris," which is a classic rocking singalong and the expatriate's theme song, "Banana Republics," which will bring a lump to the throat of anyone who's lived a few thousand miles from their birthplace.

While I usually just raid my Buffett collection to create mix tapes, "All the Great Hits" manages to be a great mix on its own, and is one of Buffett's few albums I just drop into the CD player and listen to straight, over and over.

A must have for Parrotheads and well worth the extra money.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding.....Buffett's Best
Really captures Buffett's best work. Although everything he does touches the soul. He is truly an American legend. Music that makes Margaritaville a state of mind. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Nixons are one of the few bands hailing from Norman/Oklahoma City, but the foursome has nothing in common with the twisted psychedelia of theFlaming Lips or the transvestite punk of the Chainsaw Kittens. Its debut, Foma,is soulless, generic grunge. The album takes its title from author KurtVonnegut's phrase for meaningless lies that people live with to make themselvesfeel better-appropriate for a band that, given a different commercialenvironment, would probably sound like Poison. --Jim DeRogatis ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Underated!!!!!
How in the world could anyone listen to this album and give it a bad review???"Foma" is one of the most unheralded great pieces of music that I have ever heard. These guys can rock with the best, and yet can touch the emotions in a way only the greatest can. From "Sister", to "Passion", and "Foma", to "JLM" & "Fellowship", this album is incredible from beginning to end.I remember when this album first came out and "Sister" was getting quite a bit of airplay.Haven't heard much from them since on the airwaves but no matter how they sound now, they definately hit a high few bands will ever touch with "Foma".BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars generally OK
I bought this CD for one song that i remembered from the ninties, Sister.A great mid-nineties song that got some decent play back in the day.

The remainder of the CD has some pretty good tracks and some pretty average tracks. If you like the middle ninties post-grunge sound you'll like the majority of the CD.

1-0 out of 5 stars no
despite the terribly loud noise that came from this album, i fell asleep in the middle of it.i bought it with no money from the bargain bin of a record exchange.after i'd listened to it, i could picture the cashier laughing at me and saying "haha, you're stuck with this cd now..."i left it on the bus seat on the way to school for some unlucky person to stumble upon.sort of like jumanji, only it sucks.

sister is slightly worth listening to for about 5 seconds.other than that, forget this album. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Few would dispute that Frank Sinatra was one of the greatest popular singers of the 20th century. His voice had distinct power and majesty, whether he was belting out a swinging dance number or softly crooning a tender ballad. When he was at his height, no one could touch him, and the songs collected on Classic Sinatra showcase the range of his talent. Recorded during his memorable run for Capitol Records in the 1950s, the songs here are more than just his best, they're often the definitive recordings: "I Get a Kick out of You," "Young at Heart," "Witchcraft," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "In the Wee Small Hours," and"I've Got You Under My Skin." Like almost everything Sinatra recorded during this period, there isn't a dud to be found, which makes Classic Sinatra a perfect introduction to the work of this truly great talent. --Robert Burrow ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Sinatra
This CD is aptly titled, with a number of great songs from a time long past.I love the songs, love the voice.

My only complaint is that the quality of the recordings are only average to poor. Some of the songs sounded like they were mastered straight from an old scratchy record.I suppose some of that can't be avoided due to the age of the recordings. You'd think that in this day and age they could enhance the sound a little bit more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Sinatra...classic fare
Sinatra fans are sure to recignize every measure of every song in this collection, but it's nice to have all thes recognizable standards in one, swinging collection.

Would also make a great introduction to new or young audiences who might be (hard to believe!) unfamiliar with Frankie's signature style.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction to Frank Sinatra
If you're looking to buy your first Frank Sinatra record and are feeling overwhelmed by the 511 titles currently offered on Amazon.com (as of 02/24/05), then look no further. CLASSIC SINATRA is a perfect place to start.

More than any other single-disc Sinatra collection, CLASSIC SINATRA captures the true essence of Frank Sinatra. Not a "greatest hits" collection, CLASSIC SINATRA is even better; it's a collection of definitive songs from what's generally considered the greatest period of Sinatra's career--his recordings at Capitol records during the 1950s with conductors Nelson Riddle, Billy May, and Gordon Jenkins.

While many of these these songs weren't Sinatra's biggest selling singles, selections like "I've Got You Under My Skin," "Night and Day," "One For My Baby," and "Put Your Dreams Away" were clearly Sinatra's greatest songs--the songs he's best known for, and songs he continued to perform in concert and re-record for the rest of his career. (In fact, "Put Your Dreams Away" was actually played at Sinatra's funeral by longtime sidemen Bill Miller and Al Viola on piano and guitar--how much more definitive gan you get?)

One word of caution: This collection is so good that you will undoubtedly become hooked on Frank Sinatra and want to buy more immediately. When this happens, go out and buy his classic "concept albums" from the Capitol era, starting with (1) Songs for Swingin' Lovers!, (2) In the Wee Small Hours, (3) A Swingin' Affair!, and (4) Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely. After that, you're on your own.

Finally, if you must, feel free to explore Sinatra's Reprise Recordings from the 1960s, but try to steer clear of anything recorded after about 1965, with the exception of the Bossa Nova record with Antonio Carlos Jobim. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars incredible
Dispatch is a classic band, and its such a shame they broke up. There music has hints of different kinds, and it is especially a raegae inspired band, but with a different sence and twist on it. Every CD they have it great and fun filled to listen to. I would suggest any and all of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I got this CD from my friend on my lacrosse team and all I can say is that it is THE BEST!!! i constantly listened to "steeples" for about a month and I am still not tired of it."Mayday" is also a great song.I love O.A.R, 311, Moe., Phish, and all of them, but these guys are probably at the top. This CD is so worth the money. It is great for studying to.Go buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing
I have absolutely fallen in love with this CD. I'd never heard of Dispatch before I came to college this year and my roommate played it for me. Two of my other friends were big fans so this CD was almost always playing. It's not like the normal stuff that I listen to, but in a good way. Their songs are fantastic, ranging from funky to beautiful. Rarely do I find a CD where I like every single song, but this is one of them. They even have an instrumental with acoustin guitars and flutes. How many bands do that? This is a band off the beaten track, and it's sad that I became a fan after they broke up. Listen. Buy. Get hooked. It's wonderful music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of dispatch songs
this is the first dispatch cd i bought. i bought after i was at a party where i meet the greatest people to party with and herd the songs "The General" and "Elias". Once i listened to it i couldn't stop. Then i found out just a week ago that Dispatch broke up in July during the same week when i was in Botson where they had thier concert. Though i haven't bought a second cd even though i have had this one for a year and a half i highly recomond the band and get excited when i see my freind put parts of the song up in thier buddy info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly Amazing
I have been following Dispatc for a number of years now, and they have become one of the best badns of all time in my book, i just love the harmony, the beat and the rhythms. This new cd added to the dispatch collection is incredible, i just couldnt believe how every single song on the cd was good, not one bad one
