    Editorial Review

Baby Beluga is a fun-filled collection of favorite children's songs and Raffi originals, all performed in the singer's folksy, expressive style. Beluga begins with the sounds of whales communicating in their high-pitch squeaks (which presented here come across as cute and sweet) and features melodic lines that evoke vivid pictures of gentle waves and a frolicking whale. An illustrated sing-along book that is published separately is a nice companion to this first track, giving young listeners visual images of the song's narrative. The rest of this varied album blends traditional songs like "Oats and Beans and Barley" and "This Old Man" with four original pieces by Raffi, including the instrumental "Water Dance." Liner notes have the complete lyrics, a description and history of beluga whales, and explanations of Raffi's inspiration and ties to each song. This is an excellent album with catchy tunes that's sure to become a household favorite. --Tami Horiuchi ... 2-0 out of 5 stars This Album is the Cat's Meeeow!
I am a big fan of Raffi, and I have been since birth. I was even a fan of his while inside of my mother. My dad did a show of his in Tampa Florida and I began kicking my mom's stomach when I heard his voice. He is the best! I am sure I will listen to him for the rest of my life, until I die.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks For The Intro To Mehdi
I've always enjoyed great christmas music and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered "Christmas Treasures" by Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After searching online I found his site (SoothingMusic.Com) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to this CD several times I really must say that Christmas Treasures is a great find. Everyone from my kids to my Mother loves this CD.
I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver!
Well, sure...the songs became a wee bit tedious after hearing them for the one millionth time, but during my little boy's colicky first 5 months, Raffi's pleasant voice and relaxing songs were the practically the only thing that would sooth him (not to mention his parents!). Now that he is a little older, we still play Raffi...and I still get a big smile whenever he hears ... Read more

My family and I can't get enough of Ellipsis Arts Lullaby

My children and I listen to this beautiful compilation of lullabies sung by women from around the world when we want to relax at the end of the day. This music has fostered an interest and openmindedness about other cultures that I so appreciate.Purchase this CD and the others in
the series - you and your children will also be enriched by the beautiful music (also, they get to read the lyrics which they think is very cool!).

An extraordinary array of songs to entertain your child and to keep you smiling while singing with them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!
My mother gave this to my son when he was 2 years old and he loved it instantly, now at 13 years old, he still enjoys it and can let loose and get silly while listening to it,( taking a break from his normal cool self for a bit).I am buying it again for a friends daughter who is turning 3. I'm sure she'll love it just as much. These songs have a way of staying with you and creeping into your head at the strangest times.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent album. Absolutely top quality
My family love this album. Doc Watson's Grandfather's Clock is excellent, so is "Puff the Magic Dragon". Only one song does not appeal to me a whole lot: The tune of "Ise Oluwa" is all right, but in themiddle of the song, the artist gets into a monologue and we usually fastforward through the talking part. Other than that, this is a solid, topquality album. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Though recorded in the 1970s, this classic Raffi album is still one of the children's troubadour's bestsellers. The gentle, joyful style; simple musical arrangements; and easy-to-follow up-front vocals have made Singable Songs for the Very Young a favorite among tiny tots, parents, and preschool teachers. By combining traditional songs like "The More We Get Together," "Down by the Bay," and "Going to the Zoo" with Raffi originals like "I Wonder If I'm Growing," "Peanut Butter Sandwich," and a jazzy near-cover, "Old MacDonald Had a Band," the album has a familiar feel while giving young children the opportunity to learn new songs and rhythms. Other notable titles include the interactive "Brush Your Teeth," "Five Little Pumpkins," and the tongue-twisting "Willoughby Wallaby Woo." --Deborah Moore ... Read more

This is our daughter's favorite album from birth.16 months later, she is still enthralled with every single song, especially the song about brushing your teeth. From start to end, every song gives it's own unique character to such a colorful album. I recommend this album to all, and I think it would make a wonderful Shower gift!

    5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
I grew up listening to Raffi, so my mother naturally bought this CD for my 7 month old son, when he was 4 months old. The CD is a lot of fun to sing to, and when he's fussy all I need to do is sing the first line of "The More We Get Together", "Five Little Frogs", or "Aikendrum" and he smiles right away and cheers up. I'd recommend it for parents who are looking for fun and simple songs to sing to their children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars cheerful, fun songs for your baby
I got this cd "Rise and Shine" as part of a three cd set, "Raffi's Box of Sunshine" as a gift and I love it.I started playing it for my two month old son in the morning as I changed his diaper and dressed him.He gets very excited and giggles and coos and loves to dance around the room to the songs.I have learned the words to the songs and sing them to him around the house. He is now 4 months old and loves "wheels on the bus" with all of the hand movements.I have even bought some books that are featured on the cd such as "Five little Ducks" and "Wheels on the bus" to read to him as the cd is playing or to sing to him on my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rise and Shine
My boys are 14 and 18 and they were reminiscing about all of the Raffi tapes we had; Rise and Shine, Everything Grows, Singable Songs for the Very Young, More Singable Songs for the Very Young...and all of the others. For years, Raffi was the only music that played in our car.Today, the boys still remember the words to to songs...what a nice memory. We still have the tapes and I hope to share them with my grandchildren some day.I have to say that Raffi is one of their best childhood memories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the holidays!
This has some great holiday songs, but I think Raffi should have a Chanukah album or a Kwanzaa album for people who don't even celebrate Christmas. And the song, "Comin' Down the Chimney" should have been on this album as opposed to the More Singable Songs album because the song is obviously about Santa Claus.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 years running
This is our favorite Christmas CD for five years running. Both of my girls love it and know all the songs by heart. My favorite song is "must be Santa" which has the beautiful voice of children singing the chorus. My oldest daughter loves Petit papa Noel. If you love Raffi you will love this CD, if you find some of Raffi's music overboard or obnoxious (bananphone maybe) you will still like this CD, it is toned down of his typical silly kiddie CDs and filled with more beautiful classic Christmas songs. ... This is a family album in the truest sense. With entertainers like Burl Ives, Danny Kaye, Pete Seeger, Loggins & Messina, Taj Mahal, and James Taylor performing some of their best-loved kids' titles, adults and children can share in the joy and fun of this multigenerational collection. Be it quacking with "The Ugly Duckling," singing along with folksy "This Old Man," bopping to the calypso beat of "The Banana Boat Song," or daydreaming to "House on Pooh Corner," every member of the family will find a favorite in this compilation of songs by the original artists. --Deborah L. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great CD for kids and adults!
You won't regret buying this CD. It has so many great songs by great artists, that "Over the Rainbow" is one of the worst -- and that's really saying something. My favorites are "Jelly Man Kelly," "Baby Beluga" and "Skip to My Lou." I hate cheesy children's music -- but there's none of that here! You'll be humming along with your kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Music is a Spoonful of Sugar for all!
Every child should have this CD if not for it's content (it's grrreat!) then for its "historical" value in exposing them to some of the musicals their parents grew up with.I wish there were more CDs like this - I would own them all.The only down-side is there are no accompanying lyrics but at least there's an address you can use to request them (free).Excellent!

Dust off your blue suede shoes and polish up the tail fins on the Chevy: this album transports listeners back to the 1950s and early 1960s with all-time classic rock & roll. Children will love the strong rhythms, (sometimes) silly words, and easy-to-follow vocals. Adults will enjoy the cruise down memory lane with megahits like "Rock Around the Clock," "Willie & the Hand Jive," "Rockin' Robin," and "Name Game." These are probably the songs my grandparents didn't want my parents listening to when they were kids. Oh, well. Change happens. These tunes are super fun for my grammar-school-aged children. Editorial Review

There are thousands upon thousands of children's albums out there, but the one that quietly left its mark with more '70s children than perhaps any other album was this disc. Free to Be...You and Me was a pet project of proud feminist Marlo Thomas (a.k.a. "That Girl"), and it was born--according to the liner notes--by the desire to provide her niece with music "to celebrate who she was and who she could be." Harry Belafonte sings "Parents Are People," ex-football great Rosie Grier offers an incredible, touching melody titled "It's All Right to Cry," and Diana Ross waxes future-positive on "When We Grow Up." A great hour of brain food for young--and not-so-young--children. --Denise Sheppard ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars wish we liked it more
Perhaps if my daughter was older (she's 3 1/2) she'd get more into this cd. But frankly, there's not enough "music" and it simply doesn't keep her interested. Even I, who had it as a child find myself fast forwarding through it. Save this one for the over 7 set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chris
This is a great compilation of songs!"Free to Be..." can be enjoyed by parents and children alike.I think that the messages weaved within these songs are great ones for kids (and adults!) to hear - they challenge male and female stereotypes. At the same time, the songs remind us that there are natural differences b/t us, too (girls "can't be daddies, or grandpas" and William gets a doll so that he can be a great dad someday). The messages are sometimes subtle, sometimes obvious, but all of the songs have a fun beat and stories that kids can relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get it while you can, in a plain brown wrapper.
"Free to be...." should be a yard-sale trifle, too corny for consideration as anything other than baby-boomer nostalgia.

    If only...

We live in a time when the word "free" is subject to daily, fanciful redefinition, and even a cartoon sponge arouses suspicion.

The gentle lessons of "Free to Be..." are more relevant than ever. And they're political dynamite, as proved by the nasty reviews seen occasionally below.

Get this disc to remember. Get it for your kids, none of whom may ever have the luxury of taking tolerance for granted, as some of us did in an abbreviated era when cultural moments like "Free to Be..." helped heal the past, and made the future seem infinitely bright.

Belated cheers to Marlo and all participating artists. At this point in our decline and fall, I've begun to take down names... ... Read more

Larry Groce is the singer in this series and his voice is very friendly and sedating. I've loved his music since I was four years old and I still do. 1-0 out of 5 stars not the best lyrics
I bought this CD for my two year old. Had I known that one of the songs refers to a drunken sailor who should be put away until he is sober, I would have purchased something else.
I think Disney should be more careful of what they put on their CDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
What a great cd! I have wasted so much money on cd's that say they have the traditional versions of the songs only to end up with real rubbish with electric guitars, distortion and rap!! Its enough to drive parent. . . and child . . .insane! This collection is absolutely wonderful. The songs are the ones you grew up with, sung in a way that encourages sing-alongs. I'm getting a second copy for the car!

3-0 out of 5 stars Vol. 2 is good, but not the best.
I have owned all four volumes of the Disney Children's Favorite Songs since I was three years old, and although this one is enjoyable, I think it is probably the poorest of the four. The songs just aren't as much fun to listen to as on the others, and I recall that one of them, "Old Blue," in particular, used to frighten me when I first got the tape because the singer sings that his dog died. Well, I'm over that fear now *muffles a sob* but I still don't think this tape is the best one to start off with.I'd advise buying all four volumes together, and if you only want to buy one, get Vol. 4.It's undoubtedly the best. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best for sing along
This album is not as much fun to sing along to as volume 1. We will probably listen to this album very rarely as I am already looking for another to replace it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your typical wretched children's music
The whole family loves this music (although I shouldn't presume to speak for the 5 month old)and that is more than I can say for most children's music. The singer, Larry Groce has a very good singing voice and his interpretations are great. The music is upbeat without being saccharin. The variety is a definite bonus and most of the songs are timeless classics. We hate hate hate the Wee Sing collection but we love this particular Disney set (we have volumes 1-4).We live in a particularly desolate part of New England and in order to get anywhere worth going we have to drive a minimum of 2-3 hours--this music is so helpful in the entertainment dept!

4-0 out of 5 stars nice selection of children's songs
This is a nice selection of songs, featuring a couple of nursery rhyme medleys and many classics such as Alouette, Michael Row the Boat Ashore, and the Alphabet Song.

While the selections seem well thought out, they are all performed by the same singers (Larry Groce and the Disneyland Children's Sing-Along Chorus) which detracts slightly from the enjoyment.Another Disney series, 'Classic Disney', features songs from Disney movies and is performed by the original artists.

A nice value. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Lullabies lend themselves to woozy re-creations, a sort of endless repetition that flags under the weight of the concept (putting kids to bed for their much-needed sleep) and the lack of weight accorded to the music. You might expect a Disney lullaby collection to be on a par with the most mediocre collections, but this one is really a fine set. The tunes are standard--from the famous "Brahms Lullaby" to "All the Pretty Little Horses"--but they're uniformly excellent and creative, staying within the realm of acoustic music that sounds and feels organic. These are Disney-related tunes, for the most part, so "Stay Awake" is here, as is the whimsical "Sleep, Daddy, Sleep." Musically, the set is varied, steering away from a repetition of instrumentation or delivery. That makes it easily entertaining enough for back-to-back listens, which any parent will be asked for with this collection. --Andrew Bartlett ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars boooooring, bad voices
Most of the songs are boring and I cringe when some of the singers try to hit high notes.I love some of my daughter's cds. There are others that don't interest me, but I don't mind them. This one is grating.Luckily, my 2 year old isn't too thrilled with it either and just asks me to play the first song (when you wish upon a star) over and over.I'm going to have to find that song on another album with a better singer.I'd recommend not wasting your money on this cd. For a wonderful, soothing lullaby album, I'd recommend "World Sings Goodnight".It's absolutely beautiful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't so happy
I got this CD as a gift. I listen to the song along with my daughter, but she didn't seem to respond to it. the song was so well words can not explain. I bought a fisher Price CD call little people a sind along song and she love that compare to this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This CD is just classic Disney drivel.I was hoping for a quality recording, but it isn't even that.Cheesy doesn't even begin to describe it.With an organization the size of Disney, it's amazing they can put out such poor quality work. The music is very schmaltzy, the artists are mediocre.

I would give it zero stars, but I can't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still using now - 3 years later!!
We originally bought this for our unborn child as we wanted him to be exposed to some Chinese music in some sort of way since we, his parents are from mixed heritages (Chinese and American). We used it from day 1 as we put him down to sleep. And believe it or not we are still using it 3 years and 3 months later! We turn it on for him every single night without fail unless we are travelling!

The music is a melodic and chillingly, beautiful arrangement of choral voices, blending soft strings with mandarin lyrics. While you may not be able to understand it the sounds on the CD will lull any bby to sleep.Highly recommended...even adults will enjoy this music as well - so you can add it to your collection as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
Like a number of other reviewers - we adopted a daughter from China and she listens to it every night as she falls asleep.Since we stay in the room with her till she falls asleep - we listen to it too.None of us have gotten tired of it after almost a year.

I bought it based on the reviews here.So I am back on Amazon today to see if there is another cd by them anyone would recommend. No reviews for any of their other cds are on Amazon.Any suggestions?

    Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, angelic music

5-0 out of 5 stars Calms your soul.....
Just had to take a moment to write this review. I bought this CD 9 months ago right before the due date of my first baby. Being a new mom and nervous and trying to do everything right, I played this CD the first week home from the hospital. It would totally calm both me and baby and we would rock and rock until he was asleep. I've always loved all kinds of music but having such a peaceful CD to listen to helped me gain my perspective and take a deep breath and just enjoy this new little one I had in my arms. Music does that to me but this CD has something extra special.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Rated Recordings. Excellent Song Selection
Too often classical music CD's for families or kids are poor in quality. But that is not the case with this excellent CD. The recordings on this CD were selected from the very best, previously released recordings.

The songs were carefully chosen for the theme of "mothers-to-be and young children," and then outstanding recordings by legendary artists were used. The quality and performances are outstanding.

You can find these recording on the legendary "Complete Mozart Collection" by Phillips. It's a who's who of classical music superstars. That's how regarded this music is.

Some people would not notice the difference between this quality CD and, say, new-age influenced synthesizer classical music, but the quality difference is important. This is just wonderful music!

What everyone will appreciate is the pleasant selection of music. This is pleasant music for parents and young children, or anyone. Mozart is like that anyway. Everyone likes this Mozart CD, and it's great for kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL
I love this CD! I play it all the time when I am at home because it helps me to relax, and being 8 months pg...it definitely eases the stress.I also bring the CD to work with me sometimes and it's very relaxing.I highly recommend this for anyone who is pregnant or expecting ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars still great 6 years later
I bought the "Mozart Effect" CD and a few other classical CD's; Bach and another Mozart after my daughter was born in late 1998. We had a difficult time getting her to sleep at night and decided to try playing music to soothe her.The "Mozart Effect" CD worked every time.As soon as she heard the Toy Symphony play she would relax and just listen to the music until she fell asleep. It's been more than a year since we played the CD, and recently when she was ill, she asked to listen to "her music".It still has the same calming effect.Regardless of the controversy surrounding Mozart's ability to make babies more intelligent, I think this music is very comforting and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD
I received several classical music CD's as gifts before my daughter was born, and out of all of them (also including classical CD's I had already owned) this is definitely my favorite. It stands out because it is not full of simply "traditional" arrangements but rather is very light and playful - there are all sorts of cute little chirping and whirring noises that add to it as well.It is just a lot of fun, and provides the perfect background for cuddling with your new little one.

There is one comment below from someone who thought the music was too simple and was of poor quality.I would agree that the music is very simple (not a bad thing), but disagree with the notion that it is poor quality.Anyway, this should be just one CD in a library of different types of music, classical and other, to help your child's music appreciation develop. If it happens to expand other developmental skills as well, even better!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised-
The Mozart Effect - Music for Babiesis a pretty good disc. Admittedly not the best Mozart recordings around, but then my child is not exactly picky. I prefer Genie's Angels All Around as a lullaby CD but either The Mozart Effect or Angels All Around would make excellent baby shower gifts. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Programmed similarly to the Beethoven for Babies collection, this set of Bach compositions runs the emotional gamut, from the gently eye opening to the jumpy arm raising, collecting each set of pieces under a thematic header. The first several selections ("Waking Up") feature solo piano works that come directly from Bach's more pedagogic works, compositions intended for students to use as exercises to loosen their touch. Played superbly by pianist Sviatoslav Richter, as well as the Romero brothers (Pepe and Celedonio) on warm guitar, these compositions urge the ear to open. And then you come the pieces gathered under the "Playtime" heading: jazz pianist John Lewis picks up a couple pieces, as do the folks in Canadian Brass. Then the mood shift heads back to the sleepyhead state with "Winding Down" and "And So to Bed," each of which slows the tempo and quiets the passion to a doze. This is a fine set of Bach works. --Andrew Bartlett ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our favorite CD for all occasions
This is absolutely my favorite CD that we bought for our baby! We've bought quite a few classical-music-for-baby compilations, and this is far and away the best. The music is fun, flirty, stimulating, sweet, and beautifully performed. It's not syrupy, dumbed-down, or played on electronic instruments like some of those other compilations. We listen to it all the time. I now buy this as a baby shower gift for everyone I know!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bach and Roll!
You can't beat Bach.If classical music is the thing you want for your baby, get this CD.If you are single and have no kids, but classical music is your thing, get this CD.This is fantastic reading music, study music (regardless of what you're studying), and just plain relaxing music.I also highly recommend the CD, BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just for kids?? No way!!
This is wonderful classical music. If the kids like it, great! But, make no mistake about it, this is good for anyone. This is wonderful study music, reading music, or just plain relaxing music.Highlights include "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers"; "March of the Toys" (from BABES IN TOYLAND -- the reason I bought this CD); "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"; "The Little Train of Caipira" (no longer little when the music is over); and the audience favorite "Hoedown" (i.e. "Beef, it's what's for dinner!").

If you're into that whole thing of classical music sharpening a youngster's intellect, then this won't disappoint. If you're just into good old fashioned classical music in general, it won't disappoint you either. Also, I highly recommend to both groups the classical CD BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASS ACT. WE KID YOU NOT!
RCA continues its mid-priced series of collectibles recordings, featuring the "best of the best." Five new titles have just been released: "Piano Greatest Hits" (with Arthur Rubinstein tickling the keys on Beethoven, Mozart and Grieg faves); "Broadway's Greatest Hits" (with Arthur Fielder leading the Boston Pops); "Classics for Kids" (featuring Fiedler, James Galway, Eugene Ormandy and Al Hirt); "Heifetz Violin Greatest Hits" (with Fritz Reiner and Charles Munch among others) and "Rachmaninoff Greatest Hits" (with Leopold Stokowski and Anna Moffo). Instant classics!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best classical album for kids!
This is a wonderful album. Very high quality, and every selection is beautiful. My daughter (who usually asks me to turn my classical music off) loves to pretend to gallop like a horse during "Rodeo" and march like a soldier during "Parade of the wooden soldiers". This is a pleasure for the whole family! ... Read more
